Cheers to tours and tastings at

Frome Valley Vineyard In a truly beautiful corner of Herefordshire, Frome Valley Vineyard, vine-growing has become a genuinely English art form, creating a range of distinctive and delicious products to please every palate. Alongside this awardwinning viticulture, the enthusiastic family behind the business also offers a great day out for visitors to enjoy leisurely ‘Tours and Tastings,’ gaining a relaxed education while enjoying quality time in lush and scenic countryside. Frome Valley Vineyard stands above the River Frome, surrounded

by the county’s bountiful cider orchards and hop yards near Bishops Frome and is centred in picturesque 16th and 17th century farm buildings belonging to the original Paunton Court farm estate. Here, the vineyard was first established some 35 years ago, making it one of the earlier entries to the English wine-making scene. It was acquired by Jeanie and Ian Falconer in 2005, benefiting from what they describe as ‘a benevolent microclimate and a sumptuous terroir of clay loam.’

Now assisted by the wider family, theirs is a determinedly sustainable venture. The grapes are nurtured by hand and make both still and sparkling wines, some single varietals and some blended to bring out the unique taste of ‘the terroir.’ They also make brandy, while the apple orchard recently added cider to the repertoire. A flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep help keep the grass down and the soil fertile, while the buildings are heated by biomass and solar panels. Much of the land is given over to wildlifefriendly pasture, pond and woods.

Guided ‘Tours and Tastings’ are friendly and personal, generally last about two hours and accommodate up to 20 people. Highly popular with groups such as Women’s Institutes, Rotary Clubs, social groups and civilised hen parties, they include a visit to the ‘Model Vineyard’ to learn some growers’ fundamentals, move on to the

main vineyard for insights into practicalities and then proceed to the shop to taste, savour and compare Frome Valley’s plentiful delights with an expert tutor.

Relax, fish and explore from idyllic Devon hideaway Peace and relaxation are assured at the beautiful Fairwater Lodges glampsite, with purpose-made shepherd’s huts set in idyllic Devon countryside on a 13 acre smallholding, all with their own wood-fired hot tubs. The huts are geared to couples or family stays, each with a king sized bed, modern bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, log burner, sofabed, satellite TV and DVD player and outdoor seating area with fire pit. They are owned and run by a family – Lee, Kate and their daughter, Becca - so guests enjoy a personal welcome and help with any requests they have to make their holiday extra special or perhaps celebrate a big occasion. Guests can also bring a dog. Based in Hemyock, a village near Devon/Somerset border, the site is well placed for visits to the seaside, including Sidmouth with its famous donkey sanctuary and Minehead, ‘Gateway to Exmoor’ and the Jurassic Coast. Rural Escapes Rural escapes don’t come more idyllic than the selection our advertisers offer in scenic hidden corners of the UK. Choose any of these destinations and you’ll soon feel you’re in an entirely different world to the land of concrete, roadworks and traffic jams you left behind. These are all stress-busting locations, rich in the relaxation wrought by being close to nature, whether you’re glamping or perhaps enjoying a little indulgent ‘me time’ in a quality bed & breakfast. They enable people to wind down and enjoy an unhurried quality of life. Once you’re nicely chilled out there’s lots to enjoy out and about. Take the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its imposing mountains provide an exhilarating backdrop for walkers, while attractive towns such as Llandovery and Brecon itself have charming shops and great places to reward yourself after all those outdoor exertions. Also in Wales, the island of Anglesey offers great variety, wonderful beaches and an exquisite offering for anyone interested in geology, with more than 100 different kinds of rocks to be hunted down, among them pillow lava, deep red jasper, lime green epidote and milky calcite. Castle lovers will love Beaumaris, the last and largest of Edward I’s ‘Iron Ring’ of fortresses in North Wales. Once discovered, the big skies of North Yorkshire beckon almost everyone’s inner explorer to immerse themselves in the national parks of both the moors and the dales, although there is plenty of scope, too, for those who prefer to drive, or take the North York Moors Railway. For those heading south, the Kent Downs are an equally appealing Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stretching from the London/ Surrey borders to the White Cliffs of Dover.

North Yorkshire Off Grid Glamping under Starry North Yorkshire Skies Hidden away in the heart of North Yorkshire, a stones throw away from the Moors, Freespirit Glamping is a family run site with just five beautiful bell tents, each with their own garden and facilities. Each of the thoughtfully decorated tents has a king sized bed, private bathroom with hot shower, washing up area, a washing line for those beach towels, a fire pit, cooking station, log store and BBQ. The tents contain everything you need, from toys and games, hot water bottles and blankets, cooking utensils and cool boxes, to vintage enamel cookware adding a quirky, nostalgic feel. The site is dog friendly and surrounded my miles of walking country. Freespirit Glamping is ideally situated only 10 minutes away from the market town of Helmsley, with many quirky cafes, pubs and gift shops. York is a 30 minute drive away, and 50 minutes in the opposite direction finds you with your pick of Whitby, Scarborough or Robin Hood’s Bay.

The stove has a hot plate for preparing small dishes. The beds are hand made. Equipped with cups, plates, bowls and cutlery you have all you need for a relaxing, comfortable and peaceful break away from it all. Set in a rural area north of Perth is a secluded wildlife haven where you are likely to see roe deer, buzzards, red squirrels, foxes, owls, woodpeckers and a lot of small birds. A romantic burn flows through the grounds.

IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF YOUR DOG WITH

Canine Massage Therapy

Dogs are fantastic at hiding their pain. Having your dog assessed and treated by a member of the Canine Massage Guild can help give you answers to your questions such as why they are slowing down, having difficulty getting up and down stairs, not performing as well at agility or other sports that you used to enjoy together. Canine massage is a unique holistic approach that helps to rehabilitate soft tissue and muscular injuries, such as trigger points and strains. It also helps with pain management in situations where orthopaedic issues such as arthritis or hip dysplasia have been diagnosed. Improvements in a dog’s mobility, pain management and activity levels can be achieved when a dog has just 1-3 sessions of this results driven physical therapy. Get in touch with Edwina

Hidden Gem

Luxuriate in Hencote Vineyard’s short break experience Shropshire’s Hencote Estate is an award-winning vineyard which invites guests to immerse themselves in a unique experience of viticulture within a superb setting. It not only grows the grapes and makes them into a superlative range of wines, but also offers luxurious holiday and glamping accommodation, even wedding packages, along with exquisite dining and the means to make memories. Just a few miles from Shrewsbury, the Hencote vineyard nurtures some 23,000 vines individually by hand, using traditional techniques. The grapes – ripened by a favourable microclimate - are then made into quality wines. These can be enjoyed in the estate’s beautiful restaurant, The View, and in its bar, The Balcony, both commanding fabulous views. The style is casual fine dining, emphasising quality local ingredients and heritage.

Staying guests have a choice of a beautifully renovated Georgian farmhouse, The Grange, or luxury glamping in The Village, amid 60 acres of lush private gardens. The Grange accommodates up to 14 people in lavish comfort. It has high end furnishings and appliances, open plan living, dining and kitchen areas and seven en-suite bedrooms, including a master with its own steam room. Users have exclusive use of three acres of grounds with a private hot tub.

General Manager Mark Stevens says: “This is not just a place to come and glamp but to have a vineyard experience. We offer all-inclusive packages which include a bottle of our wine on arrival, breakfast each morning, vineyard tours and wine tasting

one afternoon and an evening meal in our restaurant, all for a great price.” Hencote Estate, Hencote, Cross Hill, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY4 3AA T 01743 298444 E reception@hencote.com

The Village provides safari lodges each for two adults and either two or four children. These are also fitted out for indulgent comfort, with super-comfortable beds, roll-top baths and walk-in showers, a log burning stove and a veranda with woodfired hot tub. Guests are encouraged to enjoy learning about all that goes into making the wine.
