BEER AND GIN FEST BIGGER THAN EVER The summer season gets well under way this month thanks to the Round Table who have been working hard behind the scenes planning this year’s Beer and Gin Festival. The Round Table’s Andrew Duncan said: “ Last year we raised approx £20,000 for the local community and had roughly 2000 visitors. This year we’re expanding the site to include a new Marquee over the dinghy area at the sailing club. This is to enable us to welcome a further 500 guests.” This year it’s happening on Friday May 18th from 6pm and again on Saturday 19th
from 12pm down at Helensburgh Sailing Club. The event promises to build on last year when not only was gin introduced but there was the introduction of lager, new gin cocktails and a number of updates to their app with tasting notes and a chance to vote for favourites. You can download the app via a link from the website. The team behind the event say that they believe there is an ale for everybody but as they do also believe in freedom of choice, there will be ciders and perries, prosecco, a handpicked range

of the finest Scottish gins and for the designated drivers a full range of soft drinks on offer. Andrew adds: “We’re looking to expand the bars too by having a bar in the new Marquee for lager and cider. Hopefully that will reduce congestion around the site and give the festival a better flow. Also, we’ll be providing more toilets this year to help with the extra capacity. “Gin 71 By the Sea will be returning to operate our gin bar which will have a selection of 20 different gins. The gin list is TBC but will be a wide range from well known to lesser known gins.
running between the sailing club and Helensburgh Central – it’ll be free but we kindly ask for a small donation. “Central Scotland covers band Sound Cradle and Helensburgh’s own top ceilidh band Crowded Croft will be on hand to provide the soundtrack. Lastly, we recommend coming dressed for the weather – but hopefully it’ll be blazing sunshine anyway.” Check out the Helensburgh Beer and Gin Festival website and Facebook page for all the updates ahead of the festival. www. helensburghalefest.co.uk
“We’ll have around 60 ales again this year to sample and a larger selection of ciders and lagers as they were very popular last year. There will be a regular shuttle bus

CHRISTIAN AID CONCERT After the success of last year's concert, Derek Clark, David Bruce, and the Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra are again presenting a programme to raise money for Christian Aid. Mozart's Piano Concerto Number 17 in G Major will be performed by Derek Clark with the Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra as part of the hour-long concert which will also present a string work and the premiere of a work for winds. Derek, who is Director of Music in the Helensburgh Parish Church and Head of Music at Scottish Opera, again takes on the demanding role of soloist in a work that has an emotional range from charm to riotous joy. The other works in the short concert are Benjamin Britten's youthful, entertaining 'Simple Symphony' and a
new arrangement for wind instruments by Colin Suckling of three piano pieces from Tchaikovsky's 'Seasons'. The Helensburgh Chamber Orchestra, led by Christine Sinclair and conducted by David Bruce, brings together professional and amateur players especially for these concerts. Organisers remind us that Christian Aid aim to end poverty and injustice worldwide. This involves working in partnership with local organisations, as well as with governments and the private sector. PUPILS APPEAL FOR LOST WAR NAMES Anne of Loudounville The party will leave for Messine, Belgium, on June 13. They will visit the Ypres Salient cemetery, then make their way to France to the Somme and Thiepval Memorial.

Teachers have arranged for the school to be represented at the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. History teacher Craig Gilmour told Helensburgh Heritage: “The war memorial has a strong place within the ethos of the school.
A group of 40 pupils from Hermitage Academy are taking a trip to visit the battlefields in Belgium and France this summer. And they are appealing for the help of the public to find the names of former teachers and pupils who lost their lives serving in the armed forces during the First World War. The appeal is carried on the invaluable Helensburgh Heritage web site which also carries a picture of the school’s memorial beside its main office reminding pupils of those who died in the
Great War. However, as it records, a second part which contained names has been lost over time. Now pupils hope to rediscover as many of the missing names as possible. With this year being the centenary of the Armistice which ended the war, the pupils are hoping to create a small memorial which they can place at the graves of anyone local they can find.
"The memorial is also one of the focal points for the annual remembrance service, and this year we would like to create a display of the names of the fallen. “At one time there apparently was a second part of the panel containing names, but no-one appears to know what has happened to this. Sadly it cannot be traced.” Anyone who can able to help can call 01436-672145 or to send an email, for Mr Gilmour’s attention, to enquirieshermitageacademy@ argyll-bute.gov.uk

Sometimes young people need a friend or mentor, someone to talk things through especially if there are family problems and that’s when Befrienders comes in (writes Nick Cowie). families themselves and work on a one to one basis. Project Director Cathi Bertin has been involved with Befrienders for all thirty years. She manages every aspect of the project and tells us: “Some will meet on a weekly basis, some once or twice a month. Some will pursue a hobby or an interest, some will visit the befriender's house and some will go on outings. “Befrienders is not about "treats" but more about encouraging and
Their clients may be young people who have a parent with a mental health problem, or need carer respite, perhaps the parent is alcoholic or simply in poverty. In some case the Befriender has been a key factor in preventing children going into care. Cathi adds: “ We always have more referrals than helpers and welcome more volunteers. Any age, our oldest is 82 the youngest 18. The charity is having a celebratory event on May 12 10.30 am to 3.00 pm in the Three Villages Hall, Arrochar. TUNNOCK BOOST FOR HILL HOUSE generosity have been quite humbling, as well as the many messages of support we have been receiving. In particular, I want to highlight the very generous contribution made by Tunnock’s. WELCOME BOOST: Tunnock's have donated thousands of pounds to help repairs to Hill House
Scottish baking firm Tunnock’s has donated tens of thousands of pounds to the battle to preserve the Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece Hill House. Earlier this year the National Trust for Scotland launched its biggestever single appeal to raise £1.5m to stop the damp at Hill House effectively dissolving the fabric. Now a planning application has been submitted for a giant greenhouse which will protect the building during the work, as well as provide a two-storey visitor centre. The glass box which will completely cover the house will protect the building from the
weather while allowing it to dry out. Richard Williams, the National Trust for Scotland’s general manager for Glasgow and West Scotland, said the public response to the appeal had been ‘magnificent’. “Donations are coming in constantly and taking us ever nearer to our target, though we still need as much support as we can get. “The individual examples of
“The five figure sum this great Scottish business has donated is a significant boost to our appeal and is especially apt as Tunnock’s is as much of a Scottish institution as the trust itself, and indeed was trading more than a decade before Mackintosh put draughtsman’s pen to paper to come up with iconic Hill House design. “We are delighted that Tunnock’s have chosen to be involved in what is such an important project for Scotland and has recognised that the Hill House and the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh are part of Scotland’s heritage, and must be kept alive.” He said that submitting the planning application was ‘a critical stage’ for the project. The ‘box’ will protect the building while it is rescued by conservation specialists.

Helensburgh Community Council is keen that everyone is aware of the developing momentum of the £18M Helensburgh Waterfront Development project on the pierhead. Argyll & Bute Council held dropin sessions on 30th April and another is to be held on 14th May, 11am-7pm, in Victoria Halls. The project includes the construction of a replacement leisure centre, including swimming pools, gym and dance studios, new flood defences around the perimeter of the site, raising the existing base of the pierhead by around two metres, demolition of the old swimming pool, recasting of reduced car parking space and the redevelopment of the pierhead area adjacent to Clyde Street.

Norman Muir from the Community Council said: “It is a complex project which needs to be examined in detail to ensure it meets long-term needs and aspirations during its lifespan. “It is imperative that the town takes ownership of this project to achieve an outcome that reflects a majority acceptance of this significant development.” He added that the answers to the questions at the first drop-in session indicate a fine balance on:
• the location of the leisure centre at the end of the pierhead; • sufficiency of spectators seating in the building; • the physical appearance of the building on the site. There was strong support for: • Provision of a café instead of vending machines; • A glass wall between the pool and café area; • Address the issue of insufficient parking; • No retail development along Clyde Street. The Community Council says it looks forward to seeing you at the next drop-in sessions at Victoria Halls to give your views on the project, or complete the online survey at: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ HCCWaterfront www.argyll-bute.gov. ukhelensburgh-waterfront

GUARDIAN SEARCH: Tree guardians are being sought to help preserve newly planted trees
Helensburgh’s Tree Trust which looks after and plants the town’s array of street trees is looking for volunteers to become “ Tree Guardians.” Many of the older street trees which have graced the wide grass verges of the town for the last 70 years or more are now reaching the end of their life and need to be replaced. And it was with this in mind that Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust was formed by town residents in 2002.
with other fundraising efforts has allowed the planting of around 1000 new trees.
The Trust explains: “When a new tree is planted it has an area around its base which needs to be kept free of weeds and grass. This means that the area won’t be strimmed which can damage The Trust now has more than 200 the bark – and possibly kill members who each pay an annual the tree. The Trust would like £10 subscription and this together volunteers willing to look after a
NTCS Project Officer Tom Christian said: “Urban tree collections are at last receiving more and more recognition for the extraordinary range of benefits they bring, from helping to mitigate air-pollution to positively impacting on mental health and anti-social behaviour. “This is a model that local authorities should be falling over themselves to replicate in other areas of Scotland – the town is certainly very lucky to have such a dedicated group of volunteers quietly getting on with some really important work, with longlasting benefits.” He added that the work that the Trust has done in Helensburgh over the past few years was exemplary, helping to manage an ageing urban tree population which is much loved by locals and visitors, while planning and planting for its future. www.treetrust.co.uk

DOG ETIQUETTE IN HERMITAGE PARK clean (poo free) grass without being bothered by dogs.
DOGGY ZONES: The Park will be split into zones to make the park enjoyable for all
Doggy etiquette will apply when Hermitage Park reopens with zones for on-lead, off-lead and no go areas. Damage caused by dogs during the refurbishment led the team to propose a community consultation on ‘Hermitage Park Dog Etiquette’ with proposed dog access zones. Friends of Hermitage Park Chair Fiona Baker explained: We appreciate Hermitage Park is loved by dog walkers but we need to balance the use of the park so that everyone can enjoy it.
“Accordingly there need to be some no-go areas and other areas where dogs must be on the lead. “We hope everyone will appreciate that the park is for the safe enjoyment of everyone and we will be able to work together to produce a Dog Etiquette that allows dogs and their owners to enjoy the park and ensures the fabric and planting of the park is not damaged and children are able to play and folk can sit on
The landscape works and build of the playground are progressing well at the Park and now the weather is improving construction of the pavilion is starting in earnest. However, the project team advise it is likely large parts of the park will be closed from the end of May to mid-August to allow the new grass to become established and path surfaces to be completed. The Friends say that even if the Park is largely closed for two months they would prefer it if people and dogs could respect the newly planted grass and prepared planting areas rather than have to close everything off altogether. There will be a programme of activities for people to get involved in the park over the closed period, which will be detailed in the June Community Advertiser. All constructive comments are welcome. hermitageparkmanager@argyllbute.gov.uk or Facebook at Helensburgh Hermitage Park.

ALERT ON FAKE CALLS Following an incident when a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator received a cold call purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs, advice is, don’t trust the displayed number. The caller on a spoof number stated that court proceedings were being taken regarding a Tax Debt and directed the person to press 1 on the phone keypad to speak to the Police for confirmation. Neighbourhood Watch say that victims are being told they have arrest warrants, legal writs, outstanding debts or unpaid taxes in their name. It is just one of the scams that Helensburgh and Lomond residents have been subjected to recently. Several have been called by fraudsters claiming to be from Microsoft and others received a telephone call from someone purporting to be a bailiff
enforcing a court judgement, attempting to recover funds for a non-existent debt. The fraudsters state for example that the debt originates from the victim not paying a magazine advertisement subscription. A Neighbourhood Watch spokesman said: “Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should never trust the number you see on your telephone display. If you have been a victim please contact Police on 101, Action Fraud or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous.”

May 2018 – What's Up Doc?
LIVESTOCK WORRYING What's Up Doc? VIDEO LAUNCH with Dr Nick Dunn If you're going on country walks with your dog over the summer Police Scotland have asked people to bear in mind some important safety advice. They have released a video showing the distress livestock worrying can cause and says no matter how well trained your dog, if let loose near livestock its natural instincts may kick in. It is available for viewing and sharing with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues and outlines the distress caused to sheep and consequences of allowing uncontrolled dogs near sheep and other livestock. The main points it makes are: • Be a responsible dog owner. • Keep your dog under control and on a lead if walking in the countryside, rural locations or near the edge of town and near

A dog’s natural instinct is to chase. • Livestock worrying is a crime and will be dealt with by the Police. Farmers also have a legal right to shoot dogs engaged in livestock worrying. • If you witness or have any information on a sheep or other livestock worrying incident please call Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you prefer to remain anonymous. Risks are increased by high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol. Fortunately drugs called statins are available which lessen blood vessel narrowing and blockage in the heart and the brain, by lowering cholesterol levels, and dampening inflammation in blood vessels. There has been some negative publicity surrounding these drugs, and people can be
sceptical when they are recommended. Although they can cause side effects such as muscle pains, nausea or liver or kidney problems, these are rare, with only 1 in 10,000 people likely to get a serious side-effect. There is good evidence that statins are very effective in reducing the risk of stroke and heart problems by protecting blood flow and can be a simple way to help keep you well for longer. There are five different types of statin, and your doctor can offer alternatives if you have side-effects. For the rest of us, prevention is better than cure, so look after yourself with regular exercise and a healthy diet!

Local News – January 2018
RECYCLING ON THE RISE The three weekly refuse collections are paying off says the Council, with the amount of waste going to landfill having fallen by 3% in 2017, compared with the previous year. In January 2021 a ban will be introduced by the Scottish Government on sending biodegradable waste to landfill. Officials say that it is therefore vital that we do everything we can to increase our recycling even more by then. Recently Argyll and Bute Council’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee, members heard how 18,556 tonnes of biodegradable waste went to landfill last year, compared with 20,949 tonnes in 2016 – a drop of 2.5%.
said: “These figures are extremely encouraging and I would like to thank our local communities for getting on board with us and doing their bit for the environment. This isn’t something that we can do alone – we really need people to get on side. “However, it’s important that we don’t become complacent. We need to continue our efforts to ensure our recycling rates continue to rise, and our landfill figures continue to decrease.”
Members also heard how 49.4% of waste in Argyll and Bute is now recycled, composted and recovered, compared with 46.5% in 2016. Councillor Roddy McCuish, the Council’s Policy Lead for Roads and Amenity Services,
KILCREGGAN PLANS DISCUSSED Scores of residents turned up to view ambitious plans to redevelop the centre of Kilcreggan village when they went on show last month reports the Lochside Press website. The second public consultation meeting was hailed as a success afterwards by Rosneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust. Erz Consultants put forward initial proposals which include public artwork at two locations, a promenade or boardwalk, traffic calming, a long stay car parking area and a terraced parkland or amphitheatre. Trust director Charlotte McLean said: “There was a good turnout for the public consultation day. It was really encouraging to see the level of engagement and how much time people were prepared to give to discussing the project.”

A CHILD INSTRUCT This month: CAN THEIR OWN SOLICITOR? Once you have reached the age of sixteen you are considered to be an adult and have full legal capacity to manage your own affairs. However, the Age of Legal Capacity (Scotland) Act 1991 provides that a person under the age of sixteen has legal capacity to instruct their own solicitor to represent their interests in pursuing or defending any civil proceedings, so long as they have a general understanding as to what it means to do so. It is generally accepted that a person of twelve years of age or more is of sufficient age and maturity to have such understanding.
There is no automatic presumption that a child under twelve does not have appropriate understanding and therefore a solicitor may accept instructions from a child under that age in circumstances where they are satisfied that the relevant child has the necessary maturity. Legal Aid can be made available to a child seeking to instruct a solicitor. Their financial eligibility is usually based on their parent’s financial resources. However, in the event they have a contrary position to their parents, then they may apply for Legal Aid without having to provide that information.

Local News – May 2018
KEVIN IS FIRST RECIPIENT OF BURSARY
Kevin McAleer, General Manager of Helensburgh Golf Club (centre) pictured with (left) Alastair Higgs of Rain Bird Europe and Bob Williams, Chief Executive of the Golf Club Managers’ Association.
The General Manager of Helensburgh Golf Club is taking his career to new heights after being selected as the first recipient of a professional development bursary. The bursary is provided by Rain Bird the global leaders in irrigation innovation, design and supply, in partnership with the Golf Club Managers’ Association (GCMA). Kevin McAleer began his journey along the pathway to an ASQ Level 5 Diploma in Golf Club Management in April, alongside 54 other club managers and aspiring managers from
around the UK. Launched in 2016, the Diploma is run by the GCMA in partnership with the Professional Golfers Association and the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. The golf specific qualification covers all the core skills required to manage a golf club and is undertaken in the workplace at the candidate’s own pace,
coupled with online and face to face workshops. He was one of only five applicants who made the bursary shortlist, and attended an interview day in Birmingham where he impressed the panel with his presentation on the future of the golf industry. Alastair Higgs, Rain Bird’s District Manager for Golf in the UK and Ireland said: “We are delighted to be able to give Kevin this opportunity and look forward to sharing his journey. His application and insightful presentation showed him to be a positive, progressive and handson manager. Kevin said: “ I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to embark upon a course which will not only develop my own skills and knowledge, but will also benefit Helensburgh Golf Club. I would like to thank the HGC Management Committee for their continuing support of my professional development.” Bob Williams, Chief Executive of the GCMA, said: “ Kevin was an outstanding candidate, and he shared some fascinating views on the future of the game.”

STILL GAME?: Walking Football offers a multitude of health benefits
Walking Football received national fame recently when Jack and Victor and the Still Game gang formed a team prompting the usual mayhem – and some very ungentlemanly behaviour. However when Helensburgh Football Club launches walking football sessions it is a fair bet that the games will be a little more civilised (writes Nick Cowie). In real life of course it has very specific rules that outlaw all running and allows either no contact or only minimal physical contact between players, with players briskly walking through matches. Walking Football is aimed at over 50s' but many tournaments are now catering exclusively for the

over 60s' age group. This allows people who have loved the sport all their lives to once again safely get back to playing and also introduces the sport to people who perhaps have never considered playing before. A national newspaper feature recently reported that the deceptively challenging sport hasn’t just captured the imagination of men who’d long ago hung up their boots. Paul Smith, who runs sessions in
the Scottish borders village of Newcastleton told the Telegraph: “We have guys playing who’d never kicked a ball before, we have men in their 50s and 60s playing now for the first time, others who live alone and would struggle to leave the house before.” Sports experts say that walking football offers a multitude of health benefits to older people such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke while improving blood pressure. Positive changes in postural balance, blood pressure and resting heart rate, lowered cholesterol, improved blood sugar levels, bone density and improving reactions. Studies have shown it can produce high aerobic activity with marked improvements in fat oxidation and aerobic power. But perhaps most important, benefits are felt whilst having fun, which makes people far more likely to exercise than perhaps having to just ‘exercise regularly.’ walkingfootball@ helensburghfootballclub.co.uk
