GCSE COURSEWORK

Design Brief

A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for future events. The set must include a CD case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CD’s Promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material.

Target Market

The type of person who buy my CD would be within the age range of 15-30 years old. They would like rock music as the CD is advertising rock music. My customer would be male or female as the music fits both styles which also gives me a wider target audience. The geographical location of the students would be near the local universities/high schools and the band would play in small local clubs this will be good for the publicity of my band as there will be a lot of young people attending those clubs that will be part of my target audience. The target audience would have to like going to concerts, loud music and rock music. The audience wouldn’t like classical music, club/ dance music and old fashioned clothes. The customer wants a good background, title and good effects on the front of the CD cover also they want effective colours and music that they like. The factors the customer will consider are the front cover, the type of music and the price. The cost of the CD may influence the buyer as the CD will be just below average for CD’s as the band is not a very big band so the customer may consider the cheap price.

Hi, I'm John, I ‘m 15 and I live in Blarblar. I am also a student at **** ** high school . I love football and I have a strong passion for rock music. I have £10 a week to spend on music. My favourite type of music is obviously rock as I love going to festivals. I think I would like your band as I am a rock fanatic and love all types of rock music. Also the pricing of your CDs is good for me as I could probably afford to buy your CD .

Research Plan

I will be looking at and researching existing posters to influence and inspire my ideas. I will also be analyzing posters and a four fold CD to help with my own product by showing me what I will need in my product to make it suitable. The product analysis will hopefully show me what criteria I must include in my product to make my product successful. I will also be looking at colour theory and what colours work well with each other.

I like the design you have used as it is effective. You could improve how easily the writing is to see as it is a bit hard to read.

Aesthetics – The colours used in this poster work well together because they are complimentary colours. The images used are effective because they have been edited through software like Photoshop to have unique look. The typography used is effective because they have different effects on them for example they have used erosion to enhance the poster. The poster is also easy to view as the images and typography are well spaced out and have a nice flow to them. Client – The client of the poster would be around the age range of 15 – 30 years old as this poster advertises a music competition. The client must be able to sing or play an instrument. Cost - The cost of the poster would be around £5-8 as the poster has included lots of effects and images which may have been complicated to do increasing the cost of the poster. As another issue the designer may have been paid a fair bit which may increase the cost of the poster. Environment – The materials used probably will be recyclable because the poster will probably be made from photo print paper however the product wont be able to be reused. Ergonomics – The poster does have appropriate size as the size looks like it would be A3. Also the shape of this poster is appropriate as it is a normal poster shape. Safety – The poster does have slightly sharp edges but this is not really a safety issue. Overall the poster does not have any safety issues therefore the poster is safe for the end user. Size - The poster is shaped as a rectangle and its size is roughly A3.

Function - The purpose of the poster is too advertise a music competition called Music Madness. In my opinion the poster advertises the competition well as it has appropriate information and images. Materials - The materials would have to be weatherproof and it cant be easily ripped. The actual poster is probably made from photo print paper with a plastic canvas over it.

Aesthetics – The appearance of this this CD packaging is very effective because the colours used contrast each other. Also the images used are quite simple but effective because it creates a unique front cover Client – The client of this CD would be around the age range of 20 – 30 as the songs are from 2002. Also the client would be a fan of the style of music and since the CD is not very well known it wouldn't have a large fan base. Cost - The cost of this CD would be around £5-£15 because the CD is not well known and also the effects used aren't very complicated. Function – The function of this product is to carry the CD and advertise the CD. I think it does its job well because its unique and it has different pockets for the CD’s to go in . In my opinion however I don't think it stands out much therefore customers may not want buy this product.

Environment – The materials used would be recyclable because it is made from a card type material however the product wont be able to be reused. Ergonomics – The product is very easy to use as the designers have made the CD package as small as possible to make it easily stored. Also the product will be lightweight therefore making it more useful for the user.

Materials – The product is made from card and plastic. These are Safety – The safety of this product is reasonably good as it has no sharp suitable materials as they are very light and also quite strong and edges and it has no small pieces for small children to consume. durable. The materials would have been glued together using glue tabs. This minimizes product waste. Size – The size of the product would be around 14cm x 12cm. This is a good size for a CD package as it is the average size., but it can be refined making it What I have learned: more environmentally friendly. I have learned the criteria of a good four fold CD and what it must include to make it successful. Also I it increased my knowledge of existing four fold CDs

Product information The product information text size has been made very small as the manufacturer wanted to fit lots of information onto the product

Outside of the net The outside of the net is very colourful this is because it has to attract the customer. Also the design wraps around the whole product which gives it a professional look

Glue Tabs Glue tabs are used to stick the net together. The Recyclable Barcode A recyclable logo tells manufacturers only use a few drops of glue to A barcode is used to identify a productthe buyer that the produce less waste. There is no colour on the tabs as in shops, and so the salesman can seeproduct is recyclable. it would be a waste of ink as this part of the net is not the price of a product. seen Inside of the net The inside of the net is plain and boring with no colour on i This is because this part of th product is not seen therefore it will be a waste of ink if they were to put colour on the inside.

Logo The logo is used to advertise the product and its used numerous times on the packaging. The logo is very recognisable and stands out vey well. The logo is unique to each company

Die Cutter The die cutter is used to cut the net of a product. It works by putting a stencil under the die cutter and pulling the leaver fully back. This then cuts out the net.

What I have learned: I have learned the how a existing product/four fold CD can be put together and what aspects the case needs to be successful and low cost.

What I have learned: I will use my mood board to take certain images from it and develop them in to logo ideas. I have learned what makes a good logo as this was part of my research

I like your mood board as it works well with your theme however I don't think you need the image (space invader) at the bottom as it looks out of place.

What have I learned: In this page I have learned what it takes to have a successful product. I have also so learned some colour schemes that works well with each other. I have also learnt what criteria I must include in my product.

Primary Colours Primary colours are the key colours. There are three primary colours – Red, Yellow and Blue. Primary colours cannot be made by mixing other colours together. Primary colours can be mixed to create secondary colours. Secondary Colours If you mix even quantities of two primary colours you will make secondary colours. There are three secondary colours – Green, Orange and Purple. Secondary colours can be mixed with primary colours to create tertiary colours. Tertiary Colours Tertiary colours are combinations of primary and secondary colours. Tertiary colours can be described as Purple has the longest wavelength of all different shades of secondary colours. There are six tertiary colours; red-orange, colours. Its very rare in nature and is yellow-orange etc. believed to be super natural.

I like the typography on this and I like the colours on this however the colours don’t go with the band name.

Red is the colour of extremes and its the colour of passionate love, seduction, violence, danger and anger red captures attention.

This is my favourite out of all four designs as I like both the typography and the colours on this as the colours are effective as they go with the band name also I think the text suits the name as well. I don't think the typography and the colours used are very good because they both don’t suit the band name and also they both don’t well together I like the typography as it suits the band name also I like the colours used however don't think the work well together

I like this page as you have included a lot of information and you described which typography you like and why. I agree with you as my favourite one is the second from the top as it works well with the colours and with your band name.

Yellow is a symbol of happiness, sunshine, spring, optimism, creativity, cowards, betrayal and madness Orange is a mixture of red and yellow. It symbolises energy, cheer and excitement.

Green is the colour of grass and is mostly associated with nature and Islam. Blue is natures colour for water and sky but is rarely found in fruits and vegetables What have I learned: In this page I have learned what colours work well together and what colours don’t. Also I have learned what typography I will probably use as I got it evaluated by my peers

What have I learned: In this page I have learned what tools and materials I am going to use on this page and when and how I am going to use. I have also learned what safety issues I need to consider when using the tools as the may cause injuries.

Carbon Footprint My products carbon footprint should be kept low because I plan to keep my product as environmentally friendly as possible. The carbon footprint is the amount of CO2 that is produced so this must be kept to a low. Copyright There will not be many copyright issues with my product as it will not be for commercial use. Also I am using my own hand drawn images and logos which will make my product unique. If I was to mass produce my product however there would be more copyright issues involved Environmental The environmental issues is a very important issue to consider when designing my product. I will make sure that my product is environmentally friendly by using recyclable materials such as grey board. Ethical This is an important issue as it may offend groups people or countries. I need to ensure that my content and design does not offend anyone. An example of an offensive poster is the star bucks poster as it refers to the 911 offending a lot of people when it was used. I will ensure my designs do not contain any designs that offend others. Fair Trade Fair trade means paying the farmer/producer of the product e.g. Cocoa beans a fair price. Paying these farmers for example will allow them to have better facilities, living and working conditions, this will benefit them a lot. Hopefully, the school will provide fairtrade materials. If I was to get the materials myself I would use fair trade materials as it means that my products can be made fairly at a fair price, even though I may have to pay more money. Recycling Recycling is a very important issue to consider. It means using the materials from a product like metal for example to make/create another product. Recycling is important as it reuses materials which reduces the use of new raw materials like oil this means recycling is sustainable. I will ensure all my products are recyclable as this means that people can reuse the materials I have used in the future. Sustainability Being sustainable is an important issues as it affects other issues. For my product to be sustainable I need to use as little materials as possible, also I need to make sure its as cheap as possible and that its recyclable. This is good for the environment. Wastage In my product I am going to make sure there is as little wastage as possible. I am going to do this by using as little glue and ink as possible, also I am going to use as little material as possible, to reduce wastage.

What have I learned: In this page I have learned what issues I must consider when making my CD as it may offend some groups or people. I also I gained some knowledge of some posters that offended people in the past and why.

Aesthetics The aesthetics of my product are very important if I want my product to be successful. The product will have to stick to a rock theme and it must be suitable for my target audience. The colours of my product must be bold, bright and eyecatching like red and yellow to attract customers. Also the colours must fit the theme of my design. The typography and the images must fit the genre of the music and they must be suitable for the target audience. Cost To make the product it will cost a maximum of ÂŁ3 as the materials used to make the product will not cost that much. The price of the final product would be around ÂŁ12 as this is a reasonable price for a CD also selling the product at this price will create some profit. Durability The durability of my product will have to be good as the product may be handled and used often. If the durability of my product was not very good the product would not be very useful for customers that use the product a lot. Environmental Issues My product will be as environmentally friendly as possible. This will be done by using recyclable materials and by not wasting useable materials. Ergonomics My product will be a triangular prism as this will make my product unique and original. My product will be safe and easy to use as it will go through teats to make this happen. Function The function of the product is to protect and hold the CD , this will be done by using a and to advertise the band and CD.

What have I learned: In this page I have learned what I must consider when making my product to make it successful. I also learned what I size and shape I am going to make my CD case.

Instructions There will not be any instructions as the product will not be difficult to use or open however I will include information on the band in a separate leaflet or on the CD packaging. Issues My product will need to avoid certain issues to make it successful. For example I will need to avoid copyright issues associated with my product, however my product will be a one off product with my own ideas included avoiding any issues with copyrights Materials I will use appropriate materials for my product. Which will need to be cheap and environmentally friendly. Safety To ensure the product is safe, there will be no sharp edges and there will be no small pieces that small children could swallow. The safety of the product is very important as it may effect the customers health. Size and Weight My product will be reasonably light as it needs to be portable as if it was heavy it would be hard to carry around. The size of my product must not be too big or it will be difficult to carry around. If it was too small however the CD would not be able to fit in the packaging. Target Market The type of person who buy my CD would be within the age range of 15-30 year olds. They would like rock music as the CD is advertising rock music. My customer would be male or female as the music fits both styles. Testing My product will undergo tests to see how reliable and safe the product. This will also increase the safety and durability of my product. To test my product I could get my test buddy to test my product. Timescale The deadline of the project is March 2014

I chose this initial idea because the image relates to my band name ‘Broken Fire’. I also chose because when I asked my class what do associate with my band name a few people said a camp fire. When I drew the image I changed the image a lot to make it more simple and effective as a logo.

I chose this initial idea because the image relates to my bands style of music ‘Rock’ this is because it’s an electric guitar which is strongly associated with Rock music. This logo will also show the customers what style of music my band plays.

I chose this initial idea because I thought that the image would work well as a logo as it’s simple and there is a lot that you can change on it to make it successful.

What have I learned: In this page I have learned that I can take inspiration form a mood board or a collage of images to create an effective logo. I have also learned what an effective logo looks like for example the Nike logo as its simple but effective I found this out by doing research of existing logos.

I chose this initial

idea because in a peer assessment a lot of people said that they liked the cards as a logo as its simple but original.

I chose this initial idea because the image relates to my bands style of music ‘Rock’ this is because it’s a rock sign which works well with my band style. This logo is also very simple and so it will work well as an effective logo.

I chose this initial idea due the fact that I really like the idea. In my drawing however I think I have messed up a bit as my lines aren’t all straight which ruins the logo slightly,

For this logo I kept it as simple as possible by only using simple colours. I got the colours from my typography page. I didn’t use any effects on this logo as I was keeping it as simple as possible For this logo I developed my second logo to create this logo I didn’t change anything instead I added one of my other logos to it.

For this logo I developed my fourth logo. To do this I erased the bottom of the logo and then used the filter ‘Find lines’. This gave the logo the ‘Techno’ effect. However in my opinion even though it looks good I am unsure if it links in with my band name. What have I learned: In this page I have learned that from one simple hand drawn idea you can develop and create a number of good looking logos. I have also learned what colours work well together. I have also learned that a simple logo is the best logo.

For this logo I developed my first logo to create this logo. I used the filter ‘Craqueler’ to create a more textured effect, this is not as simple as the first one but I think this one is more effective as it has a texture to it. For this logo I only used one colour to keep the image as simple as possible. I then used the filter ‘Extrude’ to create the effect it has. This effect gave the image a texture and to make the logo fit in with my band name ‘Broken Fire’ For this logo I only used two colours to keep the image as simple as possible. I then used the brush tool to create a colour gradient. This looks effective as it’s quite simple.

This is my original hand drawn idea that I used to create these logos

I have used this typography throughout my logos as this is my chosen typography.

My favourite logo out of all these logo developments the one on the middle right as it looks really effective as a logo. I also like because it does link in with your band name. Also there is lots you could do with it on you finished product. I also like the middle left logo and the bottom left logo.

For this logo I kept it as simple as possible by only using one simple colour. I used the eraser to crate a colour gradient. I developed this logo from my first logo. To make this logo I used the warp transform tool. I think this is better than the last logo because it’s more exiting than it.

I developed this logo from my fourth logo. To make this logo I changed the colour of it and then warped it to create a 3d effect. I also warped the text to fit in with the logo. What have I learned: In this page I have learned that from one simple hand drawn idea you can develop and create a number of good looking logos. I have also learned what colours work well together. I have also learned that a simple logo is the best logo.

I developed this logo from my first logo. To make this logo I used perspective and I used the lighting effect to create a colour change. I like this better than the first logo as it has a clean finish.

This is my original hand drawn idea that I used to create these logos

I have used this typography I developed this logo from throughout my logos as this my first. To make this logo is my chosen typography. I duplicated logo two eight times to create a circle. I think this will be good as a logo because I can imagine My favourite logo out of all these logo developments the one on the middle it being on products. right as it looks really effective as a logo. I also like because the typography works really well with I developed this logo from logo. However my favourite would be my fourth logo. To make the bottom right logo but I don't like this logo I changed the the typography on that logo colour of it to blue and therefore I don’t like it as much then duplicated it so it could make the pink areas on the logo. Again I also warped the text to fit the logo

For this logo I kept it as simple as possible by only using two block colours red and black. I created a shadow to add to the effectiveness of the logo.

For this logo I erased the red in the first logo and then got a photo of some fire and then pasted it into the empty space. I prefer the last logo as logos tend not to include real life images.

I created this logo by developing the second logo. I did this by separating the second logo and then taking the flames from my first logo and then merging them together. I like this better than the second one as it link in more with my band name broken fire

I created this logo by developing the first logo. I duplicated the first logo three times and changed the colour of each of them and then merged all of them together.

I created this logo by developing the first logo. I used a lighting effect and darkened the top of the logo. I am unsure if I like this logo as it looks a bit naff as there is a few gaps in it however this can be easily corrected

I created this logo by developing the first logo. I used a lighting effect and a lens flare to create the shadow effect. This is my favourite logo as it can be adapted into my final products easily and it’s quite simple as it only has one colour.

What have I learned: In this page I have learned that from one simple hand drawn idea you can develop and create a number of good looking logos. I have also learned what colours work well together. I have also learned that a simple logo is the best logo.

This is my original hand drawn idea that I used to create these logos

I have used this typography throughout my logos as this is my chosen typography.

My favourite logo out of all these logo developments is the one on bottom right because it has a good effect on it which makes it look professional. Also I can imagine it being on a product

What have I learned: In this page I have learned that which of my logos is the best overall. I have also learned what criteria a successful logo has to meet. I have learned what other people think of my logos and which of them I should use in my products.

Evaluation: Overall the best logo is Number 1 as it scored the highest in the evaluation. I think it scored the highest because of it’s simplicity making it an effective logo. As it scored the highest I will be using it in my designs. Overall the worst design was number 3 as it scored the lowest. I think this is because it does not link in with my band name ‘Broken Fire’

What have I learned:

In this page I have learned what essential criteria I MUST include in my products. This will help me layout my designs and piece together the appearance of my designs. Also this criteria will help me achieve successful products as these are the essential aspects I need to include in my products. Also this page will show me what makes a successful product.

This is the is the simple four-fold CD we were told to develop all my designs started off as this design. This design is very basic and is not personalised to a certain band therefore I wouldn’t use this as my actual CD design. This net design is very basic as there isn’t much complexity to it. Also this design is not as effective as my other design as the other design has a glue tab which increases the complexity and personalisation of the net.

This is my favourite net as it’s not too complicated but it is still fairly complex as it has a glue flap and a leaflet pouch. This design is personal to my band as it’s my own design and other bands haven’t used this design. Also this design fits the requirements for my net design. Therefore I am going to use this as my actual net design, What have I learned: In this page I have learned what design I want to use for my actual product. I have also learned that a successful design needs to be fairly personalised and complex but not too much as I have shown.

This design is overly complex as there are too many folds. The size of the CD package will be far too big and this will make the package look bad as it will be far to thick.

I agree with you as your favourite design looks the most effective and the other designs are too basic and overly complicated.

This was my first net design. It is a simple 4-fold CD package with basic features. The package is made of card. The model is scaled down to reduce the cost and to reduce the wastage of ink and material. Both these nets include to triangle flaps which would/could hide a CD in. This will increase the complicity of the design and it will improve the overall appearance of the net/CD package

This 4-fold net would include two CD’s, a track list, my final design and it may contain a lyric section (book). As I can’t have lyric book as there is no slot for a ‘book’ to go in.

This 4-fold net would include two CD’s, a track list and my final design however it will not contain a lyric book as there is not a slot for it to go in.

This was my second net design. It was developed from the first one by adding in a 5th fold It is a simple 5-fold CD package with again basic features. The package is made of card. The model is scaled down to reduce the cost and to reduce the wastage of ink and material.

What have I learned: I have learned that it is better to create small models as this saves money by reducing wasted materials and ink. I have also learned that the size of spines in the net design have to vary so that the CD package will fit together well and have a professional finish.

This was my third and final net design. It was developed from the first one by adding in a slot for a lyric book to go in. It is a more complex 5-fold CD package with intricate features. The package is made of card. The model is scaled down to reduce the cost and to reduce the wastage of ink and material. This design has space for two CD’s and space for a lyric book as it has a slot for one to go in. This net is in my opinion the best therefore I will be using it as my main design with maybe a few more developments. I used the craft knife to cut out my net designs as it is easy to cut straight and precisely. I used white card as it is cheap and easy to cut out. Also it doesn't rip easy making it a good material for net models.

This is a pocket for a song/lyric book to go in. It has a glue tab so that it can be stuck down. The wavy line makes the design better as it increases the complicity of the design.

The safety rule prevented me from cutting me hand whilst I was cutting out the nets. The cutting mat protected the table from being scratched from the craft knife. What have I learned: I have learned that it is better to create small models as this saves money by reducing wasted materials and ink. I have also learned that the size of spines in the net design have to vary so that the CD package will fit together well and have a professional finish.

My poster is A4 and is landscape. First of all I created my background, where I used an effective graphic design. I then added the band name and my logo, as this is a key feature to the poster. However, in my opinion it looked too ‘in your face’ therefore I decided to drop the opacity of both of them to make them look less obvious. I thought my poster looked a bit boring and plain so I duplicated the first design and put an overlay effect on it to create an effective look. As my band is to do with fire I decided on a yellow background to carry on with the fire theme. Next, I added some sponsors as a band always gets sponsors. When choosing the sponsors I chose ones which were well known and had a colour scheme that matched my own. I then added all the information that a poster would include. For important information I used a stand out red font colour. For the dates however I used a neutral grey colour as it was easy on the eye.

Like the poster I started off with a plain yellow background. I then used the same design from the poster on my ticket however, dropped the opacity of it to make it fainter. I then added a middle rectangle that I dropped the opacity off, this created a professional look. Next, I added the logo of the venue I am using and my band name. I then added my logo and a dashed lined to represent the part of the ticket you tear off when at the door of the venue. I then added the details of the concert. To complete the front of the ticket I added a bar code, the logos of the ticket distributers and I then added the details of the concert on the end that would be ripped off. For the back of my ticket I used the same background as the front of the ticket to keep a theme going. Next, I added a map of the venue I am using. I then added the logos of sponsors and information for social media. I then added the details of the terms and conditions. To complete the back of the ticket I added a IR code and the logos of the ticket distributers What have I learned: I have learned how my work has been developed throughout the project. I have also learned how designs begin as simple backgrounds and can be developed into good designs.

My leaflet is 26cm by 8cm and is landscape. I started of my leaflet by sticking with the colour scheme by having a yellow background. I then used a similar design to all my other products and put it on both sides to make it symmetrical. I then added text and quotes in a triangular arrangement to add to the symmetrical effect.

My flyer is 18cm by 13cm and is landscape. First of all I used my background from my poster and then developed it to make it slightly different. I then added my band name and logo as this is needed to be able to identify my band. I then added the venue and when the concert is on. To finish it off I added an offer to make the reader want to come to the concert more. My flyer back is 18cm by 13cm and is landscape. First of all I used my background from my flyer front and then developed it to make it slightly different. I did this by swapping round I then added my band name and logo as this is needed to be able to identify my band. I then added a social media account and a website to provide more information.

For the outside of my leaflet I used the same background as the inside. Since the outside doesn’t need any information on it I decided all I would need is the band name and logo.

What have I learned: I have learned how my work has been developed throughout the project. I have also learned how designs begin as simple backgrounds and can be developed into good designs.

My point of sales stand is 27cm by 21cm and is landscape. First of all I used my background from my poster and flipped it. I then added my band name in a faded effect to make it blend with the background. I didn’t add any information as the point of sales stand is only used to attract people.

To make the CD I started of with a stencil of a CD. I then added in my design from my CD package to make it blend in. I then added the name of my band in purple as purple is a complimentary colour to yellow. I then added the terms and conditions around the edge and added music producers and the CD number.

To make the CD 2 I started of with a stencil of a CD. I then added in my design from my CD package but instead I changed the background colour to purple to give a contrast between the two CDs. I then added the name of my band in yellow as yellow is a complimentary colour to purple. I then added the terms and conditions around the edge and added music producers and the CD number. What have I learned: I have learned how my work has been developed throughout the project. I have also learned how designs begin as simple backgrounds and can be developed into good designs.

To create the package outside I first created the background. I did this by using a plain yellow background and using the extrude filter effect. After I made my background I decided to add the band logo and name on it. I altered my logo so that that it would fit in with background. I used a purple text as it is a complimentary colour to yellow. I then added my band name on the spine of the CD package and I added a barcode, a logo of the music producer and terms and conditions. The last thing I did to complete the package was to add in the song lists which I used a font colour of purple.

To create the inside of the package I used the background from the outside which I flipped horizontally. I then added the logo (like on the on the outside). As it looked quite plain I decided to add my logo in again but this time I would use the colour version of it.. This added a contrast of colour but I still thought that it was too plain so I decided to add in my band name in different sizes to give my package a ‘unique’ effect.

What have I learned: I have learned how my work has been developed throughout the project. I have also learned how designs begin as simple backgrounds and can be developed into good designs.

This is the process I did to make my CAD-CAM design. First I started with my logo, I then drew round my logo to create an outline of it. Finally I measured the design and scaled it to the size I wanted it.

CAD stands for ‘Computer Aided Design’ and CAM stands for ‘Computer Aided Manufacturing.

Advantages of CAD-CAM Disadvantages of CAD-CAM • It’s cheap • The plotter cutter can be a hazard • It’s fast and reliable. to inexperienced users because of • It’s consistently accurate the sharp blade inside. • It graphically enhances a product’s • Expensive to buy initially. look. Smart Materials A smart material is a material that changes it’s properties due to a change in an external stimuli. Phosphorescent material is an example of a smart material. What the material does is, it absorbs light and then emits essentially it’s ‘glow in the dark’ material. I may use phosphorescent material in my design to enhance the aesthetics of my publicity products.

Modern Materials Modern materials are materials that have been developed through the invention of new or improved processes. For example a hologram. I am going to use a hologram on my ticket for copyright reasons and to make my ticket look professional.

I exported my design from Photoshop and I then imported it into 2D Design. 2D Design is a CAD/CAM program that is linked to the School Technology Department’s plotter cutter. For the design I am using a orange and yellow vinyl I am going to place the vinyl design on this part of the design because it is plain and empty. The vinyl will enhance my design by creating an embossing and glossy effect.

This is a plotter cutter which I am going to use to cut out the vinyl. This is only a small scale plotter cutter which is not used for mass production. However it is fine to use for my product.

What have I learned: I have learned what modern and smart materials are and what they are used for. I have also learned what CAD-CAM stands for and the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD-CAM are.

Before I was allowed to print I had to put all of my products I wished to print into one nest. By nesting my products it reduced the amount of wasted material as it decreased the amount of white space. Nesting helps save the environment by reducing wastage and by reducing wastage it also saves you money. I printed my design on a piece of paper 38 inches wide as this is the size at which the school printer can print at. At this size it allowed me to still have a high standard for my products.

I really like the logo it’s simple and effective as it links in with the band name as well. The colour scheme is alright, not the best but not the worst. I think it could be improved by having more complimentary colours as it looks a bit too consistent. I have not seen any designs like yours so they are definitely unique. Your designs could be made better as there is a few strayed edges and marks on the work. All your products fit together. They all follow a simple trend.

The logo really fits in with your work which is very effective and I really like it. The colour scheme fits in very well with your band name and genre as it is stereotypical of fire and rock music. Your designs are very unique as your CD package design is very unusual for your average CD package. Your deigns in my opinion are well made as they all look good and are made to a good standard. I especially like your ticket as it looks like a real ticket.

Your logo is very good as it is easy to remember which makes it a good logo. The colour scheme really works. It fits in with your designs and band name very well. Your designs are unique as there is no other designs like yours. Your work could be made better. It looks like it could have been a bit rushed or even a lack of concentration but there is a few un-tidy edges.

What have I learned: I have learned what other people think of my work and I have learned how I can use feedback to improve my work even more. Also I have learned what areas I need to work on by looking at the table.

This outlines all the main processes needed to make the products. Also it states what equipment and materials. The production record also states any health and safety aspects for each process and quality control.

This shows all the products that need to be made and how they need to be laid out to reduce wastage.

This shows what to do for each stage while making the products and gives us a bit of quality control.

Materials Needed • Grey Board • White Card • Large format printer paper • Vinyl • Hologram • Blank CD

Tools Needed • Craft Knife • Plotter Cutter • Safety Ruler • Pritt Stick • Glue gun • Laminator • Scissors • Large Format Printer • Cutting Mat • Guillotine

This was the initial goal I set out to achieve. I strongly believe I have met this goal. This is because I have created several suitable products that are all made to a good standard. This was the target audience I wanted to appeal to. I think I have managed to attract that audience, as my products suit the need of my audience as the designs are of a younger audience and all my designs fit in with genre I set out with.

I believe my designs stand out which is what my audience would like. As the genre of my band is rock which has a stereotype of being a bit different which means that my audience would expect my deigns to be like they are.

I believe my designs attract the appropriate genre and not one that it doesn’t appeal to, because my deigns are different to any other designs and since a stereo type of rock artists is that they are different, it means that my deigns fit in with the rock genre. I believe my products are as cost effective as possible. This is because the school has provided me with cheapest and most effective materials they could use meaning I have been as cost effective as possible. This is my customer profile. I think my products definitely fit in with his requirements, as it is in his price range and suitable to his genre specification.

All the materials I have used are fairly cheap, for example white card, Also I have reduced wastage to reduce the cost.

Supported by 3rd party feedback, my products meet this brief. As they all said that they look good.

My products are very durable as I have used suitable materials like white and grey card. I have also laminated my tickets to make them more durable.

I used my issues page to help me to make sure I covered every issue. For example not being meeting all cultural ethics. All the materials I have used are the best materials I could get for my products. For example grey board as it is strong and durable.

I did a materials and tools page and included all safety aspects that needed to be considered. For example sharp points.

I have reduced wastage of materials by using already used card and by cutting out at the edges to get the most use of one material, and I have used recyclable materials.

I carefully worked out each size for each product so that it would be appropriate for it’s function. I did this by using my modelling to help. My products are very suitable for my target market as I explained in the brief. As all my products meet the requirements.

This design was not made as it was too hard to produce and it wouldn’t have looked as good. All my products do the function that they were supposed to do. For example the point of sales stand advertises my products well and hols my CD package.

I have reached the deadline as I have used my time after school to my advantage. This meant I had all of my products finished and ready to be marked.

I did modelling to test all my products to see if they are suitable for their functions. My test buddy ensured that all my products are suitable for their functions.

Modifications One thing I would change is how I cut out my products. I think when I was cutting out my products I rushed a bit which made the quality of the finished products not as good as they could have been in my opinion however I still think my work is at a high standard. Therefore if I was to do it again I would spend more time cutting out to get the best finish as possible. Also I think I have wasted a lot of time talking to people whilst I should have been working which again made me lose concentration making my work not as good. Another thing that I would change is the actual designs. I would definitely change the background of my designs and make them look better and smoother. I would also change the fonts of my designs as I think that they are a bit naff and they don’t suit the design as much as I wanted it to. I would also change the way my products are stored as I stored them in the store cupboard where people would go into it and move it. On a couple of occasions I found that people had gone into the store room and had fiddled with my work creating marks and scuff on it. Therefore I would store it in a secure location in a cover that stops my work from getting marked. I would also change the materials I used for the CD case because it’s made of card and paper which means after a while it Will begin to fall apart.

My Production I have used one off production as I will not be needing to make any more products as I will not be marketing my products. One off-production: In one-off production a single product is designed and made to a client's specification. Manufacturing and material costs are high, and a high level of design and manufacturing skills are needed. An example of one-off production would be a made-to-measure wedding dress. Commercial Production My products could easily be commercially viable as they are simple designs with minimum components. All the products are the correct size for their functions they all look like real commercialised products. However the only thing that will need to be improved is the print and material quality as at school I was fairly limited to what I could have used. Batch Production: is when a small quantity of identical products are made. Batch production may also be labour intensive, but templates are used to help the production process. Batches of the product can be made as often as required. The machines can be easily changed to produce a batch of a different product. Mass Production: is when hundreds of identical products are made, usually on a production line. There is usually some automation of tasks (eg by using Computer controlled machinery) and this enables a smaller number of workers to produce a greater number of products. Continuous Production: is when many thousands of identical products are made. The difference between this and mass production is that the production line is kept running 24 hours a day, seven days a week to maximise production and eliminate the extra costs of starting and stopping the production process. The process is highly automated and few workers are required. What have I learned: I have learned what all the different types of production are and why they are used. I have also learned how each production method is used for the best end result.

These two photos show me backing the CD package with white card. I did this to make the package stronger and so that the package doesn’t bend or crease in certain places.

This photo show me putting together the pouch to hold my CD package. I used grey card as it need to be strong to hold the package.

This photo show me cutting out the CD package net. I was using a craft knife as it is very sharp which means I can easily cut through card.

These photos show the hologram materials I used for my ticket. One of the photos shows tickets that have this material on them. The holograms are used for safety and forgery purposes which means that it is harder to forge a fake ticket to use.

This photo shows me trying to size up the amount of card needed to back my point of sales stand. I needed to make sure that the card I was using to back my products was the correct size. I backed my products to enhance the strength and durability of the product.

These are the photos of all my finished products. I am very happy with all my products as they look how I wanted them to. I think the colour scheme on my products work really well and link in with the band name. My favourite products are my tickets as I think they look like they have been professionally made.
