Target Market The type of person who is most likely to be the typical customer is someone who is fairly young, enjoys loud, wild music and is unique. The age range of the customer who will be buying the products is around 11-40, because the genre is aimed at people of these generations. Older people would probably not listen to this type of music and find it too loud or wild. People under 11 will probably listen to a different type of music. Gender is not specific for this product. This music is from countries like the USA and UK. It would be played mainly at concerts. The most likely occupation for someone who likes this music genre is to be in a band, since they are most likely interested in the music industry. The general likes of the customer would be stuff like loud punk and rock music, guitars, concerts and bands. The general dislikes would be things like pop music (mainstreamed music), latest fashions and politics, because punk music originated from protesting against politics. A typical customer would want the product I design and manufacture to be appealing and relate to what the school band will sound like and what genre of music they are portraying. My product will be more suitable to potential customers than competitors, because it will show the genre of music and appeal to the right customer. The most common design requirements shared by the potential customers are that it will be eye-catching and stand out against the other products. Potential customers are most likely to consider that the genre of music is the one that suits them and the album artwork is something unique that they will remember, before purchasing the product. My customers value the quality, the value for money and the appealing design of the product from my company. Customers will find out the product I’m selling through advertising using posters, magazines, social-networks and previous sold products. Previous customers think my products are good quality, good value for money, nice design, fits the genre and are appealing. The cost will influence a customers decision to buy the product if it’s cheap compared to it’s competitors, but if the school band produce good music and my design is appealing, cost won’t matter as much. Contact can be made with potential customers through telephone, fax, email, social-networking and postal.
CONTEXT Promotion is important for a new product or an event. Design Task 5 A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for their future events. The set must include a CD Case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CDs. Promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material.

Customer Profile Hi, I’m Rheans. I am 14 years old and I like to listen to punk rock . I live in an area, but go to HMV regularly to buy CDs. My favourite band is Green Day . I go to Ki School and I frequently go to concerts with my friends. When I go grow up I want to be in the music industry. I like posters of bands, read kerrang and wear band merchandise. I dislike pop music and don’t follow latest fashions. I would like a product that is unique and rock/punk music.

I’m going to be giving my opinion throughout this PowerPoint. What I learnt from this page: I learnt exactly who my target customer is and how I can make a product that will appeal and suit to their needs. This will help me make sure the colour combination, style and look to my product is suitable for my audience.
The function of this is to advertise the band to potential customers.
This will be made out of cardboard. Research Plan I plan to use this information to analyse existing products like band posters and CD packages using ACCEES FM to find out how I can improve my products and make sure they will attract customers and have the correct function etc. I also plan to disassemble an existing graphic product so I can see how to put my product together well. I will also make a moodboard and image board to give me lots of ideas for how I can design my product and create the logo designs.
This needs to be eye catching to my customer client which is both genders aged 11-40 who like punk/rock music.
What I learnt from this page: I learnt what the band can do for publicity. This will help to show me what type if things I should design to publicize the school band. I learnt that logos are very important and everything needs to fit the genre in order to promote.
Aesthetics: The colours on the poster go nicely together, the bright colours stand out from the black and white colours. It’s eye-catching because it’s busy and the band logo is very big and bold, directing attention to there. It’s got a youthful feel to it and fits in well with the ‘school band’ theme, because it looks very handmade with all the doodles and the fact that the background is a notebook. The logo design for the band is simple, but very effective since it’s bold and stands out against the other band logos and pictures, the little picture (the skull & cross bones) fits in with the style. The various fonts around the poster are all very different, but still fit around the handmade type theme of the poster, because they all seem to look as if they have been handwritten. There is a surface decoration of the band stands out too, making the poster more interesting. The poster is unique from other posters, because it has a consistent style of a notebook. This poster also looks quite busy and wild which reflects the genre of music. Client: The target market for this product is probably teenagers and young adults, from ages around 12- 35. This is because the poster looks quite modern and naïve. Gender isn’t too specific, but it would appeal to girls more because of the colours and pictures. Cost: To print about 50 posters it would cost around £30, because this product is digitally printed and requires a lot of colour. If the poster had less colours or was screen printed, it would be a lot cheaper to print. If it had more colour than it already does, it would be even more expensive. Environment: Although paper is recyclable which is good for the environment, if the poster were to be printed using an inkjet printer, the paper wouldn‘t be able to be recycled because it is almost impossible to separate the ink from the paper. The product uses the least paper possible and can most likely be reused. Ergonomics: This product is easy to use (look at) since it’s appealing and the font is bold and interesting. The product suits the user, because it matches the genre of music and will attract the right customers. The customer will use this product to find out information about the band, such as: tour dates, websites, bands touring with the band and other important information. The poster is the appropriate shape, because it’s the average poster shape, the right weight and also the right size because it will be big enough for people to notice and read. Safety: The product is very safe since it’s only a poster, the only real concern is the fact that you could possibly get paper cuts or hurt yourself while putting it up. The poster is very simple, so it doesn‘t have any loose components. Size: This poster is a rectangular shape. The poster is approximately 29.7cm by 42cm, which is an A3 size paper. If the product was smaller, it wouldn‘t be as noticeable and clear. Function: The function of this poster is to attract the target customers attention, provide information about the What I learnt from this page: band, suit the genre of music and stand out amongst other posters. It’s purpose is to be stuck to walls where I learnt how to analyze an existing poster potential customers will notice it. It does it’s jobs properly because it appeals to the right customers, suits the in order to make mine as good as punk music genre, stands out and is bold. possible. I learnt that the aesthetics of a Materials: This product is made out of paper, and ink, using the computer and printer. The product would have poster are very important if I want it to do been digitally printed, because it contains many different colours. Different areas of the product use different colour it’s job properly. The material will also be ink. Some posters contain a thin plastic protective layer.
an important quality since it needs to last.
Aesthetics: The different shades of green and black blend together well and go together nicely. This theme works out well for ‘The Blackout’ because they are a unique punk rock band and the CD package portrays this. The Bright lime-green and the yellow font colour stand out because they are bright, this makes it eye-catching. On the inside of the four-fold CD the various pictures are all unique and stand out against each other. Song lyrics are written on the inside promoting the bands songs. This product has very punk, supernatural feel to it which will appeal to right audience. The darkness of it also displays the bands name: ‘The Blackout’ because it looks like a blackout. Throughout the package it sticks to the same unusual theme. Attention is drawn to the beam of light coming from the sky because of the contrast of the bright green colour. The logo design for the band is very simple, effective because it matches with their style and the package. The album name is also written in the same font as the bands logo making it look more professional. The actual CD also sticks to the theme and works well with the packaging. There is surface decoration at the bottom of the cover where it’s darker creating a 3D landscape effect. All together the product looks as if it’s been painted by someone and has a bit of a handmade feel to it, so it works well with the ‘school band’ idea of the project. Client: The target market for this product is teenagers and young adults. Ages around 13-40. This is because the type of music ‘punk rock’ is normally for the younger, more rebellious generation and the cover displays that type of feel. Old people will not like this product. Gender would not be specific, because this type of music is for both genders although the cover has a more boy type look. Cost: This product cost exactly £8.98. This product cost approximately £4 to make. If this packaging was more simple and had less colours or if it was screen printed it would cost a lot less to make because of ink costs. If it was more complicated, it would cost more. When manufacturing, they save money by using the same die cutter to cut out all the packaging. Environment: This product is made completely out of recyclable products, making it very good for the environment. This product can also be reused. To make this product even more environmentally friendly, you could use less card. Ergonomics: This product is very easy to use as it opens easily and it’s easy to get the CD out. It is also easy to look at for people who like this genre of music. The product suits the user because it matches the genre and style of music and will attract the correct target customers. The customer uses the product to listen to the band’s music. It is the appropriate size, shape and weight because it’s the same as most CD’s except it’s lighter. Safety: This product is very safe since it’s only a CD and package. It’s also safe for children to use. The corners are not sharp, they are rounded so you can’t hurt yourself. The only possible caution is that if the plastic holding the CD in place breaks, it could become sharp. The only loose component is the CD, but that’s very safe. Size: The size of this product is 12.5 by 14cm. This is a suitable size since most CDs are this size. If it was bigger, it would cost more. Function: This product’s function is to allow the customer to listen to the band’s music and be a novelty to the user. The packaging’s function is to attract the correct customer and hold the CD in place. Material: The product is made out of mainly cardboard, but the CD and the CD holder are made out of recyclable plastic because cardboard would not be able to hold the CD properly and the CD has to be made out of plastic in order for it to work. Using a computer and printer, ink is also used. The product is fixed together using little amounts of glue.
Photography by me. What I learnt from this page: I learnt how to analyze and existing CD and CD package in order to make my product good. I learnt that colour combination and logos are very important as well as the ergonomics of a product. I will use this information for my product.
The hole in the box lets you see the product through it, so you can get a visual idea of the product. The flaps or folds at the top of the box are not stuck down with any glue allowing you to open it. The barcode is on the bottom of the box so that it is partially hidden. The logo, picture and product name are all on the front of the box so the customer can clearly see information about the product. The window is also on the front so you can see through it well. The flaps are white otherwise it would be a waste of ink since they aren’t visible, but there are parts of colour on the side in case that it becomes visible when it’s glued. Very little glue is used on the flaps to save money. On the back and sides of the box it has the ingredients because it’s not as important. A recycling sign and the green dot symbol are on the back of the product, because when the customer wants to see if it’s recyclable they will look there first. The inside of the net has no colour because it would be a waste since it’s not visible to the customer. The net is cut out using a die cutter which cuts the net out accurately. The flaps are glued to the inside of the box so they are not visible and look neat. There is no information on the inside because the customer would not look here for it. The net is made out of cardboard because it’s cheap and environmentally friendly since it is recyclable. The size of this product is 146mm by 164mm. All the company’s products have the same net which means the will all use the same die cutter shape. This saves a lot of money. Ink is printed onto the card before it is cut out. This four fold CD is made from card which is recyclable the card has been folded to make little flaps to hold the CDs. This glue tabs are folded inwards and aren’t visible so it doesn’t look messy. The CD name, artist name and pictures are on the front to advertise the product and make it appealing to the target audience. The song list, bar code and record label are on the back, because that’s where people would look for them. The size of this product is 141mm by 125mm. Card was chosen for this product because it is cheap, easy to print on and recyclable. The pictures are mainly on the cover because that’s where people will first look at the CD, to appeal to them. The same die cutter was used to cut out all of these CD packages to save money.
Photography by me. Behind the CD it is just plain white because this is not visible to the customer and would be a waste of money for it to be coloured in. The biggest and brightest fonts are on the front cover again to attract attention. When the flaps are glued down, they use very little glue in order to save money. They have also not used much ink on this which saves even more money. There are a couple of tracks on the front cover to advertise what type of music will be on the CD. On the side of the CD, it has the name and a little logo, this is important so that when the CD in on it’s side you can still see what it is.
This is a die cutter.
What I learnt from this page: I learnt how to disassemble existing graphic product and what information and colour should go where on a product. This will help me design my product making sure the information and colour is in necessary places.
The centre image is a simple hand drawn image this makes it sand out and be unique. The images are relevant for the music genre and could be used to make different logo designs.
What I learnt from this page: I learnt the different effects logos and other pictures give and gathered some ideas of what I could do for the logo for my band and what colours and shapes it could be. It also showed me the main colours used in this music.
Photography by me. What I learnt from this page: I learnt what successful bands posters, tickets and album artwork looks like. This will help me get ideas for what mine should look like. It also helped me see how logos and other imagery can be positioned in order for the layout to appeal to my particular genre.
PRIMARY COLOURS: These are the 3 main most basic colours which are the starting point of all colours and are combined together in various combinations to make other colours. The primary colours are: red yellow and blue. SECONDARY COLOURS: These are made by combining 2 different primary colours together. The secondary colours are green, orange and purple/violet. TERTIARY COLOURS: These are the result of mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour. There are six tertiary colors; red-orange, yellow-orange, yellowgreen, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet. The two colours used to make the tertiary colour are always next to it on the colour wheel. HARMONISING COLOURS: These are right beside each other on the colour wheel (e.g. red and orange.) The harmonizing colors usually have similar colours in them, so they have closely related hues. If a colour scheme is harmonious it can show peace. COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS: These are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel. (e.g. Purple/violet and yellow.) If 2 colours are complementary, when they get mixed together they will make a neutral colour. They have a high contrast so when used at full saturation it looks vibrant. They can be used to make something stand out.
White: Perfection, cleanliness, snow, successfulness, angels, faith, beginning, innocence, purity, safety and goodness. Black: Darkness, elegance, death, mystery, power, evil, night, respect, strength, authority, silence, unknown, fear and formality. Purple: Faith, luxury, dreams, supernatural, powerful, wealth, good judgement, meditation, splendour, mystery, magic, gloom and wisdom. Pink: Girly, feminine, popularity, glamour, healthy, calmness, cuteness, dawn, awareness, beauty, flowers and love. Blue: Relax, sky, cool, peace, sea, chilled, cold, masculine, confidence, depth, softness, health, loyalty, trust, strength and authority. Green: Environment, natural, health, spring, hope, growth, envy, safety, luck, soothing, relaxing, harmony, fresh and neutral. Red: Hot, blood, love, heat, energy, anger, courage, passion, fire, beauty, happiness, confident, determined and attention. Orange: Autumn, desire, fire, optimism, compassion, endurance, cheerful, independent, creative, flamboyant and traditional.
I think that the 3rd font is the best as it goes with your theme. Also I think you should carry this font and colours forward.
Yellow: Sun, caution, warning, curiosity, warmth, summer, cheerful, freshness, danger, enlightenment and creative.
I chose these fonts and colours because I think they suit the genre of music and would attract customers of that genre. I think I am most likely to carry the 3rd, 4th and 5th fonts and colours forward, because those ones genuinely look the best.
What I learnt from this page: I learnt what all the different colours mean, represent and which ones look good with each other. I also decided on fonts that go nicely with these colours. The fonts and typography will help me design my logos.

Where in my product?
Grey Card
It looks a lot better than cardboard and it’s stronger than normal paper, so it will last longer.
Card is not waterproof, unless laminated and it could rip.
The only real concern is getting a paper cut.
I will use this for my poster, ticket and main product; the four fold CD.
Vinyl
It comes in a range of colours and styles and makes the product more attractive.
It could peel off or be easily damaged and it’s and it’s very expensive.
You will have to be careful when cutting it out.
This will be used on the four fold CD and possibly the POS stand.
Laminate
It makes the product shiny, waterproof and protects the product.
If you don’t have a laminator it would be hard to do and they’re expensive.
The laminator is hot, so you have to be careful not to burn yourself.
I could laminate my poster so it will last longer.
Hologram
It’s a MODERN material and will give an interesting effect. It will also make it look more realistic.
Sticking it on might look bad. There’s few places to put it.
There is no real concern apart from paper cuts from the sheet of them.
I will use it on the ticket to make it look more realistic.

Where in my product?
Craft knife/scalpel
It cuts out very accurately and is good for scoring.
They can be hard to use and control when cutting out.
You have to be careful not to cut yourself.
I will use it to cut all the materials.
Safety Ruler
Makes sure you get straight lines, simple to use.
It can be heavy compared to normal rulers and could scrape something .
It has ridges on top of it so when you hold it, you won’t get in the way when cutting.
I will use it with the craft knife and also to measure my products.
Cutting Mat
It stops the desk from getting scratched and damaged.
I don’t think there are any disadvantages to this product.
Make sure you don’t cut yourself.
I will use it to cut things on, so it won’t damage the table.
Glue Stick
It’s very easy to use, easier than most adhesive products and neat.
It doesn’t always stick properly, it’s messy.
When using it, you shouldn’t breath in the fumes.
I will use it to stick things together.
Computer & Software
Software like Photoshop lets you do quite a lot of graphical aspects.
You’re quite limited to what you do.
It’s bad for your eye-sight, so you should take a rest every hour from it.
To do my presentation.
What I learnt from this page: From this, I learnt the safety of using some of these tools and materials and also some of the things I should avoid when using them. I also decided where in my product I will use them, so I know for future.
Ethical: These involve what’s considered right and wrong. You have to make sure the product doesn’t offend anyone and isn’t ‘unethical.’ If it is unethical, this could mean that it isn’t commercially viable. So I must not contain any content in my product (e.g. religious symbols) that people might find offensive to them or other people. My product should be suitable for people of all cultures and beliefs. Environmental: This is making sure your product is environmentally friendly. You have to make sure your product is made out of recourses that are recyclable or reusable. I need to make sure my product is made out of something like cardboard which is good for the environment. People who buy the product might also consider this and it could impact whether they buy the product or not. My finished product, should be completely recyclable since I will only use card and recyclable plastic. Sustainability: This makes sure that something stays the same over a large amount of time, like making sure there’s still trees after we use them to get cardboard, so we have to plant more. The card I use for my product will be from a sustainable source where they re-plant trees. Companies like ‘Andrex’ make sure that they replant trees to make their company more sustainable. Fair Trade: When you purchase Fair trade products the money goes to help developing countries like parts in Africa. I should try and use materials for my product that are from a company like Fair trade if available. This may be a challenge though because I am limited with resources that are supplied. Carbon Footprint: This is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions given off my a single company, product or event. Companies could lower their carbon footprints by using less material that pollutes and recycling their products more. I should try using materials from a company that has a low carbon footprint. Green Designs: This is a product with environmental features. An example of this is a calculator which has a solar panel instead of batteries. This not only saves the user’s money, but also uses energy which is available and not being used making it more environmentally friendly. Recycling: This reuses the materials the product is made from and prevents it going to waste or causing pollution. My product should be recyclable and could have a recycling logo on it, so people remember to recycle it. The majority of my products should be able to be recycled. For example plastic from the CDs could be recycled to make something like pens. Reclaimed Materials: These are materials that have already been used once and have been recycled to use again. I could use these in my products to encourage people to buy it and it would also be cheaper to make. If possible, I will use these materials to make my products as they are cheap which means higher profit and also good for the environment. Thermosoftening plastic could be used to hold my CDs in place since this is plastic that can be melted and reused. What I learnt from this page: From this page I learnt that I need to Wastage: Some products end up going in the waste instead of being recycled or reused so it’s make my products environmentally monitored to make sure this does not happen. It wastes a lot of energy and ruins the environment friendly, because this could actually effect even more is it gets wasted. I need to use the recyclable symbol on my products so that there is the customers decision to buy it or not. I more chance of it not being wasted. will need to include some of these symbols on my finished product.
Aesthetics The product will be colours like red, black, white or a light blue because these are common colours found on punk albums. The logo will be unique and different from normal logos since it is a unique genre of music, this will attract customers of the genre. The typography will be bold and dramatic.
Materials The poster will be made out of card as well as the four fold CD cover because these materials are suitable since it will look good and is good for the environment. The poster or ticket might need to be laminated to be made waterproof.
Cost The product including the poster and four fold CD will cost around £4 maximum to make approximately. It will sell for around £8 at a minimum. The cost is suitable for the target market since this is the average cost of this type of album.
Durability The construction of the product will make it fairly long lasting, but since it’s card it could get ruined. Although the laminate will make the ticket slightly more hard wearing. The product will be handled quite often by the owner if they read the lyric booklet etc.
Instructions The four fold CD will have a booklet inside that has the lyrics, song names, members of the band, – to promote them – info. about the record company (institution) and the band, people who helped create the album, dedication and thanks and info. about how else you can find out about the band. (e.g. new albums.)
Testing The only way I could test my product is to see if the CD fits well in the cover and see if the products look attractive.
Timescale The project will take around 45 hours and is split into 5 sections. The deadline for this project is December 2013.
Target Market The client is people around the ages of 11-40, since the music is based around these generations. People who live in the UK or USA and genuinely people who are unique and enjoy loud, wild music.
Ergonomics The shape of the product will be light and easy and comfortable to pick up without hurting yourself.
Function The four fold CD cover will be used to hold the CD and protect it. The poster and wristband has the function of publicizing the band to attract more potential customers. Size & Weight The size of the four fold CD package will be around 13cm by 14cm. The poster will be the size of average posters. This will suit the target market because they may want to put the poster up on their wall. The products will be light weight so it’s easier to hold.
Issues I won’t copy existing punk bands – copyright. All the content such as the lyrics and imagery has to be ethically correct.
Environmental Issues My product will be mostly recyclable since it’s mainly made from card. I could even use a reclaimed material for it, if available. The product should also include a sign to show it’s recyclable to encourage people.
Safety The product won’t be flammable and it will not have any sharp edges or loose parts, the only label it may have to warn people is ‘parental advisory’ seeing as that’s general with punk music.
What I learnt from this page: I learnt what direction I will be heading in with my CD design and what my design work might include. I now have an idea of what colours and features I will include on my products, such as a lyric book. From the issues part, I learnt that I mustn‘t copy existing things because of copyright and I learnt what material is suitable to make it from.
I liked the way the banner wrapped round the anchor giving it a 3D effect. I used the colour burn tool on Photoshop to add shadow and warped the typography so it would fit.
The silhouette of the wolf howling could be an effective logo because it can relate to the band name. I positioned the wolf so it looked like it was part of the typography.
The flower which I put underneath this logo looked really good with writing on it, it would also look great with most (album) backgrounds. I used a gradient on the flower which made it look more professional.
I think this logo can relate to the genre of music since it’s unique. I warped the logo so it followed the shape of the eye and created a clipping mask for the colour part.
This logo design was based on an actual example of a band’s logo of the same genre. I think it’s an interesting logo that really stands out. I used burn tool and clipping mask for this.
Although this is a simple design I think as a logo it would look great because it will look good with writing and since it’s simple it will blend in well. I tried to make it interact with the typography.
What I learnt from this page: Using the fonts and colours from my typography page I learned which styles would look good with my logos. I realized that the position of the font was very important in order for it to stand out. I learnt some Photoshop techniques to make the logo appear professional.
1.
4.
The shading on this logo which I did using ‘colour burn’ gives it a 3D effect. Although the colours are simple and plain, I think this logo is easy to remember and would work well with the genre.
2.
Using some colours 5. from the colour typography page, I made a gradient. I think the colours blend nicely and give it a nice tone. I think these colours reflect the genre nicely and help make the logo altogether more eyecatching.
I changed the ‘curves’ and ‘levels’ to give it a darker effect. I think this logo would work well on a light background. By making it darker, it seems to stand out more.
I changed the ‘curves’ and ‘levels’ again and also the position of the typography. I think this logo looks a bit too dull, but experimenting with the position helped me decide that the typography was in a suitable position before.
3.
6.
I created a clipping mask with a pattern. I think this makes the logo easy on the eye, but might be too excessive. The pattern on the anchor could be too distracting from the typography.
This is another clipping mask. The pattern this time appeals more to the genre, but is still quite distracting. Since the colours throughout this logo are fairly simple, I think it make it look professional. What I learnt from this page: On this page, I learnt how simple changes in Photoshop can have a massive impact on the way the logo appears. I also learnt some things which are important for logo designing; such as quality of the imagery, position of the typography and colours.
7.
8.
9.
On this logo I tried to create an effect of the birds coming from the typography. I think this logo could be effective since it’s simple and would work well with any background. I used the Invert tool to change the colour of the birds.
10.
This time I changed the colour balance and added a gradient using different colours from my colour typography page. I think this purple would look nice on a dark background and the colour would work well for the genre.
I changed the colour balance and gave it a gradient. The colours used are from my colour typography page. This made the logo more eyecatching, and more appealing.
11.
On this logo the bottom now has a longer black part. I did this by transforming the original shape. I think this makes the logo stand out more. It also makes it look more professional and brings it together.
On this logo I used the shape tool to add lines. I think this made it stand out more, but also makes the logo look a bit overcrowded.
12.
I made the bottom word smaller to add hierarchy and also swapped the side it’s at. I think this looks good, but draws too much attention to the left side. What I learnt from this page: I leant from this page that the size of the logo and design is very important in order for the logo to be professional and have the right hierarchy. I also learnt that the colours on a logo can make it more eyecatching and appealing.
13.
14.
This logo was done with a gradient. The typography I chose looks like it goes well with the design. I think this logo is interesting and appealing since it’s quite a complicated design.
16.
I changed the colour balance so that it would match the purple colours from the colour typography page. This makes the logo look simpler. By changing the typography I think it made the design stand out more, by makes the typography too insignificant.
17.
I redid the gradients so that they would just go round the edges. I think the pastel colours make it better to look at and the new typography fits in well. This logo would look good on a dark background since the colours are light.
15.
By repositioning the typography and making bigger, it made the logo look more like a professional logo. It also made the name of the band more significant through hierarchy.
18.
I added the gradient, but this time got rid of the outline after. This makes it look way more professional than the others. The colours I chose for the typography also makes it blend in well. Replacing it as one of the letters makes it interact with the typography. I also used similar colours from the typography page.
On this logo, I also got rid of the outlines, but made it slightly bigger by transforming it. I think by changing the colour, it seems to contrast more. What I learnt from this page: I learnt that making the design look good with the typography is one of the most important things when designing a logo. The typography has to look like it matches the design. This page also helped me think about what logos would look good on different backgrounds for when I design the actual album, posters etc.

My best logo was idea 2, which got a score of 46 out of 50. I think this is quite a good logo since it looks professional because of how simple it is and the colours are also a simple colour scheme, working well together. You can also read the typography really easy. It’s also easy to imagine it on an album cover due to the fact that it’s such a simple design, similar to other band’s logos of the same genre. Logo 2 and 5 got the second highest scores, I like logo 1 because I think it’s a really unique design and is quite interesting, but I think on the products it may not look like a logo since the typography is quite small. In logo 5, the imagery interacts with the typography giving an interesting effect, personally this would be my seconds choice of logo. I like the colour gradient in the 4th idea, but as with logo 1, I can’t imagine it as a logo on the album because there isn’t much enfaces on the typography which is meant to be bold, so it can be noticeable. Although logo 3 looks quite simple and 6 has an interesting design, I wouldn’t use them for my final logo. I decided to carry logo 2 forward when designing my product.

What I learnt from this page: This page helped me to decide which logos would look professional to use for my actual design. It also got the opinions of other people to see the preference of potential customers . It helped me see which colour schemes and designs they like.
CD Package: A successful CD package has a colour scheme which matches the logo and is attractive to the target customer. The actual CD and back cover have to be similar colours to match it. The CD and front cover should include the band name (in bold so it’s easy to see), logo and album name. The back cover should have the track names and numbers (in a fairly small font), bar code, record company and price. Poster: A poster which is successful needs to have the band name in a large font to show hierarchy, a similar pattern to their album cover, the tour dates in a smaller font, support acts and ways of contact – websites. The poster also needs to be bright colours to make it eye-catching. Ticket: For a ticket to be successful, it needs to have the band logo, the location and times, barcode, cost, support acts and tour name. Some tickets even have a map to help guide you to the arena. Point Of Sales Stand: This needs to match the package it will hold, meaning it will have to have similar patterns. It will have to include the band name, logo, album name and will need an eyecatching design. CD booklet: This also needs a similar pattern to the album cover, but with more designs across it. It has to have the band name, logo, album name, record label and could have other relevant information about the band and websites.
Point of sales stand
What I learnt from this page: I learnt what I need to include on each product. For example, I need to include the band logo and name on everything. I need to make sure that all of the products made are visually similar, so that you can tell they are for the same band.
This was my first idea. The yellow part of the net folds up and the flaps are glued down to create a pocket to hold a booklet, the orange triangle folds up and the net can be folded in on either side creating a normal size CD package. There will be imagery on all the folds and when the customer lifts up the triangle there would be more imagery – this makes the product interesting. This net has a total of 5 fold on it. I like this idea since it’s not too complicated and is very good for it’s function since it’s easy on the eye.
Appearance wise, I decided that it would look better in as 5 fold with 4 boxes in a row. This design has two pieces which fold up to where the CD would be held. These pieces have a more interesting shape and would therefore be more eye-catching although harder to cut out in the making process. The side fold in the middle is clearly larger than the rest since this is the main spine fold. I don’t this net would work best for my CD because the edges of the triangle look too fancy and don’t seem to suit the genre.
This net has a very similar structure to the previous however instead of a triangle it has a square which would cover the whole image and have little parts showing through the triangles which would be cut out. This decoration makes the package very unique and again visually interesting. In this net, the part that holds the booklet is decreased in size from the previous idea meaning more of the booklet would be seen. I think this idea would attract lots of customers, but the triangles cut out could mean the card its on looses strength and quality.
This is my final design which I will carry further to make. It includes the fold that gets glued to hold a booklet, two CDs which will go on the middle two boxes and there will be imagery on the right side box meaning the two triangles will cover it when they close diagonally. I chose this particular design because it’s fairly simple but also has lots of interesting features. The sketches next to the net show how it folds and looks when fully folded up. This design isn’t too complicated and would work well with the CD making the product interesting and therefore attracting more potential clients.
I decided to try a completely different shape for this idea. Although it would still appear the same when folded up, this design would have two flaps that come down over each CD. It would also fold up a different way than the other two ideas meaning one of the side folds is larger than the other. This design has a total of 6 folds so it again meets the specification. I don’t think this net would work for my CD because it wouldn't be able to hold a booklet and I’m personally not keen on the way it folds.
I agree with the decision to use the last net. I think this one is simple and would be exciting for the particular customer that it’s aimed at.
What I learnt from this page: By drawing these scaled down sketches of some of my ideas for CD packages, I learnt what flaps, features and spines I will need in each place on the net in order for it work. These skills will help me when designing the actual net on 2D design and also when cutting out and folding the actual product.
This was probably the simplest design I did. It was very easy to cut out, but I didn’t chose to continue with this design because I think it could have a more interesting structure. Nevertheless, I liked how this design folded and as you can see in the picture in the top right, the design worked.
As predicted, this design was quite challenging to cut out. The main thing I liked about this design is how interesting the fold with the cut out triangles looked. It gave a nice and interesting effect to the overall design. I’m not going to continue with this design due to the fact that the cut out makes the net weaker and wouldn’t be consistent in manufacture.
This net looked very unique and dynamic when opened out. I found it interesting with all the different flaps you could open which would reveal imagery and the type of symmetry it had. I didn’t continue with this design since I thought it was a bit too complicated and had no place to put a booklet. These are the tools I used when cutting out these nets. The craft knife was for cutting through the card, the cutting mat helped protect the table from being damaged and align everything and finally the safety ruler not only stopped me from cutting myself, but also helped cut straight lines and measure the nets.
This design didn’t function as well as I’d hoped. Although the curved pattern on the edge was quite appealing, the actual design didn’t fold equally. This happened because there was more folds on the right side meaning it was thicker. This made the design loose some of it’s quality and professional look.
This design worked the best by far. It folded equally, looked professional due to it’s simplicity and looked interesting/appealing to the correct genre. Another factor I liked about this design was the process of making it, it was easy to cut out and had a nice finish. This net also has a flap to hold the booklet, again making it more appealing.
What I learnt from this page: By doing this task, I learnt how to use a craft knife, cutting mat and safety ruler. These skills will be put to good use when it comes to the actual make of the product. I have also learnt how to create a functioning net and make sure it is fully working. From using the safety ruler, I have learnt that when using tools such as a craft knife which could harm you it’s important to be cautious.
Ticket (front):
This is the front of the ticket. I made it grey to fit my colour scheme and made the picture I’m putting on desaturated/black and white. I then lowered the opacity in order to make the picture fade slightly. I then used various different sizes of Photoshop brushes to give the effect of paint splatters coming off the picture – to do this I selected a similar colour to the place in the picture I want it to come off with the colour picker. Since this was the ticket, I added; a perforated line for where the ticket would get ripped; the band logo so it’s clear what band the ticket is for; the o2 academy logo since all tickets contain the venue logo; a barcode which is how the ticket would get scanned; the ticketweb logo to show how the ticket was purchased; info. about when and where the event will take place; the band logo and support band to show what it’s for and the price, ticket number and rule about age limits since all tickets contain this information. The band logo is the largest because this is the purpose of the ticket and shows it’s importance. A hologram will later be put on this ticket when making it to show that it’s a real ticket.
Ticket (back):
This is the back of the ticket. I used the same colour grey so both sides match, put in the perforated line and added the other side of the face. I used the same technique as I did for the front and used different brushes to build it up. I also added some blue and pink splatters since these will be frequent colours on most of the products. Again, I added the band’s logo that I designed and the o2 academy logo since these are the two main logos necessary for a ticket. The hopeless records logo shows the record company that this particular band is signed to; this is a way of advertising the record company. ‘Hype’ is the band’s sponsor so the logo was also an important feature on the ticket. I also put 3 social network logos showing a method of contact if needed and again promoting both the band and the academy. The ticket also includes a map and key of the academy to help the customer find their place. It’s the largest component on the ticket because it’s very important that the customer is able to read this. The writing at the side of the ticket is a policy and information, it’s in small print since it isn’t too important.
Poster:
The poster was actually the first product I designed. I started off by making the background a grey which fits in with the genre and then adding the imagery. I used a layer mask to get rid of the background, then changed the levels and curves creating a lighter effect and used desaturate it making it black and white. I used many different brushes which were similar colours to the part on the picture where they were placed and built up all parts of the picture. I changed the colour of the eyes to purple using a brush and the overlay blending option and then did the same to colour the tattoos in. I did this because tattoos are genuinely quite a stereotypical feature in punk rock music – so doing this made them more pronounced. I used the shape tool to make a box and then built up brushes around the box; this is where the tour dates would go. After doing this, I added the logo making sure it was fairly large, bright and easy to read as it would be the first thing the viewer would read. The support act (We Came As Romans) is also an important feature since a potential client would want to know this information and fans of that band who might not have heard of my band would be attracted to this poster. I then added the tour name, sponsor and record company for promotion and the ticket hotline and band webpage for a method of contact if you wanted to get tickets or ask questions. The final thing I added was the tour dates with clear information about location and date. What I learnt from this page: On this page, I learnt important factors which belong on a ticket and a poster and the importance of a hologram (a modern material) to show a ticket is real. I also discovered some new Photoshop techniques such as digital dark room and desaturation. Another thing I learnt from this task is how logos can be a source of advertisement/promotion through sponsoring.
Booklet (outside):
This is the booklet which slips inside the CD package. I made this by giving it the same grey background as all the products and making 3 individual illustrations. For each illustration I used a layer mask to get rid of the background, desaturated it, coloured in a particular part of the image and then added some minor brush strokes. After doing this, I placed them all on the front of the booklet and added a grey box where I put the band name and logo to show that it belongs to that band. On the back of the booklet, I put two paint splat brushes in blue and pink which are the main colours and then added the record company since this is normally found on a CD booklet and is important as it represents the record company and also promotes them. I used the phrase ‘brought to you by Hopeless Records’ because this is a typical phrase that a record company would use. There is a lot of negative (blank) space on the back because this page isn’t that important and it also shows simplicity.
Booklet (inside):
When I made the inside of the booklet, I used the grey background again, but then added a white box to the right side of the booklet and lowered it’s opacity to create and effect of a border. The illustration was done using the same techniques as the rest; a layer mask was used to get rid of the background, the image was desaturated and then brushes coming off the image were added. I then added a pink and blue paint splat brush coming off the image as well to stick to the theme. Just like I did on the front of the booklet, I added a grey box to put information about the band in. I put some basic information I made up about the band into it which would be, in general, interesting for the customer to read. On the other page, I put who the band would like to thank. This is a thing which most bands of the punk rock genre do. I put down general places and things that a band would normally thank (instrument companies, family, fans). I stated who produced the record and music since this is something all bands do. I put a website to order merchandise which would interest the fans, the band logo and record company logo and their websites as a contact method.
Point of sales stand:
For the Point of Sales Stand I knew the design had to be kept fairly simple as there wasn’t a lot of information that is necessary. I used the same design for this as I did for the poster, but instead enlarged the image. I did this due the fact that not much information was needed it meant that the picture had to be the main focus pint and attract the attention. After doing this, I then made the part that fold up to hold the CD package. I did this by cropping the image to appropriate sizing and adding the band name and logo so it was obvious what the stand was for. The overall effect of the stand shows that it’s quite simple but effective.
I printed my design out on normal paper to test it out, luckily it worked. I tried different sizes and cut it out differently for some ideas which will help when it comes to making the actual product.
What IIlearnt this page: What learntfrom from this page: By designing these, I learnt different factors which would be necessary for a booklet and POS stand. I also learnt the importance of layout and size in order to make a product look professional. I also learnt how to use rulers in Photoshop which helped make sure everything was aligned correctly.
Flyer (front): For the front of the flyer, I used the same design again with the brushes and coloured in tattoos. The flyer is slightly smaller than the poster since it’s function isn’t to attract attention from afar, but more to get the customers attention when they are handed it or receive it through their door. I used the same shade of grey for the background again as this is the theme and shows that it clearly belongs to that band. I added the band’s logo in the centre of the poster to display what the flyer is trying to advertise and at the bottom of it added 3 methods of contact (the band’s main website, Facebook and Tumblr pages). This is to make sure that the client know how to contact or look up the band if they wanted more information, to get a CD or even a concert ticket. I kept the front of the flyer quite simple and basic as this is the side that attracts the customers attention and it gives it a nice, neat and professional appearance. Flyer (back): On the other hand, the back of the flyer needed to have the majority of the information on it as it’s purpose is to inform the customer. Again using the same grey background, I added a white box and faded it by lowering the opacity this gave the effect of a border. I kept the imagery to a minimum by just adding a few different size and colour brushes. This kept it simple and also stuck to the theme by using similar colours. band logo was put on this side as well since most flyers would do this to make sure the customer is aware of what the flyer is aimed to advertise which is a form of repetition. The ‘for one night only’ shows that it’s to advertise one particular event as this is what flyers do. I made sure the support band was clearly stated since this is something the customer would want to know. The details of the place and date are also mentioned so all the information that someone may need about the concert is on the flyer. I added something to advertise the band’s new album which is a secondary purpose of the flyer, put the tour name which gives a nice effect and wrote the ticket hotline number so it easy to access tickets. What I learnt from this page: I learnt some typical feature that a flyer may include to get attention, advertise and inform (it’s function). I also learnt how to make sure that a product is consistent and matches by using certain colours and sticking to a particular theme.
CD Package (outside): When it came to making the CD package, the net was designed on illustrator with rulers and the dragged to Photoshop. I started off by putting the same grey I’ve used throughout the products onto each piece that I would use and placed two black diagonal lines to show where I would cut across to make the flaps triangular. I then added the illustrations I’d done previously and made sure the front cover had the main design. All illustration were done using layer mask, desaturation, levels and various brushes. I added the band name, logo, record company and manufacture number down the spine as I noticed that all CD’s have this. On the back, I put the record company and policy, song names and barcode for purchase. The album name and band name were added to the front and a few more brushes throughout the design. On the flap that holds the booklet, I put some lyrics which would entertaining fro the customer and bands often do this.
For the inside of the package the first thing I did was create it on illustrator and then dragged it to Photoshop where I made parts of it grey. I added an illustration that I made using the previous techniques on Photoshop stated before. I added a few simple brushes in pink and blue – the main colours – to where the CDs and booklet would be placed over adding to the unique effect. I added lines again to make sure I knew where to cut when it came to actually making the product. I didn’t add brushes on parts which already had imagery near them because I didn’t want it to look too crowded or overdone.
CDs: I used a template to make the CD ensuring that it the right size. I added the same pink that I have used on the other components then put the band logo, album name and ‘CD 1’ in white. It was important to label the CD with a number so the customer would be able to use the track listings which are on the back of the CD package. I then added a couple of different size, shape and colour brushes sticking to the main colours. This created a simple design that matched. I used the same template again to make sure both CDs were the same size, but this time made it blue the other colour I have used throughout. I added the band logo, album name and this time ‘CD 2’ and then dragged the same imagery from the other design to make sure they clearly matched with each other and the package that they would go in. I like how the CD’s ended up appearing since it is obvious that they are for the same band.
What I learnt from this page: What I learnt from this page: While doing this task, I learnt features that belong on a CD package and the CD itself including logos and info. I also learnt how measurements were very important and had to be accurate if the design was going to work. Another thing I learnt was that changing the position of something could make it appear very different.
2D Design: In order to make my vinyl I used a picture of a paint splash from Google and pasted it into the CADCAM software 2D design. I then used the path tool to roughly sketch round it creating the shape I was going to use. The delete tool was useful to delete any edges which weren’t needed. I then resized the design so that it would be able to fit on my CD package. I placed it near the bottom left edge so that it wouldn’t waste vinyl and not cut through the whole thing. I then used the dimension lines tool to show the sizes of the design. This will then go on to be printed on a piece of coloured vinyl that matches my design by the plotter cutter.
CAD/CAM: CADCAM stands for Computer-Aided Design Computer-Aided Manufacture.
Advantages of CADCAM
Disadvantages of CADCAM
-It’s much more accurate than designs drawn by hand which reduces human error. -Easy and cheap to make modifications. -It reduces the time taken to create the design. -It’s easy to replicate the design. -You can combine designs.
-The software can be expensive. -The staff need to be trained to use the software which adds to the cost. -At the manufacture stage, designing stops. -It’s slower than some traditional methods. -There has to be system engineers to maintain the computers and keep them running.
Embossing: Embossing is known as ‘surface decoration’. It means to decorate the surface with a raised design and it is one of the cheapest ways to enhance the appearance and feel of any surface. The best kind of paper for embossing is long fibered sheets which are heavy. Embossing is bad for the environment since recycled paper is unsuitable for the process and is avoided because paper can become weaker overtime and can no longer stand the pressure of embossing. Overall, embossing is cost effective and very simple meaning it would be good in manufacture. Paper, cloth or metal can be used in embossing and texture is an important role. Lightweight or heavy coated papers are not good because they crack easily. Depending on the thickness, you can easily change the depth and bevel. Thicker materials would give a more dramatic effect because they can push deeper in the embossing machine. Plastics can also embossing. Examples of places where embossing is used are on credit cards and also card packaging. We don’t have the specialist/professional equipment that they use in manufacture, at school so instead I am using vinyl as surface decoration that I will create on 2D design (CADCAM software) to create a similar effect. This will enhance my design giving it a nice feel and appearance. Lamination: Lamination is a technique of manufacturing a material in multiple layers. Laminating genuinely ensures that your product has increased strength, stability and makes the appearance better. My ticket will be laminated at the same time as others in the class so materials aren’t wasted. My ticket will look more realistic because it will be shiny like a real ticket and the overall quality will improve.
This is a plotter cutter. It’s a computer printer used for printing vector graphics using knives on materials such as vinyl or paper. They work with CADCAM software programs such as 2D design.
Smart Material: A smart material is a material which can change it’s properties due to a stimuli – an external condition such as light or temperature. This change is reversible. (e.g. phosphorescent material). I might be using a smart material in my work. Modern Material: A modern material is a material made with new or improves technology/processes to enhance. (e.g. hologram). I will be using a modern material on my ticket. The material I’ll use is a hologram, this will enhance it making it look more professional and also give it realistic qualities. Holograms are often found on credit cards and money, this prevents copies (forgeries) of these things from being made and makes it authentic. Vinyl: Vinyl could be used to enhance my final design. Its is a thin, flexible plastic that comes in many different colours and can be used as a sticker. This is embossing which means to decorate a surface with a raised design and it a cheap way to enhance both the appearance and feel of the surface. The technique is known as surface decoration. The process I am doing to get my design put onto 2D design is vectorise it which makes it better quality for printing, size it exactly so it will print the appropriate size, cut it out using vinyl on the plotter cutter and sticking it where I want it on my design using transfer paper.
Embossing:
Vinyl:
What I learnt from this page: From this page, I learnt about CADCAM software and techniques like embossing which could be used to enhance my work and make it look more professional. I also learnt the difference between a smart and modern material and why they are useful in manufacture. Another thing I learnt was the process of printing a design out with a plotter cutter on vinyl.
To the left is a drawing of my POS stand from two different angles to show the structure of it. It shows the CD box and the triangular structure holding the POS stand upright. Further down is a one point perspective of the inside of my finished CD package, it shows all the folds and where the CDs are placed. Lastly is a hand drawn net of my final CD package with quick sketches so you can see how I laid out the images and other features.
I think Rachel’s overall design is very effective for the genre she chose. It’s very detailed and everything matches. This is my nest that I sent off for printing. Everything is grouped together closely to save money and helps save paper meaning it’s also good for the environment. Grouping it together closely is also known as tessellation. Putting each design this close together should also make it easier to cut out. The nest will be printed on the same piece of paper ensuring that the quality is consistent throughout. The only disadvantage of nesting is it may be time consuming to organise all the designs onto a nest. The printer I will be using at school is 38 inches wide, so I made sure my nest is this wide so the designs take up the least space possible in order to save paper. This is also a suitable size for my designs to make sure it’s printed at a high quality standard. If I didn’t nest my products and they were printed separately there would be a lot of white space and therefore paper and energy wasted.

Here are some of the processes I went through when creating my products. I printed out my nest on card and cut out each design roughly with the scissors. Afterwards, I used the craft knife to cut out the designs more accurately I also used a cutting mat and safety ruler. I stuck the sides of each design to the other side of it and backed the poster, POS stand and CD package. To make the triangle support, I used a thick piece of card and folded it using the safety ruler, craft knife and cutting mat. I used the glue gun to stick the triangle stand onto the POS stand and then used a template to cut out the CD holder onto card which I then also glued with the glue gun onto the POS stand. This ensured that it was strong. However, an issue I had with the glue gun and glue stick was that it was sometimes messy and would often rub off onto my design since my design is quite dark. I stuck CD holders onto my CD package to make it more professional and the CD designs onto actual CDs so they would fit in properly. I laminated the ticket to make it look more realistic and improve the quality of it. Next, I placed the hologram onto the ticket again to make it more realistic. At the end, I corrected any mistakes I had made by sticking things together incorrectly. I did this using the craft knife to straighten edges and attempted to remove any glue which had smudged onto the design.
Design Brief: My products are good for promoting a new product and event since they would stand out against other designs and attract the right target audience because of the colour scheme and imagery used. My products fit the design task because I’ve created a CD package with more then four folds, two CDs inside and relevant information that a CD package would need such as band name and logo, track listing, institution logos (record label) and album name. My ticket has incorporated a modern material on it – a hologram. This enhances the design of it and gives it a more realistic effect. Customer Profile: I have met all the requirements for the customer profile by molding my design around her needs and interests. The fact that the customer would rather buy hard copies of music – CDs – means that the design would have to stand out against the others and be memorable. I have achieved this by creating a very unique design which would fit in with the Punk Rock genre but also stand out. The Punk Rock genre allowed me to use dark colours alongside a few bright colours to get a contrast. The tattoos on my design represent the Punk Rock genre because in general the genre is quite rebellious. The name of my album and band also fit in with the genre since they are very unusual like many other Punk Rock band names. The customer states that she dislikes pop music which is common for people within the punk rock genre, this means I had to make my design clearly different to those of pop music. I achieved this through the colour scheme and imagery.
Target Market: Since the genre often represents youth meaning the customer was more likely going to be a younger person, I had to reflect this in my design. I did this with the imagery. By using images of the young band members it shows that it’s aimed at younger generations, this is because they’d be more interested in the artists themselves as well. The paint splats I used to enhance the images represent how the genre is wild and the toned down colours clearly show that it wouldn’t be aimed at anyone under 11. I have included an image of the guitarist at a concert which links to how the customer will probably be interested in the music industry and attending concerts. The colour scheme of my design illustrates nicely how the band could sound. A very important statement in my target market was to make the design eye-catching and stand out. I feel like I have done this because there are certain are of my design which stand out and the images used are of high quality. The design I created is made out of the cheapest materials possible without lowering the quality of it, meaning there is more value for money especially as the products are likely to be purchased by young people. The customers will be able to find the product through my posters and flyers. These stand out and clearly match with the rest of the design making the band easy to identify. Details of the band are also found throughout my products such as the official website, social networks and ticket hotlines. These all help the customer find out about other products to do with the band and promote the band. For example the official website can be found on the CD package, poster, flyer and booklet. The booklet not only promotes the band, but is also a way of bringing the band closer to the customer meaning more publicity.
I think Rachel has managed to meet the brief well with her overall design and it meets all the customer’s requirements.
What I learnt from this page: From doing this task, I have identified all the features of my design that I have managed to meet the brief and customer’s guidelines with. I’ve learnt how important it is for the products to fit in with what the target audience wants in order for them to be successful.
Aesthetics: I chose not to stick with these colours, but came up with a similar colour scheme of grey, light blue and pink. I did this because they matched my theme better and they’re still colours which are used often in the punk rock genre. My logo of the dark flower is very unique to the genre which would attract customers. The typography I used is very bold and is one of the main focuses of attention. The colour of it also fits into the theme.
Materials: I made most of my products out of card and paper, which are very good for the environment and can be recycled. Instead of laminating the poster I chose to laminate the ticket to make it look more professional and also because it wasn’t necessary to laminate the poster.
Testing: I tested my product to see if the CDs both fit in the cover well. They both managed to fit in perfectly and I also made sure that my products match and look attractive. I think I have also achieved this.
Instructions: On the booklet I created, I made sure I included all the information needed to promote the band and allow the customer to find out more about the band. This also makes the customers more informed about the band and therefore closer to them.
Function: The CD package fulfills it’s function as it holds the Cd well and protects it from getting damaged. The poster as well as the flyer have the purpose of advertising the band to potential customers, it does this well since it had imagery and colour which would appeal to target customers and relevant info. is bold and easy to read.
Cost: I have managed to minimize the cost for the manufacturing of the product by using cheap materials which are still high quality. This mean increased profit and I can sell the product at a cheap appropriate price to the target customer.
Size & Weight: I managed to make my CD package round about this size and the exact size of an actual CD and the poster is A4 which is a usual poster size. The products are both fairly light weight and nice to hold and can be used in many different ways. (e.g. putting the poster on your wall.)
Durability: By laminating the ticket I have increased the durability, but it’s possible that the card could still get ruined if handled too often. However, this wouldn’t be as much of a problem in professional manufacturing since they would be able to stick and finish the product in a way that would make it last longer. Target Market: My final products have met the requirements of the target market due to the design being attractive to people associated with the genre. The design reflects the loud, wild and unique music. Timescale: The original deadline was December 2013. However this deadline was changed to February 2014. I managed to achieve this meaning I reached the deadline on time.
Ergonomics: My product is easy to pick up and comfortable to hold and use. There is also basically no ways in which you could hurt yourself using it.
Safety: The product is overall very safe and the only possible threat is getting a paper cut, but this can be easily avoided and isn’t something the target age group would worry about. Despite this, I have tried to make the edges as safe as possible on all my products. Environmental Issues: My products were all made out of card and paper meaning they are fully recyclable. A reclaimed material was not available due to the restrictions of the school. Although if the product was manufactured professionally, this could be easy to obtain and use making the product even better for the environment.
Issues: I didn’t copy any existing punk bands with my design and therefore didn’t go against any copyright rules. The images and imagery are both ethically correct meaning I have no issues with my design at all and it would be able to go ahead with manufacture of it.
What I learnt from this page: I found out from doing this that my design appears to meet the design specification I set myself. This means that the product would be able to be manufactured and sold without restrictions and would also attract the right target audience.
To obtain different opinions on my product I created a survey asking only people who fit the customer profile. So everyone I asked was a fan of the punk rock genre and in the age group of 11-40. I did this to make sure that I get appropriate opinions from people who are potential customers. I asked 4 people in total and used this table to feedback. As you can see most of the feedback I received was positive showing that my target market genuinely likes my designs.

Opinion 1 – Zoe Fisk: I think the colour scheme suits the genre since it involves colours that you would see constantly in that genre, but it also has unique aspects. The typography matches the design, but an improvement would be to make the band name font more like the genre. This is not a problem though as it looks good with the theme and it’s still easy to identify the genre of the design. The net design is easy to use and unique meaning it’s more interesting. The logo is unique and links to the genre, it also matches the design because of the colours. As someone who would be in the target audience, this design would appeal to me. The quality of all the images and layout is very high and they look they could have been produced professionally. Most of the materials are suitable, but the poster and flyer could have been made shiny like others. This was probably hard though because of the available resources. I would buy this product. Opinion 2 – Rachel Jackson: The colours are suitable because dark colours would normally be used to represent rock music. I do like the typography though the writing may not fit the genre/style of music. The product looks high quality and professional, as it is not distorted and the pictures suit the music type. The overall product is definitely something people would buy in the shops or consider the product even if they did not listen to that genre, as the colour contrast creates an eye catching effect.
Opinion 3 - Emily Forster: I think that the final product that Rachel has created definitely fits the part of a rock cd. I especially love her original idea of the colour smudges that she developed early on in the project! The band member that models the front matches the genre with the tattoos especially. The dark colour scheme that you would generally associate with a rock, punk, metal genre is consistent throughout and looks great.
Opinion 4 – Daniel Kramer: Great lay out, clear and informative. The colour scheme is perfect subtle or understated but stills catches the eye. I don’t think there is any doubt that hard work has produced a professional product that would be easily marketable to the target audience. My Opinion: I am very happy with how my product turned out. I think the colour scheme and typography is suitable for the genre because you can tell by looking at the product what the genre of the music is. I think I managed to create a high quality product which the target audience would find attractive. I think I could improve my overall product by correcting the edges with a craft knife. If I saw my product in the shop, I would probably be interested in buying it.
What I learnt from this page: By gathering opinions, I found out what different people think of my design and any improvements I could make to it. It also helped me decide if my product would do well on the shelf and if it fits the target market.
Modifications: Some improvements I would make to my design if I made my product again would be to maybe use a lighter colour scheme or use something to protect the dark colours as they were easily scratched and glue marks showed up easily on black and grey. This lowered the quality of my overall design a bit so it didn’t look as professional as it could of. Another problem that I faced was that the glue wasn’t very strong and the pieces often didn’t stick well. This wouldn’t be a problem in industry though because they would have a glue which has more strength. It was hard not to get glue on parts of the design meaning there was often marks on it, so next time I would take more time to glue the designs to make sure that the glue doesn’t smudge and I can spend more time making my design higher quality. A challenge I faced was sticking the sides of things together accurately, if I were to do this again I could use a printer that prints double sided or spend more time aligning them. This would improve my flyer, booklet, CD package and also ticket. Overall I like my piece of work and I think I managed to achieve a good design which meets all my guidelines well. The quality of print was high and this helped as the images were good quality. The only drawback of this was the fact that because dark colours were used, they sometimes smudged. The materials used are mostly durable and appropriate especially with the minimal resources I had. In conclusion, I think my design looks like a real CD package and could be sold in shops alongside ones of similar genres. The card we used for the POS stand support bended a bit due to the conditions it was stored in and the material used for the CD package meant that the more you used the product, the weaker it got. An improvement would be to increase the quality and strength of the materials used. One-off Production: This is what I have done in this project. It’s when only one product is made at a time, this means every product is different and they could be handmade or a combination of making it by hand and machine. It’s labour intensive. Batch Production: This is when small quantities of identical products are made and can be made as often as possible. The machines used in the process can be easily altered to produce a different product. A downside is this process may be slow. Mass Production: This is when hundreds of products – usually on a production line – are made. This sometimes involves the assembly of a number of sub-assemblies of individual components. This requires few workers as machines would probably do most of the work. This is a fast process. Continuous Flow: When thousand of products are made, it’s called Continuous Flow. This differs from mass production since the production line is kept running 24-7. Advantages of this are it gets rid of any costs there would be to stop production processes and maximize production all together. Few workers are also required for this as it’s mainly machinery. This would be a process that big companies like ‘Coke’ use. Commercially Viable: This is a companies ability to succeed and be profitable. I think my product could be made without too many modifications into commercial production because I personally think it already looks fairly professional. Commercial production is putting your products out there for sale on the market. It would have to have commercial value for this to happen. The product I have made is a one of product since it was basically just a prototype. It would be easy to make my product commercially viable because the net is simple and you can easily make a die cutter to produce it in industry.
What I learnt from this page: I have learnt the different methods involved in manufacturing and why certain companies may choice to use certain production methods depending on how much product they need to reach demand. I also learnt the requirements a product needs to be commercially viable.
These images show my final designs. I have met the specification and they are suitable for the customer profile. The designs also all match, they’re unique and suit the punk rock genre.
