CHRISTMAS DAY HEROES While most of us tuck into festive food and drink, swap gifts with loved ones and try to avoid Brussel sprouts, others will be working.
Step forward our Christmas Day heroes, for whom the big day is just business as usual. RNLI Crew Based at Helensburgh Lifeboat Station, Coxswain Robin Lane is the most senior crew member of the local Atlantic 85 class lifeboat. He has been part of the team for 28 years. Robin, 49, has been on call on many Christmas Days, so his wife Liz and their six sons know what to expect. He says: “They’re used to the pager going off and often at the most inopportune moments. “We’ve only been called out once Mobile Hairstylist

on Christmas Day, in 1977, but we’re always ready to attend. The week after Christmas to New Year’s Day is often a bit busier. Missing out on a Christmas dinner pales into insignificance against saving someone’s life.” District Nurse As part of the Helensburgh and Lomond District Nursing Team, covering from Cardross to Arrochar and Ardlui, Alison Dunion is no stranger to a Christmas shift. She has been nursing for 35 years, 12 of those in the community, and she’s worked several in the past.

Growing by Reputation & Recommendation
A new multi-discipline sporting challenge has been announced for a local loch – and ties in with the Year of Coasts and Waters 2020. The Loch Long Adventure Challenge invites 60 teams of two to compete in an event that includes a 3.5k kayaking section, followed by a 24k off-road cycle and a 5k run. Loch Long Events, which was set up by the charity the Loch Long Jetty Association, also organises the popular Arrochar 10k each September. Now they plan to add the Adventure Challenge on Saturday May 2, 2020, to their race programme. Next year has also been designated Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters with a programme of activity designed to inspire people to experience rivers, lochs and the sea.
Dawn Gourlay, secretary of the Loch Long Jetty Association, said: “As part of the bid to raise funds to install a new floating pontoon in Arrochar, which we have now done, we also pledged to organise a water-based event. I thought it would be good to have a triathlon type event, although instead of a swim section there will be a kayak on the loch. “I thought it would appeal to people who are keen to take part in events that are a bit quirky and where better to do a race than on Loch Long. It is such a beautiful location.”
The challenge base will be at Arrochar and competitors will paddle double sit-on kayaks, before heading on to local forest trails for the bike section and then the run. The first wave will start at 10.30am and the second at 12.30pm. There will be two age groups, juniors aged 17 to 19, and adults. There is an early bird entry fee of £106 per team of two (£100 if either or both of the team are members of Triathlon Scotland) until the end of January 2020. There will be a post-race ceilidh. See www.lochlongevents.com and enter at: www.entrycentral. com/Loch_Long_Adventure_ Challenge.

A group of writers is keen to welcome local residents to attend an evening of Christmasthemed entertainment this month. The event is hosted by the Mackintosh Group of Vale and Helensburgh Writers and comes at the end of a popular series of monthly gatherings in partnership with Helensburgh Library. Each month, “An Evening With…” showcased a different
author, who was invited to talk about their work. The monthly series included Pat McIntosh, who revealed the background of her Gil Cunningham medieval mystery series; Graham Morgan on his autobiography, Start’; and a poetry performance by Gracey Flair, among others.

“We hope that people will also attend the grand finale this month when the Mackintosh Writers will entertain with their own writings, including some with a Christmas theme. We expect it to be a very eclectic mix.” The grand finale will hear from writers Robin Lloyd-Jones, Catriona Malan and Gordon Burgess from Helensburgh; Evelyn Lawrie and Mary Irvine from Alexandria; and Ann MacKinnon, from Balloch. There is no charge for the event and everyone is welcome. There will be a half-time break for wine and homemade mince pies. A heritage initiative is keen to hear from local families who have an ancestor named on Helensburgh War Memorial. As part of Hermitage Park restoration, the Helensburgh War Memorial Families Project is seeking information about military men and woman who died in the Great War. Ann Stewart, a spokesperson for the project, says: “We are hoping to connect with living descendants so that we can compile a book and website to remember the lives of the people lost in the war between 1914 and 1918. The project is calling for people to search their homes for relevant items, photographs, documents, letters

NEW CHAT GROUP FOR MEN A men-only mental health talk group will launch this month at Drumfork Community Centre in Helensburgh. The first meeting of Males Tales will be on Monday November 4, from 6.30pm to 8pm, and will continue on the first and third Monday of each month. John Lewis, of Helensburgh, is the founder of the group. He says: “The aim is to provide a safe environment for men to talk to each other without any pressure or judgment. There will be no fee and no need to register your name.”
Tuesday 10th Helensburgh Flower Club
Victoria Halls, Helensburgh 2pm. Mrs Marilyn Bevan demonstrating and entertaining us at this meeting with her demonstration entitled ‘Another Christmas Do’. It's guaranteed to be fun and we look forward to catching up with members and visitors. helensburghflowerclub@gmail.com
The statistics on mental health in the UK are stark. It is estimated that more than one in three people are affected by a mental health problem each year. Tragically, suicide is also the biggest killer of men under the age of 45. John adds: “I feel that it’s important to have somewhere that men can come and feel safe to speak their mind to other men and not be judged. There are no set topics and it’s simply a place to chat openly about whatever it is they want to talk about. “In fact, if men want to come along and simply listen and say nothing then that is fine, too.” John wants to make it clear that Males Tales is not a therapy session. He says: “It is somewhere for everyone to relax, be themselves and hopefully, if they need it, give and receive support to each other, purely in the form of a friendly ear.”

December 2019 | What's Up Doc?
ARTHRITIS GROUP FOR ALL
with Dr Nick Dunn
A group that offers support for people of all ages living with arthritis is keen to encourage newcomers at regular get-togethers. Versus Arthritis (Helensburgh), which was formerly called Arthritis Care Helensburgh, meets at the Helensburgh Golf Club on the third Thursday of each month from 7pm to 9pm. The meet-ups provide a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment for people in a similar situation, allowing members to share their everyday experiences so they do not feel alone. The programme of events is varied and includes discussions about arthritis topics, entertainment nights, speakers, buffet evenings and coach outings. Arthritis affects some 10 million people, including children, in the UK. Some forms of arthritis are more common in older people.
What's Up Doc? This month:
The condition causes pain and inflammation in joints. The Helensburgh group is part of Scotland Versus Arthritis, which is based in Glasgow. The charity, Versus Arthritis, was formed in 2018 following a merger of Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research UK. It is now the UK's largest charity dedicated to supporting people with arthritis. If anyone is interested in attending the Helensburgh group, it is recommended they get in touch with the chairman Ron Wilson on 01436 675546 in the first instance. See www. arthritiscare.org.uk.
HAVE YOURSELF A VERY HEALTHY CHRISTMAS…?
This festive season many people will gain weight, tipping themselves over into obesity, joining the 26% of the UK population who are already obese. The tradition of excess food and drink, which specialises in high fat and sugar foods (think mince pies and chocolates!), at Christmas unfortunately has health costs. Obesity leads to heart disease, arthritis, depression, poor sleep and diabetes, to name but a few diseases, but fortunately it is something which can be avoided or changed without medication. “Lifestyle Medicine” is a growing movement which tries to address lifestyle related choices and illness by helping
people regain control and enjoy better health, to avoid illness and prescriptions. The general idea is that time spent by doctors or nurses, either one-to-one or in groups, used to enable and empower people to make healthier choices, can slowly change peoples’ ideas and may be a long term way to reduce the burden on the NHS. The Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance is an international group promoting this focussed approach. Recently the NHS Chief Executive said we need to “get serious about obesity or bankrupt the NHS” Maybe it’s time we changed our Christmas menus for some healthier options!

From start to finish Richard, Martin and team were fantastic. I remember on the first day of one of several meetings saying to Martin how refreshing their approach to the sale was and that was what sealed our business. They are honest and professional. The fit was completed in the three days as promised and the team were superb. Absolutely delighted with the outcome. There were minor teething problems but the speed at which my calls were dealt with and the team got things sorted was first class service. Would highly recommend.

PUPILS ENCOURAGED TO WALK TO SCHOOL In support of International Walk to School month, Taylor Wimpey donated high visibility snap bands to Primary One pupils at Colgrain Primary and Hermitage Primary in Helensburgh. The annual October initiative, organised by UK charity Living Streets, aims to encourage families to leave the car at home and walk to school safely. According to research by Living Streets, less than half of all school children are currently walking to school, a drop from 70% a generation ago. The research also found that children who exercise before school arrive refreshed and ready to learn and Linda Candlish, deputy headteacher at Colgrain Primary, agrees: “It’s really important to us that our pupils are happy and engaged when they arrive at school and walking is a great way for them to start the day. We want to encourage children and their parents to walk to school and the high visibility snap bands
donated by Taylor Wimpey will help our Primary Ones to do this more safely.” Mrs McMurdo, deputy headteacher at Hermitage Primary adds: “As well as promoting a healthy lifestyle to students, walking to school is also a huge help in reducing the volume of traffic outside school, thereby making the area safer for all. I would like to say a big thank you to Taylor Wimpey for this donation and for their help in raising awareness of Walk to School Month among our Primary one pupils and their parents.” Kirsty McGill, Head of Sales for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, says: “International Walk to School Month is a fantastic initiative and we are proud to have supported it again this year. We hope that our
donation of snap bands to Colgrain and Hermitage Primary Schools will help to encourage children to lead a healthy lifestyle, while staying safe on their walk to school.” Taylor Wimpey has donated over 65,000 snap bands to school children around the UK since 2014 as part of its commitment to giving back to the local communities in which it builds. ALL
We all know somebody who has everybody in their address book “sorted” for Christmas gifts by about September – selected, bought, wrapped and labelled. At the other extreme we all know plenty of people who run round the shops in a state of near panic with only days to go – which is why so many shops stay open later on Christmas Eve: they know there are desperate potential buyers out there without a clue of what to buy for Auntie Jean or cousin Jimmy. On the one hand most of us don’t want to bowl through a catalogue of names and simply tick them off mechanistically – to be truly successful a gift has to have some element of spontaneity and individuality about it – but on the other hand if you have several people to buy presents for you can only put off the critical decision for so long before that desperation factor clicks in.
One solution, for at least some gifts, is to buy entitlements which are useful but not dull. It could be an excursion in a hot air balloon, to be “cashed in” at any time over the next year, or it could be as simple as gift tokens for something really special… the sort of thing the person concerned wouldn’t normally treat themselves to. Don’t, however, buy someone membership of a gym – that could be taken entirely the wrong way, and would also give the recipient a sense of obligation – or a box set of “Teach Yourself Spanish” lessons… again, it carries more than a hint that the person concerned should be doing something “useful”, whereas the whole point of a present is

Christmas All Wrapped Up | December 2019
UP that it should be enjoyable and fun… a pleasant surprise, not an obligation. With youngsters the problem of getting exactly the “right” present can be even more daunting, because so much of young people’s attention span is wrapped up in electronics, whether phones or games. However if that special young person has some other existing interest – it could be cycling, say, or swimming – you may be able to find a gift that will lend that activity some value-added experience, and again you may find that if you buy vouchers you can leave it to the recipient to choose the item they most want or need.
Meanwhile, again with young people, if you are truly stumped you can always go for the old fall-back option of simply handing over some cash, but perhaps earmarked for something special – say a contribution towards a foreign holiday to a place they’ve always wanted to visit but never been able to afford. These “gifts in kind” can dramatically cut the number of difficult shopping choices you have to make, allowing you to focus on getting something uniquely suited to the handful of people who really need to be catered for in a very specific way… your husband, wife or partner isn’t going to appreciate something dull and utilitarian, and the gift has to say “I really tried”.

A film society has changed the date of this month’s screening because it now clashes with the country’s snap general election. Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society’s film, the BAFTA Scotland award-winning Wild Rose, will now be shown on Saturday December 14 instead of Thursday December 12. As well as a change of day, the times have also slightly altered and the doors will open at Cove Burgh Hall at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Winner of best feature film and best actress film for Jessie Buckley at the Scottish BAFTAs recently, Wild Rose also stars Julie Walters and has received critical acclaim.

Sir Boyd Tunnock with Royal Marines
JOIN DROP AND SWAP
TUNNOCK’S SEA BREAK
An environmental group is hosting a recycling and information event this month. Plastic Free Helensburgh is looking for volunteers and customers for the Drop and Swap at Helensburgh Parish Church on December 7 from 3pm to 5pm. Local people are encouraged to bring along pre-loved items, including clothes, shoes, jewellery, kitchenware, plants, unopened toiletries, books, DVDs, toys and games for swapping. There will also be an information session about PFH and a raffle with prizes from local businesses.
Caramel wafer king Sir Boyd Tunnock CBE went afloat at Faslane recently as a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant. Reaffirming the covenant on the hull of HMS Ambush, accompanied by Commodore Bob Anstey, Sir Boyd was happy to commit Tunnock’s Ltd in support of members of the Armed Forces, past and present. The nation’s favourite teacakes and caramel wafers have a special place aboard Scots-based submarines, as a regular for “Four-O’Clockers” – snack-time during a patrol where a teacake or caramel wafer is the treat of choice. Sir Boyd says: “I spent two years in the Army after getting called up for National Service. “Because of my background I ended up being posted to the
Catering Corps and cooked for 600 soldiers. “Tunnock’s has a long-standing relationship with the Armed Forces and the values and standards I learned in the Army are principles that I use to run the business to this day.” As well as touring the AstuteClass submarine, Sir Boyd also took a speedy ride with Royal Marines from 43 Commando. Sir Boyd is well known in the area supporting sailing. Both Helensburgh and Cove sailing communities have benefited from his generosity and his boat Lemarac – caramel in reverse – is a frequent participant in regattas.

A social enterprise set up to spread the benefits of art to more people is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. Helensburgh Art Hub was founded by Karlyn Marshall in April this year after seeing first-hand how art and creativity can be beneficial to a wide range of people. She was supported by startup funding from Firstport, which assists with the launch of innovative business ideas. Art is shown to help adults and children by reducing stress and anxiety, encouraging creative thinking, boosting self-esteem and providing a sense of accomplishment, among other advantages. Karlyn, a contemporary artist, now runs the not-for-profit venture at West Clyde Street, where she offers a wide range of classes and
workshops for people of all ages and needs. The Hub is now looking for extra help and volunteers. Karlyn said: “We are looking for volunteers who can help with children’s classes and also with curating our regular art exhibitions. “Perhaps there might be people with spare time who can also help with our social media and marketing, too. “The Hub is now so busy and we are keen to be able to offer more classes and workshops but I need help to do so.” As well as regular classes for kids, adults and people with additional support needs, Helensburgh
Art Hub is offering a number of workshops in December, including bottle lamp making, wreath making, needle felting, Christmas crackers and beeswax wraps. To find out more or to offer your voluntary help see helensburgharthub.com or email: hello@helensburgharthub.com.

A regular customer at The Coffee Club in Helensburgh has been inspired to write a poem about one of the cafĂŠ staff. Dora Wright, who is a member of several local writing groups, penned the verses about “a boy wae ginger herrâ€?. She is referring to Luke, who works at The Coffee Club on Colquhoun Square. Dora says: “I’m usually at the cafĂŠ once or twice a week and my friends and I are often served by Luke. “I wrote the poem as a wee joke to tease him but I think he is really chuffed by it.â€?

BOOKS BY TWO LOCAL AUTHORS Books make great Christmas presents, especially if they just happen to be by a talented local author – and here are brief details of a couple of newly-released works ideal as a special stocking filler. Sports journalist Robin ScottElliot has ventured into a magical world of adventure in early 18th century Russia with The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, a story which could have been inspired by some wonderful fairy tale by Pushkin. Set in what was then the recently-built St Petersburg, in the year 1725, the book’s
heroine, Katinka Dashkova, is a superb ballerina, but has to run for her Robin Scott-Elliot life – with friends Alexei the Giant and Nikolai the Dwarf – when Tzar Peter the Great expires, forcing them to flee the Winter Palace and the late ruler’s Circus of Curiosities. Described as a mystical tale with an enthralling blend of history and fiction the story follows the friends intrepid adventure through adversity in a land where witches, wolves and magic are never very far away. The Tzar’s Curious Runaways, can be purchased at Waterstons: www.waterstones.com/ book/the-tzars-curiousrunaways/robin-scottelliot/9781911427131
By sharp contrast there’s “adventure” of a very different kind in Dr Stephen Hearns’ Peak Performance under Pressure: lessons from a helicopter rescue doctor. Drawing on 20 years of leadership experience in high pressure emergency medical and rescue situations, the author describes the consequences of pressure, both positive and negative, and teaches the strategies we need to attain states of peak performance. Using first hand accounts of highpressure situations within emergency medicine, the book covers relevant aspects such as cognitive aids, teamwork, organisational culture and tactical leadership. It will appeal to doctors,
Commercial & Domestic Cleaners
ambulance clinicians, firefighters, military personnel, rescue teams and business Stephen Hearns leaders – and in fact anyone hoping to improve their own performance during high-pressure situations. If you’ve ever wondered just how the experts cope with the phenomenal challenges life throws their way you will find this a fascinating insight into the disciplines which help rescuers turn potential disaster into lifesaving success. Often we can be too busy thinking about other people's well being, but if we don't look after ourselves, our own health can suffer. “It doesn't have to be hard work – it can be a fun, rewarding and sociable thing to do and there's so much going on in this area that people can get involved in.
As well as the music, there will also be real ales and food available and all for £5 entry. All profits will go to the annual Galafest event.
