PARK REOPENS BUT IT IS ONLY THE START The £3.5 million refurbishment of Hermitage Park is nearing the end of the building and landscaping phase with the playpark and the majority of the park due to be open this month. However the Friends of Hermitage Park are anxious that visitors don’t expect to see everything done (writes Nick Cowie). They say: “The long cold and wet winter was not conducive to planting up shrubs and flower beds, and they ran the risk of damage due to all the landscaping works. The recent hot weather has also not been good planting weather, so please do not expect a park filled with beautiful flower beds.

to be completely removed before planting up the beds, shrubs are being pruned and moved and new trees will be planted from October onwards. Friends add: “The Park is already transformed but there is still a great deal of work to be done over the next two to three years.”

“It is akin to when the builders have only just left and it is now time for the decoration, in the park’s case this means gardening.”

Visitors will find new paths with lighting, the restored memorial and reflecting pond, restored mill, interpretation features, new benches and bins, play equipment and new views opened up. What visitors will not find is a completed park as there is still a great deal of work and soft landscaping to be done.

The Heritage Lottery Fund programme runs until 2021 and over the next three years the project will be concentrating on developing the planting of the park. The flower beds are being double dug, invasive weeds need

RHC FURNITURE RESTORATION

A group of young people from Helensburgh had the once in a lifetime experience of meeting and chatting with music legend Nile Rodgers recently. Nile, the driving force behind the US band Chic, recently curated the Fiesta X Fold musical festival in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park. A private backstage session was arranged by the Chic Organisation following a request made by Stuart Duncan, Trustee, on behalf of the charity Helensburgh Heroes. Stuart told the CA: “I approached Nile through his management team and they were so

supportive. We were all hoping that he might be able to come to Helensburgh to visit the Centre but his schedule presented impossible logistical challenges. “However we were instead invited to be his personal guests for the day to host a Big Chair type session backstage at the festival.” Whilst the crowds out front were enjoying the music, the Helensburgh group were sitting

backstage chatting with Nile about his philosophy, his ideas and his personal journey. Nile spent nearly an hour with the group answering questions. The young people said: “He was very relaxed, charming and extremely frank when talking about his own personal journey. Nile covered everything from his choice of guitar, his songwriting techniques, to the artists that he has either produced or recorded with.” Added Stuart, “The Heroes charity was founded in the belief that everyone is special, has the power to do great things but that sometimes you just need a catalyst. For that catalyst substitute 'inspirational role model' like Nile.” The Heroes Centre is currently developing a wide-ranging events programme at the Sinclair Street venue that caters for the whole community including their Tales from the Big Chair programme. This involves an inspirational guest speaker discussing their life and experiences in an Actors Studio format and closes with a short Q&A session. Visit www. helensburghheroes.com.

CRAIG AND CREW JUST LOVED ARGYLL CLYDESIDE DOMESTICS postcard! In particular I would like to thank Argyll and Bute Council, Creative Scotland Screen Commission and all the people in Argyll who welcomed us along the way. “As a New Yorker, I will be going home without a question in my head that I will be returning to Scotland and Argyll.”

Craig and Kathie had a great time in Argyll

Top US chat show host and actor Craig Ferguson made a lot of local friends recently when he was on location in Argyll. Scots-born Craig who recently had a surprise cameo role in Still Game, is starring in Love You To Death with Kathie Lee Gifford filmed in various locations across Argyll including Arrochar. In Love You To Death, Gifford’s character Annabelle is a lonely widow who goes on her travels with her husband’s ashes to visit places the couple saw and loved in films. While visiting Loch Fyne, she meets Scotsman Craig

Ferguson and her plans change dramatically. Matthew Weiner the producer of the Hollywood film said he fell head over heels in love with the area and praised the warmth of local people. Mr Weiner said: “Our experience of filming in Argyll and Scotland as a whole has been phenomenal, we have never felt so welcomed and supported as Americans. Every view is a

Argyll and Bute Film Office and Roads team, in partnership with Creative Scotland, helped facilitate the production, which chose Argyll and Bute for its spectacular scenery. Councillor Aileen Morton, Council Leader and Policy Lead for Economic Development, added: “I’m thrilled to hear how much the cast and crew of Love You To Death have enjoyed being in Argyll and Bute. And as much as it’s great fun to have these productions taking place on our doorstep, there are also real economic benefits attached. “We will continue to welcome productions such as this and encourage anyone who is looking for a beautiful and welcoming film location to choose Argyll and Bute.”

Some of the Cove students who will be exhibiting their work

A summer highlight this month is Helensburgh Art Club presenting their renowned Annual Exhibition. This year they have linked up with Cove Park. Both professional and amateur members of the Club exhibit and the range of styles from contemporary to traditional, along with the variety of media used regularly surprises visitors. As the Art Club is very much a part of Helensburgh community it has become a tradition to invite another group within our area to exhibit some of their art work on the main stage of the Victoria Halls during the annual exhibition.

Glen Graves Press Officer tells us: “This year Cove Park has been invited to exhibit some of the exciting and contemporary work undertaken by their students. “As part of a workshop they were asked to look at how letters and characters are formed and encouraged to think

Glen adds: “The members of Helensburgh Art Club put a huge effort in bringing their Annual Exhibition to Victoria Halls each year, but it is always worth it to welcome old friends that come along every year, new faces that enquire about joining the club with its lectures and workshops and many visitors to the town who often buy art works to take home with them. Some items have even gone as far as New York ,Canada and Australia.” Diary date: Victoria Halls, open to the public from Saturday 4th August until Saturday 11th August.

HONOUR FOR LEGENDARY MCGRUER YACHT

JOINERY & GLAZING

Acclaimed model maker David Spy is making a bronze-cast half-model of the classic Gareloch yacht which could be the latest exhibit in Helensburgh’s outdoor museum. David, from Rhu, was a leading light in the restoration of the legendary 1920s yachts which are a regular sight on the loch nearly a century after they were built. The Gareloch One Design Class was a collection of just 16 classically profiled 24-foot yachts, designed and built by McGruers. Now living in Tayinloan, David said: “I rebuilt around ten of the Garelochs in the eighties but I haven’t worked on real boats for around twenty years as I always have difficulty coping with the demand for my model work. “However I am happy to take this one on as I feel the class has been pretty much overlooked for most of its 90+ years, and anything that might encourage taking care of and indeed treasuring this fleet of boats must be a good thing.”

David is currently working on models for Sydney, Turkey, San Francisco, Gloucester Mass and some in England. He joked: “Now I have Tim Henderson chewing my ear about a Gareloch model which is all of 12 inches long!”

Tim as we reported at the time, restored that last Gareloch, Dione, with his cousin Bill McLaren. David added: “He is involved in this too. It won’t be the carving which is the problem, more the preparation to form a mould for bronze casting, which is where Tim comes in.” The Colquhoun Square space already features award-winning installations which document aspects of local life and history. Argyll and Bute Council has set aside £55,000 to expand the project. The authority’s Helensburgh and Lomond area committee will award £600 to

CLUB SAYS IT WITH FLOWERS It was August 1893 when Helensburgh Golf Club was founded and now 125 years on, the club has commemorated the anniversary with a special floral display. The 125 motif was cut out by members, Derek Spaull and Alan Latham then Ladies Captain Bobbie Latham along with Sheena Bird, who looks after all the flowers around the clubhouse, planted the flowers and arranged the white stones in Spring. They are now in full bloom. 125 years ago the Helensburgh course was just a nine hole layout. It was approved by Old Tom Morris for a fee of £1 plus expenses for the day. The founding committee included Andrew Bonar Law, who became Prime Minister in 1922 and a local dignitary, Alexander Breingan,

who was the first captain. The Breingan Medal, presented in 1894, is the club’s oldest trophy. By 1905, the course had been extended to 18 holes, largely due to the guidance of the club professional, Tom Turnbull, who served the club for 50 years. From the beginning, Helensburgh has been a family club, with a predominantly town membership and the members are drawn from all walks of life. The present clubhouse was opened in October 1909, by the Duke of Argyll and plans are now being progressed for a new clubhouse as part of the proposed major redevelopment of the club.

Fitforlife on West Clyde Street in Helensburgh has scooped the top award of Fitness Studio of the Year UK from the Luxury Travel Guide. Owner Angie Macfarlane said “This is a wonderful accolade, not just for us but for the whole town. I am so proud of the Team for pulling this off. It’s absolutely down to all their hard work and dedication. It’s fantastic recognition of a small business quietly achieving big things.” A spokesperson at The Luxury Travel Guide added; "Only the most deserving firms and individuals walk away with one of these prestigious accolades and gain a place in our awards winners’ guide, distributed to over 500,000 professional people worldwide".

Jordan Clark of Stall Hire Scotland, Helensburgh's monthly market operator, has stepped forward to: “take the Summer Festival to new heights. It’ll take place over two days, August 11 and 12. A two day road closure, in line with Winter Festival, has been organised and a full programme of market stalls, sideshows, street food and family entertainment is planned. A spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce said: “There was a real danger this year that Summer Festival would not happen at all due to lack of funds and a shortage of volunteers willing to take it on. “We are very grateful to Jordan Clark from Stall Hire Scotland

for stepping into the breach and providing the necessary financial and practical support we needed to make it happen. Jordan said: “I was delighted to be able to help. I believe very much in Helensburgh as an attractive, vibrant town and am very pleased to be able to add to this through the Summer Festival. The Festival coincides with the Helensburgh Farmers Market which this time will feature stalls ranging from crafts and gifts to amazing artisan foods and local produce. ★ SANDSTONE REPAIR AND RESTORATION This popular event not only exhibits plants, flowers and vegetables, but also handicrafts and baking

Helensburgh has one of the oldest horticultural societies in Scotland and its annual show attracts hundreds of gardeners from novice to expert. Their 168th flower and vegetable show is on Saturday 25th August this year at the Victoria Halls, and will be open to the public at 14.00.

During the winter the society holds monthly meetings with guest speakers giving talks on a wide variety of horticultural topics.

The Society was formed around 1850 for the local gardeners from the large gardens in Helensburgh to show their wares to the general public, and has been holding shows every year with only short breaks during the two world wars.

This popular event not only exhibits plants, flowers and vegetables, but also handicrafts and baking. Visit www. helensburghhorti.com.

The society promotes horticultural interests in the local area and encourages young children by holding bulb competitions between all the local primary schools.

PROJECT WILL GATHER FOLKLORE A workshop is being held this month to assist people across Argyll and Bute to take part in a unique project to preserve tales and fables about the area for future generations. Serpents and mermaids feature in Argyll folklore

Argyll and Bute Youth Services has called on people of all ages to help gather stories, film clips, photographs and objects to celebrate the uniqueness of the area. The Digital Storytelling Project is part of the national Year of Young People and aims to bring together our younger and older generations to share their stories and folklore tales of yesteryear. The council’s policy lead for education Yvonne McNeilly said: “Argyll is teeming with folklore tales, from giant serpents and

mermaids being spotted on our coastlines in years gone by, to stories of haunted caves and bloody battles – we’ve got a lot to talk about.” A workshop will be later this month where, having gathered everything they need, people will be able to create a platform for uploading the content. If you would like to take part, or help gather content for the project, contact Roanna Clark, Youth Participation Officer, on 01546 604752 or email roanna.clark@argyll-bute.gov.uk.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: A DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH...? We all know that alcohol has health risks, but I was recently interested to read that every time we drink alcohol, it causes gut and liver damage and increases body fat! When we take a drink, the alcohol first causes damage to the gut lining, allowing toxins to more easily enter the bloodstream. It first gets broken down into acetaldehyde, a chemical toxin that causes nausea and replaces healthy liver with scar tissue. Acetate is then formed, and each time it’s created, small parts of the liver degenerate and die. The body then

converts acetate to fatty acids which leave fat deposits on the liver, preventing it from working efficiently. So, every time we drink we increase our liver’s scar tissue, inflammation, fat deposits, cell death, as well as increasing the toxins in our blood. And we wonder why we don’t perform so well the morning after? On the other hand, the less alcohol we drink the better our sleep, mood, weight and energy levels, as well as clearer skin condition. Perhaps the next time you “drink to your health”, it might be a non-alcoholic one?

DANCE YOURSELF TO

FITNESS

From hip-hop to the foxtrot, dance fever is sweeping the nation, fuelled by popular TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Britain's Got Talent. Whether you like to jump or jive, tap or tango, shake your hips or your booty, dancing is one of the most enjoyable ways to get moving.

BALLET

The first ballet school, the Académie Royale de Danse, was established in France in 1661. Today there are three main forms of ballet: classical, neoclassical and contemporary. Ballet's conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement are a great foundation for dance in general.

HIGHLAND

Highland dancing is a style of competitive solo dancing developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries in the context of competitions at public events such as the Highland games. It is often performed to the accompaniment of bagpipes.

MODERN JIVE

Modern jive has evolved from jive and swing into one of the simplest of all partner dances. There's no footwork to learn so within half an hour your local club will have you turning and spinning to the biggest chart hits of today and yesterday, with lots of different partners.

Regular dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination, and beating stress. One of the best things about dancing is that while you're having fun moving to music and meeting new people, you're getting all the health benefits of a good workout.

STREET

Street dance describes urban dance styles that evolved in the street, school yards and nightclubs, including hip hop, popping, locking, krumping and breaking. These dances are practised competitively, as well as being an art form and a great workout.

Here we have listed a few of the more popular dance styles...

BALLROOM

CONTEMPORARY

Ballroom dancing has made a comeback in recent years. There are many styles of ballroom dancing from around the world, such as the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and each has specific step patterns. It is essential for both partners to know the steps so they can dance together.

Unlike dances such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific techniques. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances that are often deeply personal.

LINE DANCING

MODERN JAZZ

Line dances are choreographed dances performed in unison by a group of people in rows. Anybody can do it and the steps are easy to learn. Beginners can enjoy dancing to a whole range of routines to all genres of music. You don't need a partner so it's great for meeting people.

SALSA

Salsa dancing is a fun and flirtatious form of partner dancing, fusing steamy Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles into simple and lively movements. The basic steps are easy to learn, and you'll salsa your way across the dance floor before you know it.

TAP

Tap dance uses shoes with small metal plates on the soles to make the dance itself part of the music. Tap evolved in America and had its roots in African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals.

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Jazz dance was popularised in the US by the big bands of the swing era. It offers a full body workout, developing dance ability, flexibility, strength and rhythm.

SCOTTISH

Scottish Country is a social dance involving groups of couples dacing to set routines. These dances are set to musical forms (Jigs, Reels and Strathspey Reels) which come from the Gaelic tradition of Highland Scotland, as do the steps used in performing the dances.

ZUMBA

Zumba is a popular fitness programme inspired by Latin dance. The word "Zumba" comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that's great fun and easy to learn.

However, it does suggest that the temperature should be a minimum of 16ºC or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work. Unfortunately, there is no guidance for a maximum temperature limit provided for. There is a requirement that employers must adhere to health and safety at work law that includes; keeping the temperature at a comfortable level and providing clean and fresh air. In the event you feel your workplace is too hot to work comfortably then you should raise this directly with your employer initially who should take appropriate and reasonable steps to address this with you and any other employees affected.

Gin enthusiasts will get the chance to enjoy Scottish products at GinFall Festival

GIN SLINGS AND OTHER THINGS AT FEST What’s been described as the perfect day out for gin lovers comes to town this month giving a chance to sample the products of what is a rapidly growing Scottish industry. Social and Cocktail Events have organised the GinFall Festival bringing a mix of Gin, Cocktails, Food and Music to Victoria Hall on Saturday 18th August 2018. The Festival will bring together a large variety of gins from Scotland and further afield. All the gin distilleries including Caorunn, Arbikie, Makar, Colonsay, Pinkster, Silent Pool, Gin Mare, Lussa, Granite North, Dundee Gin, Stirling Gin, to name but a few will be offering samples for attendees to enjoy on the day, plus there will also be Scottish Gin masterclasses, music and a premium cocktail bar.

GinFall organiser John McIver tells the CA, “Having researched the current 'gin festival' landscape in Scotland, which has grown significantly over the last 12 months, we saw an opportunity to create a more boutique style gin show, with a blend of quality gins, local food and music, gin masterclasses and premium gin cocktails, created by our own Social and Cocktail mixologists. “We decided to move away from the typical city centre locations of Glasgow, Edinburgh as we understand that it is not always ideal for

people to have to make their way into the city centre for a show at the weekend. We feel there is a massive appetite for an event of this nature in Helensburgh, and we believe that Victoria Hall provides an ideal location for a first-class Gin Festival.” The Festival will be in two sessions: Session 1: 12:00 -16:00 Session 2: 17:00 -21:00, Tickets: General Admission £15 (+£1 booking fee) from www. socialandcocktail.co.uk/ginfall or on Facebook @ginfallfestival.

KAYAKING CENTRE FOR CRAIGENDORAN? Helensburgh’s derelict Craigendoran pier could become a kayaking centre and five-star bed and breakfast if a planning application is successful.

Full Bathroom & Kitchen Installation Landlord Safety Certificates Boiler Servicing & Installation Full System Installation All Oil/LPG Work Undertaken incl. Boats & Caravans Fully Insured

The site was sold at auction in 2016 and now a planning application has been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council by Josephine Forrester. In support Corstorphine and Wright architects say the project would rejuvenate ‘an anti-social, dead-end space’ and ‘take back some of its historical significance.’

Can you sell space?

In the 1880s, Craigendoran pier was a key part of the train and steamer links which saw the area develop rapidly. The developers say that around two-thirds of the former pier footprint has some part of the structure still in place.

We are looking for a positive and outgoing media tele sales professional to join our team and sell advertising in our four glossy monthly magazines.

Naming the project ‘Go Coastal!’, the developers say most of the pier timber elements past low tide will be retained in the current condition, but some around the low tide line would be cut down to ground level. The Lochside News website reports that in a supporting statement, they said: “A kayaking facility could be well accommodated within the available space with possibility for future expansion. “Proposals fit wholly within the categories of recreation and tourism. The proposed pier B&B/Go Coastal (Kayaking excursions) offer

£30,000 OTE

stuart@communityadvertiser.co.uk

Development would see the restoration of the area to improve conditions for local wildlife and allow fantastic opportunity for a new tourism offering to experience an exceptionally high quality bed and breakfast with kayaking experiences of the beautiful west coast.”

Full details of the plans are on the council website – the reference number is 17/03284/PP.

TOWN’S U3A INAUGURATED

GIANT ROWS BATHTUB UP LOCH came to his rescue stating he could make it reality, he would buy a bathtub and row it up Loch Lomond!

Now one of the best organisations to help you have a productive retirement is now up and running in Helensburgh. Membership of the self-help group costs £20 a year, plus fees for groups which members join. It is expected that there will be a range of options. Malcolm Brown, chair of Helensburgh and District U3A, said groups would meet in the parish church halls in Helensburgh, which was the venue for a launch meeting in July. There are already 50 U3As in Scotland with over 10,000 members; each U3A is locally managed but federated to the Third Age Trust. For more information, visit www.u3a.org.uk, www. u3asites.org.uk/Scotland/home or email malcolm500brown@ btinternet.com.

Malcom Burns is raising money for Alzheimer's Scotland by rowing a bathtub the full length of Loch Lomond

Malcolm Burns, a 39 year old, 6’3” local lad who currently lives in New Mexico, America, is on a mission to raise money for Alzheimer’s Scotland in a novel way, writes Liz Grant. Malcolm plans to row up the 22.6 miles length of Loch Lomond on his own in a bathtub which he’s made seaworthy with the help of close friends and family. He sets sail at 4am on Saturday the 11th of August from Balloch. It’s an estimated 15-18 hours journey. What possessed him to do this? Last year he visited his wife, Ruth’s grandfather. Papa Robin

Hickey was in the later stages of dementia. Robin happily told a story of two young men he had heard about that had rowed the length of Loch Ness in a bathtub. Sadly Robin began to doubt the truth in his memory of what was surely too far-fetched a story. Malcolm

One year on and Malcolm is ready to make his epic journey, squeezing his statuesque frame into his bath with lobster floats as outriggers, in honour of the man he thought of as his own grandfather. He has already created a prototype ‘boattub’ in the US and he’ll make a Scottish ‘boattub update’ when he returns home in July. We love that Malcolm is doing this. So many of us have been touched by the dark side of dementia. Isn’t it wonderful to know that there are heroes out there doing something silly with such beautiful thought behind it? Malcolm would like to raise £2,000. You can help him smash that target via his fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/papas-bathtub-row

YOUNGSTERS FEATURED IN PIPING FESTIVAL Another very successful Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships was held at East King Street Park in brilliant sunshine, with over 250 pipers and drummers competing.

Pictured are Linda, Margaret, Maria and Wilma with Gary Mulvaney from Helensburgh Toyota and Poet Gracey Flair

SUITS YOU AYGO A massive well done to members of The Helensburgh and Lomond Knitting Bee group who have been hard at work creating a cover for the new AYGO. The group was formed by Argyll & Bute TSI and Alzheimer Scotland and is open to everyone in the community. Local performance poet Gracey Flair created her own wee ditty to mark the occasion entitled “Aygo’s Here and Aye Goes There” Gary Mulvaney from Helensburgh Toyota said: “We were delighted to support this fantastic group and make a donation to help with more supplies and social work events.” TSI tell us: “If you would like to learn to knit, share your skills with

others or simply knit for fun? The Knitting Bee is for everyone in the community. Come along for knitting, coffee and a chat. “The group can provide wool, needles and patterns or you can bring your own. Argyll and Bute TSI and Alzheimer are joining forces and will be holding these fun sessions every Friday at 1.30pm in the Dementia Resource Centre, 23-25 West Princes Street, Helensburgh. For further information please call Liz Hamilton 07733306954 or Alison Gildea on 01436 671613”.

This year the emphasis was on the juveniles and in particular the school pipe bands including two school pipe bands from North Lanarkshire Schools, plus Tobermory High School Pipe Band competing for the second time at the BPC and Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band for the first time. Other school bands who regularly compete at the BPC are Kintyre Schools and Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band so Argyll & Bute are always well represented. Chieftain Eric Thomson presented the trophies to the winners who were - North Lanarkshire Schools, 1st Juvenile grade; Lower Clyde Pipes and Drums, 1st Grade 4B; Kilbarchan, 1st Grade 4A; Kilbarchan, 1st Grade 3; Tobermory High School were 3rd in the Novice B Grade. Next year the BPC committee hope to hold the West of Scotland Pipe Band

Younger pipers were the festival stars

Championships which will include Grade 1 pipe bands competing. The BPC highland dancing competition was held in the Commodore Hotel on Sunday 17.6.18 and the winners were - Eilildh Gammons 11 years premier winner and overall premier winner; Grace Harlton 16 years premier winner and Abby McSorley adult premier winner.'
