Russell, of Newton Mearns, launched the charity East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC) as a heartfelt thanks to those who saved his life.

For 10 years I’ve been doing “ whatever I can to raise funds to help others. I have a very strong faith and this is my way of giving back and honouring the donor who saved me.”

“After laser treatment and surgery, I regained fi ve per cent vision in one eye. I am extremely grateful for what others have done for me.

In 2007, the 53-year-old, who is registered blind, underwent a kidney and pancreas double transplant from one donor at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. At the time, it cost the NHS £70,000 and gifted him back his life. Since then he’s shown his appreciation with dogged hard work in fundraising and shining a beacon of hope for others in need. His often lifechanging results have helped groups and clubs, as well as almost 2,000 individuals. Russell said: “I am living with two donated organs, a kidney

Among many good causes, ERGC has given a tank of petrol to help a carers husband and his wife, who has motor neurone disease. The petrol allowed them to drive to a specially adapted caravan for a much-needed break. The charity also helped a teenager with no appropriate clothes for a job interview to be given a make over. Pitch in for your own plot A large allotments site in Eastwood Park is hoping to attract new gardeners to enjoy the benefits of owning their own plot in the city. Eastwood Nursery Allotments Association (ENAA) is a selfmanaged community site with more than 50 active allotment plots, some of which have recently become available.

Renfrewshire. The allotments are located in the formerly derelict gardens of Eastwood House. The charge for full plot membership is £75 per year, £40 for a half-size plot and £20 for a raised bed.

Now the committee that looks after the allotments would like to encourage more people to rent a plot. They are also reaching out to more schools.

Colin Stanage, from ENA, said: “A plot will take a few hours of looking after each week, or less time if people rent a smaller plot. Many people are delighted by the benefits of an allotment, including fantastic exercise and growing veg and fruit that is healthy because no chemicals are allowed on site. There is also a social aspect as

As well as the plots, the allotments have greenhouses, a poly tunnel and the use of communal tools. Some plots also form part of East Renfrewshire Community Food and Growing Network and are in partnership with the Isobel Mair School “Grow Cook and Eat” project in Newton Mearns. The drinking fountain, standing at the entrance to The Avenue Shopping Centre, remembers William Mann of Whitecraigs (1853-1904). Born in East Kilbride to John Mann, a farmer, and Janet Steven, William later married Ann Craig of Eaglesham in 1880.

He started working in Glasgow as a shipbroker and commission merchant and latterly became a managing partner of the ship-owning firm Messrs Bell Brothers & McClelland. In 1893, the ratepayers of Newton Mearns met to hear proposals from William, the recently elected county council representative for the village water supply and drainage schemes.

PlayerS Stage 'all My SoNS' Members of an historic theatre company are busy with final rehearsals as they prepare to present their first production of the year. Giffnock Theatre Players, which was formed some 70 years ago and names Scottish entertainer Rikki Fulton as a founding member, will stage All My Sons from January 17 to 20 at Eastwood Theatre.

David Pearson, a trustee for the Giffnock Theatre Players, says: “This is an entertaining story that is part family drama, part thriller. It promises to be an absorbing and emotion-wrenching experience.”

Written by Arthur Miller and seen in the West End with stars David Suchet and Zoe Wanamaker, All My Sons is a powerful American classic that follows the storyline of a weekend in the garden of the Keller home. At first everything is relaxed, but before long the mood darkens as dark secrets are exposed.

All My Sons is the first of three annual plays performed by Giffnock Theatre Players. There will be two more to look forward to in April and in October. David said: “Over seven decades we have covered everything from Shakespeare to Agatha Christie and including classics, farce and whodunnits. Nothing

is outwith the talents of GTP. For example, in October we presented Noel Coward's comedy Blithe Spirit and in April we’ll perform Whisky Galore. But for now the players are focusing on All My Sons.” There will be four performances of All My Sons from Wednesday January 17 to Saturday January 20 at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are £15 (£13 concessions) with a special offer of two tickets for £25 on Wednesday and Saturday. For tickets call 07518 201756 or 0141 577 4956, or email ticketsgtp@hotmail.co.uk. A resident pair of Mute Swans at award-winning Rouken Glen Park has had a successful year raising an impressive eight cygnets. especially when they are looking after their young. Cygnets typically stay with their parents until they are about six months old.

Despite setting up home in the centre of the pond, the cygnets can be vulnerable to predators, especially foxes, and it is common for the young to be lost in the first weeks and months of their lives. Swans can be fed by the public but only from a list of RSPB-approved food, including lettuce and potatoes, but not bread. The advice is to throw the food into the water and not on the ground. It is best to give the swans some space,

Two busy Rock Choir groups are hoping that more local people will take up singing as part of their New Year’s Resolutions. The Rock Choirs are based in Newton Mearns and Giffnock and they would like to show residents how just one hour of singing each week can reap great rewards for their health and well-being.

“The choirs are relaxed and friendly and everyone is welcome, regardless of prior experience. We do not run auditions, which many people will be pleased to know.

Bid to Heat the Homeless Fascinating Facts NUTELLA INVENTION

A group of kindhearted southsiders brought festive warmth to the streets of Glasgow with a new campaign to Heat the Homeless. Unable to turn a blind eye to people sleeping rough and in sub-zero conditions in the city centre, the friends from Langside decided to team up to make a difference.

and clothing from a generous public.

Stephen, a fitness blogger, said: “While we were encouraged by the efforts of various homeless support organisations, such as The community activists, including Glasgow Winter Night Shelter, we felt that too many people had Tobias Wieland, Stephen little to protect themselves from Morrison and Teresa Inkster, the elements as they slept. We launched an initiative called launched our practical campaign Heat the Homeless, with the aim to hand out sleeping bags to of providing sleeping bags to these vulnerable people.” Glasgow’s rough sleepers. In just a week, the group raised more than £1400 and collected unwanted sleeping bags, blankets

The group was delighted with the success of their initiative, which they shared to great effect on

social media. Stephen said: “The idea touched people’s hearts and thanks to cash donations and the help of outdoor supplier Leith Army Services, we were able to give 25 rough sleepers quality sleeping bags, mats, bivvy bags and rucksacks. “The donations of sleeping bags and other warm kit, which are still coming in, are being forwarded to other groups for distribution to those most in need.” Heat the Homeless also partnered with Glasgow’s Charcoals restaurant owner, Muhammad Sultan, to provide hot meals to people sleeping rough in the city. MORE THAN A COFFEE! Local family cafe offering a range of fresh dishes, speciality coffee and a range of cakes & treats

Success comes through hard work, high quality of products and service – and sometimes a bit of good fortune. When Lauren and Barry Miller were looking for a new career direction earlier this year, they knew they wanted to open a café. The ideal property came up close to their Newton Mearns home. Four months later, Focus Café in Harvie Avenue is thriving and the couple are about to launch a new arm to their business. Lauren said: “We have both worked in catering and hospitality and our dream was to have a café together. It is great having the café on our doorstep.” Focus Café, which also sells and displays local artists’ artwork & photographs, opens from 8am to 3.15pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.

homemade soups. Cakes and treats are another popular choice for many customers. Prices are set to be very competitive including special deals such as a breakfast roll and a tea or coffee for £2 and soup for £1.50. Now the café is launching new menus for external catering. Lauren said: “We hope to cater for outside functions such as office lunches, meetings and parties for adults or children.” To find out more visit Focus Café and see facebook.com/Focuscafe196/

It has breakfast and lunch menus with many cooked-to-order meals, such as omelettes and burgers, as well as Chilli and

January 2018 | What's Up Doc?

Keep safe Hogmanay tips What's Up Doc? With the New Year parties both public and private comes good advice from the Neighbourhood Watch team. First of all they say when you are out try and keep within a group. Keeping with a number of people won’t leave you vulnerable to the types of crimes that are aimed towards individuals and will mean that other people can also keep an eye on you and vice versa. Safety in numbers is an old saying that means always stick together and don’t leave any members of your group behind at anytime. Drink in moderation – It is easier said than done however when you drink more alcohol than usual you can lose your inhibitions and act out of character which in itself could present a dangerous situation. Always take your drink wherever you go to prevent

the chances of it being spiked and keep an eye on anybody offering you a drink to ensure it is not tampered with. Book a taxi or a lift, organising a lift home or booking a taxi before going out will ensure that you get home safely and are not putting yourself in a position where you do not recognise the hire company, driver or area especially if you are out-of-town. Always try and share transport with others. Keep in the spotlight – If you cannot stay in a group for whatever reason for the whole night or day always try to stick to public areas so that people are aware of you and don’t walk down unlit areas that can leave you susceptible to danger. And while you are out, don't leave car keys, ID cards or valuables near windows, doors or letterboxes, where burglars can reach through to steal them. Lock your garden gates and side entrances. Don't leave tools lying around in the garden which could be used to break in.

with Dr Nick Dunn

A neighbour is not

This month: just for Christmas! Following the fun and festivities of Christmas we are now starting a new year. Often a time of reflection for future aims and ambitions, many of us set goals for weight loss, breaking bad habits or getting fitter. Perhaps looking back to the Christmas season should also be included. The spirit of goodwill which sees us behave more like a community and lending a helping hand to those in need could be extended all the year round. As GPs we see patients who suffer from loneliness and neglect due to mental health

problems, addiction, physical frailty and dementia. Fortunately there are many hidden helpers who look in on neighbours especially over Christmas. Sometimes they may be the first to raise the alarm and arrange help when things go wrong. It can be easy to get caught up in things and forget to keep in contact. So consider making a New Year resolution to be a good neighbour all the year round and remember, your neighbour doesn’t just have to be the person next door!

January 2018 | Legal Matters

De-clutter to help local charities Decluttering is not only a great way to tidy - it can be positively therapeutic. There are a surprising number of websites dedicated to the art. Obvious beneficiaries are our local charity shops. They support good causes and the recycling/reuse of items which might otherwise go to landfill. With that in mind the charity shops are suggesting that it might be a good idea to have a post-Christmas clear out to help fund what is often life saving work. Volunteers have told us : “Taking time to de-clutter is a sure way to feel fabulous at the start of any season, especially if you know that you’re making a donation to a worthwhile cause.“

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: PRE-ACTION PROTOCOL Pre-Action Protocol is a procedure for Personal Injury claims in Scotland with a value of up to £25,000. It is a compulsory process for claims following accidents that occurred on or after 28th November 2016. In most cases, it must be adhered to before the raising of a court action. It is also important to be aware that it does not apply to clinical/professional negligence or disease claims. The protocol was introduced following the previous voluntary system that was in place from 2006 and is intended to encourage fair, just and timely settlement of cases without having to

progress the action to court. It is also helpful in narrowing the issues in dispute for matters that do not settle and ultimately do end up in court. The claimant must be represented by a solicitor who uses specific forms and follows a strict timetable. There are nine steps to the protocol and the court has the power to find expenses against a party for any failure to comply with the steps, unless they have just cause, or has unreasonably refused a settlement offer. A settlement offer should also include a figure for the claimant’s expenses, including solicitor fees and outlay.

Blow away the cobwebs of an indulgent and no doubt inactive festive season with a guided walk at award-winning Rouken Glen Park. The Activity Ranger will lead the Winter Walk around the park, pointing out various features of cultural and natural history. The Winter Walk is on Sunday January 14 from 1pm to 3pm. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Rouken Glen Park was voted UK's Best Park at the Fields in Trust annual awards in November 2016 and in the same awards this year it was the only Scottish park to make the short list. Call 0141 638 4121 or roukenglenpark@eastrenfrewshire. gov.uk to find out more.

Senior Savvy with Tasnim Rehman This month:

Recognising the signs and symptoms of Dementia

For many of us, the Festive period marks the annual family reunion. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbours. Have you ever noticed any changes since the last time you met?? Alzheimer and Dementia can go unnoticed for many years and only 41% of people are diagnosed. Why not give your loved ones some ‘extra’ attention this year – signs to look for: 1) Forgetting names of family/friends or everyday objects. 2) Repeating themselves, confusion or losing the conversation. 3) Recalling the past but struggling with the present. 4) Confusion with time and place, even in a familiar environment. 5) Feeling embarrassed, anxious, depressed, fearful or even angry about their forgetfulness. 6) Withdrawing from talking, reading, writing or difficulty in participating in familiar festive activities. 7) Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. 8) Changes in moods and personality especially with close relations or when out of their comfort zones. Dementia affects everyone in different ways, if any of the signs above concern you then please speak to other family members too – seek support from the GP or contact Home Instead Senior Care for further advice and information.

Club celebrates Burns selected invitees, including any female performers, to have dinner in the hotel restaurant on the night of the club’s supper. hosts a popular Ladies Night ceilidh each November. Part of the club’s constitution states that an objective is to provide books and certificates to local schools in recognition of the children who take part and excel in an annual Scots Verse Competition. The club’s website is www.eagleshamburnsclub.co.uk

Eaglesham Burns Club was founded in 2007 and has a maximum membership of 80 members, all of whom live within the parish boundary.

As tradition holds, the life and works of acclaimed Scottish bard Robert Burns will be celebrated on his birthday later this month. In Eaglesham, a tradition of more than a decade will see the Eglinton Arms Hotel play host to a special supper of the local Burns Club on Friday January 26, the day after the official Burns’ Night. The Eaglesham Burns Club event will be held for the 11th time in a time-honoured format and attended by more than 100 people. Ian Lightbody, the club secretary and a founding

member, said: “As well as the usual traditions of a Burns supper, there are two slots of community singing and music by guest artistes. We also have a recital of some of the poetry of Burns. Where possible we encourage club members to perform.” While the supper is attended only by men, another tradition is for the president’s wife and

Ian said: “We all look forward to the Burns Supper each year and we are very well supported by the Eglinton Arms. This is where we have held all of our events. “The names of our principal speakers, as well as the club presidents, are on a roll of honour board in the entrance to the hotel.” Each year, the club also organises a spring trip to a place that has some significant connection to Robert Burns and

Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. It was very clear from start to finish that Stephen is passionate about his job, the quality of workmanship is first class and we have no hesitation in recommending this company. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Quibell (Shandon) “Delighted with our new bathroom.Excellent job throughout from start to finish by a great hard working team.” Scott and Fiona Holt (Bearsden) “Stevie has done two bathrooms for me, a small en suite shower room and a guest bathroom. They presented different challenges but both were completed on time, on budget and beautifully finished. It was important to

me to have someone I could trust in my home when I was at work. The guys just got on with things, dealt with the unexpected when it arose and always left my house tidy and clean for me to come home to. What more could you want?” Dr . Jennifer Brown (Craigton) “Stevie and his team did a wonderful job of transforming our old, tired bathroom into a beautiful new space. Stevie and his team worked extremely hard to get the majority of the upheaval done while we were on holiday, minimising disruption to us. Stevie takes great pride in his work and that is evident in the end result. He was quick to respond to any snags and we are very happy with the final result. Thankyou!” Mr and Mrs Timar (Killearn)

JENNIFER NETS NEW JOB Social media proved to be the key to a new life and work in Newton Mearns – for a young woman living more than 1500 miles away. Jennifer Zara, 22, had been struggling to find a job in her local city of Olbia, on the northeast coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. She turned to using Facebook for research for Italian restaurants with possible vacancies and ended up tracing a path to Glasgow, then Newton Mearns and then to one of the

Jennifer said that she was enjoying the work and liked life in the Mearns. She said: “There was no work for me in Olbia and I liked the idea of travel. Facebook led me to Glasgow and then to Nonna Gina’s. It has worked out very well.”
