Local News | June 2016

Join JiMMie At weirfest Organised as a major family fun day the festival will feature all the best ingredients of a summer gala day out, with everything from outdoor craft demonstrations to cookery demonstrations – not to mention a host of popular music acts. These will include veteran folkie Jimmie MacGregor, the Loch Lomond Ukulele Orchestra and Alastair MacDonald, among others.

WEIR'S WAy: If you remember the wonderful Tom Weir from Weir's Way then you're not alone.

June 18 is the date for the second annual Weirfest gathering, which will also include the Red Toorie Hat Festival – and it could easily attract thousands of Tom Weir fans. Tom Weir’s statue in Balmaha Bay seems to be a big enough attraction on its own, and it will a much-photographed reminder

of just how much he achieved during his eventful life as the crowds arrive to enjoy the day’s action-packed programme.

Turn To Us For Help And Support

There will be plenty of quality food to enjoy, in the course of a day which will put the area’s unrivalled natural environment centre stage. There will be outdoor displays, a Toorie Hat treasure hunt and all sorts of other entertainment – and if you don’t already own an iconic red toorie bunnet now is the ideal chance to acquire one, as these will be on sale too. And as well as free parking there’s a regular waterbus service on hand to ferry people over from Luss. Apart from acting as a focus for the enormous reservoir of

enthusiasm for Weir and what he stood for the special day has a strictly practical purpose, which is to raise funds for the Tom Weir memorial site – already one of the area’s top visitor attractions. A couple of months ago a mountain garden in honour of the famous broadcaster and his widow Rhona was opened on a perfect spot overlooking Balmaha Bay, a project which involved an outlay of £130,000. It includes a variety of typical mountain plants, as well as stones and rocks collected nearby, and encapsulates in one imaginative natural feature the hallmarks of everything Tom, as author and environmentalist, held most dear. It also acts as an excellent introduction to anyone who wants to see at a glance how important the flora and fauna really is – particularly youngsters discovering the countryside just miles from their urban homes. For further information and regular updates about this year’s Weirfest activities visit the Tom Weir facebook page or www. lochlomondtrossachs.org.uk

The West Dunbartonshire Citizen of the Year title went to 22-yearold Dalmuir woman Jennifer McGregor, who overcame her own health problems to help people living with disability and illness. Provost Douglas McAllister said: “I was simply astounded by the achievements and dedication of our final 10 individuals and three local groups who were shortlisted, and I hope the Provost’s Civic Awards served as a small token of appreciation for all that they do.” The winners will be guests of the Provost at the Queen's annual garden party at Holyrood in July.

The old buildings in Alexandria’s Mitchell Way are history – and a brand new local shopping amenity is now finally within reach. The first phase of the Mitchell Way redevelopment plans will see demolition squads clearing the site for much of the summer, causing some minor inconvenience for people used to parking their cars without problems. But the local shops are staying open, and it’s reckoned the end result will be worth the trouble. It will bring fresh retail life to the area with a new Lidl store, a homes development and

more shops. During the demolition period, the car park behind the current shops will remain open, although there may be temporary changes to how vehicles enter and leave the car park. The Lidl store will also have a car park with 145 spaces, which is to be created in the area of land being cleared by the demolition work. Council leader Martin Rooney

said: “This is a significant milestone in the plans to regenerate Alexandria Town Centre. The Council is committed to improving economic growth and by redeveloping Mitchell Way it will provide a renewed focal point for the community. “These units have been vacant for some time so I am pleased that they will now be demolished as work to breathe new life into the area gets under way.” As part of the demolition contract, a second phase of work will get under way once the Mitchell Way units are removed. This will include the demolition of the former medical centre and other vacant units on Bank Street.

Community groups in Bonhill are to meet senior council staff this month to flesh out details of a brand new £1.15m centre and nursery.

The existing Dalmonach CE Centre was forced to close in January following serious roof damage, and since then local residents have been using alternative accommodation. Now they’re to gain a completely new resource, to include additional nursery space to meet the increased future demand that is predicted to be needed in the nearby Dalmonach Early Learning and Childcare Centre.

Garages • Workshops • Playhouses • Kennels • Stables

The current Dalmonach CE Centre is more than 30 years old and was operated on behalf of the council by West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust. In recognition of the additional travel costs that some of the community groups are faced with due to their temporary moves to alternative accommodation a £4,000 fund has also been set aside to support this. Regeneration vice convener

“We will continue to work closely with the groups to ensure their needs are fully met until they are able to move their activities back into the newly-created Dalmonach Community Centre. “This will be a wonderful new facility which will provide an excellent base for many years to come.” Council leader Martin Rooney said: “This is fantastic news for the Dalmonach community. The current centre was well used by a number of groups and also provided additional space for the nursery. “So once this new facility is built not only will it provide first-class accommodation for various community groups but it's also going to create bespoke nursery space which will help to improve the life chances of our children and young people.”

Local News | June 2016

PiPiNG hot sUMMer FUN We’re now just a few weeks away from a summertime main attraction that could easily attract more than 25,000 people. The Scottish Pipe Band Championships 2016 will provide a whole day of top entertainment at Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park, which will be the gathering place for an astonishing line-up of more than 120 different bands – some of them world class acts. It’s not just a day for serious piping enthusiasts, as the entertainment includes a host of attractive stalls selling everything from quality sweets to jewellery, toys and souvenirs. But for participants it’s a main focus for months of hard work and practice, with prestigious titles to be won.

PIPING: One of the many competitors who will be competing in the Scottish Pipeband Championships

To be staged on July 30, the championships are a demanding test of skill for local and visiting pipe bands, who are only too well aware they’re under the eye of the judges in the battle for one of the most prestigious titles in the piping calendar. This has always been a popular event, rain or shine, but the area’s

growing reputation as a hot visitor tourism destination will give downtown Dumbarton some of the appeal usually enjoyed by the nearby national park. Easy to reach from Glasgow and other nearby conurbations by train, it has all the makings of a classic family day out, and with the advantage that entry for spectators is completely free. Last year over 200 children enjoyed the free activities provided in the WD Leisure Sports Zone, where they had the chance to test their football skills, take on athletics challenges, and try out the Clubgolf area. The Highland dancing competitions also proved popular with a number of local performers winning the prizes. This year’s action starts at 9am and continues all the way through to 6pm, making it one of Dumbarton’s top must-do events of the summer.

Loch Lomond FC won the Michael McGinley Shield last season and could possibly be involved in the final again this year. SPoNSoR: R&P Homes owner. Peter Ryan with players from Lomond FC who are benefi tting from sponsorship

This is the first “official” season for up and coming boys’ team Loch Lomond FC – and they’re being helped along by a homes builder. The lads are a 2001's boys’ football team playing in the Dunbartonshire Football Development League (DFDL), and are always on the lookout for promising new recruits. They’re proud of the name, and in a very short space of time have notched up some excellent successes – while training hard with the aim of gaining more. Now they’ve gained key sponsorship from R&P Homes

(Builders & Developers) in Gartocharn, and with it a welcome extra boost to morale. Company owner Peter Ryan says he is proud to be asked to sponsor the club for the 2016-17 season and is looking forward to coming along to support the boys on a Sunday morning. The team play their home fixtures on Dumbarton Common, and so far it’s been an encouraging

GAMES: Your area boast some of the best Highland Games in Scotland

The best outdoor events of the summer are still to come, with Highland Games spectaculars taking place in Luss and Balloch. The Luss Highland Games (Saturday, July 2) have been on the go since the 1870’s, with a few years’ intermission during each of the two world wars. It’s probably the biggest day of the year in Luss, and besides offering all the traditional tests of skill you find at Games events it’s a celebration of Clan Colquhoun, which supplies the Chieftain for the occasion. You can find out more about the

background to this very longestablished local event at www. lusshighlandgames.co.uk/aboutthe-games Then the action moves to Balloch a fortnight later for the Loch Lomond Highland Games, easily one of the main fixtures of its type in Scotland – and guaranteed to attract thousands at the height of the holiday season. Launched from very modest but

ambitious beginnings back in the 60’s the Games have grown in strength and popularity year on year, and are now arguably “the” must-see local event of the summer. To be staged on Saturday, July 16, the event is one of three across Scotland hosting the Scottish Highland Games Association World Heavyweight Championship and the 80 metre Scottish Sprint Championship. Based in Moss O’Balloch Park it also has the distinction of being the only Games to host a triathlon event – which naturally includes a swimming stint in Loch Lomond, now emerging as a world class outdoor events destination. They are the only Scottish Games to host a Triathlon, and there’s also piping, athletics, wrestling, cycling, dancing and very much more besides – you can find full details of the programme at www.llhgb.com Then next day, if you’ve any energy left, there’s the Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering at Howie Park in Rosneath – full details at: www.rosneathgames.co.uk

A step back into history

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: Anaphylactic shock…

The importance of Dumbarton Rock through the turbulent history of Scotland will be made plain in a special two-day event this month. More than 100 performers will stage an epic romp through the fascinating stories of the Romans, the Vikings, the Stuarts and many others in a grand history pageant which also includes a chance to find how swords and bows were made back in the days when weapons were as common – and as necessary - as umbrellas are today. The colourful narrative continues through the First World War into living memory, showing how Scotland developed through the sweeping changes that came with the cataclysmic events of the 20th century.

On a less warlike note there will also be a chance to learn how fashions evolved over the years – and to find out how Dumbarton’s iconic Rock and its castle has been maintained. Run by Historic Scotland, “The Rock of Ages” event is run to the same high standard as other mainstream summer events at key heritage locations including Edinburgh, Stirling and Linlithgow. The event runs from noon to 4pm on the weekend of June 4 and 5, and you can find booking at www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/events

The ultimate retreat...

Last month a restaurant owner in England was jailed over the death of someone who had been given a meal made with peanuts, despite having a known peanut allergy. The victim had suffered anaphylactic shock and died as a result. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. It affects all the body systems, causing swelling of the tissues affecting the eyes, throat, lungs, gut and skin. This results in breathing and circulatory problems which if untreated results in dangerously low oxygen levels and occasionally death. Allergies have become increasingly common in the past 20 years. Fortunately people are quicker to

recognise these and affected people can be supplied with “Epipens”. These are pen shaped devices which anyone can use to inject Adrenaline when pressed against the skin, Adrenaline being the very effective antidote to anaphylaxis if given early. People who have suspected severe allergies can be referred to the Anaphylaxis clinic to help identify the cause and prevent repeated episodes. Sometimes antihistamines or steroid tablets can be taken to reduce the chance of future reactions although careful avoidance of known triggers is the best way. If you are concerned this may be an issue for you, then speak to your GP as early as possible to get the best advice!

ART WINDOWS AND DOORS A GREAT NEW ENTRANCE Mr and Mrs Cargill were unsure if their porch could be converted at all as they really wanted to keep the old style of roof. After being let down by a few companies they saw an advert for Art Windows and Doors on TV and turned to them for advice. The Cargills were impressed with how professional ArtWindows and Doors were, and that they listened and understood what they wanted to achieve with their porch. They were also inspired with how Art took all of their needs and requirements into consideration and somehow managed to exceed their expectations. Another big selling point was how relaxed and pressure free the salesman was when he showed up to offer his quote. The Cargills then arranged to go to the showroom to

choose the correct finish for their porch and were given an installation date of 4 weeks which suited them perfectly. When the installers arrived it was all completed within a day and Mr Cargill said “The difference is like night and day”. The Cargills are absolutely delighted with how their new porch looks, and have recommended ArtWindows to all their friends, colleagues and a number of their neighbours are also considering getting their porches converted.

Deadline for grants aid There’s still time for local groups to make a pitch for a grant worth anything up to £5,000 for key local building projects. The Built Heritage Repair Grant includes all listed buildings and traditional buildings in the National Park, and organizers say projects that will restore the built heritage in public places in the heart of communities will be “particularly welcome”. Overseeing the grant scheme is Susan McGowan, Built Environment Adviser at Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, who said: “Last year’s successful scheme saw 11 projects completed with grants awarded to help repair traditional buildings in Stronachlachar, Gartmore, Strathyre, Milton of Buchanan, Luss, Callander, Aberfoyle and Drymen. “Over the past three years these grants have helped with the cost of maintaining a variety of important historical buildings in

the National Park. “We look forward to supporting more this year and encourage people and organisations to send in their applications.” In some cases work that may not seem urgently needed can nevertheless dramatically improve a feature which might otherwise deteriorate in time, and (potentially) a few thousand pounds from the fund can make a critical difference. Grants are available for up to half

of eligible works, to a maximum of £5,000, but the deadline for applications is noon on Wednesday, July 15 – and work must be completed and paid for by February 24 next year. To see if you are eligible for a grant, go to www.lochlomondtrossachs.org for more details or contact Susan McGowan, Carolyn O’Connor or Trudy Hughes on 01389 722620 or email repairgrant@lochlomondtrossachs.org.

New drive on dementia providing an opportunity for everyone in the community to become involved with Alzheimer Scotland’s dementia friendly community project. It’s a chance to learn about the therapeutic benefits of gardening for people with dementia and their carers. Alzheimer’s disease is the main form of dementia, while the second most common is vascular dementia. – and as yet there is unfortunately no cure.

Alzheimer Scotland has been challenging Dumbarton people to get involved with a campaign designed to end stigma and isolation. The charity was this month preparing for the last week of special local events in its Challenge Dementia campaign, which has seen eye-catching events staged locally and right across Scotland. A spokeswoman told Community Advertiser: “Dementia is our biggest health and social care challenge. In Scotland there are 90,000 people living with dementia and the number is rising. Around 76% of Scots know

someone who has dementia or cares for someone with the condition. “That includes over 3,000 people under the age of 65 who have dementia. This illness can’t be ignored; dementia is everyone’s business and we must take action now to make sure nobody faces it alone.” Alzheimer Scotland has been holding open afternoons every Thursday at its allotment in Eastfield Place, Dumbarton,

ou want to be on top form and get the best out of the summer. What you eat will give you a boost. That means fruit, fresh vegetables, particularly broccoli and other green vegetables, dried fruits too such as apricots, raisins and mango give a concentrated source of carbohydrate, making them a great energy booster. Bananas are the perfect fitness food and packed with nutrients - so is the peel. Try the whole banana in a smoothie.

K, this is the tough one. We all mean to but somehow life gets in the way. One easy way to start is simply walk quickly for 20 minutes - make it part of your journey to work, you’ll feel far better when you arrive. Or how about combining a swim with your morning shower. For a long term plan local gyms can tailor a fitness programme for you and you are more likely to succeed with the professional, experienced help that they can provide.

ou go away to wind down and destress. But that can start long before you go. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Adopting the theory that "less is more" can help you to enjoy your time with family and friends. Plan some time to yourself. Choose something you enjoy doing alone, such as reading, taking a bath, yoga, walking or listening to music, and do it for at least 15 minutes per day. Ultimate relaxation.

Burns Club’s new book Dumbarton Burns Club is using the summer holidays to prepare a new and updated version of its own club history. It’s likely the long-established organisation will feature more photographs in the reprised work, which could be available in time for the classic traditional St Andrew’s and Burns events in November and January. Meanwhile fundraising for local causes remains important, with CHAS, The Robert Burns Memorial Homes and Erskine Hospital each receiving £500 this year, while £50 will also be giving to Epilepsy Scotland and £100 to the Jean Armour Trust for the use of its care home residents.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB This month:

Consuming Alcohol in Public

The recent spell of sunny weather has given us all high hopes for a great summer full of impromptu barbeques at the beach and picnics in the park. This idea generally goes hand in hand with an ice cold beer or a glass of something sparkling. Although this sounds extremely civilised, unfortunately, often people drinking alcohol in public areas can become anti-social and cause a nuisance to others. In order to tackle this problem and reduce alcohol related incidents of disorder, all local authorities in Scotland now have alcohol byelaws in place. There is no blanket

ban against drinking in Scotland. It is up to the council to decide where the byelaws are to be enforced and currently that is in around 480 towns and villages across the country. This is why you may hear of people being able to enjoy a few drinks in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens but not Glasgow Green. If you have any doubt it would be best to check your council website. The penalty for consuming alcohol if you are in a public area can put more than a dampener on your afternoon of fun in the sun and could result in a fine of up to £500.

THIS MONTH IDyLLIC: The beautiful village of Luss is soon to have fi ve new affordable homes built that will house families

Some lucky families will soon be moving into five new affordable homes in a key site in Luss, thanks to a £150,000 grant from Luss Estates.

01436 676921

info@spkcleaning.co.uk www.spkcleaning.co.uk

The homes are aimed at helping to answer what’s seen as a need for affordable homes in the area, and to shift the balance away from what could otherwise be an ageing local population. Sir Malcolm Colquhoun, Luss Estates chairman said: “We have been in negotiation with Link Housing for some time and I am delighted that we are now able

to make this major commitment to the future of Luss. “I very much hope that these new houses will be made available to local families - our main aim is to ensure that they are able to stay in the area.” Local MSP Jackie Baillie said she was “thrilled” by the £150,000 gift, and urged local people to

Sir Malcolm says the future of places like Luss must lie in developing economic opportunities alongside family housing, arguing these will lead to secure and properly-rewarded jobs – especially for the young. His ambition is to see Luss become a vibrant and thriving community, based on working families relying on local jobs which could range from forestry to tourism. The housing cash bonus is part of a development plan, commissioned and funded by Luss Estates, which aims to provide a “road map” for increasing the number of families in Luss. There will be dialogue between developer Link Housing and the national park authority to ensure they blend in with the area’s existing architecture. Luss Estates will also provide further financial support, if required, to bridge the gap between available grant funding and the actual build costs of the new houses.

If you go online you can also check out special events like the duck race staged during Scotland’s Gardens Open Day, or the Teddy Bears’ Picnic in the walled garden. HOBBIT HOLE: The exciting new features at Geilston Gardens are a great new addition

Children are at the centre of a whole raft of new features at Geilston Garden this summer. Geilston Garden, just outside Cardross on the A814 to Helensburgh, is reckoned to be one of the National Trust for Scotland’s hidden gems. Geilston is both intimate and tranquil, with the secluded appeal of a private garden - and is said to be a magical place for a family picnic, with unique surprises promised round virtually every corner. New for this year is the Hobbit

Hole play area, complete with picnic tables, a toddler-sized mushroom table and chairs set, not to mention magnifying posts which turn minibeasts into monsters. Meanwhile in good summer weather you could try out the soft tennis set on the old tennis court, and play with an exciting range of garden games. Visitors are also encouraged to tour the kitchen garden to see

This time of year is reckoned ideal for a visit, with the walled garden full of the scent of yellow Rhododendron luteum, and the bright colours of heritage Japanese azaleas. The rhododendron glen in the woodland garden is still in full flower, and the purple-blue Iris sibirica border lines the path beside the Geilston Burn. The entire woodland garden is carpeted by bluebells and wood anemone, and the kitchen garden is full of new growth, with a wide range of fresh produce on sale from around early July. A unique & effective approach to overcoming Dyslexia

Call Cellfield in STIRLING

Cellfield changes lives...

HELP TO OVERCOME READING & WRITING DIFFICULTIES In our modern world, strong reading and writing skills are crucial to success in order to maximise potential. An estimated 30% of children find reading and writing difficult - despite good teaching and support - and this is often attributed to dyslexia. Dyslexia is one of many barriers to learning which hinder progress and seriously affect selfesteem. Many families struggle to find help, however a unique brain plasticity-based treatment programme is achieving success in helping people overcome dyslexia: Cellfield is a multisensory programme which targets the areas in the brain used by good readers to bring about permanent and sustainable improvements in reading ability. Average gains in reading age of about 2 years can be achieved, although gains in reading age are only part of the story because, in many cases Cellfield proves to be lifechanging

due to the positive impact on overall selfbelief and confidence. Developed in Australia, Cellfield is being delivered by former Headteacher and teacher Fiona Macdiarmid, who also runs the successful Kip McGrath Education Centre in Stirling. Fiona travelled to New Zealand in 2009 for Cellfield training and then brought Cellfield to the UK. Contact Cellfield on 01786 447527. www.cellfield.co.uk
