MORECAMBE BAY

With its classic seaside towns, cultural attractions, estuaries brimming with wildlife, and wide sandy beaches offering views across to the Lake District fells, Morecambe Bay is a spectacular place to visit.

Hugging the southern Cumbrian coast, this area can be explored by road, rail, bus, bike or on foot. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to experience stunning vistas and a warm Cumbrian welcome to match. Breathe in the fresh sea air and watch the sunset across the bay. Recharge with a restorative seaside walk and explore beautiful dog-friendly beaches in Barrow. Pamper yourself with a spa day, and meditate at Ulverston’s Bhuddist Temple.

The scenic Cumbrian Coast railway line hugs the coast from Silverdale to Barrow-in-Furness, before continuing north. At points, it runs along the sands - and the views from your window are simply breathtaking. Stop off at the Edwardian seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands with its extensive promenade, traditional gardens and array of independent shops. Take in the whole of the Bay from the vantage point of Hoad Hill in Ulverston which provides the perfect panoramic view of the Lakeland fells.

Get even closer to the ever-changing sandy flats with a cross bay walk: a unique way to experience this spectacular place, it must be done with an official guide - a role so important, they are appointed by the King.

For arts and culture, you’ve come to the right place. There’s plenty to discover across Morecambe Bay, from vibrant celebrations in the festival town of Ulverston; to live music in Barrow. Workshops and events take place throughout the year.

Why not unleash your adventurous spirit? Take a walk on the wild side and be a zoo keeper for the day, or ride Friesian horses. Take a guided walk across the open expanse of the sands. Hop on a bike and explore the Morecambe Bay Cyclewayit's tramper accessible too.

If you’re a foodie, Morecambe Bay is the perfect place to be. It’s got four Michelin stars across two restaurants, as well as local produce fresh from farm and sea and even a gin distillery. There’s nothing quite like enjoying fish and chips on the pier at Arnside.

This is the home of some of Cumbria’s most fascinating wildlife. Go seal watching in Barrow, where a grey seal colony makes its home on the South Walney Nature Reserve; and make time to visit the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Natural Beauty, famed for its flora, fauna and butterflies.

Step back in time and discover the local history. A number of locations across Morecambe Bay form part of the Cistercian Way, including Cartmel Priory and Furness Abbey. Visit Piel Castle on its own island, which still has a king to this day; he’s also the landlord of the local pub.

Take care of your health and wellbeing: recharge with a walk by the ocean; indulge in a relaxing spa day; visit a horse sanctuary; and breathe in the fresh sea air.

WESTERN LAKE DISTRICT AND COAST

2023 is the Year of the Coast: spectacular sunsets as the sun dips into the Irish Sea; invigorating hikes up England’s highest mountain; majestic castles with captivating stories to tell; and so much more awaits in this awe-inspiring part of Cumbria.

Discover secluded beaches, hidden lakes and historic harbours. There are miles of coastline to explore: along the way, see sandstone cliffs and rugged sand dunes; and hear fascinating tales of smugglers, the spice trade and Iron Age forts. The Romans once patrolled the area’s shores; today, visit ruins and museums to learn their story.

Fancy a trip to the beach? There are plenty to choose from! The peaceful St Bees Beach marks the start of the newly awarded Coast to Coast National Trail; Maryport’s beach is great for an evening stroll (the sunsets are spectacular); and the sandy expanse of Silecroft Beach with Black Combe Fell rising behind is a sight to behold. Uncover our industrial heritage in towns and villages like Millom, Whitehaven, Cleator Moor and Workington. Don’t miss a trip to Ravenglass, which has the unique accolade of being in two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One of the best ways to arrive is by train on the awe-inspiring Cumbrian Coast railway line which follows the shoreline. Not only does it offer unrivalled views from the comfort of your carriage, it’s also a greener way to travel.

Good for the soul: the Cumbrian Coast has amazing sandy beaches perfect for a run, jog or relaxing walk. Highlights include the seaside villages of Silecroft and Allonby with their incredible sea views.

Check out the local nature and wildlife. The rare natterjack toad can be found along the coastline, while the stunning St Bees Head Heritage Coast & Nature Reserve is home to birds including puffins, razorbills and herring gulls.

Follow in the footsteps of the Romans: the historic Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site runs all the way down the coast from Bowness-on-Solway via Silloth and Maryport to the village of Ravenglass, where you’ll see the remains of a Roman Bath House.

CARLISLE AND HADRIAN’S WALL

In the north of Cumbria stands the county’s only city, and one of its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall offer a world of exploration, from modern and vibrant city living to historic landmarks and tales of a time gone by. With over 2,000 years of history to discover, there’s more than enough to keep everyone entertained here - from award winning museums and Roman forts to farm parks and watersports.

Standing on the border with Scotland, Carlisle has seen its fair share of conflict across the years. Its imposing castle stands testament to its past, having witnessed events including the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots; and the last siege suffered by a fortress in England.

Today, the city seamlessly blends old and new: historic buildings and heritage attractions stand alongside modern shops, restaurants, and cafes. Here, you’ll find independent boutiques and high street brands; a vibrant nightlife with cosmopolitan bars and restaurants; and a bustling cafe scene. By day, relax and watch the world go by over coffee and cake; come evening, enjoy street food and creative cuisine made using local produce.

Nearby, the lesser explored yet breath-takingly beautiful Solway Coast is known for its cliffs, dunes and wildlife –not to mention the stunning sunsets over the Solway Firth.

This is an area rich in history. In Carlisle, the mighty fortress of Carlisle Castle stands proud over the cityscape. Just a stone’s throw away from Carlisle is Hadrian’s Wall: a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to 122AD. Built to defend the north western frontier of the Roman Empire, it stretches for 73 miles from coast to coast.

If you’re visiting the area with family, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Kids can let off steam at the Bitts Park play area, learn about the Romans along Hadrian’s Wall, and enjoy seasonal events.

Combine adventure with history: explore Hadrian’s Wall by riding along the Hadrian’s Wall Cycleway; or walking the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail, taking in Roman forts, quaint villages, market towns like Brampton, and a dramatic coastline.

Take a restorative walk in Talkin Tarn Country Park: a peaceful oasis of calm just a stone’s throw from bustling Carlisle. The centrepiece is the glacial lake with an accessible path around its edge; it’s also a beautiful place for watersports and stargazing.

Officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Solway Coast is a rich habitat for nature & wildlife, and one of England’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. If you’re a keen twitcher, you’ll be in your element as birds including oystercatchers, lapwing and migratory waders make their home here.

EDEN VALLEY AND THE NORTH PENNINES

Unspoilt rolling green hills, picture perfect sandstone villages, stunning lakes and towering mountains: the Eden Valley and North Pennines is an impossibly beautiful corner of England. But don’t just take our word for it. The North Pennines has been designated both an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a UNESCO Global Geopark, meaning the geology of this extra special area is of international significance.

Whether you want calmness and serenity or an action-packed adventure, these epic landscapes offer the perfect place to reinvigorate. Absorb the tranquil atmosphere of Ullswater on board a traditional 'steam' boat, surrounded by the dramatic silhouette of Lakeland fells. Uncover the mysteries of sweeping valleys, criss crossed by drystone walls. Pedal along cycle routes including the Sea to Sea (C2C) and the Walney to Wear and Whitby (W2W).

The towns and villages of this peaceful place exude local charm. There are historic market towns like Appleby, Penrith and Alston (which shares the title of the highest market town in England); and friendly villages like Askham, Melmerby and Pooley Bridge. Many sit alongside prehistoric stone circles, mediaeval castles and ancient relics just waiting to be explored.

Shop local in our towns and city, and stop at independent cafes to warm up with a brew. Winter is a great time for a romantic staycation, to reconnect with loved ones, and get away from it all, with plenty of accommodation options to choose from.

There’s no shortage of festivals celebrating the great outdoors, either - which is hardly surprising given that the Lake District, Cumbria, is known for its natural beauty.

As the leaves turn gold, spook-tacular Halloween happenings and autumnal events like pumpkin picking are perfect combined with hot chocolate and hearty meals by open fire places. There are also lights festivals, lantern parades and celebrations for Bonfire Night.

In Winter, the wonders of the night sky take centre stage at our Dark Skies Festival. Then, it’s time to get festive at Christmas markets and lights switch ons, which take place against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and sparkling lakes.

"Many of Carlisle’s attractions are crammed into the city centre’s Historic Quarter. Within a few hundred yards you’ll find the castle, the cathedral, the acclaimed Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, and the medieval Guildhall and West Walls, plus an array of excellent independent cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops."

"My favourite spot in Lakeland is Crummock Water, particularly a bay at the Loweswater end which is known locally as Sant Yat (yat meaning gate). With the right blue sky and clear sun, which we often get, the beach looks like the West Indies."

DARK SKIES

Cumbria has some of the darkest skies in the whole of the UK, which makes it a dream destination for stargazing. Escape the everyday and immerse yourself in the galaxies above as velvet-like darkness envelops you.

Whether you’re a novice stargazer or an amateur astronomer, the Lake District, Cumbria, easily outshines the city lights for an autumn or winter holiday to remember. Get outdoors and breathe in the fresh country air, as you gaze across landscapes illuminated by the light of the stars.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The Milky Way and constellations like Orion’s Belt and Ursa Major are easily visible on a clear night. You may even be able to make out planets like Venus, which can be incredibly bright and easy to spot with the naked eye! If you get the timing right, you can even see the International Space Station.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR?

Each season has its benefits when it comes to experiencing our dark skies. In winter, you can enjoy earlier stargazing sessions thanks to the darker evenings. Witnessing a meteor shower such as the Quadrantids in January is an incredible experience.

Spring is a great time for stargazing. The weather is warming up but there are still long hours of darkness to see Orion and the stick figures of Gemini on a clear night.

Summer nights are warmer, with the balmy conditions making for a comfortable stargazing experience. Look out for the Perseids meteor shower in August.

Autumn is a good time for milder nights and darker evenings. This is a great time to see the Milky Way, when it is high overhead and spans much of the sky.

WHERE TO STARGAZE

With Cumbria’s low levels of light pollution, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to see the stars. Try the Dark Sky Discovery site of Low Gillerthwaite; Ennerdale; or the remote and beautiful Wasdale Valley. Asby Common in the Eden Valley is a wild, open space from which to experience the wonders of the night sky, while Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests have regular stargazing events for all the family to enjoy.

GETTING HERE

The Lake District, Cumbria, sits in England’s northwestern corner and is surprisingly quick and easy to reach via train, coach and of course, by car. As we look to reduce our carbon footprint, alternatives to using our cars will be increasingly popular.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to reach us! Make the journey part of the experience, and opt for a more eco-friendly way to travel.

RAIL

The West Coast Mainline transports visitors to the Lake District in just 2hrs 45 mins from London Euston, 2hrs from Glasgow, under 2.5hrs from Birmingham and 1.5hrs from Manchester. Alight at Oxenholme Lake District to connect with the Lakes Line for Central and Southern Lakes; Penrith for the North Lakes; and Carlisle for North Cumbria. Change at Lancaster or Carlisle for connections to Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian Coast.

CAR

You can reach Cumbria via the M6 motorway. Approximately 4hrs drive from London, 2hrs from the Midlands, 2.5hrs from Glasgow and 1.5hrs from Manchester. There is a network of EV charging points across the county, but it is worth checking before you travel.

GETTING AROUND

Once you’ve arrived, you can explore in a variety of ways. Why not use our public transport? Hop aboard an open top bus, take the train or even travel by boat so you can sit back and soak up the spectacular views. Get even closer to the landscape and travel by bicycle or on foot. Bikes, including e-bikes, and trampers too, are available to hire across the region. If bringing an electric vehicle there are plenty of charging points. Savour every moment. Make every journey count.

Our local train lines connect to the West Coast Mainline and can take you to Windermere, around the stunning Morecambe Bay, and along the entire length of the Cumbrian Coast. Buses, boats, bikes and boots can all help you explore further afield. Plus a day spent without your car helps to reduce carbon emissions and look after this beautiful area.

We have charming heritage transport options that are a day out in their own right. Steam and diesel trains take in estuary, woodland and mountains; while on the water, there are peaceful boat cruises on traditional vessels. Learn about our heritage transport options at museums across the county.

Travelling by bus offers a convenient way to explore: sit back, relax, and enjoy the view. Whether on the top deck of an opentop bus or tackling our mountain passes on a tour with a local guide. HORSE POWER

What better way to explore the landscape than on horseback? There are plenty of horse riding centres to choose from, offering lessons and treks for novice to experienced riders.

PEDAL POWER

Cumbria is made for cycling. The National Cycle Network offers many well sign-posted routes. Long-distance challenges include the Lakes & Dales Loop, Hadrian’s Wall, Pennine Cycleway, Coast-to-Coast (C2C), Bay Cycle Way and the Solway Coaster. For off-road mountain bike trails try Whinlatter, Grizedale and Lowther. Bring your own or hire wheels, including electric bikes.

Ferry takes cars, people, horses and cyclists across the lake, linking the eastern shore with the peaceful countryside on the west shore. It provides access to the thriving Lakeland villages of Coniston, Sawrey and Hawkshead.
