It is Open season for visits Robin House, Balloch

St Augstine's Church, Dumbarton

Strathleven House, Dumbarton

September brings with it the chance of a great free day out – and you don't have to travel more than a short distance from home. The annual open doors week starts on Monday, September 10, with an excellent array of places to see and organised walks to join, spanning everything from a close look at the famous Maid of the Loch paddle steamer to some of the area's most architecturally interesting churches. If you aren't a parishioner of St Patrick's RC Church or St Augustine's Episcopalian Church chances are you've never seen beyond the doors of these and other time-honoured ecclesiastical icons. Each has its special story, and its individual and often stunningly

beautiful features to enjoy. There are numerous events in and around Clydebank, for example tracing the area's important industrial heritage, and these could be well worth the short trip from Dumbarton, while in Old Kilpatrick Elizabeth Pitts and Susanne Hall will guide you through some of the lesserknown but intriguing facts of the area's semi-hidden past. Meanwhile if you have never visited Clydebank Museum, or at least not recently, this could be the ideal time to go – because as a special extra on Saturday, September 10, there's an

Then on Saturday, September 10, well-informed guide David Harvie will give a talk on the River Leven's close association with bridges, glass and textiles, in the course of an absorbing two and a half hour excursion running from 10am till 2.30pm. There are new galleries featuring exciting touring galleries, as well as the council's permanent exhibition of fine art. One surprising addition to the list is Robin House in Balloch – the children's hospice run by CHAS – whose exterior and gardens are well worth a visit and rated “definitely suitable for all the family”.

WHAT THE FOLK: The Folk Festival has been a great success in previous years but unfortunately had to be cancelled in 2014

It's only September, but a working party of dedicated local folk fanatics have launched the countdown for a lochside festival next summer. The recent mini-folk festival in Balloch (staged in various licensed premises) was a trailer for what promises to be the fully-fledged relaunch of the late-lamented Loch Lomond Folk Festival, which ceased its previously 14-years unbroken run in 2014. It seems rising costs and organisational challenges had become too onerous for the original volunteer organisers

ALL ASPECTS OF ROOFING UNDERTAKEN

Yet its fans reckoned it was the best little festival in the country, typically attracting manageable attendances of under 10,000 people, as opposed to the multitudes swarming to major rock events. It's to rekindle this sort of quality entertainment

to handle, and to add to their problems there were other high profile events taking place in the area at around the same time.

that the venture is now, after much consultation and discussion, definitely being relaunched next year. We recently covered the latest Fenton's Bar festival in Alexandria, which not only raised a tidy sum for charity but also proved just what an appetite there is for music events in West Dunbartonshire. The previous folk festival looked like it was going to be a permanent fixture, and certainly didn't fold because of apathy or lack of interest. Meanwhile the event can hope to tap into a huge reservoir of enthusiasm and good will from the well-established folk circuit in and around Glasgow, with the considerable lure of a stunning lochside venue to call upon. There's no telling how many bands will perform, who the sponsors will be or even where the concerts will take place, but in months to come we can expect information updates as and when they're available on the working party's facebook page at www.facebook.com/WorkingPARTY-145423352542569/

WEST OUT FOR GOLF GLORY AFFORDABLE Locksmith ServiceS

The late Charlie Green would probably be delighted to find an annual East-West county golf derby staged in his memory. The legendary Cardross golfer is fondly remembered in each Dunbartonshire Leisure High School Golf Championship – an annual Ryder cup-inspired match for secondary pupils. West Dunbartonshire ideally need to win this year’s event to draw level with their Eastern counterparts, who have won two of the previous three games. East Dunbartonshire’s team won the inaugural event in 2013, West won it back in 2014 and East came out on top again in 2015 – so there’s everything to play for. The Active Schools team in West Dunbartonshire will be holding regional qualifiers in the form of West Dunbartonshire High School Golf Championship at Dalmuir Golf Course on Saturday, September 3 from 1.30pm onwards. While we never encourage taking on a pet on impulse, we currently have rabbits in our care looking for good, permanent homes

The Scottish SPCA is keen to encourage existing and would-be owners to consider taking on a rescue rabbit rather than buying a new bunny from a shop, as the number of abandoned, unwanted and neglected bunnies coming into its care has steadily increased over the last five years. Joe McDade, manager of the Dumbarton centre, said: “In 2015 we rescued a staggering 669 rabbits across Scotland, which is a 20% increase on the 555 rabbits we cared for in 2010. “This worrying trend demonstrates why we need to raise awareness of the hardships many pet rabbits face. “Some rabbits arrive in our care in a terrible state having been denied basic nutrition and

veterinary attention, while others are sadly forgotten pets children have grown tired of. “Thankfully, the severe cruelty cases are in the minority. The biggest issue is rabbits being put in a hutch and left at the bottom of the garden, with many enduring a life of solitude and boredom. “Often the only interaction they have is a brief visit from

A PIPING HOT PARK PLAN the precious urban green spaces bequeathed to the Burgh in yesteryear, but as the Scottish Pipe Band Championships showed the park is also a perfect performance space for a massive bands spectacular – and all the side attractions and special features that go with it. PIPE-TASTIC: Levengrove Park plays host to the Scottish Pipeband Championships every year .

Levengrove Park in Dumbarton was already a great open air venue before this year’s epic Scottish Pipe Band Championships. But it could be on course to become a Premier League showpiece for everything that’s great about traditional Scottish music and culture, thanks to a major development plan. The Park has literally won the Lottery, with a £2.8million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, in a move that will see many of its original Victorian features restored to their former glory.

FITTED

There’s also to be a new pavilion with cafe, and revamped play areas, while Kilmahew Fountain will gush once again and paths will be upgraded too. The council are ploughing £920,000 intro the project, along with cash from Historic Environment Scotland. Heritage Lottery’s Scottish operation says there’s a pressing need to preserve and enhance

Bringing the park up to full modern spec will underline the importance it has in local life, while flagging it as the headquarters of a superb freeentry contest capable of drawing no less than 141 different bands – which in turn has to be seen as a major tourism opportunity at the height of the holiday season. Regeneration chief Councillor Patrick McGlinchey says proudly: “Once the work is completed Levengrove will be transformed, and with its stunning setting on the banks of the Clyde will offer visitors an experience which it will be hard to rival anywhere else in Scotland”. Levengrove Park is the area’s only Victorian park and currently attracts almost 150,000 visits each year – and that could soon easily rise.

The National Park authorities have been teaming up with the police to prepare visitors for new rules on Loch Lomond. The new restrictions on “wild camping” come in next year, but meanwhile the public have been encouraged to take care of the local countryside in a Respect Your Park campaign which centres on responsible camping, noise, safe fires, fishing, and other obvious considerations. he search for a perfect wedding is limited only by budget. But is it? Fact of the matter is that sensible spending aligned with good taste will produce a day that everyone will enjoy just as much as an OTT splurge which leaves you without a deposit on a flat! Having a big fat wedding can feel something like a big fat financial transaction. So it's worth getting quotes from a lot of different people. Then, once you do, call in favours and get your mates involved. The more money you save on simple things, the more you can spend on other things. It's a big party and an important celebration but it's madness to put yourself in debt.

intage rings can be gorgeous, as well as thrifty. Don't think secondhand means second-rate – Kate Moss, Scarlet Johansson and Lara Stone all sport vintage engagement rings on their fingers - says moneysavingexpert.com You can find some real gems in vintage and antique shops. It's also worth hunting on eBay, though read sellers' feedback carefully and ask lots of questions (more help in Ebay Buying). A much-loved family heirloom can have more significance than a new ring – and best of all is free. So ask family members if they can dip into their jewellery boxes for hand-me-downs. You might get lucky.

T

he venue usually creates the biggest dent in your budget. Saturdays always costs most. Experts say Fridayw or Sundays can cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half - Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by even more. Major savings are also possible on winter weddings due to fewer bookings. If a winter wedding is planned, the opportunity for outdoor pictures is likely to be limited, so this may swing the decision towards a venue with a deluxe interior, including dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace. These will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

The organisers say that last year nearly three quarters of child seats they checked were fitted incorrectly – and that it only takes five minutes to see if yours is correctly fitted. A spokesman said: “Unfortunately errors on seats are very easily made, but the great news is that they tend to be easy to fix.”

The function of the Children’s Hearing system is to protect children and young people from risk of harm and provide supervision for those in need. The Hearing members can make certain decisions for legal steps to be taken to help these children, including to determine where a child should live. These steps may be taken because the children themselves have committed a crime or there are concerns that a parent is struggling to meet the child’s needs appropriately. The decisions made at a Children’s Hearing can have a huge impact on a child and their family and can

ultimately interfere with their Human Rights, particularly respect for family life. Many people do not appreciate the consequences Children’s Hearings and Social Work Referral cases can have on them and are also unaware that they have the right to have their solicitor attend the hearing with them. Legal Aid may be available to the parents and children to assist with this. There are certain circumstances where Legal Aid is automatically available to the child. It is important that you contact your solicitor for further advice if you have any concerns regarding your child and a referral to the Children’s Reporter.

CASH BONUS FOR CHAS Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) says it’s thrilled to have received a welcome £10,000 donation from home, garden and leisure retailer The Range. It’s vital cash that will go straight towards funding the day to day care for children and young people who have life-shortening conditions for which there is no known cure – as at the Robin House hospice in Balloch and the other CHAS hospice in Kinross. Spiritual care, transition guidance and bereavement support are just a few of the vital services that CHAS can offer, to ensure that children and their families can make the most of the time they have together. Many who know the value of the work carried out at Robin House will agree The Range has made a sound choice by choosing CHAS as a cause well worth supporting. It seems the fast-growing firm

Panel members were officially thanked by the council for their contribution at a special reception where Irene Murdoch from Dumbarton and Janet Crabtree from Clydebank were congratulated on 15 years’ service. Others were similarly honoured for their commitment, and 18 new Panel members received certificates to recognise successful completion of their training. communal achievement was also used as an opportunity to raise awareness of what the Children’s Panel tries to do. Councillor Hazel Sorrell, the council’s representative on the West Dunbartonshire Area Support Team, said: “We are dedicated to improving life chances for children and young people and the Children’s Panel has a key part to play in achieving that. “It is fantastic to see so many local people dedicate their time to a service that makes a real difference to children going through difficulties.” Children’s Hearings Scotland Board member Marian Martin

added: “Having grown up in West Dunbartonshire I know what good neighbours the people here can be to other families. “Helping children and young people who have experienced difficult lives reach their full potential is important to them. Both the panel members and the area support team members deserve this recognition of the important work they do and the value they add to the community.” Anyone interested in becoming a Children’s Panel member, or who would like to find out more, should visit www.childrenspanelscotland. org or contact Scott Kelly at the council on 01389 737220.

THE ARDESS GOOD LIFE If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping the rat race for the life of a simple cottage of olden times now’s your big chance. In a special two-day free event called Ben Lomond Clanscape the National Trust for Scotland is inviting visitors to experience some of the daily realities of life in the days before microwaves, the internet and Pokemon. At the recently-thatched cruckframed building at Ardess, Rowardennan, a variety of traditional skills will be on display, from spinning yarn to stone carving – or you may fancy mowing a meadow with a scythe. Then, to the strains of live traditional music, you can learn rope-making techniques before relaxing with tea and bannocks around the fire.

The evening continues the focus on music, with a ticketed event to see and dance to The Shiverin’ Sheiks: ”a bombastic force of 50s tunefulness, with a handsome mix of country, gospel, dancefloor Rock’n’Roll and Doo-wop.” With hand-made pizzas and a specialist menu at the community owned restaurant, the Pit Stop Diner, there will be food all day and local craft beers to taste. Tom adds: “We hope people will join in this new Festival for all the Tastes, and look forward to another 30 years of events under the peaks of the Arrochar Alps.” Diary date: Saturday 24th September 12 – 6PM and 7:30 PM til Late. Three Villages Hall – Arrochar

Old race inspires new event

Household Tips

An annual cross country race which last took place in Arrochar in 1947 is being reinstated after the winner of that event returned his cup.

Before you recycle any of your old newspapers you may have lying around, why not put them to good use. By placing a few sheets of newspaper at the bottom of your bin, it helps to soak up any accidental spills or any unwanted odours. This helps to keep your bin cleaner for longer!

One of the organisers Dawn Gourlay tells us: “This summer, the winner of that race, Mr Bichard, returned his Winner's Cup to the Arrochar, Tarbet & Ardlui Heritage Group. The return of the cup inspired us to launch a new Arrochar race using a 10K format. “This is being held on Saturday 17th September starting at 10.30am. The race starts at Stronafyne and covers a very scenic route, partly on forestry roads and then on pavement alongside Loch Long back to Arrochar. “The race is open to all aged 15 and above but given the history of the previous event it is hoped that people from the locality will take part as runners, marshals,

supporters and spectators. Each runner will receive a medal and a goody bag. There will be a range of prizes awarded. Prize giving will be held in the Three Villages Hall in Arrochar after the end of the race with free coffee and cake for all runners. Details: www.entrycentral.com/Arrochar_10k. Entry limited to 120 runners. Contact lrunarrochar@gmail.com
