Technicians from the Rio Barra Concessionaire watch the last tunnel detonation in S達o Conrado. The methodology used, called NATM, is considered the most adequate for rock excavations
4
D
ecember marked some major achievements for the Rio de Janeiro Subway Line 4, currently being built by the Rio Barra Concessionaire with the participation of Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil. December 9 marked the detonation of the last stretch of rock for the
tunnel workers. The equipment will operate between Ipanema and Gávea, neighborhoods with rock, clay and sand soil – the ideal kind for the use of the TBM. The “tatuzão” will open its course without passing under buildings or opening up holes on the surface of the streets, minimizing the impact for the
5-km tunnel that will connect the neighborhoods of Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado. With this phase concluded, the structure earned the title of the world’s largest tunnel between subway stations. The excavations began in September 2010. Because it passes through the inside of solid rock, the Drill & Blast (or NATM) method was adopted. The opening connected the two most highly used stations of the new line: Jardim Oceânico, where some 91,000 passengers per day are expected, and São Conrado, with the capacity for 61,000 people. For Governor Sérgio Cabral, it is a historical moment in the evolution of the city’s transport system: “Line 4 will be a very important legacy and will benefit some 300,000 people,” said Cabral. By the end of the month, the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), or “tatuzão,” will begin. The machine is called “Bárbara” in honor of the saint that protects miners and
population. “The project is complex,” said Marcos Vidigal, Contract Director of the Construtor Linha 4 Sul Consortium. “Rio de Janeiro is a densely population urban center, and this is why the construction methods were chosen thinking about the deadline of the project, but primarily about the nearby community,” he explained. Custom-made by the German company Herrenknecht, the “tatuzão” is the largest in Latin America and the largest to be used in subway construction work in Brazil. The equipment excavates from 15-18 meters per day, four times faster than the techniques used previously in Rio de Janeiro. The staves – concrete tunnels that will form the tunnels –, currently under production at the Leopoldina construction site, began to be taken to the underground area to be used by the TBM.
UNDERGROUND PROGRESS The construction work for the Rio de Janeiro Subway Line 4 is also moving

forward along the other stretches. At the Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz construction site in Ipanema, the paving of the slab is complete and the station roof is already under construction. At the Praça Antero de Quental station in Leblon, and at the future stations Jardim de Alah and Gávea, the excavations have already begun. This involves Jet Grouting (method used to seal and structure the soil), the construction of the station walls and also the relocation of the underground public supply networks. At the Jardim Oceânico Station in the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, the walls have also been finalized and the excavation work is complete for the space that will serve as the site for the subway platform and two access

ways to the street Avenida Armando Lombardi. Along the stretch between Barra da Tijuca and Gávea, the excavation service using the “tatuzão” continues non-stop 24 hours per day. The professionals are also working at an accelerated pace at the São Conrado Station. Having completed the tunnels, they are now focused on building the platforms and technical rooms for the future operation. “Rio de Janeiro is forging a new history when it comes to rapid transit and the subway Line 4 plays a crucial role in this project,” emphasized Leandro Azevedo, Senior Officer of Odebrecht Infrastructure – Brazil for Rio de Janeiro. Azevedo also cited other projects the Business is currently leading focused on the city’s
development, such as the TransOeste and TransOlímpica highway corridors and the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) in the port region. “Wherever we go, there is an important project underway – all designed to transform the city,” he said.
When completed, the Rio de Janeiro Subway Line 4 will transport some 300,000 people. It is estimated that
be able to use the city’s entire subway system paying only a single fare. The Rio Barra Concessionaire is completing the construction work for the stretch between Gávea and Ipanema through the Construtor Linha 4 Sul Consortium, formed by the companies Odebrecht Infrastructure – Brazil (leader), Queiroz Galvão and Carioca Engenharia; as well as the Construtor Rio Barra Consortium,
the new structure will reduce the circulation of approximately 2,000 vehicle per hour. The subway will extend 16 kilometers and have six stations: Jardim Oceânico, São Conrado, Gávea, Antero de Quental, Jardim de Alah and Nossa Senhora da Paz. Passengers will also

Aerial view of PROSUB EBN. The assembly of the Shipyard Construction pillars should be completed by the end of December
New Structure Visible in the EBN The projects for the Submarine Manufacturing Shop building (4110), of Shipyard Construction, – initiated in October by Odebrecht Infrastructure Brazil – moved forward in the South area as part of the construction project for the new shipyard and naval base of Submarine Development Program (PROSUB), Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro. The hoisting of the two first pillars took place on October 22, using two cranes with a capacity for 260 and 100 tons. In all, 33 pillars weighing 45 tons will be assembled, each one formed by three metal structures joined by screwed connections that eliminate the need for welding, characterizing the activity as a “cold project.”
10
The work front for the Main Hall, as it is called the main building workshop, involves 89 Members under the leadership of civil engineer Rafael Libardi. He explained that in order to guarantee the durability of the pillars, a hot galvanization process was used through immersion into a zinc-based substance, which prevents corrosions: “The structures also receive a coating of intumescent paint that expands when heated, ensuring that the metal profile does not reach temperatures that may compromise it structurally, such as in the case of a fire,” explained Libardi. In January 2014, the work will begin to assemble the 16 modules weighing approximately 50 tons each and which together form the roof of the Main Building.
Knowledge Acquired and Shared The Odebrecht Shared Service Center (SSC) took part in the 7 th Annual Conference about International Treasury Management, Cash Flow and Risks for Companies in Brazil, promoted by the Economist Group (responsible for the newspaper The Economist), on November 12. The theme of this edition was Creating a High Performance Treasury for the Future. Dilson Zanatta Filho, leader of the SSC, gave the lecture about the creation of the area at the Organization, the processes that the team completes and the achievements and challenges faced over its five years of existence: “The Odebrecht SSC is not mandatory, and accordingly, we have to influence the entrepreneur by presenting the services as a competitive solution that supports the Line and which optimizes indirect costs, Corporate Security and the quality of the delivery,” said Filho. At the end of the presentation, Dilson Zanatta answered the public’s questions,
including those related to the importance of preserving the autonomy of the entrepreneurs at Odebrecht, even when they decide to work with the support of a SSC. “We sometimes work as consultants on specific topics – something that is commonplace in the Tax and Accounting areas – but it is also important to point out that the decision is always up to the entrepreneur,” said Zanatta. The following topics were addressed at the conference: the foreign exchange market, bank connectivity, fraud and tax law. Carolyn Meier, General Director of Eurofinance, pointed out that the 2013 program conducted an analysis of how the finance area can offer a solid base, although one with a flexible structure, to adequately adjust to changes in the environment. “Now more than ever, companies need to ensure that their Treasury area is prepared for the future, driving profitable and sustainable growth,” she said.
The event is included on the agenda of the international program Eurofinance, which promotes conferences for companies focused on current topics from the financial universe.

It is expected that the first stage of the project reaches 81% completion by the end of 2013
Technological Benefit The first phase of the group of buildings at the Federal District Administrative Center (CADF) will be completed in March 2014. The construction uses the BubbleDeck system, Danish technology that involves the insertion of plastic polypropylene spheres between two steel screens to form concrete preslabs. The methodology was introduced in Brazil with the support of Braskem, the raw material (resin) supplier for the company which produces the spheres. The advantages of this method include boosted productivity and the reduced consumption of concrete and carbon gas emissions. Another benefit is the weight of the slabs, which are up to 35% lighter than the traditional ones. The CADF construction site produces 1,000 m² of BubbleDeck pre-slabs daily. According to André Araújo, Contract Director, in addition to reducing costs, the insertion
12
of the new technologies at the project helps increase the Members’ safety. “With the method, which is present in 90% of the slabs, we reduced the consumption of concrete and steel, cut the number of man-hours worked and were able to obtain an average productivity of 11,800 m² slabs per month, allowing us to reach the record of 23,000 m² slabs in July.” Built by the Construtor CADF Consortium, formed by Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil and Via Engenharia, the development will serve as the head office for approximately 15,000 public servants from the Federal District Government (GDF) departments. The initiative resulted from a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between GDF and Centrad – a consortium agreement established between Odebrecht Properties and Via Engenharia, responsible for maintaining and operating CADF for a 21-year period.

Progress for Energy Production Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil, responsible for building the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), in Rondônia, celebrated the reverse energization of the first Generation Group 3 (GG3) Elevator Transformer. The process occurred after the electromechanical assembly and application of the commissioning tests in the Transmission, Supervision, Control, Protection and Telecommunications Systems. The GG3 tests will continue at the Gas Isolated Substation (GIS), in the Protection, Control and Supervision Systems and in the Telecommunications of the power plant. On another work front, the team is implementing GSC (Generator State Coordinator), the tool responsible for monitoring the plant’s energy generation. The process meets the needs of Brazil’s National Energy Connection System (SIN). At the GG4, the electromechanical began the pre-assembly work for the first Rotor in November. It is the rotating part of the
generator, which is designed to produce a constant magnetic field for energy production. Some 20 Members worked to assemble the part, which weighs approximately 180 tons and consists of a magnetic ring with 72 poles, which are joined through 288 thread rods. Among the improvements already made to the process is the replacement of the manual chain block, used to install the poles in the ring. This helps improve the workers’ ergonomics and safety, while also generating gains in productivity. Nivaldo Braz, Pre-Assembly Supervisor, explains that assembling Bulb machines was something new for both him and for his team. “We are overcoming the challenge,” said Braz. “Today, our labor is already trained.” The adjustment mechanic Welington Rafael Nascimento reveals that found at the Santo Antônio HPP the space he needed to grow on a professional and personal level: “I feel accomplished,” said Nascimento. “Here, I learn every day and I have prospects for growth.”
The pre-assembly of the GG4 Generator Rotor is taking place in a warehouse for streamlining the Generator Unit assembly process. Tools and devices were also created to optimize the work.

Illustrious Visitors The cable cars now operating in the communities of Complexo do Alemão and Morro da Providência, in Rio de Janeiro, built by Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil, were chosen by the Government of Switzerland as successful project models with integration between rapid transit and social development. On November 20, the minister of Foreign Relations, Yves Rossier; regional coordinator for South America, Pietro Piffaretti; Swiss ambassador in Brazil, André Regli and the consul general, Hans-Ulrich Tanner, visited the new means of transport in the communities. In Providência, the group was welcomed by Rodrigo Jurdi, Contract Director; Nilo Sergio, Contract Manager; João Henrique Rato, a representative of the Municipal House Department; and Rafael Lemos, a representative a Doppelmayr in Brazil. “The Providência cable car is yet more proof that we are not delivering just a construction project – we are leaving a
legacy for the community,” said Rodrigo Jurdi. “The project was developed to be integrated with the bus, train and subway,” he said. Extending 721 meters, with three stations – Central do Brasil, Praça Américo Brum and Gamboa – and with 16 different cabins, the cable car will transport approximately 1,000 people per hour in each direction. At the Complexo do Alemão cable car, the group could see the improvements the system for the community. In addition to the transport, the population has access to the public services and social projects. “We received some very interesting information about the urban projects undertaken in these communities,” said Yves Rossier. “The low income communities have become an important factor of social inclusion due to their own growth logic. Rio de Janeiro is analyzing this new paradigm and creating projects geared toward sustainable development,” said Rossier.

The Maracanã skateboarding park extends 700 m², with 1 m at the lowest point and 2.40 m at the deepest part.
Tested and Approved On December 4, Bob Burnquist, one of the greatest Brazilian skateboarders of all times, tried out the new skate park at the Maracanã complex – part of the city planning project underway around the stadium that is being built by Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. With its windy shape, the park is known as “snake.” Its rounded edges in the shallow part, which are referred to as the “roll over” type, facilitate the practice of the sport. “I found the park to be a lot of fun,” explained Burnquist. “The lines and curves help improve the speed and you can do a different move at each point,” he said after testing the park at the invitation of the engineer responsible for the project from the Municipal Department of Public Works, Mauro Bonelli. The structure is located in the middle of the walkway that connects the neighborhood of Quinta da Boa Vista (temporary FIFA parking) to Maracanã. “Because it is close the stadium, the skateboarding and soccer groups can meet up,” said the skateboarder. The city planning work around Maracanã will be completed by March of 2014.

new differentials that add value to the fans’ experience. In addition to being more modern, comfortable and safe, Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova became a multi-use space without forgetting to offer that which most thrills the fans: the passion for soccer. Administered by the Fonte Nova Negócios e Participações (FNP) concessionaire – formed by Odebrecht Properties and OAS Arenas –, the space has hosted 34 national and international games and accommodated some 653,000 fans since its inauguration on April 7, with an average of 19,000 people per game. The hosted events include three Confederations Cup games with the teams from Uruguay, Nigeria, Italy and Brazil. Esporte Clube Bahia, as the host team for the games of the Bahia Championship, Brazil Cup, Brazilian Championship and South American Cup, made 28 goals during the 25 games held on the “home field.” The highlight was the last game of the year, held December 8 against the team Fluminense, which recorded a public of 40,249 people. Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova also had a busy year with 27 cultural, corporate and musical events that involved over 60,000 people. It also established an agreement

GROWING WITH PERNAMBUCO In December 2013, Itaipava Arena Pernambuco is celebrating six months of operation. After overcoming the challenge of delivering the stadium eight months ahead of time, which occurred on April 14, the new arena has already hosted 21 Brazilian Championship games and two South American Cup games. Over 300,000 people watched the Brazilian Championship games in individual, comfortable seats that meet international quality standards. The acoustics of the stadium impressed the fans and the athletes had praise for both the field and the locker rooms.
Fans also noticed the quality of the safety and structure. The new experience reflected a shift in the behavior of the general public: entire families once again began to frequent the grandstands. During this short period, Itaipava Arena Pernambuco also consolidated its multi-use structure. The Greatest Show on Earth – the official recording for the DVD of Bahia singer Cláudia Leitte – was the first major event after soccer to be held at the stadium. On August 3, the stadium was stage to stars from the Brazilian pop scene during 10 hours of musical performances. The Volvo showroom and the 1st Sports Event Safety Meeting revealed the arena’s use for activities focused on different areas.

LOCAL PASSION Maracanã is ending the year with some excellent numbers and good perspectives for 2014. During the 50 games held until December 12, the goal nets shook a total of 135 times. With an average of three games per week, the structure of the space also proved beneficial for the performances. According to a survey by the DataFolha Institute about the quality of the services offered, 94% of the public that frequents the stadium considers it “a good place to take the family” and 82% believe that “Maracanã is better than before the remodeling work.” Visibility and
comfort were also points highlighted. In order to guarantee international quality services, the concessionaire has 2,000 to 2,500 people working per game to support fans. Operating for the past five months under the administration of the Maracanã Concessionaire, the final match between Flamengo and Atlético Paranaense, which earned the former the title of Brazil Cup champion and also guaranteed its spot in the Liberators of America Cup, had a record public at the stadium: 68,857 people. development,” said Pessoa, who received the trophy from Paul Altit, Entrepreneurial Leader. The theme of this edition was: “Where is Rio de Janeiro Going with its Growth?” According to João Paulo Rio Tinto de Matos, President of ADEMI, is a question that has different answers. “Rio is a plural territory,” said Matos. “It rediscovered its most distant areas, sought out new centralities and built new demographic and economic axes,” he said. According to the Vice Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Fernando Pezão, the state’s economy has once again shown solid growth each year. “Part of this promising scenario is due to the real estate market, which is investing in and driving the development of different regions, building diversified developments,” said Pezão.

Stories Recovered and Awarded The 10 th edition of the Odebrecht Historical Research Award - Clarival do Prado Valladares in 2013 chose two winners. The projects One Scrubland Among Many Others, by Nathalia Diniz, and The Scientific Knowledge of the Portuguese World of the 18 th Century by Magnus Roberto de Mello Pereira and Ana Lúcia Rocha Barbalho da Cruz, were chosen among the five finalists. Nathalia Diniz analyzed the rural architecture associated with the “ranch industry” in the Scrublands of the North – currently the states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Bahia – during the 19 th century. As part of a compared perspective, Cruz investigates the archive of 116 farm houses, pointing out the similarities and specific characteristics of the architectural environment and seeking to point out the intrinsic vernacular logics and relate these to the materials, techniques and available construction systems. The project by Magnus Roberto de Mello Pereira and Ana Lúcia Rocha Barbalho da Cruz investigates how the Portuguese-Brazilian intellectual elite was responsible for scientific development during the second half of the 18 th century – primarily within the
sphere of astronomy and cartography – as how this was reflected as well in the Portuguese colonies of Africa and Asia. The judging committee was made up of the Architect and City Planner Francisco Senna, specialist in the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Historical Buildings, and member of the Bahia Academy of Arts and Letters; Fernando da Rocha Peres, permanent member of the Bahia Academy of Arts and Letters and author of several books of poetry; Roberto Pompeu de Toledo, journalist and columnist of Veja magazine; José Murilo de Carvalho, member of the Brazilian Academy of Arts and Letters and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Head Professor of Brazilian History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ); Márcio Polidoro, responsible for Communication at Odebrecht S.A.; and José Enrique Barreiro, journalist and editor, and President of Versal Editores, the company that edits and publishes the Odebrecht Historical Research books. In this edition, the award received 215 projects from 20 states. Each year, a project is chosen and its author receives the necessary support for the research and publication of an art book.

In Venezuela, the Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development held its first edition. Students from Carabobo University (UC) and Rafael Belloso Chacín University (URBE) were this year’s winners. Joel Moscosso, Kiara Nieves and Mariangel Torres, from the Chemical Engineering course at UC, developed the project “Production of Nationally Manufactured Automotive Catalytic” Converters, designed to reduce the toxic emissions of automobiles into the environment. The project “Proposal of a Plant for Recycling Electronic Waste,” by Aliglé Larreal and Jackleiker Campos, from the Mass
Communication and Civil Engineering courses at RBE, respectively, earned second place with their solution to recycle electronic devices. The award ceremony was held on November 14. José Claudio Daltro, responsible for Administration, Finances and Planning at Odebrecht Venezuela, pointed out that since the first edition of the award in 2010, some 300 students have already taken part in the initiative. “This year, we received works from 19 universities in the country,” said Daltro. “Of these, 11 were selected as finalists,” he said. The event was attended by Juan Carlos Sánchez, who earned a doctorate in Environmental Sciences and won the Noble Peace Prize in 2007. He spoke about the role engineering plays in climate change. “Over the past three decades, the planet’s temperature has increased to an alarming level,” he said. “This causes a profound change in the dynamics and balance of the Earth’s ecosystem.” Juan Carlos Sánchez emphasized the importance of the initiative: “The great virtue of the award is encouraging the youth to think about sustainability while working as a team.” For him, engineers play a crucial role for ensuring
sustainable development, since they can create projects with innovative alternatives. Sánchez also shared information about climate change. “The gases resulting from the consumption of fossil fuels, carbon and hydrocarbons accumulate in the atmosphere and cause the greenhouse effect, which progressively heats up the planet,” he said. Different activities produce gases, such as industries, vehicle transport and deforestation. “Each year, we release approximately 9 million tons of carbon.” According to a study conducted by the University of Hawaii, by 2037, the average temperature in Caracas, Venezuela will be 37°C.

construction projects. The first day was dedicated to presentations about the use of the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), equipment that is better known as the “tatuzão,” used to drill and line tunnels. The participants split up to visit three different projects: the South and West stretches of the Rio de Janeiro Subway Line 4 and Maravilha Port – both being completed by Odebrecht Infrastructure Brazil. “Along the South stretch, we followed the excavation of the tunnel that will extend from Ipanema to Gávea,” said Danilo Abdanur, Production Manager at the Los Teques Subway in Venezuela and leader of the Community of Knowledge. “It is a major challenge, traversing rocky and sandy terrains that cross underneath different buildings,” he said. Along the West stretch, 13 participants observed the construction of tunnels using the Drill & Blast method. The visit to Maravilha Port brought the group, which is formed by 25 people, information about the revitalization project in the Rio de Janeiro port region, marked by rich diversity due to the different segments of the projects.
On the following day, there were lectures on the Road Stations and Tunnels and Transport Systems, and Members learned more about two success stories: the delivery of the first phase of the Lima Subway Line 1 in Peru, and the progress of the work for the Panama Subway Line 1; together with a presentation about Sustainability at the subway constructions. In the end, the group took part in a debate to define the future course of the Community of Knowledge. The next meeting was scheduled for 2015 in Lima, Peru. “These meetings are very valid in terms of exchanging experiences, going on technical visits to projects of major technological importance and they also serve as opportunities for establishing new professional relationships,” emphasized Danilo Abdanur. During the meeting, the virtual environment of the Community of Knowledge was highlighted as an important consultation tool. “With it, we have the following records available: presentations of the meetings and the Tunnel Worker Training Program, technical articles and the book of Best Practices, as well the offer of a forum for dialogue
between Members,” explained Danilo Abdanur. For the leader, the portal also offers live discussions and interactions remotely. “Through the Community, we also organized ourselves into work groups to support projects in the study and proposal phase,” he said.
Along the South stretch of the Rio de Janeiro Subway, the visit gathered 60 participants who also learned more about the project’s recently assembled TBM

T
he first Odebrecht Knowledge Network Training Program was created in 2011 as part of the Rail Transport Community of Knowledge. The program is focused on the technical qualification of Members for

tunnel construction projects. The initiative opened up the path for the development of other types of training. “The idea emerged during the 2009 meeting in Venezuela, when we saw that there was a lack of technical programs at the Organization, said Danilo
Group from the 2nd Tunnel Worker Training Program Module. “We have two main missions at Odebrecht: the first is to surpass the client’s expectations and the second is to prepare professionals to guarantee the Organization’s growth.” – Carlos Henrique Turolla Maia
Abdanur, Production Manager at the Los Teques Subway in Venezuela, and leader of the Community of Knowledge. The program is developed at a distance through the Community of Knowledge portal together with onsite meetings. Danilo Abdanur
pointed out: “For the youth, the initiative is an opportunity for them to be introduced to their areas. For the more mature ones, it is a way of going more in-depth with the theory about activities that they sometimes only knew about in practice.”

THE PIONEERS From November 4-6, an on-site meeting was held as part of the second module of the 3rd edition of the Tunnel Worker Training Program in Rio de Janeiro. The 27 participating Members studied the precast concrete rings for the TBM; Workplace Safety during excavation processes; excavation methodologies with TBM and TBM machine and equipment. The Members also visited the construction work for the Rio de Janeiro Subway Line 4. Having worked at the Organization for 34 years, Carlos Henrique Turolla Maia, Production Manager at the São Paulo Subway Line 5, pointed out that he has witnessed the development of leadership programs, although very few dedicated to Members’ technical training. “We need big entrepreneurs, but also good technicians,” said Maia. “The course allows for a constant updating of skills and this has been

very useful for our daily routine,” he said. For him, the program serves to disseminate the learning in the field and also allows for contact with specialists from the Organization and professionals from the area.
REPLICATING GOOD RESULTS From November 4-8, 72 Members of the Highway Community of Knowledge met in São Paulo for the meeting of the second module of the 1st edition of the Paving Training Program. Mauro Hueb, Senior Officer of Odebrecht in Cuba and leader of the Community of Knowledge, talked about the special measures adopted to structure the course. “We sought out a professional with recognized competency in the area and who was also very familiar with the Organization to help identify content that would work well for us,” said Hueb. Engineer Rodrigo Vasconcellos, consultant at the company Copavel,
was then invited to join in on the challenge and created a curriculum with different course focuses and renown lecturers. The topics addressed at the event included special asphalt emulsions; asphalts modified with tire rubber; the application of asphalt mixtures with Terpolymer; rigid airport pavements; the international progress made evaluating the performance of modified mixtures and workplace quality and safety procedures. The participants observed road system traffic systems and the evaluation of toll highway escape routes; highway maintenance engineering projects and road maintenance and monitoring administration
systems. “The interaction between the Members and the experienced instructors helped promote technical training, but also updated their knowledge on the latest market trends,” said Hueb. The group also developed a case study about BR-050, the highway that connects Brasília to Santos in São Paulo, and also took part in a technical visit of the pavement installation and rehabilitation work completed by the Rota das Bandeiras Concessionaire, an Odebrecht TransPort asset. “There was a high level of participation in the program and there is a demand for us to repeat the initiative,” said Hueb.
The 1st edition of the Paving Training Program gathered 72 Members. The initiative helps the Community move forward with its goal of achieving excellence in the quality of highway projects

Pride Caught in Images “Art in the field is sowing, planting, producing and harvesting. It is actions like this one that allow the farmers from the region to generate income for their families,” explained Érica Nascimento, age 18 and student of the Agroforest Family Home (Cfaf) – a teaching unit associated with the Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental Protection Area Mosaic Program for Development and Growth Integrated with Sustainability (PDCIS), supported by the Odebrecht Foundation together with public and private partners. She showed her pride about living in the rural region through the image of a cacao plantation that was one of the winners of the PDCIS Photography Award, which mobilized students from the institutions associated with PDCIS from July to November. The contest was focused on creating a new perspective about the region where the youth live, encouraging them to care for the local resources and demonstrating their love for the land through photographs. “The elements that make up nature give life more meaning,” emphasized Aline Souza, age 16, student of the Youth Home State High School and also one of the winners. Feliciano Costa, age 17, was also author of one of the champion images. “When I photographed the flower, I was trying to capture the pollination, a moment marked by the renewal of life,” stated Costa, a student of the Presidente Tancredo Neves Rural Family Home. The award has a Facebook page that has received 400 “Likes” and that

F
rom November 25-29, the Organization’s head office in Salvador, Bahia, hosted “PDCIS Week.” PDCIS stands for the Bahia Southern Lowlands Environmental Protection Area Mosaic Program for Development and Growth Integrated with Sustainability. A chat with youth, theater play, craft exhibit, neutralization of CO2 emissions, the presentation of a video and special lunch were some of the actions designed to give Members of the Organization and visitors a better idea of what the reality in the Bahia Southern Lowlands is like. PDCIS is supported by the Odebrecht Foundation in partnership with the government, private initiative and civil society. The challenge is to contribute toward the social inclusion of the family units, generating jobs and working to promote the fair distribution of income, while also encouraging environmental conservation actions, the practice of citizenship and high quality rural education. There was demonstration of the region’s natural wealth and agricultural

potential through an exhibit at the building’s restaurant with products such as tilapia, heart of palm, pineapple, banana, manioc flour and handmade crafts created by those supported by the program. Other activities took place simultaneously, such as an informal chat with cooperative members and youth, including Ubiratan Santos, a student from the Presidente Tancredo Neves (CFRPTN) Rural Family Home, a teaching unit associated with PDCIS that offers professional-technical teaching in the area of Agriculture integrated with high school classes. “By applying the right techniques, I realized that I could support myself through agriculture,” said Santos. at Odebrecht Properties and one of those responsible for the action, the Organization operates in a diversified and synergistic way, with countless achievements that many of the Members do not know about. “An event that is integrated with the office routine is an excellent example of how we can disseminate the learning, knowledge and the objectives we have already met,” said Sá. Liana Fontenelle, responsible for the Organization’s Documentation and Reference Center in the Odebrecht S.A. Communication area, stated that she was happy to be able to participate. “The details were special and the interaction with the youth was impressive,” said Fontenelle. “They are leaders and are
prepared for life, demonstrating this with values that today are rare.” The activities included the sale of the bio-jewelry handcrafted by the members of the Pratigi Environmental Protection Area Rural Producers’ Cooperatives (COOPRAP). The Tribute to the Future team also worked to publicize the program and raise investments for the projects promoted in the Southern Lowlands, focused primarily on training young rural entrepreneurs. The Members also had the chance to measure the environmental impact of their actions and compensate them
through the Pratigi Neutral Carbon Program. The initiative is coordinated by the Land Conservation Organization (OCT), also associated with PDCIS. The funds earned are used to finance the reforestation of the water sources located in the Pratigi Environmental Protection Area (EPA). “Encouraging different ways of exchanging knowledge will help enrich our vision and understanding of the Organization even more,” said Sá. “In this case, it helped us better understand the investments and achievements earned by the Odebrecht Foundation in the Southern Lowlands,” he said.

Responsible for building eight units at the Abreu e Lima Refinery in Pernambuco, the CONEST Consortium – formed by Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial and OAS – began to use a attenuator silicone blanket, with lead and tungsten (Pb/W), to control the amount or radiation affecting the construction and assembly work for the refinery’s Hydrotreatment and Hydrogen Generation Units. The covering is placed over the equipment during the industrial x-ray tests and is designed to reduce the radiation levels and target radius during the gammagraphy work. With the use of the shielding mat, it was possible to work effectively and also during situations in which there is a restricted area, offering improved radiation protection for Members and to the environment alike.
