Sharing to Multiply Our Knowledge

G

ood ideas and solutions for daily situations arise all the time at the Organization. In order to guarantee that the knowledge of the Members throughout 25 countries is properly disseminated, Odebrecht developed the Knowledgeable Network, which has a program called the Communities

The first Community of Knowledge was the Dams and Plant Community in 2001. At the time, Odebrecht was simultaneously building 22 hydroelectric plants in Brazil and abroad

4

of Knowledge:groups of people with common interests, willing to share learning and innovations. Implemented at the Organization in 2001, the activity includes two types of Communities:vertical, formed by the people of a specific segment, and horizontal, which consists of topics that permeate a range of different Businesses. The

program is structured into on-site meetings – mediated by a leader and disseminated by the multipliers elected–, and the exchange of experiences continues on the network through a portal where the information is shared on forums and spaces designed for disseminating good practices, documents or articles.“When a Member publishes a question on the forum, all members of the Community are alerted by e-mail and contributions from different environments begin to appear,” said Fernanda Camera, responsible for the Knowledgeable Network program at the Knowledge and Information to Support Business Development (CIADEN). The interactivity proposed also promotes integration and knowledge between the people of the different Businesses, thereby strengthening synergy and transversal operations.Olindina Dominguez, leader of CIADEN, reinforces that the result extends beyond expectations:“The Communities do not just share success. To the contrary, we find

being exposed, and to exercise internal consulting.”

that the most learning comes from those unsuccessful cases,” said Dominguez.“There is a favorable climate for people to collaborate, without any fear of

Odebrecht.“We have the instrument right there, and we need to use it to the extreme so that the knowledge flows and our results are increasingly better,” he said.

RESULTS The Organization has 5,486 Members in 13 Communities of Knowledge. Only in 2013, there is a gain of 1,522 people. During the course of the program, the recording of the cases presented during the meetings – in Education Through Work – were used in the initiatives of Education For Work, such as the Entrepreneur Development Program (PDE).The initiative also increasingly assumed its role as a qualifying force by offering technical training to Members. For example, there was the launch of the Tunnel Construction Professional Training Program under the Rail Transport Community; the Paving Program under the Highway Community; and the Contractual Administration Program under the Contract Administration Community. “The community is one of the strongest vehicles for preparing Members for their growth at the Organization,” said Sérgio Leão, responsible for Sustainability at

KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE IN PRACTICE Find out what the meetings of the Supply and Logistics Communities of Knowledgewere like, as well as the Social-Environmental Thematic Group of the SustainabilityCommunities of Knowledge, held in June.

SUSTAINABILITY: ATTENTIVE TO PEOPLE On June 17 and 18, Members of the different Businesses, most of whom were from the Social Responsibility area and the environmental programs in place at the developments, gathered in São Paulo for the third meeting of the SocialEnvironmental theme group of the Sustainability Community of Knowledge. The Community was created in 2009 and in order to boost the productivity of the discussions, three different

6

work groups were created:SocialEnvironmental, Workplace Safety and Occupational Health. For Sérgio Leão, leader of the Community, ever since then, the initiative has become a tool that acculturates and brings people together, primarily in the geographic and diversified environment in which the Organization operates.“The more active the communication between the Members in this space, the faster they will contribute toward their Businesses,” emphasized Sérgio Leão.

With an agenda structured to identify synergies, the event began with a lecture by Paulo Lacerda, responsible for Support for Entrepreneurship (RAE) - Operations and People & Organization. He presented the Organization and also addressed growth that is visualized by looking forward.Within this context, Lacerda indicated Sustainability as a growing topic and used as an example the number of members in the Community – some 1,200 Members.Marcio Polidoro, responsible for Communication at Odebrecht, talked about the new Odebrecht Brand architecture and explained about the unity that this change seeks to achieve. He also pointed out the existing exchange and support

between the social responsibility and communication areas for achieving their results. In addition to the cases presented by Odebrecht Infrastructure, Odebrecht Agroindustrial, Braskem, the Enseada do Paraguaçu Shipyard, Odebrecht Oil & Gas and Odebrecht TransPort, the event also included the participation of two outside lecturers:André Guimarães, from International Conservation, who gave a presentation about the roles of companies and the NonGovernmental Organizations (NGOs) when it comes to sustainability; and Luiz Carlos Ros, from the InterAmerican Development Bank (BID), who addressed the business opportunities for organizations in

“Knowledge is to be shared.I will look toward the program more to find support for my challenges. Our difficulties and objectives are very similar. the segments called the “Base of the Pyramid,” highlighting their innovation and potential as influencers. João Paulo Altenfelder, from the consulting firm SEI (Sustentabilidade, Estratégia e Inovação), offered support during the meeting as mediator.“It was an enormous surprise. There are few companies that have consistent work in the area of sustainability inserted into the business model, and not just as an official position,” said Altenfelder.“Odebrecht is showing how to develop the topic:investing in people and knowledge,” he said. Caroline Todt de Azevedo, responsible for Sustainability at EEP and leader of the social-environmental group, emphasized the quality of the content at the meeting

8 8

and the evolution of the Members’ participation.“During the first event, it was clear that people were eager to learn more about what ‘the other’ did at his or her Business and to exchange experiences,” said Azevedo.“Since then, we have seen people getting to know each other and exchanging content, in such a way that we have noticed several different types of learning being applied,” she said. For her, these bonds have increased and the Members already feel comfortable exposing their questions.“There was major progress in the sense of a feeling of belonging to the group, the speed of the responses within the virtual environment and the concern with the content brought to the meetings.”

SUPPLY AND LOGISTICS: REFLECTIONS ON SUPPORT During the week following, in June 24 and 25, some 80 Members gathered in São Paulo for the third meeting of the Supply and Logistics Communityof Knowledge. The participants were able to exchange information and experiences about topics that are common to the companies, and in order to start the sharing process, Luiz Mameri, Entrepreneurial Leader of Odebrecht Infrastructure - Latin America, talked about the people who hold this knowledge.“Without this highly important ‘piece’, people do not do anything at our Businesses,” he said.“So, how to motivate or identify them for our Organization?”Mameriencouraged them to search for this solution by relating the quantity with the quality of the professionals that Odebrecht integrates.Through this reflection, he indicated what is expected of the Communities:productivity over the short term, and development of people over the long term.“We are living in a new scenario, one with new demands from society as well as the competencies to serve it,” said Mameri.“Within this context, problems become opportunities,” he said. On the first day, the programming

10

was dedicated to Supply, and on June 25, Members listened to presentations on Logistics.“We created a programming that I compare to a samba school theme, explained Community leader, Mauro Rehm, responsible for OLEX – support unit for exporting and importing goods and services, and for the expatriation and repatriation of Brazilians. This year, the theme was about people’s qualification and attitude, which are reflected in new

Action Programs (APs).“We brought in speakers who had the posture to transform their areas,” said Rehm.“The presentations were the ‘themed floats,’ which were related to one another and told a single story, although in different activities,” he said.As a result, the meeting offered learning that can be used by all participants.

agenda.Monica Evangelista, responsible for Market Development at Braskem, is an example of how the Communities can promote this synergy.“For the 2012 meeting, we were invited to talk about our portfolio and the result was impressive,” said Evangelista. “Braskem discovered many opportunities in the Construction segment,” she said.Mônica

GROUP BUYING ON THE NETWORK Because it deals with topics common to companies – Supply and Logistics –, OLEX has the possibility of offering best practices and the best prices to the Businesses.Attentive to the latest trends in the consumer market, the area is about to bring the concept of group buying to the Organization.Accordingly, it is developing the supplier market to offer the lowest costs, and it will use the Community to systematize the negotiation and buying process with Members. “It will work as follows:we are negotiating construction worker helmets and I am able to get a discount for a volume of up to 5,000 units, for example. I disseminate this price through the network and we are able to purchase more for less,” explained Mauro Rehm.He reinforced that is possible to bring the concept of membership as opposed to something that pressures Members, and generate gains at the developments. With this project in mind, during the event participants listed the top demands that would apply for the group buying.

Peruvian Challenges The construction work for Stretch 2 of the Lima Subway Line 1 in Peru – in which Odebrecht Infrastructure participates –, is moving forward with multiple challenges. The most complex involves the construction of two bridges:one over the street Via de Evitamiento, which extends 270 meters, and one over the Rímac River, which extends 240 metros. In the two cases, the new construction method, being used for the first time in the country, will allow for the installation of the bridges within the deadline established without affecting the region’s traffic.Called Carros de Avance(Carriages) or “progressive cantilever assembly,” the methodology involves a mold placed at the upper part of a column, which then slides over the rails and moves at each pillar, filling each one with concrete. As the beams advance in opposite directions – five meters on each side per week – the construction sequence ensures the continuity and balance of the construction work until achieving the union of the columns at the central point of the project.

One new bridge will be installed over the street Via de Evitamiento in Lima. Two “carriages” are used per bridge to lay the concrete for the columns

Preparation of Hydromechanical Systems

The construction work for the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant Generation Group 3 (GG3), in Rondônia, is progressing toward energy generation. The Members of Odebrecht Infrastructure are working to place the hydromechanical systems into operation:the Electromechanical Assembly team is installing the grids and gates and the Commissioning group is verifying the operationality of the processes in the released units. The hydromechanical systems consist of grids, cofferdam gates and fixed roller gates. The grids are assembled at the water outlet upstream, thereby preventing the entry of solid objects into

18

the machines’ hydraulic circuit. The cofferdam gates, installed upstream and the fixed roller gates, installed downstream, insulate the circuit. The assembly activities include the launch of equipment, parts and panels. The commissioning tests consist of checking the sealing of the gates, and in the case of the fixed roller gates, they are also conducted for the hydraulic centers and electric panels. The assembly and commissioning of the hydromechanical systems will allow for the flooding of the GG3 enclosures in order to conduct the commissioning tests and, later, generate energy at the plant’s third Power House.

The work to install the hydroelectric systems at the Santo Antônio HPP is 80% complete

Example of Innovation in Highway Construction At the start of May, Members of Odebrecht Infrastructure in Portugal presented a study about the integration of recycled materials into highway pavements during the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) International Conference,

projects and another was obtained when removing the existing pavements to create a new highway platform. The materials were crushed and corrected before application in order to fulfill the parameters defined in the technical specifications. The “eco-aggregates”

held in Rotterdam, Holland. The event addressed the management, maintenance, repair and improvement of structures in the infrastructure sector. Entitled New Recycled Aggregates in Highway Pavements, the study by Bruno Medeiros, Gonçalo Matos, João Ferreira and Fernando Martinho – one of those registered for the 2011 Destaque Award in the Innovation category – was submitted for the evaluation of the IABSE Committee, together with another 275 articles from several different countries.Selected by the association, the project addresses the screening process, valuing and reuse of two types of construction waste in the pavement structure for a stretch of the road of the BaixoTejosub-concession. One of the types of waste was recovered from the demolition of different special civil construction

were applied to the pavement bed layer. The results exceeded the technical specifications, at a lower cost and a shorter deadline, in addition to promoting a more sustainable environment. IABSE is a non-profit scientific association that promotes the sharing of knowledge throughout the world, with a focus on the innovations discovered in the area of structural civil engineering in benefit to the professional and society.Founded in 1929 and with head office in Zurich, it has some 4,000 members in 100 countries, for a total of 48 national delegations. In Brazil, it is represented by the Brazilian Association of Bridges and Structures (ABPE). During the months of April and May, Members in the leadership programs at PPP Schools – Specific Purpose Society “Innovate BH” –, implemented by Odebrecht Infrastructure and Odebrecht Properties to build and administer schools in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, participated in the seminar Odebrecht Strategy for Excellence in SHE (Workplace Safety, Health and Environment). Separated into two modules – Awareness Raising and Behavioral Dialogue –, the initiative brought participants a reflection about the cultural evolution in SHE and addressed topics such as discipline, commitment, leadership through example and vision of these areas as value added to the Business.“Workplace Safety, Health and Environment should become a value that is incorporated into the daily routine and reflected in the actions at the construction sites,” emphasized Adauto Milanez, responsible for SHE at PPP Schools, and head of the seminar. In the Behavioral Dialogue, the leader was oriented about the approach technique for Members, to encourage them to reflect and perform self-evaluations about the risks of accidents or occupational diseases. The method consists of observing, intervening and questioning about the consequences of the deviation identified. For Bruno Tiere, Contract director of the PPP Schools, these meetings represented an opportunity to reinforce the need for everyone to feel responsible for the practice of prevention.“The ones who implement SHE are the Members of all areas, who receive the support of specialists such as technicians and Safety and Environment engineers and Health professionals,” he said.

The Wives of Odebrecht Agroindustrial Members gathered to overcome the challenges of moving together through the Spouses’ Program

The Benefits of Change Living far from one’s family to seek out professional and personal growth often also requires adapting to new customs. In order to show the good side that a major move can bring, in June, Odebrecht Agroindustrial promoted yet another Spouses’ Meeting at the Araguaia Center, an event designed for the wives of Members. During the first meeting, held in April, approximately 80 participants took part and were encouraged to deal productively with the differences.“In order to minimize the cultural shock, it is necessary to adopt a positive stance on the new life and local habits,” revealed psychologist Andréa Fuks, a consultant who develops the program as well at other Odebrecht companies. Two groups were formed at the event:one focused on the adaptation of new Members – “Friendly Shoulder” –, and another designed for the community – ABEM.After structuring the projects, during the second meeting the teams had the chance to share the next steps. In the “Friendly Shoulder” program, the group

sought out actions to promote the adaptation of new families, primarily when the Members come from other regions. “We publicize the city, its unique characteristics and sources of education, culture and leisure,” explained Fernanda Amoroso, wife of Rodrigo Amoroso, Agricultural Manager of the ÁguaEmendada Unit. The Mineiros Association for Good (ABEM) developed incentives to benefit people from the community where they currently reside.“We began evaluating the situation in the city of Mineiros, going to some of the institutions and visiting the Municipal Secretary of Social Action to better understand the municipality’s reality.“We have several projects underway,” said Paula Baracho, wife of ÉricoBaracho, Manager of People and Administration at the Araguaia Center. For Daniela Sebalhos, People & Organization Coordinator at the Araguaia Center, this movement is here to stay.“The benefit extends to all Members of Odebrecht Agroindustrial, as well as all those inserted into these communities,” said Sebalhos.

he relationship with the land goes way back.Since he was just 12 years old, Marcelo Roma has been in contact with the rural area.Son of a farmer and resident of the community of Gendiba, located in the Bahia municipality of Presidente Tancredo Neves, at age of 23, the youth has already treaded his own path:“I’m a rural entrepreneur and I had the chance to change my own history,” he explained.“It is the time to focus on work and development in the rural region.” Roma is a former student of the Presidente Tancredo Neves Rural Family Home (CFR-PTN) – an institution associated with the Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental Protection Area Mosaic Program for Development and Growth Integrated with Sustainability (PDCIS), supported by the Odebrecht Foundation together with public and private partners. In 2012, he completed his technical qualification in Agriculture integrated with High School – training that is based on Trade-Off Teaching:one week that is full-time, learning in both the classroom and on the field, and another two weeks on his family’s property, applying the new knowledge acquired. During his three years at CFR-PTN, he learned about rural administration,

cooperativism, soil management, irrigation and drainage, as well as a range of different crops. During the second year of the program, he developed two educational-production projects focused on banana and manioc planting.“I worked in partnership with a land owner from the region, since my family’s area is small, only two hectares and nearly all occupied,” he said. The raw materials necessary for the cultivation were supplied with the support of the Tribute to the Future Program. Roma was able to overcome the different obstacles that appeared.“During the second planting, I expanded my projects by reinvesting the resources earned from the first:the cultivation of banana increased from one to three hectares, and manioc, from one to five,” he said.“It has always been my dream to work with agriculture, but before joining the House I was discouraged, because I didn’t have any profitability.” The crops guaranteed him financial return. However, the lack of land continued to be an obstacle, until an initiative created by CFR-PTN in partnership with the Presidente Tancredo Neves Rural Producers’ Cooperative (COOPATAN) – of which he is member and which is also a part of PDCIS – allowed him to expand

his crops. The Land Access Fund (FAT) is a mechanism designed to provide financial assistance to small producers, giving them the conditions to care for their agricultural projects and so that they can live exclusively and fully from their income generated in the field. Initially, seven youth were chosen by the fund and are receiving support to acquire land.Roma is one of them. In three months, the youth surpassed his goals, even anticipating his plantations.“I exceeded my budget and decided to invest what I had,” said Roma.“With the support of a partner, who also studied at CFR-PTN, we are working for a better future. We want to show the world that it makes no sense to be prejudiced against rural producers. We are the driving force of the city, of the world,” he emphasized. The youth is currently making plans to finalize the crop planting and acquire new areas to improve his income, currently around R$ 2,000 per month, with the crops developed on third party lands.“I would like the young farmers to have more opportunities, like I did,” he said.“A chance to change history.I fulfilled the dream of having a property, one I can call my own.My focus is here, since I’m the owner of my business.”

The children enjoyed recreational activities with “Lancita,” a doll that represents a soldier of the army

This year, the Odebrecht Infrastructure Ruta del Sol - Sector 2 project is implementing a series of actions to promote integration and create bonds of trust with the local community.Since January, three events involved approximately 1,300 people from the communities located near the construction site. The initiative receives the support of the National Army, which offers a space for holding lectures and sharing health care tips with children and adults – including dentistry –,

people.“We want to provide a moment of well-being and relaxation for the children, and accordingly, create emotional bonds between the public force and the community so that they may view us as ‘an army of everyone,’” explained John Alexander.
