Target Market:
Design Brief: Context Promotion is important for a new product or an event.
Design task 5 A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for their future events. The set must include a CD Case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CDs. Promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material.
On this slide I have learnt what potential customers will look for in the product and the standard the product needs to be. Also what the certain audiences expect from a product within the genre of music, this will help me to understand what appeals to the customers and their likes and dislikes within different products, so I can adapt mine around their needs.
The type of person who would be my typical customer would be someone around 14-30 years old because that is the kind of target age for my product, they also would like similar music to Customer Profile: my product/genre so it would appeal to them. Their gender Hi I’m Brenda, I’m 15 doesn't matter for this kind of music, both young women and men years old, I live in would like it. Most potential customers would live in main places Morpeth , I regularly go like the UK and USA this is where the music genre was invented, to buy CD’s mainly punk rock music, my favourite so it’s the most popular there. The kind of people who listen to band is blink 182. I go to this music, will want to be in a band or be very interested in the musical industry. The general likes for customers will be musical King School. I go to concerts on a monthly instruments, the general dislikes will be maybe different types of basis to see my favourite music like pop. From my product typical customers would want bands with my friends, I something that would appeal to them, so they would buy it and like band merchandise really like the music. My product will be suitable for potential such as posters and customers because it will be unique and eye catching, so it will bracelets. appeal to a range of customers. The design for my product will have to fit in with the genre and style of the music, to get a I will be appearing greater number of customers. Before the customers actually throughout this purchase this product they will consider the price, because it will PowerPoint to give have to be fair to compete with things like downloading from my comments on iTunes and other bands. Also they will look at the quality of the this project. CD design, and whether it matches what they are looking for. Customers look at value for money, and the high quality of this product, Customers will find out about this product from posters, internet advertising or maybe it could have been recommended to them. Other customers have said that they really liked the style and music of this product, because it appeals and matches the genre of music. To occasional customers the price will matter if they have just recently started listening to that genre of music, but to the majority of customers the product and music will be more important. Contact can be made with potential customers through advertising and in music magazines they might buy.
I plan to analyse different products such as other band publicity posters and CD designs to get a good idea on the other successful bands products to improve my designs and to find out more on the products like how they are made and put together e.g. The disassembly, so my product can be made professionally. Also I am going to design a mood board and image board to give my ideas for logos, colours, fonts and the design, this will help me make by product as good as possible.
On this slide I learnt how to get bands publicised and the techniques used to get customers e.g. merchandise. This also helped me plan what parts of my work I am going to do next on my project so I can start thinking about the content.
I learnt about the different aspects of what makes a good product and everything that needs to be considered in the making of it, so I can understand what has been done and thought of to get this high quality and professional result.
Aesthetics: The colours on this poster really stand out, and make it eye catching, the font is very bold to make it even more noticeable, the band name is also their logo as well, so that is used in their other products. There is only one picture on the poster that makes it quite simple, the heart grenade is also on some of their other albums and posters like American idiot so people will recognise it, the red on the poster blends in with the background, to make everything in the poster match the genre. Client: The target market for this poster and the band Green Day would be about 13 to 40 year olds, because around that ages is when you would be most interested in that genre of music and the band or other bands like them, also in musical instruments. Cost: The design of this poster is quite simple so it will be less expensive to make than a one with lots of pictures and writing on, the poster is simple but it still looks professionally designed and printed, increasing the cost. Environment: This poster can be made from recycled materials or recycled when it is no longer needed to conserve resources or the product can be re used for other Green Day events for the future. It is better for the environment because less ink would have had to be used since there is only a few colours and a simple design. Ergonomics: The product is used to tell Green Day fans about things like tickets for concerts, websites for more information or new CDs released by the band, so it gets the band more customers, so this is a form of advertisement. It is suited for this by it’s size so the writing can be big and bold so people can easily see it also for the information it contains. Safety: This product is very safe, because it made from safe materials such as card or specialised printing paper, so it isn't a safety issue apart from you could get a paper cut. Also the ink used will not be toxic to make this product as safe as possible to reduce potential risks. Size: The size of the product is very appropriate for it’s use because it is big enough to catch peoples attention and to stand out from other posters like it, and the main information the people will immediately notice is the writing in bold, the size of the poster allows this. So the relevant information gets across. Function: This poster informs customers of concert days ,ticket sales and the songs (from 21st century breakdown) also it gives Green Day’s website for further information, and the number for another website. The poster is an advertisement to get potential customers interested and to inform fans of Green Day about the concert. Materials: The poster is made from card- specialised for printing so it is more durable than paper, other posters can also be made from recycled materials like cardboard. This poster has been screen printed, the printer ink is a material as well because that is the colour on the poster.
I learnt how a product reflects the bands image, using the colours and designs. I also learnt that the product involves many different steps in the making of it, so every aspect needs to be considered, to achieve a product that will attract customers, fit in with the genre also to look professional.
Aesthetics: The shades of green with black colours blend in with each other, and work well on the front of this CD cover because they go with the setting- it is very surreal, the green and the black represent the night sky. The font on this design suits the surreal look of the cover, also the colours match the ones inside the houses, so the colours on here are limited but they are different shades of one colour, so they all combine together. The song lyrics written on the CD package is in the same style font as the name of the band and album, the lyrics are in white so they stand out against the black and green but still fit in with the theme. The name of the band (The Blackout) also matches with the designs on the front cover with it being set at night, and the different colour combinations. Client: The people who would buy this product would be teenagers to around 40 year olds. They would have a varied range of music involving other bands to understand the Blackout and the music (lyrics), so the themes and designs associated with the punk rock genre. Cost: The selling price for this product is around £10 in stores and on places like Amazon. I think this product will be expensive to make because of the design like the different shades of colours, because the design is quite complicated so that will increase the making costs since there will be more steps involved to get that design. Also the cost depends on how high the demand is for the product, if there is a higher demand more will have to be made. Environment: This product could be made from recycled materials to reduce making costs also to have a better impact on the environment, If someone purchased this product and then later on if they have finished with it they could donate or sell it back to places like that’s entertainment and amazon so they re sell it again so that is also better for the environment instead of more copies having to be made. Ergonomics: This product is easy to use, due to the appropriate size and shape this suits the user because it contains the relevant information that potential customers need to know like the band and album name, also the songs it contains. It is useful since it folds out to access the CD and the information, and then it folds back again so it is easy to carry and use. Safety: There is no safety issues about this product, it has been made so that it is suited for its purpose, so that safety isn't a problem excerpt the risk of paper cuts. Size: This product has the correct size for its uses because it is big enough so you can see the design and writing clearly on the case and to fit the CD inside, but it isn’t too big either so that storage in shops or homes could be a problem , also if it was bigger the production costs would increase and the selling costs so it would get too expensive for customers/ fans. Function: The packaging and the case of this product is to prevent damage to the CD it contains, so that it will be good quality for the customers, the CD is designed to carry the bands music for fans and potential customers of this product, It is adapted to it’s job. Materials: This product would be made from strong card, with a form of lamination on top to protect it so it lasts longer and is more suited to its purpose, It is fixed together with glue, also the ink used for the design would be a form of material used for the product. The specialised materials creates a good quality product.
This shows the front side of the products net, the front is only printed on the product to cover-the part customers see, so at the part where it is glued and on the bottom isn't printed because it doesn't need to be, it would cost a lot more money and ink if those parts were printed which would be unnecessary since the customers don’t see that part, the ink goes a little more than it needs to because if the packaging was built up wrong the ink would still line up so it wouldn’t look unprofessional. The tabs and the amount of glue are the minimal amount because the company doesn't want to waste money on glue and tabs that are not needed they just make the sufficient amount so the product will stay held together. This is the inside of the product net, it isn't printed like the front to save money because customers don't see that side and if millions of these are being made it would be a massive waste of ink and the companies money, also this way is better on the environment since the design hasn't been printed on this side, this has a better economic value.
I learnt that in the making of the net for the product , money needs to be considered from the amount of ink and glue used, so nothing gets wasted it only uses a necessary amount, this information will help me with my product so I can save on materials and money.
This is the final design of the net when it has been folded and glued together, this is what the product goes in. This box has a window cut from it and that is so you can see the product before you buy it so you can get a better idea on what you are purchasing. It also saves the card and ink that would have been used if it was just a normal box without the window cut from it. This shows the inside of a four fold CD, the design is quite simple with the black background and the different colour lines on it this would have been less expensive compared to a product that had a very complex design because more tools and ink would have been used in the making of a complicated design. The size of this product is good because it only uses what it needs to fit the CD’s in and the information booklet, so this saves on materials and money and no extra card is wasted.
This is the die cutter which is used for cutting out the net design for products, this is a very precise and professional way of doing this because it slices through materials so they all look the same and there are hardly any faults.
Doing this moodboard I learnt the types of pictures and colour patterns that work well within this, so it matches with the genre. Also font styles and logos from punk rock bands will help me design my own, so I know what type to make it and possible images to be included.
I like the images used because they are about the same genre of music, so they all work well together.
Doing this image board helped me look at the designs, logos and album covers of other bands . This gave me a good idea on other existing products also on things like the wristbands. All of this will help me improve my product, because the product design reflects the bands image with the techniques used.

Primary Colours: The primary colours are red, blue and yellow, they cannot be made from mixing any other colours. The primary colours are the three main colours, they make all of the secondary colours. On this slide I learnt what different colours can mean and the effect they have on a product. I also learnt what colours go well with styles of typography, this will help me design my logo and font so I know what will work well together and make the product successful to reflect the genre.
With this typography I chose colours that would blend in with the name and fonts. The name is Dark Flame so I chose shades of red, orange and brown ( dark colours) this represents the flame. For the darkness I used shades of black and purple. Within this I also used some bright colours to make it stand out. The style of typography fits the genre because it is a punk rock style.
Materials & Tools
Advantages
Disadvantages
Where in my product?
Health and Safety
Vinyl
It enhances the quality of the product to make it more appealing and it comes in a range of and colours.
Vinyl can be quite expensive, also it is a delicate material so it could be easily damaged.
I could use Vinyl for the small aspects of my product e.g. the logo so it stands out and makes my product look professional.
When you are cutting the vinyl out you will have to be carful so you don’t cut yourself.
Grey Card
Grey card has a lot more strength, and it lasts longer than normal paper, so it will promote the product.
Grey card doesn't look as nice as white card, also using card can harm the environment.
This could be used to make the CD cover because it is able to protect the product, also for the poster, tickets.
The only safety issue is that a paper cut could be caused.
Phosphorescent
This is an example of a smart material which would make my product attractive and unique.
Since this is a smart material it will be expensive and quite hard to manufacture.
This material could be used for a very small part of my logo or around the bands name on the product.
If you have to cut this material out, you could hurt yourself while cutting.
Laminate
This protects the product by making it durable, and waterproof. It will also be more appealing.
The laminate doesn't stay there permanently it can peel off so that can damage the product. Also you will need to purchase a laminator.
Band publicity aspects such as posters, flyers and tickets to make them last longer so it is waterproof.
You could get a paper cut and the laminator can get very hot if used often.
Cutting mat
Surfaces don’t get damaged, and the cutting tools used are less likely to slip because of materials it is made from.
There is no real disadvantages to this product apart from if ordering a lot it will become quite expensive.
I would use this cutting mat when I am cutting the card CD cover, or the logo out of materials e.g. vinyl.
When you are cutting objects, there is a possibility that you could get cut.
Craft knife
This gets the material you are cutting very accurate e.g. in strait lines, and this tool is very good for scoring.
These can be quite hard to use and control, so it can be difficult to cut or score a material if you don’t know how to use the craft knife effectively.
I will be using this to cut and score my CD cover also to cut materials out for logo and design e.g. vinyl.
When cutting materials this tool could easily cut you, or the tools itself could get damaged.
Glue stick
A glue stick is much easier to use than a glue gun, when you use this it looks neater as well, also glue sticks are cheaper.
This glue is weaker than glue guns, so it may not last as long also you can use this type of glue to stick big, heavy materials together.
I will be using this to assemble my CD cover together and to stick on other materials on my product.
This could be an issue if you inhale the solvent fumes from the glue.
Safety ruler
This is designed so you don’t get cut while using craft knives, so it is much safer. Also it’s stronger and more durable than a normal ruler.
The way the ruler is designed it could become quite hard to see the measurements.
I will use this to measure the CD cover when I cut it out, this will also help with the craft knife and when I cut out my other designs.
There is no health and safety issues with this tool, it was designed for safety.
Scissors
This is a quite quick way of cutting something out, e.g. rough designs to save time. Also they are fairly cheap.
When you are cutting out this doesn't cut in a strait line so it isn't accurate enough.
I will use this to cut out rough plans and copies of my product and some materials.
You could cut yourself with the scissors, or harm others.
Computer/ Software
The computer and software allows you to complete the work for your PowerPoint and mood board and other graphical tasks.
If you haven't got the software or a computer, then it will be very expensive.
I will use the computer and PowerPoint to do my presentation, also for my mood board on Photoshop.
The computer can damage your eye sight if you are working for a while.
On this slide I learnt about the different tools I will have to use and what I will use them for also the issues involved, this will help me with the later stages of my product like designing my logo and CD cover, to promote my product.
A hologram will also be used on my ticket, to make it more realistic to stop forgery, however they are expensive.
Ethical: Ethical issues can offend certain people, society's or countries. So if a CD goes on sale worldwide you have to make sure no aspects of the product will raise any ethical issues, such as symbols, pictures or words within the product. In the product there cant be any racist material, or anything that would offend religious groups or organisations, and even material that would offend the general public.
Fair Trade: Fair Trade aims to help developing countries have better trading standards and to promote sustainability. This helps workers who produce goods like fruits, cotton, sugar, coffee etc. to get paid a fair and good price for their work, this benefits the environment, the condition of the product and better living and working conditions for the workers which increases their work efficiency.
Environmental: Environmental issues are the materials used in the production of the product, such as the card- this uses resources. Also the machinery used to make this product will cause pollution and the use of energy. And the disposal of the waste products, this should be recycled so it is better for the environment so it can be made into other products. When I am making my product I will use the materials effectively so it cuts down the waste, and only uses what is necessary.
Sustainability: This means no lasting harm comes to people or the environment, it is the management of resources so you are making the resources last for the future e.g. if you cut trees down you plant more- this ensures that there will be plenty for the future. This benefits the environment, and the company who is using the resources also future generations. Green designs are sustainable because their designs are environmentally conscious (the built environment).
Carbon Footprint: The carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases produced by each person or company per day, these emissions should be kept quite low in the making of this product so it is better for environmental issues and the amount of energy used because the more energy you use the more expensive it will become, And the greater impact on the environment from pollutants.
Recycling:
This is waste materials that can be remade to have new uses and to make new products, this benefits the environment rather than making new materials. And you can make products out of re cycled materials, so you're not just recycling the waste you are reusing the materials also reclaimed materials where you use a product twice for a different uses. To save materials when I'm making my product I will only use what is needed, so use as little materials as possible.
Copyright: This slide helped me learn the issues If you were producing a worldwide product you would have to watch out for copyright this involved with making a product, so means you can’t use anyone else's ideas, so you have to think of your own however this is you know what needs to be good because it protects your designs form being used by others. considered. This will help me with the designing and production of my product so it can benefit everyone so I can take in the different aspects.
Aesthetics The product will contain dark colours like black, purple and red or colours that stand out on a dark background. The typography will be based on my colour theory so it matches. The images and logo will have a very unique design (very detailed), so it will attract peoples attention and promote the product.
Ergonomics
Materials
Instructions
My product will be made from various materials such as card, vinyl, phosphorescent and laminate. These materials are suitable because they look professional to get more sales, and they will be quite durable and waterproof because of the laminate.
There will be a booklet which fits in the CD cover, which contains the song lyrics, advertisement, other information, images and the front CD cover design. This will give customers extra information about the band.
There won’t be any sharp edges it will be comfortable to hold there won't be anything to cause a safety issue. The CD cover will be as small as it can be so it is able to fit the CD and the booklet inside but not waste materials. On the CD cover there could be a parental advisory label on due to the lyric content.
Function
Cost
This products function is to store music so it can be sold, it makes it easier to access the music, store in shops and for customers to purchase. The CD’s case, design and materials are used to protect the product so it doesn't get damaged.
The materials used in the production will add to the cost also the machinery. In retail shops CDs normally cost £8-£12 since the band will be relatively new, the cost is value for money because the target market will be able to afford this and the CD could be cheaper than others of the same genre.
Size and Weight

Issues
The deadline for this project is December 2013. The lesson time is approximately 45 hours. The project is split into five sections to complete.
I will test this product by giving it to someone with similar music taste to see how this product compares with other successful CD’s, and the products standard. Also the feedback would help me to make any improvements.
In this product you have to make sure there is no material that could offend anyone. When I am designing this there can’t be any aspects that could be considered as copyright. And environmental issues such as recycling needs to be considered.
Durability The product construction will be high quality, so it lasts much longer. The materials used like the grey card, laminate and vinyl will be hard wearing to make it as durable as possible.
I learnt in the making of my product what is required to consider in each area to make it successful. Also the steps involved in achieving a good quality product that customers would respond well to and purchase.
Target Market The client for my product will be 14-30 year olds because people between them ages will be interested in music, and other bands like them.
The size of the CD cover will be quite small and a square shape. The cover will just be big enough to fit the CD and booklet inside. The overall weight of the CD, booklet and cover will be quite light which is convenient for the customers.
Safety
The product will be safe to use because there won’t be any sharp edges or loose parts, it will be designed to Environmental Issues avoid this. The materials will This product will consider the environment be smooth so they can’t by using a minimal amount of materials. In the production of this product I could use old cause a safety issue. This product is not flammable , materials, or recycled materials. The the only label which will need products packaging and cover will be to be on it is for the lyric recyclable, Also some materials within this content. product will be biodegradable.
There was lots of ways this logo could have been developed because of the design. For this logo I added black to parts of the clock, this is simple but the colours stand out, to look bold, this is effective.
I used the gradient to add the effect that the colours are getting lighter as it approaches the centre on the rose, this would be an easily remembered logo. The original design was simple but professional, It stood out.
On this slide I learnt how the logos designed have to fit in with the band name, the music genre, typography and colour association all to achieve a successful, professional product, Also a starting point into developing the logos effectively so it improves the quality of the overall product.
This logo relates very well to the bands name Dark Flame, So it could be adapted well: I changed the colours and added a burn effect so it fits in with the name.
On this logo the chequered design works well with the music genre, when I developed the logo I made it look bold and added a gradient this is simple but effective.
On this logo I added another gradient, the colours used relate well to the image this improves the appearance of the logo, this image also relates to the bands name.
This logo reflects the punk rock genre well. So the gradient tool looks effective because of the style and shape of this image.

2.
3.
These colours work well together and stand out- I like the turquoise colour, they also fit in with the colour patterns and typography.
4.
The red and black blend in with each other to make the white name look bold. The chequered pattern works well with the colours and image.
5.
The chequered pattern with the striped pattern improves this logo because these designs look good together, they contrast with stripes and checks so it is bold and eye catching.
On this slide I learnt that you have to choose colours and patterns that will work well with the actual image drawing and music style. All the different aspects like the colours, patterns, image and typography will have to result in a well designed logo.
This logo gradually goes from pink to purple, this is good because of the colour choices and the effect it has on the image- Blending.
6.
For this logo I added a rainbow I think the colour choices used as pattern background to the image, well as the pattern for this logo this varies the logo developments really reflect the image for the because this logo is very music genre (punk rock style), so it colourful, with a light effect. All of the development will match my final product. pages are good, but some designs are much better than others, like development 6 on this page.
1.
2.
I used dark grey colours, then the burn tool this gives the image a good effect. The colours, typography and design relates well to the image and genre.
4.
3.
I used a gradient coming from the centre of the clock, this looks effective because of the design and shape of this logo (circular).
The colours used in this logo relate well to the name because the colours used are dark and they relate to fire, this makes it good as a logo.
5.
On this I used two colours coming from the centre, with this logo I think having only a limited amount of colours enhance the image (blending). I learnt that for certain designs and types of logos you need to stay with specific colour choices, typography and patterns because that is what works best for that logos design and shape. You stay with certain choices because that gives the logo a good effect which will improve the quality.
The pattern I used is very effective for this logo because of the style and colours, it works well with this logo, It gives the clock an effectsurrealism.
6.
I added a black and white spiral to this logo, which fits in with the colour theme used, this also adds effects to the image e.g. 3D with contrasting colours.
2.
3.
1.
For this logo I just used black and white. For this type of logo I think It works well and enhances the image making it look bold.
4.
The colours used here blend in with each other, the added gradient makes them merge together, this logo will be easily remembered because of this. On this slide I learnt that you have to chose patterns and colours that will relate well to the genre of music and match with other previous designs and ideas to make it successful as a logo and overall product. I also learnt and developed new Photoshop skills.
The blue looks bright against the black, this improves the image giving it better quality to enhance the rose.
5.
The colours used in this image blend together very well to create a effective logo, the pattern works well with the actual rose drawing, to make a good quality logo, which is very unique.
I added a gradient to this rose, as it gets further away from the centre the red gets lighter, This is good for a logo because red is the natural/most common colour for roses.
6.
I added a blue pattern to the rose, since these colours are dark they make the band name stand out, these colours match each other, the blue has a light effect.

I learnt what aspects need to be considered in making a logo successful to get a high rating, so I know what logos I am likely to use in my final designs, This slide helped me to see what logos are the best in other peoples opinion to improve my designs.
Logo number 5 got voted the highest, I also think that it is the best because the pattern I chose relates well to the genre so it will look good on my final products, The colours in the pattern blend in well with each other to produce a good quality result, the pattern is also of a nebula in space this makes my work quite unique. The other logos got high scores as well, the designs and colours are good they also relate well to the theme of my work for my final designs but I think number 5 is the most effective as a successful logo as it was voted the highest when it got peer assessed.
My favourite logo is number 5 the rose because the design, colours and pattern are a very high quality, And it looks professional.

This net design rearranges the normal template design, it is still quite simple but it is effective since it can hold the two CD’s and the optional booklet inside, so it will be durable. This net can be made successfully, it will all fold together creating a CD front, back and spine.
This design is very basic, as the sides fold in to the centre (3 folds) there are no extra developments, all the necessary items fit into the net, if the quality when making this net are right it can be successful.
This net has been adapted and developed to make it more detailed: the two triangular flaps will fold up and be glued to create CD slots, Also a pocket is going to be made for the CD booklet, the triangle designs will add effect to the product. The spaces without anything on will contain a graphic design.
This is an advanced net since it contain lots of folds and the wave CD slotsThese will be difficult to construct on the computer and in the making stage. This design also has a booklet pocket for extra detail in creating a realistic product. There is space to add a design, to emphasise the band.
This design is also simple, however it doesn't fold at the centre, it folds at right hand spine, This is different to the other CD net designs, so this could promote the product. There is no CD booklet in this design, so it creates more room for graphic designs relating to the band.
On this slide I learnt all the aspects that need consideration when designing a net, such as difficulty to design and construct, the best use of materials, space, how the design will fold, and thinking about what the measurements will need to be for the net to work.
This design is smaller than the others, this means it will be more compact. The two flaps join together to make a square, but each design is a wave shape, this is designed to protect the booklet. Also slots are provided to keep the CD’s in place, there is no room for graphic designs on this net.
These two nets were constructed using a once point perspective, this gives different angles and dimensions for how you can view a design.
This net design is quite simple, it is not as complex as I would want my final design to be since it has no added developments or creativity e.g. flaps. The measurements were accurate this suggests it will be easy enough to make without any faults and it does fit all the required objects in such as 2 CD’s and an extra booklet. However this isn't developed enough so this net won’t be used in my final design.
This design has been rearranged differently from the standard design to adapt it further, However doing a model of this design made me realise that the position of the CD’s and booklet in this net wouldn’t work because there would be too many overlapping products with different thicknesses, this means that the spine measurements would be complicated, and the net would lack quality e.g. two flaps for one CD, it would be difficult to construct. On this page I learnt the importance of creating models in the designing process because you need to see how your designs will fit together and if they will work. Also this helps with knowing where to position things like logo’s and designs on the net.
This net model has been developed with wave shape CD slots and a CD booklet pocket, all of these modifications will enhance this net design, the way it folded means that it fit together well, But as I made this model I found out how difficult it was to cut out the wave design for the slots this means if I made this net there would be a greater risk of my work getting faults which would lower the quality.
I think this is my best net design because it has been adapted with the triangle flaps and a booklet, but no so much that it would be difficult to construct. This net design uses the same spines and folding techniques as the wave design net so this ensures the measurements will be suitable for it to fit together properly. The developments present in this net design makes it realistic and successful to promote this design, this makes it a good choice for my final design. For my modelling nets I constructed them from white card because it is more durable than paper, so it allows you to do this properly giving you a more realistic representation of what the final product will be like, Also you can develop design with less risk of it getting damaged since the card is stronger. This is good because the models give you an understanding whether or not the designs will work, or the measurements are correct and where you can position products and designs.
Tools used for modelling:
Safety mat, craft knife, safety ruler and glue.
This is my CD- disc 1, The CD template was already supplied I needed to make the design to go on it. I began by carrying out the background colour and the debris illustration, this ensures the same theme is placed throughout however each product differs in some way. Secondly I wrote in the relevant information such as the band name, the tour name and the number of the disc. Finally I added the logo, for my logo I created a effect behind it so it would blend in with my theme.
For my A4 poster I started by adding the grey/ black background, this starts off the space theme which is there throughout my project. I then got an image of a moon put it in the corner, to make the image more original I added my own effects such as inside and outside glows and changed the colour. After this I used the brush tool with various colours to create the debris around the moon, So I created most of this illustration myself. I added my band name and logo to the poster since this needs to be continued throughout my designs, For the band name I put a glow shadow effect in place so the white writing would blend in with the dark grey background. Since this is a poster I added specific aspects to make this look more realistic and professional, I added things like support acts, a tour name, tour dates and venues also sponsors such as glamour kills and the record company. I also made up a band website and gave a ticket hotline number for extra information this increases how realistic my poster is.
On this slide I learnt that all of the steps up to designing and making a product is important, It all leads to making the most successful product possible. Also continuing the same theme throughout designs is important so the product can be seen that they link for customers.
This is my CD- disc 2, I wanted my pattern to be continued throughout, so I had to make my CD’s slightly different. So for this design I used the grey background and the same, relevant information about the disc number tour and band name. However I added less debris to this disc , my colour scheme is still continued I think this is a good contrast to disk 1 so it will also fit in with my CD package and all my designs throughout my work.
This is the front of my ticket, my colour scheme, typography and graphic design got carried onto this to continue the theme. The ticket needs to look realistic so I added the line which gets ripped off in concerts, also the barcode, sponsors , price, standing area, the venue with times and where the 02 arena is . Also who sold you the ticket e.g. Ticketmaster, and the tour name. All of these aspects ensure the ticket looks as professional as possible.
On this slide I learnt that for the different products that is made during this project, different information needs to be presented such as the ticket needs a seating plan and the terms and conditions of purchase also the sellers logo.
This is the ticket back, the moon design isn't on this because I wanted the design to be slightly different but still the same theme, so only the debris is present in this design. Other relevant information is included such as a seating plan of the 02 academy, so people will know the layout and the area in which they are sitting or standing. The terms and conditions of purchase is included, so the customer will know what they are. The bands website and where to follow them are included so people can find out extra information.
This is the inside of the booklet, It contains the logo which is seen in other products such as the ticket. The booklet contains information such as the bands new songs on a track list which is on the album. The booklet also contains thanks from the band where they show their appreciation to everyone who has helped and supported them such as bands which has inspired them, and sponsors and the record company also the fans for their support.
This is my flyer front, this will immediately get the customers attention since it is recognisable as Dark Flame with the theme, logo and name. The customer will want to know what it is advertising. This contains links that customers can use such as social media sites, the bands website and the record company. Customers can use these for extra information about the bands events.
On this slide I learnt that each product has different amounts of detail included since they have different uses such as the CD booklet will need less information since it goes inside another product, but the flyer will need more since it is advertising the band.
This is the back of my flyer, it contains all of the relevant information about the bands event which is being held. I contained information such as the tour, special guests, sponsors, the time and date, the price, and free merchandise. This will promote the band and offer events to fans, this could increase the number of fans the band has, so the band is more successful and popular.
This is the outside of the CD booklet, I just added a graphic design onto it since this will be inserted into the CD package, this means it needs to link in with the theme presented within the CD package so it is recognisable to the other products. I included the bands name and logo with the design.
This is the inside of the CD package, I used a 6 fold design since I wanted to adapt the standard design so it is more detailed to promote the product, the two flaps will be cut into triangles during the making stage. Once I adapted the standard design I added my background colour and debris designs with the tour name and logo, so it fits in with the outside net, this is less detailed since it will hold both CD’s and the booklet- It is the background design. This is the outside design of my CD package, so this will be the most seen side because it will have the front and back design shown also with the centre spine. Since this is the outside net it needed different information included such as the track list for each CD, the barcode, terms and conditions, record company, the bands website and company information. I needed my full moon design on the front side, and parts of the debris continued throughout the net.
On this slide I learnt that the designs included in all of the products, are continued from one main design this is important so the same design isn't just repeated so this will add variation to my work with different design ideas to improve the quality.
This is my point of sales stand with the CD holder, this is A4 size to ensure it will fit the CD in and have enough space to see the design, so people will know which band it is. I made this design by adding my background colour, moon design, debris with the band name and logo, it needed to include the main design as it will hold the CD net and it will be what shows the products (people will see this first) so the other designs continue from this main design.
CADCAM: This stands for computer aided design, computer aided manufacturing. The method is usually used to convey shapes, materials, processes, dimensions and tolerances by the new design. The method is used to design figures in both 2D space and 3D objects. CADCAM is used to convey shapes, materials, processes and dimensions by the new design, It creates figures in both 2D and 3D objects. Advantages: • It is more accurate than hand drawn designs to reduce human error. • Easy and cheap to make modifications. • It reduces the time taken for the design to be created. • Replication of design. • Different designs can be combined. Disadvantages: • Expensive software. • New staff needs to be trained for software use. • Designing stops at the manufacturing stage. • Slower the traditional methods. • System engineers to maintain computers and keep them running. Vinyl: I added vinyl to my work because it enhances the look of my product by making certain areas more prominent increasing the quality it is also simple and cost effective, It gives the work an embossed effect: embossing is the surface decoration on a product by raising the design. Embossing works best with heavy, long fibred sheets. lightweight or heavy coated papers don’t work well since they crack easily. Using recycled paper isn't good since it is weaker so it couldn’t withstand the pressures of embossing. By working out the thickness of the material, you can work out the depth and degree of the bevel. If the material is thicker it gives a better impression on the work by making it stand out and dramatic, since thicker cuts can be made deeper, Varying levels of relief become possible. On this slide I learnt that all of the materials added to my product have a certain effect on the quality and improvement, all materials have different effects to enhance my work, and they all are suited to be placed on different parts of the product e.g. the hologram on the ticket to stop forgery and the vinyl to overlap part of a design to improve the quality.
Vinyl:
Smart Materials: Materials which have properties which react to changes in their environment. One of their properties can be changed by an external condition e.g. temperature. The change is reversible and can be repeated many times. Modern Materials: Items developed through the invention of new or improved processes, as a result of man made materials or human intervention. Product Materials: An example of a smart material which I could use in my product is phosphorescent paper, this makes certain parts of my product glow in the dark, which improves the quality of work to enhance it so it looks bold since it stands out. An example of a modern material which I am using in my product is a hologram this will be placed on the ticket which acts as security because it ensures a ticket can not be forged since a hologram has specific properties which cannot be copied, so tickets which contain a hologram are authentic. This is a plotter cutter, It uses knives to cut into a piece of material e.g. paper or vinyl that is lying flat on the surface of the plotter. The plotter cutter is connected to the computer and specialized cutting and design software programs , this sends the relevant dimensions and designs to the plotter cutter. Laminate: To laminate something means to overlay a flat surface with a layer of plastic or other protective material. The ticket is laminated to make it more durable and waterproof this suits what tickets are used for since they are handled a lot and they are needed for concerts.
This is an example of phosphorescent material.
These images show my debris work on 2D design for my product, the sizes are included.
This is an example of a hologram on a ticket design. I made a 2D design for my product by seeing what images/parts and colours of my product would look best with a 2D design in place I decided the debris design could have vinyl aspects to improve my product. I made shapes for the debris on 2D design, I vectorised my design to improve the quality then it was sized exactly to ensure it was correct to fit over some debris on my work. When this was done my design was cut out using the plotter cutter, which is very accurate. After it was cut out I then stuck it on my product over my debris design to enhance it on my point of sales stand, transfer paper was used to stick my vinyl on. The plotter cutter couldn’t cut out items too small or it wouldn’t be accurate, so my debris design needed to be made bigger.
This is the final nest of my product, all of my work is grouped together closely this is known as tessellation. This was done so less paper was wasted so it is better for the environment since this saves paper it also costs less money and energy for materials since more work can fit on one nest. The nest is large enough to fit all on my product in and for them to be the correct size so it is accurate- the printing is not blurred since the designs are bigger. Since the nest is big it makes it easier for all of the products to be cut out since they are all together(not on separate sheets). However nesting is also very time consuming since all of the designs are together on a big sheet it takes longer to print.
On this slide I learnt that it is important to save materials so there are various ways in which that can be done (nesting) this benefits everyone by saving money and the environment, less paper is wasted when the designs are cut out.
These are 3D drawings of my point of sales stand, showing different angles of the product. To show how it looks and how it was constructed e.g. the stand.
This is a one point perspective drawing of my final CD net, it gives a different view on how you can look at a design. The annotation show how the net is folded- how it works.
These are hand drawn designs of my final net, they show different aspects of my product e.g. when it opens out, and how it looks when it is folded up.

On this slide I learnt that it is important to know each step of the making process so each part of the design can be made to a good standard because the making will be controlled so improvements can be made.
The making of my products is ordered, so after each section the quality can be checked and improved so the accuracy is increased so the quality of the products can be maintained so the designs look professional and realistic.
Materials and Equipment Used: • Photoshop computer software • 2D design computer software • Vinyl • White and grey card • Hologram • Printing ink • Laminate for the laminator • Large format printer • Plotter cutter • Craft knife • Safety ruler • Scissors • Cutting mat • Ballpoint pen • Glue Stick/ Glue gun
On this slide I learnt that all of the various aspects in making a product are important for the final outcome/make, and many different things need to be considered to get to the final stage such as quality control.
This page shows previous main pages which have been the steps in developing and making my final designs such as my nest, quality control flow chart, perspective drawings, production record and photos of the make. They show what is involved in getting to the final stage- from the information included on this slide my design could be made again. To get to the final design various programmes and techniques were used in the making.
Manufacturing Techniques/Symbols Used: • 2D design/ CADCAM • Barcode • Production logo • Band logo and name • Copyright logo • Parental advisory logo • Website name for the band • Terms and conditions • Producers name • Recycling logo • Embossing
These are my photos of the making process, they are shown in order from the nest to the final products. The developments and what I did for each stage is shown, so it can be seen how I got to my final outcomes and specific materials involved in the making of each product to prove the best available materials were used so my final designs can look realistic and professional.
The tools I used are also shown such as the craft knife and safety ruler to show I actually did use them for accurate measurements and a good quality making design. Some parts of my work is shown at different angles so you can see the perspective points, to give an accurate image of what my designs look like also how they have been made up such as the point of sales stand.
On this slide I learnt that it is important to show the stages in development in my making process, so I can see how everything was done- This is useful for improvements. Also the materials and tools are both important in creating a high quality final product.
The images below show some of the equipment used, not shown in other slides. There is a large format printer- used to print my nest, A laminator- used to laminate the ticket and the material used to make the hologram which gets stuck onto the ticket.
Target Market: I made my graphic designs on my products very unique but professional, so it would appeal to my target market age of 14-30 so my design had to interest both age groups of teens and young adults to achieve a successful customer range to promote my product, this is also very useful in advertisement so more people are interested in the same product. I stated that the gender for this music genre doesn't matter since it appeals to both men and women because the design- moon theme and colour choices e.g. grey, red, blue and white won’t be suited towards one gender more than the other, The design mainly reflects the music genre so it depends weather that interests you if you will like this product. I said I am focusing my product mainly on areas like the UK and USA since that is where the biggest fan bases are, However out of the two I am going to focus more on the UK since that is where all on the concert venues are for the band so people in the UK are more likely to go, and find out about the band. Throughout my work I stuck to the punk rock genre with the designs and colour scheme, so fans would stay interested because my product are keeping to their likes in the music industry, not the dislikes e.g. pop music. The designs on my products are unique and eye catching to draw peoples attention, this way the band can compete with other bands and downloads- the music will be on ITunes, My product also meets the customers specifications such as it is a good quality and an affordable price. Design Brief: I have followed this design brief all through my project, It stated I had to create band publicity material such as a poster, ticket, CD case and flyer. For my CD case I had to include a net design with a minimum of four folding panels containing at least 2 CD’s and relevant information, Also smart and modern materials needed to be included on my products. I have completed the design brief by making/designing all of the relevant products which also reflect the music genre and the bands image. I also made aspects of my products stand out so it is eye catching for successful advertisement, so it suits it’s purpose and it can also compete with other bands advertisement. The relevant design that is related/ recognisable to the band such as the moon, debris and colour scheme have been continued throughout this project so it looks professional and realistic, so customers will be more likely to be interested in the products. I am happy with how my final design has turned out since it meets the design brief which was set at the start of this project. On this slide I learnt that throughout a project it is important to keep in mind the targets set at the start to create a successful product so it meets certain specifications. This will promote the product since customers know the band is serious about the production.
Customer Profile: Throughout this project I have included my customer profile, who comments on my work saying her opinion of my slide- Good aspects of it also how it is useful to my project. The customer is a fan of punk rock music so I tried to base my product around this, to suit what potential customers would want in a punk rock genre band. This will therefore promote the band since the specifications have been met throughout my work. It is important to meet the customer profile to increase the bands success, To make my work fit the punk rock genre I added certain features to my products such as the grey colour scheme and a recognisable repeatable logo throughout my designs to make the band more appealing to my customers, then these improvements were commented on giving the customers views, so I knew if my genre was showing in my designs and the products I made.
Aesthetics: I had kept to my colour scheme for my designs with the dark background, Also colours like red , purple and blue which go well with this background and also stands out to reflect the music genre also the moon/debris design which I made goes well with these colours, My rose logo matches my products adding detail to make the product successful.
Materials: I used certain materials in my designs such as the card, laminate and vinyl, However phosphorescent wasn't used since a hologram was used instead for security purposes to make my product look more realistic and professional. All of the materials used were suitable since they provided durability.
Instructions: I included a CD booklet in my designs for the CD case which did contain the relevant information e.g. song names and designs. This serves it’s purpose by giving extra information to fans and promoting the product since it looks professional.
Cost: Since the materials used add to the cost, I used as little as possible to still have a good quality design. This reduced the price of the whole product so it is more affordable for the target market, so customers are more likely to buy it.
Function: All the functions of my products have been met, such as my products advertise the band using the correct aesthetics, the CD package is practical so it protects the two CD’s to avoid damage and promote sales. The CD allows easy access to music also to store in shops and houses e.g. A good size.
Timescale: The deadline was exceeded for this product as it was meant to be completed for December 2013, now the deadline is February 2014 which I have managed to achieve, with all my work completed to the best of my ability.
Size and Weight: The sizing is accurate, so it is just the right size to fit in both CD’s and the booklet, The package will use minimum materials to reduce the weight so it is quite light for the customers to carry around, Also it is more convenient for shop owners to put out.
Durability: I made my product to the best quality possible with strong materials e.g. card and laminate also plenty glue to increase it’s durability so the product can serve it’s purpose to a good standard and a long time. Target Market: My designs in my products reflects the target market, as the design is unique and professional to suit the range of customers likes, this will promote product sales since it will appeal to a wide range of customers. On this slide I learnt the importance of meeting the goals which were set at the start of the project to make sure my product is realistic, and all the designing and making aspects have been considered to make my product successful, If a target wasn't met or a change was made it is necessary to explain why to see how the product has developed.
Ergonomics: Due to accurate measuring and making my products don’t pose a safety issue and is a good quality since the equipment was used effectively. I was able to make it a good quality with using a minimum amount of materials to save money and resources. Relevant symbols e.g. parental advisory was placed on my CD cover for realism.
Safety: I made sure my products didn’t contain any loose parts, and I cut my products accurately to reduce the sharpness, Also some edges were rounded off to avoid this. The materials used are safe for customers to handle e.g. no roughness or flammability.. Testing: I did compare my final CD package to another professional one from a real band, The colour scheme and layout was similar since it is the same genre this shows I have been successful in designing a realistic product, so this appeals to customers. The real product was made to a better standard, but it was constructed using industrial machinery and better materials, however my CD package is well constructed due to the materials and tools available, Its is durable enough for it’s purpose.
Environmental Issues: The environment was considered in the making of my products as I used minimal amounts of materials, which some could have been made from recycled products, This helps to conserve resources and the environment. My products are mostly made from card which is recyclable and biodegradable which also benefits the environment and saves resources since other product can be mad from recycled materials.
Issues: I made sure there was no material on my products which could offend anyone e.g. I included a parental advisory label. None of my work is copyright as I made my own unique designs, I also checked for any aspects which could be considered as copyright before printing. My products are made for recyclable materials.

Opinion 1: Rachel Kramer I think that the final product has turned out professional and realistic as the target market, design brief and customer profile have been met. On the final product there are few mistakes, and the colour scheme goes well with the font style, logo and music genre. I like the rose logo used because it is very unique to the band- there is no other logos like it. It is also good how Rachel made her own designs for her product (e.g. the moon design) which made the products look professional and different. Opinion 2: Zoe Fisk Rachel’s products were successful, and made to a good standard since all the measurements made were accurately. All of the goals set at the start of this project have been met, Rachel has used a range of materials accurately including vinyl, card, laminate and a hologram which improves the product- all of these materials are suitable for their purpose. The only safety issues involved is some sharp edges and card is also flammable if in contact with fire. Overall I think this product is well made, so I would buy it.
Opinion 3: Emily Fay This product looks realistic and suits the target market which Improvements: improves the product. The only improvements I would suggest is As addressed in peoples opinions and some of my own views there are some that the net design is fairly detailed therefore complicated so it could improvements that need to be made within certain aspects of my work, such as I need to be difficult for some customers to follow and use, So I would try to try and resolve some of the safety issues like the sharp edges- To do this I am going to make it simpler like most CD packages on the market. Also the logo round off some more of the edges, unfortunately there is nothing I can do about the design is very complicated, most bands logos are simple and flammability apart from tell people to keep it away from flames. Also I want to try and recognisable. Apart from that I would definitely purchase this reduce some of the marks from the making process e.g. scratches and glue marks- this product it has been accurately constructed to a good quality. wouldn’t be seen in factory production. For future some of the detail could be taken out of the logo, so it looks simpler and more effective, However people will mainly focus on My Opinion: the moon design, Also as said in the first opinion it looks unique to the band so in this I really like how my final designs have turned out as the music way it will be recognised. genre has really come across because the font, colours, designs and logo really compliment each other so they are eye catching. I On this slide I learnt that it is important to believe my final products have been cut out as accurately possible get other peoples views on a product so with suitable materials used- designed to improve the quality of my improvements can be suggested to work, so overall it has been successful to look like a realistic enhance the designs. This gives a wider product. I am grateful of the comments given, they give me ideas to look on the products so it has a insight to improve and enhance my work. see what potential customers might say, so you can meet their needs.
Modifications: If I could make my product again there are certain aspects I would change/ improve on such as the materials used e.g. the glue stick was difficult to use and it was not as effective as other methods such as a spray adhesive. In construction the materials available at school are very limited even though they suit the purpose, there are more advanced materials which could perform better so they will be more effective, making my products more professional looking and realistic, also increasing the durability e.g. with thicker card because the card given is thin so it is bending from the dampness in the storage room. I would also take more care and accuracy in the making process so there wouldn’t be any glue or scratch marks on my products to improve the quality, this could be done by finding a larger work area to keep my products separated from other peoples work and equipment to reduce the risk of damage . I would also spend more time on the designing aspects e.g. logo simplicity and colour, to meet all the needs of my target market, Also to respond to the feedback about my final product since the people are in my target market so are potential customers, This also includes making my CD package easier to use and follow. Another thing I would change would be the printing quality, even though it is adequate I would still amend it by making the images clearer and including final effects e.g. a gloss look this will improve the printed quality. Finally I would add more manufacturing symbols such as the recycle sign to my CD package, to make sure it looked realistic for a successful outcome. Overall I do like my final work as it has turned out successful with the given materials , tools and workspace, It has reached a high quality as all my set targets have been met, and the print quality is sufficient (not blurred). With the font, colours, designs and logo I think it does look like a genuine punk rock CD package. Commercial Production: Commercial production is the production of products on a mass scale, To then be later sold to a mass scale audience. Commercial production includes: One off Production: This is the production of only one product such as my CD package, So the products are graphically different. Batch Production: This is when a set quantity of a product is made, this requires lots of workforce and templates- machines are changed to fit the products design ready for mass production e.g. concert posters. Mass Production: This is when a very large number of a product is made usually on a production line, The products change regularly so it is not on a continuous production e.g. magazines. Continuous Production: This is when thousands of a product is made, It is always running to avoid the stop and starting process. It is automated with only a few workers required e.g. cereal packaging. Just in Time Production: This is when a company only buys enough stock to cover it’s immediate needs, so the right amount of material arrives when needed. It also reduces storage costs, allows production runs to change more quickly and reduces materials overstock. Commercial Production: My final product is a one off production, However it could become commercially viable because the machines needed for batch and mass On this slide I learnt that it is important to think ahead for the possible outcomes for a product, production can be easily changed to suit the design and template of a So it is known what type of commercial product to suit the demand for it, so materials are not wasted. My production is needed to suit specific aspects of products dimensions can be adapted into the product, so the design a product such as the demand and the can be accurately printed on top of the package, In these production complexity. Modifications is needed so lines the products are a high quality with few mistakes increasing the improvements can be made to other copies in accuracy, and likelihood customers will buy this item. the future to increase the quality.
These images are examples of the different types of production so what type of product is made by each production method can be seen- One off, Batch, Mass and continuous production.
This is the final products/designs of the whole class.
This is my final designs of all my products which I have made, All of my work meets the target market, design specification and customer profile. The images included shows different angles and products of my final make for example my CD booklet and point of sales stand. There is an image showing all of my products together, this is the final outcome of the making aspect of my project.
