CONTEXT Promotion is important for a new product or an event.

Design Task  A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for their future events. The set must include a CD case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CD’s. Promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material .

Target Market The target audience for my product is aimed at teenagers 13-20, because older adults would not like the product because it’s based on younger adults. I’ll focus my product towards both genders as it makes it easier for me not to just generalise a certain design, however gender does matter as it helps design and choose what colours you should pick e.g. Pink for females because it is more of a female factor so you know who you’re aiming at so it relates to the target audience. I think the final and overall product can be bought around the Morpeth area and in school. The customers I am aiming for are in their teens and late teens, therefore their likes will probably be generalised onto what genre of music they listen to e.g. Punk and heavy metal where the fans wear black, to show their personalities and then you have people who listen to dance music and wear bright, neon clothing to show their personalities. The customer wants the product to appeal to them and be useful, the product I am designing the CD case and CD mustn’t break and the case should be accurate measurements and be able to protect the CD. My product is more suitable for the audience because I take into consideration of what my customer likes and dislikes whereas my competitors might just be considering about the actual product or the design instead of the customer. The cost of my CD will probably be around £5.00 or £10.00 so I think it is a reasonable price and may influence the customer to buy it.

Hi, my name is Rachel and I'm 14 years old and I live in Pegswood I love Greenday they’re my favourite band. I enjoy rock/punk music I am given £10 each week for music and to get CD’s I will be popping up on some slides

Customer Profile Hi, my name is Rachel and I am 14 years old, I live in Pegswood and I like punk, rock music. My favourite band of all time is Greenday I always buy CD’s with Greenday on them and I only buy quality products, so bad and poorly made products, will not do for me. What did I learn? On this page I learnt about the customer and what target audience I could aim for which would make it easier on me to make the product as I know what the customer likes and wants. This is an advantage as I know what the CD / packaging could look like due to their likes and dislikes.

I want to do a poster, it’ll be a good thing to make, because the poster will get the band more publicity and many students might want to go to a concert maybe, so the band will also get a profit out of it. I will definitely make sure my poster looks as realistic and professional as possible. I will also make a point of sales stand for the CD packaging and actual CD to be kept in so they are available for sale, this is a good idea as it saves space and is an organised way of selling.

The research plan is on posters, CD, CD packaging, colours, typography and tickets, I'll be using the internet for most of these researches, but some just on PowerPoint or Photoshop etc. I’ll be using various websites and Microsoft to be helping me plan for my CD packaging and design for the CD, the more information I have the better understanding I have of what my CD will be like.

What did I learn? I learnt about hand drawing my task analysis, and learnt skills like shading and accuracy with my work, it was also quite enjoyable to draw as not everything in this presentation is computer work, some work will be hand made throughout the presentation.

I like the way the task analysis has been layered out and the way it is clear and colourful. There is a lot of detail on the spider diagram this gives me an understanding of what her CD will be like.

Size- The size is 64cm X 90cm (25’’ x 35’’). The shape is rectangular and square making it easy to put anywhere. Function- It s for band publicity to advertise the band also the music. It does do it’s function properly because it’s function is to advertise the band and to be stuck on the wall or used for a memento of the band. No I think it has one function and that is to advertise the band for publicity and to inform you about dates. Materials- The product is made of card, it doesn’t have numerous amounts of different materials for any certain areas. Printer ink is a raw material using industrial bulk chemicals to be made.

Aesthetics- The feel I get is a very serious and dark vibe that shows that it is very empathetic. The band name is the first thing I see on the poster because it has a very bright colour, compared to the bold background colour which is black, the name of the band is written in dark pink and very big letters, which to me makes the name stand out, also the background has a faded picture of their logo which advertises this. The actual band is on the poster but in black and white, no colour what so ever, except the dark pink glow around them this emphasises this and makes you think about how dark and rural the actual poster is, the scene in the poster looks very plain and rural and fits in with their genre of music which is punkrock and pop-punk type of music. Clients- I think the client will be targeted to teenagers and the product is mainly a very young kind of style for teenagers of this generation. Their music might influence the teens, so it makes the teens interested in the music. Cost- Since it is a poster it’ll probably be free in a magazine or you could buy it maybe around £1.50 or £3.00 possibly depends on what kind of picture it is and the size. Environment- I think the actually material of the poster is recyclable but isn’t made of recyclable paper, again the poster packaging might be in a magazine and magazines most likely have used recyclable paper, so yes I think the poster uses minimal packaging. Ergonomics- The product is easy to use because it is a piece of thin card, for advertising the band. The product suits the user because the card material is reliable and won’t rip easily or get damaged. The user most likely uses the product to hang on the wall for admiration. The poster is a appropriate size but sometimes posters can be very big and take up a lot of room, the weight is definitely appropriate because the card is light and not very heavy to carry, the shape is very simple a rectangular shape like most posters. Safety- Yes the poster does have sharp edges so there is a hazard of getting a paper cut. It could also be a hazard to children due to the relatively sharp and thin edges.

What did I learn? I learnt about materials used to make posters and what uses they have. I learnt about analysing features that matter in a poster to appeal to the audience so that it sells more. I know what I have to do, to make it bold and interesting so the poster stands out.

Aesthetics- The four fold CD case is very basic and isn't really complex but has a lot of good features to it as well like the opening of the product is very symmetrical and evenly made. The feel of the product is very colourful but dark because all the colours are quite neon colours so it’s bright , the case has very contrasting colours to it because of that. The visual impact is very pleasing to look at and catches your eye straight away. There are logo designs in this throughout the CD packaging which advertises the band successfully. There are no surface decoration. Client- I think the target market is aimed at teenagers as seeing the CD and packaging looks like a modern image on the front. The clients will probably be interested in how the front looks as that is the first thing they’ll see and influences them if they intend to buy it. Cost- I think the approximate price for this four fold CD is around £10.00 or more because it has 2 CD’s so that makes it worth more. I think it costs £40 or more to create this product because the making of the packaging and actual CD is to be made so the price is more significant. Yes I think if it was a more complicated CD design and packaging then it would’ve been more expensive due to the fact that it’d would've underwent more difficult processes to make and a lot more time to create as well. Environment- I think it is made from recyclable material as there isn’t minimal packaging used because the packaging of the CD is quite big and spaced out. The package can definitely be reused and maybe even used to hold different CD’s in there as well. Ergonomics- Yes the four fold CD case is very easy to use because it is easy to open and close, it just helps if the user is in a hurry and try's to open the packaging it will just fold open very easily without struggle. The client uses this product to listen to music and to store the actual product back inside of it. The product is an appropriate size because it can be stored anywhere easily and placed in small places, the weight is light but has got a little weight due to the CD’s, the shape is appropriate because it’s small and square which also makes it easy to store. Safety- It does have sharp edges but that isn't a big hazard in that matter, The only different component to this packaging is the actual CD holders that are made of hard plastic. Size- The size of the packaging is hard to tell but I think that it’s a standard CD package size so it is most likely suitable. Function- The function is to hold the CD and to advertise the band , it does do it’s job properly because it holds the CD in and advertises the band in a successful manner. Materials- The CD is made of card and plastic , these materials are very suitable as they’re light and small and very strong to hold the CD’s in. They will also make sure that the product is not damaged.

What did I learn? This page really helped me understand of how a CD package is made, because there is a lot of detail and accuracy needed to make the packaging right and realistic. I like how the layout is so simple to the eye, the spines are straight so to me, that packaging is very accurate and there will be no difficulty in opening and closing the packaging itself.

This is the outside of the package and has been coloured and has all the information and writing on it as well. This has the logo and actual picture of the food product all over the package making the audience aware of what it is and what is inside the package.

This is the inside of the package, it hasn’t been coloured what so ever, because the manufacturers want to save money by reserving the ink and also no one will really care or notice the inside of the package as the front and outside of the package is more important.

The glue tabs are made of card and the manufacturers use little glue due to the fact they want to save money and it helps reserve more glue.

Product Information

How the product is made?

This has vital information needed on the product, the company name, where it was made etc. It also tells you the ingredients which are very important in products that contain food items as the client may have reasons in which they may not be able to eat the product..

The product is made using a strong card because it is hard to tear/rip, but isn’t that strong that it won’t be opened easily, if you look on the right you can see the inside of the product is ripped and has been taped back together again.

This is a die cutter, industries use this to make a certain net for a product, by pulling the lever down, but you’ll have a die and a certain material underneath the presser, so you can have your net designed and made for you on that certain material.

The CD holding is made out of plastic and this is a good factor as it is secure and makes sure that the CD is safe from any damage or that it doesn't fall out and smash, so I want to do that for my product.

I like how the individual square have images on them as it makes the product look a bit better and make it look more complex than it is

This is a four fold CD case. This is a good amount as it means there’s more information on it because there is more space for you to put extra information on e.g. Band information.

What did I learn? I learnt the importance of how a product packaging is made, and what it should have on the front of the packaging, also how money could be saved to reserve resources e.g. Reduce Ink on the tabs and how much glue goes onto the tabs so there isn't too much, things such as these are critical.

What I learnt? I will use ideas and images from my moodboard to create a hand drawn and unique logo for my band, this is good as I can have some idea of what my band logo will look like. It also gives me a variety to choose from and I could join a mixture of images together to create a logo.

I

What did I learn? I learnt about how posters are set out and what kind of information I can have on, I learnt about ticket information and CD layouts. These gave me ideas of what my poster and ticket could look like, as you need a lot of information on them.

Primary Colours The primary colours are blue, red and yellow, you cannot form or mix to make them.

Complimentary Colours Complimentary colours are colours that are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel e.g. Purple-yellow or green- red, they look good on products because they go well together.

Secondary Colours These are the colours formed by mixing primary colours e.g. green, Orange and purple.

Tertiary Colours Theses colours are colours made by mixing primary and secondary colours, that's why hue is a colour meaning two word name e.g. yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green and yellow-green.

Red Hot, love, blood, anger, Passion, bold, religious and evil

Yellow Sun, Light, honour, fresh and intellectual

Green Peace, Recycle, Calm, serene, nature, sickness, nauseating and earth

The first font is called Vermin Vibes Roundhouse I liked the font because it stood out and to me went well with the name and colours in general, the colours is a Google theme I thought that it would be unique. The second font is called KG Faith Hope and Love I chose it because I thought it went well with the colours and is defined as it is black, the colour is the theme colour of my favourite band Blink 182 because I thought the colours interact well bold font and is quite a big font, the colours are green I like how the colour black goes well with this and makes the font stand out. This first font is thin and I thought it would go as it is the unique and different of what the name is called and it’s bold towards the colours.

Blue Sky, sea, calm , water, air, ice, clear, cold and chilled

Black Dark, night, sinister, mysterious, stylish and contemporary

This font is very worn out and has a rustic vibe towards that’s why I liked it, the colours in general contrast nicely together. This font is bold I like it because it had a Celtic style font and has a traditional and historic look to it and the colours are African, reggae style.

What did I learn? I learnt that colours do matter as they have to go well together. The fonts have a very a big effect on the product. The font and colours should go nicely together, and stand out. This will help you get a wider audience in your product.

It’s difficult to place on a object because of the sticky back.

LAMINATE

It makes your work look glossy and shiny also it protects the product from damage.

It could be on the packaging so that it protects the packaging from harm, or my poster.

Costs a lot to laminate, so there could be a minimum amount for laminating.

SMART MATERIAL

It’s a hologram for the ticket.

It’ll go on my ticket to add a more realistic and professional look.

It is very sticky so to place in the right place will be difficult.

ETHICAL- The term means your ethics well moral philosophy, that addresses you questions on your morality such as good or evil or right and injustice etc. I will make sure I have no ethical issues to offend anyone who might think have strong ethics against such things, because this could lose money for the product as not many people would buy it if it had offensive items on the product or packaging. ENVIRONMENTAL- This term means when negative aspects by human beings are regarded to the environment that could harm the earth. It could be educational, socially etc. I will make sure that my packaging and product will be recyclable and reusable , so that it won’t harm the environment that much, also I might make my product and packaging from used materials so that the process of burning fuels is not used in this process. SUSTAINIBILITY- This term means a lot of things but this would be the main one it is the long term well being, which depends upon the natural world or natural resources. As I said before I will make sure to use as less fossil fuels as possible so that the world isn’t impacted badly on me making my product and packaging. FAIR TRADE- This means a fair payment of certain produces, often made with social and environmental consideration. I will do this by making sure my products are not harshly priced so the client doesn't want to buy it , thinking that it is too much, I will take into consideration on where the produce would be sold e.g. If the produce is sold in a poor area with people with not much money I will make sure it is fairly priced for them, whereas if the product is being sold in a high class community where people with a lot of money it’ll be priced so that the producer is profited. CARBON FOOTPRINT- This is when a certain amount of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by fossil fuels which is burned by a certain person or group. This is a big problem for the environment so I will try to use as little energy to make my product as possible so that my carbon footprint isn’t so big that it could harm the environment badly. GREEN DESIGNS- This is when designing a physical object built for the environment, on economical, social, ecological sustainability like sonar panels . This will help me with my product as it will give me ideas on how to not offend any one or anything so that the product has a lot of clients and is thought of as a professional product. RECYCLING- This is means when you convert waste materials into reusable materials . This might help me with my materials as I could use a reusable material to make my CD and packaging, so that it helps the environment but can be unique and different to the client which could interest other target markets. RECLAIMED MATERIALS- This is when a certain material has been used before on a building or project, which then reused for another project. This could help me as I want to have reused plastic for my CD packaging to make sure it is secure, I might use some reused card or paper for the poster and information inside the CD packaging and a old CD for my CD product. WASTAGE- This term means to discard any material that is no longer intended or used anymore. I don’t want to waste any materials or objects in my project as I don’t want any of the issues above to become a problem. This will also cause me to lose money on wasting materials I bought with a lot of money. What did I learn? - I learnt that to make a product, there could be a lot of issues that could offend the clients. To make the product you need, to take a lot of precautions and consideration in if your product affects anything or anyone, I will take into these into consideration and add some of these logos on the back of my packaging.

SAFETY

ISSUES

The corners of the CD packaging will be softened so it is not a hazard to little children also there won’t be any small pieces so there is no choking hazard either. There will be labels on the packaging warning you for flammability. There will be symbols to show information about the product.

There aren't any cultural, social, or copyright issues, but there might be when I have finished my project as people might not agree with the name, logo type of genre etc.

ENVIROMENTAL ISSUES The product could impact the environment because getting the paper involves cutting down a lot of trees therefore using a lot of machines giving off greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, so that could be a problem for the making of the packaging, But It is reusable and recyclable. It could be used in the car , at home anywhere with a CD player really. It is suitable for any season as it isn't a seasonal genre of songs it’s a mixture.

AESTHETICS The product will look very professional and well presented as to me presentation is a very important key. The colour I am not really sure but I will soon decide what colours will go well with my band name, logo etc. The target market is aimed at teenagers as my band genre is punk/rock, so I don’t really think that any older generation would enjoy that sort of music as it’s very loud.

TIMESCALE No we don't have a time limit on when the production of the CD and the CD packaging. No deadlines either. It will be produced in stages, first plan the design, then choose colours, size etc and then start actually making the product.

COST It won’t cost that much because for our target market it’ll be around £10-£15 maximum to make the product and to sell the product it’ll be £11.99 or £14.99 minimum. The value is quite good for the product so it is worth quite a lot. The cost is suitable because it is in the money range for the teenagers as it is a fair price for the product and it is cheaper than what it took to make the product.

MATERIALS The material will be strong, it’ll be made out of white card using grey card to support it, as I want my CD to be in a secure area and not to break or be damaged.

INSTRUCTIONS

SIZE AND WEIGHT The product will medium but not be very big just big enough to hold the CD. It will suit the target market as it is small and easy to carry around and store as well.

FUNCTIONS The product will be a CD so it will used to listen to music, the CD packaging will be used to keep the CD secure and safe from any damage. It will do it’s job well as hopefully it will be strong and maybe waterproof. The packaging will be successful because of the material it’s made out of. The packaging has many functions as it has to secure the product, so it helps to be stored etc. The actual CD only has one function and that is to listen to the music on it.

The only instructions I will put is how to open the actual packaging if anyone has any difficulties opening it. There might be some sheets inside because if anyone wants to know about the band and what songs will be on the CD, but the list of songs will be on the back of the CD as well.

ERGONOMICS The shape of my product will be square. It will interact with the people because it is easy to store and the size of the packaging and the actual product will be small and easy to see and use.

What did I learn? I learnt that to make a product successful , it has to go through a lot of adjustments, and every detail matters, I enjoyed this slide because It helped me get ideas for my product.

I drew this , because it goes with my band theme as my genre of music is punk rock, I really like this idea so I know I will develop it further, and maybe it’ll be my logo for my band.

The original picture did have the picture of the whole guitar, but I thought it looked better just half the picture. I don’t really like this drawing as it is very simple so I might not develop this any further.

I liked how this had a dark, urban feel to the picture I thought that it had a lot detail in the picture but I had a tough time drawing the wings because the feathers have a lot of detail so I probably wont use this as my logo.

I liked how interesting and creative it was so I decided to use it as one of my logo ideas I also added a feature of my own because I thought it looked plain so I decided to add ribbons onto it.

I really liked the picture of cassettes, I like how it’s a vintage part of music , it is really easy to draw but it looked simple to me so I added the tape coming out to add a different affect. I will be developing this idea.

This didn't really take much work to draw I liked how simple it was and I knew you could draw this quickly and easily, if you wanted I could develop this further.

What did I learn? This page helped me decide what type of logo I would want to go with my band, this is because it showed me what colours or font I could use for my final idea I will choose three I liked best and develop them further for a better idea. It also helped me discover which ones stood out to me the most. I also hand drew the arrows so that I could add a personalised part in my presentation.

1. I hand drew this, using a image I found on the internet of a punk rock hand , I scanned it into Photoshop. You will see it on my mood board. I added a handwritten font to make it look natural.

2. I developed this further on Photoshop, I did this by blending a lot of layers of pictures together and changed the opacity to suit the hand. I added a font called impact label to make the name stand out.

3. I used my mood board and placed it over the top of my hand logo I changed the opacity and used the eraser to get the outline. I made the text look like it is curved around the logo to add a 3D effect.

4. I developed this on Photoshop by adding a jigsaw image I got off the internet and blended and adjusted it to fit into my logo design. I added my band name and placed the name in a diagonal side so it is a slanted look.

5. I just developed the same picture above and added a black and white effect , I then added a bold font and placed them in different positions to show a almost square look to the logo.

6. I got a image from Google of paint splattered and then blended into the outline the actual hand. I then got a font that was eroded and changed the colour of the text so I can make the words stand out I the curved the second part of my band name to make it look like it’s spiralling around the finger.

What did I learn? This page helped me by letting me see how the finished product would look like when it is done, instead of having a vague idea of what it will look like. Doing this shows that this is my own hand drawn ideas to me this shows something about me, which I have come up with and not taken something or someone else's ideas.

4. I got a picture from my mood board and placed the cassettes of the outline of the cassettes and then added a comic font to blend in.

1. I hand drew this cassette off my mood board and then I scanned it on Photoshop. I added a font so it looked as though I wrote it.

5. It is similar to idea 4 but I think it is more colourful and creative, I also added a comic font but it is different and added different colours.

2. I added a graffiti background and brightened the contrast and highlights, then I added a silhouette of a girl listening to music. I added a colourful graffiti font to let it connect with the background. 3. This took a lot of time as I had to make my lines accurate and had many shapes and layers, I blended and changed the opacity of all of all of them so they went with my black and white theme for this logo, I then added a bold font and changed it to white so it is clear to read.

6. I made sure my shapes were accurate and then I added a skyline of a city silhouette, to add something unique I added a space picture of the galaxy so it is something different.

What did I learn? This page helped me by letting me see how the finished product would look like when it is done, instead of having a vague idea of what it will look like. Doing this shows that this is my own hand drawn ideas to me this shows something about me, which I have come up with and not taken something or someone else's ideas.

4. I added a image of brambled thorns, I adjusted the image by increasing the contrast, the other image of roses and thorns I also adjusted by increasing the brightness to it. I then got a font, and made the brambles look as though they’re going over the name so it adds a 3D effect.

1. I hand drew this, it was an image on my mood board, I then added a curly font, so to blend it in I curved it to make it look like the butterfly’s antennas.

2. I added a image from Google of lightning , then made sure it fitted the outline of the butterfly , I then added a space theme font to make it stand out and then changed some of the letters colours so that it could be seen.

5. I developed this a little bit further from the fourth design but just changed the font colour, to a maroon and red colour so it stood out.

3. I used the gradient tool for this idea I think it’s different to all the others because I didn't use an image to blend into the outline, I drew some patterns of leaves into it using the colours on it, blue, white and black. I added a vintage font then duplicated it 3 times so it had a cool 3D effect as if its coming up towards you.

6. I added a black background and individually added the rough dots to add a glittery effect but then I magic erased some to add that eroded texture. I got the colour inspiration from idea 3 but developed it further.

What did I learn? This page helped me by letting me see how the finished product would look like when it is done, instead of having a vague idea of what it will look like. Doing this shows that this is my own hand drawn ideas to me this shows something about me, which I have come up with and not taken something or someone else's ideas.

Idea 4 scored the highest, as I think it has a very retro and rustic sort of look to it, and I also thought that idea 4 was the best one and could be the future logo, as you can see this logo was peer assessed so they also thought that idea 4 should be the logo. Idea 2 got the lowest I think it got the lowest marks only because its very simple , but it wasn’t because whilst I was developing this logo it took a while as there were many layers and images blended to form that certain shape, but because it s so simple in design that I gave it low scores because colour wise it was pretty simple and looked a bit dull. I didn't really think that idea 5 was a very complicated idea to come up with but I could see it as a logo and it seems to connect with my band name ‘enhancement overload’ because its more of a electronic and techno genre of music, but overall I think I will choose idea 4 or 1 as I like both but I don't see the rest being any of my logos.

Point of sales stand

A POS stand is to promote and hold the product at the same time. It is to attract the attention of the customer so they feel interested in the product. It needs to be stable and strong enough to hold the product, the product name, and producers name as well. It should have the graphic logo design and it should stand out so it is advertising the product.

What did I learn? This page helped me decide what main information is needed on all individual products so i can have a clear understanding about how i can make my overall products successful in achieving all of these points into my own product. (I drew the arrow and enhanced it)

This is a basic 4 fold package that was template on 2D design it isn't very complex but all my net designs are based on this net but developed to look and be more complex, this was a ‘outline’ f how my net would look.

This is my favourite design, so it will most likely become my final design, as it is based on the basic net but two extra folds are added and i would cut the shapes out freehand with a scalpel as it adds a unique effect to the design.

I’ve decided to move both CD’s here due to the fact the folds are where the CD’s was.

I hand drew the arrows to add my own work into it rather than computer based images.

This is an isometric drawing of one of my ideas, I think this is a good skill to have as I can see a image in a certain angle and draw it. Its aids you in how the product will be positioned .

What did I learn? This page helped me with my drawing skills, and helped me learn how to design nets and develop them further. This page is contrasting to the others as it is all hand drawn elements, except the basic net which was created on 2D design.

This is my favourite design out of all of them because its unique to the basic design. I think the design is complex which adds a more professional look which will capture attention and enhance my work. This is how the CD packaging looks when it is folded out. This is the CD package folded out but placed in a certain angle to show you how my CD package is unique to others I cut out shapes in my fold to give it a unique look, I will most likely add card in between so it is still strong as the disadvantage is that it becomes weak when I do. This is the CD package when it closed, the reason it looks as though it bends is because I used white card to display and cut my design out on. I think it was useful doing my design on white card as it made the template strong, whereas my first try was with ordinary paper.

This is my actual CD packaging, the material I used for my final CD packaging was white paper where my design was printed on, I had concerns as I thought that it wouldn’t be stable but I added strong white card on the spines, and actual squares, it helped make my packaging look more professional and strong so that it would not damage easily. I will cut the shapes on my two extra folds free hand so it looks more complex, I wanted my product to have a certain aspect which stood out from the rest.

What did I learn? This page helped me learn how to understand how the design and size affects the function of the product. Doing a example of what my product could look like, helped me have a certain goal of what the final product could be, overall I did choose that design for my main product as I liked the shapes in the two folds as it makes it look distinctive.

POSTER

FLYER: FRONT

FLYER: BACK

I got the dimensions for a standard poster size. As you can see I got a standard patterned background and thought that I needed something that fitted my genre of music (dance) so I thought I could develop it by adding a retro cassette player at the top, I adjusted the angle to give it a more complex look. As any poster I had sponsors, tour name, dates and the band name. At the very end I thought it looked a bit dark, so I added a red tint to brighten it, I think it made the poster look more rustic. I also got the dimensions for the flyer, just a standard A5 size, The flyer was more complicated than the poster as I had to design a back as well. The flyer followed the design of my poster as it had to be a constant flow through it, On every basic flyer I added the band name, same sponsors from the poster again for consistency, the event venue, price, date and time. The whole point of a flyer is to promote an exclusive event, a one time event, not like the poster. I decided to hold my event at Newcastle University, for students they have to bring their student ID to enter the event, I like the choice I made as it seems realistic and appropriate for the audience I’m aiming my products at.

What did I learn? This page helped me learn what information is needed on a poster and flyer. I also understood the function of a poster and flyer which helped me decide what would go on the two products to make sure it is realistic and professional.

TICKET: FRONT

The ticket took me a long time to complete as there was a lot of layers for the ticket, I set it out like a basic ticket and measured out a real ticket to get my size. The ticket is important as it has all the details to the event, there are two types of tickets you can get, standing and seating. My ticket is standing as many tickets usually are. The ticket has the venue at the top and bottom so I added my venue which is O2 academy. I will have a modern material on my ticket it’s a hologram it’ll be placed on the right side of the ticket, he function of the hologram is to make sure the ticket isn't fake which will help my ticket look even more professional.

TICKET: BACK

This was my front ticket but I erased the information to keep the design, I added a map of the event venue for the buyer of the ticket so that they are aware of their location. I wrote the terms and conditions and added the sponsors from my main poster. I had to create a separate side to the ticket with a dotted line that’s for the ticket holder to give to the person who will check it, and the other side can be kept as a memento even.

What did I learn? Hologram for my ticket, this makes my work look more professional. Holograms are used so the ticket is genuine, helps recognise if its fake.

This page helped me learn how to understand a function of a ticket, I also made sure I kept a constant theme throughout the whole project. This page shows how my products have developed stages.

POINT OF SALES STAND/ POUCH

The function of a point of sales stand is to advertise the product and hold it securely. My point of sales stand is a standard A4 size, I duplicated the band name and faded it making it looked embossed and a shadow effect at the same time. I used grass shapes, various sizes at the bottom of the point of sales stand to develop the point of sales stand a bit more. This is the pouch in which the case will sit in, this wasn’t very difficult at all, as I just cut the bottom off the point f sales stand to make sure it was accurate and that there was no measurements off.

CD 1 This is my CD as you can see we were already given a template for the outline. All I had to do was add my background design on, and add the words CD 1 in a different font to develop it slightly. I also added the logos ‘EMI and DISC’ on there for an authentic CD look.

CD 2

What did I learn? This is exactly the same as my first CD but it is edited to be red.

This page helped me learn how the slightest features affect the looks of the product, I have also learnt the functions of what a pint of sales stand does for the product and how it develops the products further.

View from the Outside

This design is based around the theme of all my other packages, its 6 fold CD packaging, I made it fold this many times to develop it from the first basic 4 fold template we received in the first place. I designed it to be red at first but decided to have black my first design in it as well, it helps make the text stand out mope clearly. The list of songs on my album took a while as various letters would not show up against the background so I added a faded vignette square box to make sure others could read it clearly. The two different colours in the packaging help know where the folds are in my packaging, which helps make my make easier. I wrote the album name, band name and band logo across the spine for a more authentic look . My band name and logo is everywhere on the packaging except the two folds that shapes will be cut in.

View from the Inside

This is the inside of my CD packaging. Its quite basic but the inside of a packaging always is so no attention is taken away from the outside, I kept the same design as my outside but I flipped it horizontally to make sure it was accurate when it would be printed. I got my band name and duplicated each of the words three times and rotated it at an angle so that It would create the effect that it was coming from and off the packaging. I also added the grass shapes again making them various sizes and doing the same effect with the text. I put my band logo in the centre of the packaging and faded it so that it blended in with the background but was still noticeable.

What did I learn? Cut out freehand using a craft knife

This page helped me learn about how sizes and angles can develop it further. I also learnt the function of a CD packaging and what effect it has on the buyers decisions. (I hand drew the dotted arrow)

CAD- Computer Aided Design CAM- Computer Aided Manufacture

Vinyl Vinyl is not a natural substance it is synthetically man made , it’s a plastic made from ethylene, with a clear, shiny facing and adhesive backing attached to a paper liner, most commonly used as stickers. I will be using vinyl on my CD packaging, the shape of my background pattern, its height is 7.5 mm and the width is 8.5mm I measured it accurately on my actual CD packaging using a ruler, I think my vinyl will be red or black as it fits in with my colour theme. Vinyl will develop my work as it will emboss my packaging Embossing- Embossing refers to a method of pressing an image or text into paper or cardstock to create a three dimensional design examples of embossing are credit cards, car logos and perfume packaging at times. Smart Material A smart material responds to change in their environment such as temperature or light. Smart materials have designs that can have one or more properties, they can be changed by stress, temperature, moisture, pH and electric or magnetic fields. Modern Material Modern materials are developed new or improved processes, like 'man' made materials, objects that require human intervention, not naturally occurring changes. Modern materials are altered to perform a particular function. My modern material is a hologram sticker it will be going on my ticket to make it look authentic, examples of a hologram are cash notes.

Advantages to CADCAM • Accurate designs • You can save work • Consistent • Saves time – repetitive tasks carried out quickly • Produces large amounts Disadvantages to CADCAM • People would lose jobs • Have to be trained in using the software • If the computer breaks, no work can be done • If computer does break costs money and time to fix • To teach others how to use, this takes time and money

Plotter Cutter A plotter cutter is a piece of computer equipment usually used to create vinyl designs made on the computer. A plotter cutter is accurate and efficient as you can choose at what speed it should cut your design.

What did I learn? This page helped me learn about vinyl and how it can make my work look more professional and appealing. I also understand how a plotter cutter helps me save time in making my vinyl.

These are my final designs for my overall products, I have grouped (nesting/tessellation) them together. Advantages to nesting are that it saves money as they can all be printed together on the same [paper also saving you time and money on the paper as well. Nesting also has disadvantages as it takes time to group and nest all the designs together. I nested my designs to save money and paper so it would be easier for my designs to print but as it is a large scale of printing it does take time which does delay it a bit. As I did nest my designs together and saved space whilst doing so, it meant someone else's work could also be put onto the paper saving even more money and time to print.

What did I learn? This page helped me learn the advantages of nesting and how it can save a lot of time and money if you do nest everything together. I also got a chance to add some new hand drawn elements into my work.

YES Put glue tabs on the CD casing to hold the CD.

The measurements in my design have to maintained and exactly right as the whole product starts with measurements and accuracy. I used the computer to aid me in making sure the measurements are correct as I used the ruler tool on Photoshop and made sure the teacher checked my work and sizes of my products before the printing so there were no mistakes on what size the proportion would be printed on.

What did I learn? The arrows used for my quality control flow chart are hand drawn again adding more to the hand drawn elements in my coursework. This page helped me understand my final products were made and developed step by step.

Time

Print out final nest of designs.

High quality printer that can print on a large scale.

Good quality paper (large enough for all my designs to be printed) and ink.

The paper could cut you as it has sharp edges and thin sides.

Printing is good quality, there should be enough ink so that there is no chance of it running out.

15 minutes

Accurately cut out all my designs.

Sharp craft knife Cutting mat Metal ruler

The paper and ink is good quality.

Try not to cut yourself whilst cutting your design as the craft knife has a sharp blade, to avoid getting hurt use a metal ruler and place your fingers in the ridge which will avoid you from getting cut.

Make sure the measurements are accurate or else your make may look unprofessional and you could lose marks.

What did I learn? This page helped me see all the phases of the making process I went through to reach the final outcome of my product.

CUSTOMER PROFILE: My customer likes punk and rock but she also told me that she likes dance music so I adjusted my product so that it appealed to her, it looks like a punk ,rock appearance but the name and genre is dance which in my opinion fits in perfectly.

DESIGN BRIEF: This is the initial task we were given to carry out and I have fulfilled it as it says I must create publicity for the band and I have designed and made a poster, flyer, POS, ticket , CD packaging, CD. I have achieved all the aspects needed and aimed to have a high standard of products which I have achieved. My CD package has 6 folds which is more than the minimum amount needed which is 4, I have also added a modern material in my product which is a hologram which was placed in a suitable product which was the ticket to make it look more professional and defined.

I placed the product in a geographical area where my customer would find most suitable as she lives in the Northumberland area and I am selling my product there.

There is a constant theme going through my work and you can see the diversity in my work which helps make it stand out to the rest which’ll intrigue the audience Into buying it. I used popular sponsors to attract young people to be interested in buying my product as they will advertise my product to their target audience as well.

What did I learn? This page helped me assess my work in an extended way so I can look more in depth into what my customer and certain target audience may be looking for within my products.

There are no issues within my products.

My products are made from recyclable materials so they can be reused again.

There are no safety issues that I am aware of as all my products won’t cause any injury or damage to any of the customers.

My aesthetics are dark colours to represent the sort of genre my customer likes as she likes punk, rock however I added a maroon colour to brighten it so that it appeals to others as well, my products all have the same theme running through all of it which helps others easily identify the fact they are a package.

The materials I used is strong, which helps make my product become more stable and makes sure my product doesn’t get damaged.

The timescale we were given was very long and I think we received full amounts of time to complete the task to our best ability.

I didn’t put any instructions on how to open the packaging as its quite straight forward but I did put the songs ,list on the back to inform the buyers to what they could listen to.

The cost of the materials were very limited as not much was spent as we used very little and wasted minimal amounts, we used computer software's such as Photoshop. The only thing that cost money was the printing.

The size and measurements of the CD packaging is accurate and precise, so everything fits properly and straight when closed or opened.

My ergonomics have worked out fine as the packaging size is an appropriate and is suitable for the target audience to carry or store. The function of my product except my CD packaging does what I required it to do, they publicise my band and help get more interested in my products. My CD packaging also follows out its function as it protects my actual CD and advertises as well.

What did I learn? This page helped me understand how to evaluate my work to make sure it is suitable for purchase and that no customers have any problems with my products.

My Opinion: I think my product is good but I’m not really happy with the make results as some parts of my make looks unprofessional to me personally, however others don’t think that so I think overall the making process went okay.

I asked three people questions about my product, it helps me understand what my target audience might think of my product as my target audience is teens.

1st Opinion: Matthew Saul QUESTION 1. Do you think I chose the right colour choice?

2. Do you think my font size is appropriate for my product?

YES

NO

In my opinion this work relates perfectly for the target audience and is well made and produced. All the products have been made to a professional standard and each product has been adapted to a new individual great design. Also the colours work well and catch your eye, this theme has been carried out for each product which has made a consistent sleek design

2nd Opinion: Lauren Shields 3. Does my net look professional and complex?

4. Does my logo fit in with my overall design?

5. Does my product meet the requirements needed for my target audience? 6. Does my make reach a professional quality?

7. Are the materials I used suitable for my products?

8. Is there any improvements I need?

9. Do you think there is any safety issues?

10. Would you purchase my product?

I think that this work looks really professional and cool because it meets the target market and is really eye catching and detailed. Each of the products are to a high standard and look really good. I think the work overall is very professional so it works really well.

3rd Opinion: Chloe Laidlow I think that the PowerPoint is done with a lot of detail and is well laid out. I also think that the final products that she has made are very good and made to a high standard.

What did I learn? This page helped me understand what others think of my product as the opinions are from teens and that is the target audience I aimed for so it really gives me an insight on what people might actually think.

MODIFICATIONS If I could make my product again I think I would make sure that make was the best standard to me as in this project I think the make has left me down as some areas are a bit poor to me. The biggest thing I would like to improve in my design would be the colour of it as the printing quality changed the shade of the colour making it darker than it should which left it a brown colour instead of black and red, I think it would’ve improved the appearance of my products on a large scale as the quality of my products would’ve been to a higher standard making it more professional. I would’ve liked to have two sided paper as it would’ve most likely saved me a lot of time, as I wouldn’t of had to stick them together. I would’ve liked my poster to have been printed on glossy paper as it would have adjusted my appearance and quality as it would help get peoples attention as it would look like a realistic, genuine poster. I would’ve also liked my flyer to be laminated like my ticket to make it more professional so that it wouldn’t get damaged. The material used for half my products were very weak and I would’ve liked it to be stronger so that my products were more stable when handled.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION Commercial production means the manufacturing and designing of products on a larger scale to be sold commercially. I think my product could be commercially viable (could be sold to make a profit) I tried to make it look as professional as possible to be able to be sold, but the printing quality affected the appearance but I can’t change that, however advertisement could help articulate my products to others. My product is a one off product made to show people what products could be made like a draft of some sort. BATCH PRODUCED: Batch production is a technique used in manufacturing, in which the product is created stage by stage over different areas, and different batches of products are made. A job production (a one-off production) and continuous production (flow production). Batch production is used in places like bakeries, pharmaceuticals etc. MASS PRODUCTION: it involves manufacturing of large quantities of a product. Mass What did I learn? Production refers to creating large amounts of similar products efficiently. The arrows directing you to the photos are a hand drawn element.

This page helped me learn how if my product was to be sold on a large scale then what would be needed and intended for it to go through to that stage, I also understand that if I got the chance then how I would improve and modify my product to make it better.
