Message from the Chairman of the Helensburgh Highland Games Committee
Message from Patron & Chieftain of the Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games
This year has seen Scotland go through an election and a referendum both of which could change the future of Scotland but the traditions which have remained unchanged for hundreds of years take place in towns and glens throughout the land ....Highland Games! It draws people from all over the World to take in the excitement of watching the strength of the Heavyweight contenders, the running abilities of the athletes the grace of the Highland Dancers and skill of the wrestlers.
Helensburgh - the jewel of the Clyde - a town that my family has been proudly associated with ever since its founding by Sir James Colquhoun in the late eighteenth century, in honour of his wife Lady Helen Sutherland. Legend has it that Sir James could not think of a name for his new town, so referred to it as “my Lady Helen’s burgh” – the name stuck, and the Helensburgh of today would in many respects be recognisable to Sir James, especially the grid pattern of its streets which represent one of the best examples of early town planning in Britain. My ancestors were amongst the first Chieftains of the Helensburgh Games back in the mid 1800s and I am very proud to continue with this tradition. Enjoy this day, which is aimed very much at families. It is my personal hope that you will go away with many memories of Highland hospitality and the spirit of fierce (but friendly!) competition for which we Scots are rightly famous.
Today we welcome you to our Games at Helensburgh and offer you all of these events to enjoy beside the many stalls to browse and great children’s entertainment . Its a day when Helensburgh can welcome guests from all over the UK and indeed Worldwide. Due to imminent storms in 2015 we unfortunately had to cancel our Games but in 2014 we welcomed over 14 different nationalities but its also important to the Games committee to especially welcome the local people of Helensburgh and Lomond. May you all have a wonderful day. ‘Haste ye Back’
Sephton ‘Mac’ MacQuire Chairman

A brief history of Clan Colquhoun of Origins of the Clan Colquhoun
I
n the 13th century Maol Domhnaich, Earl of Lennox granted the lands of Colquhoun, located in Dunbartonshire, to Humphry de Kilpatrick. Humphry’s son, Ingelram de Colquhoun, who lived in the reign of Alexander III, was the first person recorded as taking Colquhoun as a surname. Around 1368, Luss, on Loch Lomond, was acquired by Sir Robert Colquhoun through marriage. From then on the chiefship has been described as of Colquhoun and Luss. His grandson Iain Colquhoun of Luss married Margaret, the daughter of the Earl of Lennox. When James I returned from English imprisonment a few years later in 1424, one of the people he took his vengeance upon was the unsupportive Lennox. Lennox’s position was devastated, and Iain of Luss took advantage of this to win the King’s favour by capturing Dumbarton Castle from
Lennox. By 1427 he was Sheriff of Dumbarton and by 1439 he was dead, like his King, killed by those he had treated so badly. By way of compensation, James II made Luss a free barony for Colquhoun’s grandson Sir Iain. It remained this way until the 1745 Jacobite rising.
Early Years
I
n 1424 the Clan Lennox was decimated and Iain Colqhoun of Luss took advantage of this to win the King’s favour by capturing Dumbarton Castle from Lennox. Sir John Colquhoun of Luss was appointed governor of Dumbarton Castle during the minority of King James II of Scotland, and was murdered in 1439 during a raid at Inchmurrin. He was succeeded by his son, also Sir John, who rose to be Controller of the Royal Household, and extended considerably the family estates. In 1457 he received a charter incorporating all his lands into the free barony of Luss. The forests of

Luss & The Battle of Glen Fruin Rossdhu and Glenmachome together with the lands of Kilmardinny, followed a year later. In 1474 he was part of the embassy to King Edward IV of England, seeking to negotiate a marriage between the infant James IV and Edward’s daughter, Cecilia. He fought at the siege of Dunbar Castle, held by rebels against the king, where he was killed by a cannonball.
The Battle of Glen Fruin
T
he Battle of Glen Fruin saw Luss invaded by the Clan Gregor in 1603 and the defeat of five hundred Colquhoun men, three hundred of whom were on horseback, by four hundred MacGregor men. Over two hundred of the Colquhoun men were lost when the MacGregors, who had split into two parties, attacked from front
5
and rear and forced the horsemen onto the soft ground of the Moss of Auchingaich. It meant the proscription of the Clan Gregor. It wasn’t until the 18th century that the enmity between the clans was interred when, at Glen Fruin on the site of the massacre, the chiefs of the Clan Gregor and Colquhoun met and shook hands.
Clan Colquhoun today
S
ir Ivar Colquhoun, 30th Laird of Luss and 32nd Chief of Colquhoun succeeded as chief of the clan in 1948. He was the longest serving chief of the clan having served as chief for almost 60 years until his death in 2008. Upon his death he was succeeded by his surviving son Malcolm.

Brief Known History of The Highland Games in Helensburgh 1898: The first Highland Games to be held in Helensburgh is believed to have been held in 1898 in Larchfield Park.
1901: At the 1901 Games the World Wrestling Championship was contested by Tom McInerney of England & George Ross the Scottish champion. To the disappointment of the crowd, the title went south with McInerney. 1902: The 1902 Games saw A.A. Cameron from Partick break the world record for putting the 56lb weight, achieving 40ft 10 ins. 1905: Unfortunately the 1905 Games made a loss, & there were no more Games until 1924. 1949: Games were held in 1949 this time at Camis Eskan, where 15,000 people turned up on the day. 1952: The 1952 Games were again held at Camis Eskan with 14,000 spectators on the day.
HELENSBURGH
2007: Small committee met together in September and made the decision to start up a Highland Games once again in Helensburgh. There were many obstacles to overcome but in just eight months planning was well underway and the Helensburgh Highland Games came into being in June of 2008. With around 3,400 it was a great start. 2008: With a name change to Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games (HLG) a second very successful year with an increase in attendance especially from abroad. We were also given a Running championship due to the excellent grounds for the athletes and also the 22lb Shot Putt in the Heavies events. 2009-2010: Were also both very successful Games with further championships being awarded by the Scottish Highland Games Association which now includes the British 90m, Scottish 200m & 800m running events and the Scottish 22lb Shot Putt. Not bad for five short years.

Brief Known History of The Clan MaCaulay
7
C
lan MacAulay was historically centred on the lands of Ardincaple, which are today consumed by the little village of Rhu and burgh of Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute. The MacAulays of Ardincaple were located mainly in the traditional county of Dunbartonshire, which straddles the “Highland Line” between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands. Clan MacAulay has been considered a “Highland clan” by writers and has been linked by various historians to the original Earls of Lennox and in later times to Clan Gregor. The MacAulays of Ardincaple, like Clan Gregor and several other clans, have traditionally been considered one of the seven clans which make up Siol Alpin. This group of clans were said to have claimed descent from Cináed mac Ailpín, King of the Picts, from whom later kings of Scotland traced their descent. The chiefs of Clan MacAulay were styled Laird of Ardincaple.
