Local hero honoured by Cancer Charity A sad but inspiring story leads our magazine this month (writes Nick Cowie). We want to tell readers about Elizabeth Boyd who volunteered in the town’s Cancer Research UK shop. Elizabeth worked in the shop for over 25 years and as the much loved jewellery and antiques expert helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charity. This summer she was due to be presented with an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of: “Unflinching loyalty and dedication shown to the cause over many years.” Sadly, at the age of 84, Elizabeth fell victim to the very disease she was dedicated to fighting. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away before she could receive the honour. Her husband George tells us: “She never even knew she had been awarded the fellowship, but I and our three daughters are immensely proud of her achievement. When I went to London for the ceremony I

was quite moved by how much people thought of Elizabeth. She was very dedicated to help fund research into the disease which in the end ended her life.” Sir Harpul Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s Chief executive praised Elizabeth and volunteers like her at the ceremony at Merchant Taylors Hall. He said: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. However progress is only possible thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists doctors and nurses. “Our Flame of Hope awards give us the opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to these enormously generous volunteers and support for the fantastic work they do.”

RECOVERY CAFÉ: The Café is being launched to help those struggling with their recovery

“Recovery from any number of life situations such as mental health, bereavement, and loneliness (the list is endless) are very much community issues. Not only do we aim to help people in recovery, it is also our mission to bring the Helensburgh community together. Our name “Well Come In” is exactly that. We have an open door policy to anyone who feels that the café will help.”

A group of volunteers is launching a weekly Recovery Café to support people in recovery from substance misuse on September 22 in Helensburgh Parish Church. Its aim is help people with such issues to reintegrate into society and build a support network. Gillian Simpson Third Sector and Volunteer Support Officer tells us: “We would like to introduce ourselves as the Well Come In. We are a group of volunteers working alongside a number of agencies to set up a community based recovery Café in Helensburgh.

“We will be providing a weekly café, with access to therapies, information, activities, peer led recovery and food. “People in our community are struggling daily with recovery. After the initial detox and professional help available, there is not much else. It is estimated that 58% of life-course dependent users of substances will achieve lasting recovery. Just

The Recovery Café is for anyone who wants to make use of it – not just those in recovery. It’s about breaking down barriers for everyone in the community and supporting people with substance misuse issue get back into their community. Further information gilliansimpson@argylltsi.org.uk

It’s all change at Helensburgh Photographic Club - a brand new venue, a new website to update members and show off their best work and new club equipment. The first session of the new season will start 20 September, at the Royal Northern Clyde and Yacht Club in Rhu and continue on each Tuesday evening at 7.30pm (instead of the Sailing Club). There is a brand new website which currently has some basic information on it. This will be added to and updated in time and interested photographers can

check out information on there. Already the new season's programme can be accessed as well as a small gallery. The new website is: Helensburgh-photo. co.uk. Please use the contact form on the website for any correspondence with the club and this will be answered in due course. Secretary Moyra Connor said:

Helensburgh Photographic Club welcomes photographers of all ages and abilities. The club aims to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and improving skills. It hosts a number of interesting talks and presentations from experienced and highly regarded photographers from all genres and it also runs workshop sessions covering photographic and editing techniques. For those so inclined there’s also a range of competitions for beginner and advanced groups. The photo with this article was taken by Tom Clark and was the overall winner in the Open Section.

ANTIQUE VISIT: Arusha (middle) with Anita and Alex outside the shop

An antiques shop in Kilcreggan had a visit from Taggart star Alex Norton recently. He was on the trail of some bargains for the Celebrity Antiques Road trip TV show.

Owner Arusha Irvine tells us the visit was the talk of the village especially as it is the second time Kilcreggan Antiques has featured on television. Glasgow based Antiques expert Anita Manning accompanied actor Alex Norton, best known for playing DCI Matt Burke in Taggart. They were seeking out some suitable treasures to auction - and they hope, make a profit for Children in Need Arusha said: “We only got two days notice. They bought two

items in total - an Edwardian item of souvenir ware and a beautiful original painting. A great fun day was had by all and Anita called the shop an Aladdin's cave. They were moving on to Stirling that day for the next round of filming.”

As part of a drive to bring live music to our area, Gibson Hall are proud to present Hotter Than Hell- tribute to legendary rock band KISS, on 30th September. With its band members coming from all corners of Europe, Hotter Than Hell came together in 2003 and have been voted as one of the hottest Kiss tribute shows in Europe, delivering the world-renowned classic 1970s style KISS stage show, by mimicking it in every way with pyrotechnics, fire breathing, smoking guitars and theatrical costumes. The Garelochhead date follows gigs at major festivals in Ireland and England, and will be supported by duo The Minogue Brothers

It is the second TV visit for the shop. Paul Laidlaw visited as part of Antiques Road Trip in late September 2015. That was televised in January 2016 and again repeated in May and June 2016.

Plans for Golf Club revealed farmland to the North.

PLANS REVEALED: Helensburgh Golf Club could be completely transformed if plans go ahead

A potential multi-million pound deal with leading housing developer Taylor Wimpey could secure Helensburgh a future as one of the finest golf clubs in Scotland. Many of the club’s 400 members recently attended an open weekend when they had a chance to examine, question and comment on the development plans for the Club. They were due to vote on the plans at a special general meeting as we went to press. The deal, subject to surveys and planning consent, would mean a new clubhouse, a completely redesigned 18 hole course including seven new holes, 11

upgraded holes and a six hole par three academy course and an upgraded practice area. For all that to happen part of the course would be sold for housing. But no houses would be built until the new course and clubhouse are complete, meaning 18 holes constantly available for play. The seeds of the development plan were sown way back in 1978 when the club had the foresight to buy the course and 60 acres of

The southern part of the course with its stunning views over the Firth always had potential as prime building land and as such generated excited interest over the years. But until Argyll and Bute council rezoned that area for housing, its potential was not achievable. Five years exacting work has gone into a draft masterplan for the course, clubhouse and housing. It was revealed in detail at the open forum weekend where representatives of the Management Committee, developer Taylor Wimpey, plus the clubhouse and the course architects were on hand to field questions. If members give it the green light, the masterplan will form the basis of the planning application.

Safe haven for harrier chicks Two young hen harrier chicks have been satellite tagged at the MoD Coulport base as part of a national project to protect and conserve these threatened birds of prey. The pair came from a nest of four young located at HM Naval Base Clyde’s Coulport site. All four chicks at the base on Loch Long were ringed and two, a male and a female, were tagged. Sgt John Simpson, MoD Police wildlife crime officer, said: “The security at HM Naval Base Clyde that protects the Submarine Service also provides a sanctuary for hen harriers, the most endangered bird of prey in the UK. “We understand that hen harriers are a necessary part of a healthy functioning countryside and are pleased we can play some part in helping to protect them.”

of nest protection, monitoring, community engagement and investigations work to secure a future for these birds in Scotland and northern England.

The satellite tagging was conducted as part of the RSPB’s part EU-funded Hen Harrier LIFE+ Project, a five-year programme

Data gathered from the tags will be monitored, to see where the birds go and identify the areas where they are most at risk.

This month: THE OLYMPIC LEGACY... This summer has seen huge successes at the Olympics by UK athletes, with sports as diverse as golf, tennis, rowing, gymnastics and cycling. Witnessing the rise of individuals such as our own Andy Murray, who has displayed incredible resilience and determination to reach the pinnacle of his sport by becoming a double gold medal winner, can be inspirational. Many people are now asking what these successes mean for ordinary people, as the financial support from the country for the Olympics has been considerable. I believe we can draw two main lessons

from it. Firstly I hope that this inspires people to get involved in sport at any level, which helps increase exercise levels in turn protecting against problems including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, lung disease, anxiety and depression. Secondly it shows what can be done when we set ourselves a target and work towards it, accepting there will be some failures along the way. Targets such as stopping smoking, losing weight or stopping drinking are examples but there may be others. We may not win gold medals, but can improve our health and get the best out of life!

Eleanor adds: “There is no doubt that we have gelled as a team, having social nights together, and this has hugely contributed to the cohesion of the sound of our voices. It takes quite a while singing in a choir before we learn to stop concentrating entirely on our own part, and listen to the people round about us. It's also worth hunting on eBay, though read sellers' feedback carefully and ask lots of questions (more help in Ebay Buying). A much-loved family heirloom can have more significance than a new ring – and best of all is free. So ask family members if they can dip into their jewellery boxes for hand-me-downs. You might get lucky.

Major savings are also possible on winter weddings due to fewer bookings. If a winter wedding is planned, the opportunity for outdoor pictures is likely to be limited, so this may swing the decision towards a venue with a deluxe interior, including dramatic features such as a sweeping staircase, feature wall or elegant fireplace. These will provide a lovely backdrop for pictures.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CHILDREN’S HEARINGS The function of the Children’s Hearing system is to protect children and young people from risk of harm and provide supervision for those in need. The Hearing members can make certain decisions for legal steps to be taken to help these children, including to determine where a child should live. These steps may be taken because the children themselves have committed a crime or there are concerns that a parent is struggling to meet the child’s needs appropriately. The decisions made at a Children’s Hearing can have a huge impact on a child and their family and can ultimately interfere

Many people do not appreciate the consequences Children’s Hearings and Social Work Referral cases can have on them and are also unaware that they have the right to have their solicitor attend the hearing with them. It is important that you contact your solicitor for further advice if you have any concerns regarding your child and a referral to the Children’s Reporter.

Old race inspires

new event

An annual cross country race which last took place in Arrochar in 1947 is being reinstated after the winner of that event returned his cup. One of the organisers Dawn Gourlay tells us: “This summer, the winner of that race, Mr Bichard, returned his Winner's Cup to the Arrochar, Tarbet &

Ardlui Heritage Group. The return of the cup inspired us to launch a new Arrochar race using a 10K format. “This is being held on Saturday

17th September starting at 10.30am. The race starts at Stronafyne and covers a very scenic route, partly on forestry roads and then on pavement alongside Loch Long back to Arrochar. “The race is open to all aged 15 and above but given the history of the previous event it is hoped that people from the locality will take part as runners, marshals, supporters and spectators.” Each runner will receive a medal and a goody bag. There will be a range of prizes awarded. Prize giving will be held in the Three Villages Hall in Arrochar after the end of the race with free coffee and cake for all runners. Details: www.entrycentral.com/Arrochar_10k. Entry limited to 120 runners. Contact lrunarrochar@gmail.com

Loch Lomond Hockey, a ladies hockey club based in Helensburgh, has just lost ten players. They are all off to university and jobs - so the club is looking for replacements. The Club has two teams. They play Saturdays throughout the season and there is always transport available. Last year they were able to field two teams in the District League and they both did very well, but due to the departures they have lost players, leaving the future of two teams in doubt. LIzzie Kershaw Yates tells us: “We hold practice at 1930- 2100 Tuesday evenings at Lomond School Astro turf pitches and all are welcome even if you cannot commit to every Saturday

matches. We are currently on the lookout for new players and umpires and a regular coach. “New players should be female and over the age of 12, beginners welcome and those who have not played since school and everyone in between. Two of our senior ladies this year played for Scotland in the home nations tournament and several of our U18s played for the District last year. We are friendly social club and keen to have new players.” See Loch Lomond Hockey Club’s Facebook page

A budget of £1.65m has been made available to keep roads clear in Argyll and Bute this winter. The council’s winter maintenance arrangements include 40 vehicles, nearly 15,000 tonnes of salt and 12 monitoring stations to check weather and road conditions. Ellen Morton, policy lead for roads and amenity services, said:“Despite the financial challenges the council faces we recognise that winter maintenance is a vital service which is why we have, as we did last year, made an extra £500,000 available, giving a budget of around £1,650,000 to keep Argyll and Bute moving during the winter months.

club installs LIFESAVING defib Craighelen Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, in association with CPR/Defibrillator Association Helensburgh (CDA) has joined the growing number of premises that have installed defibrillators. Each defib cabinet costs around £1500. Club representatives met with Keith Shipman from CDA who outlined a number of options open to them. They agreed a partnership to install a community defib outside the club, so that not just the members could benefit, but that it would be available to the community 24hrs a day. CDA Helensburgh say: We are dedicated to saving people's lives by installing public access defibrillators and training the public in CPR skills and how a Defibrillator works. “The first 10 mins are critical following cardiac arrest with the same chance of survival reducing by up to 10 percent for every minute that defibrillation is delayed. “Our aim is that 90 percent of the

population is within ½ a mile of a defibrillator accessible 24 hours a day.” CDA part fund the procurement and installation together with maintenance and training. The club made the commitment to raise £1000 towards the costs so a fund raising effort was started. Kurt Hart from the club said: “We raised the funds through a sponsored cycle undertaken by members of the club and CBF gym and a fundraising night. “On the night we had a BBQ prepared by Tam Milne & John Colman, local band "Student Disco Club" and a raffle (Prizes provided
