Local News – JULY 2017
Top graduate art show comes to town “I'm talking to students this week about their proposals for what they might be exhibiting and will be putting together a programme in the next couple of weeks. “We will set up on the Thursday [July 20], and the work will go on show to the public from the Friday through to the Monday.”
Helensburgh will showcase one of the UK’s most prestigious graduate art shows this month - the work of 40 students from the Glasgow School of Art who are completing the M.Litt course in Fine Art Practice. From July 21 to 24, the students work will be exhibited at the Mackintosh Club in Sinclair Street, Helensburgh Parish Church and Colquhoun Square. It is the first time so many students have exhibited their work as a group outside the city. The event is being organised and run by the community council and it is hoped that it will raise the profile of the town, as a significant venue for national art and cultural events in the future.
Though students from the worldfamous school have exhibited throughout Glasgow, and on their own in towns elsewhere, in the past, the Helensburgh exhibition is the first time so many students will have taken their work outside the city to be put on display as a group.
consideration is also being given to using the square itself as a venue for performance art during the exhibition.
The students' work will be exhibited at the Mackintosh Club in Sinclair Street and at Helensburgh Parish Church in Colquhoun Square – while
John Quinn, the GSA's academic support manager, said: “The community council contacted us last year looking to organise an arts festival.

“This is about taking our students' work to a new audience. We're looking for it to become an annual event. “The students involved have been to Helensburgh to visit the sites and I'll be getting their feedback soon.” HCC member Tariq Durrani, who first suggested the idea, said: “Something like this hasn't happened before, so it would be a feather in our cap for Helensburgh to be the place for budding artists to come and display their projects.”

Helensburgh Community Council has been in talks with GSA staff since last year over arrangements for the show.
“We've had exhibitions throughout Glasgow on a regular basis in the past, but in terms of an exhibition on this scale being focussed on a town outside Glasgow, this will be a first for us.

for the Royal Air Force. It even played a role in developing the Dambusters’ bouncing bomb and its smaller relative Highball, which was designed for attacking ships such as Germany’s Tirpitz pocket battleship. “One system tested by MAEE was the Lindholme Gear air-dropped liferaft system, which is still used in search and rescue missions to this day. Sadly, because of the experimental nature of its work some personnel were killed in local accidents.” The unveiling of the memorial overlooking the Gareloch and the

The memorial itself is the main standardised design already widely utilised by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (ABCT), and its objective is to eventually commemorate each known disused airfield site in Britain with one of two forms of standardised granite memorial. ABCT is the world’s first national airfield charity and making a real and revolutionary difference to the advancement of everyday society. A makeshift wooden shed in a Garelochside garden hides a remarkable yacht restoration project carried out by cousins Bill McLaren and Tim Henderson (writes Nick Cowie) Remarkable because of its complexity, but remarkable too because Bill is 73 and Tim 79 and over three years they’ve put in more than 1500 man hours to bring Dione, the last of the 16 Gareloch class yachts, built by McGruers in 1924, back to full seaworthy condition. been in the same age group so as Bill put it: “It’s been a bit of a Last of the Summer Wine project.” He added: “ Dione had been derelict for 35 years and when she arrived at my house a child could have climbed from left to right through the keel and the hull. 60% of the wood had to
be replaced.” .” Former Naval officer Bill said that while woodworking had always been his hobby the pair had to learn shipwrighting skills as they went along. He added: “Tim has a vast amount of marine engineering experience but on a boat nothing is straight and square so a lot is done by eye and that’s a skill you have to learn.” The yachts, all named after Greek goddesses, have over the years been lovingly restored by various owners.

A group of primary five to seven pupils visited the Queen’s Harbour Master at HMNB Clyde,
Pupils also staged a STEM showcase for parents and carers to celebrate their learning so far. It involved all the pupils, who arranged posters, displays and models, plus activities for visitors to take part in. Acting Depute Head Teacher at Colgrain Primary, Linda Candlish, said: “We would like to thank the DYW group for their funding award. This will help us to continue to develop STEM experiences for the children. The STEM showcase was very well received by the Colgrain community. As the summer holidays begin we’re reminded that you don’t have to be an experienced hill walker to enjoy several of Scotland’s most spectacular views. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park has published a guide to a range of ‘Wee Hills with Big Views’ that can be enjoyed by people of all levels of fitness and experience. And they tell us it’s so easy to get
to the Park and start enjoying eight little gems which the Park is promoting for a summer stroll. Close to home there is Gouk Hill. On the east of Helensburgh, Gouk Hill sits on the western edge of the National Park. The hill is 277m
high and forms part of the long distance coast-to-coast walk, the John Muir Way. Conic Hill offers a short but fairly stiff 361m climb beginning in Balmaha. Conic Hill offers magnificent views of Loch Lomond and its islands starting from about a third of the way up a well-trodden path. It comes with the added bragging bonus of being able to say you’ve walked part of the West Highland

A descriptive panel has been erected by Helensburgh Heritage Trust beside the Battle of Glen Fruin cairn at the west end of the glen. Sponsored by Luss Estates and prepared by Sarah Crome, the panel tells the story of the battle.
to mark the approximate site of the clan battle that took place there in 1603.
The decision to erect it followed the construction of a pathway up to the cairn last year for the Trust by the Community Payback project.
The final part of the project is to tidy up and clear vegetation so that visitors sitting on the wooden bench have a better view down the glen.
The cairn, which is located beside the road near the head of the Glen on land owned by Luss Estates, was erected in the 1960's
has written about the battle says: “That a battle took place in Glen Fruin on the 7th February 1603 between the Colquhouns and the MacGregors, that the number of Colquhoun dead was very much greater than MacGregor dead, and that the MacGregors were subsequently severely punished for their actions are about the only three facts that most historians will agree upon regarding the Battle of Glen Fruin.” See his full article on www. helensburgh-heritage.co.uk

JULY 2017 – What's Up Doc?
Park progress on time lapse CAMERAS
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: GAINING BY GIVING…
The Friends of Hermitage Park have been keeping us updated with progress on the multi million pound Park refurbishment which is being recorded on time lapse cameras. They tell us designs for the fountain plaza and new play area are being finalised and the contractor for the new pavilion will be appointed very soon. Meanwhile time lapse cameras purchased by the Friends have been installed and are busy recording the works in progress. The hard core sub-base of the new paths has been laid out along with ducts for the new lights along the paths. Friends say: “The tarmac surface will be laid later as it is better to do all the tarmac work at the end when it will not be damaged
14
by other work and laying it all at once gives better joins between the different sections.” The Friends have been busy dividing and moving perennials from the old flower beds and storing them in a nursery bed so they can be replanted in the new flower beds. They add: “We are constantly looking into grant funding to try and raise money for the extras and our bank balance has reduced dramatically as we have handed over the Friends’ £20,000 contribution to the project costs.”
Last month I ran my first marathon in Stirling. It was a great experience, both on the day and in the months of training leading up to it. I have benefited physically from the exercise and also found running a great way to clear the mind! However, I was struck by how many of my fellow runners had also used the opportunity to raise funds for others, through various charities, to support people and their families affected by diseases such as cancer, diabetes and dementia. It was a reminder also that many people do things for others, either as volunteers or fundraisers, in the process gaining

from it themselves. Often this work goes unnoticed and without volunteers in our local community many things would simply not happen. Volunteering can help people learn new skills, make friends, build confidence and for younger people can be a useful way to gain certificates and awards, such as the Duke of Edinburgh awards. Locally work is being done to raise awareness about volunteering, for all age groups, and it would be worthwhile contacting your local authority to find out more, if you are interested. A potential saving of several hundred pounds and NO initial cost
As a first time seller I would have struggled to find the required money for the Home Report but with the package on offer I was able to market straight away and managed to sell within only one week and achieved over the Home Report valuation. (West Princes Street)
This had been our family home for decades and we had not been used to buying and selling however Property Bureau have sold most of the homes in this area over the last few years and they were recommended by another neighbour they sold for. We sold within three weeks for over our asking price. (Craigendoran)
Having sold several properties over the years we recognised this is an excellent way of helping with sales costs. We must have saved over £500 in marketing costs and Property Bureau achieved a sale price which was over our expectations. (East Clyde Street)
I had seen a property I liked and the thought of being able to market the flat with no initial costs was appealing. Property Bureau got my flat on the market within 24 hours of instruction and sold within one week which meant I managed to buy the property I wanted. Excellent service and would use again (East Princes Street)

Beekeepers keep The hills BuZZing As we reach high summer the hills of Helensburgh are alive with bees thanks to the work of the Helensburgh and District Beekeepers Association. so many stories on television and in the press that these precious creatures are under threat from 21st century agricultural practices.
Hundreds of thousands of bees are hard at work in our hills and gardens as beekeeping has become more popular in Helensburgh and Lomond.
The beekeepers say that if you are interested in bees and beekeeping you are welcome at their monthly meetings.
Helensburgh & District Beekeepers Association was formed in 1990 and has an enthusiastic following of active beekeepers. Over the summer members will be visiting various apiaries for practical beekeeping sessions. Their informative website (www.helensburghbees.com) reminds us of just how vital these tiny creatures are to our very existence. It says: “Bees fulfill a vital function in the food chain by pollinating fruit and seed crops and the honey they gather provides us with a nutritious and delicious natural food.“ Interest in bees has grown markedly in recent years, especially since there have been

its own special story... information centres for local days out, plus the libraries are a good source of activity in themselves, with plenty of books and computers to keep children busy, and they often have storytime for toddlers and parents. Check out the leisure centres - there are plenty of indoor sports and activities children can participate in. The swimming pools in our area often offer
special deals and fun days.
Museums and galleries often have new exhibitions and events running in the summer. Many art galleries put on special events for children and families, and they are usually free. You could go geo caching. The Clyde Sea Lochs trail is dotted with information boards with a new set of caches themed around the Lochs. Download the free app to your smartphone, check out other caches local to you and get going. It soon becomes addictive.

If it is raining have a movie day with popcorn - homemade of course, or get cooking. Pick a recipe with the children, go shopping for ingredients and cook something together that you can enjoy eating afterwards.
Sunny days are great for simple activities like picnics and ball games. This can be done as close to home as in the back garden. Juries are a cornerstone of our legal system. They can be used for criminal trials as well as some civil matters, such as personal injury cases. It is a civic duty and you must attend court if you are cited as a juror, unless you are ineligible, disqualified from doing so or excused. In criminal cases it is the job of the jury to listen to all of the evidence and submissions made for both sides and then decide if the case against the accused has been proven. It is a serious role with significant consequences for the individual on trial. The selection process is done
O R K N E Y,
at random and taken from the electoral role. You must therefore be over eighteen years of age. Someone with a criminal record is unlikely to qualify and some jobs will make others ineligible, for example a practicing solicitor is not able to sit on a jury. In the event you are cited but would wish to be excused from attending then you must contact the sheriff clerk. Only genuine and relevant factors will be taken into consideration, such as if you have already been a juror within the last two years. Failure to attend without being properly excused will be contempt of court.

Caple Head of Coaching Strategy, Brian Cameron displaying his UEFA C-Licence, with members of the Futsal
Ardencaple FC has announced continued sponsorship from Helensburgh based firm LC Roofing in the form of yet another donation of £500. The company's owners have long enjoyed a rewarding relationship with the Club spanning the last decade. This latest pledge of financial support will help Caple make further progress with its plans to attain Legacy Status, the very top accolade within the SFA's Quality Mark accreditation scheme. Craig Holborn, Caple Chairman
said: "LC Roofing's donation in particular will be used to fund the purchase of specialist goals and a set of balls to support a brand new initiative at Caple as we introduce a Futsal section, (a modified form of the game played with five players per side on a smaller, typically indoor, pitch) “Players aged 5 - 15 years are
Caple's adoption of Futsal forms part of its transition strategy along the SFA's Quality Mark scheme from its current status as a Development Club towards Legacy Status. To achieve this it must comply fully with a long list of very strict criteria, which not only includes specific targets on the scope and size of the Club's football activities but also encompasses areas such as Social Development, Charitable Activities and Community Empowerment. Caple is also delighted to announce that Brian Cameron, Head of Coaching Strategy has recently obtained his UEFA C-Licence, a precursor on a fasttrack process to obtaining his UEFA-B Licence, resulting in Brian becoming one of the highest qualified coaches in the local area.

eVenTs near and Far in new guide Summer is here, and Argyll and Bute Council is helping residents and visitors make the most of it by hosting an extensive ‘what’s on’ guide to events throughout the region. Some of the events are in Helensburgh, and will be highlighted, as ever, in the CA’s comprehensive what’s on guide. But as some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland are within an easy drive, the wider attractions give an added spur to enjoy a day out.
encouraging 11 to 18-year-olds to volunteer over the summer. Also in Helensburgh there’s news that the Heritage Trust, Arts Society and the Council are hoping to take part in the national Open Doors Day usually held in September.
It is over 20 years since the last participation and the aim is to let people “see through the keyhole at some of the town’s notable buildings and houses which are not usually open to the public. Other summer events include the Lochgilphead Celtic and Pictish Festival, and Summer Dance, an evening of summer Scottish dances, which takes place on 4 July and 22 August in the Church of Scotland Centre in Oban.
The guide lists upcoming fun days, festivals, theatre shows and concerts. Shows range from big-ticket events such as comedian John Bishop’s ‘Winging it’ Work in Progress at the Corran Halls in Oban on 10 August to community events such as GIVE – Get Inspired through Volunteering and Engagement, taking place on a number of dates in Helensburgh and aimed at
On 12 July, mountaineer Doug Scott CBE will be at Oban’s Corran Halls to tell the tale of his legendary crawl down The Ogre in Pakistan. At the same venue in September BBC TV wildlife presenter and cameraman Gordon Buchanan will share an insight into his experiences with some of the world’s most majestic animals. www.argyll-bute.gov.uk and click on ‘what’s on’.

highland games in Full swing staged on Saturday, July 15, when it will again secure its reputation as a landmark competition that’s one of a very small handful of top events of its kind in Scotland.
Both the Luss and the Loch Lomond Highland Games are on the calendar this month
July’s big, big local attractions include the Loch Lomond Highland Games at Moss o’Balloch – a fun event with a serious professional edge – and the Luss Highland Games.
Events will include wrestling, cycling, tossing the caber, and tug of war, but perhaps the most eagerly anticipated competition of the day will be the Scottish Highland Games Association World Heavyweight Championship. With competitors from Poland, America and Iceland taking part, it is reckoned set to be an exciting and closely contested event. Spectators will be entertained throughout the action-packed day with a full programme of track and field events including running, jumping, cycling, wrestling, the heavyweight events of ball, hammer, weight and caber, plus the Highland dancing and pipe band competitions.
The month starts as it means to go on with the Luss event on Saturday, July 1, with the Games Field playing host (from about 11,30am) to a whole catalogue of races and other tests of strength and skill for all age groups.

It also features an open piping competition, a strongman contest, and very much more besides – and will surely draw hordes of visitors to the area

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
