Gwyn has also continued to enjoy cycling holidays each year with Christine. He says: “I still haven’t lost that feeling of loving to ride my bike. Every single time that I get on my bike and for the first few minutes it always feels like magic. I urge people to try it.”

Milngavie Week returns Milngavie Week will take place once again - and after a 10year gap - thanks to demand from people in the community.

Ruth Blakey, of Milngavie Community Development Trust, is delighted by the commitment of local people to the new week. She says: “So many local organisations have volunteered to put on an event and this shows their commitment to the revival of Milngavie Week.”

The Week will start with the Bearsden & Milngavie Highland Games and will close on June 18 with Milngavie’s Classic Car Show. More than 20 different events for all ages have been lined up, including treasure hunts, a school debating competition, a primary school football tournament, shows for cats and dogs, a guided walk and a (plastic) duck race.

At St Andrew’s Church hall, teacher Jenny Oswald is keen to welcome new members to her Circle Dancing for all sessions.

The classes on Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm are open to men and women of any age and across all fitness levels. No partner is required.

Jenny first discovered Circle Dancing 20 years ago and brought it to Milngavie eight

years ago. She says: “I was immediately taken by this form of movement and exercise when I first attended a class and I decided that I wanted to teach others about it.

“It’s accessible to all kinds of people and requires no prior experience, yet it brings about a lot of happiness and joy as well as the fitness benefits of dancing and being active.”

The dances have a wide variety of form and mood, from slow and meditative to energetic and celebratory.

“Dancing is well known for its fitness benefits and circle dancing is good for the memory and co-ordination skills. It’s such a wonderful way to exercise with others and have fun.”

becoming “bored� with road running and 10ks, he switched to trail runs and took part in his fi rst off-road ultra-distance race in 2014, the 69-mile Wall in Northumberland. He was immediately hooked.

At 1am on June 18, 200 runners will stand nervously on the start line of the annual - and epic - West Highland Way Race in Milngavie.

He says the appeal of the WHW Race is “wondering if I am capable of such a task�. He adds: “I used to work in Milngavie opposite the start of the WHW and spoke with a few of the runners in 2014. This inspired me to enter in 2015 because the massive challenge, both physically and mentally, really appealed to me.

Ahead of them is 95.28 miles of Scotland’s famous longdistance trail, which finishes in Fort William, in the Scottish Highlands. The race is a huge test of endurance yet entries are over-subscribed and many runners return time and again to complete the ultra race.

In the final weeks before the event, we talked to two local runners who will compete in the WHW Race 2016.

In WhW race time. The community worker was inspired to take part after twice walking the trail with his son Gary. Peter says: “The fi rst time we walked it Gary was seven and it took us eight days. The second time, when he was 11, we did it in four days.

“As an ultra marathon runner, it seemed like a natural challenge to run the race, especially as it’s on my doorstep. However, I know that the sheer physical and mental challenge will push my body to new limits.”

The April event saw Donnie Campbell from Edinburgh win the race, breaking the previous course record by 11 minutes to finish in 6 hours 51 minutes and 6 seconds.

This year, Peter will rely on his own support team, his wife Helen, daughter Emma and running friends Aurel “Skippy” Lewis and Alan “Gannet” Lindsay.

It was Donnie’s 6th Hoka Highland Fling finish. His previous best was taking third in 7:17 at last year’s race.

The WHW is a super spectator event and runners welcome the cheers and support of the crowds. You can line the sides of the trail on June 18. See westhighlandwayrace.org

In the women’s race, Beth Pascall, from Bristol & West Athletics Club, raced to the fi nish in Tyndrum in 7:52:55.

dog of the Month Rory the dog was brought in to Avalon Veterinary Clinic in Milngavie after he vomited the ear of a dog toy. While at the vets, he brought up more parts of toy, including the other ear.

But the vet Anna was worried that Rory still had more parts of the toy in his stomach so he was sedated and X-rayed. This

confirmed Anna’s suspicion, The owners agreed that Rory should undergo a full general anaesthetic and exploratory surgery to remove the foreign body in his stomach and to check his intestines for any other foreign bodies.

During the operation, Anna removed two toy squeakers from Rory’s stomach.

Because Rory also suffers from chronic kidney disease, he needed to be hospitalised on intravenous fluids for a couple of days but he has since made a fantastic recovery Once Rory was allowed home he needed a further check up to ensure his wounds were healing and then to have his stitches removed.

Rory has been chosen as pet of the month at Avalon for his bravery and because after all the treatment he was still happy to visit the vets.

John and Anne Wyke will host their Open Garden Weekend on June 18 and 19 at 6 Ledcameroch Road, Bearsden, G61 4AA. People can visit between 2pm and 5pm each day.

The aim of the event is to raise funds for local charity Yogability, which provides free yoga classes to children and adults with special needs, and the Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre, based at Gartnavel Hospital.

Ann says: “Both of these charities are very special and we hope to raise as much money as possible for them with our open garden event.”

She adds: “The format of the open days will be for people to visit the garden, wander around

at their leisure with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. There will also be lots of cakes and cookies to indulge in.

“Then, hopefully, everyone will make a donation so we can pass on the funds to the charities.

“As well as the donations box we will have a plant stall with lots of interesting things for sale. Last year we had more than 1,000 pots!”

Last month a restaurant owner in England was jailed over the death of someone who had been given a meal made with peanuts, despite having a known peanut allergy. The victim had suffered anaphylactic shock and died as a result.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. It affects all the body systems, causing swelling of the tissues affecting the eyes, throat, lungs, gut and skin.

This results in breathing and circulatory problems which if untreated results in dangerously low oxygen levels and occasionally death.

Allergies have become increasingly common in the past 20 years.

Fortunately people are quicker to

recognise these and affected people can be supplied with “Epipens”. These are pen shaped devices which anyone can use to inject Adrenaline when pressed against the skin, Adrenaline being the very effective antidote to anaphylaxis if given early.

People who have suspected severe allergies can be referred to the Anaphylaxis clinic to help identify the cause and prevent repeated episodes. Sometimes antihistamines or steroid tablets can be taken to reduce the chance of future reactions although careful avoidance of known triggers is the best way. If you are concerned this may be an issue for you, then speak to your GP as early as possible to get the best advice!

The 2nd Milngavie Classic Car Show looks set to be even bigger this year with more than 40 vehicles already lined up to appear.

The car exhibition takes place on June 18, from 10am to 4pm, in the town’s precinct area and is being organised by Milngavie Town Centre BID Limited.

Ania Surma, BID Co-ordinator, said: “Last year we had 30 classic and vintage cars and the event was enjoyed by hundreds of people. This year we have more cars and we hope to see even bigger numbers visiting the show.

“This will be a great occasion for all kinds of people and across every age. Many people enjoy looking at cars from times past and there will be a wide range on show.”

Some of the cars that will be on display date from as early as 1933 and there will be a variety of car makers and models represented, including Jaguar, Corvette, Mini, BSA, MGT, a 1950s fi re engine, a

classic-style campervan, rally cars and vintage motorbikes.

The cars will be distributed across the whole of Milngavie’s precinct and it will be a free event for the public.

Ania said: “There are still places available if people would like to bring their classic cars to be part of the show. We will also have small area with market stalls.

Castlehill Primary School is organising a free Summer Fayre and Barbecue this month.

Funds raised will benefit all children in the school, including primary pupils and nursery children.

InsPIrInG PeoPle: artist Mark niven While faced with a range of challenging disabilities, Mark Niven, of Milngavie, has found a way to cope through his love of art.

As a child, Mark struggled with many school subjects, including maths and English. In early adulthood, he was diagnosed with learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, including Asperger’s, and severe dyslexia.

More recently, his diagnosis has been extended to include Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) and Developmental Coordination Disorder.

Suffering from CVI means that Mark’s vision can be affected by the way he is positioned in relation to an object.

Although his eyesight is good, it is the signals his eyes send to the brain that can

become confused.

Yet throughout his life, Mark has enjoyed art and shown a great talent for painting. His silk artworks of urban landscapes and nature exude vibrancy, brilliant colour and observation.

Mark explains how art makes him feel. He said: “At school, I couldn’t seem to do some subjects like other children in the class but art was easy. I could show people that I was good at something and it felt very freeing.”

reMeMBering saM… A new book remembers the life and work of the celebrated late Sam Galbraith, a talented neurosurgeon and a local MP and MSP.

His achievements in medicine and politics, many of which have had a lasting effect in improving people’s lives, were made despite diagnosis of a life-threatening illness when he was just 41 and a subsequent lung transplant which left him with limited health.

A group of his friends and former colleagues have come together to produce and publish the book, Remembering Sam: The Life and Times of Sam Galbraith.

Each of the chapters is written by someone who knew Sam in one of the many different aspects of his life, including his acclaimed career as a Glasgow neurosurgeon and a long-serving incredible life and work. WrIter Jan reveals Local journalist Jan Patience has revealed how she came to be coauthor of an important biography about Scottish artist George Wyllie.

The book has already received great praise. Scottish actor Alan Cumming said the book offers a “fascinating insight into the great, quixotic life of George Wyllie, and how he came to leave his indelible mark on the Scottish arts landscape.”

Author and broadcaster Muriel Gray added: “This delightful book is the most wonderful explanation of who the artist and the man George Ralston Wyllie really was and where he came from.”

The biography project first came about when a mutual friend originally from Bearsden, Fiona

Escape from it all Welcome to Rosevale Cottage which is now open and in its first year as a Holiday Let. Rosevale Cottage is a one bedroom semi detached cottage with terraced garden and views of Gareloch.

Until August 2015 it had been left desperately needing some TLC so work commenced to bring the cottage back to life.

The overgrown garden was cut back and landscaped and now a dining/seating area with BBQ awaits guests looking for ‘a get away from it all break’ in the peaceful surroundings of the ‘Green Isle’ (weather permitting of course!!!)

Inside Rosevale Cottage alterations were made to create light, clean spacious rooms but with trying to keep some of the original features too which date back to approx 1926.

Jan, of Bardowie, near Milngavie, wrote Arrivals and Sailings alongside the late artist’s daughter Louise.

Black, put Jan and Louise in touch with each other. The Wyllie family were keen to do something to celebrate George’s life and work and they hoped that Jan could help.

Jan has been a journalist and editor for more than 25 years.

She writes on visual art for the Herald, Homes and Interiors Scotland and the Daily Record, among others.

Jan said: “From the outset I was very keen to be involved with any project that would remember the amazing life and work of George.

His most famous works, Straw Loco and Paper Boat, had made a big impression on me.”

Sadly, George died in May 2012 but by then Jan had become the driving force of a new event, the Whysman Festival, which culminated in a retrospective of the sculptor’s life.

After the festival, the idea for the book began to “ferment” in Jan’s mind. She said: “I was very taken

by George’s story and I wanted to do more to remind people about the great artist’s life.

about how this bunnetwearing boiler-suited pensioner could just pop up on the art scene in the 1980s like he’d been there all his life and make such profound statements.”

Jan reveals that co-writing the biography with Louise was a “very intense experience”. She said: “You get very close to your subject. My husband said it felt like he was married to George Wyllie at times and he had never even met him!

“There were also many

challenges, not least that Louise lives in the Highlands so this made it logistically difficult.

“However, it felt like such a huge privilege to excavate the life of such an important artist.”

Arrivals and Sailings reveals Wyllie’s life, from his humble and happy beginnings in the suburbs of Glasgow through turbulent years in Europe and on the Pacifi c Ocean with the Royal Navy during Word War II. Though Wyllie spent time drawing, sketching and taking

Declaring that it was “TIME FOR ART” in the 1960s, he immersed himself in the art world. Wyllie’s lifelong love of performance and his fascination with the absurd led him to create memorable and politically provocative public artworks, such as the life-sized Straw Locomotive, which hung from the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, and the giant seaworthy Paper Boat, which was seen by millions on its voyage from Scotland to New York.

Louise is delighted by the book.

She said: “This is about an artistin-the making and offers an accurate account of my father’s life. It illustrates the influences that stimulated him into making and sharing accessible art.’

Jan added: “I hope the biography becomes text-book reading for all would-be artists.”
