Design Task 5 A group of students in your school have formed a band and want a complete set of publicity material for their future events. The set must include a CD Case which has a minimum of four folding panels containing any number of CD’s and relevant information. The panels can fold in any direction and could hold a combination of CDs. Promotional material should also contain an item which incorporates a smart or modern material.

Any customer would want a durable, safe, exciting CD case. To introduce more potential customers to the group, I will be creating promotional material. This will be a poster, a flyer, a Point of Sale stand and a CD package for the band. Customers will be attracted to bold, unique, colourful CD packages. This draws customers toward buying the product. The type of customer who would listen to the band would be teenagers and younger adults around the age of 14-25. The target customer is likely to be any gender as electric music is usually a mixed type of music. Customers are likely to live in large, highly populated urban areas. The customers will probably be in a range of different jobs. Their occupation does not depend on what type of music they enjoy. New customers will consider whether they enjoy the genre of music though having an attractive CD package will enhance their opinion. To make my product more interesting and appealing to the customer there could be an inside information pack on the band as well as a more interesting designed CD package. The costumer will like “chilled out” electric music or louder, faster electric music. There could be a mixture to satisfy all customers. To link the genre to the band I will use colours from my mood board to incorporate onto my CD package. I think that because this generation has grown up with the internet, downloading the album would suit my target audience.

I have learnt that knowing who my products will be aimed towards will improve the appeal of the product to the customers. I have also learnt that graphic designers will always investigate their target market to make sure there are customers to sell the product to. In addition I have learnt that promoting a product in-appropriately would be costly and affect the bands appearance.

Hello, I am Fred and I will guide you through your project. I am 15 years old and enjoy many types of music. I particularly enjoy electric music. My favourite colour is blue and I enjoy skateboarding and playing computer games. I usually listen to my music when skateboarding or chilling out. I earn £15 a week doing a paper round. I live in a fairly urban area. There are no music stores in my area so I have to go into the nearby city. I like to save my money but I also like to buy music. Mainly I buy my music online as it is easier and more convenient but occasionally I will go into HMV and buy CDs. I always look for creative and attractive CD packages. I don’t like pop music and I hate football. I always want to be outside and be skateboarding.

Hello, I’m Fred and I will be here to guide you through key aspects of your project.

I will be researching and analysing different products and creating an image and mood board to gather inspiration for logo design. I will also be gaining information on issues with materials used in graphic products. I addition I will research the safety issues regarding the tools which I will use.

I have learnt that there are certain elements that I need to incorporate into all my products. I have also learnt that I need to gain information on inspirational logos and that an effective logo design is usually a simple design. I now know what promotional material I will be creating for my band. I will need to decide on which type of band to design promotional material for.

I have learnt that a CD cover is one of the most important parts of the project to make it attractive, unique, bold and related to the genre of the band. Also linking the CD’s image to the POS stand would improve the image of the band. I have also learnt that there should be links between my genre of the band, for instance blues, light and dark should be used to highlight the electric feel. Aesthetics:- The packaging of the CD’s contains a simple but effective theme throughout the product. The colours and design are similar with diagonal lines being all primary colours, which are vibrant and bold, reflecting each of the separate CD cases. The typography is also reflected through the product. The font is large on the package to attract customers and the black background also helps to make the colours and font stand out. Overall the design appeals to the target market that the designers encourage to buy the product. Cost:- The cost of the product was £15 but now may cost £12 or less. The cost to make the product will be considerably less than to buy. By mass producing the product the materials used will cost less from suppliers. This leads to greater profits for the company owners. Client:- The main customers to buy this CD would be young teenagers and young adults. Suited to both genders because of the music's genre. Also the design is suited to teenagers with bright, simple and vibrant colours. Environment:- The outer package is made from card and the 3 CD cases are made from plastic. The card could easily be re-cycled and so could the plastic. If the CD package was no longer needed by the customer, it can therefore be recycled. Making this product very environmentally friendly. Ergonomics:- The product is easy to use. The CD cases are easy to remove from the card package and the CDs themselves can be easily removed. The package needs to be simple to remove the CDs. Yet the individual CD packages need to keep the CDs secure inside each of the packages.. Safety:- The product has no sharp edges on the card or plastic. It would be safe for children and there are not many different components to the package. The materials are durable and secure so that the package doesn't fall apart. Size:- The size of the packaging is roughly 125mm in height, 140mm in width and 20mm in depth. It is important for the design as there are 3 CD cases that need to fit in the packaging but they must be not too slack or too tight. Function:- The package’s main function is to attract the customer to buy the product. The design is related to the target markets desires. Another important function is to protect the CDs from damage. It also acts as a holder for the CD. Increasingly nowadays music is digital and so CDs are being swapped for downloads. This means that trying to get customers to buy music from shops means there may need to be extra content that comes with the CD e.g. a pull out or poster.

Materials:- The materials the CD package are made out are of card, paper and plastic. The materials are all mass produced together in the manufacturing process of the packaging. All the materials are durable and strong. The plastic surrounding the cases acts as protection as well as a waterproof surface. I should think about the materials I will use in my CD package.

Aesthetics:- The poster is bright and simple. The name of the band is tied into the images on the poster. The colours on the poster make the poster feel cheerful. All the instruments and objects related to the band are placed around them like a collage. It shows the time, date and place of the gig as extra information. The arrangement is simple and attracts customers to want to find out more. As the band is comedic the poster reflects their genre. The poster is unique. I would like to use inspiration from this poster to influence my products for the band. Cost:- The cost to make the poster will be cheap, manufactured in bulk to reduce costs. Manufacturing in bulk is used by many bands. The poster appeals to a wide range of people as it is graphically interesting and appropriate for all ages Client:- The main client would be somebody who enjoys the bands music and genre. Teenagers to Adults. It is a comedic band while also having young members allowing many people to enjoy them. Environment:- The poster will be made out of either paper or thin card. The product will be laminated or in some way to protect it form water so that it can be advertised outside. The paper or card could easily be recycled but if the poster was laminated it couldn’t be easily recycled. Ergonomics:- The product is appropriate for its function. It advertises the band and gives the customer information on where the band are performing. It is cheap and a great way to promote the gig. The unique appeal of the poster means that more people who see the poster will be interested in the band. Size:- The size depends on the location of the poster. For instance if it was in an arena it may be technologically displayed on screens, in a waiting area, or on very large posters in the waiting areas. If the poster was placed around cities and towns, the smallest it should really be is A4.

Does this job very e

Safety:- The poster may have sharp edges if it was made out of thin card. Yet if this was technologically launched onto screens there would be no safety hazards with the product. Function:- The main function of the poster is to advertise the band to encourage potential clients to go to the gig. It also acts as promotional material for the band and tells the time and date of the gig. It does this job very well as the poster is eye-catching, unique and very well designed.

Personally, I really like the poster. It is cool and unique

Materials:- The product will be made out of paper or thin card. There is only one component to the poster. This keeps the poster simple and stops different parts of the poster falling apart or being ripped. It will be attached to walls by blu-tac which is very cheap.

I have learnt that posters are a great way to promote a band. It is cheap and easy to manufacture. They are great because posters can be adapted technologically or placed anywhere in streets and venues. It is one of the best promotional pieces of material I will definitely be include a poster in my promotional material for the task. I now know that posters and all the material I will be making will have to be as appealing and unique as the poster above.

The band’s logo is also incorporated into the product. It is present throughout the product. It is simple, bold and effective. It reflects the artist and purpose.

I now need to think about how I will create a 4 fold CD package. I need to think about where I will place my glue tabs, bar code and the layout of the front CD cover, as well as the inside. I also need to decide where to place my design so that the CD package is fluent and not blocks of images. I have learnt that the bar code (and other parts of the design that are less attractive) need to be placed away from the main design so that potential customers from being put off of the product

There are four folds in this product. Each of the folds contain a separate image, piece of text or both. The designers will arrange this so that each fold follows into one another and that when the product is folded up, that the sections are in the right places. The colours used present a clear contrast. The blue typography is bold, rich and stands out, while the light brown on the product harmonises with the blue. This follows through on the product to make it unique. The product does not have any drastic design changes within the design. It all follows a theme.

The CD package is designed specifically so that it folds neatly and securely. This The songs, relevant copyright and not only protects the product, but also barcode logos are placed on the back keeps the product together with no loose of the CD package. This helps to parts. If there were loose parts, it would ensure customers are attracted to not appeal to customers. the overall appearance of the CD package.

The product will be made by machines. Which will create the exact net including the fold, glue tabs and shaped cuts. The product should fit tightly together. This contributes to the quality of the product. The image above is a die cutter. Die cutting is a manufacturing process used to create large numbers of the same shape from a material such as wood, plastic, metal, fabric or in my case card. I could use a die cutter for my four fold CD, however making it by hand would be an easier method of production than to produce a die cutter for my CD package net alone.

The four fold CD follows a theme through the design. The colours, dark blue and light brown are a constant throughout the package. Designers often do this so that customers know which CD is for which band and so that it looks professional and unique.

I have learnt that all the products above are graphically appealing to the eye. As I have said before I can now gain inspiration from the posters, CD’s and tickets. I have also noticed that different colours reflect a band’s genre. For instance the Iron Maiden Ticket uses reds and dark browns to reflect a metal feel. However MIKA have fun vibrant colours to reflect the genre of their band.

On this page I have learnt that creating a mood board will help me later on in developing my logo and band publicity, allowing me to use ideas from this page and incorporate them into my designs. Later in the project I will hand draw the ideas from this mood board, then edit and enhance them using Photoshop. The snake, alien and superman logo will definitely be edited and developed later in the project.

I really like the colours and designs on the mood board. Especially the Alien theme.

Primary Colours:- Red, Blue and Yellow are the colours that can’t be made by any other colour. Secondary Colours:- Green, Purple and Orange are the secondary colours, these are made by mixing two of the primary colours. Tertiary Colours:- These are the colours that are made by mixing primary and secondary colours.

Colour Association :- Red is associated with anger, heat, power, fire, passionate, chilli, spicy, hate, romance, blood. :- Orange is associated with youth, vibrant, cartoon, bright, different, fruity, sweet, tasty, oranges. :- Yellow is associated with day time, sunny, cheerful, summer, happy, loyal, hope, peaceful. :- Green is associated with wildlife, trees, recycling, grass, earth, land, sick, jealousy, sour, apple. :- Blue is associated with the cold, sky, ocean, clear, chilled, smooth, movement, relaxing, social.

Contrasting Colours:- These are the colours directly opposite each other on the colour wheel e.g. (red-green). Harmonising Colours:- These are colours directly next to each other on the colour wheel.

:- Purple is associated with expensive, royal, noble, outstanding, magic, intellect, creative, proud. :- Black is associated with death, darkness, fear, speed, unhappy, depressed, classy, superiority.

The colours are very ordinary and too bland for my genre. However I like the font as it is bold.

I like the joined up font, though I feel it wouldn’t suit my band. The colours are very contrasting, though this is more light and varied. I really like the font and colours. The font really suits the name of my band and the colours comes across electrically. It appeals to customers. The font is scratched and creative. I would use this font for my band but the colours give out a more metal, fire feeling to the scheme.

:- White is associated with winter, snow, relaxing, emptiness, elegance, heaven, god, mountains, clouds . The font is eye catching and unique however the pinks and purples are more based around love and royalty. Therefore I don’t think they suit my genre of music. The font is too childish and inappropriate for an electric genre. Yet the colours really reflect the theme I would like to put across.

On this page I have learnt that different colours contrast and harmonise each other. I feel now that different blues (dark and light) will reflect my genre of the band. I can now decide on what font to use for my band name. I have learnt that the name of the band should relate to the font. This enhances the bands genre and feeling. I have learnt overall that the colours are one of the main features for promotional material. I shall look back to this page so I can decide on colours and font. I would like to have hand drawn elements within my publicity material and on my CD case.

I have learnt that there are specific tools that I will need to use when creating my publicity material. Certain materials such as cardboard will not be suitable. Its main purpose is to be a strong material to transport goods. However grey board will be great for my POS stand.

Crafting Knife

A crafting knife would be great for my project as it cuts out card safely and accurately.

For cutting the net of my CD package, poster and ticket.

The tool is sharp and could cut skin or break with too much pressure.

Safety Ruler

Safety rulers can be used with a craft knife to increase safety and accuracy. Made from metal so not easily damaged.

Use with a craft knife to cut my net.

No issues with the ruler but it is made to increase safety.

Glue Gun

A glue gun is suitable to stick my Point Of Sale stand as it is easy to spread the glue and stop lumps appearing and degrading it.

Sticking the support on the back of my POS stand.

The glue is hot and could burn skin.

Cutting Mat

Used with a crafting knife to stop the damage to tables. Suited to cutting out parts of my design with a craft knife.

Cutting my CD package net out using the cutting mat.

No issues involved with the cutting mat , it reduces damage to tables.

Card

Useful as a material as it is cheap and a strong material. Mainly it is not too rigid, allowing easy folds, making it good to use for my products.

Used as the material for my CD package.

Possible paper cut if handled wrong.

Vinyl

A great, cheap material to enhance my POS stand and to emboss certain parts of my design such as my logo or related image.

I will use this in my POS stand.

There are no safety issues with using vinyl.

Grey Board

Strong, thick, durable material suited to my Point Of Sale stand. Known for its resistance to damage. The design will have to be accurately placed on the POS stand.

Used for my POS stand.

Could accidently hit somebody with a large piece of the material.

Card Board

Cardboard would not be suitable as it is intended for packaging due to its corrugation within the material.

I will not be using card board in my project.

I will not be using cardboard within my design.

Laminator

It is a cheap way to produce a glossy effect that will be used on my ticket. However in industry, this method would not be suitable.

Used on my ticket

Plastic does become fairly hot, could burn skin.

Reclaimed Materials are those materials that have already been used in a product before being used in another. These are the materials that have already been recycled and are being used again and again. I may use these within my products. It does depend on what materials I will be able to gain in the class. Green Designs means that a product has been produced with no non-renewable materials. This concept is proving very popular with customers. Using this boosts the reputation of companies and their services. This may not apply to the products I will be making as my products will have some materials on which are non renewable. This Recycling symbol shows that the product can be used again for many other products. It is important to recycle due to the fact that we can not keep producing plastics, and other materials, from an un-sustainable source of crude oil. By recycling these materials it saves raw materials as well as recycling being in the customers interests. I will try to produce my products using recyclable materials by minimizing the use of plastics and using card based materials. The Carbon Footprint is also an issue that I will need to take into account. Carbon footprint is the amount of ‘greenhouse gases’ that are released by a person, company, population or even species. The amount of greenhouse gas needs to be monitored by everyone. I will try to produce my products efficiently by buying my products locally, rather than buying materials from other countries which require transportation. This symbol represents the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ Littering programme. It is usually found on food packaging to try and encourage people to not drop litter but rather to place their rubbish in bins. It also makes people aware that they have a responsibility to keep streets tidy. Deliberately dumping common waste is a big problem for local communities, and this is an attempt stop people committing this crime. Ethical Issues are important in industry. Using swear words or language that could offend cultures or religions would promote a bad reputation within certain communities. Some bands and artists deliberately promote their music to offend religions and cultures. When producing my product I will definitely make sure I do include any offensive language.

Copyright is the protection of somebody else's work. Usually the person who created the work is the owner of it. This could be musical, artistic, literary, logos or films. If I was creating my product for the public and mass producing it then I would have to use my own images or apply to use other owners images. In the task set I will not be releasing my product to the public and so I can use my own and others images. For this reason, my work will not be subject to copyright. When creating my product I will try to reduce the amount of Wastage in the materials that I use. I should do this when printing my products by using the least amount of the materials possible. If there is any left over, I could recycle the materials like card and paper. Fair-trade is a symbol that shows that your product has been made from fairly priced materials. Fair-trade is implemented to try to improve peoples’ lives within other poorer countries. Fair-trade is a world wide recognised logo that raises the price of products and some customers are prepared to pay more knowing that the product has been fairly made.

I have learnt that there are certain symbols that I should and should not put on my CD package. Some are related to different industries. The recycling symbol should be on the package as my package will be recyclable. However the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ symbol is not necessary as it is usually used in the food industry. Using these widely known signs will improve how professional and realistic my publicity will appear.

Materials The materials I am going to use are card for my CD package card, vinyl and grey board for my POS stand. I have chosen some of these materials due to their durability and strength. Vinyl is a cheap way to emboss and enhance my product. Having a plastic case would make the case stronger and waterproof. However we do not have the materials in school. Ergonomics The CD package that I have been tasked to create will be 4 fold. This means that the customers interact with the product. The inside of my CD package is going to also have an interesting design. I may also create a image folder for the inserts inside the package. Environmental Issues Aesthetics My product will be unrecyclable because of the vinyl used on my CD The band needs to differ from others, so I will be designing an effective and package. This is a concern about my product. Yet all of my other designs unique logo. The colours will reflect the genre of my band. This page I have used my mood board to create potential, hand drawn, ideas that could be developed later on, to become my band logo.

This logo design is simple and effective. The two colours contrast each other boldly. The logo is tidy, but doesn’t follow the colour scheme of dark and light blues.

I dislike this logo. The colours are boring and bland. It would not suit my bands genre or band name. I don’t want to develop this as it wouldn’t suit my band.

In this page I have learnt how to extract ideas from my mood board into hand drawn ideas and then develop them in Photoshop. I have learnt that collaborating all my ideas into a mood board can help me at this stage. I have also been able to modify and perfect any mistakes that I have made when hand drawing my ideas. This enhances the professional look of the product. I will now choose three designs that I like to develop them even further.

I love this logo. It is complicated but bold, bright and could easily be developed into a more advanced intriguing logo. It also follows the colour scheme and reflects the bands name .

This logo is a development of an existing logo. I really like the effect of the ‘blood red’ area of the hand and the contrast between colours. This may be used in development.

I like the idea of an ‘Alien’ theme as the band name suggests something from outside the planet. This logo would suit my band but would need to be enhanced .

This is also ‘Alien’ like. It is professional and unique. The colours reflect the colour scheme and the bands name. I will be developing this logo.

I really like the first and second development. They differ from each other but I love the brushes used on each of them.

This was the first development for my snake logo. I used brushes from the internet to create a messy increase in tones. I also incorporated a tree which I filled red for the veins in the eyes. I think this logo is very effective. The green tints make the snake more dimensional. It is a fairly complex logo. It doesn’t follow my colour scheme of dark and light blues.

In the fourth logo, I have incorporated my mood board into the logo. It is bright and colourful and the font is big and bold. However having my mood board in my logo makes the logo too complex which might not be appropriate. It doesn’t follow the colour scheme that I feel is the best for the genre of music.

In my second development I have used the smudge, burn and lasso tool. I firstly cut half way through my logo and smudged the design out toward my band name. I have burned around the face to increase the 3D look. It is a really attractive design and follows my electric colour scheme. This logo is complex but it is unique and different to the other developments.

This logo is similar to development 1 but I have changed the colours and made it more colourful. I experimented with this to see the appearance of different colours and ideas. It works well but does not really link with the theme of the band name and the genre of the band. I would not use this for my logo.

This third design is simple compared to the first two designs. I didn’t use many tools other than the fill bucket and paint brushes from the internet. This design is too simple. It may follow the colour scheme but there is not much excitement or originality coming from the logo. I will not use this as my logo for the band.

This final development has used brushes and the lasso tool. I really like the effect of the brushes, the colours are vibrant. I sliced the top left of the logo off so that I could experiment with the positioning of the band name. It works well and looks professional. Overall this logo is great and attractive as well as being appropriate for the genre.

I think some of these designs are too plain and simple, however I like the second development due to the colours involved in the design.

This was the first development of my flying saucer logo. I added simple shading to enhance the 3 dimensional look using the burn tool. I also changed the colours of the blue as I felt it needed to be darker. I dislike the logo as it is boring and the shading is poorly applied. It does not look professional and required little skill to create.

Again, I have changed the colours to grey, green and yellow. I feel that the development is ok because the colours are different but not exciting. The overall appearance, if placed on my publicity material, would make the material look un-professional.

In this logo design I used a downloaded photo shop brush to create texture and a contrast in tones. I also removed parts of the bottom section of the logo as they looked untidy. I like the logo as it has great colours and looks neat and precise. This is one of the most complex developments of this logo.

This development has used the same colours but I have incorporated the name of the band, into the logo differently. Using the smudge tool and splitting the logo in half. It is a unique logo and has an interesting appearance. Personally, I think it looks unprofessional again as the smudge tool has been applied badly.

I have removed the legs of the flying saucer and experimented with green and yellows as the main colours. The logo is bold and bright however may not look great on my promotional material. It shows little skill in the development of ideas.

Here, I have duplicated the logo and reversed the colours on the logos behind the centre logo. It works really well as this logo incorporates more than one of the flying saucers into the design. It also differs from the other developments which makes it unique.

I really like developments 5 and 6. They look professional, unique and differ from one another.

In this logo I removed the colour and added an image which I tweaked slightly in Photoshop. It doesn’t feel like it could be a good logo as it is quite boring and does not stand out well from the other logo designs. That is one of the main criteria for my logo and all of my band publicity.

Now, I have duplicated the original logo and changed he colour of the background logos. This design is simple and follows the colour scheme that I chose from the start of this project. This design may be used on my front cover design but I don’t think this could be my final logo design.

For this development I used a downloaded Photoshop brush to create different types and colours of squares within the Aliens head. It definitely stands out, follows my colour scheme and could really reflect the look I want the band to have.

In this logo I added an additional logo and removed equal spaced lines from the design and applied it to the logo underneath. It is really weird and outstanding. It reflects my band and is a fairly simple design. I really like this logo and will definitely consider using it for my bands full logo, but maybe changing the colour to blue.

Here I used two different colours of blue and using a Photoshop brush and then smudging them to create the effect through the middle of the logo. It looks unique and follows my colour scheme. I may use this for my band logo.

In contrast, this logo I have also removed parts of the design and then replaced them in the shape of the Alien. I have also applied different tints and shades of blue to different sections of the Alien. I have also tried to incorporate the name of the band into the logo. It is a really effective logo which is unique and complex.

*The numbers highlighted in red were peer assessed and those in blue were self assessed.

Logo

In this page my peers have assessed 3 of my logos and I have assessed the other 3 designs. This has enabled me to gain some feedback from my peers. Using this table, and my personal opinion, I can choose which logo I would like to carry forward for my band. This will be the top logo design with a score of 49/60. I think this is the most unique and related logo, for my band.

The CD case needs to have some essential elements incorporated into the design. Certain parts of the design can affect whether a potential customer will buy the product. Other parts need to be included in the design for environmental and legal reasons. It needs to have... -An appealing and unique front cover -The bands name -A possible sleeve insert -A CD holder within the case. -The barcode so it can be bought in shops -At least four folds for my particular design brief -All of the song titles on the back of the case

A point of sale stand is a cheap, effective way of selling a product to a customer. It holds the CD case in a pouch upon the stand. The POS stand relates to the band. It needs to have... -The bands name -An appealing and interesting design. -A sturdy and supportive back stand -The band logo upon the design -An appropriate size and shape. -Needs to be high quality images on the design -A comfortable slot for the CD package

Using this page I can now plan how my CD package’s, POS stand’s, poster’s and ticket’s dimensions, the designs are going to be upon them and where certain parts needed on these pieces of material are going to be placed. This can be used as a checklist to make sure all the promotional material has all the essential criteria within them.

A Ticket needs some key pieces of information for customers use, but the design can be simple or complex. There are some tickets that have strange shapes and graphics, others are simple rectangles with hardly any graphic content on them. However the ticket needs to... - Show location of the event - Have hologram to stop forgery - Show the bands name - Be small and compact - Be easy to read and understand - Have a barcode to be scanned - The date and time of the event

Posters are another cheap and easy way to publicise a product or gig. They usually come in A3-A4 size but can have wild and crazy shapes. They can easily be placed around arenas and in cities. They are good because they can be seen by a large audience which pass the poster. They do need to have... -The bands name -Where the venue of the gig is being played -An interesting design which is unique and eye catching -The date of the gig -Easy to read information -Maybe a review of the band. -An appealing and interesting design. -The poster also needs to relate to the bands genre so customers can easily understand the music to be played

Design 1: In this design I have added two triangles to the sides of the net and a CD insert on the left of the net. This design is fairly simple to make and is a different design to an ordinary CD package. However I will need to make sure that I complement each of the folds, otherwise the final package may be distorted and look un-professional. It may also only be able to fit one CD. I may edit this later.

Design 2: This design has two CD holders which are triangles on the far left and right of the net. They are held on to the net by glue tabs. The design is again a development from a simple net design. The CD holders will also accommodate the CD’s well. It should be simple to make is similar to CD packages in stores. I could maybe adapt this in another design.

Design 3: Here I have taken a simple design and added some triangular sections with cut outs within them. This will hold the 2 CDs. I have also added simple slips for a free slip or stickers to held in. The design is complex and unique. However getting the correct measurements for the design to fit to together correctly will be hard and could go badly wrong.

Design 4 Here I have added two CD holders within the two centre areas and the black dots are to represent magnets. The net will end up as a square. The magnets would keep the CDs secure yet we do not know the actual depth of the magnet and so extra space would have to be compensated for the magnets. I do really like the design as it is simple and would be easy to model.

60mm

Design 5 Now I have kept a simple design and added glue tabs and triangular slits onto the end of the nets. The ends of the net fold onto and glue down on the middle two squares. The main concern is that when I do a real model the CDs may be hard to remove from the package. If this is the case, I will not be using this design when carrying it forward into the design development.

Net development has allowed me to develop my ideas to produce different four fold CD packages. I have learnt that developing ideas helps to produce different CD packages. I will be able to use this page to choose my favourite designs to take forward to modelling. I will then be able to select my favourite design. Developing nets is also important to have an overview of the size and orientation of the nets I may be using.

I think that you should take design 1,4 and 5 into modelling. This is because they are all unique but simple to make. Then you can decide which model is most suited and best function well at the same time, keeping the CD safe as well as looking appealing to the eye

In this page I have modelled the designs that I think are the best. Some need minor tweaks for the package to fold up comfortably. I have written about each one and decided which net I will carry forward in my project.

The bottom right model is the best. It is a really easy model to make as well as being different from normal CD packages.

The design on the far right is very easy to make as all you need to do is take a simple design and cut out a triangular area and add some glue tabs either side. It would be easy to make, yet is not creative and different from other CD packages. There is also little space to remove and insert the CDs into the holders. This might make the customer unhappy with the CD package. I will not be using this design for my band.

The design below was the favourite out of my 5 models that I made, mainly because of its simplicity and its unique appealing design. It is based on the design folding into a compact centre hold where the CD will placed. However I will need to tweak the design slightly to compensate for the extra space needed for the CD holder in the centre of design. This will be my final design and I will carry this forward into my design development. The design to the left was very complex due to cutting the exact triangles out of the other added on triangles. It took a long time to make sure it was equal all the way around. I also feel that the triangles may be unable to hold the CDs within them and could fall out at any time. I generally dislike this design despite its complexity. It would be incredibly difficult to reproduce on grey board.

By modelling some of my favourite nets I have been able to determine which is able to compensate having extra CD holders in the net. I have learnt that modelling the designs allows me to make a small scale model, analyse the weakness in a design and change it before creating a large scale design. I can now use this page to create my final CD package design. As part of my design specification, I needed to create an interesting net. I can now use my modelling to determine the most interesting design for my four fold net.

Flyer: Back

I really like the Flyer (front) design. It has great colours and the logo faded into the background is very effective.

The back of my flyer is different to the front as I have removed the city foreground to make space for more information like the ticket hotline number and the venue. I used a font from ‘da font’ and have used it throughout my designs. However I have kept my fainted logo in the background as well as the sponsors and website. This allows there to be valuable information away from the appealing design on the front of the flyer. The design follows through on back and front and keeps the blue colour theme, and the Alien theme. Hopefully I will use all the designs and aspects of each of my developments in my final CD package. I do have a few slightly different designs that could be echoed in my final package.

Flyer: Front My Flyer started with a theme that I wanted to reflect on the ticket and on the CD package. I wanted the front to be minimalistic, with little information and more visual images, including my logo. I started by placing the blue scenery on the bottom as well as my logo which has been fainted behind the design. I then added small logos and the band website along the top and bottom to give the flyer a professional, realistic look. Finally I added the name of the band and the date of the performance in a blue box which allowed the band name to boldly stand out along with the the date of the performance. The Flyer is 148mm by 210mm which is fairly large, though allows a larger design.

POS stand:

My Point Of Sale stand (POS) came directly from my poster. I simply cut out a section of my poster, added the name of my band and then cut out another section for where my CD will be held. It did not matter how big or small this section was as I will be able to amend that when I make the POS stand. It took little time and unfortunately I have not really personalised it towards my band by making cut outs or adding fluorescent material to it. The shape and size is basically square at 208mm by 211mm. I think this is a good size for a point of sale stand though may fall down easily if not supported properly.

Below is the main step from my poster to my POS stand. I just need make sure that the stand placed at the back, needs to be sturdy and remain standing.

CD Template: 1 My CD development is simple and professional. I did want an element of my poster in the design so I decided to use a black background instead of white. I firstly added my logo to the right side, not fully on the design. I then added the song titles to the CD at an angle. It gives the design a more professional look. I then added the EMI logo to the design. This made the CD appear more realistic. My CD number two, has the same design but all shifted to the left. This continues the theme of the first CD. CD Template: 2 My 2nd CD is exactly the same as my first CD just the layout reflected over to the right.

Ticket: Front

\

Poster The size of this poster is A4 or 208mm by 297mm. My poster does include the same city theme along the bottom of the poster. Again a bold, artistic look to my poster. I started similarly to my flyer with the city theme though I wanted a black background. This is because unlike the flyer or ticket it is advertising all four venues rather than just one. I then added the name of my band in blue and white following my colour scheme on my designs. Along the bottom I added the names of the venues and the ‘touring once in the UK’. Each word is coloured differently especially the red ‘UK’ which differs from the blues used on the poster. I finally added the sponsors logos along with a few terms and conditions. I placed these out of the way of the main design to make it look professional and realistic.

My ticket front followed the same theme as my flyer for the same venue. I firstly decreased the opacity of the city skyline and added the bold blue lines with the O2 academy logo. I then incorporated my logo, along with the band name, onto the centre of the design. I used a ‘ticket like’ font to write out some of the information on the ticket. I also placed a dashed line on the left hand side to show where the ticket would be ripped. The bar code was placed on the left hand side along with more information on the seating area. Hopefully I will also place a hologram on the ticket. This will make the ticket more realistic and harder to copy. Finally the ticket has a lot more information on it so that people know where they are to sit, and the rules that the venue wants people to observe. The tickets are 5.9 by 2.6 inches.

Ticket: Back The back of my ticket also follows a similar design to the flyer I created it with no major design on the back, allows more information to be placed on the ticket, while being easy to read. I firstly copied the bold blue lines from the front of the design to keep a similar pattern. Following on I added the dotted line on the right hand side at the exact measurement so that the two dotted lines would line up when they are stuck together. I wanted the back to have more information so I also added a seating plan of the venue. This way the customers who had bought their tickets would be able to navigate the venue easily. I then used some terms and conditions from the venue I will be using. I then added the sponsors logos along the bottom in quite a large typeface. I also added the website of the band three times along the bottom of the ticket so that it fits the design. Finally I added the ‘ticket master’ logo on the back right hand side. This shows the website at which the customer bought the ticket. I will also be adding a hologram to increase the realism of the ticket and to make sure that the ticket can not be forged.

I really like the CD package outside of the design follows through from other pieces of your work. The triangle designs with the name of the band are very effective.

CD package outside:

CD package inside: The inside of my CD package was a lot harder to design. I checked that I did not need to size the net at all otherwise when I came to stick them together they would not line correctly. I started by adding the city skyline from the front of my CD package and added a faint copy behind it. I used this through the middle of my net along both of the triangles. I decided I wanted two different designs on the top and bottom section. On the bottom I decided to go for a darker design. I placed a dark blue skyline on the bottom and blurred it out to make it look a little like a watery effect. I again faded out my logo behind this design. I then wanted to add a black background to this section. Finally I duplicated my logo 5 times each time decreasing the opacity by 50% then 25% etc. I also did this with the album name and then arranged them on the top section of my CD package. The inside and outside differ in the simplicity outside and the complexity inside. That was the main objective to achieve on my CD package. I will also be adding a vinyl design to either the POS stand or the CD package. It will need to follow the theme through my designs

I have learnt that developing ideas allows the creator to see the certain stages that may need to be changed. Making sure the designs link with other designs is important. Also I have learnt that certain extra items go on different pieces of publicity. For instance the ticket will have more information related to the venue, time and rules while a poster may incorporate a more elaborate design In order to make potential customers look at the poster. Finally that to improve the realistic quality of my designs I will be able to add a hologram to my ticket.

The CD package has a max. height of 16.7 inches and a max. width of 15.3 inches. The design of my CD package is much different to a standard four fold CD package. I firstly added the city skylines, light blue in front, dark blue behind . The light blue skyline follows the design all the way round the package which I really like. I continued to follow the theme of my flyer by adding my faded out logo in the background. I also just filled in the bottom section of the net in blue as this will fold inside and is not part of the main design. Next I focused on the triangle parts of my net. I added the name of my band, adjusted the colours and made them as central as possible so that the font lines up together when they are folded. I then focused on how I wanted the name of the band to appear on the front of the package. I placed the name of my band in a bold, dark blue box and the name of the album below without a box. Finally I added the CD’s song titles on the back of the package along with the barcode and the publishing company’s name.

Next to this are all my pieces of work for my band nested onto one large Photoshop file. I have placed all my work on this page so that the quality of the print remains the same for all pieces of work. It also reduces printing costs by having it all printed on the same sheet of card, as well as reducing wasting card and ink. Quite a lot of my designs had a white background. Therefore on some of the designs I added a background behind the work so that I could easily cut it out correctly. This is called tessellation. I will be laminating my ticket. This will give the effect of a glossy finish as well as making the ticket more durable. I have also hand drawn my CD package in order to focus on the way in which all the folds fold. In addition I will be able to use this in order to make sure I create the net correctly. This is my Point Of Sale stand. It has the main function of holding the CD package. I will need to consider a few elements such as the length of the back support so that it can remain stable when stood upright as well as the volume inside the CD package holder, to ensure the package is snug, though not too tight.

V I have learnt that tessellation is the process where by placing all of my designs in a close space on a Photoshop file in order to save printing costs, in large and small scale production. I need to ensure that the print quality for all of my designs are the same. I have also learnt that understanding the orientation of my designs will help me when sticking different designs, the back and front, together.

CAD/CAM stands for Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture.

Plotter cutter: Above is an image of a plotter cutter. I will use this to emboss a part of my work. I will use 2D design software we have in school to create an accurate design to attach to one of my pieces of work. A plotter cutter has a blade that can cut very fast but only very simple designs can be made. 2D design and CAD/CAM: 2D design is the software we have installed at our school in order to use CAD/CAM. I will be using it to create embossed or ‘raised’ section of some of my designs. I will probably use this on my POS stand. We do not have an embossing machine in school and so using vinyl gives the same impression. Advantages: - Designs become more accurate than if created by hand - Reduces the time taken to create the design - Easy to make accurate and simple copies of a design - Used in industry to create many copies of the same design to an accurate and time saving method Disadvantages: - Plotter cutting may not work for complex designs - Software is expensive - Difficult to use if not familiar with the software

SMART/MODERN materials: A material that changes its properties due to external factors are SMART materials. For instance a fluorescent material changes its appearance when there is little light. They can also change appearance from moisture and temperature. Material that are developed through the invention of new or improved processes are called modern materials. I will use a modern material somewhere in my design, as it is part of my brief. The modern material that I will use, shall be placed on my ticket. A Hologram is used to attempt to stop people from illegally producing fake tickets in order not to pay for a real one. Using a hologram on my ticket will increase the realistic appearance of the ticket. Another material I will be using is vinyl. Vinyl is a relatively cheap material and by using it I can repeat designs and place them onto my work using 2D design and a plotter cutter. Vinyl can be used to emboss certain aspects of my design and is a cheaper method than other embossing techniques.

These are the holograms that I will be using.

How I will use 2D Design: I will be taking a design from Photoshop and importing it into 2D design. This is linked to the schools plotter cutter. My design to the right is the simple skyline idea that I have chosen. I will hopefully use white vinyl in a way that on my CD package, it will reverse my colour scheme on the inside. I will need to measure the exact height and length to maximise accuracy.

I think that you should include a hologram on your ticket to make the design appear more realistic

I have learnt that CAD/CAM can be used to create accurate, mainly simple designs using a variety of different materials. I have learnt that a SMART material is a material that changes its appearance due to external conditions, like light and temperature. CAD/CAM can be used to speed up an industrial process as well as having continual consistency in accuracy. I know that this is an easier way to emboss a design.

This page could be used as a guide for somebody to use if they wanted to produce my products, using the same methods, tools, materials and designs as me.

Materials Needed: - White Card - Grey Card - Grey Board - Coloured Vinyl (Blue) - A hologram My production record would allow somebody to make sure that the final outcome is of a high quality. It also allows the producer to make sure that they produce a high quality product by following the quality control steps.

This shows my Quality Control flow chart, which could be used to highlight all the steps and quality control the producer must check and complete in order to make all the products first time without needing to re print.

This shows the way in which I printed all of my designs. This will make sure that the producer knows that by placing all of the designs on one Photoshop file, print quality remain the same and costs are reduced.

This 1 point perspective drawing of my CD package would be used to show the person producing my package the orientation, lengths and the appearance of the overall package.

Equipment Needed: - Safety Rule - Craft Knife - Glue Stick - Glue Gun - Plotter Cutter - 2D Design (CAD/CAM software) - Cutting mat - Large Colour Printer (A3 or larger) Important Photos Some of the most important photographs of my make include making sure you use a craft knife and safety rule in order to produce straight edges, using grey card for the poster and not grey board and making sure that all the designs are on the same nest when printed so that print quality is maintained.

Customer Profile: I feel I have listened and created a product for my customer profile. Using their favourite colour, blue, throughout my designs, I have tried to create the most attractive design that fitted my customer profile. I have made sure that the customer would be able to buy the CD without having to spend a lot of money. Using a high quality material and print for my CD package makes the customer feel they are getting value for their money. When they looked at the final product they were very pleased with the designs and felt that it would appeal to them and the other potential target market that fitted the same customer profile. Design Brief: My design brief included a minimum of four folds within the CD package, which I achieved and added an original design of my net. Secondly it stated that any number of CD’s could be included and I placed two CDs into my design. Finally I also needed to incorporate a smart or modern material on one of my designs. I have placed a hologram onto my ticket to make it look more realistic and to complete the design brief. I feel that I have met all the required outlines in the design brief. Creating a variety of relevant publicity material, creating a four fold CD package and including a smart or modern material.

Target Market: The target market for my band wanted an interesting and exciting CD package to look at, while also being sturdy and secure. I feel that I have achieved this through creating a uniquely shaped net for my CD package, an exciting theme throughout my designs and a sturdy secure CD package. By using aliens and blue, black and white colour schemes I feel that I have produced a product that appeals to a teenager or young adult. Focusing more on interesting designs on the products appeals to the target market. I also added urban surroundings to the designs to relate to the likely geographical locations of the target market. Overall, my designs reflect what the target market want. They follow the requirements of the design brief, recommendations of the customer profile and the needs of the target markets.

Gender: In my target market analysis, I stated that my work would be aimed at both male and female teenagers. I feel that I have achieved designs and the final make aimed at both men and woman. I think that using blue, white and black allows my work to appeal to both teenagers and young adults, male or female. I also think that my designs appeal to the target market, that are both male and female, who live in urban areas because of the skylines running through my designs. I have found that by evaluating my product against the requirements and needs of the design brief, customer profile and target market has allowed me to see weather my product would sell and meet the needs of design brief. I have learnt that in industry if a product did not meet the requirements of a design brief they wouldn’t be sold.

Aesthetics I stated that in my designs, I need to include an effective and unique logo. My manipulated alien logo does stand apart from many other logos. All of my designs have the logo on them. I have stuck to the design specification by including this on all my designs other than my POS stand. I did not use my logo on my POS stand as there was no appropriate placement for it. I have also used my blue theme in all of my designs somewhere. An change I did make was changing the font used on my flyer, ticket and CD package. I felt that using the original font on the poster worked well as it is a much bolder font. Yet on the others, it looked to chunky and out of place. Function Due to the interesting net design of my CD package, the durability and protection it offers and the unique design inside and outside, I feel that I have fulfilled the requirements I outlined for this section of the design specification. I did change the CD package ever so slightly because I did not want my first fold to be stuck down, otherwise the CD would be very hard to remove from the casing. Quality The quality of my work is the same throughout because I printed all the designs out on the same nest. There are no pixilation due to the print quality, frail edges of the designs because of cutting and I find that I have produced all my work to a professional standard. The only problem I have with my work is in the CD package. Unfortunately the folds are not as accurate and I feel as though it lowers the quality.

Ergonomics In my design specification I said that I may want to include an image or information booklet. I did not include this into my design as I felt that I was unable to design an attractive information booklet that would be able to incorporated into the design of my CD package. I have created a four fold CD package which was part of my design brief and design spec. In addition I needed to use an interesting design inside of the package. I feel I may not have achieved this simply because I did not have the graphical ability.

Materials Unfortunately, due to the quality of card we had at the time the one of the folds on my final make is not to a very high standard. Personally, I think that it really does affect the quality of the make for the CD package. I have followed the design specification for all the other materials I used for my POS stand, poster, flyer and ticket. Durability I have used card for all of my designs or backed them with it , other than the POS stand and poster. This has allowed all my products to retain the structure and quality as well as making sure I use the most appropriate material for the appropriate piece of publicity.

Weight and Size My overall CD package is incredibly light. Although this would not effect the customer who buys the product. It shows I have created a design without wasting extra card for the sake of an extra fold. Target Market My target market,14-25 year olds, has remained the same throughout the project. I am unsure as to the average cost of producing all my designs and so am unsure as to what price my product would be. Safety Issues I have tried to make sure there are few sharp edges on my CD package. Yet there is little that I can do to change the edges without affecting the quality in the process. There are few safety issues with my other designs like poster as it is mainly a flat hazard free piece of material. Environmental Issues All of my designs, apart from the CD package, are able to be recycled. This was stated in the design specification. In my designs there needs to be an element of CAD/CAM and so using vinyl was the only available option which makes my CD package unable to be recycled.

Instructions I did not include any instructions in my CD package simply because it was simply not necessary to use them inside of my CD package.

I have learnt that a product needs to meet the required standard especially within its design, quality, function and materials. All aspects of the design specification need to be considered in order to produce a successful product.

On this page I have created a questionnaire relating to the different products I have made. The questions are all related as to weather the person likes the product. I have also asked the personal opinion of three different people within my target market age range. I wanted them to tell me the positives and negatives of my products. Question

I really like all of the designs you have created. You have used appropriate materials for each piece of promotional material and the CD package. All of the products are as safe as possible. I only dislike the quality of a fold on the CD package you produced.

Opinions:I asked 15 year old, Jamie Geddes, a few questions about my overall designs and products; “The CD package’s net deign is simple however effective because it protects the CD inside and makes it very portable unlike some bulky CD cases. The logo is clearly shown and is original on all the designs. The placement of the logo on the CD package is unusual as it is behind all foreground, when normally it is on top of the other designs. This makes the package stand out over others as it has a unique appearance. The quality of the make was a good standard however the folding on one section of the design was to a high standard. If you were to redo the CD case, I would focus on practising the folds, however the rest of the design was at a high standard.” I asked 19 year old, Sid Wright, a few questions about my overall design and products; “The font used stands out making the band name clearly known. The font used is bold and gives it a professional touch. I think that you should of kept the font the same on all the designs. The choice to use the vivid blue and darker blue gives your products a good contrast. This contrast in colour also makes the product have a depth to it so the colour style is well chosen. I dislike the fact that the package has some minor folding errors which would have to be corrected before it went on sale in a store”. I asked 16 year old, Cameron Irvine, a few questions about my overall designs and products; “I really like your choice of colours, they really suit what I would look for in a CD package of this genre. I think that the way you have made the poster and POS stand different does show that each one is advertising different scales of the concerts. However I think you should have produced them with a similar design to the other products”. Overall Jamie Geddes: I personally would buy it since it looks professional on the whole and the colours attract me to the design. Overall Sid Wright: I would only be interested in buying the CD is the package had been created without any folding errors, other than that your other designs are really unique in my opinion. Overall Cameron Irvine: I would certainly buy your CD package. I think that you have created some very professional promotional material. Your designs relate to the genre and the band which makes your work great all round.

Modifications: There are many aspects of my design that, if I could produce again, I would change. The designs of some of my products could have been changed. I would have changed the poster and POS stands designs so that they followed my blue and white theme. This would allow all my products to relate to one another and customers would recognise that all the products where related. I would also try to make my POS stand have a more unique appearance. I felt that a simple square shaped backing was not original. The materials used for most of my designs were appropriate for the product. However I felt that laminating the ticket gave it a cheap, unprofessional appearance, though in industry a similar glossy effect could be achieved to a higher standard. Print quality remained the same throughout the designs, yet if these products where made for commercial production, then the print quality would be dramatically improved. The quality of my make was a slight problem. My CD package was the only part with a slight fault in the quality of the make. One of the folds on the triangular section of my net sticks out of the package by around 3mm. If I could change this I would focus on the folds before I produced the real product. These errors could be easily modified or thrown away if it happened within commercial production. The colours that I used really did reflect what the target market wanted. They were also appropriate to the genre being electric music. All of my pieces of promotional material look as realistic and professional as possible and I am really pleased with the outcome of my poster, flyer, ticket, POS stand and CD’s. The only product I do not like the outcome of, is the CD package. The designs I felt were great it is just the quality of the make that I produced could have been improved. If my product did go into commercial production the main products that would change would be the poster’s design and the POS stand’s. Also the CD package would have to made to a high standard. All of my products are durable and use appropriate materials and designs. I am pleased with the final outcome. I have learnt that in industry, products can be made using different methods of production for different reasons. It could be that a product is made by mass production in order to meet the demand for the product, or that a product is made by batch production in order to have a more accurate quality control check so every product is to a high standard. I have also learn that products go through modification stages in order to improve a product before it goes on sale.

Commercial Production Commercial production can be implemented if a product is able to make enough sales to establish a place within a market, so that the product could be made on a commercial scale. Or that a product is generating enough interest and sales from the target market, that the product is viable to be produced on a large scale. My CD package could be made using either a batch process or using mass production. It was made by me as a one off production. One time production is a method that only produces one, high quality and unique product. It is also used to model and to produce a proto-type which can be modified when placed on large scale production. Batch production is mainly a labour intensive job requiring workers to produce smaller quantities of high quality products in batches. It is a much longer and time consuming process because once the process is completed, they have to start the process again. It is not a continual process. It could also be mass produced. Using mass production is very much a large scale operation producing 100’s of products in much shorter time periods as a continual process. It involves different assembly stations where different parts of a product come together. By the end everything is placed together to produce the final product. Advantages of using batch production allows all products to be produced to a high standard. Faults with a product are able to be noticed before they go on sale. This minimizes the risk of customer dissatisfaction. However batch producing products is very time consuming and an un-efficient method of producing large numbers of products. Advantages of mass production are that large numbers of products are continually produced over a shorter period of time. Also all the products should have a similar quality within the make. However errors and faults may not be noticed as products are continually being manufacturing. However the cost of setting this production up is usually high. The pictures beside show a mass production method using an assembly line. This method is usually used for more durable goods like cars and computers to increase the production rate. The pictures beside this show batch production. It will involve separate stages for each section of the product process. The process then starts again once a batch is finished.

All my designs on one sheet from the printer.

Cutting the designs out from this nest. Firstly with scissors.

Using a glue stick to prepare my poster to be mounted on top.

Using a safety rule to produce accurate folds.

Mounting my poster to grey card using glue to be trimmed.

A safety rule and craft knife used to enable smooth edges.

Using a triangular technique to cut out the centre of my CDs.

Marking my fold lines out using a trisect so that lines are straight.

Applying sections of card to fit each shape of my CD package.

Sticking down the card using glue onto each section.

Each section of the CD package leaving about 2mm between folds.
