OPEN DAY FOR SUPERGREEN PARK PAVILION Friends of Hermitage Park are still looking forward to hosting an open day in the new Pavilion, despite a setback by vandals who caused £15,000 of damage to window sills and insulation. The pavilion completion has been delayed as a result, but is still on course to be completed over the next few weeks. The pavilion, built by local company Stewart and Shields and designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects, features a construction method called Passivhaus. This is the gold standard of green and eco-friendly building which means it will be highly economical to heat and maintain. It’s believed this is the first public building to meet the Passivhaus standard in Scotland. It will have a café, community room, kiosk and toilets. The café, which will also have an outdoor seating area, will be run by a franchisee. Mobile Hairstylist

Park to have Scotland's most eco-friendly public building
The Friends say: “We are very saddened and can’t understand why vandals would damage something that is of benefit to the whole town but remain excited to see the passivhaus pavilion nearing completion. “We are delighted it is such a green, eco-friendly building and look forward to the many opportunities the community room will offer local residents. There are already enquiries about hiring the community room for classes and events.” The Friends will be hosting an open day once the pavilion is finished for residents to view the
new building before it is brought into operation. They hope to have an exhibition explaining what work will be undertaken in the park over the remaining three years of Heritage Lottery funding and plans for the long term future of the park. The Friends add: “While work will continue into November on the new carpark and final landscaping around the pavilion as soon as we can we will announce the date of the open day. “We hope all the building and hard landscape works will be finished by Christmas and we can start 2019 with the park and

The restoration of the park followed from a remarkable campaign by The Friends of Hermitage Park, a group of residents who in late 2010, upset about the state of neglect and sad decay in the park, resolved to get on and do something about it. They have sourced funding of over £3.3 million and are putting in hundreds of hours of voluntary labour.

COULD YOU HELP A CHILD? Could you offer a child a home in a secure, loving environment? If so, Argyll and Bute Council is looking for you to come forward and apply to become a foster carer. There are currently a number of young people looking for foster carers in Argyll and Bute, either on a temporary basis while plans are made for their future, or for an extended period if they are unable to go back to their family. Policy Lead for Social Care, Councillor Kieron Green said: “There are a number of reasons why children and young people can’t remain with their own families and need to be looked after and accommodated. Unfortunately, however, we don’t have enough foster carers to provide these young people with the caring, stable environment
they deserve and we are calling on members of the public to help. “Foster carers can come from a variety of backgrounds. Your age, marital status, sexual status etc. doesn’t matter. The most important thing for us is that we match the children with people who we believe will give them love and stability. We are particularly looking for foster carers for teenagers and for sibling groups. For further information www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/socialcare-and-health/fostering or call 01546 605 517 to talk to someone.
Helensburgh and Lomond Carers SCIO received a big boost recently with a cheque for ÂŁ1000 for Young Carers from the Warrant Officers, Senior Rates and Senior NonCommissioned Officers Mess at HMS Neptune. Eileen McCrory from the Charity said: “Your kindness and generosity will assist us to continue to provide much needed support to young carers living in Helensburgh and Lomond.â€? Carers have two events coming up. The Autumn Tea Dance is on Friday 19th October 2018 at The Commodore Hotel Tickets ÂŁ3.00 each available at Lomond House, 29 Lomond Street, Helensburgh. And there is a Quiz Night at the John Logie Baird on November 8th 7.30pm-11pm. Tickets are ÂŁ3 per person, maximum team size is 6.

STARS SET TO THRILL MUSIC LOVERS M & T Helensburgh Music Society say their 39th concert season offers a superb selection of musical styles and instruments, high calibre and internationally acclaimed musicians. The opening concert of the series held at the Tower is by Timothy Ridout, first British winner of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, and Jâms Coleman (piano) Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. For November's concert they welcome back Dick Lee's ensemble, this time including Alison Affleck (vocals). Their programme will include the Helensburgh Suite, a work commissioned by HMS in 2001.

Their first concert in the New Year will be given by the Sinopia String Quartet; four, young, internationally acclaimed musicians based in Scotland. February's concert is by A4 Brass, with their unique blend of instruments: cornet, tenor and baritone horns, and euphonium. They are one of the UK's leading young Chamber ensembles.
Chair Marjory Barrington said: “We are grateful to Allen & Harris for their generous sponsorship, to Creative Scotland and Enterprise

YOUNG PEOPLE ON SUCCESSFUL PATH Argyll and Bute Council welcomed figures which show that the number of young people in the area who are on the path to sustainable employment is well above the national average.
Participation measure figures, released by Skills Development Scotland, show that 94.2% of young people in Argyll and Bute aged between 16 and 19 are currently in employment, education or training – the national average being 91.8%. This means Argyll and Bute is in the top 8 of 32 local authority areas. FRENCH HONOUR FOR VETERAN SAILOR
A. Hamilton
A veteran Royal Navy officer from Helensburgh has recently been awarded France’s highest order of merit for his valuable service during the Second World War. Ninety-five-year old Commander Harry Johnson was presented with the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur at HM Naval Base Clyde. Harry was presented with his medal by Emmanuel Cocher of the French Consul General on behalf of the President of France. The French government is currently recognising the sacrifice of British service personnel who served during the D-Day operations and around 5,000 medals have been awarded around the United Kingdom. There to witness him receiving his award were some of Harry’s family and friends, among them his daughter Lindsey and her husband Stuart who had travelled from Dunfermline to attend the ceremony.

GAS BOILERS PLUMBING BLOCKAGES Ninety-five-year old Commander Harry Johnson was presented with the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur at HM Naval Base Clyde.
Harry joined the Royal Navy at 17, receiving basic naval training at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and specialist engineering training at the Royal Naval Engineering College, Devonport. His first deployment, as a Lieutenant, was on HMS Enterprise, a Light Cruiser and the first five months were spent in working up for the forthcoming invasion and the honour conferred by the Consul General was specifically for Harry's participation in the D-Day Landings. Harry said: “I remember waking at dawn on D-Day and going on
deck to find the sea completely covered with ships and crafts of every conceivable shape, size and purpose, for as far as the eye could see and mostly heading for the beaches. “The Enterprise was allocated to ' Utah' beach in the American Sector and her first task was to soften up the beach defences and then to lay down fire ahead of the Allied advance. He continued: “It is an honour to be presented with this award, however I also think of all those who died during and since the war and feel that many of them deserve this far more than I do.

With recent productions such as Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and upcoming big screen movie Love Me To Death having been filmed in Argyll and Bute, the spotlight is on the area as a desirable location for film crews from around the world. The Policy and Resources Committee agreed to introduce a Film Location Charging Schedule for filming on council-owned locations. The new charging schedule will streamline the process of providing the film industry a flexible range of options for film productions using council assets.
with the charges representing a percentage of the production’s estimated daily local spend in Argyll and Bute. This would ensure smaller productions are not unduly impacted. Councillor Aileen Morton, Policy Lead for Economic Development, said: “Clearly Argyll and Bute is very popular with film crews from very small productions all the way
up to films that will be seen on the big screen around the world. To make us competitive with other leading industry bodies in the public and private sector, we have agreed to introduce a sensible charging schedule that ensures we are making the most of our assets for the good of our residents, as well as making sure we remain an attractive location for filming.”
The report recommended that filmmakers should be charged up to £1,260 plus VAT per day to film on council property, depending on their budget, while makers of TV shows and adverts should pay up to £660 and £600 plus VAT per day respectively. It also estimated that had the charge schedule been put in place last year, the authority would have made thousands of pounds.

CLUB OFFERS TRICKS AND A TREAT That opportunity is also available right here in Helensburgh. The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club has now restarted for the 2018-2019 season. It meets every Wednesday afternoon in the Victoria Halls at 13.00 to play some gentle, and friendly, duplicate Bridge.
One particular day, Bridge World magazine reported, a club had only one table in play, it was around noon. The four contestants were quite companionable and enjoying their game. However, at one point, one of the four, a young woman, looked at her watch and announced, “I'm sorry to have to break up this very pleasant game, but I'm getting married in half an hour.”
such a sensational game that I wouldn't mind being in jail if I had three cellmates who were decent players and who were willing to keep the game going 24 hours a day.”
The game is said to be addictive and has fans from all walks of life. American business magnate Warren Buffet said: “Bridge is
Tennis star Martina Navratilova said: “No matter where I go, I can always make new friends at the bridge table.”

James Duncan from the club tells us: “There are usually around six or seven tables and we would be very glad if some others would be able to join us. We play for about 3 to 3½ hours and stop in the middle for a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit – and the all important chat. Our standard is variable but anyone who has been playing duplicate bridge for a couple of years would be well able to cope.” The club welcomes single players, so James adds please do not feel you need to come as a couple, on most weeks they draw for partners and can guarantee that everyone who comes will have a game. If you would like more information please phone Susan Muir, secretary, on 01436 674202 or James Duncan on 01389 841 466.

This October “Go Sober for October” and “Stoptober” are being promoted to encourage people to think about alcohol and smoking. Habits can be good as well as bad, and I have heard it said that a habit can be learned within 60 days or less! These campaigns help people take the first steps to changing habits around alcohol or smoking by asking them to commit to no more than 28 days – which can be a manageable timescale to imagine.

The City of Glasgow Chorus will be giving a concert in St Michael and All Angels Church on Saturday 27th October. The concert will form part of the choir’s 35th anniversary season.

The City of Glasgow Chorus can trace its roots back to Helensburgh as its founder and conductor Graham Taylor conducted the Helensburgh Dorian Choir from 1978 to 1982 when he left to establish the New Glasgow Singers which started life with a small group of local singers
The City of Glasgow Chorus gives around ten concerts each season and has built a reputation for performing the lesser known works of mainstream composers as well as tackling the more demanding works in the repertoire. The Chorus has quite a few CD recordings

October 2018 | Activate Autumn
ACTIVATE AUTUMN... As summer turns to autumn, it can be tempting to stay home preparing for a winter of hibernation. Many walkers will be hanging up their boots, while cyclists will park their bikes in the garage until the fairer weather of spring returns. This includes families, who after a summer of quality time outdoors with the kids, might well be dreading the long, darker months of being cooped up in the house. But your plans for the autumn – and winter – could be different this year. Let’s look at the many benefits of staying active – and spending time outdoors – during the Scotland’s chillier seasons.
To start with, research shows that one of the most effective ways to avoid the winter blues, or the more debilitating SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is to include at least 30 minutes of daylight in your daily routine. This could be sitting on a park bench taking in the views, walking to the pond to feed the ducks or going for a brisk walk or a run. Exercise is also important for physical well-being and health experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as cycling or brisk
Another benefit of exercise at this time of year is maintaining social links. When the nights draw in and the temperature drops, people prefer to stay at home rather than socialise.
But there is another problem: Even when you know that you should be getting out and about and maintaining exercise, it can be hard to be motivated when it looks cold and dark outdoors.
However, if you set a date with a friend for a walk and talk, or a bike ride, and then a warming coffee or soup, this will ensure you stay in touch with others. Another way to stay in touch with people when you might feel inclined not to bother is to book to do a fitness class together, such as at a local gym, or join a craft class.
Don’t let winter put a halt to your training! The conditions are always perfect in the gym...

AND BEYOND! Planning to do activities in advance with friends or your family is one good trick. If you have a date to meet or do something with other people you are less likely to find excuses not to do so.
If you have planned ahead and the weather is inclement, simply find the right clothing – and still go. For example, a walk can be fun in the rain if you wear full waterproofs, Wellington boots and
encourage kids to splash in the puddles. Another great idea is to find a woodland, which will be more sheltered from the weather, and go for a walk. Kicking up the fallen carpet of colourful leaves in autumn will easily lift the spirits. Or how about trying a new adventure activity that is suitable for adults and children together? Parents can keep kids busy and active by booking them into school holiday camps and weekend activities. There are plenty of clubs and camps that have autumn and winter programmes.
learning something new, why not take up a new hobby yourself? Perhaps you have always wanted to sing, play a musical instrument or learn the skills of tennis or badminton? Rather than seeing the next six months as downtime, you could arrive in spring feeling invigorated, fit and fulfilled.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: JUDICIAL REVIEW Judicial review is the mechanism used to ask the court to review decisions, acts or a failure to act by a public body, such as a local authority, or other official decision making bodies.

We’d heard of the teddy bears picnic, but now very special teddies are taking over the TSI office in the Square These are Trauma Teddies. They will be given to emergency services and will be used when they are called to an incident involving children. The teddies will hopefully give a bit of comfort to the child.

TSI have passed on wool and patterns to many volunteers and they thank all who have knitted these teddies and to those who have donated wool and stuffing.
It can only be used where all other effective remedies have been investigated and there is no other remedy available. The process is fundamentally concerned with the actual legality of official decision making and the process of how a decision was reached, as opposed to the substance of the decision itself. It is also concerned with the failings of a body to act within their obligations or duties.
Essentially, this means it is an entirely different remedy to that of an appeal, which is an application to examine the merits of a decision. An application for judicial review must be made within three months of the date on which the grounds giving rise to the application first become apparent. The court does have the power to extend this to a longer period of time if it considers it appropriate to do so. Unfortunately, even following a successful action for judicial review, the decision maker may be able to make the same decision again, so long as it does so in a lawful way and following the correct process.

HELENSBURGH POPULATION SET TO GROW An area of Ministry of Defence housing in Helensburgh has been refurbished to help accommodate new families moving to the area. Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell saw the completion of 34 houses in Bannachra Drive in a development that the MoD says has moved Faslane another step closer to becoming the home of the entire UK Submarine Service.
Infrastructure Organisation with the aim of improving the lives of Royal Navy families already living in the area, and of some of the hundreds of families expected to move to the vicinity when the Base becomes the Submarine Centre of Specialisation.
Along with new housing developments at Hermitage Gate and Rhu Road Higher the area is experiencing a useful population boost increasing both the local tax and consumer base.
From 2020 HM Naval Base Clyde will host all of the Royal Navy’s hunter killer submarines and will be the future home of the Dreadnought class of nuclear deterrent submarines.
The £1.5m refurbishment was led by the MOD’s Defence
Mr Mundell said: “HM Naval Base Clyde makes a huge contribution
to the local area, providing skilled jobs, supporting the local economy and contributing to regeneration.” The upgrade work at Bannachra, which was carried out by Amey Defence Services and contractor Bells Ltd, included new roofs, windows and doors, as well as new boilers, external wall insulation and rendering of the buildings. Fencing, gates and guttering were improved, with chimneys removed and garage roofs replaced.

hacks COVE SAILING CLUB PLANS NEW FUTURE Cove Sailing Club is planning a wider future than solely sailing DIY-TASTIC and has asked for help from the community via a questionnaire. COSTUMES Keep old clothes that can be used as good pieces or parts of costumes, like worn t-shirts black pants/shorts etc. If necessary, shop at charity shops & visit a local car boot sale instead of buying retail.
fun MOVIE MASK
The club has a long tradition in Loch Long class sailing and in developing young cadet sailors through its cadet programme.
Its Facebook page says: “We want to continue to sustain, promote and develop these activities but we also recognise that not all members of the local community are keen sailors. We therefore wish to develop our activities around other water sports and encourage more water sports users to the club, as well as other community groups to use the club.” Whether it's open water swimming, kayaking, paddle
boarding, dinghy sailing or perhaps power boating, the club wants to have input on what the local community would like to be able to do or participate in at Cove Sailing Club. This will have an impact on the facilities it needs to design its new clubhouse.
To fill in this questionnaire online, a link is available via their Facebook page and on the website: covesc.org.uk
This questionnaire is designed for that purpose and the club encourages local people to take the time to complete it, either on paper or online. It will also be holding two open days on Saturday 29th September and Sunday 28th October in Cove Burgh Hall.
The club tells us: “If you would like to be kept up to date with news regarding our progress for our new clubhouse, please contact club Secretary, Sheena Edwards: sheena.e@outlook.com, or follow us on Facebook. “We're always looking for help. If you'd like to be more involved, the club is open all year round from 8pm on a Friday night – pop in for a chat and a drink.”
Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask.

in The Post on November 29 as the publisher and editor respectively of the Washington Post as it is embroiled in controversy surrounding the Vietnam war in 1971. FUNDRAISING BOOST FOR LOCAL BOWLING CLUB IN HELENSBURGH FROM TAYLOR WIMPEY As part of its ongoing commitment to working in partnership with local communities, Taylor Wimpey West Scotland has recently donated £500 to Colgrain Bowling Club in Helensburgh. The money will provide a boost to its fundraising towards repairing the clubhouse roof, which will help to make sure they can continue to offer their valuable support to the local community. Colgrain Bowling Club has played a key role in the local Helensburgh community for 67 years and it supports a variety of local initiatives that bring old and young together. Their packed programme includes work with Enable Scotland, support for Ardencaple Boys Club, as well as an outreach programme with Helensburgh Academy to provide taster sessions of lawn bowls and bust the myth that the sport is just for old people. Taylor Wimpey’s donation marks a key milestone for its local development at Hermitage Grange development in Helensburgh, where two show
homes have recently opened to provide buyers with the perfect opportunity to see for themselves just how stylish their move to the local area could be. Commenting on the support it has received from Taylor Wimpey, Scott Moorhouse from Colgrain Bowling Club said: “We are extremely grateful for the support that we have received from Taylor Wimpey and we can’t thank them enough for their generous donation. Our club plays an integral role in the local community by bringing together young and old to embrace in the sport of lawn bowls.
