Local News | January 2019

2018 WAS A TALE OF TWO PROJECTS Looking back over the year two major projects dominated the local news. The restoration of Hermitage Park and the plans for a new leisure centre (writes Nick Cowie). The Park as we report in this edition has progressed at a great rate and a Spring party to show everything off is planned.

Artist impression of the Leisure Centre

Progress on the Leisure centre however is a different story. The year started with news that a public consultation on Helensburgh's new waterfront leisure centre was taking place after significant changes to the design of the building were approved by councillors. It was felt that detailed consultation on “matters of concern or debate“ with users and community groups was required. In November after a marathon meeting, the planning committee decided by six votes to four to

continue the application until a later date, undecided at time of writing. The decision to continue was made after new flood risk advice was published on Argyll and Bute Council's website warning that the flood defences for the building, as proposed in the application, would only be enough to protect the proposed new leisure centre from the threat of flooding until 2030 – just 10 years after construction is due to be completed. Throughout the year it became clear that there was disappointment with the plans. Helensburgh’s Community Council

presented a 50 page report to Argyll and Bute Council following a public consultation which showed that 55% of those surveyed did not approve of the overall proposal. Many respondents to their survey were underwhelmed by the facilities on offer feeling that they compared poorly with those in other towns and would do little to attract visitors. There was also major concern that the proposed location was a flood risk.

HCC has been trying to present to A&BC since May. At least the realisation has happened before the planning meeting.”

The Chamber reacted to the latest delay saying: “After 2030, the flood defences will have to be improved and extended. Which will be more capital cost. This is a message that

By January 2020 we really hope to report that building somewhere on the waterfront is well underway. In the meantime we wish you a happy and healthy 2019.

Whether or not this means that a decision will be taken to re-site the new pool adjacent to West Clyde Street in the area currently earmarked for retail development remains to be seen. Doubts have been raised about future demand for more retail space in an age of internet shopping.

to produce a large quantity of teddies.

Small teddies were knitted in support of a national children's charity campaign

Members of Helensburgh and Lomond Grey Matters and the Knitting Bee handed over 80 small knitted teddies in support of a national children’s charity campaign. Called “trauma teddies” they will be provided by police officers in partnership with Children 1st to comfort children affected by traumatic events, will also help police build a relationship

and turn the experience into something positive. The group donated the handknitted teddies to the charity and they will be given out as a simple distraction to help take a child’s focus away from potentially upsetting circumstances. Alison Gildea from Grey Matters said “The group were really responsive to the appeal and we’re delighted that in such a short time they managed

Once teddies have been received they will be dressed in a Children 1st T-shirt and distributed to police vehicles across Scotland. The back of the T-shirt features the number for Parentline, as a way to remind families that a kind and skilled listening ear is available seven days a week through the free helpline and webchat service. Children Ist say: “We have been truly overwhelmed by your response to our Trauma Teddy appeal. Thanks to your generosity we have now been able to supply all the participating police stations. This means we don’t currently require any more teddies, so please put down your needles for a well-deserved break! We will make another appeal for teddies in the future when more are needed.”

SU2C CAMPAIGN OVERCAME HEARTBREAK

• ESTABLISHED 1958 •

James & Colin Spy

Sometimes, being a what’s on rather than what’s happened magazine, we can’t always find space to report on the outcome of some of the community efforts we feature. There was one however which deserves special mention. The SU2C ( Stand Up To Cancer) campaign run locally by the Cancer Research UK shop was hit by heartbreak when gales swept away all the preparations for their main fundraising event, the Family Festival. This was a major setback for the shop which aims to be and has achieved the accolade of UK’s top fundraising shop. However Alison Sturgeon, Assistant Manager tells us: “We raised £1845 at our Take This event at the Rosslea Hall Hotel which brought to a close our 2018 campaign and we have now raised £12,066 in two months.

top shop is because the top two received huge cheques.“ Alison adds that the reason they are so passionate about Stand Up To Cancer, is because 100% of every penny goes on Translational Research, which turns clinical trials into treatments for cancer patients. She said: ”From all of us at CRUK Helensburgh, to everyone from Kilcreggan to Cardross, Balloch to Dumbarton, Rhu to Helensburgh and beyond - thank you.

are unbelievable. No other shop organised such a volume of events in such a short space of time and it’s incredibly satisfying to see everyone enjoy themselves at our events.”

Their ABBA Ladies Night last month raised £3,000. The cancelled Family Festival still raised £3,500 because all the local businesses, groups and stall holders refused to take back their money, so it was treated as a donation.

2019 will see the start of construction work on a new pontoon and jetty on Loch Long at Arrochar. It become possible after the community-led Loch Long Jetty Association was awarded £84,000 from one of the UK’s largest charitable funders. The funding will enable the charity to provide and install a pontoon and visitor moorings on Loch Long, for the use and enjoyment of Arrochar residents and visitors. The Garfield Weston Foundation which made the award commented that amazing projects involving local people who are helping their communities thrive, like the Association, are facing unprecedented demand for their services by being proactive and innovative. Dawn Gourlay, Secretary of the Loch Long Jetty Association says: “Arrochar is situated in a beautiful location at the head of Loch Long, surrounded by the picturesque Arrochar Alps, and is

Loch Long at Arrochar

located on the main trunk road to the West of Scotland and the Western Isles. “Many private yachts and chartered vessels sail up Loch Long every year, but with no pontoon or visitor moorings they are currently unable to safely moor and come ashore, to visit the village and explore the surrounding area. By providing these facilities it will also allow us to hold community led initiatives such as annual triathlon and raft races, which will help to enhance community spirit and benefit small businesses in the village.”

The Association said that it was very grateful for this opportunity afforded by the Weston Anniversary Fund in conjunction with its other main sponsors, the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the Hannah Stirling Loch Lomond Charitable Trust. The Association is extremely excited about what the future holds for the community in Arrochar. It is anticipated that construction work on the pontoon will commence in the Spring of 2019. GRDA SAY: “YOUR CARRIAGE AWAITS” The Gareloch Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association was recently voted organisation of the year in the Argyll and Bute Volunteer Awards, one more accolade in its 40 year history. The Group gives persons affected by disability the opportunity to ride and interact with horses, as well as providing a positive, welcoming and memorable experience to members and volunteers alike. 2019 will see a new development. The organisation explains: “We recognise that due to the progressive nature of some of our rider’s disabilities that riding is no longer an option, so we are in the process of developing Carriage Driving as an activity that will offer those persons who cannot ride an exciting alternative to horse riding.

Carriage training is well underway

“The carriage driver or passenger will experience the same level of physical activity as well as the psychological and emotional benefits of horse riding with the addition of taking on a new and exciting challenge in a controlled environment.” The Gareloch RDA has sourced significant funding for this, refurbishing the existing outdoor arena as an area more suitable for carriage driving. Training for carriage driving coaches is already well underway, with the expectation of sessions starting this month. The fully adapted carriage will accommodate a wheelchair bound rider as well as more ambulant persons. Their spokesperson added: “Additionally, as part of an ongoing expansion of the groups’ services, we plan to advertise to the local Armed Forces, perhaps those suffering from or experiencing mental health issues

Growing by Reputation & Recommendation

• Professional Uniformed Staff • Cleaning and Spring Cleans • Staff all hold Disclosure Scotland • Fully Insured • One off cleans • Builders clean • Eye for detail • All work guaranteed Working with horses builds confidence

brought on by combat stress. Interacting with horses is well documented as having fantastic healing properties for those persons affected by mental health issues.” The organisation has already established links with the nearby Naval base as well as many contract services employing ex-service members. It has 45 participants presently and this will likely increase with the new carriage driving service and the planned connection to the local Naval Base. More information visit garelochrda.org.

Volunteers from the length and breadth of Argyll and Bute were honoured at this year’s Volunteer of the Year awards, which were organised by Argyll & Bute Third Sector Interface. The event in Helensburgh, celebrated the huge contribution volunteers make – whether it’s manning a charity shop counter, supporting carers, carrying out beach cleans or just being a friend to someone in need. Out of the many hundreds of people who give up their time to volunteer, the awards recognised those who have gone over and above in categories including Regional Heroes, Individual Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and Health Volunteer of the Year. Fiona Donald, from Helensburgh, scooped the Health Volunteer of the Year award for her hard work

raising awareness of Parkinsons both locally and nationally. Kirsten Barrett, collected the Young Volunteer of the Year award for her dedication to coaching Taekwondo. Gerry Keenan picked up the Highly Commended Individual Volunteer of the Year award for his hard work as a volunteer with Helensburgh and Lomond Carers Service. Alan Stuart received the Highly Commended Sports Volunteer of the Year award for his dedication to Helensburgh Hockey Club, ensuring players have the best opportunities available to them. Local lady, Jean Holland, was rewarded for her lifelong volunteering endeavours, being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Gareloch Riding for the Disabled and Rhu and Shandon Gala were two of three finalists in the Organisation of the Year category. The top award – the Sargus Memorial prize – was also awarded to Fiona Donald, who will be using the prize to ensure that she takes a break and sees the world.

EARLY START FOR THE GEESE The new year begins on a noisy but fun note at RSPB Loch Lomond, where thousands of geese spend the winter months feeding and roosting. As the sun comes up (so yes, we’re talking about a very early start) you can watch as they move on to their daytime feeding areas – a must for anyone interested in one of our great local wildlife spectacles. Inevitably, you’re advised to wear suitable clothes and footwear – and if possible, bring binoculars. The January 12 session runs from 7.15am to 9.30am, and costs £7.50 (RSPB members £6), and booking is essential – you can get in touch at 01389 830670.

PARK RESTORATION IS THE YEAR’S HIGHLIGHT The progress over the year of the refurbishment of Hermitage Park has been one of the inspiring stories of the year, especially the work of some amazing and vital volunteers. Readers may remember that the £3.5 million project would never have got off the ground but for the determined efforts of the Friends of Hermitage Park who apart from being the driving force in sourcing funding have put in and continue to add hundreds of hours of hard labour. Their motivation is altruistic. Harder to determine the motivation of a group of mindless vandals who have so far tried to burn the new tables and benches and caused thousand of pounds of damage in the new pavilion. But to the good news. So far this year we’ve seen the pavilion rise from its foundations, the

complete renovation of the war memorial – the scene of a moving ceremony in November – and major planting, clearing and hard and soft landscaping works. The pavilion, built by local company Stewart and Shields and designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects, features a construction method called Passivhaus. This is the gold standard of green

and eco-friendly building which means it will be highly economical to heat and maintain. It’s believed this is the first public building to meet the Passivhaus standard in Scotland. It will have a café, community room, kiosk and toilets. The café, which will also have an outdoor seating area, will be run by a franchisee.

January 2019 | What's Up Doc?

FIRST RESPONDERS NEED NEW VOLUNTEERS Even if you live a relatively short distance from a hospital, it could take vital minutes for an ambulance to be on the scene following a suspected heart attack. In Helensburgh and Lomond the gap between 999 call and paramedic response has been filled scores of times by people called First Responders.

First Responders can improve patient survival and recovery

Helensburgh Community First Responders are trained and equipped volunteers who attend life threatening situations such as heart attack or cardiac arrest and care for a casualty until the arrival of The Scottish Ambulance Service. Responder Keith Shipman tells the CA: “Following three of our members moving on to careers in the Police, Ambulance Service and university medical training we need new volunteers. “Working directly to Scottish Ambulance you need to be willing to undertake training, complete Disclosure Scotland checks, have a full driving licence and have access to a car. Booking on at hours to suit you, you are available for immediate call out.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH… The World Health Organisation defines Health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of illness”.

That will mean different things to different people. Some may need to reconnect with friends or family, or simply ask for support. Others may want to improve their psychological outlook, either by getting professional help, dealing with alcohol or drug problems or using methods such as mindfulness to reduce stress.

While many people probably woke up on New Year’s Day in a state, I am not sure it would have been one of “complete well-being”! Scottish Ambulance add: “First Responders improve patient survival and recovery. You would be trained in a wide range of emergency skills, and use specialised equipment such as automatic external defibrillators and oxygen therapy.” Further information: Keith Shipman on 01436 670172 or 0775 3619305 or email k.shipman@btopenworld.com

That said, the start of a New Year gives us a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start with life. Although health can be subject to factors outside our control, getting the most out of life depends upon the balance of what we do physically, mentally and socially.

Or it may simply be a commitment to getting more regular exercise, losing weight or stopping smoking. Whatever it means to you, try not to get derailed by short term distractions, but stick to a longer term plan for 2019!

BOOKLET TO RECORD CENTENARY EVENTS A booklet is to be published by Argyll and Bute Council which captures the wide range of events that were held in the area to commemorate the centenary of World War One. It acknowledges the commitment and dedication shown by local communities to mark the anniversary. Over the last four years, the council and the WW1 Commemorative Steering Group have worked hard to actively engage with people of all ages, and have supported various communities, groups and individuals to deliver an ambitious programme of commemorative events. The WW1 Steering Group ensured that there were major events each year of the commemoration period 2014-18, and that these were spread across the Council area. This

included a Battle of Jutland commemoration in Helensburgh. The Islay event was also one of the main national commemorative events and involved partnership working with people from across the globe, as well as attendance by HRH the Princess Royal. A large number of additional events and exhibitions were also organised by local groups and organisations, and Argyll and Bute’s school pupils were actively involved in their own individual projects. Provost Len Scoullar said: “A tremendous

amount of work has been done by members of the World War One Commemorative Steering Group, and the people of Argyll and Bute, to pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, one hundred years ago, during World War One. “This booklet doesn’t aim to retell Argyll and Bute’s war story, but to give people an idea of the sheer amount of research, hardwork and commitment that has been done by our communities. It acknowledges and values the time and effort that the residents of Argyll and Bute have contributed to commemorate the sacrifices of their forebears and to leave a legacy for future generations.”

RESOLUTIONS I suppose I should be upfront about this, I’m writing about something I’ve never done and I’ll be keeping up that tradition in 2019, (writes Nick Cowie). Why? Well making big promises to yourself at the start of the year is exactly what you shouldn’t do to reach some of the popular destinations in our panel. The Romans started the whole fandango. They made vows to the god Janus in the hope of reward. I’d only comment that Janus was a two faced god and so unsurprisingly didn’t come up with the goods. Neither will a Big Resolution in the month named after him. A study from the University of Bristol which involved 3,000 people, showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions failed.

Those who did achieve their goal made it by NOT making a big resolution to start with. Instead they engaged in small measurable steps such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight" Multiple research shows that attempting to move any more than 5% on from where you are is courting failure. If you resolve say to lose a stone, drink less, take up running and save £10 a week, by January 31 chances are you’ll have run once, strained a ligament, put on a couple of pounds by comforting yourself with biscuits and saved nothing. You’ve joined the 88%.

Instead, in January, aim to lose two pounds, don’t run, walk one bus or train stop, drink one less glass of wine a week, buy one less coffee. Repeat and slightly escalate in February, again in March and April, e.g. two fewer coffees and wines, another 400 yards walking. By May you’ll have lost 10 pounds, become a

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY This is a subject I have previously discussed. However, it’s a good time of the year to remind everyone of the rules surrounding car seat safety. Although it is clearly not a legal requirement, it is important that children do not wear their thick, cosy jackets or snow suits while strapped into their car seats as the belts are unable to be tightened enough to secure them appropriately.

We pass on some good advice from the Neighbourhood Watch team. First of all they say when you are out try and keep within a group. Keeping with a number of people won’t leave you vulnerable to the types of crimes that are aimed towards individuals and will mean that other people can also keep an eye on you and vice versa. Don’t leave any members of your group behind at anytime.

and act out of character which in itself could present you with a dangerous situation. Always take your drink wherever you go to prevent the chances of it being spiked and keep an eye on anybody offering to buy you a drink to ensure it is not tampered with.

Book a taxi or a lift, organising a lift home or booking a taxi before going out will ensure that you get home safely and are not putting yourself in a position where Drink in moderation – It is easier you do not recognise the hire said than done however when you drink more alcohol than usual company, driver or area especially if you are out-of-town. you can lose your inhibitions

Always try and share transport with others. Keep in the spotlight – If you cannot stay in a group for whatever reason for the whole night or day always try to stick to public areas and don’t walk down unlit areas that can leave you susceptible to danger. And while you are out, don't leave car keys, ID cards or valuables near windows, doors or letterboxes, where burglars can reach through to steal them. Lock your garden gates and side entrances. Don't leave tools lying around in the garden which could be used to break into your home.
