PUBLIC CALL FOR LEISURE CENTRE RETHINK After a fairly lukewarm reaction from residents towards the £18m Helensburgh Waterfront plan, the Council decided it needed extra time to consider public survey responses. Helensburgh’s Community Council presented a 50 page report to Argyll and Bute Council following a public consultation which showed that 55% of those surveyed did not approve of the overall proposal. A majority also felt that the facilities that were proposed for the leisure centre were not adequate for their needs. Essentially there was a feeling that replacing the existing swimming pool with a similar set up in an “uninspiring” new facility showed a lack of ambition and would do nothing to attract people to the town. The Community Council told the CA : “We have used the community's opinions and comments to create a set of seven recommendations that, if used to modify the proposals, would address a significant proportion of the public's concerns.” The report recommends that Mobile Hairstylist

there should be fun elements in the leisure centre for families such as slides for the studio pool, flumes and a wave machine. Respondents said that there should be a viewing area for parents/carers, spectator seating, a multi-use sports hall, larger pool or gym, soft play area, and 98% wanted a cafe rather the vending machines. The recommendations in the report including reversing the decision to position the leisure centre East West back to the original North South orientation to avoid flooding. Designers also should consider all possible options to create a distinctive design statement that inspires the community. There was a lot of opposition to new shop units. The Community Council recommends

Sandy told the Trust’s online magazine that when he moved to Helensburgh in 1975, he knew it was the town for him. “There’s a mile of flowering cherry trees in spring,” he said. “What a fantastic place to live.” The Woodland Trust is a UK wide organisation so Sandy explained to members that the town is a bit of a well-kept secret with a long history of tree appreciation. As early as 1875, local people demanded the planting of trees, and it’s thought some of the oldest cherries still flowering today may be examples of those original pioneers. Many other trees have been planted in the decades and the town’s beauty has earned it the nickname ‘the Garden City of the Clyde’, and it’s one of the

A remarkable event took place in Arrochar recently with the opening of a Community Hydro. It was the culmination of a scheme to generate income to reinvest in local communities. The funds required to build the scheme were raised through a community share offer, which was open to local residents and the wider renewable energy community. The build cost of £660K was raised in just two weeks during the Summer of 2017 The Hydro was opened by Sir Malcolm Colquhoun of Luss, Chairman of Luss Estates Company. Arrochar Community Hydro Society also welcomed Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy. Members of the local community came together with the wider renewable energy community and joined a piper and local school children from Arrochar Primary School, to walk up to the power house. Guests were able to see the hydro scheme officially turned on and then see inside the powerhouse. Highland Eco Design, the project contractors, were on hand to discuss the mechanics of the
Local primary school children attended the Hydro opening
power house and explain the projected income which will be generated to the benefit of the two local development trusts: Luss and Arden Development Trust and Arrochar and Tarbet Development Trust. The river and surrounding land, on which the scheme is built, is leased for a peppercorn rent of £100 per annum by Luss Estates to Arrochar Community Hydro. The Development Trusts worked alongside Community Energy specialists Energy4All, Local Energy Scotland and Luss Estates. Both trusts have Community
Action Plans compiled through local consultation and working with their local Community Councils. The trusts aim to improve the quality of life for residents, especially the young and the elderly within their rural locations. A priority for both trusts is operating and maintaining the community hall facilities that provide a social, cultural, recreational and educational hub for residents. Income from the hydro project will help to stabilise and sustain this vital community asset and service. For further information: www.arrocharhydro.coop

ONE BOOK, 100 WRITERS, 100 HEROINES Helensburgh Heroes has issued a call to action to female writers of any age or experience to help commemorate the life of the influential Cardross suffragette Eunice Murray. Eunice Guthrie Murray was a key figure in the fight for female suffrage, the first woman to stand for a Scottish Parliamentary seat and was also a prolific writer. The aim is to create a book written by 100 local women of all ages. It will be titled: “To the Women of All Ages by Women of All Ages.” Helensburgh Heroes bid for a share of the £170,000 Scottish Government Vote Centenary Grant Scheme to fund it and won a £4,696 grant. Heroes Trustee Phil Worms told the CA he is looking for contributors from primary school age to elder community members
who will select a female role model and then write a maximum of 300 words about their nominee and explain their choice. He said: “There will be no set criteria, the nominee simply has to be a woman that has inspired the writer in some way. The charity will be running a number of drop in contributor workshops over the coming weeks, where professional advice and support will be given by local writers.” The book will then be professionally published and
launched at an event on January 21st 2019, the 141st anniversary of Eunice’s birth in Cardross. The event also will see the start of a free to enter exhibition “To the Women of All Ages” which will conclude on Friday 8th March 2019 (International Women’s Day), telling some of the stories of the contributors and their ‘Heroines’.

Seminary will remain a ruin
An arts company leading a £10m bid to salvage St Peter’s Seminary near Cardross has folded after it failed to secure funding. The arts company NVA had been at the forefront of plans to rescue the modernist building. But it now has announced it is to close, partly because it failed to find the money needed for St Peter’s full restoration. The seminary, which became derelict after it was abandoned in 1980, is regarded as a modernist masterpiece.
NVA, a critically acclaimed arts company that specialised in open air light, sound and kinetic productions launched a bid to rescue the building after staging its Hinterland show at St Peter’s in 2016. The light and sound show launched the Scottish government's festival of architecture. The event sold out and audiences came from across the UK and Europe.
It was built in 1966 as a training centre for priests to a design by the architects Gillespie, Kidd and Coia, but was never entirely watertight. Since it closed down, its arches and walls have become covered in graffiti and battered by the elements.
NVA were given a £4.2m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Creative Scotland in March 2016 to allow key parts of the building to be made weathertight and protected, to ensure it was safe for public performances and activities.
A path network, walled garden and bridges in the surrounding 104-acre estate – were also to be restored. However NVA said in a statement: “Despite our best efforts we were unable to guarantee the viable future for the St Peter's Seminary that we had imagined and hoped for. In the end, we had no choice but to bring the capital project to an end.” It said its efforts to find an alternative plan for the seminary and its own business floundered after Creative Scotland, the arts funding agency, announced in January NVA would not be given core funding.

FRIENDS HONOUR ARROCHAR VOLUNTEER An Arrochar man was recently honoured by the Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, the independent conservation and heritage charity for the National Park area. At the charity’s annual general meeting awards were given to Duncan MacLachlan, director of Arrochar and Tarbet Community Development Trust, who recently oversaw the successful opening of the Arrochar Community Hydro Scheme and Murdoch Cameron and Jim Biddulph, who are chairman and secretary respectively of Balloch and Haldane Community Council. Duncan has been a stalwart of the community development trust for many years and saw his efforts recognised with the Gavin Arneil Award as Volunteer of the Year. Although the award has been presented for several years, this was the first year it was named after Professor Arneil, who died aged 94 in January. He was a hugely influential paediatrician and

Duncan told the the Lochside Press web site : “The launch of the community hydro scheme is a real asset to Arrochar and Tarbet, but just a small part of the work that needs to be done to ensure this community is kept vibrant and

ageing and the changes that have occurred may vary, but in every case growth has continued. “All of them show that productivity and creativity can be extended well into later life and provide role models for future generations.“
The twenty established writers who speak to us through Autumn Voices represent a total of over one hundred and fifty years of varied, fascinating and colourful life experience since passing the age of seventy. Robin says: “The writers in this book are proof of Emerson’s dictum that you don’t grow old, you become old when you stop growing. The responses to
The interviews in the book show us men and women who see old age as life’s last great adventure and who have chosen to embrace it, to regard it as a new and interesting phase of life, full of possibilities while also accepting the losses age brings with honesty, courage and even humour. The book shows that too often, because of the weight of negative expectations, so much potential that could be released on retirement and so many ambitions that could be fulfilled in later life come to nothing. By providing positive role models and by furthering our understanding of the nature of

creativity in later life, Autumn Voices will help future generations lead creative and fulfilled lives. Robin adds: “These mature autumn voices speak to us from a point where experience is at its maximum, perspective at its broadest and mastery of craft at its peak. We have much to learn from them.” Robin will talk about his book at the Tales from the Big Chair Event on the 12th July in the Heroes Centre Sinclair Street. autumnvoices.co.uk, www.robinlloydjones.com

Eagle-eyed fans of the movie will spot Glen Mallan Jetty at Loch Long, Arrochar, when they go to see the film at the cinema over the coming weeks. What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: PLANNING AHEAD… Cardross Tennis Club
ENABLE Scotland’s Helensburgh branch and Cardross Tennis Club have been awarded a total of £150,000 from the Lottery and a Trust. The local branch of ENABLE plans to use its grant of £94,825 to employ a new development officer who will put together a programme of support for people in the town experiencing loneliness, isolation or poor mental health. Working with a team of volunteers they will consult with local people to shape and deliver a vision designed to help increase confidence and bring people together.
improvements to community life and the natural environment. It will use the money to refurbish its courts. Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie said: “An ENABLE development officer who will focus on tackling loneliness, isolation and poor mental health will be an invaluable asset to the town, and will help a great number of people. “Cardross Tennis Club is right at the heart of the village and all of the staff do a fantastic job maintaining the club to the highest standard. This refurbishment will bring the club back up to its peak standard.”
Meanwhile Cardross Tennis Club has received £44,843 from the SUEZ Communities Trust, a not for profit funding organisation dedicated to making lasting
A few weeks ago the Scottish government produced a report on health priorities for the next decade. It encourages innovative and new ideas to bring about a healthier Scotland, and rightly says that “wellbeing cannot be created by the NHS alone”. The key areas for action include creating healthy communities, child health, mental well-being, harmful substances (such as smoking, drugs and alcohol), poverty and obesity. It says that foundations for good health are laid down at home and at school, but currently Scottish people are generally less healthy than most other people across
Europe. It suggests that modern technologies may play a part in making a difference in the future, possible using social media and artificial intelligence to support traditional approaches. It is hoped that greater wellness will result from improved education, activity levels, access to sports facilities and better alternatives to junk food. Whilst some cynics may say that this could be a way to divert attention away from financial pressures in the NHS, it is certainly true that good habits start early! Perhaps the future will see Scotland lose its reputation of heavy drinking and over-eating, and instead be renowned for its athletes and healthy living!

Summer Dip into
The summer holidays are on us and at time of writing we’ve just had a great spell of good weather. It is to be hoped that the school hols don’t bring the traditional deluge. (writes Nick Cowie) For singles, couples and families alike the high spot will be getting away from work for two weeks of sea, sun and sangria. But remember you go away to wind down and de-stress. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Adopting the theory that "less is more" can help you to enjoy your time
with family and friends. Plan some time to yourself. Choose something you enjoy doing alone, such as reading, taking a bath, yoga, walking or listening to music, and do it for at least 15 minutes per day. So that’s the top two weeks, but the school holidays stretch to six weeks and time can, as we know,
start to drag for young people despite social media and video games. A quick check around community and local council websites and indeed the Community Advertiser reveals a wealth of local events ranging from tennis camps to highland games, art,
drama and crafts classes. All the swimming pools also have special programmes and coaching sessions. Traditional pastimes like picnics are always popular. Let the children pick somewhere on the map (say within 30-40 miles) that you haven’t been to before

A Sunday walk down the City’s Style Mile can end at The St Enoch Centre where they paint little ones faces for free every Sunday from 12-4pm.
You don’t even have to go out. A good one for a rainy day is to have a kids MasterChef competition at home. This works especially well if they have a few friends over. Have a competition for who makes the best pizza. Making dough from scratch is fun (and tiring) but very inexpensive. Plus an added bonus, you don’t have to cook dinner.
You can bask on the beach too. The Riverside Museum's summer beach returns for the holidays. Check out the exhibits on at the museum, and step aboard The Tall Ship Glenlee for a taste of Glasgow's maritime heritage.
We sometimes forget that right on our doorstep are two top international destinations, Glasgow and the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, but how many of us become tourists for the day ourselves? Top of any list must be the freebies, especially if the holiday money cache is looking a bit depleted. Start at the Kelvingrove museum, a family favourite for generations. This summer, you'll be able to see a fascinating, myth-busting new exhibition looking at ancient Egyptian animal mummies called Gifts for the Gods: Animal Mummies Revealed. There are 20 free
The National Library of Scotland at Kelvin Hall is an exciting new visitor experience with entertainment and inspiration for all ages and features a celebration of 80 years of the Beano. July in the National Park is the best time of year for local festivals including food, drink and music - such as the Lomond Folk Music Festival. There are organised nature walks, water activities and of course various Scottish Highland Games including the Rosneath Gathering, Luss Highland Gathering or Loch Lomond Highland Games all celebrated in July. In fact, So much to do that there will be plenty of ideas left over for next year.

July 2018 – Legal Matters
FLY ME TO DUNOON…
Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: CONTEMPT OF COURT
When you’ve done all the immediately local Highland Games events you might just consider a final fling by taking a wee trip to enjoy what many still see as the grand-daddy of them all – the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon on August 23 to 25. This is a spectacular event which traditionally attracts competitors from across the west coast and far beyond, and a chance to enjoy one of the country’s most attractive locations at a time when summer is on the verge of turning into autumn. For full details of this premier league annual event visit www.cowalgathering.com
Contempt of court is the term used for an interference with the administration of justice. It can take many forms and under the Contempt of Court Act 1981 is punishable by a maximum sentence of three months’ imprisonment, a fine or possibly both. The court process itself demands a certain level of behaviour or conduct in order to be able to function effectively. An individual cannot enter a court room and interrupt proceedings; a newspaper must be careful about publishing details that may be prejudicial to a trial, jurors must not discuss details of a case they are sitting on. A wilful and deliberate disregard for a civil court order could be considered contempt.
A common example of this would be where one parent has an order from the court providing them with contact with their child and the parent with residence refuses to make the child available. Courts have historically been reluctant to impose a prison sentence for this type of contemp. However, parties are becoming increasingly proactive in pursuing contempt proceedings in family actions and the courts are showing a firmer stance against parents who are deliberately being obstructive. You should contact your solicitor for advice if you require assistance with raising or responding to contempt proceedings.

Many of us enjoy a good read but how many of us look at our books again once they are finished. Donating books is both a great way to help charities and to find an engrossing new read. The British Red Cross tell us the best kept secret in Helensburgh is their shop in East Princes Street. They have been selling books for over 30 years and welcome donations of well cared books for resale. The folks who run the Red Cross Used Book Sale every Wednesday between 12 noon and 3.45 at 116 East Princes Street would like this great resource to be less of a secret. They have a fantastic selection of books, CDs, DVDs. Most paperbacks are a £1 and all proceeds go to the work of the
Red Cross. There are special interest books such as railways and golf, football and rugby, maps and books on walks. Travel books about most countries in the world. They also have a large selection of knitting patterns and knitting needles, embroidery, cross stitch, sheet music and cookery and gardening books. They also sell jigsaws. They say: “Please call in. You’re sure to find something of interest. We’ve got a better stock than many bookshops. Happy reading.”
Can you sell space? We are looking for a positive and outgoing media tele sales professional to join our team and sell advertising in our four glossy monthly magazines.

It will enable them to focus on particular areas of skills they would like to improve on and be more alert to potential dangers.

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE A SHARE OF OUR £1,000 COMMUNITY CHEST The Helensburgh Community Advertiser has teamed up with leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey West Scotland to offer local good causes across the Helensburgh and Lomond area the chance to receive a share of £1,000 in our fantastic Community Chest initiative! We want you, our readers, to nominate worthy causes in the Helensburgh Community Advertiser circulation area which you feel are most deserving of a share of this generous cash award. It could be a local charity which relies heavily on donations to keep up its good work in the community, or an organisation which makes a real difference to the place where you live – the choice is yours. We are accepting nominations for the Community Chest until the 16th July. Our editorial team will then whittle down the nominations to produce a shortlist of the most deserving causes, before inviting readers to vote for their top three favourite charities or local causes to receive a cash boost! Audrey Ross, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey
West Scotland, which is currently building high-quality new homes at its Hermitage Grange development in Helensburgh, said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with the Helensburgh Community Advertiser to offer readers the chance to nominate their favourite local cause to receive a share of our £1000 cash donation. “The Community Chest is a great way to recognise the unsung heroes that are found in the local communities where we build new
homes, and I’d urge readers to get involved and nominate their favourite cause.” To nominate a good cause for the Community Chest, email editor@ communityadvertiser.co.uk with “Community Chest nomination” in the subject line, and include your name, telephone number, details of the organisation you are nominating, and why you think it should receive a share of £1,000. The deadline for nominations is 5pm on the 16th July.

Local News – July 2018
NEW PATH AT HELENSBURGH RESERVOIR A jaunt round Helensburgh Reservoir will now be more like a ‘walk in the park’ now that volunteers have created a new path. Helensburgh and District Access Trustees have spent time, money and a lot of effort creating a surfaced path that will allow users to complete the circuit with much drier feet than before. A small band of energetic folk took six days to complete the work aided by Robert McKendry, groundworks contractor, from
Milton. Three of the Trustees have become qualified dumper truck drivers and so the Trust hired these machines so they could transport the road planings provided by Argyll & Bute Council around the reservoir to form the path base. Then it was hard work raking the planings and using a whacker to consolidate the surface.
Fishermen, numerous walkers with and without dogs expressed appreciation of the work being done as they passed by the volunteers and a couple of folk made donations to the Trust. One of the Trustees said, “We always try to inform path users about the Trust, how we all work as volunteers and that donations are all reinvested in path work in the area as no other group or agency does any work on these paths. The paths are very important as they allow easy access to the countryside for the many thousands of local folk and visitors who want to get out and about and enjoy the fresh air in our beautiful area.”

To date the Trust has created and repaired 12 km of paths and walking routes in the immediate vicinity of Helensburgh and with the Three Lochs Way, is actively engaged on a further 50 km. The first Luss Highland Gathering was held in 1875 and has been held annually since, except for a break during the two World Wars. It has also become the focus of the annual gathering of the Clan Colquhoun, bringing with it an influx of visitors from distant lands seeking their heritage. This month also sees on Saturday 14th, the Loch Lomond Highland Games held at the Moss O' Balloch. This doesn’t include a further 350 competitors competing in other events throughout the day such as piping, athletics, wrestling, cycling, dancing and all the usual heavyweight events.
