Luke Traynor, pictured in action for Scotland, ran a record-breaking victory in his first half-marathon and is a future Scottish runner to look out for
A former pupil at Newton Mearns High School ran to record-breaking victory in his first half-marathon race this autumn. Luke Traynor crossed the finish line of Manchester’s largest half marathon event in one hour, four minutes and 10 seconds, which was 31 seconds ahead of last year’s best time. In front of a crowd of 10,000 people on the streets of Trafford, the 24-year-old runner took an early lead and kept up his impressive pace right through to the finish line.
Bespoke Kitchens, Bedrooms & Home Studies
Luke, who finished third on the track in the Trafford Grand Prix 10,000m in August, was thrilled with his win at the race at the end of October. The Giffnock North AC runner said: “Obviously, with the half marathon being over double the distance I have run in competition before and it being my first attempt, it was hard to predict a time-goal.
“However, I was confident my training had gone well and I was prepared to challenge any of the elite competitors but it is never easy running out front. “The great support throughout from the crowds really encouraged me through to the end, especially on the last mile. “I was absolutely delighted I was able to break the course record and I hope it is just the beginning for me.” Luke left high school to study at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he graduated with a degree in environmental management. He then took up an athletics scholarship to the University of Tulsa, in Oklahoma. He graduated from Tulsa at the end of June and spent five weeks training at altitude in California before returning to his home in Glasgow. Luke is tipped as a Scottish runner to look out for in the future. He said: “My long-term goal is to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

A fascinating story of a rich textile heritage in the local area is the topic of this month’s meeting of the Mearns History Group. Tom Marchant, who has been a member of the group since it was founded in 1999, will be showing a fi lm he made recently entitled: Made from Textiles, the story of Rouken Glen and Thornliebank. Tom said: “The film looks at the textile works that were established in the lower part of what is now Rouken Glen and the

hotel’s hike for Charity managed to climb a mountain and raise a fantastic amount of money for a great cause. “ I’m incredibly proud of the team at The Busby Hotel as they always go the extra mile”. The Munro climb is just one event in the Busby Hotel’s charity calendar. Earlier this year, the Staff organised a hike to the top of Ben Lomond (inset), adding nearly £2,000 to the cheque handed to Judith King from When You Wish Upo n a Star charity.
A team from a local hotel has climbed a mountain to raise almost £2000 for a charity partner, When You Wish Upon a Star. The Busby Hotel organised a hike of 974 metre tall Ben Lomond, one of Scotland’s most popular Munros, on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Some 23 people walked to the mountain summit and raised £1,845 for the charity that supports families of siblings of children aged two to 16 who are living with a life-threatening illness. The hotel on Field Road in Clarkston managed to find time
for the charity challenge amid a busy period that included nine weddings. The climb took place in inclement weather but the group pulled together to support each other to reach the top. Juliet Parry, general manager at the hotel, said: “This was a huge challenge for us and we were all rewarded with a great sense of achievement. “Even though we’ve gone through a busy spell with lots of weddings and functions, we also
hotel invited some of the Wish families for an afternoon tea with fun and games. This even also raised £800. The hotel invited Judith King, from When You Wish Upon a Star to collect the latest cheque. She said: “Team Busby go above and beyond in both fundraising and giving back to the amazing children and their families who we work with and we can’t thank them enough”. See www.thebusbyhotel.co.uk

Lauryn, 13, who is a second year pupil at Williamwood High School, will take part in the British Figure Skating Championships 2017 in Sheffield. The talented skater has been training hard to perfect her routine since she scored enough qualification points at a competition, the Rooster Cup, in Paris earlier this year against skaters from across the world. Lauryn is a member of Auchenharvie Club, which she attends five to six times each week. Her mum Angi said: “Lauryn is very dedicated to her sport and has been skating since she was aged six. She trains at an ice rink in Stevenson, Ayrshire, because there are no suitable facilities in Glasgow.”

Lauryn’s coach, Natalie Dallas, is a former show skater and British Champion and has travelled all over the country with Lauryn. She also took her to the Paris competition. Natalie said: “I am very proud of Lauryn. She has worked very hard over the last four years to achieve her goals.” Lauryn is excited but also nervous about the

forthcoming championships. She said: “I am really pleased to have qualified and I will be going to the competition. “It makes me nervous thinking about it but I have been doing a lot of practice so I think I will be ready.” This is Lauryn’s second time at the British Figure Skating Championships. Last year she competed in the Novice A category, for under 13s and this year she moves up to Novice B for 13 to 15-yearolds.

find your uni of 3rd age Are you retired and looking for new hobbies and activities? Or perhaps you’ve a talent or interest that you would like to share with others. If so, the local branch of the University of the Third Age could be your perfect destination. Founded in France in 1973, the U3A later found its way to Britain and encourages people aged 50-plus, who are retired and semi-retired, to “learn for pleasure and fun”. The East Renfrewshire U3A, which was created in 2008, is a thriving branch of some 220 members and welcomes interested locals to try a taster session. Some of the most popular groups include Around the World Dining, Taste the World, Walking and an Out and About group. There are also language, science, reading, bridge, discussion, garden visits, theatre, table tennis and craft groups on offer. Rosalind Holmes, Groups Coordinator for the East
Renfrewshire branch, said: “U3A is a self-funded and self-managed organisation and members form subject groups through which they learn and share knowledge in friendly and informal surroundings.
“After that it costs just £15 for an annual subscription, which entitles you to attend the monthly meetings and as many groups as you want, as well as access to the online newsletter, Chit-Chat.”
“There is something for everyone at our U3A and we welcome new members to come along for a 'taster' at one of our groups or join a monthly meeting in Newton Mearns Parish Church Hall.
The U3A branch is also keen to hear from people who would like to start a new group and teach or lead in a new subject or interest area. To find out more see u3asites.org.uk/eastrenfrewshire

The “massively successful” Great Clarkston Gift Hunt is back for another year – and this time it is predicted to be bigger and better. The innovative public Gift Hunt is the brainchild of I Love Clarkston BID (Business Improvement District). Last year, over one week, some £700 worth of prizes donated by local businesses were claimed by residents. This year, the total prize value is likely to be around £1000. Andy Dunlop, manager of I Love Clarkston BID, explains the concept. He says: “The Great Clarkston Gift Hunt is similar to a treasure hunt. When businesses donate a prize, usually up to the value of £50, this is turned into a ‘golden ticket’.
“The golden tickets are then hidden each day over one week in the local area. People can see a cryptic clue about the hiding places of the tickets on our I Love Clarkston Facebook page. If they find a ticket they then take it to the business and swap it for the prize.” “The community got into it in a very big way last year with more than 100,000 hits on social media in just one week – and this year we expect it to be even more popular.” The Great Clarkston Gift Hunt 2017 will take place from
December 4 to 10 and a wide range of businesses have already pledged many prizes. Andy says: “This year, more businesses are involved and we have a greater value of prizes. This means we will be able to hide more golden tickets. “I remember the excitement last time when people would rush out into Clarkston to hunt for a ticket after reading a clue on social media. It was massively successful in 2016 and I am sure it will be more so this year.” I Love Clarkston BID is an initiative that aims to promote the area as a great place to live, work, shop and socialise. ‘World fIrst’ viCtory for skiing siBlings faItH sCHool seventh as overall male. In the Go Big or Go Home Dryslope competition, Olivia came second and Luke was first in the under-13 category and third in the under-16 category.
The official opening of a unique faith schools’ joint campus took place in Newton Mearns last month.
1st place was the Bearsden Freestyle Ski Team consisting of (from left to right) Chris McCormick, Harris Booth, Luke Burke, Murray Buchan, Flynn Abu-Rajab and Olivia Burke
Two local schoolchildren played an important part in a prestigious UK freestyle ski and snowboard competition triumph.
Bishop John Keenan, of the Diocese of Paisley, and Ephraim Mirvis, who is Britain's Chief Orthodox Rabbi, joined local councillors and the school community for the event. The occasion was marked with religious readings and prayers, and musical performances from pupils.
It opened its doors to pupils at the start of the term in August.
A new concept devised last year by the GB Park and Pipe team and British Ski and Snowboard, the freestyle competition in both skiing and snowboarding is held over the summer, with teams from across Britain performing tricks that they video and submit for judging.

The competition runs for five rounds and Bearsden Ski and Snowboard teams, including Luke and Olivia, worked hard to come up with creative ways to show off their talent. Olivia finished second overall female, while Luke took second overall in the Young Gun (under-15) category and
Neil McGrain, of the Bearsden Ski and Board Club, said: "We were stoked to take both titles in the first year but to do it again this year is fantastic. The teams worked hard for each round and it paid off.” Neil believes that an established youth programme has been key to their success. He said: “Our focus is on challenging skills development at a level appropriate for each athlete.”

The £17 million faith schools' campus, which is home to two primary schools, St Clare's Primary and Calderwood Lodge, as well as a nondenominational nursery class, is believed to be a world first.
St Ninian's High School pupils, brother and sister Luke and Olivia Burke, were two of four skiers in the Bearsden Freestyle Ski Team that won the GB Park and Pipe Freestyle Championship League.
As well as winning the freestyle skiing competition, the Bearsden club also triumphed in the snowboard competition. They did the same last year.

A long-established local netball club for children is keen to recruit a whole new primary 5 section for training and competitions. St Cadoc’s Netball Club is part of St Cadoc’s Youth Club, based in Newton Mearns, and currently has a membership of more than 150 players. The club meets at Eastwood High School Sports Hall, Mearns Castle High School and St Cadoc's Primary School on Tuesday evenings. The netball club has a waiting list for most teams but is looking for new P5 players. Caroline Stevenson, one of the club’s committee members said: “The club is thriving in most areas but we would like to boost
our P5 group. They meet at St Cadoc’s Primary School from 6pm to 7.30pm." St Cadoc's Youth Club was founded some 30 years ago by David Jones for the children of the school to participate in football and netball. Now the club, which has grown beyond the boundaries of the school, includes players from all Renfrewshire schools and beyond. Caroline, whose daughter plays netball with the club, said: “Netball is not only fun but it

also provides a great way to keep girls fit. Playing netball requires you to run around, sprint short distances and to change direction very quickly at times, providing a good cardiovascular workout that improves fitness, strength and agility. “The club is a great way for girls to mix and socialise in a controlled environment. Netball teaches them to work together, improving social and verbal skills.” The club returns to training on January 9 after a break for the Christmas holidays. Gold star for Busby PS
What's Up Doc?
Busby Primary School is delighted to have been awarded a Primary Science Quality Mark at gold level – for the second time.
This month: REWARDING BEST EFFORTS!
The gold quality mark recognises the hard work and dedication of school staff to deliver experiences that promote children's enthusiasm through high quality learning events. These included a residential science experience to Edinburgh and a Star Wars theme STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) week, learning from scientists, engineers, professors, geologists – and even parents – on their areas of expertise. Mark Weir, acting head teacher at Busby PS, said: “As a school we are absolutely delighted to receive this award as recognition for the high quality learning experiences the children engage in at Busby. “STEM plays an important role in equipping our young people to function in a rapidly
developing world and we are pleased that the assessors felt that this aspect was strong at Busby.” The Primary Science Quality Mark vision is for a sustainable programme to enable primary schools to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their science provision. The scheme is supported by professional development led by local experts and enables schools to share good practice.

CONTRACTORS
Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Scottish Health Awards in Edinburgh. Alongside other doctors there were people involved in the NHS in many different ways, including physiotherapists, optometrists, nurses, speech therapists, managers, carers and volunteers. It was uplifting to hear the stories of how people had been recognised for the special attention and care which they had shown to patients. At a time when we are often hearing stories of failures within the NHS, it reminded us that the vast majority of healthcare professionals often give a little of themselves, which makes their work more than
just a job, and makes people feel like a real individual and not just another patient. A few days later the new Scottish GP contract, previously unchanged since 2004, was unveiled. This puts patients at the centre, but will see GPs’ role changing to “Expert Generalists”, possibly having a more handsoff role but using their knowledge and expertise to supervise and support other professionals such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and nurses to ensure people get the most appropriate care from the person best placed to give it. Hopefully as things progress, we will see even more clinicians nominated by grateful patients and colleagues!

Damaged, cracked, split, spalling and eroded sandstone & limestone masonry. Walls, window ems, lintels, Jambs, cornice, copings and plinths. We only use Uthomex to re-face the sandstone and all pointing is only carried out with a lime mix. Stone windowsills add Old-World charm to many buildings. If sills are sandstone, the stone tends to deteriorate with age, exposure to rain, snow and free-and-thaw cycles.
EPDM Roofing System EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in the United States and worldwide. Its two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM is available in both black and white, and is sold in a broad variety of widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60 mils. EPDM can be installed either fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape

The Eastwood Ramblers are looking for more walkers to join them for their three planned walks in December
A local branch of the Ramblers would like to encourage more walkers to join them for a busy programme of walks this winter. The Eastwood Ramblers offer a range of graded walks both locally and further afield in Scotland and including mid-week and weekend outings. This month there are three weekend walks that would suit newcomers to the group. The first is a seven-mile Carmunnock Circular walk on Saturday December 9. The walk starts at the Museum of Scottish Country Life, near East
Kilbride, and visits the preserved 1950s Wester Kittochside Farm, the heritage village of Carmunnock and the Cathkin Braes before returning to the museum's exhibition centre for tea or coffee. Another walk of around six miles takes place on the same day. The Crossford Circuit starts in the South Lanarkshire village and takes in Craignethan Castle via the
Susan Cochrane is the publicity office for the Eastwood Ramblers, which was formed some 30 years ago. She said: “We offer a wide range of walks to suit all abilities of walkers, from coastal and urban routes to more challenging hills and mountains. “During the last year, we have experienced the Scottish countryside at its best, walking in areas as diverse as Pitlochry, Arran, North Berwick, Argyll and the Trossachs. “We are a friendly group and we are always very welcoming to anyone who is interested in walking and would like to give us a try. Non members may walk with us for a maximum of three outings without obligation to join Ramblers.”

HaVE your say oN loCal IssuEs Residents in East Renfrewshire Council are invited to have their say on the issues that affect them locally and to gain a chance to win a cash prizedraw. The Citizens' Panel is your chance to answer a series of questions in a survey about services and policies. The feedback from the panel, which is managed by Engage Scotland, is utilised by the council to make a range of improvements. And everyone who signs up to the Citizens' Panel will be entered into a draw to win one of four £50 prizes. The members of the panel receive two surveys each year with questions about your views on local services and other important issues.
As a member of the Citizens’ Panel you can also choose to take part in occasional consultation events or discussion groups with other panel members. The panel is open to anyone who lives in East Renfrewshire. Current members come from across the area, and from all parts of the community. Don’t neglect your legs – Thermal long-johns, leggings or tights under your trousers/skirt for an automatic heat boost.
I will be sharing some tips that will help you prepare for the colder days ahead, now is the time to think about how we can ‘winterproof’ ourselves.
Eat well – stock up basic foods in the cupboard/ freezer. Hot porridge, healthy soup, beans on toast. All energise metabolism and maintain healthy body temperature.
Some simple steps:
Vaccinate – Flu vaccinations are free on the NHS – safeguard yourself.
Dress warm – Layer up, thin layers can be more effective than a few thick items, layer traps warmth allowing adjustment if you get too warm.
Keep active – gentle exercises/activity around the house can help you warm up and strengthen mobility.
Keep feet warm – feet lose heat. Don’t underestimate the power of the ‘socks-andslippers’ combination.
Any suggestions? I would love to hear from you. Please email: tasnim.rehman@homeinstead. co.uk

£120k for Helping Hands A charity that supports vulnerable members in the community is looking forward to a more secure future thanks to a boost of £120,000. Mearns Kirk Helping Hands (MKHH) has received a series of grants and funding awards that will be used to expand the charity in a number of practical ways, such as employing a project manager and increasing the frequency of meet-ups for the Friendship Group. One of the charity’s trustees, Robert Paton, said of the grants money: “It is not only an excellent result in terms of value but an endorsement of what the volunteers of the charity have achieved to date and where, as a charity, we hope to go in the future.” MKHH was launched last year with the aim of supporting local people who are trying to cope with issues such as social isolation, dementia and grief following the loss of a loved one. The charity developed after Mearns Kirk, as a church, had
been successful in giving support to these target groups over many years. The most recent award of £45,000 came from one of Scotland’s leading charitable organisations, The Robertson Trust. Along with further support secured from the Church of Scotland: Go for It Fund, MKHH will have the benefit of a full-time project manager for the next three years. Other awards include £32,000 from the ASDA Foundation for the purchase of a mini bus.
It’s hoped that MKHH will also be able to expand to support other vulnerable people, such as those recovering from cancer, heart attack/stroke victims and people with mental health issues. Another idea is to create a community café. To find out more about MKHH, whether you know someone who would benefit from support or because you would like to volunteer, see www.mearnskirk. church/groups/mearns-kirkhelping-hands-charity.

And now Grace Cameron, 22, wants to spread the word about the great work of the charity the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Grace joined the boat Moonspray for Leg 3 of Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s Round Britain relay from Oban to Inverness – and again as the sailing boat returned to Largs, in Ayrshire at the end of the ambitious circumnavigation of Britain. Call for MorE Be the first to resPond fostEr HoMEs
A new council campaign is aiming to find foster homes for youngsters aged 16 to 21 in East Renfrewshire. The young people are not ready to live on their own just yet but want to continue with their education or employment in a local and familiar place. Kate Rocks, Chief Social Work Officer for East Renfrewshire, said: "Fostering is incredibly rewarding. Most people imagine they would take in a baby or toddler, but there are young people of all ages that need the love and guidance of a home setting.” Contact www.eastrenfrewshire .gov.uk/foster to find out more.
Family house builder Mactaggart & Mickel Homes’ Building Communities Fund has donated £1000 to Newton Mearns First Responders, which will help to buy much-needed equipment. Pictured from left to right: Liz Hamilton, Land Manager at MacTaggart & Mickel Homes, Bev Brown, Newton Mearns CFR Coordinator, Mark Smith, Community Resilience Facilitator Scottish Ambulance Service, Sarah Williamson, CFR.
The Scottish Ambulance Service is calling for caring residents to take up vital emergency volunteering roles in the community. Newton Mearns Community First Responders are trained to respond to life-threatening emergency calls and, being locally based, can often arrive before ambulance crews, thereby increasing a patient’s chance of survival in the first instance. Bev Brown, Newton Mearns group coordinator, says: “For every minute that passes from the onset of a cardiac arrest the chances of survival will drop by 10 per cent. “Being a volunteer Community First Responder does not replace the need for an ambulance, it
enhances the service already in place. It’s a challenging but hugely rewarding service that provides a direct benefit to the local community.” The opportunities are based in Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Giffnock and Thornliebank. Initial training for Community First Responders (CFRs) takes place over two weekends, when volunteers learn life saving techniques such as CPR, first aid and how to use oxygen delivery and automatic external defibrillators.
After successful completion, CFRs are assigned an experienced buddy who will be on shift with them for a minimum of four weeks. They then have the option to respond “single crewed” or to continue responding as a pair. A CFR will normally be expected to volunteer for 12 hours each month and agree to undertake on-going training once a month. Due to the nature of the work, all volunteers must have access to their own transport while on call or from the group’s base at Parklands Country Club. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years of age. With the festive season upon us, many local people will be keen to find a reliable and affordable taxi service. With this in mind, East Ren Taxis are offering two great deals.
The maximum fare deal, which applies to taxi rides to and from the city centre, is £14 for Newton Mearns addresses, £12.50 for Busby and £12 for Clarkston. Another great offer is a set fare for a taxi to Glasgow Airport. East Ren Taxis believe their £13 rate for trips from
Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby is the most competitive in the area. East Ren Taxis was set up by friends Stephen McFadden and Chris McSkeane in 2016 and has become well-known as a trusted and respected service. The company utilises a free booking app so that customers can book taxis, track of a driver and use a buddy texting system.
Steven added: “The architect's attention to detail was supported by an open and consultative culture that included listening to how pupils wanted to learn and socialise in the new building.” See www.theglasgowacademy.org.uk

You can trust in the best taxi deals
The Clarkston-based company provides “maximum fare” promises for trips to and from Glasgow city centre. This is great for people heading into the city for Christmas parties or shopping.
While the school promotes an “all-round education and development of the whole child”, pre-entrance testing is also key to the school’s ethos. Steven Dignall, Director of Development, said: “The aim is for children to thrive in an environment where high expectations are the norm – and testing plays a vital part in helping to ensure this.”
The school's athletes also excelled with a record 30 internationalists across many sports disciplines and including three each in girls' hockey, rugby and tetrathlon and six in rowing. On top of this, the school’s Saunders Centre – a new centre for science and food technology – won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
