Outdoor play group Off Grid Kids has hit the jackpot and won a share of £30k funding to allow them to invest in resources and activities. The outdoor play group, which runs twice a week at Aidan’s Brae in Clarkston, was awarded £8,943 from the National Lottery for their toddler group. The cash boost will allow the group to reduce the cost of the play sessions to just £2 and will remain free for kids under 12 months. The money will also be used to upgrade the mud kitchen, sand pit and water play areas, as well as enabling them to host seasonal events with seasonal food and decorations. The team will also purchase gardening equipment,
including seeds, bulbs and planters. Jaqui Frame, owner of Off Grid Kids said: “We are delighted to have received funding from the National Lottery to enable us to continue the toddler group. “It’s extremely important to play outside and our service provides city children an opportunity to play in the beautiful outdoor setting to help build confidence and self esteem.” East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure was allocated £10,000 and will fund a series of creative and mindfulness workshops for
adults at risk of social isolation, while Busby Community Council will also get a share of the cash. Off Grid Kids’ pre-school session runs on a Monday from 12-2pm and Wednesday from 10-12pm in the forest at the top of Aidan’s Brae in Clarkston. As well as child-led play on site, there are seasonal arts and crafts, a fire, snack and hot drinks for parents. School children who love to explore the great outdoors can also attend the after school club, which leads to the woodland area for den building, cooking, crafts and outdoor play. NEW BOWLING BANNER BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE SEASON STARTS Busby residents have

designed a banner showing the history of the area, which is now on display in the heart of the village.
Mearns’ Bowling Club is celebrating the start of their new season with an open day, with free membership on offer. The 98-year-old club is inviting people to come along on April 7 from 2pm. They are offering new members a one year free membership of the club for 2018. Anyone can attend to watch or participate in a game, with all equipment supplied. The club also has winter social events and entertainment including bridge, darts, dances and cabaret nights and is based at The Cross in Newton Mearns, behind the War Memorial. For more information visit: http://mearnsbc.clubbuzz.co.uk
An arts and heritage project allowed participants to explore the history and the role that the textile industry played in the heritage of the area. The group participated in screen-printing workshops, led by the Glasgow Print Studios, to illustrate a textile banner. The banner depicts the railway viaduct at Busby, which was built in 1866 and the Busby Glen gates. It was designed by Thomas Hadden and local printworks. Anthony McReavy, chief executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: “This is a unique piece of artwork created by local people celebrating the heritage of Busby and the surrounding area.
“I hope people take the time to view the banner as a lot of effort and imagination has gone into creating it and it’s well worth seeing.” East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure ran the Ebb and Flow project as part of the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017, following the award of an £8,200 Heritage Lottery Fund grant. East Renfrewshire’s towns and villages are in existence thanks to the enormous impact the water-powered textile industry made on the area.

Securing your future and that of your family. It’s important for everyone to have a will.
Couples may be able to prevent their property being taken to pay for long-term care - BUT YOU MUST ACT NOW Most people expect that if you die all your assets will automatically go to your next of kin - this is wrong! Citizens Advice Bureau say “Couples...do not automatically inherit from each other unless there is a Will. The death of one partner may create some serious financial problems for the remaining partner.

Protect the future of those closest to you It is a very satisfying feeling when you realise that all your financial affairs are in order and you have the peace of mind to no longer worry about these things. We all know you should have a Will in place to protect your estate and your family but it is something many of us just don’t seem to get round to doing. This is why iLAWS Scotland make everything so simple for their Clients. A no-cost, no-obligation appointment is arranged for you in the comfort of your own home (or in one of their offices if preferred) where your wishes are understood and your options are explained clearly, allowing you to receive the correct professional advice and Will writing service ensuring that everything will go smoothly when the time comes.
Don’t risk losing your family home to cover nursing home fees if it is preventable. It’s heartbreaking if you have to give up your family home because you or your spouse has had to go into care. With proper estate planning advice this may need not be the case. Although every case can be slightly different, thousands of iLAWS Scotland’s Clients have taken advantage of the opportunity to protect their assets through a trust ensuring that their home and savings will always end up with their loved ones.
There are several ways to protect a property but on one such way “Which Money” say: “A will trust - also known as a testamentary trust - is created within your will to allow you to protect property you hope to pass on to your family. If you need to pay for care…the part owned by the trust is not counted. In this way it's protected from care home costs.”

A quick review of your circumstances will reveal your options for protecting your home.
Do you have a Power of Attorney? If you were ill, or if you were unconscious, or if you were too medicated, or if you had lost capacity…who can access your bank accounts, pay bills and make medical decisions on your behalf? The short answer is …no-one! Many people assume that your spouse or children can do all these things for you and that is just simply not the case nowadays. The only way to protect you finances and welfare is to appoint a member(s) of your

This month: HOlDinG BaCK THe YearS! Councillors Annette Ireland and David MacDonald were on offi cial ribbon cutting duties with the opening in Clarkston
New Indian cuisine, Spice Merchant, is now open in the heart of Clarkston. Councillors Annette Ireland and David MacDonald cut the red ribbon to celebrate at the grand opening. Residents gathered to sample some of the fine Indian cuisine on offer from the mouth-watering menu and tucked into celebratory cake. Owner Sal Mohammed was delighted with the turn out and the support he has received from the community. Sal said: “It’s more than we could have hoped for. We’re delighted to be offi cially open now and look forward to serving the local community.” The shop is open every day from 4-11pm for takeaway and delivery
services. The menu offers a wide variety of choices, including the Spice Merchant’s Specialities, such as chicken tandoori masala, to korma curries and popular Indian dishes. Pizzas, calzones, and king naan kebabs are also on offer along with set meals and munchy boxes. Cllr David MacDonald said: “I am very happy to welcome Sal Mohammed and his team to the Clarkston business community. “They are such a nice family and I hope the Clarkston community will show support for their business.” Pop into the store at 90 Busby Road or visit Spice Merchant Clarkston on Facebook.

A key indicator of frailty is something called “sarcopaenia”, which is muscle loss and weakness.
The immune system is important in protecting against infections, rheumatic disease and sometimes cancer. Indeed the good news for noncyclists is that evidence to date indicates that any regular exercise which pushes the body and gets you a little out of puff, will delay some effects of ageing!

Newton Mearns’ Parish Church has welcomed their new minister. Rev'd Stuart Crawford has joined the Church following his Ordination and Induction by The Presbytery of Glasgow. The congregation of Newton Mearns’ Parish Church was delighted to welcome him, along with visitors from the other churches where Stuart had served during his training. The formal proceedings were followed by a Welcome Social, where Stuart was introduced to the congregation by a friend and colleague in training, the Rev'd David Barr of Glenmuick in Ballater. The Rev'd Joe Kavanagh of Mearns Kirk welcomed him on behalf of local churches.
A group of Clarkston school children will travel to Malawi in June to help rebuild classrooms in the town of Ekwendeni. Staff will escort 36 pupils from Williamwood High School to the area and will help rebuild the space, which will be used by around 250 children. Teacher Chris McKenna, who will be leading the group, said: “In total, the group are aiming to raise £30,000 to allow us to rebuild three classrooms that are no longer safe to use. Without being rebuilt, these classrooms will continue to deteriorate and ultimately become unusable.” Williamwood School has been visiting the Northern Malawi town since 2010 and have developed close relationships with the community.

Spring
renovations After a winter of hibernation, a spring clean of homes and gardens will be on the cards for many Scots. Traditionally, now is the time when home owners plan DIY projects and think about interior and exterior revamps. First on the list of tasks should be a checkup of the property’s exterior to make sure it has survived the effects of snow,
rain, ice and wind during the chillier months. Issues to look out for include damaged brickwork, cracked render or chimneys, blocked drains, broken guttering and downpipes, rotten woodwork and fallen garden fences.

to see if there are any damp spots caused by leaks from missing or split tiles.
These largerscale projects will need to be planned and assessed for cost but they could add value to your property in the long-term.
Many of these problems will require expert advice and urgent repair work so the sooner you contact a reputable company the better. It’s advisable to seek at least three quotes for the work and ask for testimonials or customer referrals to ensure they will do a good job.
Your garden never looks its best just after winter. The plants and flowers will need a little sunshine to start their full display but meanwhile you can get on with a general tidy up.
Many homes will also benefit from general exterior maintenance every year. Use the spring and summer for tasks such as repainting your home, especially if it features woodwork, cleaning out gutters, revamping any decking or patio slabs, and repairing doors or windows.
Remove fallen tree branches and general debris from the grass and beds. Other jobs include weeding and renewing mulches on beds; planting seeds and pruning plants. Also look at potted plants to see if they might benefit from re-potting.
Perhaps it’s time to replace the windows or doors, consider an extension
If you can’t see the roof from ground level, go into the attic or upstairs rooms

TROPHY FOR SCHOOL CODING CHAMPIONS
Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: MeDiaTiOn
'The Docs', a team of scientists from Woodfarm High picked up their prestigious trophy for the JLR 4x4 Challenge in Abu Dhabi
A team of budding scientists from East Renfrewshire have won the Coding World Champions Trophy. Six Woodfarm High pupils travelled to Abu Dhabi and scooped the award at the prestigious engineering challenge and were shortlisted for the Innovative Thinking trophy. Suzanne Mowat, 15, led the team with Rory Graham, 16, Jake Gibson, 15, Daniel Tariq, 16, Rowan Roscher, 15, and 14-yearold Lewis Griffin. Known as ‘The Docs’, the team had to use computer coding to programme miniature remote-controlled four-wheel-drive cars they had designed and built for the competition.
the only school in Scotland to compete in the JLR 4x4 Challenge, and I’m very proud of Suzanne, Jake, Rowan, Lewis, Rory and Daniel. “The pupils are a credit to the school, to Scotland’s standing in the world, and to the future of STEM education in the UK.” The group joined more than 150 young people from 16 different countries at the final of the Land Rover 4x4 In Schools STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) progamme, held at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The Docs will produce the shell of a new prototype with the Land Dr Simon Hadfield, principal teacher of science, said: “We were Rover team.
Mediation is a practical and effective method of resolving disputes without resorting to the raising of a court action. It allows participants to come together and discuss their respective views and reach their own solution, with the assistance of an independent and trained mediator. The process is entirely voluntary; and in fact will only really work if both parties approach it with an open mind. The information provided during mediation is confidential and the purpose of this is to encourage open discussions and allow for every possible solution to be aired.
an agreement and do end up in court. Essentially, you are not able to found on discussions that took place during mediation in any future court action. It is important to be aware that the only exception to this is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties. Mediation is often used following separation and family disputes. However, it could assist in any number of situations, including neighbour or workplace disputes. If you think mediation may assist you in some way then it may be worthwhile discussing the process with you solicitor.
The confidentiality element Legal Aid can be made available remains even in the event the to fund the process in certain parties cannot ultimately reach #8873-Milngavie-95x133-2018-EK-e-PRINT.pdf circumstances. 1 13/12/2017 13:01

LITTER GROUP TAKES ACTION
CHaRiTy
SPiN-a-THoN “I have done several things for charity and I think it is great to raise awareness and get people involved, especially in such a communitybased place like Clarkston.” Swason Sports rounded up support on their Facebook page and posted progress updates throughout the day. They praised the work of the hospice and its team.
A local group is helping to tackle a national problem by taking to the streets to pick up litter. Clarkston Litter Action Group urged people to get involved in The Great British Spring Clean last month as well as organising their own first local litter pick up. Residents met at Clarkston Hall and set to work on picking up litter from all around the area. The Keep Britain Tidy’s aims to encourage 400,000 people across the UK to get outdoors, get active and help clear away the garbage that lurks around every corner.

Two Clarkston sports stores teamed up for a fun spin-a-thon event to raise money for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. Locals were happy to get on their bikes and pedal for pounds at the event, which was hosted by Swanson Sports, in partnership with Anytime Fitness. The sports’ store hosted the event in their shop window and cyclists were cheered on by the community. They were also encouraged to take part on the special ‘smoothie bike’, where they could hop on board and use pedal power to make a fruity drink.
The team raised £400 for the Glasgow hospice. Claire Murray, Anytime Fitness Club Manager, was happy to be involved. She said: “Two of our members from the gym own Swanson’s Sports shop. “The Prince and Princess hospice have helped look after the dad of one of our very valued team members and I wanted to do something to support her and her dad.
They said: “Glasgow’s Hospice aim is to help patients achieve the best quality of life possible in whatever time remains for them, and at the same time offer support for their families. “The Hospice is open 365 days a year, and to maintain the range of services which are provided, the team needs to raise £3.1 million each year from voluntary donations.” The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice is a registered Scottish charity that looks after the palliative care needs of people living in and around greater Glasgow. An electrical waste recycling trial project, which included collections in local newsagents, has reported “promising” early results. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) collection and recycling trial was carried out by a research team at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh for three months to January 2018. Residents in Milngavie and Bearsden, as well as Drumchapel, Giffnock and Clarkston, were encouraged to drop off their unwanted items at 12 newsagent collection points. Menzies Distribution helped to collect the
WEEE to pass on to Irvine-based CCL (North) for reuse or recycling. Umit Bititci, who is professor of business performance at HeriotWatt, said the analysis of the project is still on-going but “early results are very promising”. In Scotland alone, more than 135,500 tonnes of WEEE is generated each year. The reuse and recycling return rates for small electrical items such as mobile phones, computers and
The university project wants to explore ways to prevent small WEEE going to landfill because they contain hazardous materials that pollute the environment. Umit said: “During the trial, local residents responded to a Facebook campaign and leafl ets, They dropped off almost 500kg of unwanted WEEE. We were able to recover 10% for reuse, stripped 44% for spare parts and the rest has been recycled for base materials. “Ultimately, the pilot project will help us to advance research and gain insights into the practical challenges in developing remanufacturing and recycling.” See more details at www.lrc.hw.ac.uk/weee

We are over the moon with our new bathroom! From start to finish the whole process was smooth, easy and professional. The showroom is filled with lovely products and great ideas – but no big sales pitch or pushy staff. The products and workmanship are top quality. We are delighted and would highly recommend the team.
A great experience having the Bathroom Company completely change our bathroom! All the team were great and such hard workers. Dougie and Bob the plumbers went out of their way to help with design when somethings we had chosen weren't quite right. No hesitation from Richard about changing items along the way. They went out of their way to finish including a small utility. Nothing was too much trouble. The tiling boys and plasterers were also great. Highly recommend. Thanks again
My bathroom went from yugh to wow in 3 days as promised. From getting advice and help on choosing what I wanted to getting it fitted was great. All the guys that carried out the work were very good, friendly and cleaned up after all the different stages of the work getting carried out. If needing a lovely new bathroom installed and getting a good job done I would recommend using The Bathroom Company Glasgow

Tale of mystery & magic PHOTOS Eastwood Photographic Society is celebrating after winning individual and club categories at competitions in East Renfrewshire and Stirling.
A group of 50 local Explorer Scouts and leaders have told of the fun and success of an innovative five-day “mystery” trip. The teenagers and adults from the 28th (Giffnock) and Warrior (Clarkston) Explorer Scout units in Glasgow were told only to bring luggage and passports for the holiday, which took place in February. To add to the anticipation and excitement, leaders dropped hints to the Explorers of where the destination might be, including false Facebook posts and fake itineraries. Finally, the wait was over when the group arrived at Newcastle Port
and realised they were boarding the overnight ferry to Amsterdam. They then enjoyed a surprising range of the activities including a visit to one of the oldest theme parks in the world, Efteling; a Hard Rock Cafe night-time canal cruise and a tour of the Amsterdam Arena, home of AFC Ajax. Also on the programme was a visit to Carsmash Amsterdam. This unique activity involves dismantling cars using a variety of tools such as sledgehammers, baseball bats and hockey sticks.
Gordon Jack, one of the leaders of the Warrior Explorer Scout Unit, said: “It was after the resounding success of our first Mystery Trip in February 2016 to Copenhagen that we decided to make it a biennial event. “Explorer Scouts are given as little information beforehand as possible yet many were keen to come along. The trip was again a great success and it also offered the opportunity to bring two Explorer Scout units together to meet each other in a new setting.” See www.giffnockscouts.org. uk/category/explorers and www.121glasgowscouts.org.uk/ spage-sections-explorer_scouts.html
The Eastwood club will now represent the Scottish Federation in a UK-wide event this year, after coming second overall at the Scottish Photographic Federation Annual Club Print Championships, held at Stirling University. The competition, for clubs from all over Scotland, saw Eastwood Photographic society’s photographers come first in the Colour category and fourth in the Monochrome section, gaining second place overall. Alongside the club success, Mearnskirk member Peter De Marco gained a silver medal for photograph Heron in Winter Snowfall which was judged to be the best natural history print. Newton Mearns’ Stuart McCann’s Fintry Sundown won him the best landscape silver medal. Ken

We have the solution!
Last month’s article regarding funding options for home care drew a huge response from readers.
of the homecare package that a local council provides for you and to spend that budget with a Private Home Care provider.
Many queries and questions came from unhappy readers who were already receiving a homecare package from their local council but due to short and irregular visit times and lack of continuity with carers did not meet their needs.
The advantage? Putting YOU in control of the care you receive.
The good news is if you are currently a recipient of a council homecare package you can request to be assessed for an SDS package instead. Under SDS (Self Directed Support) Legislation you are entitled to take a Direct Payment in Lieu
With this payment you will have the right to choose your provider and have a tailored homecare package that meets your specific needs. Private providers will deliver minimum one-hour visits with the same CarerGivers meaning continuity and consistency of service. Get in touch if you would you like a free copy of our Home Care Funding Fact Sheet.

Scientists have concluded that the chicken came first not the egg, because the protein which makes egg shells is only produced by hens.
WET GRIP Scientists have the answer to why fingers shrivel up like an old prune when we soak in the bath. Tests confirmed that wrinkly fingers improve our grip on wet or submerged objects, working to channel away the water like the rain treads in car tyres.

Craft beer enthusiasts in East Renfrewshire are gathering for a day trip to the capital next month for a brewery and tasting tour. East Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire's Craft Beer Group have arranged their first tasting trip to Stewart Brewery in Edinburgh. Members will be picked up in Clarkston by mini bus and brought to the capital for an in-depth tour and beer at the tap room.
