Eine Kommune, die Lebensräume für Flora und Fauna schafft und so dem Verlust der Artenvielfalt entgegensteuert – die „Urbane Wildnis“ ist für die Deutschen laut einer repräsentativen Studie der Bertelsmann Stiftung die bevorzugte Vision der Stadt der Zukunft. Auf Platz zwei kommt das Konzept der „Abfallfreien Stadt“, das sich am Prinzip der Kreislaufwirtschaft orientiert.
A representative survey by the Bertelsmann Foundation has shown that for Germans, the preferred vision of the city of the future involves urban rewilding, where a community creates habitats for flora and fauna and thus counters the loss of species diversity. The second most favoured concept is the “zero-waste city” based on the principle of the circular economy.
Schon von Weitem glitzert er in der Sonne: der „LUMA Tower“ in der südfranzösischen Stadt Arles. Auf den ersten Blick scheint das Bauwerk auf dem LUMAKunstkampus wie ein Fremdkörper inmitten der malerischen Umgebung. Bei näherem Hinsehen offenbaren sich jedoch lokale Bezüge, die Stararchitekt Frank Gehry in seinen Entwurf einfließen ließ. So erinnert das runde Atrium an das antike Amphitheater von Arles. Die Fassade mit ihren Vor- und Rücksprüngen nimmt die Form der Alpillen auf, der Bergkette, die nordöstlich der Stadt aufragt. Für die silberne Verkleidung aus 11.000 Edelstahlplatten stand Gehry das glänzende Werk Vincent van Goghs Pate, der im nahe gelegenen Saint-Rémy-de-Provence das bekannte Gemälde „Die Sternennacht“ schuf. Ein schillerndes architektonisches Statement, das das renommierte „AD Magazin“ als eines der herausragenden „Works of Wonder“ im vergangenen Jahr auszeichnete.

Even from afar, the “LUMA Tower”, located in Arles in southern France, sparkles in the sunshine. At first glance, the structure on the LUMA creative campus seems like an alien edifice amidst the picturesque surroundings. But a closer look reveals the local references that award-winning architect Frank Gehry incorporated into his design. The circular atrium, for example, is reminiscent of the Roman amphitheatre of Arles. The facade, with its projections and recesses, mimics the contours of the Alpilles, the mountain range that rises to the northeast of the city. For the silver cladding, consisting of 11,000 stainless steel panels, Gehry took his inspiration from Van Gogh’s masterpiece “Starry Night”, which the artist painted in nearby SaintRémy-de-Provence. It is a dazzling architectural statement recognised by the renowned Architectural Digest (AD) as one of the outstanding “Works of Wonder” in 2022.
