SHOP BIDS TO BECOME TOP FUNDRAISER

The Helensburgh Cancer Research shop was the UK’s top Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser last year and it hopes to repeat that success in 2018. The fundraising effort is headlined by the Stand Up To Cancer Family Festival on Sunday September 16. Alison Sturgeon and the team from the shop tell us: “Last year’s festival was our first and raised nearly £3,000 despite dreadful weather. We are hoping for a dry day and a great turnout this year. We are currently looking for stall holders, volunteers , donations of baking and raffle prizes.” The Festival features a host of talent including local bands Hot Ratz, Cloud of Starlings and Crowded Croft , Louis Paige from Voice Kids and many other attractions like the Drakes of

There’s also a mini zoo, inflatable assault course and a stilt walking juggler. The second big event in the SU2C Campaign is the Abba tribute Ladies night on Saturday 29 September seven till midnight .

Alison adds: “SU2C raises money for Translational Research, which turns clinical trials into treatments for cancer patients.

This follows the huge success of the Take This Ladies Night last year, which sold out in three days and raised £2,500.

“Our Helensburgh CRUK shop raised £14,829 in our two month SU2C campaign last year , with the help of the Helensburgh and Lomond community who supported our events tremendously.

Hillwalkers have criticised Argyll and Bute Council plans for a jump in parking charges at one of Scotland’s most popular mountains. And there are fears that the price hike could be repeated in Helensburgh’s car parks – although the council says there are “no plans at the moment.” The council proposes a rise from £1 to £9 a day for two car parks at Arrochar, the starting point for climbing The Cobbler, one of the best-known Scottish hills, and the Arrochar Alps group of Munros.

Helen Todd, campaigns manager for Ramblers Scotland, said: “We aren’t opposed to modest charges at Scotland’s most popular car parks, when it is clear that all money raised will be invested in much-needed facilities like paths, signage and toilets.” Davie Black of Mountaineering Scotland said: “Our members are used to seeing daily charges of £3-

£4 for parking in popular walking locations, such as at Glen Nevis and at Forest Enterprise sites. “We regard this as a reasonable cost. However, high car parking charges can create a barrier to those wishing to exercise their right of access to the countryside, particularly those with lower incomes. “This is all happening at a time when Scottish government policies are firmly committed to promotion of outdoor recreation for health and social wellbeing benefits. “The huge increase from £1 to £9 that Argyll and Bute Council intends to impose targets people who have no other option to safely park a car.” A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council did not comment on whether it was concerned that drivers would park on roads to avoid the charges, and said the increase, which took effect from August 27, had been brought in because of cutbacks in funding from the Scottish Government. Mountaineering Scotland will be making contact with Argyll & Bute Council to ask them to look again at their policy.

RED SQUIRRELS MAKING A COMEBACK Red squirrel awareness week begins on September 24 and there’s news that the native species is making a comeback beside the Gareloch. There has been a steep increase in sightings this year according to the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels project.

Reds have been slowly making their way down the west side of Loch Lomond from Arrochar and Tarbet.”

to decline in range and numbers, allowing a complete recovery of red squirrels in areas occupied by pine martens.

Numbers of the indigenous red squirrels have declined dramatically over a period of decades, as grey squirrels spread across the UK.

She asked people to help by reporting their sightings of both red and grey squirrels on scottishsquirrels.org.uk

A similar effect has also been found to occur in several parts of Scotland where pine martens are present.

The reason for the local recovery by red squirrels is not clear, but pine martens have been spotted on the Rosneath Peninsula and research in Ireland has shown that the recovering Irish pine marten population, who hunt squirrels, is causing grey squirrels

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels is a partnership project led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and includes Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland, RSPB Scotland, Scottish Land & Estates and the Red Squirrel Survival Trust.

A spokesperson for the project said the Gareloch area was seen as important for conservation since it sits on the very edge of where the grey squirrels of the Central Belt meet the red squirrels of the Highlands. Conservation officer for Argyll, the Trossachs and Stirling, Mary-Anne Collis, said: “The recent reports of red squirrels in Garelochhead are the most we’ve received in many years. “We’ve had a few sightings since 2015, but only the odd individual. To some degree they are surrounded by grey squirrels, but we’ve also recently had red squirrel sightings in and around Balloch, at Stoneymollan and in Balloch Castle Country Park.

The growing popularity of Helensburgh Heroes’ Big Chair chat show events drew quite a crowd to meet perhaps the tallest man ever to visit the Burgh. At the end of August they welcomed 6’10” Glasgow Rocks professional basketball player Kieron Achara who took to the Big Chair to discuss his life and career. He said: “I go to universities in America and I see kids going in and getting degrees who statistically had more chance of going to jail than going to university. That’s what sport can do and basketball can do it really well.”

Another inspirational figure takes to the Big Chair on Kieron, who studied in the October 3. A recent study reported that the health impacts of loneliness can be devastating; it is worse for you than obesity, and as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Chronic loneliness is cutting lives short, and the problem is growing.

Jim’s weekly visits mean a lot to both of them, and of course to Harry’s wife. Once a keen sailor, Harry looks forward to the visits of a friend who is able to reacquaint him with the sights and sounds of Helensburgh (and the occasional ice-cream and Irn Bru), and Jim loves listening to the stories of a remarkable man who is determined to fight his disease. One of the 7 wonders of the Natural World, The Great Barrier Reef stretches for 1430 miles from Bundaberg in Southern Queensland all the way to Cape York and is a combination of 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays. In 1981 UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site and it is the only living thing that can be seen from Space. It can also be experienced in many ways, including overnight stays and it’s no surprise that it is one of Australia’s most popular tourist attractions, and one that I personally recommend highly! Oratorio choir needs some more male singers

The Will Todd Trio will perform their acclaimed Jazz Mass with the Oratorio choir

The Helensburgh Oratorio Choir is calling for new members as they prepare to welcome acclaimed choral composer and jazz-artist Will Todd to Helensburgh later this year. Under the enterprising leadership of Musical Director, Jonathon Swinard, the choir are about to start work on an all-swinging jazz programme featuring Will Todd’s Mass in Blue accompanied by the composer and his jazz trio. “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for the Oratorio Choir,” says Jonathon Swinard. “The Mass in Blue effortlessly fuses sacred choral music with jazz and is widely considered Will Todd’s defining work. It has already received hundreds of performances across the world and we are honoured that Will and his Trio will

be joining us in Helensburgh for this concert.” After a sell-out performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah earlier this year, the choir is now welcoming new members of all voice types, but especially men, to join them for the new season which started on 28 August. Jonathan adds: “Helensburgh really is so fortunate to have such a talented musical community and there has certainly never been a more exciting moment to join the Oratorio Choir than this one.” Alongside the Mass in Blue the

winter programme will also include works by John Rutter and the legendary jazz pianist George Shearing. The choir also plan to host a Come and Sing Mozart Requiem in early 2019. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:30pm in Helensburgh Parish Church Small Hall. New members are warmly invited. For more information contact Jonathon Swinard conductor@helensburghoratorio. co.uk or visit the choir’s website: www.helensburghoratorio. co.uk. Read about Will Todd on willtodd.co.uk

SCOTS AND SWEDES TOGETHER AGAIN A Choral Concert called Songs of Friendship for Christian Aid will feature an international cast with the welcome return to Helensburgh of Sollerökören, who were last here in 2015. Since 2010, the Helensburgh Family Singers have been 'twinned' with a Swedish one, the Sollerökören, and has now sung with it in Scotland, Sweden, Portugal, Romania and France. Sollerön is a village on an island in a beautiful lake in Central Sweden where Tony Kent of Helensburgh was born. It was he who established the connection,

and brought about the formation of the Helensburgh Family Singers. Since the 2015 concert, the choirs have added to their travels and have sung in Scotland, Sweden, Portugal, Romania, France and England. The concert on 16 September includes much of the repertoire they performed in the Suffolk village of Clare last year.

Tony tells us: “This is a very welcome return of Sollerökören, to Helensburgh and as well as Swedish and Scottish songs, the programme on 16 September will include the short 'Missa Amicitia' by a member of Sollerökören, Agne Samuelsson, and two orchestral works one of which, Handel's Organ Concerto 'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale', features Derek Clark as soloist.“ The soloists in the 'Missa Amicitia' will be Elspeth Davis, Tessa Charters, Iain McGinley and Ivar Murelius. The orchestra will be led by Christine Sinclair and the conductors will be Britt-Inger Nilsson and David Bruce. The concert is being presented in support of Christian Aid, Helensburgh. If you want to know more about the work of Christian Aid there are some stories on their website including their ‘Stronger than the Storms’ resources including a children’s film www.youtube. com/watch?v=LMd8oB6PePM

The choirs have sung together in several international venues

September 2018 | What's Up Doc?

FUN FACTS FROM THE PARK Some fascinating facts have emerged from the ÂŁ3.5 million refurbishment of Hermitage Park. The Heritage lottery fund is the major funder, but other big contributors include Argyll and Bute Council, Armed Forces Covenant, the War Memorial Trust and many community groups and small grants. The new drains if laid out end to end would run from Hermitage Park to the Rugby Club, a distance of 2km. The new paths cover 3.9km, the same distance as from the Hill House to Craigendoran Station. There are enough new steps in the park to climb to the top of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh at 60m high. The kerb stones of the new paths cover a distance of 5.3km, the same distance as from Rhu Marina to Craigendoran Station.

On top of that ÂŁ102,000 worth of volunteer hours (at rates set by the Heritage Lottery Fund) need to be donated to the project. They are currently at about ÂŁ40,000 worth with three years to go.

The Friends of Hermitage Park are committed to the long term sustainability of Hermitage Park and wish to develop an endowment fund to help develop and look after Hermitage Park in the future. If anyone would like to contribute, perhaps by purchasing a commemorative tree at ÂŁ500, please contact the Friends. Details on Facebook.

the bladder continues to fill, this can become very painful, relieved only by passing a tube (catheter) into the bladder. The steam treatment being pioneered is not widely available, but involves passing a tube into the prostate and puffing steam to remove some of the excess tissue and widen the passage, and may have fewer complications than surgery.

The prostate gland is only found in men, and sits at the base of the bladder. It normally tends to grow with age, and in older men can cause restricted flow of urine from the bladder.

Men with even early prostate symptoms should speak to their doctor, who can arrange tests to rule out prostate cancer and may suggest medication which can help relieve symptoms. But don’t expect steam treatment just yet!

This can result in increased visits to the toilet, which can affect sleep if during the night, slowed emptying of the bladder and increased risk of urine infections. At its most severe it can cause complete blockage, and as

OLDEST TREE NOMINATED The Helensburgh Tree Trust has nominated the old yew tree at the top of Glasgow Street for the Tree of the Year competition being run by the Woodland Trust. The entry pointed out that this very old tree predates the current street plan in the town although it is now located on a grass verge of Glasgow Street. Many of the houses in the area were built around 1850, but this tree must be considerably older than that. Most likely it is the oldest of the town’s street trees - it may even be the oldest tree in the entire town.

This match funds the £13,500 over three years that it received part of earlier in the year from The Robertson Trust. Susie Will, the founder of the Youth Café said: “We are delighted. The Robertson Trust have already given us three years of security by ensuring that we have salary for our youth worker for three years.

the space and get some new equipment.” Susie adds that the Café also received £2,500 this year from TSI Argyll and Bute Council, who have supported them over the last seven years and provide premises for the Café to use. They have also been able to buy some footballs, scooters and skateboards for use at the café.

“This enables us the luxury of planning in advance, as there have been times when we have only managed our overheads a week at a time .

Plan Budget

Bridal Party

Think carefully about who will be the best people to support you on your special day. Extra costs may include outfits, bouquets, buttonholes and thank you gifts, so the more people you have, the more this could impact your budget.

Guest List

Decide who to invite to the day versus the evening taking into account your guests' plus ones. Based on your budget your guest list may need to be determined by how much you want to spend per head on catering.

The Perfect Wedding | September 2018

Wedding 6

Bride's Dress

A lot of wedding gowns can take up to six months so give yourself plenty of time. Once you have chosen your dress, turn to bridesmaid dresses that will complement your wedding gown and groomswear that will suit the style of your big day.

7

Gift List

Although it may feel strange telling guests what you want as a gift, it will actually make the process easier for them. Your guests will want to buy you a gift so save them the stress of trying to decide what to buy and create a wedding gift list.

5

Suppliers

Your venue may have a list of recommended suppliers, but you might want something a little bit different so gather all the options before booking your suppliers and paying your deposits. Don't be afraid to shop around!

8

Stationery

Your invitations should be sent out approximately 3-6 months in advance. It’s never too early to choose a design, style or stationery supplier that you love. Send out 'Save the Date’ cards ensuring your guests keep that date free.

All my paintings are one off originals, no prints, therefore you can be assured of high quality original pieces of art that won’t be seen anywhere else. My paintings come from the depths of my heart and are truly inspirational, they are product of many years of painting and study of the great modern masters like Pollock, Motherwell, Rothko and Picasso.

RNLI LAUNCH FLOAT TO LIVE VIDEO

Argyll and Bute Council’s Trading Standards team is warning people to be aware of doorstep coldcallers, after receiving reports of traders turning up unplanned at peoples’ homes. The council says they must, before carrying out any work at your property, provide you with written details that include the name and address of the trader, the price and details of the work involved. You must also be given a 14 day cooling-off period in writing. The trader must not start work before these 14 days unless you have given your written permission to do so. If you ever feel uneasy about a caller at your door, contact Trading Standards or Police Scotland immediately.

A major music festival taking place near Loch Lomond this month is offering a unique opportunity for some young up and coming artiste.

COMPETITION

Loch Lomond Live – which takes place at Drymen’s Show Field on September 22 and 23 – have launched the LLL: Upcoming competition on Facebook, offering the chance for a talented local act to perform a “stripped back” set on their Session Stage on the Saturday.

The Community Advertiser has teamed up with Loch Lomond Events to offer you a chance to win tickets to the Loch Lomond Live music festival.

Tide Lines will be one of the headliners at this year's Loch Lomond Live

Organiser Ross Coutts said: “We’re very keen to support local bands too - around a third of our line-up is from nearby areas.“

This will effectively launch the brand new festival, and is a high profile opportunity that could help some talented performer reach a larger audience. The festival welcomes acts including Donnie Munro (exRunrig) and Highland group Tide Lines to the national park, as well as popular festival acts Clann an Drumma, Trail West and Rollin Drones, and around 5,000 visitors are expected to descend on the area over the weekend.

Have Mercy Las Vegas and Dave Arcari are probably the two most well-known, but the likes of Folky Macfolk Face, The Foz & The Super Pumas are doing really well, and I’m sure they’ll all put on a great live performance”. The eclectic line-up also features the best emerging indie rocks acts with Declan Welsh, Foreignfox and Mark Sharp and the Bicycle Thieves among

ORCHESTRA COMPETITION The Community Advertiser has teamed up with Scottish Fiddle Orchestra to offer you a chance to win tickets to the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra Concert.

HELENSBURGH COUPLE’S ART ON SHOW A retrospective exhibition of artists Ted and Elizabeth Odling opened on September 1st at Helensburgh Library. The couple lived in Helensburgh for 18 years from 1965 to 1982.

and film. Both he and Elizabeth worked as freelance artists for, amongst others, the BBC and the National Trust for Scotland. Together they created short films for the BBC including Tam o’ Shanter (Robert Burns) and the traditional Scottish ballad, Sir Patrick Spens. “Elizabeth also produced many illustrations for the Radio Times during the 1950s and her work is marked by a close attention to detail seen in her drawings and engravings.”

We have 3 pairs of tickets to give away for the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra Concert held at the Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 15th September. To enter the Orchestra Competition, email editor@ communityadvertiser.co.uk with "Orchestra Competition" in the subject line. Include your name, address, phone number and answer the following question: Which concert hall is the Scottish Fiddle orchestra playing in on 15th September? Throughout their careers, Ted and Elizabeth often worked as a team producing murals for the Burns Club in Irvine, The Burns Cottage Museum, Culzean Castle and Chatelherault Country Park. Their murals at the Burns Club in Irving are still in existence. Their daughter Noelle tells us that over 40 works will be on display until the end of October including paintings, drawings, lino prints, mural work and diverse art and craft objects, representing the wide span of their creative output. From 1949 to 1982, Ted was a member of staff at the Glasgow

School of Art where he introduced many innovative teaching techniques and was latterly Head of the Foundation Year. Noelle said: “His work was informed by a keen interest in science and technology and included an early experiment in 3D television as well as photography

Ted and Elizabeth and their children spent holidays in Argyll, in Benderloch, Seil and Lismore. During these times, Ted produced many sensitive watercolour sketches of west coast scenes and Elizabeth, when not occupied by family life, created detailed drawings of natural objects. They finally moved to the Isle of Lismore on Ted’s retirement in 1982.

LOVELY VIEWS FOR 10K RUNNERS EVENTS AND One of the most picturesque running events takes place this month when FESTIVALS FUND the unique Arrochar 10K is back for the third year running. This is a multi-terrain race run under a permit from Scottish Athletics and is open to anyone aged 16 or over. The field is limited to 150 runners, who will start at 10.30 am on the 15th September and tackle a multi terrain course amidst views of the Arrochar Alps and in particular the famous Cobbler munro. Organiser Dawn Gourley said: “The runners move smoothly out of sight on level forestry road through farmland and then power up the Succoth Hill through Forestry Commission land glimpsing wonderful views of Loch Long and Arrochar down below.

The current records are very commendable, given the ‘occasional evil nature’ of the course. The male record is held by David Savage in a time of 36 minutes and 10 seconds and the female record is held by Simone Charnock at 43 minutes and 20 seconds. This is a significant day for the local community and the course is very well marshalled with

“They then descend a mountain bike trail and are marshalled responsibly across the road entering the Argyll Forest at Ardgartan. In the second half of the race they accelerate along the Lochside on flattish pavement with views of Loch Long and Arrochar throughout and Ben Lomond sneaking into the picture before the finish line.”

particular help from a variety of local community groups. Competitors and their supporters all congregate in the local Village Hall for coffee, home baking and copious prizes, donated by various generous sponsors. Competitors can enter through www.entrycentral.com/ Arrochar_10k, or just come and cheer on the runners and be part of the spectacle.
