Local News – NOVEMBER 2017
Preston’s remembranCe Journey to belgium Cardross business man Preston Fleming made a pilgrimage to his great grandfather's grave exactly 100 years after he fell in the Great War on Sept. 20 1917. Private Preston Fleming S/40399, was born in Salford, Greater Manchester in March 1893, son of Preston and Elizabeth Fleming (nee Hannah), originally of Falkirk and members of Falkirk Parish Church. His father was an iron-moulder and returned to Falkirk in 1901. He became an iron-moulder like his father. He married his girlfriend Shirley Dunn and had two children.
He enlisted with the 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1915 and was sent to the front in France in August 1916. He was wounded for the first time in October 1916. He returned home to recuperate from his wounds, returning to the front in March 1917. He fought again with Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders until he was wounded again in May with a shoulder injury. On this occasion he was not sent home. He recovered in a local hospital
and was sent back to the line, 6.30 a.m. on 20 September 1917, he was killed on the same day at 12.10 p.m. He was 24 years old. Preston tells us: “The Argyll's were part of 51 Highland Division on that day as every Battalion had been decimated. They took part in the Battle of Menin Road Ridge 20 September to 25 September 1917. That is a short way from the Mendingham Military Cemetery where he is buried. Over 5000 soldiers died on that day near Ypres/Menin Road Ridge. “It would appear Shirley never remarried, only asking his gravestone should bear Duty Nobly Done. I know my grandfather did manage to visit the grave in the late 1970's to pay
his respects to a father he never knew. Along with my daughter Carly, I visited the grave at exactly 12.10 pm on 20th September 2017, on his 100 years anniversary. “As Remembrance Day approaches, this Pilgrimage was part of my own bucket list and I hope my new grandson Preston Thomas Fleming (Aged 1) will one day too visit the grave. I have three children and four grandchildren and try to pass on how these brave men went to war to give us this country which we have today.”

Community groups across Helensburgh and Lomond have been awarded nearly £14,000 for environmental projects. Argyll and Bute Council’s Sustainable Community Initiatives Fund has awarded the one-off grants, which will receive match funding and be complete within two years. Policy lead for roads and amenity services Roddy McCuish said: “The variety and creativity of the ideas submitted to us show there’s a wealth of talent and creativity in our communities. “It’s great that residents are willing to work together to
improve their local areas, coming up with projects that will benefit their community now and into the future. “With our help, people are using their skills, knowledge and experience to enhance their areas for residents, and of course visitors, and this contributes to making Argyll and Bute a great place to live and work in, and visit. “There were lots of worthwhile projects that we were unfortunately unable to support

“The Council is responsible for the vast majority of Argyll and Bute’s road network so it’s vital we’re prepared. Only the trunk roads – A82, A85, A828 and A83 – don’t fall to us, with Bear Scotland looking after them on behalf of Transport Scotland. “We will also treat footpaths when there is heavy snow or persistent freezing conditions where resources allow, with priority given to busy shopping areas. “As always, there will be grit available in grit bins across the area so people can help their own communities by treating roads in their neighbourhood in periods of severe weather. “We remain committed to keeping Argyll and Bute moving which is why we have again put in place a robust maintenance plan to keep our roads as clear and safe as possible. The area’s roads network, excluding the trunk routes, runs to nearly 1,430 miles.

FrenCH style disPlay This year’s fireworks display on the pier courtesy of the Round Table promises a wall of colour in the French style of fireworks display The fi reworks display will be set off from the end of the Helensburgh pier. Organisers say: “Come down and enjoy a hot drink and food from the stalls and get the best view of the display from the viewing area in the car park. The display is optimised for spectators in this area.”
The Fireworks start at 19.30. This year’s display is programmed and choreographed by professional fireworks company Midnight Storm. They have promised a wall of colour in the French style of fireworks display. The display will run for approximately 20 mins.
The stalls open at 18.30. This year there are a number of stallholders at the event so advice is to come on down early and get some delicious hot food and drinks. PJ’s Kitchen will be on site with burgers and snacks, the netball girls will be back with their popular hot chocolate and they will also have some lovely hot donuts.

SPT and Sustrans have been able to produce this scheme so quickly bearing in mind the inevitable disruption to parking that the waterfront development will bring. “It is also great that we have been able to produce this additional parking space for commuters at very little cost to the council. It should significantly reduce pressure on the streets around the station. The council bought the site of the former gasometer from Scottish Gas Networks in March with money secured from a further grant application to SPT. Vehicle access to the new car park will be from Grant Street only, with pedestrian access via East Princes Street to enable people to walk quickly between the railway station and the car park. The report states: “It is estimated the construction of the new Park and Ride car park will take approximately 10 weeks. Construction will not commence prior to October 2017 and must be complete by the end of March 2018 to comply with the conditions of the grant.

Hermitage Park’s playground IS Plans for the new playground at Hermitage Park have been revealed. The Heritage Lottery Fund have allowed designers to spend over £180k on the new play area. Fiona Baker from the Friends of the Park says: “We are delighted to be able to share with you Hermitage Park’s new playground design. We will be moving the site of the play area from next to the memorial garden to the old putting green. “Our aim was to relocate it closer to our new pavilion, so parents and carers can enjoy a drink or snack whilst watching their children enjoy themselves. “We want to say a huge
thank you to all of you in the community who have provided invaluable input into the design, and especially staff and pupils at Parklands who have guided us into ensuring our playground and wider park is accessible to all of our community. We will enjoy watching our community play and grow together.“ The design aim was always to provide something different to what Helensburgh and District already has. Top of the list was
a zip wire, not just one but two battling zip wires. The hardest decision was to include a sandpit with water play station as in terms of maintenance and Health and Safety, as a sand pit adds greatly to the park’s maintenance regime. However, the Friends are looking for support from the community to help manage the sand pit, which would include daily checks and some aspects of maintenance. Contact them if you can help. The Helensburgh Play Park Association who, together with a number of groups, raised funding to replace the equipment back in 2014 have been reassured that this kit will not be scrapped.

NOVEMBER 2017 – What's Up Doc?
your story What's Up Doc? your Wellbeing with Dr Nick Dunn A new listening service has started in Helensburgh to give people the time and space to talk to someone who can help them to help themselves. Organiser Gill Simpson says: “We all experience hurt in our lives and difficult issues to deal with – sometimes it can help just to talk to someone about it. “Active listening is not counselling but it is a way of allowing someone to explore their own story with a caring listener. This can help them build their resilience to cope with their lives and improve their health and wellbeing.” The fortnightly service is run by the NHS chaplain but it is not religious. It is about providing a sensitive, non-judgemental and confidential setting to help

people find strength and comfort. Gill adds: “You can book in for yourself or organisations can refer people – you don’t need to provide any information other than a name and a contact number (just in case of the need to change the appointment due to travel issues). There are two x one hour appointments at 1pm and 2pm every second Monday (generally the first and third Monday of the month). COPD is a long term illness affecting the breathing, usually caused by the cumulative effects of smoking. The lungs are made up of tiny pockets called "alveoli" where the work of taking oxygen from the air for use within the body takes place. Smoking does two things. It destroys the walls between these pockets resulting in less alveoli, leaving people less able to get oxygen into their bodies, and also causes narrowing and blockage of tubes in the lungs due to swelling and thick mucus. With COPD normal activity feels like hard
work and people are more likely to get chest infections. Stopping smoking makes a big difference, stops it worsening, and your doctor can prescribe inhalers and medication which make a difference. More recently advances with "lung reduction surgery" and insertion of "endo-bronchial valves" have been used by chest surgeons for some to show benefit. However the best plan is to try to avoid the problem, so if you're thinking about smoking - don't ! If you already smoke make a plan to stop. If you need help consider speaking to your Practice Nurse or GP soon!
Is this your problem?

Local HELENSBURGH EYECARE team is shortlisted for national award The team at Helensburgh Eyecare in Helensburgh Argyll & Bute, has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. The Team has been announced as one of three finalists in the category of Optical team of the Year in the AOP Awards 2018, which is run by the Association of Optometrists (AOP). Owner and principal Optometrist Michelle Beavers said she was delighted to have made it to the shortlist in this category, commenting: ‘’I have always known that we have the best team, they go above and beyond to provide outstanding customer service. They take the time to find out what’s important to our patients and really enjoy getting to know people and learn about their needs – they are not just here to sell glasses, nor are we a faceless company. We pride ourselves on being up to date with the latest technology, lens types, materials and designs as well as continuously furthering our optical knowledge. It’s not all about the geeky stuff though, we fully appreciate that these days glasses are part of fashion and individual style - there must be a balance between the functionality of spectacles and looking and feeling great in them. Our team has a real talent of knowing what
suits people. Giving our patients the time, attention and assistance they need to pick something that makes them leave our practice with a smile is of utmost importance to us. And if that doesn’t do the trick we like to throw Customer Appreciation Events where the fizz flows and we really get to connect with our patients and show them how valued they are! As a small independent practice to be shortlisted for this prestigious national award is absolutely brilliant and I am so proud of my team for making this possible, behind closed doors we often refer to ourselves as the ‘’Dream Team’’, so to be recognised like this, well I just don’t have the words to describe how good it feels. Weare already planning our outfits for the awards ceremony which will be held in London in January where we will find out how we have done. To get to this point we have been assessed by a panel of 7 professionals, now it is simply all down to votes, so please, vote for us by visiting the AOP website, our Facebook page or simply pop into the practice and sign one of our paper voting forms. We really do appreciate all the support we receive, lets show them what a small town
retailer is really capable of!’’ The AOP Awards recognises the highest levels of achievement in UK optics, and saw a 75% increase in entrants this year. To accommodate its growing popularity, the Awards will again take place at leading trade event, 100% Optical in London. The Optical Team of the Year accolade celebrates an optical team who are dedicated to customer care, and who have a commitment to furthering their eye care knowledge. AOP Chief Executive, Henrietta Alderman, said: “The AOP Awards are about recognising practitioners who contribute so much to the public and profession.” Adding, “With this year seeing more unique entries than ever before, our finalists have achieved so much by getting this far.” Members of the public can cast their vote, and find out more about the Awards, by visiting www.aop.org.uk/ awardsvote before 2pm, Tuesday 12 December. Results will be announced at a black tie dinner on Sunday 28 January 2018 in London. that. However, this does not mean that it is necessarily ‘simple’ and it can be difficult to navigate without legal assistance. Should you require to raise an action, to recover money owed to you for example, you will fi rstly have to consider jurisdiction and identify the court where the action should be raised. This is usually the court nearest to where the respondent, the person owing you the money, resides. The Respondent is given the opportunity to admit liability for the claim, admit it in part, make a time to pay application or defends the action. Like any court action, the case may ultimately only be resolved by an evidential hearing.

It saw 10 teams of eight children go head to head to solve maths problems against the clock.
“Well done St Joseph’s – another competition success to add to the plethora of competition wins last session. Long may it continue.”
It included one team member running to give their answer to an organiser and collect the next question. A total of 30 questions in all had to be answered.
Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, said: “Congratulations to Emma, Lewis and St Joseph’s on their success.
“To come second, including against secondary school children, is very impressive. Our future is in good hands with bright young St Joseph’s Head Teacher Michelle minds like these. Collins said: “Everything came down to the last challenge. It’s the latest in a string of successes for St Joseph’s pupils “However, with more than 80 over the past few months, pupils from primary six to S2 Lewis and Emma’s team were out in front but they were pipped at the post to take second spot.

emotional experience. It's not all bad news though, having good social networks and friendships really helps to reduce these risks and help us recover when we do fall ill. Jayne Burnett the Co-ordinator for Visiting Friends says: “Befriending is a wonderful way of making a huge difference to someone’s life with a small gesture of kindness.
Befriending is just one way of tackling this increasing problem and from local experience we know that it really works. In Helensburgh and Lomond we have our own befriending service called Visiting Friends which matches volunteers with local elderly people, who are in need of some company and the chance to make a new friend.
“We carefully match our volunteers with their elderly friend, and both parties get so much out of it.” Visiting Friends is always looking for new volunteers: if you think you might like to be a befriender or simply want more information please call into the TSI offi ce, 14 Colquhoun Square and chat to Jayne. Or phone on 01436 671613.
The main role of the befriender is to make a short visit each week for a chat, a cuppa or maybe even a trip out to the shops. Feeling lonely is a normal human emotion and is simply a sign of wanting contact with people. It can often happen because of

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
