With over 2,000 years of history to discover, there’s more than enough to keep everyone entertained here - from award winning museums and Roman forts to farm parks and watersports.

Standing on the border with Scotland, Carlisle has seen its fair share of conflict across the years. Its imposing castle stands testament to its past, having witnessed events including the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots; and the last siege suffered by a fortress in England.

Today, the city seamlessly blends old and new: historic buildings and heritage attractions stand alongside modern shops, restaurants, and cafes. Here, you’ll find independent boutiques and high street brands; a vibrant nightlife with cosmopolitan bars and restaurants; and a bustling cafe scene. By day, relax and watch the world go by over coffee and cake; come evening, enjoy street food and creative cuisine made using local produce.

This is an area rich in history. In Carlisle, the mighty fortress of Carlisle Castle stands proud over the cityscape. Just a stone’s throw away from Carlisle is Hadrian’s Wall: a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to 122AD. Built to defend the north western frontier of the Roman Empire, it stretches for 73 miles from coast to coast.

#theperfectplacetobe 12

Take a restorative walk in Talkin Tarn Country Park: a peaceful oasis of calm just a stone’s throw from bustling Carlisle. The centrepiece is the glacial lake with an accessible path around its edge; it’s also a beautiful place for watersports and stargazing.

Officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Solway Coast is a rich habitat for nature & wildlife, and one of England’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. If you’re a keen twitcher, you’ll be in your element as birds including oystercatchers, lapwing and migratory waders make their home here.

MY FAVOURITE PLACE

G et off the beaten track to discover places that exude local character and tell a story of the landscape and communities living there. We asked some of our local experts to share their favourite places across the region.

CARLISLE’S HISTORIC QUARTER

"Many of Carlisle’s attractions are crammed into the city centre’s Historic Quarter. Within a few hundred yards you’ll find the castle, the cathedral, the acclaimed Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, and the medieval Guildhall and West Walls, plus an array of excellent independent cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops."

CRUMMOCK WATER

"My favourite spot in Lakeland is Crummock Water, particularly a bay at the Loweswater end which is known locally as Sant Yat (yat meaning gate). With the right blue sky and clear sun, which we often get, the beach looks like the West Indies."

WINDERMERE

"I am very fortunate to work in a special place like Windermere, and would advise everyone to visit Cumbria. We have mountains, lakes, waterfalls, caves and steam trains, plus so many more activities and surprises.

I love being out on the water. Fortunately, Cumbria and the Lake District has so much to choose from! If you’re looking for the finest mountain views on Windermere, head to the northern basin near Ambleside - the views of the Langdale Pikes never disappoint."

HUMPHREY HEAD, MORECAMBE BAY

"A limestone outcrop only 10 minutes from where I live: this is a place I visit for both walking on the top taking in the expansive views; and foraging around its base for rock samphire, marsh samphire and other sea vegetables. I love the expanse of the marshes and being so close to the water too!"

Whether you’re a novice stargazer or an amateur astronomer, the Lake District, Cumbria, easily outshines the city lights for an autumn or winter holiday to remember. Get outdoors and breathe in the fresh country air, as you gaze across landscapes illuminated by the light of the stars.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The Milky Way and constellations like Orion’s Belt and Ursa Major are easily visible on a clear night. You may even be able to make out planets like Venus, which can be incredibly bright and easy to spot with the naked eye! If you get the timing right, you can even see the International Space Station.

DARK SKY FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION

Relax and enjoy the stars from your accommodation. Choose from remote cottages beneath clear star-studded skies; shepherds huts with stargazing roofs; hotel rooms with telescopes included; and outdoor hot tubs where you can relax with a glass of fizz as you admire the galaxies above.

DARK SKIES FESTIVAL

Experience the wonders of the night sky at our Dark Skies Festival. A whole host of events shines a light on the magic of the skies above, from starlit wild swimming to outdoor dining; expert talks to photography workshops.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR?

Each season has its benefits when it comes to experiencing our dark skies. In winter, you can enjoy earlier stargazing sessions thanks to the darker evenings. Witnessing a meteor shower such as the Quadrantids in January is an incredible experience.

Spring is a great time for stargazing. The weather is warming up but there are still long hours of darkness to see Orion and the stick figures of Gemini on a clear night.

Summer nights are warmer, with the balmy conditions making for a comfortable stargazing experience. Look out for the Perseids meteor shower in August.

Autumn is a good time for milder nights and darker evenings. This is a great time to see the Milky Way, when it is high overhead and spans much of the sky.

WHERE TO STARGAZE

With Cumbria’s low levels of light pollution, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to see the stars. Try the Dark Sky Discovery site of Low Gillerthwaite; Ennerdale; or the remote and beautiful Wasdale Valley. Asby Common in the Eden Valley is a wild, open space from which to experience the wonders of the night sky, while Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests have regular stargazing events for all the family to enjoy.

Seasonal escapes made with the National Trust

Find the perfect escape and immerse yourself in dramatic landscapes, glorious gardens and historic houses all year round. nationaltrust.org.uk/thelakes

The Lake District is the perfect place to immerse yourself in dramatic landscapes, reconnect with nature and discover fascinating history. As well as England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike, and its deepest lake Wastwater, some of the Lakes’ most distinctive houses, glorious gardens and historical sites are looked after by the National Trust for you to enjoy all year round.

Beatrix Potter’s little farmhouse Hill Top is a must-see. The world-famous garden and surrounding landscape provided inspiration for her much-loved tales. Nearby in Hawkshead, the Beatrix Potter Gallery houses some of Beatrix’s original artwork and personal items.

If you’re a history buff, discover the gardens that first stirred William Wordsworth’s love of nature at his childhood home, Wordsworth House and Garden. Or make yourself at home and enjoy a picnic with a view at Allan Bank, which was once home to Wordsworth and fellow Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Plan a full day out and explore the ever-changing gardens, wildlife-filled estate and a house filled with 800 years of history at Sizergh. Or, discover miles of waymarked trails and woodland at Wray Castle on the shore of Windermere, with meals and snacks available at the café to fuel your adventures.

Take in the views across Windermere at Claife Viewing Station, framed by the same coloured glass that

captivated the Lake District’s first tourists. Follow in their footsteps and sail across Coniston Water in style on the traditional Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola Awaken your senses with a spring walk around Ullswater and see the thundering 65-foot waterfall at Aira Force. Or spend a lazy summer’s day rowing a boat across Windermere’s cool waters at Fell Foot Meander among tranquil gardens and orchards that are heaving with over 100 varieties of apples at Acorn Bank in autumn. During winter, sights of the Borrowdale and Buttermere fells dusted with snow are unbeatable. Find an atmospheric farmhouse full of history and a cosy cottage garden brimming with seasonal colour at Townend. Why not round off a day of with a pint in the Sticklebarn café? It’s the ideal refresher after a day of adventures on Langdale’s craggy summits.

Did you know… the National Trust cares for over 20% of the Lake District National Park. Every time you visit, donate, volunteer or join the National Trust, you help to look after the Lake District for future generations to enjoy.

Country homes and mansions such as Blackwell Arts & Crafts House offer a glimpse of life in a time gone by, and the chance to see heritage architecture and art as part of the buildings themselves. Within their grounds, wander landscaped gardens and attend events like markets and spring festivals.

project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Interpret our history in an impressive collection of museums, from the Lakeland Motor Museum to the Kendal Museum, telling the story of South Lakeland, from past to present.

There’s something for everyone, with family friendly events and exhibitions at modern museums like the Windermere Jetty Museum and arts venues like The Coro in Ulverston – so even the youngest of visitors can immerse themselves in our history, arts, and culture.

Given the beauty of our landscapes, it may come as no surprise that we also take art into the great

outdoors, with pieces to be seen in mountains and forests such as Grizedale, as part of planned exhibitions which work in harmony with the countryside. You can even try your hand at creating something special yourself, with workshops led by experienced instructors at venues like Farfield Mill in Sedbergh – there’s everything from music to storytelling.

TRAVEL

GETTING HERE

The Lake District, Cumbria, sits in England’s northwestern corner and is surprisingly quick and easy to reach via train, coach and of course, by car. As we look to reduce our carbon footprint, alternatives to using our cars will be increasingly popular.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to reach us! Make the journey part of the experience, and opt for a more eco-friendly way to travel.

RAIL

The West Coast Mainline transports visitors to the Lake District in just 2hrs 45 mins from London Euston, 2hrs from Glasgow, under 2.5hrs from Birmingham and 1.5hrs from Manchester. Alight at Oxenholme Lake District to connect with the Lakes Line for Central and Southern Lakes; Penrith for the North Lakes; and Carlisle for North Cumbria. Change at Lancaster or Carlisle for connections to Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian Coast.

CAR

You can reach Cumbria via the M6 motorway. Approximately 4hrs drive from London, 2hrs from the Midlands, 2.5hrs from Glasgow and 1.5hrs from Manchester. There is a network of EV charging points across the county, but it is worth checking before you travel.

GETTING AROUND

Once you’ve arrived, you can explore in a variety of ways. Why not use our public transport? Hop aboard an open top bus, take the train or even travel by boat so you can sit back and soak up the spectacular views. Get even closer to the landscape and travel by bicycle or on foot. Bikes, including e-bikes, and trampers too, are available to hire across the region. If bringing an electric vehicle there are plenty of charging points. Savour every moment. Make every journey count.

Our local train lines connect to the West Coast Mainline and can take you to Windermere, around the stunning Morecambe Bay, and along the entire length of the Cumbrian Coast. Buses, boats, bikes and boots can all help you explore further afield. Plus a day spent without your car helps to reduce carbon emissions and look after this beautiful area.

VINTAGE POWER

We have charming heritage transport options that are a day out in their own right. Steam and diesel trains take in estuary, woodland and mountains; while on the water, there are peaceful boat cruises on traditional vessels. Learn about our heritage transport options at museums across the county.

BUS POWER

HORSE POWER

What better way to explore the landscape than on horseback? There are plenty of horse riding centres to choose from, offering lessons and treks for novice to experienced riders.

MOTORHOMES & CAMPERVANS

Visiting in your motorhome or campervan? Choose from one of our many well equipped sites, park up, and get the kettle on! Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it here: there’s coast, woodland, lake and valley sites, all of varying sizes and facilities, so you can choose the one to suit you.

As well as wide, easily accessible roads, we also have narrow country lanes here in Cumbria. Luckily, most of them have passing places to avoid congestion; and it's important not to park in these, as well as avoiding narrow passes and single track roads wherever possible. Be careful to never block roads and gateways.

Why not be inspired by our Cumbrian Coastal Route 200? This 200 mile tour has been designed to help you explore this captivating and unique area. The route has been split into five smaller sections, each do-able in a day.

Once you’re parked up, why not explore like a local? Pick up food and drink in farm shops and delis; visit attractions telling the story of the area; relax in cosy pubs, restaurants and cafes; and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Our online guide has all the information you need to plan your next getaway to the Lake District, Cumbria, in your van visitlakedistrict.com/vanlife

YOUR OWN SPACE...

CAMPING

Get back to nature and sleep beneath the stars; wake up to coffee and an al fresco breakfast cooked fresh on the stove: there’s nothing quite like camping to reconnect and reset. There are plenty of campsites to choose from, with as many (or as few!) facilities as you like. Some are in remote valleys, others are on holiday parks with pools, shops and bars. You could even stay in a camping barn: an affordable option, great for larger groups.

HOSTELS

If you want an easy base for a walking holiday; somewhere to stay with a larger group; or a budget friendly option, a hostel could be the perfect choice. Whether dramatically located on the side of a fell, tucked away in a bustling town, or situated by a beautiful lake, our hostels offer budget-savvy travellers clean and basic comforts without having to compromise on location.

GLAMPING

Want to enjoy the camping experience, but also want a little touch of extra comfort and luxury? There are numerous glamping experiences across the region, from the comfortable and convenient to the downright quirky. Luxury yurts, shepherds huts, treehouses and even restored vintage train carriages…the possibilities are endless! Think comfy mattresses, plugs for your phone, private bathrooms and more. Many sites are eco friendly, too.

CARAVAN AND MOTORHOME SITES

Bringing your touring caravan or motorhome? With plenty of well equipped sites to park up in, all you need to do is choose your favourite, hook up and pop the kettle on! OK, you might want to book ahead too - from larger holiday parks with excellent facilities to smaller, more basic sites, there’s lots to choose from. QUALITY CUMBRIA & SUPERIOR AWARD

Quality Cumbria is a local assessment delivered by Cumbria Tourism. Although not star rated, accommodation is accredited to the National Quality Assurance Standards, ensuring they are safe, clean and comfortable.

ACCESSIBILITY

Cumbria offers many opportunities for less able visitors to enjoy this unique county. Many accommodation providers, restaurants and attractions cater for all needs and will happily accommodate specific requirements.

The Cumbria Tourism Awards celebrate the very best of the Cumbrian tourism industry. Held in July at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal, the 2022 event was a glittering celebration of local pride - and there were more than a few food & drink winners!

Natural

In Cumbria there’s more to water, from clouds up high to hill and fell and mountain side Flowing deep for years, nature purifies on its journey to finding you Bottle it up, guzzle it down, Bathe the hills and quench the town

For this is Aqua, nothing purer With an eco-friendly cap, to reassure you Crush it down, take it back We’ll make plenty more with that So take a sip of Cumbria, Go Out, Go Far, Go Live
