Local News – SEPTEMBER 2017

Cancer fundraiser aims to be UK’s best cancer and in support of those still fighting. We raised a further £3500 which is amazing considering this started off as an idea from two boys and we are confident we will take our fundraising total to at least £10,000.” Other fundraising events include on Sunday 24th Sept the first ever SU2C Festival at the Helensburgh Rugby and Cricket Club from 12pm onwards.

The Cancer Research UK Shop in Helensburgh has a tremendous lineup for this year's Stand Up To Cancer campaign (ST2C), which runs throughout September and October The team raised £10,257 in their two month campaign last year and came fourth in the UK out of over 600 CRUK shops. Alison Sturgeon, Assistant Manager tells us they aim to beat that this year with a jam packed programme of fundraising events. One of the top events is the “Grannies Challenge,” on September 3, a sponsored

childrens’ bike ride, which is organised by volunteer Donna Hicks and has raised £8,000 over the last three campaigns. Donna said: “My mother, Nancy Straton died from cancer in November '14 and my sons really struggled to cope with losing their gran. At the time Ollie was 9 and Conor was 7. They decided to do something positive

in her memory and decided on a sponsored cycle. “We initially hoped to raise maybe £200 or £300. I posted on Facebook the boys’ idea and was genuinely overwhelmed when around 20 other kids and their parents wanted to be involved. The event, then called the Three Grannies’ Challenge, was in memory of my mother, my mother-in-law Eileen Owen and my aunt Margaret Ellis, who all died from cancer. “ Last year we renamed it the Grannies Challenge in memory of all grandparents lost to

Alison says : ”We are a tiny team of two staff and a handful of volunteers but we are passionate about our fundraising and we live to put our shop and our town, firmly in the spotlight. We have live music provided by SheBoom and the Helensburgh Rock Choir. The Animal Man Mini Zoo, an inflatable assault course, Drakes of Hazard, sumo suits, kids races and games, BBQ, stalls and more. Entry fee will be £5 for adults and £3.50 kids, under 3s free.” On Saturday September 9 there is a Take That tribute ladies night at the Commodore Hotel and more events in October which will feature in our next edition.

The theme of Volunteers Week this year was ‘Volunteers are the Golden Thread that connect our Communities’ and this is certainly true in Helensburgh. Helensburgh and Lomond Carers agree: “ We rely on the kindness of volunteers to help us deliver many of the services which help make a positive difference to the lives of unpaid carers. “ We are looking for volunteers to enhance our team of befrienders who are currently enriching the lives of carers and the people they care for. “An example of the type of issue where we would offer support

is where a carer who, as a result of their dedication to caring, rarely socialises, becomes isolated, possibly starts to lose their social skills and eventually could become less able to interact with others. “This can create a vicious circle where the carer becomes more isolated and less confident or capable of participating in social activity.” For a couple of hours a week,

siona's our Commonwealth hopeful Anne of Loudounville Helensburgh power lifter Siona Garden is “absolutely delighted” to have been selected to join Team Scotland at the forthcoming Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships.

back since.

It takes place at Potchefstroom in the North West of South Africa from 10 - 17 September.

Siona, a mum of three little girls has been raising money for the trip. Costs involved are for things like fl ights, accommodation, training costs, equipment, physio, airport transfers, entrance fees, drug testing fees to name just a few.

“I was hoping that I would be selected, but when the news finally came through I was floored by the enormity of it. “I kind of sat there stunned, I just quietly turned to my husband Trevor and said "I have just been selected to join team Scotland in South Africa" it took a good few minutes to sink in.”

Siona currently holds the Scottish Masters one records in Backsquat, Bench and Deadlift as well as holding several titles in the sport of Powerlifting. She tells us: “ I started weight lifting to get fitter and stronger as the demands of my profession are very physical (I own a cafe and roast hogs for a living!) And discovered not only that I loved it but that I was actually quite good at it. “We started comparing the numbers I was lifting with results from competitions and

Siona pictured in competition during the back squat

realised that my numbers were competitive, so I started training with a purpose and the intention to compete and I haven't looked

She said: “The trip is self funded, and taking into consideration numerous factors like fl ights, transfers, equipment, additional childcare costs, training costs, accommodation to name but a few I reckon the overall end cost is going to be around three thousand pounds.” If you want to help see https://www.gofundme.com/ sionagarden

It later became the estate of the Muir family and was acquired by the Royal Northern Yacht Club as its clubhouse in 1937 and remains the headquarters. Much of the internal architectural details remain and many historic club artefacts are displayed in the grand rooms. Writing can be a solitary pastime, so it's quite a relief to meet up with like-minded people to discuss your work or just enjoy the company. The Helensburgh Writing Circle meet in Rhu & Shandon Community Hall each Friday afternoon for tea, biscuits, help and advice. Jean Murray, secretary, said: “Some weeks we read out our work - others we write on the day giving ideas for further writing. Hello, my name is Amy Robertson and some of you may already know me as a former pupil and Assistant Dance Teacher at Ian McLeod’s Theatre School in Helensburgh. Since starting my dancewear delivery service, ’TwinkleToes to go’, I realised the necessity for a dancewear shop in Helensburgh as Morrison Sports is sadly closing after so many years. I want to say a HUGE thank you to Margaret for all the help and support she has given me while starting my business and also for the service she has provided over the past 30 years, supplying dancewear for all the local dance schools! We will be opening the doors to our shop called ‘Buttercup Moon’ on Tuesday the 26th of September! The shop will provide dance uniforms and

accessories for children and adults as well as a selection of Baby and Childrenswear. We are also the new official stockist of uniforms for the Brownies, Rainbows, Beavers etc. In the meantime just call 07469208929 or email amy@twinkletoestogo.com to make an appointment to have dancewear delivered straight to your door! Helensburgh Oratorio Choir rehearsals resume for the new season this month in Helensburgh Parish Church Halls, with charismatic musical director Jonathon Swinard. The winter 2017 concert is 'Sound the Trumpet, Beat the Drums', Bach Cantata 214 'Tönet ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trumpeten' and Haydn 'Paukenmesse' (Mass in Time of War), and the spring 2018 concert will be Mendelssohn's 'Elijah'. Conductor and pianist Jonathon Swinard studied at St. Catherine's College Oxford where he held the New Chamber Opera Repetiteur Scholarship, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. From 2014-2016 he was engaged as Solorepetitor at the Staatstheater Nurnberg, where he conducted and played a vast range of operatic repertoire in rehearsal and concert.

Irene Wotherspoon from the Oratorio says: “ Rehearsals begin 7.30 Tuesday 5th September. New singers welcome, especially tenors and basses. Joining the Helensburgh Oratorio Choir is a fantastic way to sing wonderful music and meet new people. “We perform with a professional orchestra and soloists, singing a wide range of music covering over 400 years of composition. The choir provides its members with the opportunity to improve their singing skills through professionally-run workshops as well as providing a chance to enhance the cultural life of the local community.” www.helensburghoratorio.co.uk.

Tartan Harmony, a local ladies acapella group is welcoming new members this summer. Tartan Harmony has been singing together since 2009. Adrienne Spy from the group tells us: “ We mostly sing locally, and think of ourselves as a community choir, but we're not averse to travelling either, with trips to Ireland and the Glasgow City chambers amongst our most recent 'singouts'. “We've even performed at the King's Theatre as part of the Dolly Parton musical '9 to 5' event. We sing a wide mixture of songs, from barbershop to Queen.

Adrienne adds: “We hold an open rehearsal policy, Our chorus members are fun-loving and dedicated ladies who work together to deliver a consistently high standard of entertainment. Volunteers help to enhanCe parK Late News the names will again be crisp and clear. Friend of the Park Fiona Baker says: “The playground designs are just being finalised now and it looks very exciting. Our consultation group includes, 3, 6 and 10 year olds and we are grateful for extra input on suitable equipment for disabled children. Volunteers have helped to create a new drystone wall as part of the park resoration.

A beautiful stretch of new drystone wall built by the West of Scotland Drystone Walling Association and volunteers led by Norman Muir features in the Hermitage Park restoration. Almost all of the major drainage works have now been completed and the new paths laid out. The original path edges were made up of stones from the demolished house and mill, these stones have been stockpiled and are being used elsewhere in the park. including in the new drystone wall and in repairs to

The restoration of the War Memorial and Memorial Garden is progressing well and it is expected scaffolding will go up on the memorial itself in the next few weeks for the repair and conservation works there. This will include re-cutting the badly weathered lettering so all

“ We hope to include two parallel 30m long zip-wires, a sand and water feature so children can make sand castles and sculptures, trampolines including one for wheelchair users and lots of marvellous new equipment in addition to relocating the equipment from the existing playpark.” “During the temporary closure of the park the Japanese shelter was removed and the pavilion has finally been demolished. We have recycled as much as possible from these structures and we sent approximately 6 tonnes of metal and 104 cubic metres of wood to recycling and things such as the old water tank will be re-purposed as a water butt in the Demonstration Garden.”

rnli honour fundraiser wendy The RNLI Helensburgh Fundraising Committee held a small tea party recently in honour of Wendy Lightoller. She has been awarded a certiďŹ cate for Excellence in Volunteering. Wendy joined the RNLI Helensburgh Fundraising Committee in 1990 and has organised Flag Day since 1998. Her organisational skills have raised significant funds for the RNLI over the past 19 years. The RNLI Press officer said: “The RNLI Fundraising Teams are the often unsung lifeboat volunteers. They work throughout the year holding fundraising events and rattling collecting boxes on Lifeboat Day. Their tireless efforts are not always noticed by the public but they make a vital contribution to saving lives at sea. “The Helensburgh Lifeboat

All Lifeboat crew members are trained to an extremely high standard, and training at Helensburgh has always been taken seriously, to ensure that every member of the Helensburgh Lifeboat crew is fully prepared for responding to any emergency at sea. The RNLI can arrange visits for individuals and groups of all ages, and endeavour to tailor the experience to suit the group. affects about 1000 people per year and about 600 require hospital admission with complications of shingles.

Every year about 7,000 people in Scotland get shingles. It’s caused by a virus called Varicella Zoster, which causes chickenpox, but after recovery some virus survives and lies inactive in your body’s nervous system. If it later re-activates to cause shingles, it passes down a nerve to cause painful blisters on the skin, so the rash is contained within a “band on one side of the body.

If your immune system has been weakened by age, stress, illness or certain medicines you are at more risk of developing shingles. The shingles vaccine protects by boosting immunity and is available to those most at risk, people aged 70 or more. It reduces the risk of shingles by about a third and it will be less severe even if you are affected.

GPs prescribe antiviral drugs, if caught within 3 days or sometimes a week of the rash appearing. These limit the spread of the rash and reduces the risk of “post-herpetic neuralgia – pain after the rash which can last up to a year. This pain

A potential saving of several hundred pounds and NO initial cost

As a first time seller I would have struggled to find the required money for the Home Report but with the package on offer I was able to market straight away and managed to sell within only one week and achieved over the Home Report valuation. (West Princes Street)

This had been our family home for decades and we had not been used to buying and selling however Property Bureau have sold most of the homes in this area over the last few years and they were recommended by another neighbour they sold for. We sold within three weeks for over our asking price. (Craigendoran)

Having sold several properties over the years we recognised this is an excellent way of helping with sales costs. We must have saved over £500 in marketing costs and Property Bureau achieved a sale price which was over our expectations. (East Clyde Street)

I had seen a property I liked and the thought of being able to market the flat with no initial costs was appealing. Property Bureau got my flat on the market within 24 hours of instruction and sold within one week which meant I managed to buy the property I wanted. Excellent service and would use again (East Princes Street)

This month: MEDIATION Mediation is rapidly increasing in popularity as an alternative to disputes resolution through litigation. Although court action can sometimes be unavoidable in certain circumstances, it can also be stressful, lengthy and expensive. Mediation is a flexible process that uses a third, independent party to help both sides come to an agreement themselves. The mediator does not represent either party and should not be judgmental or provide legal advice. The purpose is to allow you to find your own solution. Mediation is entirely confidential and operates on a without prejudice basis. This means that, should matters not be resolved, anything discussed

should not later be used in any future court action. Mediation can be utilised in any number of circumstances, including contract disputes, neighbour disputes or family matters. It is a voluntary process and will only take place if both parties agree to participate. (Although, there is such a thing as court appointed mediation). The reason for this is that it is recognised that mediation will only be successful if the parties come together willingly and with an open mind. If you are experiencing conflict with someone you may wish to speak to your solicitor for further information and investigate whether mediation would be appropriate for your situation.

RECORD ENTRY FOR 10K

The Arrochar 10K race is being staged for the second time this month. 150 runners are expected to take part on a multi-terrain scenic route. Dawn Gourlay, Event Administrator says: “It has one significant hill on the course. We limited entries last year to 120 and this year increased it to 150 - this number however will never be exceeded as part of the run necessitates crossing the A83. The entries are all taken for this year and we have a waiting list. “ The race is on Saturday 16th September and it starts at 10.30am. The runners are all invited back to the Three Villages Hall for free coffee and cake - the prize giving also takes place in the hall - anticipated about

12 noon. Dawn adds: “We have great community involvement, last year we had help from the local GP surgery, the scouts, cadets, camera club, mountain rescue, 3V hall coffee morning group and many local and not so local volunteers to marshal - all in all it was a great day. The sun shone which also helped. “We were able to give small donations to some of the groups that helped us and hope to be able to do the same again this year.”

The first phase of a longawaited path between Rosneath and the caravan park is set to go ahead thanks to funding worth £250,000. There has been concern for many years over safety on the stretch of the B833 between the village and Rosneath Castle Caravan Park, which is often used by visitors and locals who have to dodge oncoming traffic. Now funding from Sustrans Community Links programme, aimed at creating a cycle network infrastructure for everyday journeys, will see Argyll and Bute Council build the first phase of a new shared use path for walkers and cyclists which it is hoped will encourage more people to take exercise on daily trips.

Helensburgh Rugby Club is looking forward to the coming season and officials says that there’s a “positive feeling” for the upcoming year. Pre-season training is underway with good numbers attending with a new coaching team, new club captain Liam Flanagan and Vice Captain Connor Slader and a new and fast flowing way of playing it should be an exciting time at Ardencaple. In a recent statement the club said: “Liam epitomises all that we are looking for at Helensburgh. He has the respect of all the players, supporters and club members. His commitment to the club has never been in doubt and will do anything to help the club or fellow club members.” Head coach David Calderwood has been impressed with the commitment of the players so far, as the Ardencaple side look to bounce back after a poor season last year which saw them pick up just one win. He said in a recent interview: “There’s a lot more fitness involved, there’s been lots more

circuits and running. Hopefully their base fitness will be higher which will allow us to work more on the technical side of things. I don’t see why we can’t finish in the top half of the league. I know the teams we played against last year and the new teams that have come in” Stuart Ashdown from the Club said:” We are looking forward to our first home game on the 9th of September against Stewartry and the 23rd of September against Cambuslang kick off for both games is 3pm so come along and support your local team.” The club’s main sponsor is Silvers Marine, but there are other sponsorship opportunities for players or match balls and home games.”

Lomondside hotel Cameron House wins accolades of one sort or another on an almost routine basis, but this year the honours were really special. The luxury destination attraction (and Michelin-starred restaurant. Spa, etc) won two particularly excellent titles at the recent Scottish Hospitality Awards – general manager of the year, and romantic hotel of the year. That is something like a dream ticket for any hotel, as it confirms both the efficiency of what is obviously a very complex organisation, and at the same time recognises the allure of the place from a customer’s point of view. The promotional material for Cameron House Hotel extols excellent service, refined elegance, and – in a flight of gastronomic hyperbole – “a symphony of flavours” in the restaurant.

Now the shimmering prose can focus even more closely on the hotel as a deluxe wedding and other special occasions venue. The hotel describes itself as a place “where glamour and romanticism meet culture and history”, and when a top national award scheme comes to pretty much the same conclusion it has to be good for business. With Lomondside leisure amenities becoming ever more diverse, this is one enterprise which seems determined to keep its iconic position in a notoriously competitive high end market – and being officially the most romantic in the country is great news.

Nautical theme Ale Fest The Cove Real Ale Festival has a nautical theme this year - so organisers invite you to push the boat out. The team behind the event say: “As always, we will have a great range of ales and ciders, home cooked food and live music, somewhere to park the children and hopefully, after last year's storm, we will have better weather.” The theme of this year's Festival will feature ales and breweries with a shipbuilding or nautical twist. The Festival takes place on Saturday 23rd September, organised and staffed by locals, it is the major fund-raising event for the community-run Burgh Hall and attracts visitors from all over the country. Buses from Helensburgh run to the hall every half hour.

melanie’s sweet taste of suCCess Business Gateway has helped 104 fledgling companies start up in Argyll and Bute, and supported nearly 1,000 existing businesses many in Helensburgh and Lomond.

It’s part of a year of success for Business Gateway , which supports local firms. One of those helped was a former Army medic who formed her own chocolate business and is seeing her products go down a treat. Melanie Neil, who is based in Helensburgh, launched CocoaMo in 2014 with support from Business Gateway, creating artisan chocolates using local and organic ingredients and single origin cocoa. She said: “I was keen to make Business Gateway my first stop before I launched CocoaMo, as I had no previous business experience. My adviser was a wealth of information, providing me with details from accounting to food standards contacts. This help, along with everything I learned from attending the free courses Business Gateway host, has been invaluable to me and CocoaMo’s growth.” Melanie has continued

to benefit from support and in 2016 was a winner in the Business Gateway competition to secure a trade stand at the Best of the West festival.

d ...

After taking early retirement from her position as a medical professional with the Army, Melanie, a keen baker, wanted to master the techniques of a professional chocolatier. She began working on her first collection after taking an intensive chocolate Master Chef course.

we're in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
