IN SEARCH OF TRUTH EVEN as the Zambian government uses diplomatic channels to defuse the lies that President Edgar Lungu is funding Rwandese insurgents fighting the government of President Paul Kagame, those fanning the stories must be exposed and punished. We are glad that State House has assured that Government is dealing with the Rwanda allegations through diplomatic channels, and that people should avoid making more wild allegations on the matter. Special assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Isaac Chipampe said State House was concerned that despite stating its position on allegations purported to have come out of a court trial in Rwanda, some citizens have continued with wild speculations and accusations on the matter. But the concern for most Zambians is about those people who are behind the fake stories that threaten the country’s security. It is in this vein that we agree with retired Major Richard Kachingwe that security forces should quickly establish the source of the false story alleging that President Lungu was financing terrorist activities in Rwanda and deal with the people involved. Maj Kachingwe, a forrmer UPND presidential advisor, said people behind the false allegations against the Head of State must be brought to book because they were putting the security of the nation at risk. He said perpetrators of the news were treading on dangerous ground because it was not only putting the President at risk but the entire nation. “The Rwandan story makes very sad reading and it is important for the security wings, ZICTA and IBA to swing into action and establish the real source of the story. If a media outlet will be found wanting they should be heavily punished on behalf of Zambians,” Maj Kachingwe said. In our view, we feel these are sinister forces at play who will go to any length in their quest to get into power. They are even prepared to dine with the devil in their evil machinations to get to State House. Like we noted yesterday, what would Zambia gain from promoting instability in Rwanda? Absolutely nothing. Yet, this is what desperate individuals want Zambians and the international community to believe, that President Lungu is funding unrest in that country. It is preposterous that President Lungu’s political opponents could sink so low as to want to poison the warm relations between Zambia and Rwanda. It is important therefore that those behind such lies are exposed and prosecuted in courts of law for the nation and international community to see who they really are. One of Zambia’s attributes since the country’s independence has been her foreign policy which promotes peaceful co-existence with her neighbours. This is what all successive governments have worked on, with success. And it is for this reason that those running away from persecution in their home countries have found safe haven here. Zambia has always been an honest broker, thus winning the respect of her neighbours. It is pleasing though that Zambians have also come out strongly to defend the President, with two veteran politicians describing the allegations against President Lungu as a witch hunt by certain opposition political leaders trying to dent his image in the African region and the globe. Former Defence Minister, George Mpombo, and former Foreign Affairs Minister, Katele Kalumba, said such manoeuvres were well known because certain opposition leaders were power angry thereby trying all means to discredit the Head of State. The allegations against President Lungu must be approached with level headedness and Zambians should do well to heed the advice from State House - to allow the due process of the diplomatic channels. For in the end, the truth will prevail.

HH farm workers charged with murder appear in court

THREE suspected PF cadres were yesterday detained by Police after they tried to break a security cordon mounted at the Lusaka Magistrate court to stop unruly behaviour at the court. The Police had cordoned off the area to stop any confusion by supporters and sympathisers of Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya who was appearing for plea at the court. Police officers on foot and horse backs in full riot gear, led by Deputy Inspector of Police Bonny Kapeso were deployed at the court to maintain order. This followed last week’s incident where scores of PF cadres and sympathisers caused confusion at the court as Dr Chilufya appeared to take plea in the matter he is charged with four counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Robert Kennedy Close, Off Brentwood Avenue, denied all four charges that were read to him by Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale. Chilufya is in count one alleged to have on a date unknown but between December

As stated on Tuesday, he said, State House maintains that the allegations purported to have been submitted to a Rwandan court are false and the Zambian government is dealing with the matter through diplomatic channels with Rwanda. “State House would therefore, like to advise all citizens, including the media to allow the due process of the diplomacy to take its course without speculations and further unwarranted allegations,” Mr Chipampe said.

‘Mopani operations to continue’ From page 1 Company acting Chief Executive Officer Charles Sakanya, said his firm has put in place measures which would create a win - win situation for all stakeholders. Mr. Sakanya made the assurance when he led a team of management officials which paid a courtesy call on the Minister in Lusaka yesterday. He said the company had come up with a new system that would ensure fairness in its supply chain, further adding that the new system would also answer concerns on over pricing and the high cost of production. He said Mopani had also reduced the number of experts from 94 to 49, stating that the

number was yet to reduce further going forward. He also said management had appointed a new Security Manager who was a Zambian. Meanwhile, Mr. Sakanya said Mopani had paid K8million to Kitwe City Council, which it owed the local authority and they were in dialogue to discuss further. And Mr Musukwa said Government made it clear from the beginning that it wants Mopani to continue with operations and the 90 days’ notice was a not a mere academic exercise. On April 6, 2020, Mopani Copper Mines issued a notice of suspension of operations to Government that it was going to put the mine on care and maintenance.

Dr Kalumba added Zambia’s economy was grappling and wondered how the Head of State would fund rebels from a different country.

OP-ED: POST COVID ECONOMIC RECOVERY: WHAT NEXT FOR THE AFRICAN CONTINENTAL FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (AFCFTA) The Coronavirus pandemic is a challenge that was not anticipated by the global economy and it arrived at a period when prospects for many African countries were promising. At the beginning of 2020, Africa was on track to continue its economic expansion, with growth projected to rise from 2.9 per cent in 2019 to 3.2 percent in 2020, and 3.5 per cent in 2021; but the pandemic arrived and destabilized almost all economies in Africa. In view of this, counter measures have since been instituted which are aimed at; (1), protecting the health of the citizens, (2) minimizing the spread of the virus as much as possible and (3) ensuring that the economies are shielded from adverse negative effects. As of July 13th, there have been more than 12 million COVID-19 cases reported globally with approximately 500,000 deaths. In Africa, the confirmed cases stand at approximately 578,307 with more than 12,000 deaths and 284,972 recoveries while in Zambia, we have 1,895 cases 1,348 recoveries and 42 deaths. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been both extensive and severe, including but not limited to, a health and an economic strain characterized by financial market stress and a collapse in commodity prices in several countries. The outbreak has led to disruptions in supply chains, created uncertainties and significantly dampened near-term growth prospects. The reality may depict that Africa has not been as severely affected by the pandemic compared to other global regions but in reality; Africa is vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19 because it is highly dependent on imports for its medicinal and pharmaceutical products among others. Key sectors of the African economy such as tourism, aviation, commerce, energy; are already experiencing a slowdown as a result of the pandemic. The external effects also emanate from direct trade links between affected partner continents such as Asia, Europe and the United States. This has further caused decline in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and remittances from African Diaspora among others.

WHAT IS THE CFTA? The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is a flagship project of African Union Agenda 2063 and refers to a continental geographic zone in which goods and services are to move with no restrictions; among member states of the African Union (AU). The AfCFTA aims to boost Intra-African trade by providing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade agreements among the member states, covering trade in goods and services, investment, intellectual property rights and competition policy. The agreement brings together 1.2 billion people with a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of more than US$2 trillion. The CFTA was scheduled for implementation from 1 July 2020 but this has been postponed to 2021 because of the impact of COVID-19 and the need for African leaders to focus on combating the pandemic in their respective countries. PROSPECTS OF THE CFTA AMIDST COVID-19 PANDEMIC Although the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) has been postponed due to COVID-19, African countries should continue to make progress in their national plans to liberalise goods and services. The COVID-19

pandemic has negatively affected the entire African Continent but also provides an opportunity for African countries to embark on innovative ways of business and resilience. Even though the official launch of the CFTA was postponed to 2021, African nations should swiftly begin to put up all the necessary requirements in place. African Nations must build upon the pillars of integration and start building regional value chains to advance industrialization and improve infrastructure. From the COVID 19 pandemic, it is evident that African nations must now realize the need to adopt a developmental regionalism approach to trade integration. The fight against COVID-19 must awaken urgency among African nations consolidating the prospects of expediting integration as foundation for the implementation of the CFTA when it shall be launched in 2021. Beyond the immediate response, recovery strategies for Africa should include a strong structural component to reduce dependence on external financial flows and global markets, and develop more value-adding, knowledge-intensive and industrialized economies, underpinned by a more competitive and efficient services sector. Financing for such ventures can adopt models such as the issuance of bonds (as is the case with Zambia) as well as under the Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) framework. This crisis provides an opportunity to take more concrete steps towards setting the groundwork for a successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

the country is able to generate substantial amount of revenue despite the difficult times facing humanity. This is also a call for concerted efforts between Government, civil society, academia and private sector to work out a plan on enhancing domestic resources mobilization using innovative means. The report that more than K6 billion has been raised from the intended K 8 billion under the COVID bond is very encouraging and will indeed assist to improve the liquidity levels in the economy that have reduced due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The call for Zambia is to remain focused towards our aspirations in the Vision 2030, the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) and indeed our targets in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). This period should be used to re-stratergise our efforts as a nation so that we are resilient to negative global occurrences on our economy. This is also the time for Zambia to push further discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for processes and procedures towards a possible IMF programme. Overall, this period is a time to enhance our efforts as a nation as we strive towards recovery and growth of our economy.

ZAMBIA’S POSITIONING In view of the current global challenges, Zambia must remain strategic and position itself for a resilient and determined road towards economic recovery. Yes, the COVID-19 has negatively affected the economy and several businesses and now is the time to formulate a “ZAMBIA POST COVID ECONOMIC RECOVERY ROADMAP”. This strategic plan should detail steps that must be taken to springboard the economy on a path of recovery. It should detail how the 2020 national budget will be re strategized as well as how economic sectors will be strengthened to ensure that

t c i p Prudential Life Assurance Zambia has, through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Fund, donated US$80,000 to two local Non-Governmental Organisations working to combat COVID-19 in Zambia. Following a call from Prudential’s community investment arm, The Prudence Foundation, Prudential Zambia identified Vision Africa Regional Network Zambia (VAREN) and John Snow Health Zambia (JSH) as beneficiaries of their COVID-19 relief fund. “During our rigorous selection process, we looked at the possible impact these initiatives would have on the community, as well as their sustainability over time,” said Prudential MD, Krishnaswamy Rajagopal. “We are proud to be able to make this contribution because, like many nations, Zambia has not been spared by the impact of the Coronavirus; economic and social activity as we knew it, has had to change and the government has appealed to businesses to join in its efforts to tackle COVID-19 in the country,” he continued. Vision Africa Regional Network is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that addresses poor Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in the communities within which it operates through sensitisation and infrastructure. Through this fund, they propose the construction and installation of 24 toilets, 48 foot-operated hand washing stations, 96 hand-operated hand washing stations, and 6 water tanks in schools and public spaces in three disadvantaged communities in Lusaka.

This will cater for over 10,000 pupils and almost 2500 vendors at local markets that do not have access to basic hygiene facilities for proper hand washing and other sanitary practices. Similarly, John Snow Health, in partnership with USAID DISCOVERY-Health and the Ministry of Health, are supporting the dissemination of correct information about COVID-19 to rural communities through the vast network of traditional leaders and chiefs in Zambia. They propose to direct the funds toward the printing of informative materials, that have been translated into 7 local languages, in an effort to reinforce the dialogue around the Coronavirus, dispel rumours, and, ultimately, improve prevention of the disease. They plan to impact around 5 million Zambians in more than 100 chiefdoms. “Zambians in marginalised communities and rural areas are the most at risk of being affected by the Coronavirus. As a result, we are confident that through these two initiatives, Prudential will be filling important gaps in the community as we work to minimise the spread of COVID-19”, said Prudential GM, Maunga Kwenda.

UNIP acting national chairman Captain Robert Mukengami has warned individuals who are fanning confusion in the former ruling party to stop. Cap Mukengami charged that a group of individuals claiming to be UNIP members were causing confusion in the party. He said in an interview in Livingstone that the same group had been going round issuing statements and commenting on the matter which was active before the courts of the law. Capt Mukengami said as far as the party was concerned, the case involving UNIP had not been disposed of and was still active in court. “I am talking now as acting national chairman. I want to warn all those disgruntled leaders who are not UNIP members who are going round calling all my provincial chairmen telling them that the case has been disposed of and UNIP lost the case to stop it “Actually now, the case is starting and trial for the main case is starting soon. Those were just preliminaries issues which were raised but the main case starts soon,” he said. Capt Mukengami said that the ills such leaders have against the UNIP president, Tilyenji Kaunda, and the leadership would not bring them results. “Let them stop talking about UNIP because they will never be our members,” he said. And Capt Mukengami has urged interested young people who have interest in politics and wanting to contest at various levels in the 2021 general elections to start submitting their credentials to the party leadership in Southern Province. “We are inviting all those interested and intending to contest the positions of councillors, council chairpersons, mayors and Members of Parliament during the forthcoming general elections in 2021 to start submitting their applications,” he said. He said that applications should be forwarded to the provincial leadership in Livingstone.

JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan and Finance Minister Tito Mboweni have committed to obtain funding for the state-owned airline’s short, medium and long-term requirements in a letter in a letter sent to the business rescue practitioners of South African Airways late on Wednesday evening. The letter, which does not mention any particular amounts, was requested by the business rescue practitioners. It does not say where the funding will come from. The Department of Public Enterprises has repeatedly said in the past its aim is to create a viable and sustainable new South African national airline. In terms of a business rescue plan accepted by the creditors of the flag carrier on Tuesday, a letter of commitment of funding had to be provided to the rescue practitioners by Wednesday for the plan to proceed. The rescue plan requires about R10.3 billion in new funding for, among other things, restarting operations (R2.8 billion for July and August) and severance packages for employees (about R2 billion). The department said in a statement yesterday that it welcomes the commitment by National Treasury that the government will support and source funding for the plan which will result in “the emergence of a new viable, sustainable, competitive national airline.” According to the DPE, the funding commitment gives effect to Cabinet’s previous endorsement of SAA’s business rescue plan. Cabinet’s position is that “it supports the proposal for a new airline and the concerted effort to mobilise funding from various sources, including from potential equity partners for the uptake of the new airline.” – NEWS24.

ZAMBIA’S ECONOMY POISED FOR REBOUND, SAYS THINK-TANK By BUUMBA CHIMBULU ZAMBIA is poised to recover from the impact of Covid-19 over the mediumterm following the current mitigation measures from Government, says Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) Executive Director, Bernadette Deka Zulu. Ms Zulu observed that the economy was poised to recover over the medium term with Government’s focus and unity of purpose to amend the impact of Covid-19 on the economy and health of citizens. “It is therefore imperative for all citizens to support Government initiatives by communicating and disseminating correct information on measures and mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said in a statement yesterday. Ms Zulu applauded Government for initiatives such as the issuance of the Covid-19 bond with a target to raise K8 billion. Government has so far raised K6.8

Ms Zulu billion from the bond. In this regard, she said, the Government was relying on support from various

stakeholders, especially financial institutions and fund managers to participate. “There is no doubt that in the current context it is necessary to provide an economic stimulus through the issuance of the Covid-19 bond in order to improve the liquidity levels in the economy that have reduced due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Ms Zulu said. The Covid-19 Bond, Ms Zulu explained, was mainly aimed at stimulating economic activity. She explained that it was different from Covid-19 Funds and Resources whose aim was on Health Interventions to fight and mitigate the impact the pandemic had on HIV, TB and malaria programmes. “In sharp contrast to the Covid-19 Bond, activities from Covid-19 Funds include, but are not limited to, management of patients, epidemic preparedness assessment and, laboratory testing, among others,” Ms Zulu said.

Stanchart complex 90 p.c. complete By BUUMBA CHIMBULU STANDARD Chartered Bank Zambia’s US$40 million new head office complex is taking shape with the structure now over 90 percent complete. Chief Executive Officer, Herman Kasekende, said construction works had to slow down in the first few months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, he said, Standard Chartered US$40m head office building was taking good shape. He said this in a statement issued yesterday. “This new head office not only adds to the beauty of Lusaka’s skyline, but is a key demonstration that Standard Chartered Bank remains firmly committed to Zambia, to our clients and to our communities,” Mr Kasekende said. The investment, he said, also demonstrated that Standard Chartered remained firmly committed to Zambia’s economy, clients, and communities. “Despite the three-month break at the construction site due to the Covid-19 pandemic and adherence to social distancing measures, the Bank’s US$40m building is on track to be completed by the last quarter of the year,” Mr Kasekende said.

‘Zambia’s bonds more attractive’ By BUUMBA CHIMBULU ZAMBIA’S bonds and treasury bills have become more attractive due to positive sentiments from offshore players on the market. Demand for government securities to date stands at 130 percent for treasury bills (with the last seven debts sales oversubscribed) while that of bonds rallied to 43 percent from below 30 percent. Additionally, this is supported by an 86 percent subscription improvement in the sixth fixed auction of the year where the central bank raised K818.5mln. Risk skew remains towards treasury bills than bonds. This sentiment is a very good driver and is making Zambia’s assets attractive, says Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) National Secretary, Mutisunge Zulu. “This is coming from the fact that Zambia has taking the right steps towards re-profiling its debt, the debt restructuring by Lazard, is very good. “At the same time, the International Monetary Fund being given the mandate to commence talks with Zambia over a bailout package and this has boosted sentiments,” Mr Zulu said in an interview. Mr Zulu who is a financial analyst, explained that the global economy had liquidity with low interest rates

Mr Zulu looking assets to house. Zambia’s assets, he said, were becoming attractive and that was why offshore players were interested in buying. “We are very upbeat, we are very bullish, and we wait for any progress when to come to debt restructure. “I know the Finance Minister has been in talks with the G20 over debt suspension and structure has been put in place and we are asking for suspension for more than one year, if this goes through, it will be breathing space for Zambia to get back to its feet especially after Covid-19,” Mr Zulu said. Mr Zulu also said the current

move by the Bank of Zambia to grow its balance sheet provided an opportunity to pay suppliers in outstanding arrears, which represented the liquidity that the real sector had been starved of. This economy, Mr Zulu said, needed flows. “You should understand that quantitative easing is common practice by Central Banks in times of crisis. The United States, Bank of England and people’s Bank of China have also done it, so it is nothing new. “In crisis time, there are measures where the Central bank will step in and that is how the K6.8 billion came up,” he said.

Covid-19 is real

RESUMING OF NON EXAM CLASSES TO BE ON HOLD

Send an email to dailynation@ymail.com

Dear editor, With the current increasing number of Covid-19 Cases of which both the youth and old are gasping for oxygen is a wake up call to the minister of Higher Education in Zambia and learners at large. Currently we have seen both teachers and lecturers testing positive to Covid-19. Non Exam Classes maybe given assignments to do at home and proceed to the next academic year, its part of assessments than risking their lives in the name of Written Exams. Dear Editor, allow me to testify that Covid-19 is real and so painful in the body, you end up feeling like your nostrils have been replaced with exhaust pipes and the mucus freely runs out accompanied with severe headache and muscle pains. I’m a health inspector and I understand preventive Medicine, I tried to adhere to all the guidelines but Covid-19 caught me. The best is to stay home because I strongly believe the world has little or no information about transmission and treatment of this virus. May the relevant Ministry hear my proposal and save lives. There are more exams learners will write before the final Exam. Nivi Skulu Chabe Ivi Insp:Rabbson Wa Daka Luangwa Feira Ext

PF IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE HAS IMPROVED

Dear Editor,

THE leadership of the mighty Patriotic Front in Southern Province has drastically improved and we thank Edgar Lungu for appointing Mr. Lawrence Evans as provincial chairman Mr Evans and his team has managed to garner more supporters to the party and if today we called for elections, PF will shock a lot of people. The opposition and enemy of development have seen that PF has penetrated the province no wonder they had to parade youths from Bweengwa to cause havoc the moment they heard President Lungu would be in Monze. They are now feeling the heat and they now hire and transport cadres from the villages of Bweengwa but all this is coming to an end come 2021 The political achievement done

by PF is to transform Dundumwezi lack of mobile communication into reality. I’m writing this article in Dundumwezi and I want to thank the PF and we are assuring the party that all the structures are intact and we hope to win elections here. The infrastructure development in the province has shown that the party is not vindictive but proactive and mean well to the people of the region and the country at large. I would like to urge all youths in the province to support the party leadership from the provincial to the district level and let us shame them by voting for the party and win the next election with a massive victory. Mr Lawrence, may you continue recruiting and growing the party and help it win. LOYAL MARIO, Southern Province.

CB records 80p.c. agro inputs delivery By MUYANI SHINJABALE

EIGHTY percent of the Farmers Input Support Programme (FISP) has been delivered to the Copperbelt, says provincial Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe. Mr Nundwe said 80 percent of FISP had been delivered on the Copperbelt for the 2020-2021 farming season through Nyimba Investment Limited. Mr Nundwe indicated that the delivery of inputs would be concluded in the next two weeks. He also indicated that the Copperbelt had done exceptionally well in the 2019-2020 farming season. Mr Nundwe said in maize production, the Copperbelt was ranked fourth and ranked second in sweet potatoes and soya beans production. He urged farmers on the Copperbelt to attach great importance to agriculture in terms of storage. Mr Nundwe cautioned farmers against smuggling their products through Sakanya, Mokambo and Kasumbalesa borders into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and urged security personnel to completely eradicate smuggling. Meanwhile, the Copperbelt Provincial Administration donated five litres of sanitisers, masks and note books to media houses on the Copperbelt. Mr Nundwe said media practitioners were frontline workers who needed protective materials to help them prevent the contraction of Covid-19.

MITENGO CRIME PEAKS By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

CRIME-RIDDEN Mitengo residential area in Ndola has recorded yet another daring housebreaking incident, this time around, the bandits hauled household goods using a vehicle like an ordinary resident shifting to another location.

The bandits broke into house number 9440A and loaded a refrigerator, cooker, solar power unit, invertor worth K15, 000 and drove away in the night of Sunday. Other goods stolen were sofas, a cooker and other small items that could not easily be noticed. Residents in Mitengo, who declined to be named, said the owner of the block of flats and a guest wing was out in South Africa. “Thieves broke into Mr Mwila Boniface’s premises who is out in South Africa. They stole the solar system, batteries and an inventor, cooker, furniture and fridge. They loaded the goods onto the van,” one resident said. But when contacted, Copperbelt Commissioner of Police, Charity Katanga,

Ms Katanga

said she was yet to get details of the incident from the station where it was reported. “I have not yet received a report but I will get back to you once I receive it and get all the details,” Ms Katanga said. Mitengo has in the past three months been plagued with a series of housebreaking and theft in the usually quiet area and resident suspect that some caretakers on unfinished properties could be conniving with thieves. Some residents felt that caretakers who had been dismissed could have regrouped and were conniving with those who were still serving. Thieves have also been targeting premises with chicken runs and steaking their birds and residents concluded that thieves were conniving with people within the locality because they would only strike when they chickens were ready. Last month, thieves stole oranges from the orchard and got away with chickens while at the Catholic-run Franciscan Convent School, they got away with computers. Before that, they stole cables and other items from a Zesco installation on three different occasions.

INDHOEK - A city councillor in Namibia's capital has alleged she was offered a bribe by a local politician to ensure Chinese tech giant Huawei would win an exclusive contract to build the 5G telecommunication network in Windhoek. Brunhilde Cornelius made the allegations in an affidavit that was filed with police on

CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS IN NAMIBIAN 5G DEAL WITH HUAWEI June 19 and has been obtained by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit. Cornelius, who is also the secretary-general of the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress Party (RDP), alleged the bribe was offered by Nicanor Ndjoze, a fellow RDP member who is the party's director of elections.

Cornelius states in the affidavit that following Ndjoze's alleged offer, she reported the attempted bribery to the police, who equipped her with hidden recording devices for future meetings with Kandjiriomuini and Ndjoze. The affidavit explains how the following day, on May 20, Kandjiriomuini requested a

meeting with Cornelius and Ndjoze. Picking her up from the COW municipality, Ndjoze drove Cornelius to a petrol station at the edge of town. En route, Ndjoze informed Cornelius that "local guys who we can trust" would set up a joint venture with Huawei. Surveillance footage obtained exclusively by Al

Mandela’s daughter Zindzi tested positive for virus JOHANNESBURG - Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of South Africa’s first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela and anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, had tested positive for Covid-19 on the day of her

death. She died in a Johannesburg hospital earlier this week at the age of 59. Her son Zondwa Mandela told public broadcaster SABC that it was unclear if the disease caused her death. The family is waiting for the autopsy report. “Simply by the virtue that there was a positive test, we are therefore obligated to function and work within the framework of the existing regulation related to such cases,” he said. He is quoted as saying his mother will be buried today. – BBC.

Cameroon military search for kidnapped students YAOUNDE - The Cameroon military has launched a major search for dozens of boys abducted on Sunday by suspected separatists in the country's South-West region. A senior officer in charge of the area said that armed men stormed the locality of Mmouck Leteh in Lebialem division taking away about 60 boys, most of them aged between 12 and 16 years. He said 12 of the boys had managed to escape and were back in the village where they were kidnapped. The officer said a separatist commander, commonly referred to as General Ayeke, had claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, demanding a ransom of $2, 500. Lebialem has become a hotspot for separatist activity. Local officials say that many of the separatists have escaped military raids from neighbouring North-West region, finding a safe haven in Lebialem where

the terrain makes it difficult for the military to operate. The government forces have been fighting separatists in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions for the past four years now. The war has cost the lives of at least 3, 000 people and forced more a million from their homes, according to the United Nations. – BBC.

OOTBALL, or soccer as the game is called in some parts of the world has a long history. Football in its current form arose in England in the middle of the 19th century 1863 in London when the first Football association was formed. The FA Cup became the first important competition in 1871. The following year a match between two national teams was played for the first time. The match that involved England and Scotland ended 0-0 and was watched by 4, 000 people at Hamilton Crescent. Twelve years later, in 1883, the first international tournament took place and included four national teams: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904 and a foundation act was signed by representatives from France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start, they had invented the game and saw no reason to subordinate to an association. Still, they joined in the following year, but would not partake in the World Cup until 1950. The core of football tactics is the formation of the team. In football (soccer) the formations are classified in names consisting of numbers that represent defenders, midfielders and attackers (the goalkeeper is unnecessary to involve in this tactical aspect). Formations are simplified ways to describe a team’s positional tactic schematically. Here is one of the most utilised formations - 4-2-4 formation. This formation was a product from Brazil. It was first tested in the Brazilian league and later in the 1958 World Cup which Brazil won. It should be mentioned that the 4-2-4 was not a Brazilian novelty, but it was the Brazilians that made most success with it – they would use it again in the 1970 World Cup with supreme result. One of the features of 4-2-4 and of the Brazil national team was the attacking full-backs Football started to get complicated as the introduction of the offside rule in 1925 started a development of other formations more adapted to the offside. FA Cup, or Football Association Challenge Cup, is

FOOTBALL TEAM SETUP IN ZAMBIA a yearly competition between English football clubs first played in 1871-1872. Known as the oldest tournament in the game of football. So, chess of the green pitch football is played over the world from 32 teams in 1934 who participated in the World Cup qualifier to about 200 team now participating in the world qualifiers, wow! In Africa in February 1957 in Sudan an association called Confederation of African Football was formed to organise African football. The founding member countries were Sudan, South Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt. The first Africa Cup was won by Egypt. In Zambia, the football association got affiliated to FIFA and CAF in 1964. The Copperbelt Province is the heart and origin of big football teams in Zambia. The management and running of football was by mining companies which existed at that time namely NCCM and RCM in the early 1980s. Each team was headed by the chairman appointed by the mining company and club secretary who was actually part time in football matters. He had other responsibilities in the company. The team was headed by the coach and his assistants, normally they were just two. The players were part time, they had other full time jobs, some were artisans, boiler makers and community-based employees in mine townships. We must mention here that nearly all if not all clubs in Zambia at that time were sponsored by state-owned companies and other government bureaucratic agencies. This setup produced the finest players in Zambia who played in Europe. Zambia had

some African countries coming to learn football matters here. The sponsorship arrangement changed in the 1990s after privatisation was done. This was inevitable. Systems have three stages, creation, perform its function it was created for and dissolve or go away. In this case ZCCM was created, sponsored football in Zambia and went away. This created other entities like Copperbelt Enegy Corporation, Mopani Copper Mines, Konkola Copper Mines to take up the bill and fresh methods of running football. This change had a domino effect on football in Zambia. However, management of football and the technical bench setup has remained unchanged for over 50 years in Zambia. For the club management, FIFA introduced club licencing the compliance in Zambia is below average. For now we won’t discuss this, it will be analysed later. However, let’s look at how typically the technical bench is in all premier league teams is in Zambia now. The boss of the team is called the head coach and normally he has two assistants, team physio, team doctor, team manager and kit “master.” The head coach roles are day to day planning, strategy, recruitment, guiding of the team during matches (you must have seen some guy on the touch line screaming and instructing players on match day), discipline and many other functions related to the team. His/her assistants or deputies actually get instruction from him for smooth running of the team. The team doctor and physio

Football now is a business with a number of “players” involved. Remember the comment one expatriate coach made on Zambia coaches. Yes, he was rude but sorry he was correct. (I have a lot of coaches who are my personal friends please understand me) First the title of the head coach has to change to Team manager. Why? Modern teams now have gone scientific, the use of IT tools both software and hardware is a must. You need to understand how to do GPS sports for players. We have the video analyst coach, basic knowledge of video formats is needed, understanding of weather conditions for football is a must, player transfers. Basic knowledge of law for the team manager is a requirement. Leadership analysis and motivation. . A person to organise all this

are for medical emergencies and treatment during and after the matches. The team manager is responsible for documenting the lineup and assists on substitutions .The kit master organises jerseys and balls to be used for training and match day. This is basically the core of the typical Zambian football club technical bench, It has been like this for many years since 1964. This has to change, football has evolved, changed. It’s so advanced now such that we have certification for trainers for CAF and FIFA. Basically each continental association has developed the certification for its member states. For example, CAF has its own certification. In football now, distances and movement of each player is now calculated using GPS.

is definitely a manager and not coach.
