Chamber Chair Message When I was first assigned to be on the board of the Chamber, I wasn’t even sure of the purpose of the Chamber of Commerce. As a Pleasant Grove City Planning Commissioner at the time, I knew we needed to communicate and understand the needs of the businesses, but beyond that, I had so much to learn. I was first impressed by the motto of the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce: “Relationships Matter.” As I met members and learned more, I was inspired by how the business owners were interested in strengthening and supporting each other in their goals. I have gained a better understanding of marketing, finances, management and leadership from the other chamber members. As a home-based business owner and employee of Pleasant Grove City, my membership in the Chamber of Commerce has positively impacted my career and my family. Whether it is a golf tournament, awards ceremony, Lunch and Learn or

networking opportunity, we plan with purpose. Seeing that caring and collaboration can thrive even amidst healthy business competition is refreshing in a world that can seem selfish and divided. So much that goes on in the world is out of our control, but being a part of an organization dedicated to strengthening each other and our community is meaningful and makes a difference in our corner of the world. A big focus of the chamber is working together to give back to our Pleasant Grove and Lindon communities. One of our newest traditions is a silent auction that raises funds to give back to the youth in our community. As the prevention coordinator for Pleasant Grove City, I research the issues affecting our youth and understand the protective power of a strong and unified community. I am proud to be a part of this organization. The Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber strives to be an example

of teamwork and truly embodies the phrase “Relationships Matter.”

Message from the President As president of the Chamber of Commerce for Pleasant Grove and Lindon, I am fortunate to be able to work with both city councils and mayors, city staff, business leaders and community organizations for the benefit of our communities and the business community. Both the Pleasant Grove and Lindon communities are seeing tremendous growth, and we are striving to achieve great success and work toward common goals. These successes cannot be achieved without the help of our passionate members, outstanding business volunteers and board members. Thank you. The Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1910. As it was then, the chamber is an advocate for the business community and actively supports economic development in both our cities, promoting businesses, our communities and our motto “Where Relationships Matter” as part of building a better environment for all. The Chamber’s core mission and values are to promote businesses, community growth and development through

networking, advocacy and education. We strive to be the “Community Chamber” that understands relationships help all of us become better through our continued support of each other. The Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce understands that to have a strong economic environment, you must first have a strong community. We are truly blessed in our communities to have leaders, business owners, educators and citizens who realize we all share in the responsibility for creating economic success and happiness in both our communities. We had a great year last year and look forward to a wonderful 2022. We are looking ahead to working with both cities on their celebrations, community events, ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, luncheons and so much more. So, stay tuned and watch for upcoming events hosted by the Chamber. Also, I would like say congratulations to all our great business award winners this past year and thank you for your support, community support and outreach to all. We are truly blessed to

have you be part of our cities. Congrats! We look forward to continuing meaningful relationships and another fantastic year with all of you. Eric Jensen President Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

2022 Chamber Awards Gala

This year was our second annual Chamber Awards Gala. Held at Stone Gate Weddings and Events, we had a wonderful dinner accompanied by the Svengali Jazz Quartet and Connor Ross’ musical performance. Our silent auction items this year were supplied by local Chamber businesses, and the proceeds went to Pleasant Grove High School’s KPGR audio/visual department and the Lindon City Youth Police Academy and Youth Council. We enjoyed being able to all get together to recognize some of the great businesses that have shown their involvement and dedication to our communities, and we look forward to continuing this event in years to come.

Chamber History

16 www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

Celebrating 112 years The first public announcement of a commercial club in Pleasant Grove was published in the American Fork Citizen on Dec. 31, 1909. It announced that a “Booster’s Club” was to meet and that officers would be elected the following month. Men anxious to promote business in Pleasant Grove gathered at the City Hall, which was the soft-rock building at 105 S. 100 East. There, they formed, adopted and signed a constitution in January of 1910. The club was known by three names from 1910 to 1924: • Boosters Club: 1910 to 1913. • Commercial Club: 1914 to 1921. • Wasatch Club: 1921 to 1924. On May 28, 1924, the group incorporated into the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce and continued for

a period of 50 years with a yearly membership fee of $1. It was the second such organization in Utah County. In 1997, conceding that the main function of the combined chamber’s business (as it always had been) was to help generate and retain businesses in the towns, they began working to form business partnerships, employers with employees, and get them all involved in the chamber’s efforts. They formed the Downtown Merchants Association. The dual-city group accomplished so much through the year to enhance the two communities that neighboring chambers came to them for advice on how they could do so much with so little in finances. Volunteerism, cooperation and caring about their communities have gone a long way in their successful achievements.

Chamber Gala Silent Auction Donations Through money raised during a silent auction held at the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Awards Gala, the chamber was able to award donations to the PGHS Audio/Visual Class and the Lindon Police Youth Academy.

PLEASANT GROVE HIGH SCHOOL AUDIO VISUAL CLASS The Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce was excited on March 18 to attend and present a $2,500 check to the Pleasant Grove High School Vikings KPGR/Audio Visual Class during its film festival. What a great way for our member businesses to share and express the impact these students can have in the business community with such a wide range of talents. We are very passionate in building relationships that foster a better community. We are excited for them and are truly thankful for all those that made this happen. Thank you to Water Gardens Cinema 6 for hosting and letting these students showcase their many talents.

LINDON POLICE YOUTH ACADEMY The Lindon City Police Department has started a Youth Police Academy to provide an opportunity for high-schoolaged students to learn about the roles and responsibilities of a police officer. The academy is a five-week program structured to give hands-on experience to participants/cadets interested in a potential career in law enforcement and other criminal justice fields. Officers within the department teach aspects of police work such as patrol

18 www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

functions, investigations, crime scenes, firearms and officer safety. A majority of the academy is scenario based. After graduation from the academy, cadets will be given the opportunity to serve in the community during various city events, furthering their experience. If interested, they are welcome to become mentors for future youth academies. This academy also creates an environment for officers to build relationships with the youth of our communities. Those relationships are invaluable for our officers as they work to build trust and improve our level of service. We have been humbled by the support given to the academy by the Lindon City mayor and city council members along with the Pleasant Grove - Lindon Chamber of Commerce. We look forward to building on the success of our current cadets and plan to hold the academy annually. Information for future academy courses will be provided through social media and local high schools.

Pleasant Grove Mayor’s Message In 1850, the early settlers of Pleasant Grove were attracted to this area because of a small grove of trees that gave them the promise of hope and a land with water and rich soil. What attracted you to Pleasant Grove? Was it the appeal of safe neighborhoods that brought you here? A recently published study listed Pleasant Grove as one of the safest cities in Utah. The report stated, “Pleasant Grove is one of the best places to live in Utah. Living in Pleasant Grove offers residents a dense suburban feel, and most residents own their homes. There are a lot of parks. Many families and young professionals live in Pleasant Grove and residents tend to be conservative. The public schools here are above average.” Was it the proximity to retail, restaurant and businesses that brought you here? We have witnessed several companies open their doors, and many more are in the works. Most notably, a prominent electric car manufacturer announced they will be building a dealership here soon. Perhaps you are excited about UTOPIA building a fiber network. Last year,

they began constructing the backbone; they are now working on the infrastructure and plan to be fully installed by June 2023. Some of our residents could see service as early as the end of this year. We are excited to offer anyone this optional light-speed connectivity. Maybe you chose Pleasant Grove because you thought it was a great place to raise a family. Well, I agree. My family has been here for several generations. With the generous donation of the Cook Family Foundation, plans are underway to erect a gorgeous and spacious park in place of the old pipe plant. It’s going to be a family-friendly park like no other. The amenities will attract all ages. Maybe you heard about another attraction recently announced: The Hale Center Theater. Relocating from Orem, this spectacular event center will be built near doTERRA. Of course, we will be making changes to accommodate this growth. Plans are in the works to widen the road and add more lanes at the I-15 interchange. Plus, extensive efforts are already underway to improve our existing roads. The city council has approved a $17.8 million

budget for road projects during the next three years. You can find detailed information and a timeline for those projects on our city website. No matter the reason you chose to live here, I welcome you and I’m glad you are one of us. I hope you enjoy living in Pleasant Grove as much as I do. Guy L. Fugal Pleasant Grove Mayor

Pleasant Grove’s Main Street has long history By Laurel Cunningham Pleasant Grove Historic Preservation Commission On Nov. 11, 1918, the Pleasant Grove Cannery whistle unexpectedly blew and the town curfew bell on top of the Old Bell School rang out — both continuously and simultaneously. Desperate to know the cause of this alarm, residents picked up their party-line telephones and called the town telephone operator to ask what had happened. The operator excitedly announced into one line after another that Germany had surrendered and World War I was over. Soon the whole town knew the news and

24 www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

rushed to Main Street to celebrate in the street. Pleasant Grove’s Main Street has always been the center and heart of the town and is one of its oldest spaces. Over this district’s 169-year history, it has been the gathering place for town residents — not only to celebrate in the street marking the end of a war, but also to purchase goods and materials and to attend July 4th parades, Strawberry Days street dances and parades, and political rallies. This center of town got its start in 1853 when residents built a fort in response to warfare with local Native Americans and moved their houses within the fort walls.

Main Street was the center of that fort, and it was surrounded by 16 city blocks. As Indian relations improved, residents built outside the fort, but the fort (and Main Street) remained the nucleus of the town and its development. Elisha Wilcox was the first to operate a commercial business on Main Street. In about 1854, he established an exchange station on the corner of 100 N. Main. George H.A. Harris followed suit and built a store in the late 1850s on the northeast corner of Main where he and Jacob Foutz ran a freight company. In 1869, John Brown purchased the southeast corner of 100 S. Main and organized the Pleasant Grove Cooperative Mercantile. The Harris store anchored commerce on the north end of Main Street, and Brown’s Mercantile/Co-op anchored the south end of Main Street. As the decades passed, numerous stores came and went from Main Street (a few of them destroyed by fire). Long-time residents will remember past store names such as Smith Market, Clark Brothers’ Store, Ideal Market, Mason’s Clothing, Radmall’s Hardware, Hedquist Drug, Wagstaff’s Clothing, Red and White Market, the Pleasant Grove Review, Bank of Pleasant Grove, Busy

Corner Store, Christensen’s Clothing, Paul’s Appliance, Doug’s Radio and TV Service, The Cobbler’s Bench, Jackman Electronics, Hap’s Lunch, the Luncheonette Café, the Alhambra Theater, Dixon Taylor Russell Furniture, Utah Power and Light, Christensen’s Clothing, the Ben Franklin Store and The Spot. Main Street has also been home to unique commercial ventures such as an opera house, a movie theater, one of the oldest saloons in Utah, an on-sidewalk gas pump, a fire station, two hotels and city hall (which housed a jail and ambulance service). In 1995, Main Street (and the streets that were once within the fort) were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. This district provides Pleasant Grove with a distinct sense of place, and the heritage of the community is reflected in the commercial, public and residential buildings within its boundaries. For more information about Main Street’s history, pick up a Main Street walking tour booklet published by the Pleasant Grove Historic Commission at city hall. Also, follow the Historic Preservation Commission’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PGHistoric for even more Pleasant Grove history.

Candidates compete in the areas of private interview, talent, social impact initiative, on-stage question and evening wear. During the evening of competition, more than $12,000 in scholarship and prize money is awarded. Our current Miss Pleasant Grove is Haylie Howe, daughter of Alan and Koleen Howe. Haylie has lived in Pleasant Grove all her life and loves serving her favorite community! Haylie has danced for more than 17 years and was a member of the drill team and Dance Company at Pleasant Grove High School. She graduated in 2020 and is finishing up her sophomore year at Brigham Young University where she is studying business with an emphasis in experience design and management. Haylie’s Social Impact Initiative is “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.” Through this initiative, she spreads her passion for literacy to young students and adults. She has spent her year of service by teaching the community about the importance of literacy by hosting monthly “Meet the Authors,” events, posting weekly “Sunday Reading Question” videos, and building/managing two Little Free Libraries in Pleasant Grove and Lindon. She has enjoyed tutoring at the Pleasant Grove Library where she has helped children increase their reading proficiency. Little Miss Strawberry Days Little Miss Strawberry Days is an amazing experience for young girls in our community. It gives them the opportunity to serve alongside the Miss Pleasant Grove Royalty and participate in the many activities of Strawberry Days as well as other events throughout the year. This contest began in the early years of Strawberry Days. In the beginning, photos of Little Miss Strawberry Days participants were put up around town. The citizens would vote for their favorite contestant with pennies. The criteria for participation have changed a bit since the days of “penny” voting. Today, each contestant must write a one-page essay specific to a theme. The essay must be in the words and language of the participant. Typically, there are more than 35 contestants that turn in essays based on the theme for that year. The essays are read and chosen by an independent panel of judges who are looking for attention to the theme, originality and creativity. Members of the 2021 Little Miss Strawberry Days Royalty are: Paisley

Petersen, daughter of Christopher and Brittani Petersen; Brynlee Contreras, daughter of Matias and Joshalyn Contreras; Zoey Fullen, daughter of Brian and Trisha Fullen; Adalie Hardman, daughter of Josh Hardman and Adrianne Hardman; and Kenadie Petersen, daughter of Mark and Kelly Petersen. These young women have served

our community with great energy and attitudes! The 2022 Little Miss Strawberry Days winners were announced at the Miss Pleasant Grove competition on April 16, 2022, too late for this printing. Look for them as they serve Pleasant Grove during Strawberry Days and throughout 2022.

Pleasant Grove Economic Development Grove District experiencing healthy growth By Daniel Cárdenas Pleasant Grove City Community Development Director I have always considered the Grove District of Pleasant Grove City the heart of Utah County. The Grove District is the area located east of Exit 275 on Interstate 15, and the arteries pumping blood into the area are two main boulevards, Pleasant Grove Boulevard and North County Boulevard. If we could transport ourselves five years in the past to walk around the area and compare it with the current state, we would be surprised by the many positive changes and developments in the zone. Five years ago, there were no restaurants in this area. Our foodie residents had to travel to other cities to get their

fix. Now, we have a variety of about 15 different restaurants, and the list keeps growing. Just in the last year, we have added Dutch Bros, Happy Teriyaki, Da Cloud Boba Shoppe and Under Wraps, and we are working on the ribbon cutting for Summit Pizza and Graze Craze in the next couple of months. Keeping with this exciting trend, we are also happy to announce that Slim Chickens will be joining us in the Grove District, and we have other restaurants in the works that are coming to be part of our community. We know that the pandemic affected on a great scale the economic growth of certain commercial activities; however, Pleasant Grove City maintained steady economic growth by adding a variety

Giving your vehicles the love they need.

Daniel Cárdenas of business in the Grove Zone along the boulevards and along State Street, including office space. Just in the last month, we were excited to finalize and approve plans for a new five-story tower providing around 150,000 square feet of office space. This is a great symptom that the area keeps growing in an economically healthy fashion. Some other exciting new projects are coming to our city. Recently, we heard the news that The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is coming to Pleasant Grove, and we will start working on developing 47 acres of commercial land along I-15. The area of the Grove keeps proving to be the heart of Utah County, and we are witnessing that the heart of Utah County is healthy and beating hard.

PG Cares offers help to community Do you know what to say if someone you love is struggling with thoughts of suicide? Do you know what basic needs must be addressed to build resilience in our youth? Do you know how to identify and express your emotions (even anger) in a way that can strengthen family relationships? Utah is an amazing place to live, but we also have our issues. Utah is sixth in the nation for suicide rates, with youth and young adult suicide rates rising. One in four kids face some level of sexual abuse, and those are only the reported numbers. We also struggle with higher than national average levels of addiction and overdose deaths, often beginning with prescription opioids. Youth vaping rates have been rising with kids becoming nicotine dependent without even realizing what chemicals they are inhaling from a fruity flavored vape device. While this can seem heavy and hard to swallow, we know there is so much hope and so many resources available. As we shine a light on our struggles, we also learn how to face them together. Two years ago, the leadership of Pleasant Grove City took the necessary steps to obtain a grant from Utah County to start a Communities that Care Coalition. Created by the Univer-

sity of Washington Social Development Research Group, this coalition model is proven to strengthen communities. We decided on the name “PG Cares’’ to spread the message that Pleasant Grove cares about these very real issues we face as families. As a evidence-based coalition, PG Cares works to reduce the risks of addiction, abuse and suicide in the community. Prevention science has been around for decades, and the State of Utah is now prioritizing community level prevention work. Research shows that local prevention efforts are the most impactful. The Utah State Legislature has earmarked funds for local, evidence-based prevention work, and PG Cares has been awarded multiple grants to implement educational classes and run prevention campaigns right here in our community. Each class is carefully researched and chosen because of

the data that we gather to understand our specific struggles here in Pleasant Grove. Each instructor is fully trained by our partner organizations to teach the skills and lead the discussions that help us tackle tough issues as families and neighbors. We encourage families, businesses, churches and schools to join us in our prevention efforts. Our new website has more information about prevention science, trusted resources and partners, and educational classes we provide at no cost to the community. Sign up for a class or request that we bring professionally developed training to your organization. Ask us about the resources available and find support when those we love are hurting or in crisis. We are passionate about community education and supporting each other in even the most difficult situations. It takes a village, and we know that PG is one of the very best.

Restoring Pleasant Grove’s G A large portion of the history of the G was taken from a series of news articles written by E. Mark Bezzant for The Pleasant Grove Review in 1994 in recognition of the G’s 75th anniversary as well as the Timpanogos Times in 2020 recognizing the 100th anniversary of the G. Bezzant was the debate coach at Pleasant Grove High School in 1979. He and the Varsity Debate Team researched and complied the history of the G. One-hundred and two years! That is how long the G has been on the mountain! In the spring of 1920, the world had just suffered the effects of the Spanish Flu along with the first world war. One can only imagine the insurmountable grief and suffering from both of those historic events. It’s no wonder that David Gourley, then principal of Pleasant Grove High School, had the brilliant idea to try to rally the students. Given the high school was about to get a new building, Gourley asked the student body if they would like to see a letter G placed on

the mountain to coincide with the new school. Back then, the student body called themselves the Grovarians – hence the letter G. Several styles of the G were discussed, but, to keep the same look as the letterman jackets, the block G won the vote. Junius Hayes, a math teacher at the high school, wore many hats as he was also the mayor of Pleasant Grove and an accomplished surveyor. He enlisted the help of the senior class and hiked up the mountain to determine the best placement of the G. They chose to build the G in the middle of “Little Mountain” just above the first flats. Sie Kemp, a local barber and self-taught architect, also helped develop a model of the block G. So, on May 10, 1920, Principal Gourley gave approval of the design and permitted those students who had enough credits to hike up with their picks, axes, shovels and grubbing hoes to clear the site. In only one day, the entire area for this massive letter was cleared. Rocks were placed in the area. According to one senior, Paul Adam-

34 www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

son, “The whole mountain was covered with kids carrying rocks.” Charlie Holman, another student at the school, thought it might be better to use wheelbarrows. Ed Warburton took his horse and helped Charlie up the mountain with his wheelbarrow. Principal Gourley loved this idea and directed others to get their wheelbarrows to quicken the work. Pack horses were also used to carry up lime, a barrel and a spray pump. Each year following the establishment of this icon, a day was set aside to go refurbish the block letter. Seniors were given a “sluff” day by the Board of Education for “G Day” to maintain their work of art. The first lighting of the G occurred in the spring of 1927. The high school basketball team was headed into the state tournament led by Coach Harry Richards. Students thought that lighting the G would raise school spirit. They began gathering cans, rags and crankcase oil. Once they arrived at the G, cans were placed around the outer edge of the letter. Some oil and a rag were placed in each can; the rags were intended to act as a wick and the oil was the fuel. They quickly raced down the mountain to see how it looked from below. Since its construction, there have been numerous times the G has had to face repairs. Some people even

Allreds threatened to remove it, deeming it an eyesore. Luckily, several defenders of the G stepped up to keep it alive. This year, we are borrowing the idea from our neighboring Y mountain to improve the G more substantially. Plans are underway to fill in the G completely with concrete and to embed LED lights into the structure. A joint committee has been formed comprising members of the Alpine School District and representatives of the City of Pleasant Grove. The mayor plans to spearhead the construction efforts alongside Horrocks Engineers. Pleasant Grove High School has already begun fundraising efforts. Like in 1920, it will take a community to rebuild this landmark. If you’d like to contribute to this endeavor, please donate using the QR code on this page or visit the high school to make an in-person donation.

Lindon Mayor’s Message I am very excited for all the positive opportunities and events that are unfolding here in our wonderful city of Lindon. As a new mayor, I am grateful to really see the inside workings that keep our city services and amenities going at such a high level on a daily basis. I wish each citizen could know just how our amazing quality of life is maintained and enhanced because of the incredible hard work that staff and community volunteers bring to our community. From public works employees, who plow snow or fix broken water lines in the middle of the night so we may have our roads and showers available when we need to get ready for and travel to work and school, to senior center staff and volunteers who served more than 14,770 drive-through meals during the COVID pandemic, we truly live in a fantastic community. In an increasingly distracting digital world, one of the most important initiatives in 2022 is to continue developing our youth by building character, providing leadership and service opportunities, and encouraging love of community. We recently highlighted artwork representing more than 100 students who learned about and drew one of 12 character traits or values. These are now available as a free, printed calendar that

can be picked up at the city center. Our Little Miss Lindon and Junior Rodeo Royalty provide amazing service and assist at charitable drives and events throughout the year. In March, our police department kicked off the first-ever Youth Police Academy where young people learned about all aspects of law enforcement. These youth will be helping with various upcoming events. I am excited to announce we will begin a Lindon City Youth Council this May. Look for more information to come about that soon! In addition, Lindon will have its own Farmers Market beginning this summer in which youth entrepreneurs can have a free booth selling their homemade and homegrown goods. Finally, although there is much to celebrate, we all are concerned about sad events happening around the world as well as the inflation and economic impacts being felt by all families. Please know that your city council, mayor and staff take the responsibility to keep Lindon safe, well-managed and financially sound very seriously. Strategically looking forward to maintain our core infrastructure and services as well as supporting our businesses are key factors in the health of our local

economy and the health and well-being of our citizens. As we intentionally support one another, whether it is through buying local, volunteering, mentoring youth or living lives of good character, we can truly be blessed by greater relationships and connection. Thank you to the Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce for this magazine and its mission to build a better community. Carolyn Lundberg Lindon Mayor

History of Lindon

The early settlers of Utah began to spread throughout the area after their arrival to Utah in 1847. The first pioneers came to Pleasant Grove on Sept. 13, 1850. At that time, Pleasant Grove encompassed all of the area from American Fork Canyon to Provo Canyon. As the population grew, some residents began to spread south along the trail. This area was then called “Stringtown.” This began in about 1861. Certain events occurred that encouraged the growth. The transcontinental railroad connected at Promontory Point on May 10, 1869, which led to further railroad connection south into Utah County. This growth made mail delivery more necessary. Mail was delivered to Lindon at a point along State Street near a large linden tree (on the west side of the street near the bottom on the hill). The first post office was then opened in the Cullimore store just across the street on Sept. 25, 1889. This area be-

Inside the Cullimore Mercantile store came a very important place in Lindon, not only for mail delivery but also for the name of the city and the area incorporated when the city was granted incorporation in March of 1924. Evidently, the area was described as near the “linden tree” was misspelled and Lindon was accepted as the area’s incorporated name. Lindon will celebrate its centennial of incorporation in 2024. Interestingly, The Church of Jesus

Walker’s Service, Lindon’s first gas station 38 www.pglindonchamber.org | Pleasant Grove-Lindon Chamber of Commerce

Christ of Latter-day Saints recently announced plans to build a temple In Lindon. The groundbreaking ceremony was set for April 23, 2022. The construction time is estimated at two years, meaning the temple will be complete, also, in 2024. Another celebration. That early mail area also became an important place for travel. When a privately owned and constructed, all-electric railway was completed, it ran from Salt Lake City south through all the cities to Payson. This system was way ahead of its time. It ran to Provo by 1912 and on to Payson in 1916. A person could comfortably travel for 1.5 pennies per mile, all on comfortable and beautiful cushioned seating. Many came to the Lindon stop near the current pharmacy and were transported by local horse and wagon to the Geneva Resort (on the east shore of Utah Lake). It offered good food, music and entertainment, a 50-foot-high waterslide, dancing and even an opportunity to hand-feed a wandering black bear. Lindon continues to grow. It’s home to good people and fun places to be and offers great views of the mountains and valley. Those early settlers laid a great foundation for us. May we continue to build on it.

We will also have a Cowgirl Clinic that evening. This provides an opportunity for kids to ride a horse or learn to rope. On Tuesday, we are bringing back Bingo. Bingo is geared to promote our wonderful Senior Center. Bring a senior citizen to get into the event. In the early evening, we are excited to be partnering with Utah Roundnet. They will host an all-skill level Spike Ball tournament at Pheasant Brook Park. Later that evening, we will head to Pioneer Park for our City Council Ice Cream Social and Movie in the Park. On Wednesday, our Huck Finn Fishing event will provide a fun evening at Fryer Park. Fishing will be done via hand or net only. Please leave your poles at home. All fish caught must go home. We’ll also have our tie-dye booth open. Bring a white shirt to tie-dye that night or purchase one at the stand. On Thursday, we will head to the Lindon Horse Arena for our Family Arena events. New this year will be adult stick pony racing. Sign up to ride a stick pony or sign your child up to participate in mutton bustin’. Registration can be done at lindonrecreation.org. Lindon growing and planning for more By Mike Florence Lindon City Planning & Economic Development Director With all of the setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s interesting to look back over the past 18 to 24 months and see the resiliency that has come from the business and development community. Similar to most municipalities, entitlements and construction projects for both commercial and residential only slowed slightly for a time and many businesses saw increases in sales. While the pandemic has been extremely impactful, many commercial

businesses in Lindon seemed to have weathered the time well. Lindon is an innovative community that works hard to respect the city’s past traditions while also having a plan in place for growth and development. While the city has a population of 12,000 residents, the city also has a strong industrial and commercial sector with more than 800 commercial businesses that generate more than 15,000 daily jobs. Over the past five years, developers have constructed approximately two million square feet of office/warehouse space and nearly one million square feet of office and commercial space.

Mike Florence Developers have also constructed more than 450 single family and townhome residential units as well as 44 accessory apartments. One of the new projects that Lindon City has recently worked on or is ready to kick off is a new 700 N. Corridor Master Plan and general plan update. In April 2021, the Lindon City Council adopted the 700 N. Corridor Master Plan. This corridor is envisioned as a gateway to Lindon City and will foster unique experiences where the community can gather. The corridor is envisioned to develop with community spaces, retail, restaurants, an employment center, services and other experiential attractions to create an environment for a live-workplay community. Finally, in April, Lindon City will kick-off the process of updating its General Plan. The General Plan will help plan and guide growth, economic development, transportation and recreation in the community for the next 10 years. The city looks forward to maintaining its unique identity and providing great resources to its residents, businesses and visitors.

Aquatics Center adding new water slide Something big is coming! Lindon City is very excited to open a new waterslide at the Lindon Aquatics Center this summer! The Aquatics Center opened back in 2009 and has been the favorite pool ever since. It has always been unique pool with amenities that are not found at other facilities like the large lazy river or the FlowRider. The surfacing machine is the only public outdoor FlowRider in the state! The Lindon City Council approved

this great addition to the aquatics center after 13 summers of great family fun. Alan Walker, a Lindon resident, fulltime pool manager and continuous employee since its opening in 2009, said, “It was time to add another amenity to this great facility. After going through a list of project possibilities, this slide was selected to help renew excitement for the facility and another fun ride.” The new waterslide is 30 feet tall, which is double the height of the current waterslide, and it will be very

fast! Riders should go really fast and, with the translucent bands, it will create a unique riding experience and something everyone will have to experience themselves. With the addition of this slide, the Aquatics Center will have four waterslides in total. This project was funded in part by the Lindon City PARC Tax and will be a great addition to the Aquatics Center. Opening day for the Lindon Aquatics Center and the new slide will be May 28.
