Cardross Baby and Toddler group is looking to recruit more volunteers to help keep the group running.
Helensburgh’s Cancer Research Charity shop is on course to be the UK’s top fundraiser for the second year in a row. Assistant manager Alison Sturgeon tells us that despite terrible weather they managed a great final weekend and the new running total is almost £13,600 which with more to come almost certainly makes them the top shop in the UK.

BABY AND TODDLER GROUP NEEDS HELPERS
The shop recently had support from the pupils of Lomond School and Lorna Gittoes of The Creation Station for a spooktacular cake sale at Halloween. Before that The Grannies Challenge bike ride event made a major contribution and the children who took part visited the shop to present their cheque.
Other events included the first ever SU2C Festival and a Take That tribute night and “Freaking Weekend at The Logie. The team say: “We also have a variety of bake sales, can collections and bag packs organised. We are a tiny team of two staff and a handful of volunteers but we are passionate about our fundraising and we live to put our shop and our town, firmly in the spotlight. Stand Up To Cancer raises money for Translational Research, which turns clinical trials into treatments for cancer patients.
The group has been running for a long time and is a friendly social gathering for parents and carers. We meet in Cardross Parish Church Hall at Station Rd, Cardross G82 5NL every Wednesday from 10-11.30am. Aimed at 0-5 year olds. Everyone is welcome for arts, crafts, free play, snack and a sit down and coffee for all. ÂŁ2 per week. Free to volunteers. Facebook page 'Cardross Baby and Toddlers Group'. Christmas party Wed 20th December. Please drop in to the group prior to notify them of your interest or message on Facebook.

SUbmARine CentRe neARS opening Volunteers have been burning the midnight oil as the final stages of the long awaited Scottish Submarine Centre in Helensburgh are worked on.
The centrepiece of the museum is a X-51 class miniature submarine. The vessel, donated by The Royal Navy Museum, is in situ at the centre which is located in a new building on West King Street next to The Tower. The X-51 will be the focal point of the museum and exhibits will also include an interactive memorial in remembrance of the submariners who have given their lives in the Royal Navy Submarine Service.
Progress is being reported regularly on the centre’s Facebook page, and throughout December previews are being held for stakeholders and volunteers. The centre is expected to be open to the public at the end of the month.
A grant of £670,000 through the Armed Forces Covenant Fund aided progress on the centre which when finished will shine a light on the history of submarines and in particular their roles in the first and second World Wars.
The museum has had the help of students from the two local high schools to develop databases of submariners who died while in service. The database is now over 5,300 records and volunteers are expanding the data fields and looking for as much information about these brave men as possible. If you are related to a submariner (lost in service) and have any information which would
help develop their profile please contact via info@ scottishsubmarine.com.

TV and ďŹ lm star Bill Paterson has joined forces with Celtic Music legends Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain in a new short ďŹ lm about the UK’s last paddle Steamship, Maid of the Loch. They’re offering the public a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunityâ€? to save the ship and see her sail again on Loch Lomond. The film was released for the launch of a crowdfunding campaign with a target to raise ÂŁ125,000 in just six weeks, to buy and install the special steam boiler that will power the engine and thus restore the “Heartâ€? of the Maid of the Loch. In the new fi lm, Bill Paterson brings his wonderful flair for story-telling, to the tale of Maid of the Loch. As Bill takes viewers on a tour of the ship, Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain – known as Phil & Aly to fans of their Scottish Traditional Music around the world - play a specially composed song about the Maid on the deck, with views of Loch Lomond behind them.

Remarkable archive footage and photography runs throughout the fi lm, showing the Maid in her heyday, packed with passengers enjoying a day on Loch Lomond. Bill said:
“The Maid has a genuine, oncein-a-lifetime opportunity right now to sail again, thanks to a generous pledge from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“It is a very real possibility. However, Heritage Lottery Fund’s commitment of ÂŁ3.8 million funding, is only a pledge which will be awarded if Maid of the Loch’s charity, Loch Lomond Steamship Company, can raise ÂŁ1 million. And that’s where this campaign comes in and why Phil, Aly and I made this film.â€? Phil Cunningham says the story of the ship inspired them to write a song about it too: “The Maid is known, quite wonderfully, as the ship that was built twice. ALY bACK mAid AppeAL vessel. First built in Glasgow at A&J Inglis shipyards, the Maid was then taken apart, put on a train to her new home in Balloch and put back together again before her launch in March 1953.” 1953. Since 1996 the volunteers of the charity the Loch Lomond Steamship Company have been lovingly maintaining the ship and working towards their ambitious mission to fully restore the ship to her former glory and get her sailing again. John Beveridge is one of the founders of the Loch Lomond Steamship Company. He fell in love with the ship as a boy, going sailing on Loch Lomond and has spent more than 20 years volunteering his time and skills to look after the Maid and raise funds to see her sail again.
He said: “We need to raise this £125,000 now, so we can get the order in for the special steam boiler by the end of January, and receive the boiler in time to do the work to install it over the summer of 2018. We are in a bit of a catch 22 situation just now, so the timing of this appeal is crucial to the success of our overall effort to raise the funds to fully refurbish the Maid.” The film can be seen and donations to the appeal can be made at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ maid-to-sail until December 8 or donate anytime through www.maidoftheloch.org

DECEMBER 2017 - Local News
hAVe YoURSeLf A fiRe SAfe XmAS Fairy Lights and other decorative lights need more care than your everyday lights and should be switched off when you go out or go to sleep. The Christmas tree too could catch and fill a room with fire and deadly gases.
43% of people are more concerned with how their tree looks rather than how safe it is
Scotland’s Fire and Rescue Service is determined that Christmas should not end in tragedy. There are extra hazards present at this time of year, but say their safety experts, a bit of common sense will prevent your celebrations being ruined. Candles mark special occasions and create a special atmosphere but they also bring fire home. So treat them very carefully.
• Always put candles on a heat resistant surface • Be especially careful with tea lights; put them in a proper holder • Position away from curtains or furniture • Keep out of reach of children and pets • Do not move them when burning • Extinguish candles when you leave a room and never go to sleep with a candle burning.
It is important to ensure needles on fresh trees are green and not dried out , don’t place the tree too close to a heat source, don’t put your live tree up too early or leave longer than two weeks and keep the stand filled with water at all times. Other top tips are: Check your smoke alarm. Be careful when cooking, especially with chip pans and never cook if you have been drinking alcohol. Remember that wrapping paper and cards should be kept away from heat sources. Turn off decorative lights including tree lights and candles and stub out cigarettes properly. A Service spokesman said: We do want you to celebrate safely . If the worst happens remember your fire escape plan, get out and stay out then dial 999 . If you want any free advice please just call us on 0800 0731 999 “

DECEMBER 2017 – What's Up Doc?
Wreath making
Friends of Linn Gardens in Cove are kicking off the festive season with an interactive afternoon of wreath making. It takes place on Sunday December 3 at the Gibson Hall Garelochhead from 2-5pm when Dr Jim Taggart and others will be offering help, instruction and information on the seasonal foliage in the garden. It costs £3 including the materials so it is a very inexpensive way of learning an ancient art, say organisers. The Friends of Linn Gardens are made up of a wide section of people bonded by their love of plants and who support Jim in his work to preserve what is regarded as one of Scotland’s hidden gems.
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: REWARDING BEST EFFORTS! Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Scottish Health Awards in Edinburgh. Alongside other doctors there were people involved in the NHS in many different ways, including physiotherapists, optometrists, nurses, speech therapists, managers, carers and volunteers. It was uplifting to hear the stories of how people had been recognised for the special attention and care which they had shown to patients. At a time when we are often hearing stories of failures within the NHS, it reminded us that the vast majority of healthcare professionals often give a little of themselves, which makes their work more than

just a job, and makes people feel like a real individual and not just another patient. A few days later the new Scottish GP contract, previously unchanged since 2004, was unveiled. This puts patients at the centre, but will see GPs’ role changing to “Expert Generalists”, possibly having a more handsoff role but using their knowledge and expertise to supervise and support other professionals such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and nurses to ensure people get the most appropriate care from the person best placed to give it. Hopefully as things progress, we will see even more clinicians nominated by grateful patients and colleagues!

A new anti-smoking campaign aims to challenge adults who buy or give cigarettes to young people. Research has found that young people who smoke usually get their tobacco from friends and family. Evidence also reveals these these adults think they are “doing them a favour”. In response, the #notafavour campaign will make it clear that those helping under-18s to get cigarettes are also helping them into addiction, ill-health and financial problems. The campaign, which has been developed by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland and the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland.
The Crown Office of Procurator Fiscal Services (COPFS) is the body responsible for the prosecution of all crimes in Scotland. They also investigate sudden or suspicious deaths and handle complaints made against the police. Procurator Fiscals are qualified solicitors who work for COPFS and are therefore civil servants. They receive reports about crimes from the police and then consider what action is to be taken. It is their job to decide if a crime has been committed and, if so, whether there is enough evidence for prosecution. Prosecution should be in the
public interest. This means they must asses the interests of the victim, accused and the general wider community before progressing the matter to court. The Fiscal then prepares the case for court prosecution by collating the evidence gathered by police and other bodies and summoning witnesses. They then present the case themselves to the court for Justice of the Peace and Sheriff Courts matters. If the case is being heard in the High Court then they are preparing the case on behalf of an Advocate acting as Crown Counsel. Like defence lawyers, they play an integral role in the justice system, which could not operate without them.

There will be artisan food and drink at the St Andrew’s Celebration Market from 10am to 4pm, and also a great selection of arts and crafts “with a very Scottish feel”. bin LineR SYStem bReAK thRoUgh The days of post-it notes and pieces of paper with messages stuck to food bins by Sellotape will soon be over in Helensburgh and Lomond. Argyll and Bute Council says it is introducing ‘a simple new system’ for residents to order new liners for their food waste bins – tying an unused bag to the food caddy. The bins are emptied weekly but currently replacement rolls of liners are only delivered to homes every six months, although they can also be ordered by contacting the council, or picked up from the council offices in Helensburgh.
and saves the council time and resources as the new supplies are dropped off when we already have staff and a vehicle in the area, as we are already collecting the food waste.
From the end of this month, people will be asked to tie an unused liner to the handle of their bin as a sign to council workers that they need more liners. A new supply will then be left inside the bin. Policy lead for roads and amenity services Roddy McCuish, said: “This is a very simple system that means residents get their replacement bin liners quickly,

Winter chills affect pets too The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is again concerned that puppies and kittens given at Christmas can end up abandoned. The message as ever is think before giving pets as presents. They live around 15 years and require serious commitment. The various Animal Welfare charities also remind people with pets that there are some simple common
sense rules to remember in the winter months. Dog owners must keep their pets well away from ponds and lakes that are iced over. Thin ice may break under a dog's weight. Also watch out for dogs' paws becoming impacted with snow - this can cause them discomfort. Don't forget to look after the wildlife in your garden. In winter, birds may have diffi culty finding normal food supplies such as berries, insects, seeds, worms and fruit. An extra titbit from your kitchen will help to keep them going. Keep a close eye on outdoor pets, such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Put extra bedding in their home and be prepared to move them into a shed or garage for extra shelter whilst the weather is cold.

tRAd gLoRY bid foR RYAn Cardross fiddler Ryan Young will find out this month if he has won the crown for Trad Music Album of the Year – in what would be a major triumph for the talented young musician. Last year we reported how Ryan had followed notable academic success by producing his own album, and now that album - titled as his name – is in the frame for the top award in the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. However even if one of the other seriously good musicians in the final pips him to the post he has definitely moved to the centre of the traditional music radar by getting into such an elite league of award candidates in the first place. Having graduated only last year he is already firmly in the “one to watch” category of one of Scotland’s most vibrant music genres – one which, with major events like Celtic Connections – is becoming more popular by the year. Judged by a panel of industry experts, the standout category is

arguably one of the most sought after awards and competition is said to be particularly tough this year. The winners will shortly be crowned at a glittering ceremony held at The Lagoon Centre in Paisley. This year’s ceremony will see some of the biggest names in Scottish traditional music perform, including Elephant Sessions, The Shee Big Band and Siobhan Miller – who is regarded as one of the finest singers to emerge from Scotland’s music scene over the last decade – and many more. Event founder and promoter, Simon Thoumire, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to bring the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards to Paisley. There is a real
buzz around the town as they strive towards their bid for UK City of Culture 2021, and we’re delighted to be part of it.”

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
