Train Station Issues Flagged Up EnAble Thetford is a group funded by People’s Health Trust with money raised through local health lotteries and supported by the Royal Voluntary Service. Since 2019 they have been engaging with local people to find out what they think about the access to platforms at Thetford Train Station. The overwhelming response is that many residents find the station difficult to use, especially if you have mobility aids, need to use a pushchair, or have heavy luggage. Thetford Station has a number of unused buildings
The footbridge at Thetford Station is the only way of crossing the tracks and getting from one platform to another
The group recently held a meeting where Jack Weaver, the Greater Thetford Partnership (GTP) Manager was able to update the group on the work he has been undertaking regarding the station site. Jack was able to put the situation into context for the group, in relation to Government policy, the railway industry and infrastructure issues. The most pressing issue is the footbridge and having accessible access to each platform. Jack explained that although permission was in place to install a step free bridge at the ticket office end of the platform, unfortunately there was no funding in place. He would like to see a partnership created similar to the one set up by Fenland District Council and Network Anglia. The partnership worked together on several projects for investments in 3 stations, March, Whittlesea and Manea. Wymondham, Attleborough and Thetford will be significant commuter stations and could join up to make a partnership bookended by Norwich & Ely. Jack would also like to see the vacant station building brought back into use, possibly as flexible office space. One of the biggest issues is the length of time it can take to get the partnership and funding in place. It took 10 years for the Fenland partnership.
The group said their research flagged up several issues with station users. One was the lack of toilets and ticketing provision on each platform, some users said that they had had issues where they had struggled over the footbridge only to need to go back again to use the toilet facilities. The opening hours of the ticket office and toilet facilities were also an issue. Jack said that unfortunately the train station was not fit for purpose long term. With the dramatic increase in population by the time Kingsfleet development is finished in 2043 there could be over 12,500 more people living in the town. A short term solution would be to make access to the train more easy from the north side, however there are various land ownership issues with this. The most logical would be a new footbridge. Network Rail view the current bridge as becoming not fit for purpose within 10 – 20 years. The current bridge was installed in the 1840s and is part of the grade 2 listing of the station, so would need to be conserved. For people currently facing issues using the station, even 10 years is too long to wait for improvements. Jack said that for him the station was a priority and that he is working hard behind the scenes to deliver a solution. Transport is the first objective for GTP and he is working with both Network Rail and Greater Anglia and is part of the conversation between Norwich and Ely to lobby for investment from Government. “There’s a real opportunity, but anything you want to do is intrinsically expensive’ he explained. Network Rail work on a 5-year funding round, and to line this up with Government funding is difficult. Jack said he feels that community rail is the way to go forward, a successful model has been used in Essex and Transport East have a new strategy coming up for consultation that Thetford could feed into. School Recognised For Forest School Provision Drake Primary School and Little Pirates Child Care are celebrating its success at becoming a Recognised Forest School Provider by offering children an opportunity to experience ‘good practice’ Forest School. Sara Farish, known as Sara Star, runs the sessions as the Forest School Leader and has done since becoming qualified in 2017. “As soon as I saw the Forest School Association’s (FSA) Recognised Forest School Provider Scheme I knew this was one for us. Children love their weekly session attending Forest School and our staff and volunteers are fully engaged and committed to this approach. We know that having this recognition will give us something that other schools do not and are extremely proud to be the first currently recognised provider in Norfolk”. Gareth Wyn Davies, CEO of the FSA says, “Good Forest School practice is being followed by dedicated Forest School professionals all over the UK. Forest School is a distinct learning approach based on a set of 6 principles. Our scheme helps people identify those providers who are following good Forest School practice and distinguishes them from other outdoor education that is not Forest School. We therefore congratulate Drake Primary School and Little Pirates Child Care on their success at becoming an approved ‘Good practice’ provider.”

Successful applicants are added to the map on the FSA’s website: www.forestschoolassociation.org/ find-a-forest-school-provider/ For parents wondering where to send their children it is important to know that a provider is operating professionally. As so often happens, this column originated from a fairly mundane conversation – on this occasion with my wife. Disturbed from messing about on my phone my response to the bald statement, “You need a project!” was a non-committal grunt and hasty descent back into a West Ham Twitter wormhole. Mrs F, as is usually the case, was right – and after some consideration, as well as agreeing the Hammers manager David Moyes should definitely drop Said Benrahma for Manuel Lanzini out on our left, the decision was made that, as a fairly new resident of Thetford a really good way of getting to know our lovely town would be to combine passions and walk every street before blogging the results.
History is not a strong suit, so books were bought and chapters devoured. Another conversation followed, this time with a fellow sufferer in the claret and blue and not only an agreement of the thorny left-side issue at the London Stadium but the news I was becoming “A flaneur”. “Ha ha”, I replied, “I suppose I am...” Both at the time and now with further consideration I reckon that was a pretty good ploy to cover up the fact I had not a clue what a flaneur was or did. After a brief flick through my Chambers Dictionary, then a longer browse in Wikipedia it became clear that no, a flaneur has nothing to do with a face cloth, but is a French term (quelle surprise!) that literally means ‘stroller’ or ‘saunterer’ and referred to an “Ambivalent figure of urban affluence... detached from society with no other purpose than to be an acute observer of contemporary life.” A quick dissection would reveal some truth to this description, in my case, even if nobody who has met me would ever describe me as a “gentleman”. As to ambivalence, I offer a meaty ‘Hell yeah!’ Urban yes, if not urbane... and affluent probably,
I am still in possession of all my own teeth! ‘Detached from society’ is a sad reality for far too many of us suffering the financial and emotional scars of Covid lockdown. As to ‘acute’ or ‘observer of contemporary life’ I’ll let others be the judge – but here are a couple of early impressions: Firstly, an apology... Having lived all my adult life in or around Bury St Edmunds I was completely immersed in the popular view Thetford is an awful place, second only to “That London” in terms of disrepair and social decay. Having now lived here over a year I could not have been more wrong. The town has so many pretty walks, and is inhabited by more than its fair share of lively and friendly residents. Secondly, there are lot of trees about aren’t there? A favourite hobby is huffing up the 90 steps of the castle (believe me, I count them every single time) and admiring the view, over 180 degrees of which is forest. More on that as we go on... In conclusion, my lovely wife was right, I really should spend more time out and about and fewer hours gazing at the Samsung. I wonder, does anybody else feel the same about their partner? Miles walked since last column: 0 Cumulative miles walked: 0 Terry Land Editor’s Note: This guest article is from Terry Land, who has lived in Thetford for just 16 months after spending his adult life in and around Bury St Edmunds. Now retired from work due to covid his former employment included working for a decade as a sub-editor on the sport benches of both the Sun and Mirror newspapers. In an effort to get to know his new space, he’s embarked on a personal challenge to walk every street of the town learning some history and recording his impressions for About Thetford magazine as he goes.”

Thetford Singers Triumphant Return It’s difficult to say who was more delighted, the audience or Thetford Singers themselves, as they held their first public performance in two years at Thetford Methodist Church. Christmas Favourites was the perfect selection of festive songs performed amongst the atmospheric Tree Festival to a thrilled audience. The programme was put together by the singers themselves along with their Musical Director, Chris Parsons and featured guest soloist John Holland Avery. Chris welcomed the audience by saying, “We hope tonight to bring some joy back into your lives. It is so good to see real people in a real venue.” Alison Northover welcomed the audience on behalf of Thetford Singers and said they were delighted to see so many people. The community choir has welcomed several new members recently who were also performing for the first time. During the three lock downs and whilst live singing together was prohibited, Thetford Singers were singing together using Zoom for rehearsals with Chris directing from home, but unable to hear everyone singing at the same time. It’s a testament to the work that Chris and the Singers themselves have put in over the past years that they were able to come together and sing so eloquently.
Thetford Singers performing live for the first time since their 2019 Christmas Concert
Opening with the upbeat ‘Now is the time of Christemas’ by Edmund Jolliffe, Thetford Singers were back to their best. Fiona Barnett provided the perfect accompaniment on the piano throughout the programme of 15 songs. Every song was finished by a loud round of applause by an appreciative audience. The evening finished with everyone including the Mayor and Mayoress of Thetford, joining in with Hark the Herald Angels. News From TADDS Well it’s the first month of 2022 for TADDS and what a difference a year makes! No group running in 2020 and back to full strength in 2021. But as the saying goes - It’s been a funny old year. After a tremendous December for us which also included our Christmas Meal and Santa, we restart our group on Friday 7th January at 10am. We are already planning our group activities for 2022, and plan to have lots on offer to our group members through the coming year, and hope to have some popular favourites back to our group, plus a little mix of other treats. Our group is open to anyone who is looking for help and support following a diagnosis of dementia or whilst going through the process; you don’t need to be professionally referred to us, you just need to get in touch and this can be done by email or phone. In particular I would like to say a huge thank you to each of our volunteers who have given their time freely at the group week in and week out. A special thank you goes to Mark and Laine Skinner who supported our memorial event with memorial brochures and hearts for the tree and a big big thank you to Rev Matt Houghton and the Cloverfields Community Church Team for continuing to provide our venue and making it covid safe for people.
Special thank you’s for fundraising for our group go to Doreen Harvey and Linda Stow Butcher and the BP Norwich Road Team; both made a significant contribution towards TADDS funds which helped fund some the lovely things we did last year. As it’s still only January, I will share a Christmas picture of Santa and Tipsy Elf (Linda Stow Butcher) with Yvonne (far left) and Jo, Trustees of the group. You are not alone and we can still give that support via phone call, email, Zoom even if you don’t come to the group. So don’t be afraid or embarrassed to seek the help you need and deserve. Thetford Lions Club Closes With great regret and sadness Thetford Lions Club will cease meeting from the start of 2022. Falling membership numbers means we can no longer guarantee to provide the level of service to the community and people of Thetford that we have provided for the last nearly 50 years. In that time, we have helped at innumerable town activities as stewards and general assistance. We have organised many quizzes and social events which raised large sums of money to help those in our community whose needs fell through the cracks in the system. We also arranged for Thetford to become part of the international Peace Pole movement, and our pole in the King’s House Gardens will remain to remind future generations of us. For 22 years we ran a highly successful swimming gala which attracted swimmers with disabilities from all over East Anglia. Several Paralympians had their first taste of a swimming competition in Thetford. Our primary aim was to serve the people
of Thetford so we have decided to disburse our assets to organisations which our members felt would carry on this tradition. As a result, the stock of books and bric-a-brac items which we sold at our popular street stall will be donated to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices & Mencap charity shops. Our charitable funds will be given to Fincham’s Turnaround Stays, Stroke Association, TADDS, Thetford Bulldogs Football Club, and the Thetford Music Project. Stay Safe From Scammers Do you know how to stay safe, while going green? Recent research by Citizens Advice has found that in the East of England 64% of adults are thinking about making their homes more energy efficient in the next 12 months. But 31% said they have already been targeted by a green scam. Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District has five top tips to stay safe when making your home more energy efficient: • Do your research. Before you buy anything, check the company or website you’re using. Read reviews on different websites, ask for references, verify the company’s details using external sources, and read any terms and conditions. • Check certified schemes. When looking for a trader to use, check certified schemes that recommend traders, like TrustMark - the Government’s endorsed quality scheme.
• Get written quotes and a contract. Try to get quotes from at least three different contractors to help you decide if you’re getting a fair price. Once you’ve decided, always get a written contract before you give a contractor the goahead. If something goes wrong it can help get what you paid for, or at least get some of your money back.
Citizens Advice, Thetford and District are able to provide you with advice on avoiding scams
immediately if you’ve handed over any financial and sensitive information or made a payment.
Report Offline scams, like telephone, post and doorstep, via the Citizens Advice consumer service by calling 0808 223 1133. Report online scams to the dedicated Scams Action service on 0808 250 5050. Text scams can be reported to your mobile phone provider by forwarding it to 7726. You can also report the scam to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. For information and advice, contact Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District via the Norfolk Adviceline: 0800 144 8848 or email via our website: www.cadat.org.uk
• Pay with a secure method. Credit cards offer the most protection, followed by PayPal or debit card. If you’re paying for large home improvement works, see if you can pay in stages, and avoid paying for costs up-front where possible.
FULLY INSURED & PART P ELECTRICIAN DOMESTIC, COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL WORK UNDERTAKEN
• Be suspicious. Scammers and rogue traders can be very smart. Take your time to make sure you’re happy with your decision - if someone pressures you or contacts you out of the blue, it’s most likely a scam. If you’ve been scammed, talk to your bank or card company

Past & Present
The Anchor Hotel in Bridge Street site played a central part in the life of the town for over 400 years. At one time it was known as the Blue Anchor, and in 1902, the Reynolds Anchor Commerical Hotel. It featured in Egon Ronay’s Good Hotel Guide in 1969 and the cast of Dad’s Army enjoyed its hospitality in the 1970s, along with a host of other stars such as Sir Bruce Forsyth. The final incarnation of the Anchor Hotel was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Riverside development. The building on the far right is the sole surviver from the site despite a local campaign to save the complex. All I Want For Christmas Is… No More UK Red List How lucky we are to call the UK’s green and pleasant lands home. But whilst we thrive on its increasingly changing landscapes, some of our bird species are less fortunate. As some of you may be aware, this month saw the release of Birds of Conservation Concern 5, the latest review of the status of 245 species with breeding, passage or wintering populations in the UK. The review, which uses data collected in-large by our incredible BTO volunteers, has assessed each species according to a set of criteria, placing them on either the Green, Amber or Red Lists to indicate increasing levels of conservation concern. This past year, the Red List has reached a very unwelcome peak of 70 species, and is almost double the length of that in the first review in 1996. The Red List now includes the once very familiar House Martin and Swift which, sadly, have seen population declines of 57% and 58% respectively. One bird that has moved from Green to Amber-listed, which may surprise some of you, is the Woodpigeon. Yet, this reallocation isn’t because of a decline in population; in fact, quite the opposite. Woodpigeon numbers have swelled here in the UK which is likely a result of changes to agricultural practices. The UK now holds over 20% of Europe’s Woodpigeons, making our population internationally important. The plight of farmland, woodland and upland birds which were highlighted in previous reviews, are still very much of concern today. Indeed, more species have been Red-listed. Wintering wildfowl and wader species that visit the UK, which again for many, we hold internationally important populations, are also a concern. Bewick’s Swan, Goldeneye, Smew and Dunlin have also joined the Red list. Thankfully, it is not all bad news. You’ll be glad to hear that Song Thrush, Pied Flycatcher, Grey
Dunlins have now joined the Red list Image: Edmund Fellowes / BTO
Wagtail, Redwing and Black Redstart have moved off the Red List to Amber, as each have seen their population increase. Due to successful reintroduction projects, the White-tailed Eagle has also moved from Red to Amber-listed. Other species, however, have arrived in the UK of their own accord. Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, Little Bittern and Black-winged Stilt have all colonised the UK and are now breeding here. Whilst we welcome such new additions to our wildlife, it is important to recognise the arrival of new species is likely the result of climate change, and the effects we are having on the environment. With the release of the updated UK Red List and the coming New Year, there is no better time to reflect and review our own behaviours; are we really doing enough to help stem the flow of loss and change to our bird species? Emily Cuff, BTO

Help With The Cost Of Neutering Happy New Year to all readers of this magazine. With the start of a new year, female cats are now coming into season and getting pregnant. They are sexually mature as young as 4 months of age and can have a litter of kittens by the time they are six months old and not fully grown themselves. Therefore it is important that all cats, whether male or female are neutered to help keep the cat population down. Neutering male cats stops them wandering off, getting into fights over female cats and picking up diseases such as Feline Aids, Cat Flu and Feline Leukaemia. Cats can sadly also acquire nasty abscesses from the fights that they get into with other male cats which often need veterinary treatment. Male cats spray themselves with their own urine, which is like an aftershave to attract females and can be very smelly. This disappears once they are neutered. They can also develop testicular cancer if they are not neutered. Female cats if left unneutered can have up to three litters of kittens a year which can be very ageing for them. They can also acquire mammary tumours and an infected uterus known as pyometra if they are not neutered. Most times cats have their kittens perfectly normally, but sometimes things can go wrong and they will need veterinary intervention. If a large kitten was to get stuck in the birth canal, for instance and a caesarian section is needed. This can be very expensive, anything up to £1000. It is much cheaper to have your female cat neutered to avoid large vet bills.
All vets charge different prices for the cost of neutering, so it is best to shop around and see where you get the best deal. We are still looking for indoor fosterers for our cats, in the areas IP24 - IP28. If you have a spare room, that has a washable floor you maybe able to help us. All expenses are paid so that you are not out of pocket – it is just your time that is required. It can be rewarding seeing a homeless cat go off to a lovely new home. And there are many more cats waiting to come into our care which means you wouldn't be without a cat for very long. It would also help if you are a car driver. If you would like any further information, please call our help line number below. If you need any help or advice or help with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018.
If you are on a low income or know of anyone of your friends or neighbours who would qualify, we can help with the cost of neutering. We can give a voucher for £25 towards the cost of neutering a male cat and £40 towards the cost of neutering a female cat. You can take the voucher to any vets and then you will have to pay the difference.

Not Just Books Happy New Year to you all and here’s to 2022 being a bit more normal than 2021 was! We’re really looking forward to the Thetford Player’s Panto this year (oh yes we are!!!) and to celebrate we’ve got an Alice themed window for January. Looking further forward, we’ll also be bringing the oral story telling tradition to Thetford with the fabulous Hugh Lupton who will be performing his The Mardling Acre for us on 11th February. Tickets will be available through the lovely Leaping Hare Box Office. As always, we like to share our picks of the fiction and children’s releases for the month. January’s Indie Book of the Month Little Wing by Freya North will be available to buy from indie bookshops from the 14th January, a week before the official publication date! Little Wing is the powerful story of two families over three generations. In the 1960s, a pregnant 16-year-old is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross. Between Camden, Colchester and the Outer Hebrides, the three story lines collide when secrets are uncovered and answers sought. Little Wing is a novel about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone. This is Freya’s 15th novel and we were lucky enough to get a proof copy to read – we hope you enjoy this powerful and moving novel as much as we did.
A joyful, glorious collision of classic boardingschool story with vibrant 1990s Nigeria; Jummy at the River School is a mystery that explores issues of justice, class and poverty. Jummy has won a place at the River School, the finest girls’ boarding school in Nigeria. Nothing can dampen her spirits, not even when she learns that her less fortunate best friend Caro won’t be joining her. By the Shine-Shine River, school is everything Jummy dreamt of, with friendly new girls, midnight feasts and sporting prizes. But when Caro suddenly arrives at the school to work, not to learn, Jummy must bring all her friends together to help. Did you know that Not Just Books is part of the National Book Tokens scheme? That means that you can both purchase National Book Tokens from us and redeem those gift cards that you got for Christmas! As Sara Coleridge wrote “January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow” and what better to do than hunker down on a snowy evening with a book and a mug of something warming? We look forward to helping you with your book needs!

Thetford Inner Wheel A successful coffee morning was held last October at a member’s house when £550 was raised. It was decided to send donations of £100 to Thetford Salvation Army and Thetford Foodbank plus £70 to buy blankets for ShelterBox. At our November meeting plans were made for decorating a tree at the Methodist Christmas Tree Festival which would involve a lot of paper folding! Members decorated the tree with the theme of music. As is usual Thetford Inner Wheel was represented at the Remembrance Day Parade. After a very enjoyable dinner at our meeting held in November, Jane James (left) from Not Just Books gave us a fascinating insight into how she set up her new business. Despite the covid pandemic, a possible flood, suffering Covid herself and enduring a lockdown, her first year had been a success. As the title of her shop might suggest, there is more going on in the bookshop than just selling books. There are events for all age groups from Dinosaurs to Dungeons and Dragons to a Book Club. Just to add to all this she is this year’s Deputy Town Mayor!

Eating chocolate makes my skin breakout in spots! False. Chocolate does not cause Mobile: 07507 662554 breakouts. If I shave hairs to remove them, they will grow back thicker and stronger? False. There is no way shaving can stimulate the roots of hairs. However, the hairs may appear thicker because the fine tapered end of the hair has been removed making the hair look and feel thicker. Are the white marks on my nails caused by Calcium deficiency? False. It is not a deficiency in calcium that causes white spots but there are several other reasons we may get them. It could be injury to the nail base, bad manicure procedures pushing back cuticles too harshly, an allergic reaction to things like polishes or polish remover even some hard hardeners. Acrylic nails can also cause trauma. Liver disease, like hepatitis and cirrhosis, is one of the more serious causes of white spotted fingernails. I am thinking of having some sunbeds before my holiday to prevent my skin from burning. False. A sunbed will not protect your skin from burning simply because you have accelerated the melanin ( pigment ) in your skin. There is no such thing as a ‘safe ‘ tan, the skin goes darker in colour because it is trying to protect the body from ultra-violet light. The U.K now has the highest reported cases of skin cancer in the world! Not something for us to be proud of. It has never been more important to be sensible & prevent burning or over exposing the skin to sun damage and wearing a high factor 25/30 sunblock. Wishing You a Happy & Healthy New Year! Happy New Year From Thetford U3A A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all our members. I hope you had a peaceful Christmas. We held our Christmas Party on 9th December which proved very popular as we had over 80 members attend. It was very sad that the Ruby Sisters could not attend and we send them our good wishes. The Carnegie (Tom) saved the day as he had carols recorded which gave us a very lovely atmosphere, plus we all had quiz papers which kept us occupied. Thank you everyone who provided food and many thanks to the committee for organising this afternoon at fairly short notice. The next meeting will be Frazer Harrison speaking on the subject of Thomas Paine on 27th January at 2pm (poster adjacent). Our sign language group has restarted and we have several new members wanting to join. Our next Thetford U3A meeting will take place on the 14th January at 2.30pm at the United Reformed Church. All other Thetford U3A groups are on our website, complete with names and telephone numbers of all the group leaders who’ll be delighted to hear from you. Details of our talks are on also available on our website.

"When we 'go on a diet' we are sending a subconscious message to ourselves that we must be restricted, unhappy and hungry to see weight loss success. At Slimming World, this goes against everything we stand for, our plan is full of healthy, delicious meals that are designed to satisfy your appetite, feed the whole family, and enable you to enjoy your food without the burden or worry of weight gain. In fact, our plan is so sophisticated, we actually eat fewer calories when relying on the filling 'FREE' (unlimited) foods, than we otherwise would-which is how we lose weight without counting a single calorie. We also know that food is only half the battle when losing weight, which is why we have weekly group sessions to share ideas, tips, celebrate our successes and get the necessary support to make this a healthy lifestyle change that we can stick with forever. My message this January for anyone who wants to lose weight is, join Slimming World and you'll never diet again." Tina's groups meet weekly at the Methodist Church in Thetford on Wednesday at 6pm and Thursday at 9.30am. You could be eligible for 12 weeks FREE support at Slimming World. Dignitaries Welcomed At RAF Honington Visit RAF Honginton was honoured to host a number of local dignitaries on a bright but chilly December day. HM Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk Lady Clare Countess of Euston, Air Vice-Marshal the Honourable David Murray, Vice Chair of West Suffolk Council Councillor Mike Chester and Mayor of Thetford Councillor Mike Brindle were invited to the station to observe current training and development output from RAF Honington. The highlight of the day was in no doubt the Trainee Gunner Graduation, which they attended and observed as VIP guests. The Graduations are a particularly special day for the Station as we welcome families and friends to share the celebration of the newly graduated RAF Regiment Gunners following 20 weeks of successful but intensive training.

As we continue to experiment with new technology and equipment, Virtual Reality is just one capability that we are currently trialling to see how it may benefit current training methods. The guests even got to trial it for themselves.

Station Commander Group Captain Dutch Holland said: “Today the graduating RAF Regiment Gunners of El Alamein Flt proudly wear their coveted Regimental ‘Mudguard’ for the first time”.
Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Mike Brindle said; “RAF Honington has been granted the Freedom of Thetford so it was a special pleasure to keep up the close links between Thetford and our nearby RAF Station, home to the RAF Regiment. It was great to meet the Station Commander, Group Captain Holland and Station Warrant Officer Mac Macdonald who is a well-known Thetford resident. RAF Honington was at its best, friendly but well organised and ready for anything. A great day”.
Following a formal parade with live music, this time provided by the Band of the Royal Air Safer Thetford Action Group Force, the graduates are reunited with their Public Meeting - Thursday 6th January 2022, loved ones. #DriveToArrive This Winter Welcome to my first blog of the New Year – 2021 seems to have flown by! This is the time of the year when we traditionally see an increase in opportunist crime, and I mentioned last month some of our top tips for crime prevention with our #KeepItChristmas campaign. During the festive period if you are aware that a neighbour is away, I would ask that you please keep an eye on their property and to contact us if you see anything suspicious. You can report non-emergency incidents via our 101 number or online at www.norfolk.police.uk. In an emergency always dial 999. If you are out and about celebrating with friends and family, please know your limits and look out for other members of your group. The weather is now taking a turn for worse, and temperatures have really dropped off with some hard over-night frosts. Remember to always #DriveToArrive – it is always best to arrive late than never get there. Have a plan for any nights out - who is the driver for the night? Are you getting a taxi, or have you arranged a lift from a family friend? Whatever you do, never be tempted to drink and drive. You could ruin someone else’s life as well as your own.
With the cold and dark mornings and nights, whether you are driving to or from work or making a social journey make sure your vehicle is fully road legal and ready to take on the weather. Make sure tyres, fluid levels, lights and batteries are checked and ready for the demands that this time of the year presents. Also, take a little extra time in the morning to make sure your windscreens are fully defrosted and clear prior to starting any journey, and be prepared for ice on the roads. Please keep safe and remember not to leave any vehicle unattended while the engine is running. I want to wish you a happy and very safe New Year. I look forward to continue working and meeting with you all in 2022. PC Paula Gilluley, Thetford Police

After our last meeting it had been anticipated that we would be brandishing our own cinema environment in time for November’s gathering but, unfortunately, this was not to be. Following a delivery hitch the problem was overcome by crew members Steve and Jean who came to the rescue with their own set-up consisting of a ten foot screen with hi-fi sound and vision equipment. This, in conjunction with David’s video recording of ‘The World's Greatest Air Shows’ compensated for any disappointments. Not only did the film depict clips of barnstorming pioneers in action – some out of action - but also, aeronautical participants from all periods leading up to the modern day. Our December meeting was a dark and stormy night when the crew of the WNAS returned to the Mundford Bowls Club base. The few that didn’t make it back for fear that their high sided vehicles would be overturned in the wind deprived themselves of entertainment they will regret for weeks to come.
Steve and Jean again, provided the ammunition Safe Gas 1/4th Advert_Layout 1 08/12/2016 07:54 to Page 1 at the ten foot screen. It took the form of shoot long range stills that Steve had shot himself with a camera that could compress an image from two miles into two feet; the same distance that existed between participants’ wing tips. The fighter squadrons in the field of view were multinational: those represented were British, French, Spanish, Italian, American and Jordanian. It was the consensus of opinion in the mess that the Italians were best and, having met all crews, it was Steve’s opinion that the Jordanians were the Plumbing & Heating specialists friendliest. Life In Ethiopia – A Talk For Probus Members began the meeting with a minute’s silence in memory of Jim Stanley whose death occurred recently. This was followed by a happier moment when Tom Muir was introduced as a new member. Tom, who is an engineer, will be remembered by many people for running the Thomas Paine Hotel for 15 years. At the meeting, Pat Alker spoke about her years of charity involvement with the people of Ethiopia. She introduced many of the children and adults whom she and her husband have met during their various trips to the country. She then explained how improvements have been made to the road network, working outwards from the capital Addis Ababa, and how large numbers of water points have been installed, although there remain many outlying areas where these are still needed. Various international charities have supported the government’s improvements, but there has also been major financial assistance from China, this now extending to the building of factories which generate employment opportunities. Despite these infrastructure improvements, there are major problems in this huge country (equal in area to Spain and France together), some interracial, especially the long-running conflict
Tom Muir being welcomed by Probus Chairman David Childerhouse
with the rebels in the northern province of Tigray, causing many people to flee south where they can encounter refugees from Sudan. There are also the political pressures associated with the involvement of China, but Pat hopes to be able to continue supporting the people that she loves. Thetford Probus welcomes retired business and professional people to its weekly meetings. If you would be interested in joining us, our Secretary, John MacPherson can be contacted by e-mail: john.bet@btinternet.com

Consider Air Source Heat Pumps With the recent ambitious Government decarbonisation targets and rising costs of gas, there has never been a better time to consider air source heat pumps. This April a new government grant scheme comes into place to help homeowners to install air source heat pumps and air to air source heat pumps. The main difference between the two systems is that you can have air cooling as well as heat with air-toair source, rather than just heat with air source. Findlay Heating and Cooling Ltd are one of the most experienced companies in the area offering this new technology. An air source heat pump is a reverse cycle refrigeration system that extracts heat from the ambient air and compresses it, converting it through a heat exchanger into the water used in the heating primary circuits. For the system to work efficiently certain criteria needs to be met.
Marcus Findlay with a recently installed air source heat pump
Findlay Heating & Cooling Ltd are gas safe registered, OFTEC registered, OFTEC for working with oil registered and on the FGas Register for working with refrigerants. Marcus is also a Valliant Advanced Mastertec recommended installer with homesafe qualifications. An example of an underfloor heating manifold
Findlay Heating and Cooling Ltd also offer hybrid systems which incorporates the use of an air to water air source heat pump and either a gas or oil-fired boiler. Marcus Findlay says, “You must get a reliable, experienced company to quote for the correct system for your property to avoid costly mistakes. We offer a free of charge survey with a heat loss calculation to ensure the system will work.” Many new systems incorporate underfloor heating; however, Marcus says this is not essential but the size of the radiators in your rooms will need to be increased. “The future with decarbonisation for the domestic heating industry will be a lot of electric heating, we’re in the midst of a bit of an industrial revolution at the moment. Things are in a period of change. It’s really important that people find a company that can embrace this and have the knowledge to put new technologies into practice. Findlay Heating and Cooling Ltd have the experience to make sure that all of your heating requirements will meet ongoing government regulations.”

Challenge Success Helps Local Charities Thetford Grandmother, Vasanti Patel is celebrating after completing her second climb challenge and raising over £1,000 for her chosen charities. My WiSH Charity at West Suffolk Hospital and Life Is 4 Living in Thetford have each benefited from a £550 donation thanks to Vasanti climbing the Castle Hill steps an epic 1,000 times. Originally Vasanti planned her challenge to finish in February, however the plucky 72 year old quickly managed to complete the 176,000 steps by November. Vasanti chose both charities for very specific reasons. Having originally been inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 100 challenge, she wanted to support an NHS charity. Vasanti also wanted to encourage older people to get active and thought that Life is 4 Living was the perfect project closer to home. June Lewis from Life is 4 Living said the group were delighted that Vasanti wanted to support them, “We’re a friendly group offering a regular exercise class for older people. To keep mobile as we age is so important and we’re grateful that Vasanti’s funding will help us achieve this.” Vasanti said that she was delighted with the amount she had raised and wanted to

Club Looks Back On A Successful Season Thetford Town Cricket Club have had a successful season on and off the pitch in 2021. The 1st team secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in over 30 years and their Club Secretary won Unsung Hero at the recent ECB Norfolk Grassroots Cricket Awards.
Natalie with her award
Natalie Chisholm was nominated by club Chairman Mick Piggott, who said, “Natalie first joined our club in 2017 as a parent of a junior player. It wasn’t long before Natalie was immersing herself in all aspects of the club.
Natalie helped out with organising social events and was instrumental in the most successful All Out Music fundraising event ever (raising over £8000). Now on the committee, she is the link between Norfolk Cricket Board and the club. When Covid hit, TTCC were one of the first clubs to open up training and this was down to the understanding of compliance, combined with an unbelievable work ethic that made TTCC a safe haven to practice and play cricket. She was also instrumental in the set up of our All Stars and Dynamos initiative for junior members. We are so grateful to have her.” Thetford Town Cricket Club is a friendly club that develops players of all ages and abilities. We have three senior teams playing Saturday and Sunday and four junior teams (girls, boys and mixed). For more information please visit the website: www.thetfordtown.play-cricket.com
Thetford Parkrun This is often a time when we consider New Year’s resolutions, and we’d love you to consider us!
We are a free, weekly event held every Saturday at 9am at Abbey Meadows (IP24 1BB). The event is a 5km course, where you can run, walk, jog or a mix of all three. We are a friendly and inclusive group! Let me help with some myth busting… “I am going to be too slow, I haven’t ever run!” There is no such thing as being too slow, we have participants who finish the course in 17 minutes and others that finish the course in an hour. Everyone gets the same encouragement and support regardless of their speed. You’ll never be last, we have a volunteer tail walker who will always come in last and support you”. “I don’t know anyone, so I will feel awkward” You may arrive feeling nervous but we are all friendly, and you’ll speak to our first timer briefing volunteer. At the finish line we regularly have people chatting and catching their breath – a perfect place and time to introduce yourself. We have had many great friendships made at parkrun! If you aren’t new to parkrun, we always need volunteers. Please make it your resolution to volunteer at least twice this year with us. Thetford Sisters’ Delight As Both Receive England Call Ups Sisters from Thetford are celebrating a remarkable double after both were named in the England Short Mat Bowls under 21 squad. In September Chloe Suffolk, 13, travelled to Solihull to represent Norfolk in the National Under 18 Championships and played so well that she was invited to join the National under 21 squad. Now, remarkably, Chloe’s sister Kacy, 11, has also been selected for the squad, making it double delight in the Suffolk household. Speaking after her selection Kacy said: “I was really pleased when Chloe got picked, but now I’ve been picked too it’s really exciting. I can’t wait for me and Chloe to hopefully play for England.” Both girls are members of the Thetford Short Mat Bowls Club, which is very proud of its young players.
