towN to host top eveNt Argyll Gathering, a new Scottish event celebrating the best of music, culture and the arts is to be held in Helensburgh next month. Several top acts have been confirmed. Opening its doors August 19th 20th the event will showcase the best in traditional contemporary Scottish music, local food and drink and feature interactive workshops. Festival organiser James Windebank says: “Community is at the heart of the festival and its goal is to celebrate the best of what Scotland has to offer culturally. Argyll Gathering is not just a festival, but a platform for people to interact and form an artistic movement. “So far, artists confirmed are the former lead singer of one of Scotland’s most celebrated groups, Runrig‘s Donnie Munro, who will be performing live with a full band. The most famous bagpipe band in the world, Red Hot Chilli Pipers will be bringing their groundbreaking fusion of traditional

Scottish music and rock/pop anthems, Scottish supergroup Treacherous Orchestra are the third of the festival’s headliners - their foot-stomping, Celtic rock performance is sure to blow spectators away.” The festival also boasts Bwani Junction who will perform “Graceland” by Paul Simon, Elephant Sessions, Manran, Federation of the Disco Pimp, Jarlath Henderson Band, Blue Rose Code, Daimh, Fat-Suit, Pronto Mama and, finally Nae Plans (Adam Sutherland & Hamish Napier) will perform over both days with special guests and added surprises.” A community workshop tent, aimed at all ages will showcase music, art and the Gaelic language. There will be delicious food

courtesy of Food From Argyll, sweet treats, a carefully selected beer and ale bar, an independent spirits bar and children’s entertainment will be on offer making the festival something for all the family to enjoy. James told the CA: Having been born and raised in Helensburgh, I’ve seen the town evolve and change over 30 years. The one thing that I always wanted my hometown to have was a spectacular event that focussed on bringing people together to listen to great music, have a dram and really enjoy themselves as a community of people.”

, RO U N WA N I M E I ND N, B NN DO ANRA ION A ACTS T M E C R JUN Y MO D N MA FIRME N CO

He and co-curator, Nick Lawrie have independently worked on some of the largest cultural projects in the world . They add: “We believe that an event such as this should enhance its home turf, and really bring something to the table.”

The group told the Community Advertiser that since Scottish Ministers approved HCWG’s application to register a community interest in some two hectares of badly-neglected woodland in Helensburgh, known as Castle Woods it marks the first step towards a community buyout and it means that the owners are now prohibited from selling the land to any party other than HCWG.

Castle Woods is an area of ancient semi-natural woodland which the landowners have sought for over a decade to turn into a 72-unit housing estate. It is protected by a Tree Preservation Order. The northern part is a Local Nature Conservation Site.

Big Top Comes to Cove

This year’s Sea Change festival in Cove and Kilcreggan features Lets Circus, an Australian troupe who will set up their own Big Top inside Cove Burgh Hall They’ll give performances on Saturday night and Sunday morning, with an all ages workshop on Saturday afternoon. The festival kicks off on Friday with a Para Handy evening screening two episodes from the legendary TV series with a seafaring supper in between. And adding that vital spark to the proceedings is the actor Joyce Falconer who will MC the proceedings and regale the audience with her own take on sea shanties. Saturday morning sees the fancy dress paraders assemble at Kilcreggan Boatyard at 10.30

ready to march to Cove Burgh Hall in their costumes led by the Circus. Then the inner marcher will be catered for at the annual Mermaid Cafe . On Sunday morning, another circus performance and then the festival moves up to Cove Park for a Barbecue with the Peninsula Choir on hand to serenade guests. Cove Park is also hosting an exhibition of children’s art from pupils at Kilcreggan and Rosneath Primary schools, some of whom attended the Hands On After School Art Project run by Cove Park’s Hands On outreach programme. coveburghhall.uk

Dr Goel, a retired consultant paediatrician wrote the book, Great Scots, because few people could name even 10 famous Scots. Community groups are being invited to bid for a share of a cash pot to help improve their local areas. Argyll and Bute Council has £50,000 available for environmental action plans. Up to £5,000 is available to individual organisations. Applications should be made by 30 July and awards will be made in September. It is part of a wider £200,000 investment being made by the council on sustainable environmental improvements. Projects eligible for the grants are those that will deliver long-term benefits to the environment and amenity of local communities.

Head of roads and amenity services, Jim Smith, said: “We know how much enhancing communities matters to our residents, which is why we are making these grants available. “We are looking forward to hearing from our local community groups with their ideas about how they would like to improve their areas. “We are asking for projects that

To apply, contact Lissa Brackley at the council at lissa.brackley@ argyll-bute.gov.uk The £50,000 community fund was approved by the environment, development and infrastructure committee earlier this month. Also given the go-ahead was £100,000 to provide four additional environmental wardens. They will be focusing on enforcement and education around litter and dog fouling. They will be equipped with vehicles with CCTV cameras to help tackle the issue. They will be in post for a year to boost resources already in place. A further £50,000 will go towards other works that support tackling dog fouling and litter, including marine litter, as well as refuse collection and grounds maintenance.

Lieutenant John Reginald Noble Graham VC from Cardross has been honoured with the unveiling of a Victoria Cross paving stone 100 years after his act of gallantry in WWI. Lt Graham grew up in Darleith in Cardross and served in the 9th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Battle of Istabulat on April 22, 1917. Lt Graham was in command of a machine gun section attached to a battalion of Infantry sepoys which came under heavy fire, causing many casualties. Although twice wounded, he

West Coast Stoves & Scottish Chimneys

continued during the advance and was able, with one gun, to return fire on the enemy who were massing for a counter-attack. This gun was put out of action by the enemy’s rifle fire, and Lt Graham was wounded again. He then brought another gun into action and continued his attack on the enemy until all ammunition was used and he was severely wounded .

Commemorative VC paving stones are being laid in towns across the country to honour those who earned the Victoria Cross during the First World War. Lt Graham died in 1980 and his VC is held at the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum in Stirling. He is one of two WW1 Victoria Cross recipients from Cardross to be honoured by the installation of a memorial stone. The second, in memory of Colonel George Findlay, will be installed at the family’s home at Drumfork House in Helensburgh. The commemorative stone for Lieutenant Graham was unveiled at Cardross War Memorial by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory OBE. Rear Admiral Gregory said: “Laying this paving stone is an opportunity to remember Lieutenant Graham, and what he endured and achieved for his country.” Lt Graham’s son and other family members were also present including Lieutenant General Andrew Graham, his grandson.

Kilcreggan Clean-up

A community foreshore clean-up is being organised in Kilcreggan this month. The event is being organised by Cove and Kilcreggan Community Council. He said an old slipway could be renovated and day trippers needed more activities.

It will target the area above the pier in the centre of the village. The Lochside News website reports that last year every business in the village signed a petition calling for action on the issue from Argyll and Bute Council.

The businesses’ petition highlighted problems including overgrown vegetation, broken picnic tables and a lack of parking.

Last month community councillors backed their chairman Nick Davies’ call for a ‘self-help’ approach.

MSP Maurice Corry, who was also a councillor at that time, said up to £200,000 could be available from Argyll and Bute Council as part of ‘a mini-CHORD project’ for rural communities, but with progress on this initiative unclear councillors decided to take matters into their own hands.

All volunteers will be welcome on Saturday June 10, 10am to 2pm. Community councillor John Auld said last night: “There are lots of tourists coming and sitting on rotten benches and uncut grass.”

Volunteer Late News call for Saturday 17th Indoor Car Boot Sale Square Hermitage Academy 11am-2pm, (stall holders set gardens up from 10am) Face painting, Community Councillors in Helensburgh have called for volunteers to keep the flower beds and hedges in Colquhoun Square tidy and weeded. Argyll and Bute council say it is unable to maintain the flower beds in Colquhoun Square. They will only cut the grass and trim the hedges. No weeding, pruning or planting will be carried out. HCC say: “It is a great shame that having spent £millions on the square they can’t maintain it. It happened with Hermitage Park and it has taken volunteers to start the regeneration. The first volunteer session took place successfully last month. See Facebook Helensburgh Community Opinion and the HCC website for further sessions

JUNE 2017 – What's Up Doc?

Park project picks up pace

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: DR GOOGLE...

As part of the ongoing £3.3 million restoration and redevelopment of Helensburgh’s Hermitage Park has been undergoing a temporary closure. The children’s play park remains open with access being maintained from Victoria Road, and the Tai Chi classes in the Park continue. Friends of the Park tell us work continues at quite a pace and add that the timber from necessary tree felling has been retained and will be seasoned and used for future projects. Also several tall stumps have been left in the park and there are plans for a rope / cargo net bridge across the burn for adventurous play and it is hoped the stumps

at the boundary with Parkland School will be carved for a storytelling feature. They add: “The Tesco Bags for Life scheme has awarded the Park a grant of £5000 for a ‘wildlife hotel’ in the old horse chestnut known as the ‘Winchin’ Tree’. The tall tree stump will have bird and bat boxes and cameras will be fitted inside the bird boxes to give a live feed from the nest. The footage will be relayed to the pavilion and we hope to link local schools to the live feed.”

I know I shouldn't doctor, but..." is often what I hear prior to patients admitting they have looked online about their condition or medications. Often "Dr Google" is blamed for causing people unnecessary worry or giving misleading information about health. There may be a mixed message though, as doctors are keen for people to take responsibility for their health and "own" their conditions. Our job is to diagnose, inform and enable patients to make the decision which is right for them, where possible allowing them to weigh up their options. I like to think that the days of the

finger-wagging doctor telling the patient what they must do have moved to more "adult" conversations! The internet can be a valuable help with this, and I will often print off downloaded information sheets for patients or suggest they look at a website to help them better understand what is happening with their bodies. However, in these days of "fake news" selective use of reliable websites is key. Use www.nhsinform.scot as your first port of call and when you have real concerns remember you can discuss these with your doctor!

Local News – JUNE 2017

rosNeath games defy Cash Crisis Gathering said: “I am delighted to announce that the Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering will take place on Sunday 16th July 2017 at the Howie Memorial Park.

GAME ON: After recent uncertanty, it now looks as though the games will go ahead

Rosneath Highland Gathering one of the biggest events of the year on the Peninsula is now expected to take place after facing cancellation due to funding difficulties. Doubts were cast over its future after councillors voted to cut grant funding to almost half the level of last year. The event in 2015 was awarded £4,000 by Argyll and Bute Council, but this was cut to £3,000 in 2016 and now just £1,680. With sponsorship also reduced this year, there were fears that the event, which has been running

for nearly 40 years and attracts competitors from all over the world, might not go ahead. But organisers held a committee meeting and decided the July 16 event would go ahead – although the decision was to be reviewed at the end of May depending on sponsorship and donations. Robert MacIntyre, Chairman Rosneath Peninsula Highland

“The Gathering is a fun day out for all the family incorporating a traditional Highland Games with competitions in Solo Piping, Highland Dancing, the Highland Games Heavy Events, Track & Field Races and the Hill Race. First established in 1979, the Gathering is now into its 38th year and the Rosneath competitions have earned an international reputation, attracting competitors from around the world. “Held in the picturesque village of Rosneath on the Rosneath Peninsula, visitors can enjoy the spectacle, colour and sounds of the various competitions plus enjoy a leisurely browse of the many stalls, refreshment stands and other entertainments, or even join in some of the activities such as the family races.” Anyone who might be able to help should email the games’ secretary Evelyn Smith eveand54@ btinternet.com

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: STOP AND SEARCH The act of being stopped and searched by a police constable is a significant intrusion of anyone's personal liberty and privacy. Accordingly, a new code of conduct regulating the practice was published in January 2017. Essentially, it removes the ability for a stop and search to be carried out unless there is a statutory reason for it, even if the individual gives their consent to be searched. It also clearly sets out the guidelines for Police Scotland and makes them more accessible to the general public. They can be found online or in your local police station. Statutory powers allow a stop and

search to be carried out on a person, not already in police custody, when a constable has a reasonable suspicion they are committing, have committed or are about to commit a particular crime or are in possession of a prohibited item. The legal test, and therefore the important part, is the reasonable suspicion. The suspicion must firstly be genuine and secondly reasonable, i.e. would another reasonable person consider that there was a crime or prohibited item? In the event you are ever stopped and searched you should be provided with a receipt detailing your right to a copy of the record of the search.

Hermitage Academy is celebrating after two of their girls netball teams reached the Netball Scotland Scottish Cup Finals - with their S3 team taking the gold. The school’s S2 and S3 teams travelled to Ravenscraig in Motherwell where the S2 team reached the bronze final of the Scottish Schools Cup. The girls played a tough match and narrowly missed the gold medal against Hawick High School. Hermitage’s S3 team reached the gold final and triumphed in a nail-biting match against Perth Academy. Head Teacher at Hermitage Academy, Geoff Urie said: “I am extremely proud of the girls for the way they have played all season. To get to the Scottish Cup Final is a tremendous

achievement in itself, let alone winning the trophy. Argyll & Bute under 15 district netball squad, players mainly from local G84 Junior Netball, also won success in the inter-district trophy beating Glasgow A and B teams, Highlands, Fife, Angus, Borders, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire. Netball Scotland say: “What a great achievement for the town and area. All teams, players, coaches and volunteers should be extremely proud. Keep an eye out on the Netball Scotland Facebook page for photos of winners and runners up, and for some action shots of all the games.

rNli Cove is saved The Cove and Kilcreggan branch of the RNLI has been saved from possible closure and the fund-raising annual flower and baking show can now go ahead.

As we reported, the branch appealed for help, saying that it would have to fold unless new helpers came forward. That appeal brought in eight committee members but ideally there should be at least 12 people. Anyone interested, call Mrs Burgess on 01436 842407 or 07803 077857. This year’s flower show will be held in Cove Burgh Hall on Saturday August 12.

strim daNger to trees KNotweed CatwalK Cash for fight The bark of any tree carries nutrients and CoNtiNues rNli moisture vital to keep the tree alive and allow it to thrive. If it becomes sufficiently damaged by careless cutting or strimming then the tree dies.

That’s the warning from the Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust who are appealing to grasscutters to please avoid strimming or lawn mowing too close to the base of street trees when they are cutting road verge grass. This is the biggest single damage suffered by the new trees planted over the years by Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust and far outweighs any other damage. Best conditions for street trees is to have an area about 0.5 square metre around the base of the tree kept clear of grass so that the area does not need cut and the grass and/or weeds do not rival the young growing tree.

Rhu and Shandon Community Council say that Japanese knotweed is growing strongly again although there’s a diminution on patches which have been treated in the past two years. The Trust is keen to increase and improve the wonderful Helensburgh street trees but needs help from residents around the town to help look after the trees in their street as it is increasingly difficult to maintain all the trees with their small band of volunteers. A spokesman said:” Help us conserve, develop and showcase our unique street trees over the next many years.” www.treetrust.co.uk

It has informed Argyll and Bute Council of a particular outbreak from the foot of the Manse Burn as far as the Post Office in the centre of Rhu and commented: “Opposite the PO, the weed is growing through the seawall onto the road, as it did last year. This cannot be good for either the wall and the road, recently resurfaced. ”Would like to be assured that you monitor the treatments you make, and take some immediate action on this outbreak.”

This year’s RNLI Vanity Fair fashion show was a great success raising more than £2,600 for lifeboat funds. While the members of the Ladies RNLI Fundraising Committee and crew were busy setting up the catwalk at Helensburgh Sailing Club, the nine volunteer models were getting a glamorous makeover at Division hairdressers with VIP nails on hand to add the finishing touches. Now in its seventh year this sparkling evening is always a big hit. Terry Paterson, organiser said “We are delighted that the fashion show continues to be so popular and that so many ladies come back year after year to enjoy what has become one of the highlights in our fundraising calendar.

TOP TEAM: The team at Annaya's celebrate winning the recent awards

Annaya’s Indian has been receiving congratulations from their customers after scooping ‘Restaurant of the Year’ for the South West, along with a runner up prize for 'Team of the Year’ at the Scottish Curry Awards. Annaya’s manager, Zak, said: “To win this award is an absolutely amazing achievement for us, and we could not be more thankful to our customers and the local people for their support. “Since opening at the end of 2014, it has been a bit of rollercoaster. After a fire resulted

in the restaurant closing for six months, we had to start again completely from scratch, which wasn’t easy. “However, thanks to the truly passionate team here who have stood by every step of the way including head chef Avatar and head waiter Rocky - we made it

through to the other side. “The people of Helensburgh also continued to support us when we reopened, which we are very grateful for. He added: "I feel so blessed that the customers nominated us and that they continue to support us.

I feel that being nominated by people for two awards means we are doing something right and I am so thankful to everyone who took time to nominate us

"

The local restaurant, which specialises in authentic Indian curries, was recognised for its hard work and dedication. The staff at Helensburgh’s muchloved restaurant attended the upmarket awards ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.

Marking 10 years since the awards first started, the event served to celebrate the hard work and passion of those within the Scottish curry industry. The restaurant posted about the awards on their Facebook page and it has been well received by all their followers.

the Boat to float your tasteBuds

The Sugar Boat, the new contemporary local bistro, bar and wine shop located at 30 Colquhoun Square takes it name from the partly submerged MV Captayannis in the Firth of Clyde - and aims to become just as well known in Helensburgh. The brainchild of Will Smith – a ground-breaking restaurateur who founded the Michelinstarred London restaurants, Wild Honey in Mayfair and Soho’s Arbutus – Sugar Boat opened in May following a lengthy, back-tobrick renovation of the building. With its kitchen fitted out with the latest innovations in professional catering equipment and the interior decorated and furnished to the highest standards, Sugar Boat also has

seating on the square and a courtyard terrace. The menus at Sugar Boat reflect the commitment of the team to only use the finest, seasonal local ingredients. To complement the food, they offer a wide selection of great drinks too: with a selection of draught and bottled craft beers, fine spirits and malts, over 25 Scottish gins and creative cocktails all on offer. Sugar Boat is open from 9 o’clock each morning through until late at night: serving morning coffees, light weekend brunches, afternoon cream teas and inspired, seasonal à la carte bistro menus which showcase the best local produce.

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
