Liz Grant, from Newton Mearns, is providing specialist massage therapy to cancer patients
The East Renfrewshire Business Awards 2018 are now open for entry. Winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony at the Busby Hotel on June 5, hosted by STV’s Jennifer Reoch.
Liz Grant, a retired pharmacist, offers her time and expertise for free to treat cancer patients in their homes in her local community and in Barrhead. She also gives up half a day each week to massage terminally ill patients who are cared for by MacMillan Cancer charity. Liz said: “When I was working as a public health pharmacist I was involved with a charity that offered support to people with oral cancer. I saw, through that, what a difference massage could have for patients. Now I am semiretired I want to be able to help other people in my spare time.” Liz has qualified as a Swedish massage therapist and has
also completed a course that is focused on massage treatment for people with cancer. The benefits of massage include helping to improve relaxation and sleep, as well as reduced anxiety and stress. Liz said: “Sometimes all a patient wants is gentle touch therapy for reassurance and relaxation benefits or they will ask for a massage in a certain area of the body that is troubling them. I have

been trained to know how to massage cancer patients. “I fi nd the process very rewarding because you can immediately see the benefi ts to people who are ill.” Liz does ask for a donation from patients towards her travel cost and the massage oils, but this is usually dependent on their means to pay. new sTep for fooTballers In the local area, East Renfrewshire Culture & Leisure runs indoor Walking Football sessions weekly at Mearns Primary School on Tuesdays, from 7pm to 8.30pm, and Fridays at Barrhead Foundry, from 1pm to 2pm. Peter Dunn is the Football Development Co-ordinator (club and coach) at ER Culture and Leisure. He said: “The great thing about walking football is that no previous playing experience is required and the sport is open to all levels of fitness.”
The new Walking Football Scotland group has been set up with the Scottish FA to help develop this fast growing sport
A fast expanding network of walking football groups has prompted the creation of a national support and coordination group for the sport. The new Walking Football Scotland organisation has been developed as part of Scottish FA and will help to standardise the many interested parties, while also sharing good practice, exchanging ideas and developing the sport for more senior players. Walking football offers a more inclusive derivative of the sport
and is generally played by people over the age of 55 and well into their more senior years. The game has many health benefits, both physical and mental, and aids social isolation and community cohesion. Walking football is also a good fit with many of the Scottish Government’s key physical activity targets.
One keen player in East Renfrewshire is 70-year-old Jim McQuade. He said: “After a quadruple bypass 18 months ago I could not play five aside football anymore. “I took up walking football instead and it has been a great benefit to me because it allows to me to carry on with football but in a fun and relaxed environment. I play with a great bunch of guys and I love it.”

Age Concern Eastwood is delighted to have taken delivery of a new minibus to assist in transporting members to social events. The Ford Transit bus was partly funded by grants from the East Renfrewshire Renewable Energy Fund and The Hugh Fraser Foundation. Age Concern use minibuses to take members from their homes to social lunch clubs, which are held at Albertslund Hall, Westacres, Woodfarm Pavilion and at the village hall in Eaglesham. When not in use, the minibuses are available to other local registered charities that meet the necessary criteria.
Neil McNeill, chairman of Age Concern Eastwood, said: “It is a real bonus to have a new minibus to help with our transport needs.” The group is also keen to hear from volunteers who would be able to spare some time to help at the social lunch clubs, drive the minibuses, or assist in the office based in Eastwood Park. Neil said: “If you would like to help the older people in the community please do consider volunteering. We can be flexible about the time you can give and we would be very grateful for the help.”

final biG aCT in 70Th Year Budding actors from a popular southside theatre group are busy rehearsing for the final production of their 70th birthday season. The Giffnock Theatre Players (GTP), which have presented three plays every year for the past seven decades, are preparing for the comedydrama, Steel Magnolias, by American playwright Robert Harling. Many people will recall the hugely successful movie version of Steel Magnolias starring Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton. GTP member David Pearson says: “The story is of the bond a group of women share in a Southern community. “The author based it on events occurring within his own family and the title suggests the capacity of these women to display, in times of diffi culty, both the delicacy and beauty of fl owers and the toughness and resilience of steel."
David acknowledges the potentially sombre subject matter but feels that the script reflects the author's intention to include the way the characters used humour and lighthearted conversations to cope with the seriousness of the underlying situations. Instead of performing at the usual location of Eastwood Theatre, GTP will put on the production at Clarkston Hall on Friday April 20 at 7.30pm and on Saturday April 21 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 and can be purchased by calling 07518 201756 or by emailing tickets-gtp@hotmail. co.uk
The last production was the American classic drama, All My Sons, by Arthur Miller, which played to very appreciative audiences who braved the snowy conditions in mid-January.
See www.giffnocktheatre players.com for more information about the theatre group.

Seven lucky scouts have been chosen to attend the World Scout Jamboree 2018 in West Virginia. Back row, left to right: Adam Thomson (15); Mark Thomson (12); Ross Obrien (13); Ruari Campbell (14). Front, left to right: Amy Campbell (12), Eilidh Mitchell-Luker (13) and Matthew Carlin (15)
Seven scouts from Clarkston and Busby will travel to West Virginia after being selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree 2018. The schoolchildren, aged between 12 and 15, from the 121st Clarkston Glasgow Scout Group will join 40,000 guides and scouts from all over the world. The successful group, comprising two girls and five boys, was delighted when they found out they have passed the selection process.
Proud mum Catherine Thomson, of Busby, has two children, Mark and Adam, in the selected group. She said: “This will be an adventure beyond anything we can ever imagine. It will last two weeks on camp and the kids will have a big city experience, either New York or Washington, and hosted hospitality, hopefully in Canada.
The 24th World Jamboree will take place at The Summit Betchel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia in July 2019.
“As well as being a fantastic adventure with white water rafting, zip lines, climbing and mountain biking, they will forge
friendships from around the world and join the Jamboree spirit of promoting peace, friendship, leadership and acknowledging our beliefs.” Parents and jamboree participants have already started fundraising by hosting a family quiz night and completing some supermarket bag packing shifts. On March 25, they will be car washing at the Scout Hall at Aidans Brae in Clarkston to raise more money. You can pop along with your car between noon and 4pm. The group is also hoping local shops and business owners will support them with donations and raffle prizes. Any local businesses that can support the scouts should contact the Scout group directly. mike’s 100 nesT ChallenGe Inspired by my experiences, I decided I wanted to give something back to some of the charities that do such great conservation work. So, the 100 Nest Box Challenge was born.” Michael has been selling his nest boxes on his dedicated nature website, mikesnature.com, where he displays his amateur wildlife photography, too.
We hope you are enjoying the your Newton Mearns, Clarkston and Busby Community Magazine. The magazine is delivered free of charge to homes in your area and we aim to make it useful, informative and engaging. We want to write local news about clubs, groups, societies and events in each community, and also nearby. If you have a story that you would like to share with us or an event in the coming months, please do tell us. We will write an article about your news or add the event to our monthly listings. Please contact us at info@ thecommunitymagazine.co.uk
Clarkston pupil Michael Sinclair has raised more than £950 for wildlife charities by selling his handmade bird nest boxes
Clarkston school pupil Michael Sinclair has been selling handmade birds’ nests to raise money for three important wildlife charities The 13-year-old Williamwood High School pupil uses his pocket money for materials and collects materials with his dad. Michael builds the nests from scratch and sells them to raise money for the British Trust for Ornothology, Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
His aim is to sell 100 nest boxes and so far he has raised more than £1,000. He will split the funds evenly between his chosen charities. Michael said: “Last year, I visited many fantastic wildlife reserves across the UK, as well as taking part in the British Trust for Ornothology Bird Camp in May.
12 | To advertise, call Debbie now on 0141 433 8140
He has also set up a Crowdfunding page and puts the additional funds towards materials for more nest boxes, which he has given free of charge to local schools, community organisations and parks. He said: “Many of the nest boxes I made have been bought by people in the local area. I hope it encourages them to take a greater interest in supporting wildlife.” Michael created a variety of nest box types to suit different types of birds, including coal tits, blue tits, tree sparrows and robins and sold them for a minimum donation of £10. Fitness fans in East Renfrewshire can now sign up for this year’s Run the Blades, a unique series of races held within Whitelee Wind Farm. More than 1000 runners are expected to tackle the terrain, which incorporates three distances – a 10K, half marathon and 50k ultramarathon – making the event accessible to runners of all fitness and experience levels. This year, organisers are introducing the Family Mile and a lively village event offering street food vendors, artisan coffee roasters and live music. Rebecca Fennell, Marketing Coordinator at Breaking Strain Events, said: “Run the Blades started in 2015, with a 40-strong field taking to the trails and turbines of Whitelee Wind Farm.
“Fast forward to 2018 and we’re proud to see the event move into its fourth year running (pun intended). With recognition and support from Scottish Power Renewables and Event Scotland this year, we’re bringing epic new elements to the site. “We must give credit where credit is due to the awesome Run the Blades community, which retains familiar faces and welcomes new ones each year.” Run the Blades takes place on Friday July 20 and Saturday July 21. Find out more and sign up at: www.breakingstrain.co.uk/ run-the-blades
Having survived the winter, many of you will be looking ahead to your summer holidays and possibly booking trips to exotic places such as Blackpool or Devon! The more adventurous may even be going abroad! It’s always nice to bring back some souvenirs, but there are some which are best avoided. I am thinking about dangerous infections such as typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis or even tuberculosis, which can be a risk in certain parts of the world. The best way to avoid these things is first to make sure your normal vaccinations are up to date. You can check this with your Practice Nurse.
These would include your diphtheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid. Depending on where you are travelling you may require to pay for specific jabs such as yellow fever, TB, rabies, meningitis or encephalitis. Your Practice may provide a travel service or you could attend a travel clinic who can advise what you need depending on where and when you are travelling, the type of holiday and your age and general state of health. It is important to plan well ahead, and allow at least 8 weeks to get things organised. That way you can hopefully bring back the nice souvenirs, and avoid the nasty ones!

This month: GUARDIANSHIP FOR YOUR CHILD Traditionally, parents have asked family or friends to act as godparents to their child. A godparent will usually have an active role in the child’s life and are specifically chosen to take over the care of a child in the event of the parent’s death; to become their guardian. In the event you wish for this role to be taken literally then it is important that this appointment is formalised in writing.
An appointment of a guardian will come into effect in the event of the parent’s death and will continue until the child reaches 18. Although, between 16 and 18 the role is limited to providing guidance. A guardian is essentially a parental substitute and will have full parental rights and responsibilities in relation to the child. There should, therefore, be serious consideration given as to who should take on that role.
This can be done by detailing The role of guardian can be your wishes in your will or, revoked by you if you wish alternatively, by having a and, again, this should be done specific document drafted in writing. fooTbal leGends VICTorIA’s New GaTher for Gala dinner YogA ClAss
Busby resident Victoria Harris is bringing a new yoga class to the area. Victoria practised yoga for more than 10 years and last year trained with the Classical Yoga School to become a qualified teacher.
Ally McCoist and Neil Lennon share a joke at a recent St Cadoc's Youth Club fundraising evening
Sports stars were out in force to support a Newton Mearn’s youth club gala dinner. Host Tam Cowan (inset) was joined on stage by Bertie Auld, Ally McCoist, Neil Lennon and a host of football stars to help St Cadoc’s Youth Club with fundraising efforts. A fleet of buses took guests to a Champagne Reception at the Grand Central Hotel and were welcomed by Gordon Duncan, host of Clyde Super Scoreboard.
She has been assisting at Merchant City Yoga and is excited to start her own class in Busby.
legend Bertie Auld kicked the evening off in style with a song. “Brilliant host Tam Cowan waived his fee for charity for the fi fth year in a row. He was joined on stage by an array of special guests and the White band blew away the stage with a succession of great songs.
“We want to thank everyone A spokesperson said: “This was a who donated great prizes, truly fantastic night raising large organised, attended or supported the event.” sums for worthy causes. Celtic
The amount raised has still to be finalised but organisers hope to achieve last year’s £25,000 total. The funds from the Charity Gala are split between several charities including the Schiehallion Appeal, Radio Clyde’s Cash for Kids and Scottish Action for Refugees.
Victoria said: “It will be an Ashtanga-inspired class with an emphasis on taking things at your own pace. I will include the all-important savasana relaxation at the end. “People should expect to feel energised and refreshed.” Classes run at Dance Inc Studios on Sunday mornings at 9.30am. A Newton Mearns photography studio is offering an alternative birthday party experience for kids who love the limelight. Photogenic Parties provides a professional photoshoot experience, including a mini makeover or crafts activity and a group photograph keepsake. Photographer Marie Ross said: “A family friend gave me the idea when she heard I was a photographer. In Scotland 2013, legislation was passed allowing care recipients to ‘directly choose’ who would provide their care. What does this mean? Once a person has been assessed by their local Council to receive free personal care at home, four options are available to them: Option 1 – The council pays YOU the money directly and you spend this money with a private provider to deliver a personalised care package.
Option 2 – You choose the support AND care provider and the Council will pay on your behalf. Option 3 – The Council will choose and pay for the support directly. Option 4 – a combination of the above. Increasingly individuals want to choose and control their own care packages. This puts clients in the driving seat allowing them to have the care delivered at a time that suits them and by carers who are ‘matched-up’ to them. CallinG all keen CrafTers Currently, participant numbers vary between four and ten people at each meet up, with people of various ages attending to work on their own knitting and crocheting projects. Laura said: “It would be lovely to have more people joining us. Creating local connections around a shared interest can only be a good thing for us and for our community.” The group wants to share their skills and are happy to teach the basics of knitting or crochet to anyone who turns up. The Clarkston Crafters, launched last year by Laura Worku, are keen to welcome new members
A local crafts group is keen to welcome new members to join them for monthly meetings to brush up on knitting and crocheting skills. Clarkston Crafters was launched last year by Laura Worku, who has found the knitting and crocheting circle a great way to make new friends and tackle stress. The group alternates meetings between a Sunday afternoon
in Costa Coffee and a Monday evening in the Overlee in Clarkston to allow more flexibility for participants. Laura said: “I’ve been part of an online crochet community for a couple of years and I have
loved sharing pattern ideas, tips, techniques and the love of all things yarn. I wanted to see if I could recreate that locally and meet fellow crafters. “I’m so glad I did as I’ve made some great new local friends and I’ve found crochet and knitting to be a good way of slowing down from a busy life. This is a benefit for our mental health and well-being.”
Laura added: “We are also keen to explore what we could do as a group, perhaps charity projects and local art projects for us and our community.” You can follow Clarkston Crafters on Facebook and attend their next meeting on Monday March 5 at 7.30pm at The Overlee in Clarkston. Laura said: "Just look for a group of people knitting or crocheting. Hopefully, you’ll be hooked…”

new arT Classes for kids New bAr AND Clarkston art specialist
bIsTro oN The MeNu
Caroline Bennett has launched The Wee Art Studio from her home to teach primary school pupils in the area. The qualified art, nurture and learning support teacher initially turned her garage into a space for her own work before deciding it would be the perfect teaching space. Caroline launched the classes with a free drop-in comic strip and pop art themed event and already has plans to expand the programme.
Clarkston is set to welcome a new bar and bistro to Busby Road. The venue, at the site of the former Beanscene, is being brought by the team behind Loks in Newlands.
Caroline Bennett has launched The Wee Art Studio and will cater for local primary school pupils
Loks has a thriving function suite that hosts regular cabaret, disco nights and private functions.
She said: “Through my own practice, I have witnessed that children who receive regular input from a specialist art teacher improve their co-ordination and fine motor skills. They also have enhanced creativity and problemsolving skills, which can build self-confi dence.”
She said: “I am amazed at the interest there has been already, just through social media and word of mouth. The team plan to bring quality food and drink and live music to the area when they open the new venue by mid-summer, pending planning approval. Loks manager Phillip Reilly said: “Nothing like this has been done before in Clarkston. It’s something new and exciting and we’re confi dent it’s what the locals have been looking for.” "Clarkston is a hub for several big communities, including Netherlee, Stamperland, Busby and a big chunk of Giffnock, as well as the town itself and it’s crying out for a good local pub."

Ideas for new boardwalk
A series of creative community events and workshops are helping to create a new boardwalk between Newton Mearns and Barrhead. Schools, community groups and residents have been exploring ideas to shape what the new boardwalk at Balgray Reservoir will look like. A series of consultation events, interactive walks at the reservoir and art workshops focused on several creative themes relating to history, landscape and functionality. The events are being run by East Renfrewshire Council’s appointed
architects Erz Ltd in collaboration with artists Bespoke Atelier and poet Ken Cockburn. Bespoke said: “Connecting and collaborating with the local community is an integral part of our design process. We really enjoyed meeting and working with everyone involved. We look forward to revealing how the project has developed at the forthcoming exhibition.”
Participants created short poems including words inspired by the reservoir and explored the rich textile history surrounding Balgray reservoir through block printing.
around Balgray Reservoir, as well as improved walking and cycling connections in the area.
The new boardwalk at Balgray Reservoir within Dams to Darnley Country Park has been funded by Glasgow City Region City Deal with support from Sustrans Community Links, which provides grant funding to make it easier for people to walk and cycle. Existing paths will be joined to create a continuous 4km walking and cycling circuit

The final boardwalk design will be informed by the community input, creating a distinctive outdoor space to explore East Renfrewshire and is expected to be complete by 2020. An exhibition displaying the creative ideas will be scheduled for the end of March/April 2018. Look out for details on East Renfrewshire Council and Dams to Darnley’s social media pages.
HAVE A GO!
Grow your own spuds in a container. This is a magical process and practical too! Fill the container 4 inches deep with compost. Put in potatoes that have eyes in them, pointing upwards, and space about 5 - 7 inches apart. Cover them with 3 inches of moist soil. As the shoots grow continue to add further layers of compost until you reach just near the top of the container. Water and feed. The first tubers will be ready to enjoy soon after the plants flower. Simply put your hand in and rummage!

GreaT wall ChariTY Trek
From left to right: Alison Trant, Laura Barley, Lauren Griffi ths, Emma Ghosh (Laura's cousin) take a quick photo opportunity during their charity trek to the Great Wall of China, which has raised more than £22,500
Brave Laura Barley paid tribute to her late husband with a charity trek to the Great Wall of China to raise money for Meningitis Now. Laura took on the challenge with three of her closest friends to raise money and awareness of meningitis and prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak that she and her son, three-year-old Lucas, have endured. The group has raised more than £22,500 so far for Meningitis
Now, in memory of Laura’s husband Euan. Laura, of Newton Mearns, said: “My husband contracted meningitis in May 2016 and sadly succumbed to it. My son was only one at the time and has tragically been left to grow up without his daddy.”
In the heart of Glasgow’s Southside
Euan had grown up in the Far East and they had discussed going to Great Wall together. So when Laura was searching for fundraising ideas and came across the trek, she knew it was the right one for her. Laura said: “It looked like quite a difficult but a relevant one for me. I suggested the idea to one of my best friends. Another best friend and my cousin then volunteered to join our team. I am so blessed because everyone wanted to support me and the cause.”
The team took part in a fi ve-day trek and hung Chinese knots on the penultimate day, in memory of Euan. Laura said: “We trekked less populated areas in addition to the more touristy areas.” Laura also wants to raise awareness of the symptoms of meningitis. She added: “I still wonder if I had been more aware of the symptoms then I could have recognised them and got him some medical help sooner. Maybe things could have turned out differently.” For more information visit see www.meningitisnow.org

whiCh ChariTY is Yours? is easily the most inclusive and allows many who couldn’t manage the longer hikes to have a go. The Mighty Stride once again starts from Hampden Park, then heads through the south side, into Glasgow Green and along the Clyde past the Finnieston Crane and Riverside Museum, through Yoker on to the cycle path to Clydebank.
KilTWalK CHallenGe: The Kiltwalk takes place on 29th April with options of 23 and 14 miles
There is a lengthy queue of laudable causes vying for your attention if you’re thinking of taking part in this year’s Kiltwalk spectacular – which for this area ends in Balloch - and they all deserve support. Most people ultimately choose a cause which has some personal connection through friends or family, while for some it might seem an idea to support one of the charities that enjoys a less high profile than the ones we hear about regularly.
Either way this massive fundraiser is solid gold to organisations which rely on public cash to function to full effect, and everyone’s contribution is worthwhile. The big day is April 29, so anyone taking part can start
