Local News – March 2018
Troubled ferry saga may be at an end While for most of us the daily commute consists of a bus or train ride, for the communities on the Rosneath peninsula a reliable ferry link to Gourock is essential (writes Nick Cowie). On the town side of the Gareloch it is not widely realised that the occasions it does not run cause major disruption. Not only does it link to the trains from Gourock to Glasgow saving a fairly tortuous 15 mile journey to Helensburgh station, it is the communities argue, a lifeline. Its unreliability reached the level of a Holyrood debate and now a Kilcreggan ferry users group has been formed to keep up pressure after news that the beleaguered
service is being taken away from Clydelink. Clyde Marine are due to take back the service in July following years of problems since Strathclyde Partnership for Transport gave the contract to Clydelink in 2012. MSP Jackie Baillie, who last year organised a petition and a debate at Holyrood to highlight the ferry problems said: “There is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s what we do now that matters. Clyde Marine doesn’t start until
July – that’s quite a long time away, that’s an awful lot of ferry journeys that may or may not go well, so we need to be vigilant with the current contract.” Recently a statement from Councillor Martin Bartos, the Chair of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport that it indeed was not just socially necessary, but was a lifeline service was widely welcomed by the communities . Previously, in the face of protests about the service’s unreliability, SPT officials and members have repeatedly insisted that the only ferry service they run was ‘socially necessary’ rather than lifeline, despite the local campaign. Cllr Bartos, who does not drive, told a meeting in Cove’s
Craigrownie Church that he had been investigating unattractive train and bus options for the journey from Glasgow before being offered a lift. “I am thoughtful about something which for many on this peninsula is experienced as a lifeline service,” he said. “I use that phrase with particular interest because I watched a parliamentary debate and I noticed that that particular phrase got used in some interesting ways towards the end and I think that‘s a critical issue when it comes to what happens next.” The Community Council have called for wider local support for the ferry noting also that Rosneath Peninsula is a hidden gem in terms of tourism.

The Community Council elections take place on April 26th, with the close of nominations on March 22nd, and there’s a move to get more young people involved. Jean Cook the Secretary of Rhu and Shandon Community Council tells us:” We would like to encourage new members with an emphasis on a younger age range, to widen our age profile, whatever the result of the vote. “If a revised Scheme to allow 1618 year old to vote is approved, Argyll and Bute will be launching a campaign aimed at the new voters, and it goes without saying that we would support that campaign.” The proposed amended scheme which seeks to lower the qualifying age from 18 to 16 years old needs to be agreed with a 2/3rds majority in favour of it (which is a requirement of the legislation on amending a Scheme). Community Councils are the most local tier of statutory representation in Scotland. They bridge the gap between local
authorities and communities, and help to make public bodies aware of the opinions and needs of the communities they represent.
Many Community Councils also involve themselves in a wide range of other activities including fundraising, organising community events, undertaking environmental and educational projects and much more. There are websites and Facebook pages. Rhu and Shandon and Helensburgh pages particularly have a lot of information enabling residents to keep up to date.

Elise Nash from GDA said : “Carriage Driving coaches from Argyll RDA and Forth Valley RDA have been assisting with training. Patsy, from Argyll RDA based at Benderloch brought down her pony and competition carriage to show us what we can aim at in the future. FuNdRAISING SuCCESS: Bobbie is undergoing training to become a carriage horse
A charity dedicated to improving the lives of disabled people through horse riding has had major success in a vital fundraising effort The Gareloch branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association ( GDA) launched a bid last year to raise £70,000 to enable it to provide carriage driving riding for people whose disabilities mean they are unable to get on the back of a horse.
their base.
The carriage, which is pulled by a specially-trained horse, could well be in action by summer along with a special carriage arena at
The money has been raised through a combination of donations from the Round Table, Tesco Bags of Help fund, Lottery
The group report that it is within £10,000 of its target. One of the horses, Bobbie, is undergoing training and it is hoped that others in the stable will be able to become carriage horses too.
“She also brought a training carriage for our pony Bobbie to try out. Bobbie has driven carriages before but it is important that we reintroduce him slowly and carefully to the activity so that he is happy to do the job comfortably and safely for our RDA clients. We also need time to train up our volunteers into the art of carriage harness and driving....just a bit different from riding ! “Bobbie was an absolute star, not batting an eye at Patsy whizzing around the arena with her carriage. He was quite happy to be harnessed up to his training carriage and do a few circuits himself.”

ACTION dAyS: The action days will resume on the 3rd Thursday of every month
The very first thing the Friends of Hermitage Park did when they formed in late 2010 was to start cutting back the overgrown shrubs and start tidying up the park. Although a marked improvement could be seen by mid-2011 with overgrown paths cleared and parts of the Millig Burn not seen for some years revealed, it also became clear that the sorry state of neglect and decay that had befallen the park was not going to be resolved by a monthly action day.
Now, as we know, major work is going on thanks to the Friends accessing all sorts of funding, however part of the deal is that they also need to contribute £120,000 worth of volunteer hours. So while the multi-million pound project to renovate the Park and build new play areas and
The Friends told the CA: “Whilst the landscaping and redevelopment works are tackling all the major issues and making the park more fi t for purpose and low maintenance in the long term there will always be pruning, weeding and tidying up to do. “The Friends do a lot of things but our monthly Action Day is where we started out on this whole project and it is still an essential activity contributing to looking after the park. “ Everyone is welcome to join us and contribute a few hours towards the tally of volunteer hours. It is good to see a real difference after a couple of hours dedicated to a neglected area and many hands make light work.’ The Friends supply the equipment for the task in hand and volunteers just need to bring a pair of gardening gloves. “I look forward to seeing work progressing in the weeks ahead. Along with the footpath improvements that will be taking place on East Princes Street at the same time, this should substantially improve the appearance of the lower east of the town centre which has been impacted by fi rst the gasometer and then by a gap site.”

Hermitage site could be home for Men's Shed Scotland’s rapidly growing Men’s Shed movement is to be joined by five more, after funding from Age Scotland which will enable clubs to be opened in Northern Scotland, And the Peterhead, Aberchirder, Peterculter, Stonehaven, and Braemar sheds could soon be joined by Helensburgh, because a movement to establish one in Hermitage Park is well underway. The sheds aim to help tackle loneliness and isolation among older men, by providing somewhere to meet and socialise over activities such as woodworking, metalworking and DIY. A Men's Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where a group of men can share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Sheds provide an opportunity for all that, and it is not uncommon for retired men to be signed up by their wives, fed up with having them under their feet.” Age Scotland’s recent report, The Shed Effect, found Men’s Sheds can improve health and wellbeing especially following retirement or bereavement. Keith Robson, Age Scotland’s Charity Director, said: “Research shows that sheds improve health and wellbeing, and play a key role in combating loneliness and isolation among older men. I’d encourage anyone with spare
time to contact their local shed and see what it has to offer.” Here in Helensburgh the movement to found a shed was founded by Brian Mackay back in 2013. There is now a fully functioning board and scores of supporters. Progress is being reported on their website and Facebook page. The Board reports: “ We were invited by the Argyll and Bute Council Hermitage Park Development Officer to join the Hermitage Park Development User Group, suggesting that a Men’s Shed in the Hermitage Park would have potential for a good mutual partnership. “We have now established recognition that a Shed in the park does indeed have a significant contribution to make.” The Friends of Hermitage Park bid to win a Community Asset Transfer of the the former Hermitage council roads depot site is key. March 2018 – What's Up Doc?
fund raiseR for Pipers
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: Holiday Souvenirs...
The Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships are a highlight of the summer season. Up to 25 pipe bands, over 500 pipers and drummers will compete for a host of trophies. Competing too in the Victoria Halls will be Scotland’s top dancers for the increasingly popular Highland Dancing titles. The Opening Parade led by the chieftain and local pipe band leading a closing parade of winning pipe bands and highland dancers with their trophies is one of the top sights of summer. The event requires a major fundraising effort and the Championships Committee is holding a fundraising family ceilidh on Saturday 17 March at the Commodore Hotel, Osprey Suite, featuring Hell for Leather, the local Folk/Ceilidh Band with Highland bagpipes, bodhran,
mandolin, guitars and vocals. Opening the evening will be Helensburgh Clan Colquhoun Pipe Band giving a 20-minute performance. There’s also a display from the Margaret Rose School of Dance, Highland Dancers including the current Scottish, European and Commonwealth Champion plus the three Argyll champions. Doors open 7pm, starts 7.30pm, tickets £7, available from CH Campbell on 07710427535 and Commodore Hotel, Helensburgh. This year's Bicentenary Pipe Band Championships will be held at East King Street Park on Sunday 24th June 2018.
Having survived the winter, many of you will be looking ahead to your summer holidays and possibly booking trips to exotic places such as Blackpool or Devon! The more adventurous may even be going abroad! It’s always nice to bring back some souvenirs, but there are some which are best avoided. I am thinking about dangerous infections such as typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis or even tuberculosis, which can be a risk in certain parts of the world. The best way to avoid these things is first to make sure your normal vaccinations are up to date. You can check this with your Practice Nurse.
These would include your diphtheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid. Depending on where you are travelling you may require to pay for specific jabs such as yellow fever, TB, rabies, meningitis or encephalitis. Your Practice may provide a travel service or you could attend a travel clinic who can advise what you need depending on where and when you are travelling, the type of holiday and your age and general state of health. It is important to plan well ahead, and allow at least 8 weeks to get things organised. That way you can hopefully bring back the nice souvenirs, and avoid the nasty ones!

SuPPorT farm ParK Plan for ardardan GROUPS Local News – March 2018
The owners of Ardardan Estate, west of Cardross, say they hope their latest attraction, a family-friendly farm park, will be up and running by 2019. The Ardardan proposals went public when a planning application to expand the facility was published on Argyll and Bute Council’s website. The farm’s visitor facilities have been steadily expanding since the property was bought by its current owners, the Montgomery family, in 1997, and 50 people currently work on the estate. In a recent interview Sue Montgomery from Ardardan said: “We’ve been talking about the idea for a long time. We have a great team at Ardardan and
while some of them will be able to use their skills at the farm park we estimate we’ll need between 10 and 15 new employees at the start – and hopefully more further into the future if it’s a success.” “Highland cattle will be the basis of the farm park but we’ll have sheep, hens, pigs and horses too, all relating to what we already do as a farm.” The plans include an indooroutdoor farm park area, along with indoor play facilities, to cope with the vagaries of the Scottish weather.
The farm park will be a paid-entry attraction, though the rest of the facilities at Ardardan, including the woodland estate and farm shop, will remain free to enter as they are at present. The planning application also outlines proposed improvements to the access to Ardardan from the A814 to account for the increase in business the owners hope to generate. Ms Montgomery added: “It will take about a year to put up the new buildings which will be required and to improve access to the site. “Subject to planning approval we would like to start work on the development later this year and to open the farm park to the public in 2019.

This month: Guardianship for your ChiLd Traditionally, parents have asked family or friends to act as godparents to their child. A godparent will usually have an active role in the child’s life and are specifically chosen to take over the care of a child in the event of the parent’s death; to become their guardian. In the event you wish for this role to be taken literally then it is important that this appointment is formalised in writing.
It takes a photon 200,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface, then just a little over 8 minutes from the sun's surface to your eyeball.
This can be done by detailing your wishes in your will or, alternatively, by having a specific document drafted under S.7 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995.
An appointment of a guardian will come into effect in the event of the parent’s death and will continue until the child reaches 18. Although, between 16 and 18 the role is limited to providing guidance. A guardian is essentially a parental substitute and will have full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. There should, therefore, be serious consideration given as to who should take on that role. The role of guardian can be revoked by you if you wish and, again, this should be done in writing. A solicitor will be able to assist by drafting the necessary documents.

Plans were drawn up by local garden designer Rachel Bailey. Her brief was to create a community wildlife garden with natural play space for young children and plenty of seating areas. The community group wanted the park to become a beautiful, tranquil place for relaxation, whilst being low maintenance.
While the restoration of Hermitage Park has been hitting headlines, another local park renovation has been having its own quiet success. James Street Community Garden has, with the help of some canny fundraising, dedicated volunteers and hard work from the Community Payback team, been transformed from near dereliction to a lovely community space. All going well it is hoped to have an offi cial opening of the improved facilities at Easter Weekend which would involve an Easter Bunny and Egg Hunt for local children along with provision of soft drinks and tea or coffee for adults.
Bill Freeland the chairman of the Community Garden team tells the CA: “I am keen to up the profi le of the project which understandably attracts less publicity than the Hermitage Park Redevelopment but is nevertheless a worthwhile viable Town Centre facility. We hope to inject some life into the Community Garden and make it vibrant and of use to the Community.” The Committee mainly through their own efforts acquired
A recent award of £3,365, from Argyll and Bute Council’s Sustainable Community Initiatives Fund has allowed removal and replacement of the existing benches in the park with more durable and more user friendly curved benches. These should all be in place by Easter and will provide a more panoramic view of the park compared with the present arrangement. The existing benches are being recycled for use in Duchess Woods.
