DEBATE WILL HONOUR CARDROSS SUFFRAGETTE Cardross born suffragette and activist Eunice Guthrie Murray campaigned for voting equality over many years, now 90 years after women were given the vote she is to be honoured. the few ways women could meet without men to discuss and plan.

Helensburgh Heroes will seek to invoke the spirit of Eunice and others like her, by posing the question, “Are We Equal?” at an EqualiTeas event to be held at the Heroes Centre on Friday 22nd June (writes Nick Cowie). Leading the debate will be Members of Parliament Alison Thewlis, MP Glasgow Central, and current holder of the Scottish Politician of the Year’s Best Scot at Westminster Award, and Brendan O’Hara, MP Argyll and Bute. Alison and Brendan will answer questions from the audience and present their personal views on equality, the achievements since 1928 and what issues and challenges need to be addressed. The EqualiTeas events have been designed by the UK Parliament to bring communities together to explore what equality means to people. During the campaign for the vote tea parties were hotbeds of political activism as it was one of Mobile Hairstylist

Kerry

Phil Worms, Trustee of Helensburgh Heroes told the CA: “Given Eunice’s achievements and her connections with the area, we felt it entirely appropriate that the Helensburgh area host an EqualiTea event.” Brendan O’Hara added: “This is an excellent opportunity to bring the community together to discuss the importance of equality, to celebrate the sacrifice and dedication of the women’s suffrage movement and honour the memories and legacy of remarkable activists, like Eunice, who fought to shape history.” Eunice Guthrie Murray MBE was born on the 21st January 1878 at Moore Park, Cardross, the youngest daughter of three to David Murray, a Glasgow lawyer, and Frances Porter Stoddard, the daughter of an American family living in Port Glasgow.

POLICE YOUTH GROUP FOR HELENSBURGH A Police Scotland Youth Volunteer group is coming to Helensburgh. It is hoped the group will encourage a spirit of adventure and good citizenship amongst young people. The aim is to have it up and running over the summer. As a first step, the police are enrolling adult volunteers with a passion for youth work who will play a key role in the group set-up. Police Scotland say: “The PSYV programme aims to strengthen the relationship with the police and young people, breaking down barriers and promoting positive role models. “PSYV promotes a practical way for young people to understand policing by supporting the police in their local area through volunteering. As part of this, young people are given a chance for their voice to be heard and encouraged to promote good citizenship. “The programme is open to all young people aged 13 – 17, this allows them to

get an insight into policing in Scotland and inspire individuals to participate positively within their communities. Each PSYV group is coordinated by a police officer who will either have full time PSYV duties, or complete their PSYV duties alongside other duties.“ Constable Craig Stamp, a youth engagement officer and PSYV Group Co-ordinator Helensburgh will oversee the group. The aim is, following an initial period of training, it will meet fortnightly at Hermitage Academy on a Wednesday evening, times to be confirmed. Members will then have the opportunity to volunteer at both local and national events which have previously included the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Commonwealth Games.

A fascinating new book by Helensburgh scientist Dr Pete Minting is one of the main outputs of the Great Crested Newt Detectives project in Scotland. It is called “Amazing Animals, Brilliant Science; how DNA technology is being used to help save Scotland's wildlife.” The book features several examples of how wildlife in Scotland is being helped or studied today using DNA technology including wildcats, golden eagles and pine martens. It also includes up-todate information on progress on the reintroduction of the beaver, which was extinct in Scotland for approximately 400 years.

Children from across Scotland have helped to create this colourful book, with paintings, drawings and writing entries

which were submitted to the Amazing Animals, Brilliant Science competition. The winning and highly-commended entries and several others have been included. Free printed copies are now being distributed to project participants, public libraries and schools in Scotland. The book includes a general introduction about DNA and how scientists use DNA technology to answer a huge variety of questions. Pete says: “In our Great Crested Newt Detectives project, we have been using environmental DNA sampling to discover great crested newt populations in Scotland and ensure that they are protected in future. “A lot of Helensburgh input went into the book. “I don’t use a wheelchair at the moment, however I was told by a specialist in Edinburgh that there is a good chance I will end up in one.”

Bev has launched a petition calling for changes to the traditional disabled signs which carry a wheelchair logo because, she points out, many people with disabilities do not always need to use a wheelchair.

A Kilcreggan Mum has launched a campaign highlighting the upset and humiliation often caused to people with hidden disabilities. Bev Burns says the public are often abusive to blue badge holders who show no outward sign of being disabled. Bev, who has a blue badge herself, says this happens when people who look “normal” park in disabled spaces or use disabled toilets. She regularly gets filthy looks, tutting and eye-rolling from people unaware of her disabilities caused by chronic pain.

The mum of three has now launched a Facebook page called Smiling Through with the aim of stopping people like her being abused. On it she says her campaign is getting a lot of attention and she’s given several media interviews. She says: “If people see me walking away from my car in a disabled space they think I am ‘normal’ and that I have borrowed

She said: “The wheelchair sign can be misleading and should carry an A for ‘accessible’ or ‘adapted’ – indicating it is for those who have a need for specially adapted equipment or spaces.” “They think the badge has been borrowed. Disabled people have to answer rigorous and humiliating questions when they apply for a badge so they are not going to let someone borrow it.” Bev points to the fact that there are dozens of conditions which cause “hidden disabilities”, including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, asthma, Crohn’s Disease, autism and chronic fatigue syndrome. The charity was founded on the belief that everyone is special and has the capability to be a ‘hero’ and we are really looking forward to reading about the personal nominations that the young passport holders put forward.“ More information: Emer on 01436 658921 or via email: emer.flett@argyll-bute.gov.uk

If there is one place in the world that you should experience New Year, it is Sydney. The whole city celebrates and puts on the best fireworks display you will ever see. The harbour is lined with people and there are many boats on the water, making the most of the view. If this is on your ‘Bucket List’, then I strongly advise booking early. Accommodation sells out quick as do the various dining options overlooking the harbour. If you fancy something different this year, or next, just let me know and I will be glad to make it your best Hogmanay ever. GAMES “AN INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS The Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games have become an international success story attracting visitors from 22 countries last year. Many said they certainly wanted to return as they found that the venue offered a great range of trade stalls and entertainment beside the traditional sports. Chairman Sephton MacQuire said: “There were 45 stalls last year of which very few were locally based, the majority came from the Inverness, Edinburgh or Glasgow areas. Business people too have realised it is an ideal way to raise your profile by sponsoring

events and becoming involved with a spectacle that helps put Helensburgh on the World Map. “We are again this year running, on behalf of the Scottish Highland Games Association, three championships, the British 90m track, the new Scottish 200m track and the Scottish 22lb Shot Putt. “There will be some great entertainment for the children with bouncy castle, giant slide, paintball , childrens marquee in

MINI DIGGER WITH OPERATOR

which the Magician puppeteer will entertain plus all the stalls and the beer tent. Organisers promise there will once again be all the sports events which are the major part of any Highland Games and add that young people from the area’s schools are participating. Beside the track events there will also be a hill race. There will be Youths and Novice Open Heavy events to complement the professional Heavies, always an exciting part of any Highland Games, and Highland Dancing another favourite of visitors and local people alike plus of course pipe bands. Sephton adds: “We aim again this year to give as many people as we can a great Traditional Scottish Welcome and entertaining day out including a team of 20 French Rugby Players who have already booked into a local hotel and wish to participate.“

June 2018 – Local News

Fascinating Facts CARDROSS PUPILS REAR BROWN TROUT CLEAN LOCH Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch, however did you know that it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined!

Primary five pupils from Cardross Primary School have successfully reared brown trout from eggs and released them into the River Clyde. It was part of a unique ‘Clyde in the Classroom’ project, run by the Clyde River Foundation to encourage young people to engage with nature and protect their local environment.

LONGTERM The longest pregnancy on record is 375 days (12.5 months), Amazingly, the delivered baby was only 6 pounds 15 ounces.

In addition to rearing the fish, the children used the River Clyde as a focus for learning, looking at its history, the importance of the shipbuilding industry and tourism. They also explored the course the river takes and the related geographical features. The pupils had their own classroom hatchery and were delighted that from 200 original eggs, they were able to release over 180 fish into Geilston burn, which flows into the Clyde. Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly said: “This is a wonderful project which teaches our young people about nature

and the importance of looking after the environment and encourages them to be caring, empathetic individuals. “We have young people to be proud of and want the very best for them. Imaginative projects like this one are a key part of this. Head teacher at Cardross Primary, Elspeth Davis said: “The children and their class teacher, Mr Henry, did an exceptional job rearing the fish from eggs. “It was an extremely challenging project as the correct water temperature had to be established and maintained in order for the fish to survive and grow. “This proved particularly challenging in the depth of winter but the commitment of the class shone through and we were delighted that we were able to release so many fish.

“It was a fantastic project in which to be engaged. The sense of achievement and pride the pupils had was immense as they watched their nurtured fish take to their natural environment and swim free.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERE COMES THE SUN? During the summer months, we all hope to enjoy the sunshine! There is no denying it makes people feel better when the sun is shining, and helps boost our Vitamin D levels. So how can it be harmful? The sun provides energy as heat, light and ultraviolet rays (UV). Some UV is absorbed in the atmosphere, leaving two forms, UVA and UVB which reach us. UVB rays have a greater risk of causing skin cancer; however UVA causes ageing, wrinkling and loss of elasticity in the skin, leaving damage as permanent as a tattoo. UVA also increases the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts.

Usually, UV reacts with melanin – a pigment in the skin, which defends against sun damage. Sunburn happens when the amount of UV is more than can be absorbed by the melanin, causing longterm damage. Evidence shows that frequent exposure to UV rays (including sunbeds) or sunburn in childhood can greatly increase skin cancer risk in later life. Each year 2,200 people in the UK die of skin cancer, so it pays to protect. So it’s best avoiding midday sun, use clothing, sunglasses or sunscreen to block the sun (if it appears!), and take extra care with children.

GET READY FOR AN

Summer is finally here, home or away, it’s when we recharge our batteries so we’ve been looking at ways of getting the best out of an all too short season. (writes Nick Cowie) The experts tell us you should spend longer preparing for your holiday than actually lying on a beach. Shivering in your cossie in your back garden on a sunny but deceptively cold Scottish summer day isn’t much fun. So a fake tan it is – a professional one though – no homemade horrors. In the real sun, slap

on the factor 30. Boiled lobster is not a good look and you risk skin cancer. Then there’s clothes. Cargo shorts, tee shirts especially ones emblazoned with logos or slogans and the ultimate horror of a sleeveless vest too often mark Brits out from our cool cousins in mainland Europe.

Most guys are quite happy in shorts and a tee shirt but in most places the smarter you are, the less likely you are to be categorised as a tourist. The Italians and Spaniards, in particular, tend to steer away from shorts for all occasions, especially board shorts. If you are in the city go for lightweight long trousers – also the rule in smart resort hotels. Women heading to any of Europe’s beach destinations should opt for a few simple,

A local family are now offering a substantial monetary reward for the safe return of their beloved pet cat.

with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: GUARDIANSHIPS

Vinny is a 3yr old neutered and micro chipped male Bengal cat. He has been missing from his home in Kirkmichael Road since Monday 12th March. He has never strayed before. The family contacted the Community Advertiser in an attempt to reach those in the area who may not follow social media. Susan, Vinny's owner, said ”He is a very vocal, sweet and friendly boy who can display slightly challenging behaviour at times. He is always hungry but if he eats the wrong food he will quickly become withdrawn or quiet which means he is ill and requires veterinary attention. We love and miss him very much, he is a big part of our family. We just want him home where he belongs.” If you have seen Vinny, or have any information on his whereabouts please contact the family on 07970 463 442.

Legal Matters

A guardianship order is an order made under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 which provides a person with authority to act on behalf of an adult who does not have capacity to make decisions for themselves or act on their own behalf.

is entrusted to safeguard and promote the interests of the adult in financial or welfare matters or, where appropriate, both. It is a responsible legal position and any person considering applying to become a guardian should consider their duties seriously as well as consult a solicitor for full advice.

The order is sought by way of Summary Application to the court nearest to where the adult resides. A sheriff will only grant the application if it is in the best interest of the adult to do so and there are no other appropriate remedies.

The process can be complex and the application requires to be supported by certain medical reports and also intimated on the appropriate people.

An alternative remedy may be an intervention order. This would apply if there was a one off or specific decision only to be made. A Guardian

Funding of the Guardianship Orders is based on the relevant adult's finances and Welfare Guardianships are generally not means tested at all for legal aid.

VOLUNTEER AND MAKE A NEW FRIEND

STAYING STEADY

What’s holding you back in life?

Exercise classes to help older people stay strong and steady are being promoted by the council.

HYPNOSIS CAN HELP WITH:

Charlotte Wilson, Living Well Physical activity Coordinator for the council says: “Exercises that improve muscle strength in legs, arms, back, shoulders and chest are particularly important. They can make it easier to get out of a chair, improve posture, coordination and balance. They are also an effective way to reduce the risk of falls. “We offer a range of strength and balance classes within Helensburgh and Lomond, overseen by trained exercise professionals and physiotherapists. A local charity is looking for volunteer befrienders – someone who spends a couple of hours enjoying the company of someone who is being cared for. Carers have said how much they, and the person they care for, look forward to and enjoy the befriender’s visit, some referring to them as ‘a life saver’ or ‘the best thing that’s happened to them’. John Izatt from Helensburgh and Lomond Carers said: “Befriending helps to alleviate the detrimental effects of loneliness which is an emotion we will all feel at some point in our lives. For many, it’s a feeling that may only last a moment, appearing in certain situations. Others, however, may feel lonely all or most of the time.

“Recently, we learned that the effects of loneliness and isolation can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is more damaging than obesity.” “If you are free for one or two hours a week (flexible to suit your needs), maybe you’d like to consider joining our wonderful team of befrienders.” Please call 01436 673444 for more information or pick up a Befriending leaflet from reception at the Carers Centre in Lomond Street. It would be great to hear from you.

MAGICAL FRUIT Bananas are the magical fruit, because they heal many common problems on the skin. By rubbing the peel on your skin, you can heal bruises and cuts and eliminate rashes, itching and warts. Basically if you have a common skin problem, it can be cured by this fruit.

NASTY BITES To soothe insect bites dissolve two tablets of alka seltzer into a glass of water. Then use a cloth or cotton ball to apply it to the affected area. The red will go down and most importantly, the itchiness will vanish usually in fifteen minutes.

HELP US SAVE SKATEPARK! Can you sell space? A band of Helensburgh residents dismayed at what’s seen as a major oversight in the plan for the town’s new swimming and leisure plans have gathered hundreds of names on a petition urging a rethink on one crucial detail – the need to save the skatepark.

We are looking for a positive and outgoing media tele sales professional to join our team and sell advertising in our four glossy monthly magazines.

phenomenon of scootering has now become massively popular.

The basic argument, says local woman Jackie Hood, is that here we have a perfect site for activities which can engage large numbers of 12 to 17 year-olds in a safe, outdoor environment – one which, with a much-needed facelift, could give the broader plan a valuable and in fact desirable spin-off.

A whole fun youth culture has developed around this craze, which shows no sign of abating, and with just a little imagination Helensburgh could easily have a born-again fixture to be proud of.
