Message from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chris Nhlapo

All schools and universities of any substance understand the value of arts, culture and sport in developing holistic and well-rounded individuals. This is because Arts, Culture and Sport allow us to be inclusive and creative. You see sport fans don’t care what kind of background a player may come from as long as they produce on the field. Equally Arts and Culture are one of the most accessible ways of seeing worlds we may never be exposed to.

It is worth noting that through some of the most difficult periods in history artists have continued to produce work, because it is a primal need and human right.

One Smart CPUT is an ethos that encourages our staff and students to find unity in our diversity. Therefore, our various Arts, Culture and Sport codes are so important. We want our students to unite across racial, religious and economic lines to find commonality. By doing so we are doing our job in producing the type of socially conscious individuals that CPUT and South Africa needs.

Sport, Art and Culture are a universal language that we should all take in interest in learning. I hope you continue your passion for these long after you leave our care and become citizens of the world.

Meet our Boxing Conditioning Coach, Anele Mkondweni

My name is Anele Mkondweni, I am a Residence Coordinator responsible for Melade House and De Goede Hoop Residences

How have you gone about the strength and conditioning process for the CPUT boxers?

One of the basic things that are needed for boxing is power production. This needs to be achieved without necessarily

The boxers also had strength training at the campus gymnasium, to enhance cardio output, and assist with the balancing of muscle mass. Lastly, diet is very important in boxing and may vary from boxer to boxer depending on the weight target for each one.

What are the key elements of strength and conditioning for a boxer?

The key elements of strength and conditioning for a boxer is the physical condition of a boxer. When this is mastered, it would translate to his/her technical and tactical awareness and the specific skills that each boxer would possess. This can be associated with strength-power qualities which can be developed by going through the basics of jabs and crosses which improve the

History in the making for CPUT ATHLETICS

Tariq Klink, a full time Human Resource Management student has made history for Athletics and Cross Country this year by competing at 4 National Championships in one year.

Klink started the 2022 season on a great note when he represented Western Province Athletics in the 20 km Race Walking event and finished in the top 5 at the Athletics South Africa’s Road Race Walking Championship.

Two months later, Klink was selected to represent Western Province Athletics again, and this time, in his first Senior National Track Championship he finished in the top 10.

But it did not stop there; CPUT selected 2 athletes to participate at the USSA Track and Field Championships which was held at UJ in May. Klink’s event was on the final day and he made sure that CPUT walk away with a bronze medal for the team.

One month later Tariq Klink was selected to represent the University Sport South Africa’s team for the CUCSA games in Malawi. Unfortunately, the hosts withdrew Race Walking from the program, and Klink could not attend. Klink was then selected for the CPUT Cross Country team that participated at the NWU Mafikeng campus.

Klink is a very talented athlete and a great teammate. He is also a model, and winner of many modelling pageants. We wish Klink all the best for his training in

Tariq Klink competed at 4 National Championships in one year.

Here’s what we learnt about our E-Sports coordinator, Vuyokazi Tokwe, during a brief interview: How have you gone about facilitating E-Sport at CPUT?

It all starts with consulting the students, finding out what suits them best within what is available. I work closely with the sport development officer to facilitate training sessions and also get tournaments going. Tournaments are very crucial in the development of the students as it forces them to develop due to the competitive nature of the sport.

What in your opinion is the future for E-Sport in South Africa?

I think E-Sport South Africa needs to encourage more female participation. Local and national tournaments need to be made available so that people can become more familiar with this kind of competitive sport. An increase in tournament prizes will also encourage more players to participate.

“It felt so surreal. I was just trying to take it all in,” he said about the moment he was announced as the winner at the UCT Sports Centre.

“The CPUT players all came to support me. It felt like it wasn’t just an individual win for me but for all of CPUT.”

Zuhayr, who matriculated from Livingstone High School, said he initially played against his friends and about four years ago decided to start going to tournaments in Cape Town.

“I tried it out and it took me about a year to become really competitive in the scene.”

He eventually signed with Orlando Pirates and his highlights include qualifying for the eLaLiga FanCup in Turkey.

He has since signed with professional E-sports organisation ATK.

Zuhayr, who hails from Crawford, said making time for classes, studying for tests and gaming is a balancing act. To ensure that he stays on top of his game he tries to dedicate at least two hours a day to gaming.

He thanked his CPUT teammates and his family for their support.

Abrahams proved that he was ahead of the game during the recent University Sports South Africa E-sports finals where he was crowned FIFA champion.

What makes the day even more special for Bianchi is that he is also jetting off to London where he will compete in the FIFA Team Of The Season (TOTS) Cup. It was only through a visa delay that he was able to attend his graduation.

“I’m very honoured and grateful to be here. It’s a momentous occasion and I always wanted to celebrate it, especially after the difficult Covid period,” he said.

Bianchi said that as a teenager his entire focus was on football as he realised that the sport was an opportunity for him to grow outside of his surroundings. As he got older, he began to realise

that his football dreams might not materialise as he was starting to feel the strain of injuries and the impact on his education. While he had “had numerous club offers coming in” he was also starting to discover the world of competitive FIFA online.

He said his PlayStation allowed him to become immersed in the world of FIFA and he started to realise he was extremely good at the game.

Bianchi began to compete in regular competitions around the country and he was noticed by one of South Africa’s biggest gaming organisations, Goliath Gaming, He was soon signed to the professional team and went on to claim a multitude of firsts for a South African FIFA player. But he never neglected his studies dedicated Mondays to Thursdays to his studies and weekends to gaming.

Meet the CPUT NETBALL TECHNICAL TEAM who score goals, defend titles and continue to reach for greater heights

ANNELIE LUCAS Alumna 1992

My netball journey started as an obsessed supporter, keen player, and umpire, gradually leaning towards coaching as I stepped into the role of parent and now administration. A full circle serving the sport I so dearly love. Accountability, Integrity and inspiration. Values that I try to live by.

My coaching philosophy: I am a player-centred coach that facilitate and guide. I believe that players learn best when they have input into what they do in training and during competition, thereby, taking ownership and full responsibility. Quality, intensity, and uncompromising standards are non-negotiable. I’m firm in what I believe, have old school values with new school ideas. I coach because I have a passion for the game.

I believe in nurturing my players’ dreams to be the best on and off the court. I have and in-depth understanding of netball with excellent analytic skills and a natural feeling of planning the game. I pay attention to detail with the ability to motivate, challenge and inspire.”

My CPUT-netball family is very near and dear to my heart. Driving change in a very competitive netball arena is not always easy and blaming others for targets not reached can be easy, however, to reach our goals we must adjust as we go along. Our dream to become a team that will be able to compete in the Varsity Competition. We came very close 2017 however hit

a curveball and landed back in the second division 2018. With clear goals, new management in the Sports Office and unity as none we won the second division 2019 and the future looked bright. Then Covid-19 hit. As player were forced to study from home, our home-based training was on par however players got part time jobs and when competition started opted to not play anymore.

2022 was a year for change. I was elected as the new Director of Coaches for Netball South Africa during the 2021 elections and shortly thereafter named the Legacy Manager for the 2023 NWC. This is such an honour and I know the change that we started small at CPUT can now grow into something bigger. Exiting times for us as the CPUT netball fraternity. This creates more opportunities for our coaches to grow. I stepped into the mentorship roll and we welcomed coach Babes to our family.

To grow our footprint on various campuses is very important and we want to ensure more students have opportunities to play netball. Female as well as male students.

Mohamed Alley, thank you for giving us as a netball fraternity a voice, believing in our vision and program. The amazing players, the actual stars will rise as they grow, and I will push and support them to become the best they can be. As CPUT we will be able to reach much more players through our sport and we should use this opportunity to be able to change a player’s future through netball.

CPUT NETBALL TEAM MANAGER

AVIWE MAGUDU

I am Aviwe Magudu, completing my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at CPUT. I am currently serving as the Team Manager for CPUT Netball where I perform technical official duties and other assigned duties.

I am passionate about netball. My journey with netball started in the villages, in a small town called Matatiele in the Eastern Cape. Little did I know that playing the sport at age 7 in primary school was my gateway to a greater journey ahead of making the CPUT netball team and beyond. I joined CPUT netball as a player while staying at res and from sheer determination and dedication to the sport, I landed the role of CPUT Residence Netball Coordinator across all campuses. I really enjoyed this role for its positive impact on student life. I knew I was part of a team that was adding real value in helping students refrain from drug and alcohol abuse and promoting improved mental health where students could cope better with depression and other mental health issues as we engaged them in sports.

Similarly, to the students, we were helping, I used netball as an escape whenever I felt overwhelmed by my studies. Even as an undergrad Mechanical Engineering student at the time, I found my course quite challenging (well it still is at master’s level), and netball helped me maintain balance, find my sense of calm, and refocus. Fast forward to 2019, I was a volunteer Netball coach for CPUT Bellville campus, and I was selected as part of the Technical Officials for Provincials and Nationals. In 2020 I was selected to be the technical official for U21 Finals in the South African (S.A) Spar National Netball championships held in Cape Town where matches were televised live on SuperSport. I felt truly honoured.

Furthermore, this year I was again selected to be the technical official for Under 21A representing Western Province in the S.A

Spar National Netball Tournament held in Potchefstroom, North West. This was a milestone for me, and the event was even more special because it was held during woman’s month. On Women’s Day, Netball South Africa (NSA) did a South African flag reveal for the 2023 Netball World Cup. I felt emotional and excited all at once, to have witnessed and been part of such a historic moment in South African Netball. I look forward to South Africa hosting the World Cup next year with great anticipation, especially to the contribution I will be making as part of CPUT, Western Province, NSA, and the nation.

My journey in netball is a testament to the fact that indeed when preparation meets opportunity, resounding success can be achieved.

ANUSHKA ODENDAAL

My international netball journey began in October of 2019 when I was nominated by the USSA Federation to attend a technical course hosted by the International Federation Netball (INF). The African Netball Cup was my first international tournament as a technical official. I am so blessed for that opportunity as I was able to learn and grow as an official and I took full advantage of it. I learned many techniques and skills to capture a netball match on paper and that made me realise how amazing the game of netball can be and how constructive feedback is crucial.

I was called up to assist as a technical official at the South Africa vs England Test Series in December of 2019, which was hosted at the Bellville Velodrome. With the Covid-19 pandemic, netball came to a stand-still and we anxiously waited for the moment that we could resume events on the calendar.

The SPAR Challenge Tri-Nations Tournament was held in March of 2021 at the CTICC where I expanded my knowledge and skills as a technical official, learning from the absolute best in the field. As the regulations were relieved during the pandemic, my Varsity Cup Netball journey began in October of 2021 and I was privileged to be appointed as a technical official, ensuring that the high quality of work that was expected was maintained.

The Netball World Cup African Qualifiers was a big event on the netball calendar. I was selected as one of four officials from the Western Cape to be trained as a statistician and/or technical official for the Netball World Cup in 2023. The final appointed group of statisticians will be primarily selected from

I was also selected to act as table manager at the Varsity Cup semi-finals and finals of 2022 which were hosted by the University of Stellenbosch. I am always grateful for any opportunity that crosses my path, and I will always strive to become better by learning from the greatest. A philosophy of mine is: Today is my opportunity to build the tomorrow that is desired, and these opportunities will be found if I believe that they are there. Although I strive for perfection, I believe that there is always room for improvement. My attitude will always reflect gratitude, because the more grateful I am, the more beauty I see around me.

The Blue Wave continues to crash on the rugby shores

What a season it has been for CPUT Rugby. This year we participated in the Western Province Super League C which was a new venture for CPUT as it was the first season that we have participating in the Super Leagues. It was a great unknown to players as majority of our players has never played club rugby before, this is due to most of them joining CPUT straight of School at the end of 2019 and with Covid disrupting club rugby for the past two years.

Nevertheless, we looked at the season as an exciting challenge ahead and got stuck straight into it. We landed back in Cape Town the Friday after our Varsity Shield Final and the Saturday, we had to fall into our First league fixture which was tough for the players as there was no time to recover. The first fixture was a great surprise to the players as they were not use too playing in front of club spectators which could be challenging at times but one of our core values is ADAPTABILITY, and so we did. Winning our first game with a bonus point.

During the preparation and the course of the tournament we had be quite cognisance of how we managed players training loads in conjunction with their studies, as it was a long season to complete. In this sense our squad rotation played a big factor in managing players loads to keeping them competition balanced and not over trained or played, which also help when it came to players coping with their academics.

The season was a tough one even though we only lost two out of the 16 fixtures that we played. Being a university club, the oppositions always put huge targets on our backs but the players showered great maturity to always keep CPUT name flying high. At the beginning of the season, we commitment to playing a brand of rugby that we would enjoy and that would excite our supporters and anyone who watched us play, and we definitely done so by gaining huge support from CPUT community and the greater WP rugby community.

During the mid-season club break we headed off to USSA 15’s which we were able to give players from our extended squad opportunity to participate in the tournament (allowing some of the stalwarts to rest and recover), they done exceptionally well and just fell short in the final of our section to UCT.

We then started the second half of the season with a bang, playing the log leaders Strand RFC who were unbeaten at the time (our two losses came I the first half of the season) and were determined to keep it that way but in true CPUT fashion the BLUE

ALASTAIR THEYS

WAVE came out in full force and played some exceptional rugby to give the log leaders their first loss of the season. From this point CPUT went unbeaten for the rest of the season meeting Strand RFC once again in the finals. The finals were a challenge for us as half managed and half of our first team was at USSA 7s, never the less we went into the final with one thing on our minds and that was to lift the league trophy and that we DID.

Gaining promotion to the Super League B is huge for CPUT Rugby, as this will ensure that we play against stronger opposition week in and week out, by doing so this will help us improve not just on the field but off the field as well. The next step would be the building a platform to gain promotion to the top league which is Super League A but the first challenge would be, settling in Super League B and gaining the experience to take the step to the Super League A which is one of our mid-term goals.

The future of CPUT Rugby looks bright with a lot of young talent and old, being attracted to the club.

We as CPUT Rugby would just like to thank everyone who has helped us and backed us in this journey so far (CPUT University Senior Management, CPUT community, Supporters, Students, Families, Friends, Western Province Rugby).

As always, we will try our best to keep the BLUE WAVE flowing.

CPUT RUGBY PLAYER ACHIEVES “BIG”

JOSHUA PARIS

Joshua Paris hails from Cape Town, Mitchells Plain. He studied a Diploma in Public Administration, allowing him to work in various departments such as HR, Finance and Law.

Paris describes his story as “not the usual rugby players story”. He was always amongst the biggest of his friends and was really not interested in rugby. His rugby career only started when he was in Grade 11. He played for CPUT for the past 2 years, in his favourite position – lock. Playing in this position motivated him knowing that he played in the same position as world class players, Eben Etzebeth, Maro Itoje and Brodie Retallick and one day he could have the opportunity to go head to head with these players.

Paris says despite his size, he is known to have quite a large amount of pace and speed, and the fact that he’s never afraid to tackle gives him the physical edge when giving those big hits and runs.

His CPUT rugby coach, Coach Alistair Theys, always told him to trust the process. His mind-set is therefore not to think long term, but to focus on how to currently better himself as a rugby player, putting in 100% at every gym and training session, and if A successful rugby career comes from it, it will be the cherry on top.

Paris has decided to further his

education journey at the University of Free State and was fortunate to receive a bursary. Paris was happy to get the opportunity to further his education and get the opportunity to play rugby for Shimlas at the same time.

Paris says it’s a dream come true to be able to play in varsity cup as that’s where some Springboks have started their professional journeys. Paris highlights that Shimlas have shown that they are capable of winning the competition, therefore, being involved in this institution would help him as a rugby player to reach greater heights.

Paris says that he will always remember CPUT rugby. He will miss the brotherhood we between players, the ever supporting fans and his personal favourite, singing amagwijos with the team.

Paris ends off his interview by mentioning that he’s not sure what the future holds, but a dream of his would be to play professional rugby, specifically in South African or play overseas and experience the world.

CPUT wishes Joshua Paris all the best in his new journey ahead!

Following his invitation to join the Western Province U/21, Matthew says: “It’s an opportunity to take my rugby to the next level and learn and improve my skill set… I am quite proud of myself for this achievement, but I also know that it’s just a stepping stone to go to the next level of rugby.” He also concedes that his career journey has been “very up and down.”

“It’s tough because you always try to improve yourself and stay disciplined. I’d say what helped me a lot in my career so far is the support I’ve had from my father because he always pushes me and tells me that I can achieve whatever I put my mind to and also all the coaches who’ve I worked with throughout the year and have helped me improve.”

The Kuils River-born 21-year-old CPUT rugby player attended many different primary schools but he finished his primary school career in Pretoria at Laerskool Doringkloof. After finishing high school, Matthew went to the Western Province Rugby Academy in 2020 before joining CPUT in 2021.

“Well funnily enough, my mother didn’t want me to play rugby in the beginning and my family pretty much had to beg her to let me [play] and I started playing in Grade 4. I just wanted to play rugby because I remember sitting with my father watching the Springboks play and I just wanted to play,” Matthew continues. “Just sitting and watching rugby with [my] father made me love the game and the more I played the more my passion for the game grew.”

He is motivated to play rugby by the constant need to be better and to just play the game. “The motivation to better myself as a person as well as all the important people in my life.”

Winning the Varsity Shield as a first-year student for CPUT in 2021 is one of his best memories of his career. However, this didn’t come without any challenges. “I’ve faced many challenges from being told I’m too small to being told I’m overweight and this dips in confidence and during the outbreak of covid-19 I wanted to stop playing but I had people in my life that kept me going and pushing through.”

Matthew has many people who are mentor figures in his life. “To name a few, Alastair Theys, Head Coach: CPUT, Jason Hector, Coach: WP and Western Province Rugby Academy, Jerome Paarwater: Coach: WP, Paul Anthony: Director of rugby: Pretoria Boys’ High. All of these men have helped me grow as a player and pushed me to get be where I am now.”

CPUT Rugby player earns provincial colours

Matthew continues: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

He is also optimistic that CPUT can expect some good rugby and hopefully another Varsity Shield trophy in 2023 and promotion to the Varsity Cup.

Matthew Coenraad, who has been drafted into the Western Province (WP) U/21 team, has set his eyes on wearing the green and gold colours of the Springboks one day.

“My message to CPUT community is to never give up and always work towards your goals and dreams because if you don’t put in the work no one else will.”

SUPER LEAGUE C CROWN for CPUT Rugby

The CPUT Rugby Club

crowned Super League C 2022 champions.

The winning trophy was presented to the club during the recent Western Province Rugby Awards Dinner, held at Kelvin Grove.

“CPUT Rugby Club will be promoted to Super League B in the 2023 season, which is the second best League in Western Province Club Rugby,” said Bulelani Mlakalaka, Sport Development Officer: Rugby, Boxing and Tennis.

“It was a great honour to accept the award on behalf of the university. I must say the CPUT rugby club is very happy to be promoted to the second best club rugby in the Western Province Rugby Union Club Rugby,” he added.

He accepted the trophy at the event with club captain Siyasanga Ngubelanga. Mlakalaka said the Club was only four years old.

“For many years CPUT Rugby was in a merger with Gardens Rugby Club and the club was called CPUT Gardens. In 2018, Mr Siyabulela Mkwalo, who was a manager of Sport Arts and Culture, and myself wrote several proposals to the Western Province Rugby Union, seeking a breakaway from the merger and forming a University rugby team like other sister universities in the Western Cape.”

Once the proposal was approved Mlakalaka had to draw up a five-year plan in 2019 with the aim of taking CPUT rugby to the top club league in Western Province Club rugby, called Super League A.

“In 2019 we had to start from the lowest league, called City League, which is the fourth division. At the end of the season in 2019, we managed to get promotion to Super League C although we did not win the trophy.” When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the plans had to be delayed for two years.

“On our return to the Western Province Club Rugby League after two years we had to push with our five-year plan. The League started one day after we lost the Varsity Shield finals against Fort Hare in Alice, Eastern Cape but the CPUT Rugby Club did not sit down and lick their wounds.”

CPUT Rugby Club was placed second on the final log and according to the format of the league, the top four teams play against each other in what Western Province Club Rugby called promotion and relegation semi-finals.

On 17 September CPUT defeated Macassar Rugby Club in the semi-finals with a final score of 22-12. CPUT then club qualified for the finals.

On 24 September the club faced Strand Rugby Club and won the finals 26 -19.

“On behalf of CPUT, I would like to congratulate the student athletes (players) and coaches. They all put their body on the line to represent CPUT. It is my dream to put CPUT rugby on the map. I will always push my technical staff and players to work extra hard so that our team can be recognised all over South Africa,” said Mlakalaka

He thanked all CPUT supporters, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chris Nhlapo and the SRC for their support.

The team’s head coach is Alastair Theys, the assistant coaches are Jongi Nokwe and Sentle Lehoko, the strength and conditioning coach is Brandon Isaacs, the physiotherapist is Byron Isaacs, the team managers are Bongani Ntshobodwana and Theo Lwandile Ngqwala and the club captain is Siyasanga Ngubelanga.

has been

CPUT Coach elected as USSA Table Tennis chairperson

Marasi, who hails from Ezibeleni, Komani, in the Eastern Cape, said he felt humbled and honoured to be nominated for the position and to be representing CPUT at national level.

“I won my first gold medal in 1999 at the SASSU (SA Student Sports Union) Games and ever since then I’ve been a coach/manager/mentor for CPUT Table Tennis on a voluntary basis until I was formally appointed last year.”

His role as USSA table tennis chairperson will be to lead and manage all table tennis activities at university level.

Marasi said the role would also include ensuring that the status of table tennis is elevated from being a recreational sport to being a competitive sport that produces champions to represent the country at national, continental and international level.

Furthermore, his role would be to assemble, manage and prepare a team that will represent South Africa at the World Student Games in 2023. “Our role at university level is to nurture and develop table tennis to be a sport of choice and [for it to be] treated on the same level as popular sports like football, rugby, soccer and netball. My role is to develop a sport-orientated university community that shows interest in table tennis and balance their time wisely with their academic commitment. We encourage more women participation and involvement in the sport.”

He said strong bonds needed to be formed with local table tennis clubs and federations and good relationships had to be established with the South African Table Tennis Board (SATTB).

“Table Tennis is a great sport that helps and contributes to one’s health. It should be played at school, at work, in churches and at all recreational facilities. Creating a healthy sporting nation, will help decrease the level of crime, take kids out of drugs, decrease the high teenage pregnancy rate and also helps kids at school with a healthy body and mind. Only then, academic excellency will be guaranteed.”

Marasi is a father of two daughters, Kamo and Uzuko and describes himself as a change agent.

CPUT Table Tennis coach, Mfundo Marasi, was recently elected as the chairperson of University Sports South Africa (USSA) Table Tennis.

“I’m a mentor, leader, an optimist by birth, a traditional healer, who is proud of his Xhosa culture. I’m a multi-talented child of God who plays and manages the following sports: rugby, football, athletics, hiking, table tennis and karate. I’m an international volunteer who prides himself about encouraging and promoting the spirit of giving back to my community without expectations.”

He said he would give his all to his new role.

“Many thanks and appreciation to Mr Mohamed Ally for his support thus far and ensuring CPUT management endorsed and supported my nomination He said he would give his best to represent my CPUT and serve all institutions with humility, pride and distinction.

Our role at university level is to nurture and develop table tennis to be a sport of choice and [for it to be] treated on the same level as popular sports like football, rugby, soccer and netball.

We

My name is Mfundo Lee Marasi, mentor, manager, father of 2 girls: Uzuko & Kamogelo kafile and a CPUT Table Tennis coach. I was born & bred at Ezibeleni Komani and I’m currently residing in the Western Cape due to work commitment.

QWhat is your coaching philosophy/How do you go about coaching the CPUT Table Tennis?

• Firstly, we allow our players to be themselves & appreciate the talent they have on the sport. I create a safe & a supportive, yet challenging environment that allows them to thrive while enjoying their God given talent.

• We build trust between player & coach, as the programme we provide them ensure they believe & trust in themselves on the Table

Unlocking potential: through our programme, we help a player to understand the incredible potential they have on the sport & beyond Table Tennis. Developing & nurturing talent is our main objective through understanding their strength & challenges, and help them

• Creating commitment: allowing players to commit into a training programme, honouring matches & commit to representing the team with pride.

• Executing goals: allow players to develop and set achievable goals, both in the sport and in their academic life. Support my players in every way possible in order for them to achieve their goals

QWhat have been the highlights for 2022?

The year 2022 has been a challenging but yet, productive and successful year for the CPUT Table Tennis family. We started the year with a small group with only few female players and embarked on a recruitment drive where we managed to recruit about 5 female players. It wasn’t easy as 3 of the female players were doing their inservice training and that left us with only 2 committed female players while we had about 10 Male players. We ended up with 8 committed players that worked with the team.

The following were the little gains/wins for the CPUT Table Tennis family:

• I was reappointed as the CPUT Table Tennis coach and I am committed to serving CPUT and continue to develop champions for my University

• Ms Genevieve Lentz became the 1st African black female to be the Deputy Referee for the Tokyo Olympics 2021

• Ms Genevieve Lentz attended the World ITTF Youth Championships, Portugal as a Deputy Tournament Referee, 2021

• Ms Anande Kuse (1st year Film production student) made it to the Provincial Cape Town Table Tennis Team to represent the province at the National Games in October 2022

Table Tennis coach…

• I, Mfundo Lee Marasi was elected as the USSA Table Tennis National Chairperson, at an USSA Table Tennis AGM, July 2022

• CPUT scoops Gold at the WC Inter-Tertiary League 2022. A pilot programme where 4 Western Cape Tertiary institutions competed on a 1-leg league championship, Aug – Oct 2022

• Ms Genevieve Lentz & Ms Anande Kuse represented Cape Town Table Tennis at the SATTB National Championships, 02nd – 08th Oct 2022, Durban, South Africa.

• Ms Anande Kuse wins Silver Medal, u/19 Team events category at the SATTB Championships, Durban 2022.

• Ms Genevieve Lentz flew the CPUT & South African flag sky high at the ITTF Valuejet Lagos Para Open, 2022 in Nigeria as a Deputy ITTF Referee.

We’re so super proud of CPUT Table Tennis family that continues to fly the Institutions flag sky high and being proud CPUT Ambassadors in the Table Tennis International community.

QWhere do you see CPUT Table Tennis in the future?

The future for CPUT Table Tennis looks bright & we hope to produce more champions, have strong representation in the Provincial team as well as having more CPUT players having national colours. In 2023, we’ve got about 7 Gr12 learners with provincial & National colours coming to study at CPUT. They all want to be part of the winning CPUT Table Tennis team while they pursue their academic goals through CPUT. We’re so proud to be recognised by learners as early as Gr10, who see themselves being part of CPUT and also further their Table Tennis career through CPUT Table Tennis.

QAny additional comments

I want to thank my players for believing in the vision and ensuring we achieve it as a Team. Your commitment and service to CPUT Table Tennis is commendable and thank you for representing CPUT with pride and excellence. I also want to thank CPUT Sport Management, Mr. Ally & Ms Mangiagalli for their support, we wouldn’t achieve so much if it wasn’t for their support & belief to the vision that I have for CPUT Table Tennis. I also want to thank Mr. Maseko from the Advancement department through the Alumni office, your support and always willing to help Alumni is highly appreciated. We’re #CPUT ambassadors and we’ll continue to bring medals and represent our University with pride and excellence.

First-year selected for SA TABLE TENNIS TEAM

Anande Kuse fell in love with the sport of table tennis while attending an after-school programme in primary school.

She has been included in the SA Table Tennis Board u/19 girls’ team.

“What I enjoy the most about table tennis is that it’s a sport where respect is taught from the beginning. It’s really complex, but also really interesting, with lots of technique and thinking involved.”

Anande grew up in Nyanga and attended Walter Teka Primary and Sithembele Matiso High School.

She follows a strict training routine, while also ensuring that she keeps up to date with her studies.

Anande said she was very happy to be included in the national team.

“At first I had so little confidence in myself. When I was still going for trials, I felt like I didn’t do enough training. But now, since I’m on the national team, I feel very happy

and proud of myself, said the member of the Top Table Tennis club and also the CPUT Table Tennis Club.

Volleyball - males

Supa-pool - males

UCT25-29 JulyAfter several years of dormancy, volleyball has been given a new beginning at CPUT. One of our successes is that we were able to participate in the USSA for the first time since 2015. Won their first game at USSA for 5 years as well.

TUT05-09 August

In 2019 we had a successful CPUT Supa-pool tournament which was meant to kick-start the sport after many years of its non-existence. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted our progress and we had to wait until this year to get things going again. It can be considered a success that we were able to participate in a USSA tournament for the first time in over 10 years.

RESULTS

CPUT finished in position 15 out of 19 teams

2nd place - silver medals. There were 10 teams in the competition. One of our players, Simakele Kutase, came 5th overall and made the national USSA team. Team captain, Lukholo Bhalela came 6th and is therefore the reserve for the national USSA team should they participate in any international events which does not seem likely at this stage.

COACH’S

GADIJA JAPIE CPUT Ladies Volleyball Coach

I’ve been involved in volleyball for 30 years, played in the national team for 16 years and I’ve been coaching for 13 years. I am qualified as an FIVB International Volleyball coach and I’ve been coaching Varsity teams, Club teams, Provincial teams and SA Teams over the past few years. I have a love for the game, and my passion is developing players, coaching and motivating them to achieve their full potential as an athlete and volleyball player.

Gadija gave us a bit of insight into her role as Volleyball Coach at CPUT…

What is your coaching philosophy/How do you go about coaching the CPUT women’s volleyball team?

I coach because I have a love and passion for volleyball and I want to see the sport grow. My philosophy is creating a fun and positive experience when playing volleyball and at the same time creating a competitive team environment where we strive to develop and perfect the technical skills as well as implement the character building aspects that comes with playing a team sport. I coach the CPUT team with those same expectations – we show up, we respect each other, we learn and discover, we work hard, we have fun and at the same time, when we play matches, we aim to compete, not just participate.

What have been the highlights for 2022?

Participating in the Cape Town Volleyball league and winning most of our matches was very exciting. Ending 2nd in the UCT open tournament was certainly a highlight for us.

Where do you see CPUT volleyball in the future?

I see CPUT volleyball growing and being amongst the top Varsity teams. We are also looking to secure a top 4 position in the Western Cape; we are already well on our way.

KYLE FERNANDEZ CPUT Men’s Volleyball Coach

I have my coaching qualifications in Volleyball which is the VSA level 1 course and I have experience working with elite and professional coaches around the world. I have my Bachelor of Education degree from CPUT, completed my Honours Degree at UCT and currently doing my Master in Education at Stellenbosch University.

This is what Kyle had to say…

What is your coaching philosophy/ How do you go about coaching the CPUT men’s volleyball team?

My philosophy towards coaching is to be disciplined and to be a student athlete. To focus on not only sport but academics as well. To excel at all aspects in life.

What have been the highlights for 2022?

1. The team won their first game at USSA in more than 5 years.

2. The males team reached the top 4 in the Cape Town Volleyball Federation League.

3. Reaching a Squad size of 15 players

4. Represented CPUT at the USSA Beach Volleyball for the first time in history.

Where do you see CPUT volleyball in the future?

1. Doing well at USSA

2. Players being able to represent CPUT at the world student games

3. Being called up for the national team

CPUT CHOIR is surrounded by the sound of music, led by choir conductor, Vusumzi Tsham

Singing in harmony is not the only aim of our CPUT Choir conductor. Let’s see what he has in mind…

I am Vusumzi Douglas Tsham. Born in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

I was born into a musical family, not only my parents but a generation of musicians. My paternal grandfather was a choir conductor and arranger, and my maternal grandfather was a pianist. I was surrounded by music all my life. Due to the fact that my father was a Pastor, I was introduced to choral music through the Old Apostolic Church where my father was a Pastor.

I do not have a specific favourite genre because I love music and to me genres are colours us “Artists” use to paint pictures.

The diverse ethnic groups and diverse cultures within the choir. The fact that the choir is a University choir it is not easy to have steady progress because students come and go. You can have a good choir this year and start afresh the following year, in terms of teaching technical knowledge.

I would incorporate other art forms such as drama, poetry and dance. Collaborations with other choirs and programs such as cultural exchange programs and work towards creating a choir that would be locally relevant and internationally respected.

At the age of 15 I received a certificate of recognition from the Old Mutual National Choir Festival for performing in the regional choir eliminations competition. That was an affirmation for me to decide to choose music as a career. I have a theory of music certificate from UNISA, an Advanced Certificate in music literacy from Stellenbosch University, and a National Diploma in Music from Stellenbosch University. One of my achievements was when I was appointed by CPUT in 2017 to be the university’s choir conductor. I regard this as an achievement because I was still an undergraduate student when I got appointed. In 2013 I attended and passed a song writing course at the Cape Town school of song writing, I got an opportunity to work with EMI record producer, Clive Ridgway, during the recording of Selim Kagee’s debut album.

Vusi Tsham, CPUT Choir Conductor

I have been invited to Maputo, Mozambique to teach music at the Xiquitsi cultural project.

I have been commissioned to compose music for Gauteng Choral Music Association (GACMA), Laerskool Eikestad and Stellenbosch Libertas Koor to name a few.

I am a member of the jury for the ABC Motsepe South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) and facilitated school choir conductors workshop. In 2021 I attended introduction courses to drama and poetry at the Nelson Mandela University for 6 months and worked with the Nelson Mandela University choir which subsequently performed one of my choral compositions “Siyabonga Mandela” during the graduation ceremonies. I have also worked with an American music director Kathy Smith during the “I will rejoice” concert in 2019. I had an opportunity to perform locally and abroad as a soloist and chorus member with the Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir (SUCC) during my undergraduate studies.

We welcome Vusumzi to CPUT and we look forward to hearing our choristers sing like angels.

NT Jikwa embraces the drama and leads the CPUT Drama Society to national stages

The CPUT Performing Arts Society is an extramural activity that was formed in 2012 by CPUT artistic students that produced trained and disciplined performers within the music, drama, poetry and dance industry. Some of these students not only performed at the National Arts Festival but have also worked in pre-production at the festival and some in the biggest stages like the SAFTAs.

In 2022 we were invited to a festival called Suidoosterfess at the Artscape Theatre for a theatre production called My Society that has been running since October 2021. The show went on to record visuals for The National Arts Festival and the recording has been posted on YouTube under the CPUT Performing Arts Society page for everyone to stream. Independently, I referred a few society members who succeeded in the audition process for a short film by Cumi Media and that is my biggest highlight among many.

It was an honour and great experience for my show to be performed at one of the most epic festivals Cape Town has to offer, Suidoosterfees. My Society has been receiving good comments from the public as some would say “It is very relatable” and the video is aesthetically pleasing to the viewers.

5,6,7,8… Meet our inspiring new Dance Facilitator, Carla Scholtz

My skill training and development as a dancer began as a young girl, at the age of six years old, at the Eoan Group School of Performing Arts- this is excluding my dance performances during my pre-school years.

I started with Modern Jazz and Hip-Hop dance first and then at the age of eleven years old, I decided to give Classical Ballet a try (and to my surprise, I actually enjoyed it!). I participated in two annual productions at the Eoan Group (one mid-year and one at the end of the year) for a period of eleven years. During this time, I performed at numerous Cape Town Carnivals, Baxter Dance Festivals, Artscape Productions, birthday parties and commercial events. The highlight of my dance career at the Eoan Group was travelling to the Philippines for two weeks, to participate in a cultural dance exchange programme.

Once my journey had come to an end at the Eoan Group, I took the decision to complete a four-year degree in Dance Pedagogy at the University of Cape Town (UCT), majoring in Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance. My time as a dance student consisted of numerous performances at UCT, the Baxter, the Artscape and even George, where we offered Contemporary and Hip-Hop Dance classes at George High School. The highlight of my dance student career, however, was being awarded the opportunity to travel to Australia with my former lecturer and dance mate in 2018. I had performed at the Panpapanpalya International Dance Conference, which was a platform established for dancers across the world to showcase their talent for a shared, political objective.

In addition to my travels, the other most unforgettable experience in my dance career was being a lead dancer in the Bring It On 6 Cheerleading film in 2016 (at the end of my first year at varsity). For three months I had the opportunity to work with and alongside professional, international dancers, directors and producerswhere so much knowledge and understanding about the film industry was accumulated. I knew right there and then that this is what I wanted for my life as a professional dancer. All I wish to do is dance and perform!

Unfortunately, when the Covid-19 Pandemic struck, everything came to a halt. There were minimal to zero dance opportunities in the theatre, film and commercial industry, and as a result, my dreams came to a stand-still. However, despite this gap in time, it has not changed the fact that it is still my dream, as a professional dancer and dance teacher, to perform. My aim is to travel with dance and to be a part of a Hip-Hop Dance Company abroad.

Right now, I am extremely grateful to be teaching my love for dance and the arts to young individuals, who share the same passion, at the Cape Town University of Technology (CPUT). My goal is to holistically educate and develop my students through Dance and dance teaching methods, and with that said, I only envision greatness!

Simangaliso Ntoni, inspiring men from a young age

I am Simangaliso Ntoni, and I am 19 years of age. I was born in Cape Town and I moved to the Eastern Cape to live with my grandmother in a township called Mdantsane. Both my sister and I were raised by this God-fearing woman. At a young age, I was taught and trained to honor and fear God; she instilled norms and values. She taught me to man up and live a principled life as the head of the house. That taught me and prepared me for my future standards in life.

I started schooling at Thembeka Day Care Centre and then proceeded to Phumelelani High School. I then later went to Philemon Ngcelwane High School where I passed Grade 12. I entered science project competitions achieving district medals and I would be selected to attend National science competitions.

I was also involved in children’s ministry in my local church. I initiated my own organization in 2013 called Positive Force for The Future. The main goal was to help vulnerable and underprivileged children in my community. Along the way, I met a woman who changed my whole life, Miss Vuyisa Mfaka. She helped me on every event that I did and, in the process, she played a mother role in my life.

All this time I had entertained my feelings by harboring resentment and anger towards my parents. That damaged my personality but God restored my soul. Struggling with forgiveness I managed to forgive myself and everyone out there in order to pursue my dreams and become a real man. If God has given you a dream of doing something you must pursue it.

My reason for writing this book is to make a plea and encourage people to hang onto their dreams, to remind them that no matter how small they might be feeling due to their current situations and no matter how big their dreams may seem, they should hold on to their dreams and keep the faith. God is powerful and faithful enough to bring every storm to pass.

Just man up and believe in yourself, do not lose your identity. Take charge as the young generation. Be informed, confident and be focused. You should always live and life of purpose and be responsible. The world needs men’s wisdom and energy and not energy to destroy it but energy to build it. It needs men who are going to take authority so that they can fulfil God’s original purpose for creating a man.

Our nation is in a crisis of Gender Based Violence. Men should take secure measures and protect women and children. Men should reposition themselves and liberate our society from all these challenges that the society is currently facing.

Future goals and what I am currently doing.

I see myself owning my own film studio and also doing music. I’m currently doing my first year in film production.

What inspired me to write the book.

My background and recent experience as a young man inspired me to write this book titled “What it means to be a man.” Also, the lessons that I got from my grandmother growing up helped me to write this book.

Every young boy needs a father figure in his life. Every child needs a mentor who will be able to guide them and show them the way to live life. This book holds wisdom. It will bring healing emotionally, mentally and spiritually for those who need it. There is no excuse in men who kill and abuse women. We need strong, emotionally balanced men who can lead this world and develop innovative solutions to improve its current problems. Men who will protect their families and refrain from abuse.

Uyanda Kiva, THE POET

My name is Uyanda Kiva, born and raised in the Eastern Cape, Middledrift (eXesi).

I am the 5th child of 6 kids. I am currently in my 3rd year of study in Film And Video Production at the Cape Peninsula University Of Technology and this was a choice made out of passion for telling stories and narrating reality of many.

I was 13 when I was told that the way I write describes poetry by my Art and culture teacher in grade 9 at the Ben Cox English Medium School, in Dimbaza 2013.

From there I was motivated even more by my English teacher in Grade 10, Mrs Gabisile Mncono, as she would teach and explain poetry that made me interested in the world of poetry. When I wrote, I remembered her lessons and that’s a guide to how I structure my work.

My favorite genre of poetry is Narrative Poetry and praise poetry. This comes from my love of telling stories. I believe myself to be the Voice of many without courage to speak out.

What makes me different is that I own up to my work, I don’t follow the rules of the poetry world which include fancy metaphors and grammar, I tell stories exactly how they are and I call a spade a spade. Most of my written work I have never performed, because my performances are always motivated by energy from the crowd. I also feature art work matching the theme of the event.

What I have obtained through my poetry journey recently has been an Interview and Performance with Cape Town TV EKSE TV show, a prize of 2nd place in a Poetry and Spoken Competition hosted by the City of Cape Town back in June 2022 and What I hope to be a Life Time partnership with CPUT as their head Poet.

After completing my Diploma, I hope to work fully in the Film industry and grow my hair business @ HAIR_NATIVE into a bigger platform. I also hope for a signed partnership with CPUT as their Poet and the rest lies in the hands of the universe but this won’t be the end of me.

Those who wish to Book me can contact me on Instagram @Mbomby_k or Facebook @Uyanda Kiva also via email UYANDAKIVA45@GMAIL.COM.

CPUT Poetry

16 seconds from space

You can feel my heart racing from across the room If I could just reach for you.., What I feel and what I say is almost contradictable

I’m contemplating who I should tell it to and who’s really worth telling the truth

I’m in zero gravity

When I look into your eyes I see more than what meets the eye I see a piece of you, That’s holding back the truth

You’re sociably doing all the things that make me comfortable just so you can get through

I’m in zero gravity

Is this the perfect time to tell you that I might be falling for you.

Maybe not, this might not be the best time

But it feels right

It feels like

I’m at the right place to be at this point in time

I mean that

If you feel like

There’s something you need to think about

Don’t rush

Take your time

I’ll be right here with open arms, and you can run back to love But for now

Come closer

Grab my hand and let our energies align,

Pretty little hands

Pretty little eyes

Pretty little nose

Pretty little lips

….can I get a kiss

I’m in zero gravity …

Year 1

I dedicate this to my mother

To only you, and always do To do all the things you did Without complaint but with pain

Before I go out, it becomes a debate I remember a day, you the teacher, doctor, and counsellor But only to see it was love Tey you loved me like no other How I wish I had seen it sooner

If I could have chosen, I would pick no other One day I would want to be like no other, But only like you mother

Hartklop

Saggies kom vul jou liefde my wonde Dit blis die bloei van die donder Die krake wat my hartklop laat stop... Krake wat skree, skaamte en sonde;

Year of study (2022): Second year

Ek gee al my krake en dele aan Jou Jy maak jouself dié Sondebok vir ons onkunde.

Broos blink ek, in sak en as en rou Gewoont aan die krake, maar verby is die ou. Hoop, die profeet roep altyd vir beter. Tog rou ek steeds die donder hier en nou;

The day I lost you forever

A heart shaped pillow says I love you along with the teddy bear you sent on our one year anniversary

They don’t bother me But oh, the memories now that haunts me I hope you remember

3

You woke me up that morning with breakfast in bed but that kiss that came with it said it all Those unspoken words silence spoke it’s loudest then

At least I knew what that silence meant Now your silence is deadly

A atmosphere I can no longer obtain feelings I should’ve been used to by now

Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse

A terrific result appeared

A surprise no one was expecting The day that totally ruined everything

A deadly disease overcame you Left everyone crushed A month

That’s all you have left they said

‘The art of being you’

Faith, trust, and belief. These are the most important things you Should have as you grow older. They are like bricks; a house won’t Have strong walls if there are no bricks. But like bricks you won’t Have a wall without cement to hold the bricks together to form That strong wall. Like a builder you should choose quality cement not just any cement, as there are many types of cement not all of them can serve a good purpose.

Faith is more like something you hold on to when you feel like You’re losing balance, trust is choosing to feel safe on whatever You are holding on to, and belief is knowing that whatever you are Holding on to will give you positive and most wanted results like not falling. But remember in exercising all these things you are making an effort (holding on to something). That is how it is in life.

Whatever your belief is, you have to have not only trust and faith In your belief but also put on some work. Take this as a relationship, For a relationship to work you have to trust the other person and Have faith that this will work out, and you should show that person love in different ways, like picnic dates, vacations, etc., that is how the relationship will grow stronger and happiness grows.

What i am saying is even when you feel like nothing is happening or There are no changes ask yourself if you are putting in enough Effort. Let’s say you are writing an exam and you believe in god, you Can’t possibly expect to pass the test without thoroughly Preparing for it because you ‘trust in god, you have to study and then believe that you will pass the test because god is with you.

Maybe most of the things did not work out because you did not put In enough effort and you did not trust yourself enough to believe You are capable of making the impossible possible. This means you had the bricks but no cement. Or you had the cement but not the bricks. Try using them all and note down the changes you got. At the end of the day it is about you. It is still you being you. You overcome the challenges of the world. It is the art of being you.

WHISKEY TO MY SOUL

proverbial hells attached to the memory like scars on the skin exonerating the agony you put me through is out of question. you yanked my emotions into a bottomless abyss and all I can resort to for comfort is the mature whiskey you left by the bedside.

I relish the coziness each sip softly showers all over my skeletal frame, diffusing itself into every particle of my withered derm and at once, a profusion of memories agilely inhabit my conscious mind, and with every sip, something akin to healing cuffs my soul, rubs itself into my wounded heart and every memory of you in my head fades out slowly and slowly

1st

as I pleasantly fall drowsy and hold on to hopes that a golden day will rise with the sun tomorrow for my light-headed self to no longer reminisce your destructive touch, for my soul to be boxed not in sombre for my anxiety to not shoot up at the mention of your name for you to come back to me.

Student attending launch event, hosted by the Centre for Diversity, Inclusivity and Social Change and the Division of Student Affairs, were invited to join the programme as mentors or mentees with the aim of empowering undergraduate students to reach their full potential.

Prof Driekie Hay-Swemmer the guest speaker for the event, from the Executive Director in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, shared a part of her personal journey within Higher Education often being the only female in the Executive space and how it is opportunities like this where young women can be inspired and supported is needed. She said it was sad that the playing fields were still not equal and added: “We will get there”. “What I see across the country and at CPUT is that women are taking up their legitimate space in various platforms.”

The Faculty of Applied Sciences’ Prof Beatrice Opeolu said the EmpowHer idea was conceptualised last year during her sabbatical at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Nigeria. She said women globally have limitations to their career progression for many reasons, including the roles that traditions and cultures have placed on them, and this impacts on their productivity. “We

know there are opportunities mostly for postgraduate students but not for undergraduate students and that is the gap. I thought if I had opportunities as an undergraduate student that I had much later, maybe my career trajectory may be different from what it is and maybe it would be more productive.”

Nonkosi Tyolwana, the Acting Dean of Students encouraged attendees to be part of the first cohort of EmpowHerSACPUT and said there would be an induction of the mentees and mentors.

The CSRC secretary-general, Nonele

Ganyile and Wendy Kondlo, chairperson of the District Six Local SRC while attendees were awarded the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences. We had a total of 27 Inspiring Young Women Awards, which celebrated the amazing achievements of CPUT female students in several areas, including sport and academics were recognised during the event.

We look forward to the induction which will take place late November and rolling out the mentorship and holistic career development support for young women at CPUT.

The day was filled with performances and showcasing of cultural dances, a food tasting and best dressed competitions. Food tasting samples from the South African cultures included Xhosa, Zulu and Cape Malay cuisines as well as food from other African countries from the Congo and Nigeria were sampled by those attending. The event highlighted the importance of providing more platforms for students to showcase their culture, traditions as well as an opportunity to learn from others.
