O
n April 8, the Route 323 Consortium - headed by Odebrecht TransPort and formed also by the companies Tucuman Engenharia, América Empreendimento e Goetze Lobato Engenharia - earned the rights to the 30-year concession for the corridor of PR-323 Highways, between Maringá and Francisco Alves, in the Northwest region of Paraná. Along its extension, the corridor has three different names, including the PR-323, PRC-487 and PRC272. Route 323 offered R$ 3.90 as the value of the toll fee to be charged along the highway – representing a reduction of 7.1% compared to the top value established in call for tender of R$ 4.20. This is the first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) undertaken in the state and the first Odebrecht TransPort asset in Paraná. The consortium will be responsible for the maintenance and conservation of approximately 220 kilometers (km). Plans are to duplicate 207 km by the 16th year of the concession, benefitting 14 municipalities from the region. The toll charge will only begin after the duplication of each stretch has been delivered.
12
During the concession, R$ 3.6 billion will be invested in maintenance and conservation work, as well as in services designed for users, who will have access to monitored and safer
streets, a 24-hour tow truck and first aid assistance. During the first five years, workers will build 19 viaducts, 22 barriers, 13 pedestrian overpasses, nine bridges, as well as shoulders and bicycle paths in the urban areas.
The new contract is the 20th Odebrecht TransPort asset, which now participates in eight highway concessions, administrating a total of 1,770 km of roads throughout the country.

Safety at Port The Maintenance team at Embraport – an Odebrecht TransPort asset responsible for the port terminal along the left bank of Santos Port in São Paulo – developed a creative and safe solution for the seal verification operation of containers, which need to be inspected on top of the trailers (ITVs or Terminal Tractors) at the terminal. The device, which is a first-of-its-kind in Santos, is currently operating in test phase and serves to block the movement of the trailer during the inspection, preventing the vehicle from moving before the inspector finalizes the operation. Alison Alves dos Santos, Maintenance Area Coordinator, explains that in this type of
operation, the driver’s vision is limited and it is hard for him or her to follow the inspector’s work, since it takes place on top of the vehicle. “With the blockage, the inspector has full control of the operation, making it efficient and safe,” said Santos. The device is presently installed in just one piece of equipment, but plans are to have it operating in all by June of this year. The Workplace Safety area approved the initiative and pointed out that it significantly enhances the terminal’s safety. “The seal verification process is performed frequently,” said Gustavo Queiroz, Workplace Safety Coordinator. “The new system will minimize any possible risks,” he said. How the Blockage System Works By pressing the red button, any movement of the equipment is blocked. The brake light of the vehicle lights up, indicating to the driver that the blockage was activated. At the end of his or her work, the inspector presses the green button and the brake light on the vehicle panel turns off, indicating to the driver that the work has been completed.

Odebrecht Agroindustrial currently cultivates over 80 varieties of sugarcane
Sugarcane Technology and Innovation In April, Odebrecht Agroindustrial and the Sugarcane Technology Center (CTC) celebrated an unprecedented agreement in Brazil to install genetic sugarcane improvement centers. The partnership includes the installation of experimental fields extending 25 hectares each at the Rio Claro and Morro Vermelho units, both in the state of Goiás. The units will receive a set of non-commercial varieties (clones) already pre-selected for the regional conditions. The Morro Vermelho unit will also receive another field for genetically modified organisms in order to conduct agronomic studies on the transgenic sugarcane – considered an important differential in terms of moving forward with sugarcane research – aiming to achieve gains in productivity and sustainability. “From the work with CTC, we hope to obtain an improved balance in the varieties of sugarcane, which maximizes the tons of sugars
produced per hectare, diversifies our portfolio and guarantees improved productivity for the company,” said Américo Ferraz, responsible for Agricultural Technology at Odebrecht Agroindustrial. The Rio Claro and Morro Vermelho units are part of the new model of regional centers focused on developing the CTC varieties, which duplicated from 12 to 24 units. The genetic improvement centers are strategically distributed throughout different plants so as to cover nearly all of the environments in which sugarcane is cultivated in Brazil. “The new model of CTC centers is focused on developing varieties adapted to the specific soil and climate conditions of each producing region and which meet the producers’ needs and expectations,” explained William Lee Burnquist, CTC Genetic Improvement Director. “The centers are already being prepared and certified for the transgenic sugarcane studies,” he said.

SuperVia Receives Oracle System Since January, Members of SuperVia – an Odebrecht TransPort company in Rio de Janeiro – have been working with the Oracle system to support their administrativefinancial activities. The project lasted one year and six months and was completed by the Odebrecht Information Technology area. Called On Track, the project generated benefits such as improved corporate security and the possibility of boosting the efficiency of the teams from the company’s support areas with tools such as XRT (financial and treasury support), Hyperion (management support) and eBS (administrative support). For Wagner Medeiros, Controllership Leader, the installation of the system represented a milestone. “SuperVia was the Organization’s first company, for example, to use the Project module to its fullest to monitor the progress of the investments in construction,” explained Medeiros. The Oracle system is part of the package of administrative-financial tools that have been installed at the Organization’s Businesses since 2012 with the O2 Project. It offers modules such as Finances, Accounting, Tax, Supply and Subcontracts, and for SuperVia, the solution was adapted to meet the company’s needs. “The Odebrecht Organization is on the right track toward having a single system to consolidate information and, in this way, meet the challenges established for the 2020 Vision,” said Caio Boggiss, Oracle eBS Project Leader at the Organization.

Commitment to Serve the Client
O
n June 4, 2013, when it drove in the first stake for the construction of the Petrópolis Brewery unit in Pernambuco, Walter Faria, President of the Petrópolis Group, proposed a challenge for the team of Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil, which is responsible for the work: to be able to brew the first batch of beer in just 10 months. Odebrecht agreed to serve its client and was able to successfully meet the challenge. The Petrópolis Group received its new unit on March 31, 2014 and, as planned, brewed its first batch on April 3, inaugurating the operation in Itapissuma, a municipality located some 50 kilometers from Recife. “We completed the construction work before 10 months were up and the client itself emphasized that it was a record for completing this type of plant,” said Ana Carolina Farias, Contract Director. Safety precautions were also reinforced to ensure that the project was concluded without any serious incidents. The team that headed up the development construction work consists
of 21 engineers, including nine women, representing a differential with relation to the general average. “Women’s participation brought new vision and created more dialogue between the teams in order to exchange knowledge and seek out solutions,” said Thales Mariano, the professional responsible for the Engineering area. Another unique characteristic is the young profile of the Members, who have an average age of 35. By gathering the professionals’ different ideas, the Itapissuma Petrópolis Brewery unit was created using a concrete structure, most of which was precast, and a “spatial” metal structure roof weighing a total of 960 tons. “The support of our Engineering Director, José Érico Dantas, was crucial in the quest to find technological innovations,” said Ana Carolina Farias. “We used cardboard molds for the rectangular pillars that were made in loco, and we brought a new molding technology from Germany to build the foundation elements, known as Pecafil - a plastic mold with steel elements,” said Farias.

PATHS OPEN On April 2, Walter Faria opened the doors of the factory to welcome then Pernambuco Governor, Eduardo Campos, for the inauguration of the mashing room – the site where the beer is brewed. The event was also attended by the Pernambuco Secretary of Economic Development, Márcio Stefanni, Mayor of Itapissuma, Cal Volia, and Senior Officer (DS) of Odebrecht Infrastructure - Brazil for the Northeast and Central-West, João Antonio Pacífico. Also participating were representatives of the Petrópolis Group responsible for the construction work: Cláudio Bolonhini, Civil Engineering Manager; Israel Martins, Corporate Project Manager; and Carlos de Paula, Plant Operation Manager. The first filling procedure, which represents the first beer bottling, took place on April 17, preparing the brewery for operating mode. The production capacity will be 6 million hectoliters of beer per year, with the possibility of increasing this volume. This is the third brewery built by Odebrecht Infrastructure- Brazil for the Petrópolis Group. The first was the Rondonópolis unit in Mato Grosso, and the second, in Alagoinhas, Bahia, delivered in November of last year. The Itapissuma unit reinforces the group’s presence in Brazil’s Northeastern region, where it also acquired the naming rights for Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova and Itaipava Arena Pernambuco.

SPACE FOR KNOWLEDGE The construction site in Itapissuma served a laboratory for seeking out technological innovations and boosting productivity. As a result of the knowledge acquired, nine innovation projects were signed up for the Odebrecht Technological Innovation Program (POIT). Additionally, the development received eight students from the region’s universities for the Vacation Internship Program, and also hired 10 interns under the program’s traditional format at the company. The Shared Services Center (SSC) also visited the project to improve the Line team’s knowledge. On March 14, the Organization held the first 2014 course under its Best Practices program. The topic of Taxes Withheld for Contracted Service was discussed by William Ker, SSC Tax Analyst, for Members of Odebrecht Infrastructure Brazil, including the Administrative-Financial Managers (GAFs), Assistants and those Responsible for the Program (RPs) from the projects currently being completed by the Business – Expressway, in Pernambuco, and Backland Channel in Alagoas –, from the Northeast and Central-West DS office, and from Itaipava Arena Pernambuco, an Odebrecht Properties asset.
The course is designed to offer a fiscal foundation to reduce the existing questions during document analyses and when contracting new service providers. “The idea to bring the Best Practices course to the Itapissuma construction site emerged when we identified the need to train our Members and the impossibility of sending them to São Paulo due to the speed of the construction work,” revealed Chafick Luedy, the project GAF. “We then thought about expanding the opportunity into the other Organization developments in the Northeast, which added new experiences, granted that knowledge was not only limited to the Petrópolis Brewery construction project,” said Luedy. For Andreza Moura, responsible for the Financial PR at the Petrópolis Brewery, the training was objective and dynamic, focused on the daily work routine. “It surpassed my expectations,” said Moura. “It balanced theory with practice through exercises for each situation.” First implemented in April 2013, the Best Practices program was developed with aims of sharing knowledge between SSC specialists and Members of the Organization’s Businesses in search of synergy and efficiency as part of the support offered by the area.
During 2013, the Best Practices program offered six courses involving the participation of 120 Members. The first edition of this year included the presence of 25 people

The Giants of Ethylene XXI
T
he Ethylene XXI project, currently being built in Veracruz, Mexico, headed by Odebrecht Engenharia Industrial with the participation of the companies Technip and ICA-FLUOR, moved forward with the electromechanical and assembly phases. In April, it began to receive the large parts for the petrochemical complex that will be administered by the joint venture formed by Braskem and the Mexican group Idesa. Some of these parts include bullets (propylene gas storage tanks), boilers, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels and furnaces, in addition to the C2Splitter (gas separation tower used to obtain ethylene), the largest part for the project in terms of size and weight: it is 92 meters long and weighs 880 tons. The equipment weighs a total of 7,247 tons and originates from countries such as Italy, India, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Poland and China. Due to their specific sizes and characteristics, the parts require careful maneuvering during the six-kilometer trip to transport them between the Coatzacoalcos Integral Port Administration (APICOAT) installations in the industrial zone, continuing on along Rodovia 180 – the highway that
54
connects the country’s South and Southeast regions – until reaching the construction site in the city of Nanchital. Patricio Barbis, responsible for Logistics at Ethylene XXI, revealed that the programming is carefully planned and the work is undertaken with precaution. Some 50 people take part in the maneuvers, including traffic and Federal Police authorities, together with Members from the project’s Safety team. “The highway receives approximately 26,000 vehicles per day,” said Barbis. “The coordination between the participants of each maneuver must be very precise in order to avoid incidents. “We cannot move a part without being completely certain that the logistics strategy will work,” he said. The main challenge was to transport the C2-Splitter, considering that the Veracruz access ways do not have the adequate size for moving parts of this size. “The infrastructure in the region of Veracruz did not allow us to easily move the equipment and we had to adapt it,” explained Barbis. Once the transport phase was concluded, workers began assembling this equipment at its respective permanent sites. The Ethylene XXI project began in 2010 and should be concluded in 2015.
Starting from the left: Bullet, Boiler, Radiant Box (for production using the ethane cracker), and the C2Splitter. Together with the other “mega parts received by the project, all the material together weighs as much as the metal structure of the Eiffel Tower in Paris

The Ethylene XXI project is currently building one of the world’s largest petrochemical complexes in Mexico. It is training a new generation of knowledgeable, talented and creative youth, who stand out by generating innovative ideas for each challenging construction process. The HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is an example of this dynamic. The team created a modern construction method called the “modularization of
56
INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY the first generation,” which includes a system that optimizes completion time by up to 40%. The initiative involves preassembling structures using modules that weigh up to 200 tons, with previously installed mechanical equipment. The modules are hoisted by an 800-ton capacity crane into the reaction and polymerization unit buildings, which can reach up to 72 meters high. Before the innovation, it took up to seven weeks to install the structures. Today, it takes workers from three to
four weeks. The method also reduced the number of Members required to work at risky heights and cut the cost and number of people on the assembly platform team. The work that was completed in teams, involving areas such as Planning, Engineering, Logistics, Storage, Subcontract, Equipment, Civil Construction and Safety, is the basis for ensuring that each maneuver can be performed successfully and that the strategy can meet the objective of facilitating the installation of the structures and boosting productivity.

Sustainability:
From the Origin to Perpetuity
I
n 2014, the Organization completes 70 years, and in order to celebrate the date, Odebrecht News will be publishing a series of special stories. Each article will present a theme, revealing how Odebrecht became more qualified, innovated and contributed toward the evolution of this topic. In this edition, you’ll find a special article about Sustainability. “We are an Organization that continuously renews itself and whose foundation consists of principles and values that incorporate in essence the concept of Sustainability,” said Sérgio Leão, responsible for Sustainability at Odebrecht S.A. Sustainability is something intrinsic to the Odebrecht Entrepreneurial Technology (TEO). From the very foundation of the Organization, the topic has permeated the developments, following the belief that development, by definition, is sustainable or it cannot be considered development. Whether during the planning of a civil engineering project, the attention given to the community and its economy or the care taken with the environment surrounding an industrial unit, for example, Odebrecht believes that it is necessary to work today thinking about tomorrow.
60
SÉRGIO LEÃO joined the Organization in 1992. He earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1974, and completed his doctorate in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at the University of California - Berkeley in 1981. After dedicating 20 years of his career to the Engineering and Construction area at Odebrecht, Leão has been responsible for the Sustainability area at Odebrecht S.A. since 2013. Among his contributions to Odebrecht’s operations, he helped create the Odebrecht Award for Sustainable Development in 2008, which challenges university students to think about engineering from a sustainable perspective – a way to encourage these future professionals to incorporate the topic into their career.
61 61
PIONEERING APPROACH It can be said that Odebrecht is a pioneer on the topic, given that it has carried, within its very essence, the principles of Sustainability for 70 years now. The focus on people, so that well-prepared and motivated, they can serve as agents of sustainable development when operating its developments and in the communities, is one of the foundations of the culture practiced at the Organization. “This led us to combine the economic with the environmental, and both of these with the social long before talks about the sustainability trio [social, environmental and economic],” said Sérgio Leão. The market’s first steps in this area occurred during the 1970s, with aims of treating water and air pollution and expanding sanitation services. Topics such as biodiversity protection and natural resource conservation were still in the early stages. “The integration of the social component would come later,” said Leão. “Companies operated in a reactive sense.” According to the leader, the concept of sustainability developed with the integration of topics that orient the companies’ actions. These companies, in turn, operate based on the vision that they are part of a larger whole and interact with a universe of organizations, governments and formal and informal representations of society. “The companies evolved a great deal during this period,” he said. “Most go beyond the requirement to comply with legislation.”
62
VISION OF THE FUTURE As one of the principles practiced by Odebrecht, the topic evolved at the Organization, always through Businesses and the exchange of knowledge and internal experiences. The basis for this evolution is the practice and focus on what makes sense to each Business. It occurs through the work of the Members along the Line and through their interaction with the communities. In order to orient them, the first version of the Organization’s Sustainability Policy was created in 2008 (reviewed and updated in 2011), reflecting the topic’s development at the different Businesses, auxiliary companies, support area and Odebrecht Foundation. “The policy shows how Sustainability occurs in practice,” said Leão. “It results from the evolution we already had in the form of specific guidelines in each environment and reflects the evolution of our vision of how Sustainability is contained within the TEO,” he said. In 2010, the Organization developed the 2020 Vision, designed to serve as orientation for where Odebrecht wants to be in 2020: an Organization formed by Knowledgeable People capable of satisfying Clients through innovative solutions that contribute toward a better world, promoting the sustainable growth of the Organization and the environment in which they work. Together, the policy and 2020 Vision highlight the role of each Member as an agent of change to ensure that sustainable development occurs in his or her environment.
“The practice of Sustainability should also be seen from our perspective as citizens. As Members, we have the conditions to influence changes and transform. However, the coherence with our individual positioning is something crucial. There is no parttime sustainability. It is as much an attitude on life as it is an imperative for our survival and that of our dependents” Sérgio Leão
Cultural Contribution By joining people from different Brazilian states and from another 22 countries, Odebrecht combines all the cultural diversity of these populations. Amidst such a rich environment, one of the focuses dedicated to the community in Sustainability initiatives is the recognition of culture. In 2014, Odebrecht is celebrating 55 years of Cultural Contribution, demonstrating yet again its pioneering approach when it comes to Sustainability. Since 1959, it has invested in initiatives that recover artistic values and promote the preservation of the historical heritage in those regions in which it operates, sponsoring the production and launch of cultural publications. The work Homenagem à Bahia Antiga (“Tribute to Old Bahia”), by José Valladares, represented the first sponsorship and currently, there are over 200 titles that have been published with the Organization’s support.
In 2003, the Organization began to promote the Odebrecht Historical Research Award Clarival do Prado Valladares – granted each year to a research project found to contribute significantly toward an improved understanding of Brazilian economic, social-political or artistic education. In addition to the Odebrecht Historical Research Award - Clarival do Prado Valladares Award, which takes place within the sphere of Odebrecht S.A., different initiatives have been promoted by the Organization’s Businesses. One example is the Braskem Culture and Arts Award, organized by Braskem. The Odebrecht Cultural Editions are grouped together at the Odebrecht S.A. website into four main themes: Arts, Cities and Regions, History and Partnerships. Within Our Reach There are several opportunities to integrate Sustainability into your personal life. The Odebrecht Foundation has an example located in the Bahia Southern Lowlands of how the topic is the basis for promoting the development of both people and the region, aligning respect for the environment with the generation of work and income. Participating in one of its initiatives can be a way of contributing toward society. Among the institution’s different programs, you can do everything from using carbon credits to promote reforestation and generate income for farmers (Pratigi Neutral Carbon Project), to contributing toward programs supported by Tribute to the Future, which have already benefitted several families and youth from the Bahia Southern Lowlands.
