“I adore the kids but they are a handful. The twins are at that delightful tantrum stage. Vicky Kakos hosts a mindfulness meditation session

Laurianne enjoying one of her raw food cakes

Greenbank Garden in Clarkston will host a new retreat for food lovers, combining mindfulness, meditation and the making of raw food. The event is being hosted by a partnership between Vicky Kakos, founder of The Wee Retreat on Glasgow’s southside, and acclaimed raw cake maker Laurianne. Vicky started The Wee Retreat in January last year after discovering the benefits of mindfulness meditation six years ago. She explained: “I wanted to be able to bring ‘wee retreats’ to people on their doorstep so they don’t have to wait till they go on holiday or fi nd money or time to go on a retreat to get some time for themselves. “The idea for the raw food retreat came to me while I was

on one of Laurianne’s raw food workshops. It was thoroughly enjoyable and delicious and I thought if people had a day to themselves to slow down, be mindful and eat, how much more enjoyable and delicious the experience could be. “During the day, meditations will help us to feel present and awaken our senses. We’ll also enjoy a demonstration on how to make an easy raw fruity dessert and share our thoughts and tips on mindfulness and raw food over a homemade three-course vegan, raw lunch.”

Vicky runs a variety of mindfulness retreats, from eight-week beginners’ courses to day and weekend retreats, on her own and in partnership with others. Retreats have previously attracted people aged 18 to 70-plus from all walks of life, including locals and people travelling from further afield. The raw food retreat takes place on February 24 from 10.30am to 3.30pm and costs £65 per person. Tickets can be booked via Eventbrite and further information is available at facebook.com/events/ 395646040837324

Parish School at Mearnskirk: the view in the photo is looking to the north before the realignment of Mearns Road

Andrew Eadie, of Mearns History Group, reveals the story of the old Parish School at Mearnskirk in our continuing history series. There were three types of school in Scotland in the early days of education, parochial, which were run by the church, private and charity. In Mearns, the parochial school was located in the glebe of Mearns Kirk, near where the church manse stands today. In 1792, the First Statistical Account of Scotland revealed that the schoolmaster’s salary was £8-6-8d. He was also paid

30/- annually for acting as Session Clerk of the church. Fees charged for school lessons were also kept by him. Later, in 1842, the Second Statistical Account of Scotland described the schoolroom as “one of the largest and airiest of any in the west of Scotland”. It added: “Mr Jackson, the very able and excellent teacher, has long laboured with much success

At that time there were 103 pupils Mr Jackson’s total annual pay was just over £100, £63 of which came from the school fees. He taught Latin, geography, arithmetic, English grammar, reading and writing. Elementary education became compulsory for all children aged from five to 13 with the passing of the Education (Scotland) Act 1872. Parish schools passed from the responsibility of the Church of Scotland to the newly created School Boards. The new Mearns Public School was opened in September 1876 on the Kilmarnock Road (now Ayr Road) with accommodation for 200 pupils. This later became Mearns Primary School and was finally demolished in 2005. The flats, Scholars Court, have been built on the site.

call out For neW goalies trophies have been won to date. Scotland internationalist David Marshall is also a former pupil, while Zoe McCarney became the academy’s first girl to be capped by Scotland Ladies at an international event. With the start of a new year, the academy hopes to encourage new members from East Renfrewshire, both boys and girls, to train as goalkeepers.

Budding goalkeepers hoping to make a career in the beautiful game are part of Shot Stoppers goalkeeping coaching academy, who are looking for new recruits

A long-running and successful goalkeeping coaching academy is keen to attract new grassroots talent for sessions throughout 2018. Shot Stoppers, which meets on Saturdays at Giffnock North Amateur Athletic Club and Mondays at Petershill Sports Complex in Springburn, has a history dating back almost a quarter of a century. The not-for-profit academy serves Glasgow and the west of Scotland area and all money raised is reinvested to provide kit,

equipment and facilities for the goalkeepers. The academy also claims many successes, with more than 100 boys having stepped up to junior and senior football, including clubs such as Hull City, Cardiff, Norwich and Celtic. Eight goalies went on to become Scottish Youth Cup winners and more than 280

Head Group Coach Stephen Bryceland said: “It would be great to have more grassroots talents from the local area, as well as the people who are prepared to travel from as far aďŹ eld as East Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire north and south, Dumfries & Galloway and West Lothian to train with us. “Our sole philosophy is to give young goalkeepers, male or female, the opportunity to positively develop and enjoy their experience.â€? Two accomplished writers are hosting booksigning events in Newton Mearns this month. James Oswald will celebrate the launch of his latest book, The Gathering Dark, on February 1. Broadcaster Sally Magnusson will bring along her debut novel, The Sealwoman’s Gift, on February 27. The evening events, which are free to attend, are being held at Primavera at the Avenue Shopping Centre in association with Waterstones. Michelle McCabe, centre manager of The Avenue, said: “It is fantastic to have two big named authors returning to The Avenue in 2018 and we are delighted to be working in conjunction with Waterstones and Primavera to deliver these book signings to our customers.”

James’s book is part of the Scottish author’s highly acclaimed Inspector McLean crime thriller series. His first self-published book, Natural Causes, was an overnight success and he is now published by Penguin. Sally Magnusson has written 10 books to date, including bestseller Where Memories Go about her mother’s dementia. The Sealwoman’s Gift, which is based on real events in Iceland in the 17th century, is her first novel. Both signings take place at Primavera from 7pm to 8pm. To reserve your free space or to find out more information please contact The Avenue’s Waterstones store on 0141 616 3933.

Fiddle player and singer Clare Friel has been named Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award 2018. The fiddle player and singer, who lives in Thorntonhall and has strong Donegal connections, is “completely honoured” to be the first person in Scotland to win the award. Clare said: “It’s a huge achievement to be included in such an incredible line up and also to be added to a list of amazing past winners.” Clare performs with her sisters Anna and Sheila in traditional music group The Friel Sisters. She will receive the prestigious award at a ceremony this month.

Local independent councillor David Macdonald hopes to encourage even more residents to join a network of groups to pick up litter. Busby volunteers gathered for the first litter collection at the start of the year and cleared 38 large bags of rubbish from the local area. The initiative is being organised by Cllr Macdonald in association with environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful. There are now plans in place to expand into Clarkston and neighbouring areas.

He explained: “Litter is a national epidemic, not exclusive to East Renfrewshire. It’s a behavioural problem that councils have great diffi culty tackling.

David Macdonald, who lives in Busby, gained support via social media for the first outing and subsequent collections. He also organised bags, litter picker tools from the council and high visibility vests for participants.

David applauded the residents who took part and the ‘wonderful community effort from all involved’. He said Busby was left looking ‘a whole lot better’ once the litter community had been out in force. Children

“If we can come together as a community and beat the problem back to a level that makes people feel uncomfortable littering then I believe we can win the war.”

are also encouraged to get involved, with a parent or guardian. He added: “My plan is to have similar collections throughout the year, throughout the ward. There are plenty of areas requiring attention.” The initiative has been so successful that further groups are being set up and run by residents in Clarkston, Netherlee, Williamwood and Stamperland. Social media pages for new litter communities are quickly gathering support from locals who are keen to keep East Renfrewshire tidy. Practical tasks our home carers are happy to do:

A locally founded charity Fares4Free, which offers free taxi fares for veterans has donated more than £75,000

A charity founded locally has donated a total of more than £75,000 in saved taxi fares to hundreds of grateful Scottish veterans. Over less than two years, Fares4Free has assisted some 200 veterans of all ages across Scotland to reach a variety of destinations that they might otherwise have struggled to get to – and without charging for the journey. The charity was founded by East Renfrewshire taxi driver David Gibson in April 2016. His idea was to partner with taxi companies and drivers to request four donated fares a month per driver. These free fares would be made

available to someone who has served in the Armed Forces, or, where relevant, a family member. For some veterans, they need only a single journey of a few miles to attend a hospital appointment or a meeting with a benefits agency. For others it could be a more regular and long-term schedule, where a regular trip by taxi is their only means of reaching a meeting with mental health experts or other medical supporters.

David said: “The taxi drivers that offer the Fares4Free genuinely want to help. They want to give something back to the veterans and this is their way of helping them. Some will go the extra mile, taking the passengers for a cup of tea or sitting with them at a meeting or appointment. It’s great that the charity can help so many veterans in need.”

Meanwhile, the Rouken Glen Gardening Group meets monthly and is aimed at people with additional support needs, but is open to everyone. They carry out maintenance work in the park’s Wildlife Garden, including planting trees and flowers, weeding, hedge cutting and other general jobs.

This information is then uploaded on to a national database to tie in with data from around the UK. Many people find the volunteer work very rewarding although it can be tiring and a bit mucky. I’m delighted with my new bathroom, couldn’t be happier with the quality and dependability of The Bathroom Company. The whole team are reliable, friendly, honest and efficient. They did what I wanted in the time promised. Couldn’t ask for more.

Great job by the team, on time with no hassle and a perfect new bathroom. Complete layout change with an excellent quality of finish. Would highly recommend, friendly and professional.

Celebrate the month of romance with your little one at a Valentine’s Baby Disco. The event takes place at Carmichael Hall, Eastwood Park, Giffnock, on Saturday February 10 for parents and children under the age of four. The youngsters are invited to come along in their best Valentine’s Disco outfits. They will enjoy taking to the floor to enjoy action songs, party games and pop classics. The disco takes place twice on the same day from 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm. Tickets are £3 (both parent and child require a valid ticket) from www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk or by calling 0141 577 4956.

When parties separate one of the immediate issues to arise can be the question of financial support. Particularly if one party has been financially reliant upon the other. In Scots law, there is an automatic and reciprocal obligation of aliment between civil partners and spouses. Separately, from a parent to their child, or a child accepted by them as one of their family. It is not commonly realised, but this would apply to step parents. The obligation is a duty to provide such financial support as is reasonable in the circumstances, having regard to the needs and resources, as well as the earning capacities

of the parties and generally all of the circumstances. This allows the court to apply a wide discretion to each case. The obligation of aliment between spouses is extinguished upon divorce, in line with the ‘clean break’ approach. Aliment in relation to children is payable until the age of 18, or if under 25 and reasonably and appropriately undergoing instruction at an educational establishment, or training for employment or a trade, profession or vocation. Although still considered child aliment, anyone fitting within this category would require to raise the action themselves against the parent.

draMa to driVe change hAPPy Charity organisation Fast Forward is delivering free drama workshops across Scotland to help youth workers tackle risk-taking behaviour. Sixteen sessions are being held in East Renfrewshire and around the country by the charity, which

promotes health and well-being through education for young people. Freelance community drama practitioner Kat Moir (pictured), of Newton Mearns, will be working alongside two young volunteers to deliver the workshops. Kat is completing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Arts Educations at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and works with a number of organisations, including the Citizens Theatre. Kat said: “We’re touring with new material, designed by the young volunteers, aiming to train youth workers in using drama as a tool to look at risk-taking behaviour.

“We’re really focused on making the training simple for youth workers; so that they can pass on those skills to the young people they work with.” Kat believes it is vital that young people are encouraged to talk about risk-taking behaviours. She added: “However, young people are not always receptive to someone standing in front of a Power Point presentation. Instead, we include them in their learning, taking a peereducation approach and hopefully creating a relaxed learning environment.”

New yeAR It’s worth a short train trip for a chance to celebrate new year all over again – Chinese style. Sunday, February 25 is the date of a special free series of events at the Kelvin Hall, Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove (noon to 4pm), featuring an afternoon of games, dance and play – and those famous Chinese lions – in what promises to be one of the most fun outings of an otherwise still wintry month. Any of these three venues has the makings of a day out at most times of the year, but for this event they’ll also be the staging posts for a cultural event to remember.

The charity has received funding from YouthLink, the national agency for youth work, for the project. The three-hour sessions run until March and can be accessed by anyone who works with young people. See www.fastforward.org.uk.

This month: lOnelineSS in HOSPiTal Based on my personal and recent experience, I was admitted in hospital with a Meningitis Infection. My illness resulted in hospitalisation for over a week, in isolation. The Nurses and Doctors were beyond exceptional, my family were by my side, yet my ‘symptoms of isolation’ still appeared around 72 hours – ‘hours’ as every hour, every minute on a hospital clock is never ending. Usually a cheerful, sociable and confident person I could not help thinking of the other patients in this unusually silent ward. After speaking to nurses, I learned that all my ‘silent neighbours’ were all elderly and indeed very isolated.

Loneliness is not only bad for the mind, leading to mental health problems but also increased risk of physical ill health and reduced illness recovery time.

East Renfrewshire pupils are the first in the UK to have access to an accredited glutenfree catering service.

Gluten-free meals are now freshly prepared each day in a central production unit, based at St Clare’s Primary in Newton Mearns, and specialist meals are delivered in packaging to individual schools. Councillor Paul O’Kane said: “We are delighted to be the fi rst council in the UK to demonstrate our commitment to catering gluten-free and achieve this accreditation. “A huge well done must go to all involved.”

ride the clyde For charity It is estimated there are around 1100 people living with HD in Scotland and up to 6000 potentially at risk. HD is an incurable complex neurological condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. It causes three main groups of symptoms: Changes to thinking processes similar to a type of early onset dementia; loss of muscle control; and involuntary movements that lead to loss of speech and swallowing. The inaugural Ride the Clyde charity cycle ride, organised by the Scottish Huntington's Assocation, is open to all kinds of riders looking for a new challenge

Cyclists of all abilities are being encouraged to sign up for an inaugural charity ride that crosses all 17 bridges over the River Clyde. The Ride the Clyde 30-mile challenge is being organised by the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA), the only charity in the country supporting families with the degenerative neurological condition.

SHA fundraising manager Dougie Peddie said: “We think this is the first time this has ever been done, so it’s a great chance for people to take part in something new and achieve something

previously never attempted on any scale.” The ride, from Dalmarnock to Bowling on March 25, is open to all kinds of riders, from youngsters to serious cyclists. Everyone taking part is asked to raise just £99. The money will be used to fund the SHA’s network of Huntington’s Disease (HD) specialists.

Those impacted by HD may eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24-hour care. It is also hereditary with each child of those diagnosed at 50% risk developing the disease. The inaugural cycle is restricted to 35 riders. To register, contact Dougie on 0141 848 0308 or email dougie.peddie@ hdscotland.org

Build Bridge to Better health New research in Scotland has concluded that playing the card game bridge has a ‘statistically significant’ positive effect on wellbeing’.

LOCAL CLUBS The Bridge Club at Maccabi Youth & Sports Centre has Tuesday classes for beginners, Wednesdays for intermediates and Mondays are for improvers. E: bridge.eastren@gmail.com. Eastwood House Birdge is for beginners to intermediates. The sessions are Mondays 1pm to 4pm and Tuesdays 7.15pm to 10pm. T: 0141 639 2921

The Stirling University study, Individual Wellbeing and Bridge: An Empirical Analysis, reported on the findings of 7,000 bridge players. The scientists were interested in the theory that playing bridge delays the onset and reduces the severity of dementia. The report stated: “Bridge is a mind sport that, even at amateur level, requires much work in terms of developing bridge partnerships and strategies… “Players report high levels of subjective wellbeing, revealing they are optimistic about their future and the opportunities available to them, satisfi ed with the way their lives have turned out, sociable, unencumbered by money concerns and in control of their own lives.”

Another bridge group meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Williamwood High School, Clarkston. E: chrisnesbitt42@ googlemail.com. Now the university teams will address a further hypothesis that playing bridge can directly develop and maintain the neuronal pathways in the brain. Chris Nesbitt is a keen bridge player and a member of Bridge Club at Maccabi, Giffnock. He said: “I do believe that playing bridge is good for your mental health and aids mental agility. I would say it is never too late, or too early to start, with bridge.”

Katie Wolfson, of Eastwood House Bridge group, added that she was once told: “If you play bridge it is an investment in your age.” She added: “Studies over the years have shown that bridge can aid improved mental ability into your senior years. The other great advantages are that it’s a game for all levels and people from all walks of life. It is so sociable and you can play it anywhere.”

Informal Bridge classes are organised by the U3A on the first and third Tuesday of the month at Newton Mearns library. See u3asites.org.uk/ eastrenfrewshire/welcome St Josephs Bridge Club meets in the church hall Clarkston on Wednesday evenings and Friday lunchtimes. See www.bridgewebs.com/ stjosephsclarkston

World Book Day Returns The annual event takes place on March 1 and East Renfrewshire school children are being encouraged to join in nationwide celebrations. Pupils across the region will be given a book token to purchase one of ten special World Book Day titles. A pop-up bookshop will be available at Barrhead Foundry on March 9, for children to spend the book tokens. Scott Simpson, Head of Libraries at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, explained: “Every child in the area will be gifted a £1 book

token at school to purchase one of the ten specially published titles for World Book Day. “We are also bringing a popup Waterstones book store to Barrhead Foundry, where over 1300 pupils can exchange their £1 book token for one of the special titles. “Pupils from East Renfrewshire primary schools will also be

visiting their local libraries to mark this annual celebration of books and reading.” They are also being encouraged to enter the World Book Day competition, which gives schools a chance to win life-changing libraries of books. The competition, with book prizes totaling £20,000, will be judged by Sir Chris Hoy, Joanna Nadin and Clare Elsom who teamed up to write the Flying Fergus book series. To enter, pupils should create a display to show how their school

is flying high with reading, write a short paragraph explaining their entry and send some pictures of their creation. As well as celebrating the joy of reading, this year’s key ‘Share a Story’ theme encourages adults, parents and older siblings to share stories. The search is on to find the nation’s favourite stories in a poll, to give parents and children ideas on what book to read next. Schools and nurseries across East Renfrewshire will also be holding their own activities and events to celebrate World Book Day.
