As I write this, we’re getting a muchneeded (and rare) deluge of rain, and hopefully more to come throughout the week. While we all know that Texas sum mers can be hot and dry, by all accounts this year has been exceptionally hot and dry. In fact, through July, this year has set the record for the most record high temperature days with 18 days setting a new mark – the closest to that was back in 1925 when 11 records were set! June alone had nine record highs, so basically one out of every three days was an all-time record high. The average July temperature (99.4) this year was seven degrees higher than the historical average of 92.5! Combine that sweltering heat with just over seven inches of rain through the first seven months (62% less than average for the first seven months), exceptionally windy and arid conditions and you’ve got a recipe for the extraordinary drought we’re experiencing (which Shane Reynolds takes a deeper dive into later in this issue). All of these factors make the incredible conditioning that the golf course is in, even that much more impressive thanks to the hard work and long hours by Direc tor of Agronomy, Stu Rowland, and his entire Clubs Agronomy team. The Clubs Agronomy team has relentlessly overcome the elements to keep the greens in exceptional condition given the circumstances. Yes, the zoysia fairways and particularly edges of the course show the signs of this exceptional drought, but zoysia is built to handle droughts. The tan turf coloration is partly a sign of it going into a dormant-like state to preserve its energy when water is limited, but if you’ve been around here long enough you’ve seen these golden areas pop right back out to green just days after we get some heavy rains like we’re receiving now. The reality is that with the high heat, low humidity and high winds we ex perienced in July, irrigation simply can’t keep up to replace what Mother Nand ature can provide for the turf. So the next time you’re out enjoying the golf course and see any of the crews hand watering or misting turf, give them a pat on the back because they take great pride in the hard work they’ve put in to ensure the best possible playing conditions. Thankfully we’re within weeks of getting some decreasing temperatures and then moving into the best part of the year on the Ranch: Fall! Until then stay cool and hydrated and enjoy this issue of Cordillera Ranch Living !

“When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made one as well as the other.” Ecclesi astes 7:14. I have to remind myself of this daily as it is so easy to forget the hard times are just as important as the easy times. Knowing that the God of the mountain is the same God of the valley seems to make the hard times smaller.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? In the summer, my son and I spend our days by the water whether it be a pool, a river or the ocean. We are also big campers! Any time we get the chance to go, we always jump on it. Making sure that my family maintains that balance between school, work and family time has always been a priority and it is also why I love Cordillera so much. Taking the opportunity to get out, recharge and get grounded again is a must in my family.

I heard about this position while working at the Visitor Center with Pasadera Builders, a Preferred Builder on the Ranch. While helping clients build their beautiful homes in Di Lusso Villas, I fell in love with the community and the members. This ended up driving my desire to come to The Clubs and when learning about what this position entailed, it sounded like an answer to a prayer. It was amazing how much it already felt like family here.

WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR THE CLUBS?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? Our members by far are the most wonderful part of Cordillera Ranch. Getting to know each of the members, hearing about their travel, their adventures, how they find their happiness and how they have overcome struggles has really set this apart from any where I have experienced. Therefore, it has been so rewarding and continues my drive to make members’ experiences here even bet ter, either with awesome service, a preset dining table for a surprise birthday or an extra trinket in a Lodging room — anything we can do to make your stay unforgettable. It is always fun to do things extra for nice people and Cordillera is in no way short on that.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Energetic, dependable and spirited.

WHAT WOULD YOUR LAST MEAL BE? CHEESECAKE! Especially the kind with the Oreo crust. Yum!

AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? Without a doubt I wanted to be both an artist and an elemen tary school teacher. That was my absolute dream! However, my dream was NOT to be an art teacher. The two in no way would ever overlap, although I don’t quite know the reason.

HOMETOWN: HOW DID YOU BECOME EMPLOYED AT THE CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH?

FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO?

While this has been the first club I have worked at, I do feel that previous experience as well as some amazing mentors have helped give me the tools to succeed. Making sure that clients feel comfortable and at home have always been a priority for me. A few years ago, I was living in Houston and was the Busi ness Manager for two Montessori Schools. This community taught me a truly important lesson of how much your community impacts your success in all areas of your life.

WHICH SUPER POWER WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE? So many choices! Should I just choose super strength so I could intimidate and crush all of my foes; better yet have an inner Hulk? Or maybe the ability to become invisible so I could pull amazing pranks on all of my coworkers? I think I would have to channel my inner Wonder Woman though, with the ability to fly and have incredible strength. Not to mention her highly fashion able and functional accessories? Yes, please!

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO HAPPINESS? There is a secret? If anyone has this information, my contact in formation is above — please give me a call and we can discuss! I do believe that happiness comes by faith and the decision to choose joy and contentment continuously. I know I constantly remind my team on hard days to choose joy day by day. If that seems impossible, then hour by hour and if even then, choose moment by moment. When life gives you lemons, slice them up and find some Codigo!

IDIVINGNTOLIFE AT RANCHCORDILLERA THE NAVARRETE FAMILY By Jenny Jurica :: Photography by David Teran

22 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

Both Isaiah and Lindsey grew up in West Texas — Lindsey in Odessa and Isaiah in nearby McCamey. While Lindsey spent her whole life in Odessa up until the move to Boerne in 2017, Isaiah felt the entrepreneurial call early on and, after completing his degree from McMurry University in Abilene, he headed overseas to study international business in both London and Paris.

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 23

The Navarrete family, that’s who! right in the deep end and pursue her, or else he’d regret it for the rest of his life.

This zest for life is a guiding force for most aspects of the Navarrete family’s life. From the entrepreneurial spirit that has afforded both Isaiah and Lindsey huge professional successes, to the decision to uproot their family from their home in West Texas and move to Boerne, the Navarrete family lives life with fewSpeakingregrets. of living with no regrets…when Isaiah first saw Lind sey at a restaurant where she was working in the early 2000s, he felt an immediate attraction and knew that he needed to jump What kind of a family gets dressed up for a professional photo shoot — in full hair and makeup — only to suggest to the photographer that they should jump into the pool in the middle of the shoot?

“I told a friend of mine that I was going to marry that girl,” remembers Isaiah of the night he first saw Lindsey.

“‘Sure, why not?’ This statement pretty much sums up our family,” said Lindsey Navarrete of herself, her husband, Isaiah, and their two children, 14-year-old Julian and 12-year-old Ella Grace, regarding the family’s free-spirited spontaneity.

While it took several months before Lindsey and Isaiah were able to connect, once they began dating, the chemistry was palpable and, 17 years later, their journey continues.

Today, Lindsey is the owner of Plush Salon, located next to the Bergheim Meat Market. It’s there that, along with her co-stylist, Katie, Lindsey has introduced her talents in hair and makeup to a new population of clients. “I have the best job,” said Lindsey. “Who doesn’t love hair and makeup? It’s fun to make people happy and see them smile. You can do so much for somebody.”

To date, Isaiah, who began his career in banking, has started, grown and sold several successful businesses, including a factoring company (which provides capital for companies by purchasing their invoic es). His most recent business endeavor is in the booming home building industry.

This ambition and tenacity helped Isaiah’s parents to start their own business, which, 40 years later, is still going strong.

“I always knew that I wanted to be a business owner. Since I was a young man, my family has always raised me to think for and to bet on myself,” said Isaiah.

Once the Navarrete family made the move to Boerne, Lindsey continued see ing clients at her Midland salon, traveling back to West Texas every five weeks in order to take care of her clients — many of whom she had for 15 years. The pan demic, however, was the catalyst to finally give up the Midland salon and focus on building a new life and a new career in the Boerne area.

But Isaiah isn’t the only one in the family with a hard-working and committed entrepreneurial spirit. Lindsey has been working in the cosmetology industry for 20 years and has owned two salons during this time. Her first was a successful salon in Midland that was open for 11 years.

24 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

Isaiah’s drive and business acumen undoubtedly came from his parents. “My father was an immigrant from Mexico who came from nothing,” said Isaiah. “He came to the United States at a very young age and, although he had no schooling, he is smart and has a very strong work ethic.”

“With some good luck and with good people, we have been able to grow and still keep our sanity,” said Isaiah of their recent success in home building.

“We were like family at the salon. I had the same employees from the time we opened until the salon closed,” said Lindsey.

Being natives of West Texas, the Navarretes were enchanted by the rivers that flow in the area, as well as the atmosphere and natural beauty of Kendall County. In short order, they scheduled a tour of Cordillera Ranch, found their lot and by June of 2017 had officially moved to Boerne. “We looked at a lot of places before deciding on Cordillera Ranch,” said Isaiah. “After seeing them all, there is just nothing like our neighborhood. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. Now, everyone may not see eye to eye on many areas of this crazy world, but everyone we’ve met here seems to have the same morals and principles.”

The Navarrete family has no regrets about their decision to move to Boerne and relishes every day spent at their home in Cordillera Ranch. It is here that they have begun a new chapter of their lives and can’t wait to see what happens next. Time spent on the golf course, at The Clubhouse and at the Equestri an Center remind this family that Cordillera is right where they’re meant to be and that taking the plunge and settling into this community has been their best leap of faith yet.

While Isaiah and Lindsey transitioned rather easily to life in Boerne, they worried about the impact of the move on their two children. To ease this transition, Isaiah and Lindsey enrolled their kids in every camp and activity that Cordillera Ranch had to offer in order to help them to adjust and meet other area kids. One of the camps that they put their daughter, Ella, in was horse camp at The Equestrian Club. “We thought this was just a camp to be able to meet other kids and to pass the time. Little did we know, we’d found Ella’s passion,” said Isaiah. “From the start, Ella fell in love with the horses and, from there, she met other friends and began the life of a show jumper. Although we knew nothing about this sport and swore we would never own a horse (We’re on our second horse now!), we knew she loved it and it was an opportunity she would never have had, had it not been for the amenities that Cordillera Ranch offers. We love it because it’s more than riding. It also teaches responsibility and she takes it very seriously.” Their son, Julian, who seems to fit in everywhere that he goes, is active in all sports but football and baseball are two of his passions. He’s in his second year of playing football for Voss Middle School and the Navarrete family enjoys watching him play every chance that they get.

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 25

When the family isn’t busy with work, school and after school activities, travel provides a special time to reconnect and make memories. The Navarrete’s favorite hol iday getaway is to scenic Telluride, Colorado, where they have been spending Christmases since the children were small. The family rents a house every year in this winter wonderland, where Isaiah enjoys snowboarding and the kids ski. “We have so many memories and we love it. It’s been our tradition since the kids were little. I love taking my mom and mother-in-law because family is everything to us and it’s a great way to spend time with everyone,” shared Lindsey. In the five years since the Navarrete family has lived at Cordillera Ranch, they have fully embraced the Cordillera community and have become raving fans of the area. “We love Cordillera Ranch! We always eat at The Club and enjoy sitting on the patio with friends,” said Lindsey. “I lived in Odessa my whole life and I didn’t leave until we moved here. All of my family and friends were back home and when we moved, we were like, ‘Are we going to meet anyone? Are we going to have friends?’” said Lindsey. “It turns out that we have the best friends here! We travel to gether, the kids hang out together. We just do life together. It’s very comforting to have that,” added Lindsey of her new community.

GOLF THE WISCONSIN

After the pandemic stalled our 2020 Wisconsin Golf Trip plans, we were able to reschedule for this August and the trip booked in record time. It’s no wonder. We had the opportunity to play six of the Top 100 golf courses. This trip started out as 7.5 rounds of golf over six days and we managed to turn it into 9.5 rounds of golf!

26 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

By Corey Roberson, Director of Golf

On SATURDAY, July 30, I accompanied seven members from the Club on a flight from San Antonio to Chicago. One of the guys on the trip, Jack Dempsey, is a member at a really cool club in the Chicago area called Bob-O-Link Golf Club, so we thought it would be a good idea to start off there. We played 18-holes on Saturday afternoon and then went out for an emergency nine (E9) — this was the first of a few extensions. The E9 was inter esting as all eight of us played together in one group and we played a four-on-four scramble. We stayed at Bob-O-Link that night and visited a local restaurant. On SUNDAY, we played another 18-holes at Bob-O-Link and felt the need for another extension, which turned into 18-holes. For this round, we also played in an 8-ball with the same format as the previous day. The best part is that we played in under four hours! To top off a long day, we enjoyed some authentic Chicago deep dish pizza.

GOLF TRIP

On MONDAY, we loaded up in a couple of SUVs and headed to Wisconsin, the home of Whistling Straits® and Blackwolf Run® We played the new short course called the Baths at Blackwolf Run before playing the very difficult River course. The Baths is an awe some 10-hole short course with severe slopes, and the longest shot was 160 yards. A few of our caddies said many guests think the River course is the most difficult of the four main golf courses in Kohler. We ate dinner that night at the Blackwolf Run club house and hit the hay at the Inn on Woodlake. At this point, we’ve played five rounds of golf in three days!

TUESDAY was a big day — we started off with an early round at the Irish course at Whistling Straits and followed it up with the highly acclaimed Straits course. The Irish was really cool — another Pete Dye design with large dunes and plenty of bunkers. The nice part was we got to ride in carts as the Straits course is walking only. After a quick lunch at the clubhouse, we pegged it on the Straits course. This was my favorite course of the trip and easily in the top five of my fa vorite courses of all time. You see the water on almost every hole as you are basically meandering on a cliff above Lake Michigan. On top of that, I had one of the best loopers I’ve ever had, played well and the weather was perfect. That night, we had dinner at the Whistling Straits clubhouse and headed back to the Inn on Woodlake. Round count update — seven rounds of golf in four days…you could say we were some tired puppies!

All great golf trips must have a good lineup of courses — we checked that box. What can really take it to the next level is a great group of guys and we checked that box too! Thanks to Jack Dempsey, Barry Harkness, Bob Curtis, Kurt Talbot, Marc MacAluso, Mark Anderson and Chris Watts for making this trip soAfterspecial.playing six of the top courses in the U.S., we headed home. Through The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Signature Vaca tions, we curated a trip with the same level of accommodations and attention that our members expect while living on the Ranch or traveling with us on a variety of exclusive and well-ap pointed trips. Our vacation packages are scheduled year-round and designed to appeal to the many interests of Club members. Stay tuned for more experiences through the Clubs.

28 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

On THURSDAY, we were all gassed — we’d played eight rounds of golf in five days with one more to go. Our final (or so we thought) round was at Lac La Belle. This is a unique spot as it origi nally opened in 1892. The golf course that stands today is totally different after the owners of the Prestwick Golf Group completely renovated the golf course and built all new structures. The greens there are super tricked up, which made for an interesting test. After the round, the group decided we needed to play more golf, but instead of hanging out at the putting course at Lac La Belle or playing another nine there, we headed back down to Chi cago for an E9 at Bob-O-Link. We had so much fun playing in those 8-balls, we saw it fitting to end the trip where it started!

On WEDNESDAY, we loaded up and headed to Erin Hills, the home of the 2017 U.S. Open. Even-though this was the hardest walk (by a wide margin), it was also the favorite course by many in our group. There are lots of sweep ing hills and our caddies made the joke, “Just find the tallest hill and start climbing, there’s probably a tee box up there.” We got a little unlucky with the weather as a rain storm blew in and de layed us a couple of hours, but we were able to get out and ended up with a nice afternoon. That evening, we drove 30 minutes down the road to Ocomonowoc where we had some really good Mexican food. None of us were expecting good Mexican food in Wisconsin, but we were pleasantly surprised.

SUPREME C OURTS

The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Tennis and Pickleball Club just got a major face lift! The Clubs have added two new tennis courts and six new dedicated pickleball courts.

GOLF

30 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

It was certainly not an easy task to get this project complet ed. There were many challenges along the way. Even before construction began, we had a rainy season, which delayed the site work needed for the new courts. We also had some supply chain issues with materials for our new retaining walls. Once contractors got to work, it continued to be a long process. With the explosion of pickleball popularity, crews were spread thin and it seemed at times that the completion of the By Joe De Luna, Director of Tennis project was so far away. There was great dedication and pa tience from our management team, which allowed this amazing facility to come to life. We still have work to do on the areas around the courts, but the courts themselves are playable and look beautiful. We have permanent nets, return fencing in between courts to cut down on ball traffic and LED lighting for superior night play and energy conservation.

THE NEW TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL COURTS ARE OPEN FOR PLAY!

On Saturday, August 27, we were finally able to celebrate the Grand Opening of the new courts with a 9:00am ribbon cutting, breakfast snacks, music and, of course, lots of pickle ball and tennis. See you on the courts!

OurClub.membership has provided overwhelmingly positive feedback and they are enjoying this beautiful facility that is one-of-a-kind in the private club industry in the San Antonio and Hill County area. There is so much excitement for the fu ture of our tennis and pickleball programs, as existing and new members continue to flood the courts with activity despite the extreme temperatures this summer.

In addition to the new courts, we have also added a new water and ice station behind the Tennis Pro Shop. This includes an ice and water dispenser for your convenience, a drinking water fountain and a place to fill up water bottles and water jugs. This will greatly reduce our plastic water bottle usage. I encourage all members and their guests to bring a refillable water bottle, tumbler or jug when visiting the Tennis and Pick leball

Burpees. Push-Ups. Tire flips. That is what the phrase “boot camp” is associated with, right?

So, let’s talk about this wholebeing wellness spectrum. Here is the typical pattern that often happens in the fitness world. A member/client comes in ready to start a plan. They are sporad ic with workouts or they are starting fresh from years of being off. This person arrives at the gym, which, by the way, can be very intimidating! Joining a new group exercise class can be just as intimidating (nonetheless, possible!). They start strength training, not knowing what order to go in, what muscles to start with, how many days they should work out per week, etc. And let’s say they get past the initial discomfort. Maybe they are working out so hard that injury happens and all along they don’t lose weight. Pieces are missing. This is the importance of having a wellness spectrum: Nutrition – Sleep – Strength Training – Flexibility – Emo tional Wellness. All of these integrate, making each one important and all of themThatconnected.iswhereCR

As stated before, to pair this gem of a wine, a steak is in order. Last week, as I watched Chef Isaac cut from a rack of Wagyu Tomahawk Ribeyes, which would put any carnivore on high alert, this is the type of pairing that I would be looking for. A true gluttonous meal, nevertheless, but the best with the best! Now all you need are your dearest friends, family or business associates to make it a day or night to remember!

TASTE!

This Macauley ‘Beckstoffer To Kalon’ Cabernet Sauvignon is not your everyday wine but a sample of just how good Cabernet Sauvignon can be from Napa Valley. The source of the grapes come from the crowned jewel vineyard known as The Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. Not many will dispute that this is the absolute best vineyard in all of Napa.

See you at the Club… Jeff Jeffrey Cohen is the Wine Specialist at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at jcohen@cordilleraranch.com.By Jeffrey Cohen, Wine Specialist

To get into the wine: This silky wine is exactly what one expects from the legendary vineyard and terroir. It’s a quintessential Oakville expression that shows a nose bright of cherry, subtle highlights of currants, touches of leather and hints of tobacco, which come together as a Napa classic. The palate affords you a note of fresh blackberry and the sort of robust and chewy swirl of herbal, oak-laced vanilla on the finish. This begs you to prepare it with a chargrilled steak on a summer day. The tannins are youthful and absolutely gorgeous. The acidity is timed just right to carry out these flavors for a long, long finish. This 100% Cabernet is drinking beautifully right out of the bottle although a 30-minute decanting is probably best. The wine is aged for 28 months in 100% New French Oak Barrels, bottled unfiltered and unfined and only 225 cases were produced. The wine maker is Kirk Venge.

For this edition’s taste, I want to highlight one of our new offerings at the Club. We visited Macauley on our Napa trip and just wanted to keep our relationship fresh. Mac was out of town but was gracious enough to open up his home for us. We sat under the giant trees overlooking the flower-framed pool looking up at Howell Mountain and the scorched earth and trees left from the fires of 2020.

In my 16-plus years living in the Hill Country, I have never seen it this dry. The majority of Texas lakes are extremely low and the upper Guadalupe River that flows through Cordillera Ranch has had no flow since late June. I’ve seen the gauges at zero cubic feet per second before, but never in June! Yes, the drought in 2011 was severe, but the 2022 drought is now surpassing 2011 unfortunately. For myself, who spends a lot of time in and around water in our rivers, creeks and lakes, the drought is psychologically challenging for me to stay positive on a daily basis without the water-based recreation activities of kayaking and fishing avail able in and around the Ranch. For our members who enjoy spending time kayaking and toobing the upper Guadalupe, it was a long summer of dry weather with no opportunities other than traveling north to the Comal River in New Braunfels and the San Marcos River in San Marcos. The drought will most immediately cause fish to die and such kills have already happened in parts of the state, including the upper Guadalupe River. Over the winter and spring, the upper Guadalupe at Cordillera Ranch was a really good fishing stretch of river, with us routinely catching double digit numbers of Guadalupe Bass, the Texas State Freshwater Fish, on the stretch from Cordillera Ranch to Bergheim Campground at FM3351. We can only hope and pray that some of the fish find deep pools to survive. Without water, animals struggle with thirst. Few plants grow. Without plants, there are fewer insects. No insects result in low seed production. The animals that rely on seeds and plants for nutrition — from birds to deer — have low reproduction. Pred ators that rely on those animals as a food source remain hungry as well, and they reproduce less. The dried-up lakes and rivers are having a significant impact on the aquatic habitats and wildlife of Texas. The lakes that usually supply food and water to the birds on their migration paths are severely reduced, which has created a serious problem. Birds now have to find new migratory routes that include food and water sources and some birds do not have the energy to find new sources. Birds that migrate south in the winter will find little food and water this year in Texas so they will have to fly even farther south and expend more energy. As a result, they could reproduce less. Some of those birds, such as the colorful painted bunting, often fly to Cen tral America for part of the year where there has been a lot of rain and more insects than usual. But because of the drought in Texas and the Plains, there may not be enough birds to consume the insects.

DROUGHT IMPACTS ON

The decreased flows in rivers and streams and depleted major reservoirs across Texas are changing the fish population and even threatening the survival of some rare fish. Low or no stream flows cause a loss of habitat, degraded water quality and in creased saltwater intruding into fresh water. Marine fish are mov ing into Texas rivers with increased salinity. Texas ranks among the most biologically diverse states in the country. According to Water Resources Board, “approximately 40% of Texas fishes are

John Baccus, a wildlife biologist at Texas State University in San Marcos, said he is most immediately concerned with bats and song birds, both of which rely on insects for food. Baccus believes that some females will not have any offspring this year due to a poor diet. Whatever babies are born will likely have a low survival rate because they are entering a world with a scarce food supply. Already, Baccus said, he has noticed white-tailed deer looking skinnier than usual, their ribs jutting out. As a re sult, the mothers are producing less milk and the newest crop of fawns will be weaned at sub-par weight.

The impact on species also could last for years after the drought officially ends. For example, quail normally nest in grass grown a year earlier, but because of the drought, there has been almost no grass growth this year. That means many quail won’t be able to nest next year and the impact of the drought on the birds won’t be seen until 2023. With deer, the true impact may not be revealed for six years when the low reproduction rates caused by the drought will leave an age gap between older bucks and younger deer. Drought also impacts the quality and quantity of antler production, so this hunting season will prob ably see fewer trophy bucks harvested in areas that are experi encing drought conditions.

drought as quail, which depend on insects and native forbs to survive. Dove can get by on agricultural crops, such as sesame, sunflowers and sorghum. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, there was excellent production of mourning doves very early in the spring despite dry conditions this summer. A mild winter and good rains resulted in a lot of birds, so dove hunters still have some hope of a good season ahead.

Dove hunters across the state may have varying levels of suc cess due to drought conditions this season. While Texas hunters should see plenty of dove this year, the birds’ access to food and water will impact parts of the state.

As of right now, Texas ranks in the top five states for the number of endangered aquatic species and if the drought persists, the situation could worsen.

now already extinct or risk regional or even global extinction.”

According to AgriLife Extension, dove typically adjust well during periods of drought, moving from one area to another in search of food and water. But this movement will affect hunter success in various parts of Texas. Dove are not as impacted by

The Main Dining Room was filled with the amazing smells of French toast, pasta and cheesecake as our Little Chef’s learned how to make different meals at Culinary Camp. They worked hard as they mixed their fresh ingredients and rolled out their own pasta. Competition was fierce in the C-Star Games Camp as all the kids were eager to win the gold medal. Corah was the fastest in our paddle board races as she timed in at 31 sec onds! A new camp we launched this summer was called Little Rancher’s Golf Camp for ages 3 to 6. These little golfers enjoyed lessons on the very basics of golf and seriously took ownership in their game while learning how to care for their clubs and playing in their first mini tournament with their friends. Every summer is unique and every summer is fun. This year was no different and we can’t wait for next year!

Many kids learned to ride a horse, cook a meal from scratch, paddle board, draw a bow and arrow and much more through our summer camp programs. We love to watch the kids grow, learn and be hands-on with the many activities we offer.

LEGENDARY TEXAS MUSIC VENUES

JOHN T. FLOORE COUNTRY STORE - Throughout the years, the John T. Floore Country Store has seen music greats like Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, B. B. King, Little Richard and more. This is another dance hall on our list to have gained some fame due to a song from a music legend, this time from Willie Nelson’s “Shotgun Willie.”

There’s nothing quite like the dance halls and honky-tonks of Texas, and the best way to learn about them is to visit them! The Texas Hill Country is home to music venues featuring everything from rock and rockabilly to jazz, country and reggae. Here’s a list of a few venues to consider if you enjoy live music.

GRUENE HALL - Gruene Hall was built in 1878 and is the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. Even if they don’t have live music on the schedule, you should stop by for a cold drink and look at the signed portraits of country music legends spanning over 100 years.

WHITEWATER AMPHITHEATER - Whitewater Amphithe ater brings world-class acts to you in a gorgeous natural setting characteristic of the Texas Hill Country. The Main Stage is mere steps away from the Guadalupe River, and sweeping cypress trees complement the view to create an immersive experience.

11TH STREET COWBOY BAR – BANDERA - You can’t find a better venue in the Cowboy Capital of the World than the 11th Street Cowboy Bar. It calls itself the “Biggest Little Bar in Texas” and features some of the best country western and country swing bands in the state. The clientele is as unique as its décor, and you will frequently find cowboys and bikers mingling with the locals. At its core, 11th Street is a music venue and features top-notch Texas talent every week and often hosts jam sessions open to anyone.

44 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

LUCKENBACH, TEXAS - While every venue on this list is unique, the dance hall in Luckenbach, Texas is perhaps the most unique. It’s one of two buildings in the town by the same name, and yet it is one of the most famous and historic music venues in Texas, due in part to Waylon Jennings’ song, “Luckenbach, Texas.”

LUXURY LIMO VAN SERVICE

BROKEN SPOKE - The unassuming Broken Spoke is consid ered one of the last true Texas dance halls. Several greats have played here since its inception in 1964, including the likes of Willie Nelson, George Strait and several excellent local bands. It’s also drawn its fair share of celebrity visitors ranging from Dolly Parton to Fergie to Quentin Tarantino, so you never know who you might see when you visit!

Cordillera Ranch is an excellent place to host company meet ings and team-building activities as the unique environment allows companies to conduct business while enjoying the amen ities on the Ranch. Our team can arrange outdoor adventures for each group and the different interests within each group. For instance, some guests prefer golfing in the early morning while their colleagues can hit the trails on a two-hour horseback ride. Then everyone can regroup to enjoy a personalized wine tasting hosted by our wine specialist, Jeffrey Cohen. Jeffrey collabo rated with one group of ladies and was able to present an array of rosé flights and charcuterie. For another group, one day of their personalized itinerary included horseback riding in the hills, floating the Comal River and a private pre fixe dinner at the Clubhouse. Other activities include spa sessions, clay shooting at the gun range, tennis and so much more.

The accommodations at the Lodges’ Georg unit are ideal for corporate gatherings, with four private rooms and a common area that can be used for conferences as well as a place to unwind. A recent group was greeted with customized whiskey stones, charcuterie boards and a personalized welcome card upon arrival to their rooms. During their stay, they used the Georg common area as a conference room, which provided complete privacy along with a gorgeous view of the Jack Nick laus Signature Golf Course. Each morning, the team received a catered hot continental breakfast with a coffee bar, custom pens and notepads, TV presentation access and most importantly, Wi-Fi! Use of the Clubs’ amenities followed and after a full day of activities, guests drove their custom golf carts back to the Lodges where king sized beds ensured a night of relaxation.

STACY STORY: “Over the past four years, we have hosted numerous important events for key clients and business partners at Cordillera Ranch. Each time, we enjoyed great success. The facilities, the atmosphere and the service team never fail to impress. The feedback from our guests has always been enthusiastic and complimentary. Because of these exceptional experiences, we decided to host our annual corporate leadership team retreat at Cordillera. This was a four-day event attended by 22 members of our staff. With lots of moving parts, coordination was key. We enjoyed activities like horseback riding and golf. Cordillera Ranch made sure our retreat was memorable in all the best ways. The food was fantastic as always, they provided five-star service and the Ranch environment proved the perfect backdrop for team-building, fun and relaxation.”

Our seventh annual Cordillera Ranch Cellar Club trip takes us back to Napa Valley, one of the world’s premier wine regions and famous for its prized Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year we try to focus on different wine growing AVAs (American Viticulture Areas) and have enjoyed wines from central California near San ta Barbara, Sonoma and Oregon. Our first two wine trips back in 2012 and 2013 concentrated mainly on Napa Valley from Car neros to Calistoga so it was time to focus again on the delicious wines and primarily big reds known to this region. This year’s trip was led and organized by Debbie Pepper, Mem bership Director at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch and “Unofficial Wine Tour Operator” along with the Club’s Wine Director/Som melier Jeff Cohen, who shared his expertise, made wine selections and pairings as needed and served as co-host assisting our mem bers. This year’s attendees included first-time wine trippers, Sarah and Mark Philpy, Susan and Tom Boehme, Susie and John Long, Susan and Keith Lynch, Ashley and Don Lovingfoss, Pat and Mike Noggle, Jill and Will Detterman, Sally and Steve Grinnell, Tina and Mike Catlin and five-time “veteran guest,” Teri Wenglein.

MONDAY SINEGAL ESTATE WINERY – A family-owned, historic proper ty located in the renowned St. Helena AVA. This was a wonderful first tasting of the day, sampling their delicious wines under an arbor overlooking the beautiful grounds encompassing a lake, gardens and vineyards. While tasting, owner David Sinegal joined us, presenting the history of this fami ly-owned estate winery, which was originally the historic Inglewood Estate and is now producing stunning Bordeaux-style varietals.

We can now expect Cordillera Ranch home parties will feature their talents and those of the rest of the group who wanted in on the action!

The finale for our first day in Napa was a wonderful welcome dinner in the middle of the Villagio Vineyard, equipped with strands of string lights making for a very intimate and pictur esque setting. While walking through the vineyard, we remarked that it felt like a scene from “Field of Dreams” where Shoeless Joe Jackson walked out of the cornfields!

CHIMNEY ROCK – Located in the renowned Stags Leap Dis trict on the Silverado Trail. Here we enjoyed their elegant “Ganymede Experience,” a seated paired wine luncheon named after their Ganymede Vine yard, which is the cornerstone of their famed reserve Cabernet and home to the oldest vines on the estate.

TRUCHARD VINEYARDS – Located in the Carneros AVA known for producing renowned Pinot Noir grapes. Truchard Vineyards grows 12 different grape varieties making it one of the most diverse estate vineyards in Napa Valley due to their unique topography. Their wines are 100% estate grown, bottled and produced on property. We were delighted by owner and former Texan Jo Ann Truchard, who enthusiastical ly toured us around the property serving delicious Pinot Noirs and other varietals. Jo Ann and Tony, both graduates at the University of Texas, also spent time in San Antonio before heading to California and starting their family-owned winery. Our group enjoyed dinner at BRIX (a local Napa favorite) as well as more cocktails than wine to change the mood and prepare for much more wine to follow the next day!

CHARLES KRUG – Located in the St. Helena AVA, this is Napa Valley’s oldest es tate winery established in 1861 by Charles Krug then later purchased by the Mondavi family in 1943 and has been operated since by four generations of the family. We enjoyed a tour of the estate, vineyards and barrel room housed in the historic landmark Redwood Cellar Tasting Room and Hospitality Center while learning about the history of the estate and strolling past Mondavi homes where the children grew up. We enjoyed a wood-fired pizza lunch outside under the trees followed by a private tasting upstairs featuring a variety of great wines. During lunch, we were delighted to meet Rianna Mondavi, granddaughter of Peter Mondavi, Sr. and great-granddaughter of Cesare Mondavi who purchased Charles Krug in 1943. Rianna and her three sisters are known as G4 (four generations all involved in the family business) and was delightful, sharing family history. A won derful experience learning about some of Napa’s founding wine industry.

MACAULEY VINEYARDS – A small pro duction boutique winery, relatively new but has in no time risen to the exalted ranks of Napa Valley wine hierarchy with legendary winemaker Kirk Venge. Since Macauley has only a small tasting room in St. Helena that could not accom modate our group of 21, we were invited to a tasting at owner Mac Watson’s coun tryside home where we enjoyed a won derful tasting outside on his patio under the trees. We tasted an exceptional Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We learned that Macau ley sources their grapes from renowned Napa Valley vineyards in Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Beckstoffer, Kalon and Bacigalupi Picnic lunch at Krug with Riana Mondavi Truchard Vineyards Truchard Vineyards Davis Estate Davis Estate

Truly a trip highlight, we were treated to a tour starting with their historic barn and a “behind the scenes” opportunity to see their cutting-edge 11,000-squarefoot cave system. We were then seated in one of their elegant, artfully designed tasting spaces to sample their estate wines paired with charcuterie. Our grand finale — a special preview of their Cellar ium (Founders Club Only), named V after their exclusive Phase V wines crafted by master winemaker Phillipe Melka, was an unexpected surprise. This elegant space features sculptured works of art and luxurious furnishings and can only be entered by an infrared hand vein scan for Founders Club Members. Our final day began up the storied slopes of Howell Mountain where we were welcomed at the Cypress House, which is magnificently designed with floating cypress logs encased in glass and steel, as well as the private tasting Wine Library — idyllic settings for tasting their beautiful wines. Following the tour, we enjoyed a seated tasting of their elite wines accompanied by charcuterie and had the pleasure of meeting owner Den ise Adams prior to leaving.

B CELLARS – In any given year, B Cellars grapes originate from upwards of eight Napa Valley AVAs and three in Sonoma County. Founded in 2003, B Cellars is a collaboration of two individuals who shared a vision of creating a food-centric winery focused on blending top-notch va rietals from Napa Valley’s most legendary vineyards and has been said to be “a craft winery delivering the best wine and food pairing experience in Napa Valley.” Wines are blended from different vineyards as well as different varietals resulting in lay ers of flavors unattainable from traditional single vineyard, single varietal production, thus known as a multi-vineyard, multi-vari etal winemaking strategy. After a long day we headed back to our hotel in Yountville to change for our ele gant wine cave dinner at B Cellars. Upon arrival, we tasted delicious appetizers and wine pairings on the event lawn outside the wine caves, followed by a tour of their wine cave where we enjoyed an elegant dinner affair with wine pairing for each course. The food pairings are made from scratch using ingredients mostly grown onsite from stone fruit orchards, olive trees, a culinary garden and hen house. Herbs and edible flowers are also grown on property creating a true farm-to-table culinary expe rience paired with delicious wines.

GANDONA ESTATE – Located in the prestigious Pritchard Hill area known for producing Bordeaux varietals that secure the highest score, prices, scarcity and collectability. Another phenomenal stop to end a fab ulous week in Napa Valley, we tasted ex quisite wines in their beautiful tasting room

The first Cordillera Cares project supported Boerne Blaze, the local chapter of Special Olympics Texas. Boerne Blaze is an active group of more than 50 athletes with intellectual challenges ranging in age from 6 to 45. Cordillera Cares volunteers assisted at their annual kick-off event in July and will be hosting their End of Season Swim Party at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch in August.

July also brought team members together to support Hill County Family Services (www.hcfstx.org) and their BISD Back to School Hygiene Drive. HCFS operates at the intersection of urgent need and lasting change. They work to foster mental and physical wellness, stability and independence for individuals and families who are in crisis in Kendall County.

CLUB HIGHLIGHTS

In October, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch will host HCFS’ annual golf tournament and Cordillera Cares volunteers will be helping at the event. Coming this fall, Cordillera Cares will be collecting toys and gift cards for the Kendall County Sherriff’s Office Foundation Operation Blue Santa. This annual event helps the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office provide Christmas presents for children in need throughout Kendall County. Team members are encouraged to present volunteer ideas to our Cordillera Cares Board to focus on in 2023. There will also be awards and other incentives coming for team members to get involved. This new volunteer effort is designed to bring together our staff from all areas of Cordillera Ranch to give back to our Kendall County community. We are blessed to live and work in a beautiful part of the country and know that our combined efforts will help make it even better.

Our entire team from Cordillera Ranch, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association and DH Investments, Ltd. are involved in this effort to help support dif ferent nonprofit projects throughout the year. This gives our staff the chance to contribute to our community while getting to know our colleagues that work in the many different areas of Cordillera Ranch. There is nothing like laughing and sharing while working together for a common good to bring folks together.

By Amy Schoemaker, Vice President of Operations for DHI

Charlie Hill announced the initiative in July with a YouTube video highlighting the three organizations that Cordillera Cares will support in 2022. Brianna Botine, Victoria DeRocher and Kathi Spink are leading the projects and organizing our Cordillera team.

The Hygiene Drive supplied full-size soap, toothpaste and oth er necessities so these students can head to school feeling fresh and clean, along with a few sweet treats all supplied in a reusable lunch bag. Cordillera Ranch and Cordillera Cares teamed up to provide 60 bags — 10 over goal! Some staff donated items while other team members came together to stuff all the bags.

For more than 15 years, Boerne Special Olympics has been a resource for athletes seeking an equitable opportunity to participate in a variety of sports. Over the years, there has been a name change to Boerne Blaze Special Olympics (BBSO) and an overwhelming interest from athletes in Boerne and the surrounding areas.

By Ann Koehler MIRIAM

ADAM

SOTX is currently encouraging and implementing unified sports. Cashion explains, “That is where typical athletes com pete alongside our special athletes. This works really well in sports like swimming (relays), triathlon and cycling (tandem bikes). The ‘best’ partners are those who are sometimes strug gling themselves but are not intellectually challenged. It gives them an opportunity to belong to a group and be a role model and to succeed. They are very appreciated and it boosts their self-esteem. It is a win-win.”

58 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

BBSO offers sports year-round and most of their athletes participate in more than one season a year. Strict time commit ments can include as many as four hours of practice per week, with some sports seasons overlapping, plus area competitions and unofficial tournaments within BBSO. Nine coaches donate their time to BBSO — six are parents of athletes and three are personally dedicated for various reasons. “I have always had a profound appreciation for those three,” Cashion said.

MIRIAM has been a BBSO athlete for years and says it’s not just the physical activity that has benefitted her, but the cama in Boerne

COMMUNITY

Cashion admits that she initially resisted Special Olympics, determined that ADAM would participate in regular sports. “But by the time he was 9, I knew that would be a hard thing for everyone. He just didn’t understand and was not mo torically able to keep up with his typical peers….and I wanted him to do sports and to be successful in sports. So, through Bo erne ISD, he started bowling and track Special Olympics.” Today Adam is 28 years old and still thrives in his select sports. To participate, athletes must have an intellectual disability (some also have a physical disability). Cashion says the BBSO has athletes with Down syndrome, other syndromes, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and intellectual disabilities not associated with a syndrome or genetic condition. With the current roster of 56 athletes, the ages range from 6 years old to 54, with half of the group being over the age of 21. Some Special Olympics pro grams are in the school district, but BBSO is community-based so they can accommodate this wide age range.

BBSO is a local delegation under Area 20 (San Antonio), which falls under SOTX (Special Olympics Texas). SOTX rules and regulations apply, such as certified coaching requirements and adherence to the rules of each specific sport. Jenny Cashion became the Head of Delegation in 2007. Since that time, they have added more sports and have become a very active group for individuals with special needs. Focus is on endur ance, sports rules, teamwork, sportsmanship and general physical fitness. An important added benefit is the friendships these ath letes build and the bonds of the parents.

Cashion’s involvement with BBSO is naturally a personal one. After several years working as a pediatric physical therapist, she gave birth to Adam, her third child. Adam has Down syndrome. “I continued to work but kept questioning God about whether having Adam was to make me a better therapist or being the therapist was to make me a better mother to a child with special needs.” Ultimately, she realized it was both and has used her knowledge and experience to help grow BBSO to benefit all people with intellectual disabilities.

LIEZEL, now 26 years old, has been with BBSO for about 10 years and sums up her experience beau tifully, saying, “What I like about this program is that I’ve made a lot of friends and I am treated like an equal. Basketball is my favorite sport. I enjoy being part of a team and I like playing the game. There are a lot of opportunities to try different sports/activities and figure out what I like. I would like to thank all the coaches and volunteers for sacrificing their time and teaching us different things. I hope this pro gram continues for a very long time so that future generations can enjoy and learn from it.”

“Boerne Blaze has been a lynchpin to our family in building a sense of com munity for Elijah. He enjoys training and competing with his fellow athletes. In San Antonio, Special Olympics is built into the school schedule. It was such a pleasant surprise to see the number of sports available via BBSO. Elijah has thrived in swimming, cycling, tennis, bowling, basketball and triath lon. If it weren’t for Boerne Blaze, he would never have been exposed to tri athlon as an option,” Aimee explained.

LIEZELCHRISTOPHERELIJAH

“Just this year, Cordillera Cares has asked to help support us! They have offered us the use of the pools for our end-of-season swim meet and pool party!” said Cashion. To support the BBSO in any capacity, please contact Jenny Cashion at jappacash@yahoo.com or 210.279.0663, or visit their Facebook page at Facebook.com/SOTX20/.

Run entirely by financial donations and good-hearted volunteers, BBSO dollars are often stretched thin. Ex penses include equipment, uniforms and gatherings. Cashion has coaches certified in CPR and first aid every two years along with team building activities. She states that every dollar is spent on benefitting the athletes.

ELIJAH’S mom, Aimee, recognized the benefits of BBSO after moving from San Antonio to the Boerne area.

raderie that has helped her to be more social. “I had low self esteem because people didn’t accept me the way I am because of my hand icap. I do bowling and cycling and triathlon. When we have triathlon, I only do one part and my team mates do one part, too. When we have indoor triathlon, I walk on the treadmill and sometimes I use the stationary bike and when we have outdoor triathlon I ride my bicycle. I have an adult tricycle. When I ride my bicycle, I feel good physically and emotionally. I like the Special Olympics,” she shared.

Local organizations have developed close relationships with BBSO, like the Young Men’s Service League in Boerne as well as Cordillera Ranch.

For CHRISTOPHER, two of his most memorable experiences were his participation in the Special Olym pics State swim competition at Texas A&M in 2019 and a couple of years later “seeing teammates and coach es again briefly after not seeing our team for many months during the pandemic, and getting the Elizabeth Hernandez Spirit Award (for helping teammates)!” Christopher joined BBSO as an elementary school student and is now a senior at Bo erne-Champion High School. When asked what he has learned through BBSO, he said, “How to perform basketball skills like defense, differ ent swimming styles and working as a team,” adding, “The coaches help us, and the team helps each other.”

On The Ballot

60 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

“We are appreciative of the persistence by Chief Hawkins, Board President Jeff Heffstadt and the entire Board of Directors of the BVFD to push forward with the arduous process of form ing Kendall County ESD 1; there is no doubt that it will pay div idends in protecting the citizens of the area for years to come,” notes Charlie Hill, President of Cordillera Ranch Development Corp. “The BVFD has been stretched thin for many years with limited resources, yet an enormous area to serve and we’re happy to support their efforts in getting the ESD approved and formed, which will help them add staffed firefighters and poten tially life-saving equipment. As the largest property tax-payer (and residents) in the proposed ESD, we recognize you can’t put a price tag on ensuring emergency services will be there when you or loved ones need them the most,” added Hill.

By Ann Koehler

ESDCOUNTYKENDALL1

The beautiful Hill Country in and around Cordillera Ranch is one of the most sought-after areas in one of the fastest growing coun ties in Texas, drawing families from all over the country. Adam Hawkins, the Chief of the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD), and his staff are passionate about serving and protecting the area to the highest of standards, but adequately protecting people, property and businesses within a 58-square-mile area has grown increasingly difficult in recent years. As a volunteer fire department funded primarily by donations, and about $100,000 from Kendall County each year, it has become necessary to secure a sustainable and permanent funding source through the establishment of an Emergency Services District (ESD).

COMMUNITY

A Kendall County ESD 1 would be allowed to collect prop erty taxes to fund emergency services in our community. The new ESD would only support the BVFD and funds could not be directed to other communities or county initiatives. This would mean ESD tax dollars of the property owners in the ESD service area would fund the costs of a more appropriately-staffed fire department and the replacement of unsafe and outdated equip ment per National Fire Protection Association requirements. It could also mean an improved ISO rating resulting in lower insurance premiums for homeowners and those who operate businesses within the new district.

In 2004, a group of concerned citizens comprised of Steve Koronczok, Scott Shaheen and J.W. Pieper gathered to explore the viability of a volunteer fire station in Eastern Kendall County. This organizing committee grew support from other local residents and Kendall County Commissioner Gene Miertsch in-Precinct 2 assisted in obtaining a land deed from the county to build the fire station. The BVFD received its first call on June 1, 2009, along with 57 additional calls that year. That number has rapidly increased and the BVFD has been the first respond er to fire and medical emergencies at homes and serious auto accidents in this area ever since. Between January and July of 2022, 334 calls have been serviced, which is only 52 calls shy of the total from 2021. To address the growing demand and better meet the commu nity’s needs, the BVFD filed a petition signed by more than 300 neighbors from its response area to the Commissioners Court requesting a spot on the upcoming election ballot, which would allow residents in the district to vote on a measure to create an ESD to cover the Bergheim area. “It would give us financial stability to grow with the community. We have to do something different to guarantee funds to guarantee service all the time,” said Hawkins. On July 11, 2022, Kendall County Commissioners voted to unanimously approve the request and this November 8, 2022, voters will decide if the BVFD will become Kendall County Emergency Services District 1.

are considered as well. For example, if the ESD board sets an initial 5.0 cent tax rate and in future years needs to increase it, it would require another vote of the people if the proposed tax exceeds the Senate Bill 2 limit, which caps property tax increases to 3.5% a year. Once the ESD is formed, anoth er funding option would become possible that could shift the burden from property owners in the district that doesn’t exist for volunteer fire departments. Emergency Services Districts can peti tion residents for the authority to collect a sales and use tax not to exceed the state maximum of 8.25%. With a growing number of commercial properties developing in the district, this would allow people who travel to and through our community to contribute to the emergency services they use while they are here. Many ESD’s across Texas have been able to freeze or even lower their proper ty tax rate with the addition of sales tax revenues.

“Any amount we receive will increase the service we can provide. Our goal is consistency in response. Additionally, permanent staff and new equipment will provide more capabil ity, which is a notch towards lowering our ISO,” said Hawkins, whose current volunteer roster totals 24, with only seven volun teers living within the response area.

If passed, the Kendall County Commissioners Court will appoint an ESD board of five tax-paying residents and prop erty owners within the district and response area. From there, the ESD board will look at the appraised value of the district, determine what they feel are the needs of the BVFD and set the tax rate. In Texas, the maximum tax rate for ESDs is ten cents per $100 of the assessed value of a property. Hawkins said, “We hired an ESD consultant and worked with him and our officers to create different scenarios for our station’s growth and service based on 10 cent, 7.5 cent, 5.0 cent and 2.5 cent taxOtherincreases.”factors

At the election, the community will decide whether or not to establish an ESD. Hawkins said that “the community, including Cordillera Ranch Development, has been very supportive of the initiative so far.”

Boerne ISD is, indeed, proud to announce that Boerne High School placed 4th out of 213 high schools in the 4A classifica tion for the school year 2021-22, and Boerne-Champion High School placed 10th out of 253 5A high schools. This is the district’s third achievement in recent years, with Boerne ranking 3rd and Champion 10th in 2020-21 and Boerne 18th and Champion 9th in 2018-19. No Cup was awarded in 2019-20.

RECOGNIZEDISDAGAIN

ANOTHER CUP that carries a lot of weight in Greater San Antonio and the surrounding areas is named in honor of Dan Cook, the legendary Express-News sportswriter and columnist from 1952-2003 and KENS-TV sports anchor from 1956-2000. The newspaper has awarded the Dan Cook Cup to one area high school every year since 2002-03, based entirely on athletic achievement with a scoring formula similar to the UIL’s.

THE UIL LONE STAR CUP program began in 1997 to recog nize high schools’ overall team achievement in academics, ath letics and music, and is ranked by the six UIL classifications: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A. The list of scored activities is extensive, ranging from music, theatre and spirit to academics and all areas of sports, for a total of 23 categories. “The UIL Lone Star Cup rewards the best overall academic, athletic and music programs in the state of Texas,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt on the organization’s website. “To win, every student, teacher and coach across all areas of UIL competition must con tribute. The winning schools and communities should be proud of this outstanding achievement.”

The 21 distinction designations encompass 1 in English Lan guage Arts; 2 in Mathematics; 7 in Science; 1 in Social Studies; 2 in Academic Growth; 4 in Post-Secondary Readiness; and 4 in Closing the Gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span and student demographics.

Boerne ISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Price stated, “We must also stress that Boerne ISD is a lot more than just an ‘A’ rating in the classroom. Our students are well-rounded, having excelled in extracurricular activities such as Athletics, Fine Arts, FFA, 4-H and more. Our goal is to help students prepare for their future, which extends well beyond standardized tests or classroom assign ments. We want our students to leave BISD ready to excel in their next stage of life, whether that is joining the workforce, attending college, enlisting in the military and more.”

Formed in 1913 at The University of Texas by merging a Debating League of Texas High Schools with the Athletic Association, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) has since existed to provide extracurricular academic, athletic and musical competitions throughout Texas and is even the largest interschool organization in the world.

UIL Lone Star Cup standings are announced every summer for the previous school year.

Boerne High School was recently awarded the Cup for the second year in a row, adding to three previous consecutive wins in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. This award comes after Bo erne High’s state championships in boys soccer and boys tennis singles, and state semifinals in boys basketball and girls soccer. Boerne-Champion High School has also won the Dan Cook Cup four times, in 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2018-19.

ACADEMICALLY, Boerne ISD also stands out. The district just received its third-consecutive ‘A’ rating with a grade of 94 in The Texas Education Agency’s state-wide Student Testing and Ac countability ratings for the 2021-22 school year. Only 33% (396) of nearly 1,200 school districts statewide received an ‘A’ rating for the 2021-22 school year and only 1% of districts have earned it three years straight.

grams in the state. We try to be good at everything. A lot of this is based on our top enrollment, but we’ve got great parents who do a good job of getting their kids training and coaches who put the kids in the right spots,” said Coach Stan Leech, Director of Ath letics at Boerne ISD, adding that what sets the district apart is the good, balanced extracurricular programs available to students at both high schools. “We don’t put all our eggs in one basket — we put them in all baskets,” he said. Leech also noted that while the UIL Lone Star Cup scores predominantly come from athletics, the other teams’ contributions are equally important, such as Cham pion High School’s One-Act Play State Championship in 2021-22 that contributed significantly to their current ranking.

The Evolution of the HOMECOMINGMUM

64 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

You may have noticed local businesses showing their school spirit with painted windows and balloons arches, urging the home team to “Fight! Fight! Fight!” and declaring war on this week’s opposing team. There’s no doubt about it, high school football season is a big deal in Texas (“Friday Night Lights” ring a bell?) and often comes to a fevered pitch during home comingHomecomingweek. is a time for high school alumni to relive their glory days and reconnect with old friends. The lead-up to the main event also involves all sorts of activities for current stu dents, like dress-up days, special pep rallies and culminates with the big football game, typically against a rival school or — bet ter yet — a team that your school is sure to beat. For the big homecoming celebration, your date will commis sion a homecoming mum, which is a giant flower corsage that will be decorated with ribbons, bells and bows. It’s also common for parents to gift their daughter a mum, and in many school groups, girls will exchange mums with their team “big and little sisters.” But mums aren’t just for girls anymore. Guys have also jumped in on the action. What started as a simple garter in school colors worn around their arm has evolved into garters embellished with flowers and ribbons and often decked out in the same fashion as the girls’ versions. As with most things in Texas, bigger is always better, but this hasn’t always been the case when it comes to homecoming mums. Ironically, in the ear ly ‘80s, when hair was huge, mums were smaller, seldom longer than your waistline — about the size of a garter mum these days, actually — and the flower was still real.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… no, it’s not quite the holiday season just yet, but it is the next best thing — high school football season in Texas!

By Jenny Jurica :: Photography courtesy of BoerneMums.com

IN SEASON

Beginning in the ‘90s, the size of the homecoming mum and its adornments grew by leaps and bounds. Gone were the days of a modest, fresh flower corsage that could be easily pinned to a girl’s blouse. Enter: the giant silk homecoming mum that requires special structural implements, not to mention battery packs.

On homecoming night, in stadiums all across the state, the lights will burn bright, illuminating the autumnal Texas skies, where decades-old homecoming customs are kept alive and well. Teens will proudly display their mums and a homecoming king and queen will be crowned, along with their court, as the marching band plays the soulful alma mater and fight song — just as it’s been done for generations. While so many other tradi tions have fallen by the wayside through the years, homecoming remains a time to make memories, feel pride for one’s school, show off your mum and enjoy that most special and anticipated Friday night of the year in Texas high school football.

The homecoming mum is said to have made its first appear ance in Texas in the 1930s at Baylor University and the trend quickly trickled down to Texas high school football. The early incarnations of a homecoming mum consisted of a small, fresh white chrysanthemum flower with a few short, unassuming ribbons and maybe a tasteful amount of glitter. The mum was pinned to a girl’s blouse and worn to the homecoming game and then to the dance that followed. This early version of the homecoming mum likely cost less than $5 and would later be dried, pressed and saved for posterity’s sake.

REGIONAL PREFERENCES

Homecoming mums have become so large and have caused such a commotion that some school districts have put a limit on who can wear their mums to school. Many schools have strict rules that limit the wearing of homecoming mums to only upper classmen and for only select hours of the school day, due to the distraction that the giant, seizure-inducing, clanking apparati can cause during the school day. Here in Boerne, mums at school are permitted on the big game day.

Depending on where in Texas you live, the size, shape and style of mums vary. For instance, in some parts of the state, the school’s colors are often completely abandoned in favor of the recipient’s personal color preferences. In other parts of Texas, students have yet to embrace the large and showy mums (or, perhaps they’ve come back full circle) in favor of more tradi tional, modestly-sized corsages. Mums reflect not only school spirit, but also hobbies and interests, with plastic trinkets identifying sports and clubs. Whataburger has even gotten in on the homecoming mum action by offering tutorials on their website for how to create a Whataburger-themed mum. They also claim to have created the longest mum at a whopping 18feet in length.

MORE COWBELL!

These days, a show-stopping homecoming mum might be affixed to a piece of plexiglass, complete with a neck strap, in order to withstand the weight of the decorations. The mum might cover the entire torso on the recipient, with ribbons and garlands reaching down to their feet. New styles pop up every year, like the one-shoulder design that resembles a very acces sorized beauty pageant sash. Mums often have battery-operat ed Christmas tree lights, stuffed animals highlighting the school mascot, cowbells and other assorted noise-makers and more types of braided ribbons than a sailor has knots. For high school seniors in Boerne and elsewhere, predominately white mums with gold or silver accents are traditional. Today, a mum of this magnitude can cost several hundreds of dollars and (reportedly) up to $1,000 for the most extravagant.

Over the past two years we have observed a significant amount of cross traffic which is to be expected, however, it also increases risk. This year we will be asking an yone who will be participating on the hayride route to line up at the park in a specific order. Staging will begin with anyone operating golf carts or UTV in the first section, those operating motor vehicles second and those pulling trailers will line up third. We will be placing directional signage along the hayride route to move the flow of traffic in one direction. We also ask that anyone who will be participating in the hayride route be at the park no later than 4:30pm to ensure an efficient departure from the park. This event couldn’t happen without our awesome volunteers that give their time to the community to bring this event togeth er. This year our Pico-Boo Halloween Party will be held on Octo ber 29, from 5:00 to 9:00pm at the Swede Creek Park. Last year the addition of the Schoolyard Dogs Food Truck was a huge hit and they will be joining us again. Schoolyard Dogs is a food truck whose intent is to create a place for special needs people to gain work experience and further their individual growth. They sold out at our last party so they will be back with even more inventory and offerings this year.

The Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association has also invited back Melissa, our fantastic face painter, which we know the kids enjoyed last year. Pico Propane will be joining the party as always with their fantastic partnership, helping to supply property owners on Riverwood and Riverwalk with candy to hand out. The Bergheim Fire Department will be bringing out one of the fire trucks as they have done the past few years and will be handing out candy as well.

As always there will be spooky tunes playing plus a new in flatable haunted house maze for the younger attendees. We are working on a few additional surprises as well.

HOME TOUR PASADERA BUILDERS By Kimberly A. Suta :: Photography by Doug Gaidry III, DG Digital Imaging Photography T HE B ENEDIRA The “Village People” Welcome 68 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022

This gated community within a gated community is an ideal choice for homeowners interested in a lock-and-leave lifestyle, less acreage and less maintenance. Lock-and-leave properties provide exterior landscaping that is maintained for you automatically.

CordilleraRanchLiving.com

One of Di Lusso’s newest additions to the community is a home Pasadera Builders refers to as The Benedira, which was completed in December of 2020. Pasadera chooses names with special meanings for every home in Di Lusso, and Benedira loosely translates from Italian to “blessing.”

According to Pasadera Builders’ Building Team Leader, Gabri el Garcia, “In our definition, we take it a step further and include a technology package with each of these homes that allows two things. First, it allows the owner to have remote access using an app on their phone and, additionally, it also keeps the neighbor hood lighting consistent with the ‘Dark Sky’ goals.”

To elaborate, the Di Lusso Villas are essentially smart homes, customized to each homeowner’s needs. Whether you have an alarm system, sauna, pool, A/C or an assortment of other ameni ties connected, all of it can be remotely controlled from anywhere on the planet, as long as you have Wi-Fi or a phone connection.

In this case, the owners travel significantly, so they were looking for something exquisite with beautiful views in the Hill Country but with the convenience of a lock-and-leave.

As for the lighting, in order to comply with night sky regula tions, all of the houses are automatically lit at the same relative level given the individual light fixture’s capabilities, so there are no dark spots in the neighborhood. This feature is part of the lock-and-leave program and requires no thought on the part of the“Thehomeowner.folkshere call themselves the village people,” Gabriel laughed. “The homes still provide ample privacy at the front and back of the house, yet you are 30 seconds from getting that proverbial cup of sugar from your neighbor. It’s a small community — everyone knows each other and keeps an eye out for each other.”

Within the exclusive Texas Hill Country community of Cordillera Ranch exists what some might consider an even more exclusive neighborhood called Di Lusso Villas, comprised of lock-and-leave properties designed and built by Pasadera Builders.

“They also wanted the home to be a place that their imme diate family, including their grandchildren, would want to come and visit, so we designed the interior so it’s a fun place to be,” explained Gabriel. “The game room, which has a full competi tion shuffleboard table, billiards table and TV, was given top pri ority with a grand view of the landscape and golf course through the huge palladium window.”

“It’s not Italian or Tuscan, so it could be anywhere on the Iberian Peninsula, from what you might see in Spain, Portu gal or, frankly, in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. We used an integrally colored stucco with light cream tones so that it looks like it fits into any coastal vil lage on a hillside, which is apropos since this neighborhood cuts into the hillside,” saidPasaderaGabriel.also used aluminum clad wood interior windows with the appro priate mullions and a traditional terra cotta-toned clay tile for the roof, which is

When in the design phase for The Ben edira, the owners emphasized what they didn’t want was a contemporary look or the currently popular gray tones. Instead, they opted for a classic three-bedroom, three-bath Southern European-style home, which is 5,837 square feet and also comes with a wine cellar, loggia, covered terrace and a pool/spa.

“Here is where you’re going to see unique painted details in the millwork that stand out but are not overdone. We also used a selection of colors to bring in more color instead of a monotone look. We went with nice bright whites and deep blacks, all done in combination with exquisite countertops that support the look around them,” noted Gabriel. Additionally, they stayed away from the more common gray-toned wood floors by using a custom wood flooring finish with a warm, golden honey tone on the Europe an white oak to give it a softer feel.

It’s about using a lighting system to transform the interior architecture to an optically perfect lighting level,” said Gabriel, who first got into upper end residential construction in the Houston market in ’93.

Here, Gabriel and his astute team at Pasadera Builders did what they do best, and that’s listen closely to their clients.

“I relish and encourage all of our clients to chime in and participate in the design phase as much as possible. We tend to be more fluid with clients’ wants and needs, which is what we love because we feel we can deliver what a client’s expecting,” he said. Thankfully, there’s plenty of room left for Pasadera to build your own dream home in Di Lusso Villas and become a part of such a glorious community!

“Our clients are keen and drive design. We guide them along listening and interpreting, making sure the design of the house is congruent with itself. The rapid growth of Cordillera Ranch, and the Clubs membership, has continued into summer 2022 and, as always, we’re working to keep expanding Club and real estate offerings in this 9,100-acre Hill Country playground. In this Developer’s Corner article, we’ll provide a brief update on the rapid sales pace so far this year as well as a few exciting new areas on the planning horizon. Additionally, we’ve got some progress updates — and fresh renderings — of the much-anticipated Cabana renovation and expansion project.

DEVELOPERS CORNER

SALES REMAIN AS HOT AS THIS PAST SUMMER AND CABANA RENOVATION SET TO BEGIN

By Charlie Hill :: Renderings by Matt Kunkle, Marsh and Associates Sales activity in the community has continued on a torrid pace in 2022, though tight inventory has somewhat continued to be a limiting factor. Year-to-date through July, there have been 73 total lot sales in Cordillera Ranch, which is by far the highest amount of sales for that period over the past twelve years, with the exception of the 130 lot sales in the first seven months of 2021. Further, lot sales so far in 2022 have doubled the average number of sales through July over the 10 years prior to 2021. The average lot sales price so far in 2022 is $391k, but there is a wide range by neighborhood within the community.

Home sales have also remained strong so far in 2022, in spite of the continued tight supply of available homes. Year-to-date through July, there have been 31 homes sold (closed) and the average sales price for home (where price was disclosed) is $1.97MM ($395/sf), up 24% from the same period last year when the average was $1.59MM ($335/sf). As of mid-August, there are 12 homes available on MLS ranging from $1.3MM to $5.2MM, and the median price per square foot of available homes is $437/sf. The increasing prices and limited finished home inventory have driven more people to build instead of purchasing existing homes, thus new home construction remains at a record pace with 90 homes under construction (double the figure from three years ago) and another 87 in the POA architec tural design review process.

As a result of the continued sales activity, we are actively working on planning new phases of home sites throughout various parts of the community including a phase of 2-to-4-acre view home sites near the main entrance, another new phase in the Springs, which will include some Guadalupe River home sites as well a small pod of new home sites in Clubs Village with beautiful views across the valley. Additionally, the commencement of the Cabana renovation and expansion project is scheduled to begin following the end of the summer pool season, which is now upon us. Final details are wrapping up and demolition of some of the existing improve ments in the Cabana will begin in September. While we’re working to keep all of the remaining Club house facilities open and fully operational, please pardon the noise and construction traffic around the circle up on the hill in front of the Clubhouse. Be cause there will be lots of construction traffic coming in and out of the front of the Cabana as this work progresses, we’ll be temporarily closing off the circle drive up in front of the Locker/Fitness Building and Main Clubhouse to minimize interference and ensure safety. In the interim, we’ll move the valet stand out near the flagpoles (similar to how it has operated during some special events in the past) and cart staging near that area as well. Once construction starts, those parking spots in front of the Clubhouse buildings will be closed off and all parking will be in the lower parking lots. As soon as we get to a stage of the construction work where it is safe to allow vehicles back into those parking spaces up top, we’ll re-open that area. We are very excited to begin this first phase of Clubhouse renovation and expansion (with the second phase, kitchen expansion, imme diately following the Cabana renovation), and some current exterior renderings of the Cabana and pool snack bar are included with this article. As men tioned, we’ll be upgrading the interior to provide a modernized restaurant and bar experience with seat ing for over 80 people inside as well was 30+ under a new covered patio outside, as well as adding new restrooms inside the Cabana dedicated to this restaurant. Additionally, the plans include new patio and bar areas on the north side of the existing snack bar so members can enjoy one of the best views on the property and soak in Hill Country sunsets. The construction activity will undoubtedly create some headaches and disruptions but the Club staff and construction team are going to do everything pos sible to minimize disturbance so members can con tinue to fully enjoy the Main Clubhouse and Locker/ Fitness areas throughout construction. We appreci ate everyone’s patience and understanding during this work — it’s going to be worth the added noise and dust that comes with a project like this! We are targeting having the Cabana exterior complete prior to next pool season so the pools can be open for summer enjoyment, and we’ll update on a targeted re-opening of the Cabana once we get deeper into the construction work.
