PLAN TO TAP INTO NAVY SPOUSES’ TALENT Co-working hubs are springing up in military bases across the UK, and the first to be located in a Naval stronghold is due to open in Helensburgh this spring. Military Co-Working Hubs are shared office spaces located in or near to military bases where nonserving members of the Armed Forces community living on or near those bases can go to work or study. The idea is that giving the partners of Servicemen and women a comfortable, wellequipped place to work and establishing a professional network they can tap into will make it easier for them to find jobs, start businesses, work remotely for employers or gain extra skills and qualifications in the places where the spouses are assigned.

“There are thousands of military spouses all over the country who have a wealth of experience to offer but who find it difficult to find jobs which are compatible with the nature of military life, which match their skills and expertise, and are located in the areas where the serving person is assigned.” The Hub initiative is hoping to help change all that and to unlock some of this talent. The hubs are co-operatives which are run by the members (ie. the spouses) themselves, and the project has the backing of the Ministry of Defence, which provides the building and equipment.

Navy Life magazine reports: “Modern military spouses are entrepreneurs, accountants, HR managers, lawyers, nurses, teachers, graphic designers, web designers, pretty much every occupation and industry you can think of.

The Helensburgh hub is being set up by Nicky Watt, from the community interest company Wee Scottish Lassie. Nicky who recently moved to Faslane from Plymouth said: “I left a great job in Plymouth to move up here to be with my husband, and

decided after several months of networking to establish my own business. It’s such a difficult thing to do, I’d heard about the co-working hub idea, and many of the spouses I spoke to said they would benefit from a hub, so I decided to volunteer my time and set one up here in Helensburgh.”

head of the Submarine Service, I warmly applaud the excellent work that Nicky is doing. In 2019 we will see more submarines arriving on the Clyde, and initiatives such as Nicky’s are vital in helping us to make the transition for those families who make the move into the area as smooth as possible.”

Rear Admiral John Weale, Rear Admiral Submarines, said: “As

CHANCE TO BAG A BABY BARGAIN Children rapidly outgrow their toys and clothes and new stuff is always needed - so why not sell the old and buy nearly new, say Lomond NCT. Savvy parents and parents-tobe in Helensburgh and Lomond can find top quality baby and toddlers’ clothes, toys and equipment at their Spring Sale. NCT Lomond hosts three Nearly New Sales during the year. The next is on Saturday, June 1st, 9.30-11am (9.15am entry for NCT members) at Victoria Halls, Helensburgh. Parents can get more details online from Facebook/ NCTLomond. NCT Nearly New Sales offer excellent quality used baby and children’s items including prams, high chairs, play pens, cots and more as well as maternity clothes and children’s clothes & shoes (0-10 years), toys, games, puzzles, books, DVDs and more. NCT reckon shoppers at the sale can save up to 75% on the price of most goods. Families with baby and toddler items they no longer need can ensure they go to a good home through the sale.

NCT Lomond young volunteers

Organisers add: “They’ll make some cash too as sellers keep up to 70% of the proceeds (or 85% when you volunteer at the sale). Tamara Brown-Milberg, Chair and Nearly New Sale Coordinator of NCT Lomond Branch, said: “Lomond has a small but wonderful group of regular volunteers, who ensure that the quality of the goods at our sales is excellent and shoppers can bag some real baby bargains.” “Whether you’re buying, selling or both you can be sure you’re helping to support other parents

by funding NCT’s charitable work.” Nearly New Sales are open to everyone, not just NCT members, and there are around 400 held annually in the UK. NEW VENUE FOR 'BEST WEE FEST IN THE WEST' The organisers of the Helensburgh Beer and Gin Festival have announced that their 2019 event will take place at the Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre over the weekend of May 17 and 18. Organisers Helensburgh Round Table are now busy selling advance tickets for the event, which attracts thousands of people every year and was previously based at Helensburgh Sailing Club. Festival’s Stewart Tacchi says: “Things have come a long way since 2006 when the first festival took place at Victoria Halls and by all accounts was a modest success attended by 300 - 400 patrons who enjoyed a selection of beer and local music. “Fast forward a dozen years and the 2018 event had over 2000 attendees enjoying a great selection of food, music, 40 different beers & lagers, 20 different

ciders and a selection of the best gin, rum and prosecco cocktails.” Festival Convenor, Paul Blackburn, commented: “I'm so excited about this year’s event, the venue is amazing, we are delighted to be working with the events team at Argyll and Bute Council. The festival will be bigger and better than ever with improved food and drinks offerings, plus great music. “A number of local and national businesses have really helped us to hopefully put on our best ever event. Good planning is crucial but we are confident we can deliver an even better event than last year, all we need now is some good weather.”

The council’s leader has been among those giving approval to the move for the annual knees-up. Cllr Aileen Morton said: “When attending the street food festival last summer at the Civic Centre it was clear the venue worked really well for that type of event so I’m sure it will be a great success, and is another chance for local people to see the Civic Centre in use for a community event. “ See www.helensburghalefest. co.uk or Helensburgh & District Round Table on Facebook.

WRITERS’ GROUP HOSTS SUMMER SERIES The Mackintosh Group of Writers in collaboration with Helensburgh Library is hosting a summer series of ‘An Evening with…’ to celebrate the talents of local authors. This is an opportunity to meet local authors and enjoy the wide diversity of their talents. The events will be held at the library at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month beginning in May for six months. The Group tell us: “There is no charge for attending these events and refreshments are free. The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th and will feature multi prize and awardwinning author, Robin LloydJones. Robin will take us through his literary life via some of the fifteen or so very diverse books he has had published.” On June 26th they welcome Pat McIntosh. AWARD SHORTLIST FOR SUBMARINE MUSEUM The Scottish Submarine Centre Helensburgh will hear this month how it has fared in the prestigious 'Innovation of The Year' Award in the 2019 UK National Awards for Museums and Heritage.

Run by volunteers and built on a limited budget (compared to the other shortlisted candidates) the Centre’s nomination says it, “leaves visitors surprised and delighted with its use of technology to curate the submarine in this new and exciting way.” The Centre has been shortlisted with some of the country’s biggest museums and cultural innovators for the award.

Submarine museum uses high tech imaging

Even being shortlisted against formidable opposition is a major achievement. The Scottish Submarine Centre uses state of the art immersive projection and sound in its inaugural presentation of 'X51 Stickleback' (a 1952 midget Royal Navy submarine). The use of video mapping technology and the centre’s complex projection system shows a full scale digitised version of

the inside of the submarine on the outside of the hull, making it possible to see how the submarine works. The exhibition highlights the role of high end projection for shared virtual reality experiences as well as in-room 360 and demonstrates a new way to show how heritage objects work. The Centre has been shortlisted as one of the most innovative museum displays in the UK.

ADVERTORIAL

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

The other five shortlisted projects include ’Hold the World’ The Natural History Museum in partnership with Sir David Attenborough, ‘Space Lives’ Royal Museums Greenwich, ‘China First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors’ from National Museums Liverpool, ‘ExplorAR’ from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum of Wales, and 14-18 Now for ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’. Brian Keating, the projects Founder and Trustee said: “It is a great accolade for our volunteers. Knowing we are on the same shortlist as projects whose creative talents include the likes of Sir David Attenborough and Peter Jackson is food for thought and very humbling.”

IT’S SHOWTIME AT DRYMEN! If there is one truly stand-out experience you shouldn’t miss in early summer it’s the annual Drymen Show – a truly ancient fixture which nevertheless keeps gets even better every year. Founded just after the Napoleonic Wars it’s run by the Strathendrick Agricultural Association, and is both a celebration of everything to do with prime livestock and a prestigious regional contest among experts who are among the best in the business. But it’s also a fabulous family day out, with everything on offer from games and craft stalls to live entertainment, dancing, and more – a real, traditional local spectacular which brings together

an astonishing array of talent in a “summer gala” atmosphere of fun and conviviality. It’s at the Drymen show field on Saturday, May 25, with a packed programme which begins with the judging of cattle and heavy horses at 9.30am and continues non stop through a rolling feast of brilliant attractions – the antics of the Drakes of Hazard are a mustsee, and of course so is the main parade and prizegiving at 2pm. Vintage tractors, a star quality

baking contest, fancy dress horse and rider contest and children’s fun races are also among the highlights on this year’s actionpacked show agenda. Also in the “don’t miss” category is the Loch Lomond Ukelele Orchestra, made up of 50 different local people who together make some splendid music; local Highland Dancer Carla Munn, champion Pipe Major Donald MacKenzie of MacKenzie Bagpiping and local bands Joe and the Ocajonals and Hot Ratz.

Helensburgh Savoy will be staging their annual Spring Concert, "Still Mad About Musicals", on Friday 3rd May in the Victoria Halls. As last year's concert was a complete sell out, they are repeating the format of a cabaret style evening, with table seating. Organisers say: ”There will be a great mix of songs from stage and screen musicals including Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Sunshine on Leith, Sister Act and The Greatest Showman to name but a few! Tickets are available from 1st Class on West Princes St. and on the door subject to availability, £10 (under 18s £8). Doors open at 7 for a 7.30 start.” Helensburgh Savoy has put on stage productions and concerts almost every year since the

club's founding in 1984. Over the years they’ve donated over £37,000 directly to local charities and organisations, primarily through their Sing For Your Supper charity fundraiser each February. Recently the Group raised £450 thanks to the generosity of locals who visited their ‘Craft and Coffee’ fund-raising event in the town. All the proceeds from this will be used to help meet the cost of the group’s November show, a stage production of Legally Blonde. New on and off stage talents are always welcomed. TERRIFIC TREE WORK IN HELENSBURGH Helensburgh arguably looks at its best in Spring when the many street trees bloom, but while many people believe the council looks after them, in fact it is done by volunteers. Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust was established in 2003 by local residents concerned about the loss of trees from the town’s streets. HTCT is a voluntary organisation and all planting and maintenance is undertaken by volunteers. To date over 1000 trees have been planted by the HTCT throughout the town. Recently the Argyll Countryside Trust and its trainees have been helping. HTCT use steel mesh guards to protect the trees from strimmer and mower damage and to discourage vandalism. This has been successful in reducing damage, but they also make weeding difficult. As a result, the inside of the cages

Late News Saturday 25th

had become overgrown and unsightly. HTCT has also struggled to undertake other maintenance tasks such as mulching, removal and replacement of stakes and ties, fitting of strimmer guards on trees without cages, and pruning. This is where ACT Argyll has helped. Over the past few months, ACT Argyll has undertaken many maintenance tasks to the street trees which would otherwise have been left undone, risking damage to the trees and further losses. They tell us: “Our trainees have been working on developing techniques to clear vegetation within the narrow cages without removing and dismantling them.“

A-1

ROAD SURFACING LTD

HTCT has received positive feedback from the local community, pleased to see the trees being cared for and impressed by the standard of work and the professionalism of the team. Trainee Robert Hart adds: “Working with The Helensburgh Tree Conservation Trust was an experience that was both enjoyable and invaluable. Braving the weather we learned the benefits and diversity of trees in our local area. Understanding the steps taken to replant, maintain and preserve such species as Birches and Serbian Spruce gave us an insight into the workload involved.“

ROSA BEATS 7000 TO WIN AWARD What's Up Doc? A pupil at Rhu Primary School was selected from more than 7,000 entrants to win an award in the John Byrne National Drawing Competition. P5 pupil Rosa MacLeod received her award from the renowned artist and playwright at a ceremony in Paisley’s Tannahill Centre

This month: GOOD GRIEF… When people suffer loss, such as death in the family, failed relationship or job loss, they often experience grief as a range of emotions. They may go to the doctor, worried that they are having difficulty coping, or are unwell.

John Byrne said: “This year we judged more than 7,000 entries and the level of talent and imagination was outstanding. “I’m encouraged by the standard of all the artwork submitted and I hope pupils across Scotland will continue to show us their artistic skills and love for drawing.” In partnership with Education Scotland, the competition aims to encourage young people to use their creativity and imagination through drawing. Since its launch in 2014, over 12,000 pieces of artwork have been submitted to be judged by John Byrne.

John Byrne presented Rosa MacLeod, with her award

The overall winners and runnersup all had their artwork exhibited at the Tannahill Centre in Paisley. Alan Armstrong, strategic director for Education Scotland, said:

”For years, this competition has encouraged many thousands of children to use their artistic talents to create inspiring and unique drawings. “Education Scotland is proud to support the competition and its ethos of keeping the art of drawing alive.”

at the person who has gone or others, and bargaining can take the form of “what if” questions in our minds. People are often depressed for a period of time after a loss, and this is normal. It can come with hopelessness and can last for months, but finally acceptance can allow people to get back to some normality, and while not replacing what has been lost, helps people rebuild their lives. Loss is something we all have to face at some point, so understanding the normal reactions to this can help to make sense of emotions at difficult times!

A LOCHSIDE ‘DESERT ISLAND’

18TH - 19TH

If you’ve ever dreamed of “getting away from it allâ€? – and have ÂŁ150,000 or more to spare – the perfect solution may be within reach, courtesy of property agent Galbraith. Currently on the market is Torrinch Island on Loch Lomond, “completely untouched and unspoiled for generationsâ€? and “a stunning oasis that has benefited from its own natural regenerationâ€?. So far as we know nobody has ever lived there and it’s largely covered in trees, but as a niche buy for somebody with an interest in the natural world – and that might be a wildlife or botanical organisation – it could be an interesting asset. Depending on various permissions being granted it could also serve as a base for anglers, as there are excellent fishing opportunities nearby for salmon, sea trout, brown trout

It could be a secluded landing point for anything from canoeing and kayaking to windsurfing too.

Torrinch Island lies between Creinch and Inchcailloch Island in the southern area of Loch Lomond. TOP FLORIST AT ANNUAL LUNCH

RHODODENDRONS RETURN CENTRE STAGE

Helensburgh Flower Club welcome top florist John McDonald who joins them to demonstrate at their Annual Lunch on Tuesday 14th May in the Abbotsford Hotel, Dumbarton.

Rhododendrons are enjoying something of a revival. After years of languishing at the back of shrubberies their beautiful flowers are being rediscovered by some illustrious landscapers & gardeners.

John is highly acclaimed in the world of flowers including being previously the Head Florist at Gleneagles Hotel plus his widely watched Youtube channel.

If you want to see a magnificent display of every sort of rhododendron in flower, the Scottish Rhododendron Society Annual Show is the place to go.

John successfully brought home a gold medal from the Chelsea Flower Show in 2018. As a result he is very much in demand and as he is emigrating shortly, this may be one of the last few opportunities to see him in action. Visitors would be made most welcome.Further information, Jane Davies at helensburghflowerclub@gmail.com

The best of the species can be seen at the The Scottish Rhododendron Society Annual Show which takes place at the Gibson Hall Garelochhead on Saturday 4th May from 12 noon to 4pm. WORK TO BEGIN ON ARROCHAR PONTOON Commercial & Domestic Cleaners

d ... CARPET CLEANING

d ...

Work is shortly due to start on the construction of a new pontoon and jetty on Loch Long at Arrochar following a meeting with the appointed Bridgehead contractor and members of jetty association to discuss logistics. Loch Long Jetty Association was awarded £84,000 from one of the UK’s largest charitable funders. Currently their Facebook page reports that it is working towards installation this month with lots of work going on behind the scenes. The funding enabled the charity to provide and install a pontoon and visitor moorings on Loch Long, for the use and enjoyment of Arrochar residents and visitors. The Garfield Weston Foundation which made the award commented that amazing projects involving local people who are helping their communities thrive, like the Association, are facing unprecedented demand for their

services by being proactive and innovative. Dawn Gourlay, Secretary of the Loch Long Jetty Association told the CA earlier this year: “Arrochar is situated in a beautiful location at the head of Loch Long, surrounded by the picturesque Arrochar Alps, and is located on the main trunk roads to the West of Scotland and the Western Isles. “Many private yachts and chartered vessels sail up Loch Long every year, but with no pontoon or visitor moorings they are currently unable to safely moor and come ashore, to visit the village and explore the surrounding area. By providing these facilities

it will also allow us to hold community led initiatives such as annual triathlon and raft race, which will help to enhance community spirit and benefit small businesses in the village.” The Association is extremely excited about what the future holds for the community in Arrochar and is anticipating the pontoon being on site by the end of May or beginning of June, weather dependent. It is looking forward to an official opening on Saturday, July 27.

CLUB BIDS TO ATTRACT YOUNG GOLFERS Helensburgh Golf Club is launching a major push to challenge the sport’s perceived “middle aged men” image and attract more young people into golf. The club’s starter package, in conjunction with its PGA Professional Fraser Hall is just £150. This is made up of two lessons with Fraser, ten 18 hole rounds and social membership of the club until the end of the membership year. For young golfers there are big savings on the full £866 fee. If you are 12-18 it is £127, 18-30, £423 and 30 to 40 year olds pay £642. The golf club has a superb setting above the town

The club is offering big discounts on the full fee for young players and a bargain “Get into Golf” package for beginners. General manager Joyce Burnett tells us: “I’d like to see a lot more young women and men in the club. We’re offering major fee discounts and we’ve got a great deal for beginners which includes the use of clubs. “We’re also planning introductory events such as Prosecco and Putt and G and Tee, a gin and tonic

followed by three holes of golf, all aimed at getting local people inside the club to see what a friendly place it is. “So why not join up with a friend or two. Contrary to belief, golf can fit easily with busy lifestyles. Even a few holes on a summer evening is a pleasant way to get a bit of exercise and have fun, plus there’s a great social side.”

Helensburgh Golf Club is soon to embark on a major redevelopment programme which will bring a new clubhouse, a redesigned 18 hole and new nine hole course. Current facilities include swing studio, 200 yard driving range, 100 yard short game area, putting green and attractively priced food and drink. Reciprocal deals mean members can play dozens of other courses from just £10.

May 2019 | Legal Matters

70 YEARS OF MUSICAL TREATS

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CHILDREN’S HEARING…

Soprano soloist Catrin Woodruff

Conductor Sian Winstanley

The Helensburgh Dorian Choir is celebrating its 70th anniversary year with a special Spring Concert of music from all seven decades. Their conductor, Sian Winstanley, will lead them in a programme to celebrate their 70th chosen to showcase each of the decades since the choir’s formation. Organisers say: “A special mention should be made of the arrangement of "All in the April Evening" by our founder James MacTaggart. Also included will be songs from shows like "Cats", and the films "Into the Woods", and "Wizard of Oz" as well as music by Abba, The Beatles and the jazz classic "Fly Me to the Moon". In addition it has been decided to perform the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "Trial by Jury.”

The Dorian is the oldest choir in Helensburgh having been set up in 1949 by James MacTaggart. He was a remarkable man who was blinded as the result of a childhood injury but went on to become an organist, a teacher of piano and singing and a choral conductor and arranger. At its beginning the Choir's repertoire consisted, in the main, of Scot's songs, sacred music and part-songs. Later it extended its repertoire to include classical works with accompanying musicians and soloists. Diary Date: Friday May 10th, 7.30pm, United Reform Church

In the year 2017 –2018 there were 13,240 children referred to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration (SCRA). They are the body responsible for Children’ Reporters and the Hearing, also commonly referred to as the panel, system. The main function of the Children’s Reporter is to receive referrals from others who may have concerns regarding a child or young person. The Reporter must then consider whether there is a requirement for some form of compulsory intervention and, if so, draft the grounds for referral. The Reporter may gather information from social work, school, health care providers or other relevant bodies. A hearing will then take place to allow the parents, child and any relevant persons to decide whether

they accept or deny the grounds. In the event the grounds are denied or, as is quite common, the child is too young to understand, then the grounds are referred to the local sheriff court for determination. The Reporter is responsible for progressing the court hearings on behalf of the SCRA. The grounds will either be determined to be established or not. If they are not, then that is the end of the process. In the event grounds are established then the matter is returned to the SCRA Hearing system for the next step in the process. This process can have huge significant legal consequences and it is therefore essential that people are aware that they are entitled to seek legal advice and have a representative at these hearings. Legal Aid may also be available.

POLICE MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY

• WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN • WIN •

Every year since 2006 Police Scotland’s Mountain Rescue Team (formerly Strathclyde Police) has raised money for a chosen charity in the memory of a late colleague and team member Frank Leitch who sadly passed away that year.

Over the years they have raised nearly £40,000 for The Beatson, CHAS, Crosshouse Hospital and last year the police charity COPS. This year they have chosen Erskine Hospital as the nominated charity. Over the years this has evolved from a single team member doing a series of sponsored runs to a circumnavigation of Loch Lomond, cycling, running and canoeing, called the Loch Lomond Challenge.

Dave Watson an Alexandria policeman and a member of the Police Scotland Mountain Rescue team said “Last year we changed the format to a duathlon called The Arrochar Cross. This involves a half marathon run through the

Make a Will Day Following the popularity of their ‘Make a Will Day’ held in May 2018 McArthur Stanton Solicitors are pleased to announce that this service will be available again at their Helensburgh office at 15-17 Colquhoun Street on Saturday 18th May 2019 between 9am and 12noon. If you are in the area that day, feel free to pop in and for that day only, McArthur Stanton are offering a discounted simple Will from as little as £75 + VAT. Preparing a Will is the single opportunity to make sure that your intentions and requests are known in so many matters. Who do you want to administer your estate? If you have children, who do you want to appoint as their legal guardian? What specifications, if any, do you want to make in respect of

funeral arrangements? Of course it is also the opportunity for you to make clear instructions as to how you wish your property and possessions to be dispersed. Making a Will can save your family time, stress and money in carrying out your wishes.

This year’s Arrochar Cross takes place on the 19th of May and donations can be made at either Helensburgh or Dumbarton police station or at the following JustGiving link www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ david-watson67.

STARS LINE UP AT HEAD OF RECORD FIELD FOR BABCOCK 10K SERIES Entries for the Babcock 10k Series are surging towards 1800 runners with less than a fortnight to go to the first race, the Babcock Helensburgh 10k on Thursday May 9th at 7.30pm. Meanwhile the elite field at the front end of the race is the best it has been since the inception of the series nearly forty years ago. Recently crowned Scottish CrossCountry champion, Adam Craig from Inverclyde is using the series to tune up for a big attack on his personal best for 10,000m in the ‘Night of the Pb’s’ at London’s Parliament Hill Fields, where his target is a sub 28:30 time. Craig will line up in all three races, Dumbarton follows Helensburgh on May 16th and Shettleston brings the series to a climactic conclusion on Glasgow Green, on Sunday May 26th. Craig has recruited his Scottish team mate, Luke Traynor from Giffnock North to go head to head with him in the Babcock Dumbarton 10k as they chase a time in the low 29 minute range. Traynor recently represented GB in the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhaus, Denmark and came 12th in America’s third

biggest race, the Cooper Bridge River Run in 30:11. The course record is currently 29:40 held by Eritrean international Tewelde Mengisteab from Shettleston Harriers and dates back to 2009. Meanwhile Garscube’s Katie White is busily preparing to defend her three victories of last year and recently finished sixth in the Scottish Cross-Country Championships, just behind last year’s series runner up Elspeth Curran from Kilbarchan who was fourth.

Sale’s GB international, Sonia Samuels, who lives in Loughborough will head North for the Dumbarton race with her husband Nick who is a 30:10 10k man and current European Biathlon Champion, the combined running and cycling discipline. Samuels represented Team GB in the Rio Olympic Marathon in 2016 and was fifth in the 10,000m on Australia’s Gold Coast in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Series Chair and Helensburgh

Race Director, Kevin Johnson is delighted to have so many internationals in the line up this year. “We would have to go back twenty years to the likes of the Vale’s Glen Stewart to find athletes of the current calibre featuring in the series. The Babcock 10k Series is likely to produce some of the fastest times in Scotland this year and perhaps the UK.” To enter just visit entrycentral. com.

JOANNA’S HANDCYCLE CHALLENGE Local woman Joanna Martin sustained a spinal injury in 2005 but has taken on many sporting challenges with the help of her friends since then.

Joanna cannot complete this challenge alone so cycling with her and driving a van will be good friends Lesley Serpell and Craig Dunlop. Other friends will join her along the journey cycling with her for one or two days. Former RAF Nurse Joanna Martin was selected to represent the United Kingdom in three events at the Invictus Games in Florida. Taking on indoor rowing, handcycling and discus.

Joanna Martin aims to handcycle 400 miles

Now she is about to tackle the biggest one yet, handcycling over 400 miles from Helensburgh to Cheltenham. She tells the CA: “To put this into perspective up until a few weeks ago the longest distance I had completed in a handcycle was a 13 mile half marathon.” Joanna is doing this to raise money for research into Motor Neurone Disease. Currently there

is no effective treatment for this disease. She adds: “A very close friend of mine who is Scottish but lives in Cheltenham was diagnosed with MND a year ago and already is unable to move her arms, struggles with moving her legs and is extremely breathless even just talking. It is relentless and so distressing for her and her family.”

Joanna explained sport became an integral part of her rehabilitation after a 20ft fall during a training exercise in 2005 left her paralysed from the chest down. She was stationed at RAF Leuchars at the time, has been preparing for her second tour of Iraq.

She is now an ambassador for the RAF Benevolent Fund, after the charity stepped in to help her live more independently following her injury. Joanna hopes that readers will support her and help us on the fundraising mission to fight Motor Neurone disease by visiting uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ JoannaMartin10.

LOCAL ARTIST DEPICTS HELENSBURGH SCENES

PRESSURE WASHING CLEANING & POLISHING

You will see a new exhibition of paintings on the wall of Helensburgh’s “Coffee Club” by local artist Dorothy Whitaker, B.A Fine Art (Glasgow School of Art). “Helensburgh Old and New” depicts scenes spanning over a century of life in and around the town. Those who look closely will find a theme of a proud connection to the river and the sea in many of the works. In the “fireside” painting, a mother and baby rest peacefully, but – look through the window – there is the old “Revenge” anchored in the Firth – the Navy is always present, and in the final pictures of the

Mackintosh “Hill House” wealthy children play in the garden during an idyllic summer but look to the future where Trident cruises down the water. The sedate shop frontages of the early 20th century with their proud owners posing in the doorway contrast with the bright and colourful frontages of contemporary Helensburgh – and do note the changes in dietary and cultural preferences! But eternally,

small children still feed the ducks in Colquhoun Square in a gentle painting concluding this exhibition. All in all, a Show that serves as a background to a great menu, but providing food for thought too. All works of art on display are for sale. Interested people should contact the artist direct by emailing mail@mobilerecord.co.uk or by phoning 01436 821 950.

FRIENDSHIP REALLY DOES MATTER! Visiting Friends is a local Charity offering a free volunteer befriending service to adults who might be feeling lonely or have become isolated. Manager Jayne Burnett says, “Having friends is crucial to our wellbeing and for staying connected to our community. We are always looking for volunteers as we have a long waiting list, and let’s face it, waiting is frustrating. Our Charity is growing and going from strength to strength but we can only operate because of our fantastic volunteers. Our volunteers don’t just enrich the lives of their friends and families, they know that it’s a two-way thing and that they benefit too.” Pictured at one of their regular coffee mornings is VF volunteer from Kilcreggan, Irene McPherson with Elaine Stoop. Irene volunteers with Kathleen, Elaine’s mum and Elaine says, “Irene has become a great friend! Her visits are not only wonderful for Mum’s physical and mental health, but they also
