Foz|Saneatins is responsible for the water and sewage service in Tocantins State, serving 80% of the population and investing in 47 municipalities

n June 5 – World Environment Day – in partnership with the Tocantins State Government and Palmas City Government, Foz|Saneatins inaugurated ETE Norte, the largest sewage treatment plant in Brazil’s Northeastern region. The event was held with the presence of approximately 400 guests, including political and religious authorities, community leaders, the press and students.

The new equipment has state-ofthe-art technology and the capacity to serve up to 215,000 inhabitants, treating 770,000 liters of sewage per second. “This is an important step for guaranteeing that the majority of the Palmas population is assisted over the next four years, improving quality of life, health and respect for the environment in the capital,” explained Mário Amaro, President and CEO of Foz|Saneatins. For Mayor Carlos Amastha, ETE Norte

stands out for its treatment efficiency. “With these new technologies, we produced an extremely high quality effluent that does not impact the water quality of Palmas Lake,” explained Amastha. Also present at the inauguration ceremony was the Secretary of Institutional Relations, Eduardo Siqueira, who reinforced the importance of the company’s actions and the partnership model between the government and private initiative.

With an investment of R$ 25 million, ETE Norte was built two and a half years ago and is equipped with the latest treatment technologies: all of its operation is automated and controlled in remote rooms. This improves Members’ safety, together with the process quality through real time monitoring. Special World Environment Day

he Stockholm Conference, held in 1972, marked the first discussion about the relationship between Man and the Environment. Promoted by the United Nations Organization (UNO), the debate gave origin to World Environment Day. The date is celebrated all over the world, and this year, the United Nations has alerted about the risk of global food waste. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, pointed out through a message the importance of seeking out solutions for the enormous loss of food. For him, the waste is “an offense for those who are hungry and represents an enormous cost for the environment in terms of energy, land and water.”

‘WATER PLANET’ The United Nations elected 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation, as a way of allowing for reflection on the importance of this natural resource. In the Bahia Southern Lowlands, farmer Valdete

do Nascimento also shares this concern. “I began reforestation on my property, primarily around two water sources I have here,” said Nascimento, a resident of the Mata do Sossego Settlement, located in the municipality of Igrapiúna. “The sources may dry up, and in order to prevent this from happening, I decided to help them.” “Dona Dete,” as she is known, is one of the participants of the Payment for Environmental Services Program (PSA). PSA is coordinated by the Land Conservation Organization (OCT), an institution that is part of the Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental Protection Area Mosaic Program for Development and Growth Integrated with Sustainability (PDCIS), supported by the Odebrecht Foundation and public and private partners. The initiative makes it possible to plant native Atlantic Forest species in the Permanent Preservation Areas and maintain these for the 24-month period, without any cost for the landowners. (also known as “Neto”), resident of the community of Fartura, located in the municipality of Piraí do Norte, the attention paid to natural resources is no different. When he noticed the low level of the river, he sought out the support of OCT. “I always wanted to reforest, but I didn’t have the knowledge or financial resources,” said Brito. “There were many obstacles, since people said that I was crazy to get an area filled with nicelooking grass and reforest it.” “Neto” is considered a model farmer in the region for generating the demand for forest recovery on his property. At age 36, “Neto” is participating in the project “SAF: An AgroConservation Strategy in the Juliana River Basin - Pratigi Environmental Protection Area (EPA),” led by OCT. Financed by the Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity (FUNBIO), the initiative seeks to reestablish the environmental services of an area considered to have high

environmental productivity, but which had been degraded due to local economic needs. The project includes the installation of demonstrative Agroforest Systems (SAF) – a cultivation method that gathers different crops, such as cacao, rubber and fruit bearing trees. “The SAF is inserted without cost, allowing for a way to guarantee the income of the family unit,” explained Volney Fernandes, Leader of the Strategic Environmental Services Cooperative at OCT. “It serves as a counterpart for the rural producer who directs part of his or her land toward conserving the native forest,” he said. For Dona Dete, who also joined the project, this is yet another opportunity to collaborate toward the environment. “We receive orientation on how to develop the crops while protecting the soil,” she said.

WANT TO PARTICIPATE? Calculating how much carbon gas is released into the atmosphere and reducing this emission through compensations are the proposals of the Pratigi Neutral Carbon Program. Coordinated by OCT, the initiative allows any person or company to measure how their actions impact the environment and seek to compensate such impacts.

Simply access the OCT website – www.oct.org.br – and enter the number of airline trips you take per year, the type of fuel you use in your vehicle and whether or not you separate recyclable waste, among other information. The result is displayed in numbers of trees and the values in reais of how much it would cost to plant these. This is how it is possible to finance the service so that OCT can offer it. The funds are directed at reforesting the water sources located in the Pratigi Environmental Protection Area (EPA), located in the Bahia Southern Lowlands. The seedlings are planted on the properties of the family farmers from the region, where each producer earns R$ 1 per unit. In this way, the worker can earn more than R$ 1,500 per year as payment for the environmental service provided, since it is possible to grow up to 1,666 trees per hectare. One of these water sources is located on the property of farmer Jeovan Nascimento, resident of the community of Juliana in Piraí do Norte. He is being compensated for allowing for the generation of an environmental service, such as the planting of native species

near the source. “My children and grandchildren need to know what a forest is,” he said. “My father found the region devastated and opened up a pasture, but cattle doesn’t bring a profit here because it rains so much. When the OCT opportunity emerged, he freed up areas for us to work. In all, 155 hectares were restored with native species of Atlantic Forest and SAFs and 97 water sources in the project areas were conserved and recovered.

PAC IMBOAÇU At the young age of 7, Marlon Roberto de Araújo, a student at Castelo Branco Municipal School, located in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, knows what needs to be done to help reduce environmental degradation: “You cannot throw trash in

the river or cut down trees,” he said. He was one of the 110 students, ages 5 to 12, who attended the lecture about World Environment Day, promoted by the PAC Imboaçu team. There was the presentation of educational videos showing actions considered harmful to the environment, such as the indiscriminate cutting of trees, greenhouse gas emissions, the disposal of untreated sewage and garbage into the bed of rivers and the poor use of natural resources. “Raising the environmental awareness of the surrounding community is crucial for preserving the construction project investments,” emphasized Marcos Saliveros, Contract Director.

BARRA DO FURADO At the Terra e Mar Consortium – responsible for the construction of the Farol/Barra do Furado Logistics and Industrial Complex in Rio de Janeiro –, the date was marked by a cycle of lectures with Members, including videos about environmental impacts and initiatives to minimize them. There was also a presentation of the UN topic of this year, with a focus on food waste, and

a campaign about reducing such waste. After the start of the action, there was an 80% reduction in the amount of food wasted at the construction site. “Our work is to raise each Member’s awareness to respect nature and encourage them to take this knowledge to their families,” said Lucia Helena Barreto. “We were able to raise each sector’s concern with the impact caused,” she said.

The children toured the construction work and listened to a lecture by the Occupational Medicine team about Health and Hygiene and the correct disposal of waste. The group also planted seedlings of native Atlantic Forest species and learned more about the importance of trees for the environment.

TRANSOLÍMPICA On four different service fronts, the Construtor Transrio Consortium – which is completing part of the Transolímpica construction work – addressed the practice of the actions covered in the project’s Environmental Management Plan, focused on environmental preservation, involving Members from the Production, Administration and Management areas. The plan was implemented together with the fauna and flora study and monitoring phases, disposal of solid

waste, noise control and survey of liabilities, performed since the first days of the construction work. For Cláudio Borges, Contract Manager, in order to reach the level of sustainable development, the responsibility for environmental balance must be well understood and practiced by everyone: “Companies have sought to increasingly gather practices focused on environmental preservation and social responsibility, forming partner Members through daily communication processes.”

INFRASTRUCTURE - LATIN AMERICA RUTA DEL SOL – SECTOR 2

The Ruta del Sol - Sector 2 contract promotes actions for training and environmental education for the community along the 528 kilometers of construction work for the road that connects rural Colombia to the Caribbean Coast, currently being completed by Odebrecht Infrastructure. The initiative is part of the Social-Environmental, Sustainable Development and Environmental Education Program, designed to awaken an ecological

consciousness, primarily among the new generations. Since January of this year, 213 activities were promoted at different schools and sites for more than 800,000 children and youth. Through campaigns such as the 3Rs (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse), with lectures, videos, songs, dances and painting, the groups were called Generación ECO (“Generation ECO”), responsible for multiplying the ecological messages for those with whom they relate.

CHAGLLA HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT Members from the Chaglla Hydroelectric Power Plant in Peru had the opportunity to learn more about and disseminate the Odebrecht Organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sustainability Policy through different activities. Together with the Environmental Affairs team, the workers had access to the main environmental actions at the project, such as the Waste Management Center, Orchid Greenhouse, Native Plant Nursery, water treatment plants and Interpretation Center. LIMA SUBWAY The Environmental area of the Lima Subway projects, in Peru, elaborated and implemented a pilot project that allows for the reuse of organic waste discarded at the construction project refectory. The Composting Project recycles the organic material in two specific sites. The preparation of the compost favors of the biological activity of the soil because simulates the transformation of organic waste in an accelerated fashion. Once it is ready, the material serves as an organic fertilizer.

Members attended special Daily Working Trainings, viewed debate videos about the global conferences ECO92 and Rio+20 and also watched a theater performance that addressed the importance of spaces filled with trees, primarily in urban settings. Furthermore, there was the installation of the first recycled garbage cans, made from recycled project equipment air filters. The local community also took part in the celebration through meetings with the leaders and students that addressed Garbage Management.

REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENTS PARQUE DA CIDADE The neighbors from Parque da Cidade have some major incentive to contribute toward the recycling process: the development teams installed a curbside garbage collection station that serves the region located near the project. The station has specific collectors for each type of recyclable material (paper, plastic, metal, glass and used

cooking oil), as well as a “Solidary Point,” in which clothing, toys and books can be donated to the São Paulo State Social Solidarity Fund. Until now, 804 donations have been received. Operating for six months, the station has already received over two tons of material. Everything that is collected goes to the recycling cooperative COOPERCAPS, benefitting 63 cooperative members.

ENVIRONMENTAL FOZ During the International Year for Water Cooperation, Foz prepared an Environment Week featuring actions. The campaign addressed topics such as Water Pollution, Water and Sewage, Waste, Riparian Forests and Preservation at the company’s operations. According to Mônica Queiroz, responsible for Sustainability, the intention was to promote increased integration between the professionals and the Organization. “We treat water as a central theme and show that its preservation and the reduction of water pollution are possible through the cooperation and involvement of society,” said Queiroz. “During the year, the topic will continue to be addressed in our environment,” she explained.

The schools and teaching districts from the cities in which Foz operates also participated in the actions. In Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, students planted native Atlantic Forest seedlings near the unit’s new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). At Foz | Saneatins, there was the Run for the Environment in Palmas for approximately 200 people, together with environmental actions in other cities. In the rural São Paulo city of Rio Claro, there was the presentation of the exhibit Clean River-Clear River as part of the city’s Ecological Circuit, designed to present the sanitary sewage system and collection, removal and treatment services. The Rota das Bandeiras Concessionaire, located in rural São Paulo, innovated in its activities to mark World Environment Day. Because caring for nature is directly associated with forming more conscious citizens, there was the distribution of 10,000 board games that transmit information related to the topic in a playful way for children. “The idea behind the game is to promote education in a pleasurable way for children, maximizing the potential learning,” emphasized Environmental Manager, Mauro Pereira Filho. In Itatiba, Rota das Bandeiras planted 500 native tree seedlings with the participation of 40 students from the Sebastião de Camargo Pires Municipal Elementary School (EMEB). The concessionaire also distributed 100,000 pamphlets about the Jaguars’ Corridor project in partnership with the Chico Mendes Biodiversity Conservation Institute for the preservation of the fauna that exist in the region of Campinas.

ROTA DO ATLÂNTICO Throwing garbage onto the streets pollutes, attracts animals to the road and may cause accidents, in addition to constituting a violation of the Brazilian Traffic Code. In order to inhibit this illegal and dangerous practice, the Rota do Atlântico Concessionaire performed a surprise inspection in its concession area, located in Suape, Pernambuco. The action is part of the Citizenship on the Road Program. Approximately 1,000 drivers received orientations and trash bags for their vehicles. There was also the distribution of ecological post cards with seeds of Ipê, a native

species of the Atlantic Forest. “Our action reflects the concessionaire’s continuous environmental education work, which extends beyond the legal requirements for operating a highway, further contributing toward raising the awareness of conscious citizens when it comes to environmental issues,” said the Social-Environmental Advisor, Joyce Melo. Members also received special attention. The toll collector and controller teams, both recently contracted, participated in group dynamics on environmental issues, such as the importance of recycling.

CHEMICALS AND PETROCHEMICALS BRASKEM At the Braskem ABC, Cubatão e Paulínia units in São Paulo, the date was celebrated with a week of activities designed to raise people’s awareness about the different alternatives for disposing of the

waste produced daily. Members received brochures about urban waste and recycling, participated in thematic games and listened to a lecture about how plastic contributes to a sustainable economy. The activities also involved children, either sons and daughters or relatives of Members and partners,

with a cultural contest featuring sculptures made from recyclable materials. At UNIB 3, in Mauá, blitz took place to check for the proper disposal and processing of waste and Members attended a lecture about the coprocessing of this material. The professionals also participated in a contest to find the best phrase and competed for prizes. In Alagoas, Members took part in the Integrated Environment Seminar and learned more about everything from the opportunities and challenges for plastic to a reallife case related to Waste Management. The initiative extended to the students from the community during the visit to the Green Belt Environmental Station. The occasion also marked the launch of the photo contest A Vision of the Environment, which already includes 25 different works. To end the week, there was the presentation of the Braskem Environmental Cinema Week at Praia de Pajuçara.

AGROINDUSTRIAL

To attract attention and promote actions focused on meeting the challenges related to the access and management of water, Odebrecht Agroindustrial used the topic to hold its Environment Week. Different actions were elaborated to promote the integration and raise the awareness of the Members. The centers organized visits to the water collection sites, water sources in sugarcane planting areas and to the agricultural fronts, seedling planting sites at the units, communities and farms located nearby, and there were lectures on the Forest Code, environmental preservation and waste. All activities developed the importance of water and reinforced protection and good practices, such as the reduction in consumption. In the communities located near the centers, the Social Energy for Local Sustainability Program promoted theater plays, the launch of projects about waste and gardens, the planting of seedlings and presentations of films.

Members of the São Paulo office watched the documentary film Sobre Rios e Córregos (“About Rivers and Streams”) and were able to reflect on the relationship between the city and its waters. Corinthians Arena: Two Years of Construction Work On May 30, the date of the second year of construction work for the Corinthians Arena, the 1,400 Odebrecht Infrastructure Members who work on the project were honored with a party held at the stadium’s South grandstand. The event included speeches by leaders, a commemorative banner, cake and the traditional commemorative song. The construction of the new stadium for the soccer club Sport Clube Corinthians Paulista – as well as the stage for the 2014 World Cup opening ceremony – began in May 2011. The project is currently 79% complete and the planting of the grass field will begin this month. One of the current highlights is the installation of the metal roof tiles on the East building. In the game field area, the gravel and sand placement work in the grass drainage and cooling systems is moving forward quickly. The services are being completed in a range of different indoor and outdoor areas at the arena, including the bathrooms, spaces for stores, snack bars and restaurants, floors, walls and Skyboxes. Workers are also focusing on assembling the metal structures of the large glass walls for the West and East facades – the last will have a large LED screen – and also assembling the air conditioning, electrical, electronic, water and sewage system installations.

The Museum of Tomorrow Roof Takes Shapes A “jigsaw puzzle” with at least 5,300 pieces has begun to take shape during the month of June at the Museum of Tomorrow, part of the Maravilha Port construction work in Rio de Janeiro. Heading the construction work is the Porto Novo Concessionaire, which has Odebrecht Infrastructure as one of the participating companies. The pieces that will form the museum roof are already being unloaded at the construction site at Mauá Pier. The 13 tons of material used to build the main gantry and the pieces for the factory structure came from Portugal, transported in nine trailers. The gantry, which is 50 meters wide and 31 meters high, will circulate throughout the entire museum

Bypassing the Teles Pires River

Santo Antônio HPP: Yet Another Unit in Operation In June, the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant – being built by a construction consortium headed by Odebrecht Infrastructure and with investments in the concession with participation by Odebrecht Energia – received authorization from Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) to start the operations of its 13 th turbine. The authorization was published in Brazil’s Official Federal Gazette on June 5. During the same period, ANEEL

authorized the start of test operation for the 15 th unit, with the capacity to generate 73.29 MW. It is estimated that in December, the plant will have 24 turbines operating. The Santo Antônio HPP began operating in March 2012, nine months ahead of schedule. At the end of 2015, when it is operating fully, the plant will have the capacity to generate 3,150 MW, equivalent to the consumption of more than 40 million people.

Presenting the IT “Super Store” In May of this year, Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial launched the “IT Super Store” – the tool for selling Information Technology (IT) assets that allows users to offer and acquire equipment. The portal is designed for the projects and offices in the mobilization and demobilization phase and the IT areas of all the Organization’s Businesses. It is also possible to register products for purchase and sale.

The tool aims to offer visibility for the assets available in the contracts, which are sold or transformed into technological scrap in order to be reused within the Organization, reducing the costs related to acquiring IT items. Route toward Development

The President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, visited the Odebrecht Infrastructure project Ruta del Sol - Sector 2 on two different opportunities to follow the progress of the work. The first visit was in January at La Lizama (District of Santander), with a flight over Sector 2 of the highway. The president talked about the importance of the project for the country’s development and thanked Members: “Thank you for the quality and intensity of all of your work,” he said. “Stretch 2 of Ruta del Sol is the most extensive with its 528 kilometers of the highway’s total 1,071. The quality with which the work is being completed makes it even more emblematic.” The construction work generates approximately 1,000 job opportunities and promotes the Members’ training. “People

who have technical knowledge have their space guaranteed in future projects,” said Juan Manuel Santos. “We know that trained people constitute a permanent need,” he said. In February, the President of Colombia returned to the construction project with the country’s Minister of Transport, Cecilia Álvarez. Along the stretch of Aguachica (Cesar), the visit was part of the government’s initiative La Ruta de la Ejecución (“The Route to Accomplishment”) in order to announce, inspect or inaugurate the construction projects in the country. “Ruta del Sol - Sector 2 is the most advanced stretch of the three concessions that form the highway, and that is why it’s important that the work not stop,” said Álvarez. “With it, we will offer development for the region,” she said.

Raul Ribeiro, a Civil Engineer who has dedicated 37 years to the Organization, revealed important information about the availability of the resource worldwide, with an emphasis on national supply. Brazil is currently home to 12% of all the fresh water available on the planet – most of which is located in the North region due to the Amazon Basin, and the Northeast region is more lacking in this area. According to UN data, by 2025, 66% of the global population will experience water supply problems, with the resource consumed primarily by agriculture (70%) and by industry (18%). The 12% remaining, designed for domestic use, suffers a loss of approximately 60% along its course to the homes. “With the growth of the population and natural increase in consumption, it becomes even more pressing to rethink the use of water and for new technologies to be developed to allow for the rationing and optimization of the resource so that the different social demands continue to be met,” said Ribeiro. One example of an initiative that promotes this kind of savings is Aquapolo Ambiental, the largest water reuse project in Latin America, developed by Foz and SABESP in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo to serve the Braskem ABC Petrochemical Center.

Visit to the Metropolitan Arch On June 3, the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral, and Vice Governor, Luiz Fernando Pezão, visited the construction work for the Metropolitan Arch together with Benedicto Júnior, Entrepreneurial Leader at Odebrecht Infrastructure, Leandro Azevedo, Managing director of the company in Rio de Janeiro, and Cassiano Politi, Contract director. The visit marked the start of activities in the Situation Room, a space for the four construction consortiums and the State Government to gather together their technical, supervision and inspection teams to facilitate decision making and solutions. “It is a project that will drive business in the state even further by connecting the strategic regions of development,” said Leandro Azevedo. “We expect that it will be finalized by the end of this year,” he said. Communication is the Theme of the Meeting in Salvador Presenting the work of the Odebrecht S.A. and Odebrecht Foundation Communication areas was the idea behind one more cycle of lectures directed at the students of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), the Organization’s partner for the Journalist Training Program. During the opening portion, Benedicto Júnior, Entrepreneurial Leader at Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil, reinforced the importance of training and updating those who work with equipment and highlighted the continuous improvement of Workplace Safety as the biggest challenge. He congratulated the group for the meeting: “This initiative is important so that you can seek out new ways of supporting our teams to deliver a better result,” he said. “Production does not exist and the delivery will not be made if you do not help us to constantly seek out better efficiencies for our technologies.” Afonso Mamede, leader of the Functional Equipment Support Area (AFEq), also spoke about Safety, the Member and the partner, urging participants to

Mario Joel indicated the importance of Members’ participation in one or more Communities based on their professional activity. “At the Organization for five years, I have seen the development of this network and how it helps us,” said Joel. “They participate and interact increasingly more, and the result is very positive.”

CHALLENGE Before the event, the Equipment Community launched a challenge for its members, based on a real case from 2007: to design the installation of a 140-ton walkway extending 60 meters over Via Anhanguera – an important highway in São Paulo. The four winners were awarded during the meeting. First place went to Albis González, from the Madden Colón Concessionaire in Panama. In second, Donato Sampaio Silva, from the Pernambuco Arena; followed by Percy Victor Fiesta, from the Muelle de Minerales project in Peru; and in fourth place, Luiz Ramirez, from the Chaglla Hydroelectric Power Plant in Peru. Safety and project cost were the evaluated items.

Communicators Meet in Rio de Janeiro On May 27, Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil promoted its first Communication Meeting, which gathered approximately 30 professionals who work in the Communication area in the company’s different contracts in the country. The event was held at SuperVia, the Odebrecht TransPort asset in Rio de Janeiro. Antonio Carlos de Faria, Communication Director at Odebrecht Infrastructure, opened the meeting and spoke about the importance of Corporate Communication, primarily with relation to the company’s Reputation and Image. “All companies aim to have a good Image,” said Faria. “Some want to also have a positive Reputation. The Image is the sum of the perceptions of different groups, and if it lasts over time, it may build a Reputation”. The presentations demonstrated that, to earn the positive perception of the groups, it is necessary to build long term relationships: “In order to establish a good relationship, it is necessary to understand the public and ourselves,” explained Antonio Carlos. One of the methods for promoting self-awareness is the application of the Image Risk Matrix, an instrument developed by the Odebrecht Organization with the support of the company CDN Comunicação Corporativa, which allows those responsible to evaluate the level of risk to the Image for each contract. Milton Abrúcio, Director of CDN, presented the Media Exposure Quality Index (IQEM) and spoke about the stages for elaborating Communication Plans. IRRIGATION TO TRANSFORM PERU’S DESERT REGION By Jenny Jones A river is being bypassed through the Andes with hopes of transforming arid fields in Western Peru into productive lands. May 21, 2013 – The arid valley of Western Peru, which includes the city of Olmos, is not a site frequently associated with agriculture. The area receives only enough rain per year to sustain

the sparse vegetation made up of the trees and shrubs that dot the landscape. However, a revolutionary irrigation project is currently underway. Many hope that this project will transform the desert terrain into prosperous lands that will help drive the region’s economy. Under development for a century, the Olmos Irrigation project will bypass the Huancabamba River from the Eastern side of the Andes, where it flows out into the Amazon, to the Western portion, from which point it will flow to the Olmos plains in the region of Lambayeque in Northwestern Peru. In 1902, an explorer named Manuel Mesones Muro thought up the idea of redirecting the river to irrigate Olmos and in 1924, Charles Sutton, a North American engineer, proposed the construction of a 20-kilometer tunnel through the Andes Mountains to change the course of the river. Without sufficient funds, the project moved forward slowly over the following decades. In 1985, only six kilometers of tunnel had been excavated. However, in 2004, the Peruvian government established a public-private partnership with Odebrecht, an international engineering and construction company with head office in Brazil, and the final stage of construction has finally begun. Odebrecht and its subsidiaries received concessions to build the Limón Dam in the district of San Felipe, located in the Province of Jaén, one of the 13 provinces of the region of Cajamarca, as well as the rest of the Andean Tunnel and subsequent irrigation infrastructure. The dam built with rocks marks the start of the project. It will be used to bypass the water from the Atlantic Basin of the Huancabamba River through the tunnel to Pacific Basin. The tunnel entrance is nearly 14 meters higher than the exit. Accordingly, the water will be supplied by force of gravity. H2Olmos, an Odebrecht subsidiary, will be the owner and will operate and maintain the irrigation system, supplying water to 43,500 hectares (ha) of lands that have the potential to

be highly profitable. This includes 38,000 that were divided into 50 lots and sold to private investors, many of which will operate industrial farms, and 5,500 ha of property belonging to local farmers who operate smaller farms. “The area has a dry tropical climate and is considered a natural greenhouse,” said Alfonso Pinillos, Director of H2Olmos, in a written response to Civil Engineering Online. “With moderate temperatures, a minimum amount of rain and no freezes, the region is perfect for growing different products, including cotton, sugarcane,

grapes, avocado, mango, citric fruits, asparagus, hot pepper and other vegetables produced on a large scale.” According to Giovanni Palacios, Engineer and Director of the Odebrecht project, the tunnel has a diameter of 4.8 meters and is 1,828.8 meters deep, making it the second deepest in the entire world. The irregular terrains and complex geology – including quartz porphyry, andesite and tufa stone – made the excavation a challenge. A tunnel drilling machine made by the Robbins Company – a company with head office in Solon, Ohio, specialized in advanced underground construction machinery – was used to excavate the tunnel on the West side. On the Eastern side, traditional drilling and detonation methods were used. According to a case study published by the Robbins Company, the temperature inside the tunnel exceeded 54°C (129°F). Therefore, a special ventilation and cooling system was attached to the tunnel drilling machine to cool the tunnel to 32°C (90°F). The work was also complicated because the excavation crossed more than 400 geological faults. Besides this, more than 16,000 rock breakages were recorded during the work. In order to contain these breakages, the Robbins Company and Odebrecht installed a support system on land for the tunnel drilling machine and replaced the protective ducts on the machine roof for the McNally support system, supplied by the Toronto company C&M McNally Engineering, which

consists of steel ducts anchored to the roof of the tunnel through strips of steel and screws for the rocks, as described in the case study. “The construction of the Transandino Tunnel faced many difficulties and it was probably the world’s most difficult,” said Palacios. Ollanta Humala, President of Peru, and Humberto Acuña, President of the region of Lambayeque, were both present when the drilling machine operators finished excavating the tunnel in December 2011. Now, the project irrigation work is currently underway, including the construction of a second two-kilometer tunnel along the coastal area near the Olmos plains. The drilling and detonation will be used for this tunnel, which will channel the water to the Palo Verde Reservoir. From there, the pressurized piping will supply water to each one of the cultivated terrains. The construction of the second tunnel and the work related to irrigation should be completed by November 2014. The tunnel was financed through a public-private partnership with a total investment of US$ 247 million, and the irrigation work is being financed exclusively through private investments of US$ 280 million. In addition to the investments by agribusiness companies and Odebrecht, securities were also issued on the Lima stock exchange. It is hoped that the system will transform the arid lands of the region into productive agricultural resources with ample export operations. According to Palacios, if it is successful, the project will be able to generate more than 40,000 direct jobs and more than 100,000 indirect jobs. The Olmos irrigation project is one of many planned for Peru’s West coast, but it is the only one that will be concluded soon. “The importance of its contribution for the agribusiness sector is essential for consolidating the non-traditional exports, increasing the population’s quality [of life] and continuing to generate jobs for qualified and non-qualified labor,” said Palacios.

All 170 OEP Members were engaged with the preparatory actions for the Certification Audit, which took place from May 27-29 in São Paulo. The process was conducted by the Quality team, which received the dedication of the leaders, especially José Gilberto Mariano Costa, Engineering Director. During the audit, there were no “NonConformities” identified in the Quality Management System. Earning the certificates demonstrates to the market that OEP operates based on international standards and that it is prepared for new challenges. OEP was founded at the start of 2012 to offer project engineering services to

the Organization’s companies. Its mission is to seek its Clients’ satisfaction through intelligent and innovative solutions, contributing toward the development’s overall result. Accordingly, the Management System was established, which includes the requirements of the Standards ISO 9.001 and TS 29.001 associated with the management concepts of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and Criteria for Excellence established by Brazil’s National Quality Foundation. The actions elaborated include: more than 130 work procedures and instructions; approximately 9,000 hours of training and a high rate of awareness among Members as to the importance of their activities. Development Awarded, Winning Company Odebrecht Realizações Imobiliárias was the winner in the category Development of the Year Larger than 15,000 m² during the 19th edition of the ADEMI-BA Award, announced on May 16 by the Bahia Real Estate Market Company Directors’ Association. Partnerships for Education On June 10, the Enseada do Paraguaçu Shipyard (EEP), in partnership with the Libra Terminais Group and the company Multiterminais, signed an agreement with the Rio de Janeiro City Government for the new phase of the Double School Program, which aligns basic education with professional training. The initiative, which is coordinated by the Institutional and Sustainability Relations area at EEP, will be implemented in the neighborhood of Caju, where the Inhaúma Shipyard is located, leased by Petrobras and operated by EEP. Participating in the event was Governor Sérgio Cabral, Secretary of Education, Wilson Risolia, and the Executive Director of EEP, Fernando Barbosa, in addition to executives and representatives from countries such as

Revealing New Talents The results of the cultural project Revealing Mirante, promoted by the Odebrecht Agroindustrial Social Energy for Local Sustainability Program, were presented to a public of 300 people at the end of April at Mirante do Paranapanema, São Paulo. Created in partnership with the Municipal City Government and Clube do Meio Artístico (Arts Scene Club), the initiative trained some 80 people in dance, theater, literature and handicrafts. The event included the presence of Mayor Carlos Alberto Vieira, City Council Members Hernando Henrique da Silva and Rubiner Celso dos Santos, Secretary of Education and Secretary of Health, Edith Caivano Joppert Figueiredo and Fernanda Bernardes Fernandes Santos, Presidente Prudente Secretary of Culture, Fábio Nogueira, and the Odebrecht Agroindustrial team.

According to the Instructor of the Children’s Reading Incentive Workshop, Vinícius Jardim, after the experience with Revealing Mirante, it will be mandatory to meet the city’s new cultural desires. Local artists were trained between the months of June 2012 and March of this year and the qualification generated income. Students from the Mixed Performance Theater, for example, formed the cultural group Kukunká and were selected by the State Department of Culture’s Cultural Action Program (Pro-AC). Working with the texts of local authors, artists created the play “The Hillbillies are a Serious Cause,” and had their debut performance in Revealing Mirante. The presentations received the support of the state government in partnership with the city government and will be taken to the districts of Costa Machado and Cuiabá Paulista.

In order to improve the quality of life of at-risk children and adolescents in Mexico, the wives of expatriate Members of the Odebrecht Organization in the country developed a full-time project for Casa Hogar â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which offers social, psychological and educational assistance with the support of volunteers and professionals from the community. The Nuestro Hogar ANAR Mexico Association is a private assistance institution that helps victims of abuse, abandonment and drugs, rescued by the government. With aims of encouraging daily actions focused on reintegration and academic tutoring, English and computer skills classes, the group of wives created the Give Me Your Hand project with weekly

and monthly activities designed to improve the youthsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; self-esteem and motivation. The program is divided into three fields: educational, recreational and training and learning. The responsibilities include school monitoring, hygiene and health care and environmental education. The volunteers also offer art and manual skills, cooking, music and gardening workshops. In the recreational field, they promote related activities such as theater, cinema and reading, in addition to sports practices. In order to raise funds and meet the basic needs of the Casa Hogar, the volunteers organize events and make monthly donations.

On June 1, Children’s Day in Mozambique was celebrated by the Moatize Expansion Project – a Vale project being completed by Odebrecht Infrastructure – in a unique way. The Social Responsibility team and volunteer Members gathered for a day at the Casa Mundo dos Pequenos (Vó Teresa Orphanage), home to approximately 90 children. Songs, games, cultural presentations and snacks were offered to the children at the orphanage. The sweets, soft drinks and other items for the party were collected by the project Members and by professionals from partner companies such as Multiflora, Servco and Prosport.

In Party Mode In Angola, Children’s International Day was widely celebrated at the Odebrecht Infrastructure office and contracts. During the month of May, through the Happy Child Program - “The future starts now”, activities were organized at the office for the children of Members. Since 2007, the initiative has as public Odebrecht workers. Approximately 50 participants received orientations on Manners and Dental Hygiene, as well as tips by a physical therapist about correct posture and the ideal weight of school supplies. On the official date, 350 children of Members from the Corporate area and projects Luanda Highway System and Monte Belo had access to the same content and received gifts. At the Colui-Jamba Road project, the date was celebrated with traditional children’s

games and songs. The 62 children also watched movies in a reserved space at the construction site. The party at the Zango project involved the participation of some 100 children, and included a healthy lunch, gifts and lots of fun. The high point was the recreational game featuring a sack race and dance and cultural contests. In Catata-Lóvua, the celebration was twofold. The project celebrated Children’s Day and Environment Day with the campaign “Environment, My Home,” directed at children from the community to address topics related to the Environment. At the Luanda Expressways contract, the children of the Members were received with a lunch and games.
