COVID-19 CHECKED? ZAMBIANS have reason to celebrate that the deadly coronavirus pandemic that has turned the world upside appears to be on the downturn in the country. This is after Health Minister, Dr Chitalu Chilufya reported yesterday that the country has only 21 patients in various Covid-19 isolation centres with seven of them on oxygen. But even as the nation welcomes this positive news, care should be taken that the health guidelines introduced by the Ministry of Health are adhered to. Now is not the time to throw caution to the wind and return to life under the “old normal.” The public must still be guided by the “new normal” so that we might see a zero increase on new cases. The country has registered a significant drop in infections, but Dr Chilufya urged the public not to drop the guard, but strictly adhere to Covid-19 regulations despite the reduction in cases. During yesterday’s update on Covid-19, Dr Chilufya announced that the country had in the last 24 hours recorded 28 positive cases, bringing the cumulative number to 14, 830 while 19 have been discharged. We therefore take this opportunity to remind the nation that this significant drop in infections could not have been possible had it not been for the focused leadership provided by Government and the Health authorities. When Covid-19 cases surfaced in Zambia last March, there was a lot of apprehension as to whether Zambia could weather the storm. The situation was made worse by some of the country’s key political leaders with their negative sentiments, doubting President Edgar Lungu’s government to deal with the pandemic. They scoffed at the government’s response of not imposing a total lockdown as some countries had done in the region, notably South Africa. But they failed to realise that the social and economic dynamics of Zambia were different. Government realised from the start that a huge part of the population were in the informal sector whose survival depended on what they earned each day from their little economic activities. And to the government’s credit, the country has gradually been returning to normal under a phased programme. Eating places that were closed due to Covid-19 fears have re-opened under strict health guidelines. To the government’s credit, drinking places have been allowed to operate from Fridays to Sunday, thus saving hundreds of jobs. Sporting activities though back on a reduced scale are likely to return to normal. Still, the call to the nation is to avoid handshakes, continue sanitising and maintaining social distancing as well as wearing face masks in crowded places. Zambians should take note that Covid-19 is non discriminatory by reports from the United States that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melanie had tested positive. President Lungu is among a host of other world leaders who have wished a quick recovery to the Trumps. The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also wished Donald Trump a swift recovery yesterday. Trump is pulling the United States out of the UN health agency, which he accuses of botching its response to the pandemic that emerged in China, and of being too close to Beijing. But that aside, the bottom line is that Covid-19 can strike anyone regardless of status and Zambians should be on their guard, cooperating with the health authorities to keep the pandemic at bay.

DC leader Chishimba Kambwili has been deserted by his lawyers for unspecified reasons, the magistrates court heard yesterday. This is in a matter Kambwili, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, has been charged with defamation of the President for claiming that Lusaka business executive Valden Findlay was allegedly using the Presidential jet to courier drugs. When the matter came up yesterday for continued cross examination of complainant Peter Chanda, who is New Congress Party (NCP) leader,
NDC vice president Josephs Akafumba addressed the court and applied for an adjournment on grounds that the lawyers Keith Mweemba, Gilbert Phiri, and Christopher Mundia, who had been representing Kambwili, have withdrawn their services. And Magistrate Felix Kaoma was disappointed with the conduct of lawyers for Chishimba Kambwili over their failure to inform the court that they have stopped representing their client. In his ruling Mr. Kaoma reluctantly granted the application but was disappointed with the lawyers’ lack of courtesy to inform the court in advance that they had withdrawn their services of representing Kambwili.
He said the lawyers should have at least sent a notice of withdrawal in the morning before the court sat and that yesterday’s occurrence was aimed at delaying the case. Mr. Kaoma then directed the parties to pick four dates in November for the State to conclude its case. The matter has been adjourned to November 9, 10, 16, and 17, 2020. And commenting on the lawyers’ withdrawal of legal representation from him, Kambwili said it would be unethical for him to discuss lawyer-client relationship and that it is their constitutional right to choose who they want to represent. Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal has set next Tuesday as ruling on the State’s
ConCourt allows NGO to amend petition By GRACE CHAILE-LESOETSA
THE Constitutional Court has granted Chapter One Foundation leave to amend its petition alleging that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), breached the Constitution by restricting voter registration to only 30 days. Chapter One Foundation also wants the court to make an order mandating the State to implement the mobile issuance of National Registration Cards (NRC) throughout the country. The organisation through its chairperson, Mr Cleophas Lungu cited the Attorney General Likando Kalaluka and ECZ as respondents in the matter. In its application for amendment of the petition, lawyer Linda Kasonde contended that the purpose of the amendment is to bring all the issues that are pertinent to the case before the court and that no prejudice would be suffered by the parties. But ECZ secretary and legal counsel Bob Musenga argued that the application to
By SANFROSSA MANYINDA VICE President Inonge Wina has maintained that the suspension of churches gathering from schools stays. And Ms Wina has encouraged churches to apply for land from councils so that they can construct their buildings. The Vice President said that allowing churches to continue congregating in schools would be risky and costly for the government. This follows appeals from the Kitwe District Pastors fellowship a to government to lift the suspension and allow them to continue congregating in schools. The Vice President was speaking in Kitwe when she met the Kitwe District
amend the petition was irregular as the commission would suffer prejudice. But in his ruling, Constitutional Court Judge Enock Mulembe said ECZ has not demonstrated how, if at all it would suffer prejudice if the application is granted as prayed while the Attorney General did not object to the application. "I find the application has merit. Leave to amend the petition is accordingly granted as prayed," he ruled. He also ordered that Chapter One Foundation files and serves its amended petition on or before October 5, 2020. Its petition follows an announcement by the chief electoral officer at a press briefing on June 12 this year, that the period for the voter registration had been reduced to 30 days. According to the petition, Chapter One Foundation argued that Government violated the Constitution by implementing the issuance of NRCs in a manner that contravenes the Constitution. Chapter One Foundation
argued that government has been implementing the issuance of NRCs to citizens pursuant to the national registration act chapter 126 of the laws of Zambia. It stated that the registration of citizens in accordance with the National Registration Act chapter 126 of the laws of Zambia has been accelerated by the policy of mobile registration in various parts of the country. The petitioner however, alleged that Government whether willingly or unwillingly has not rolled the mobile registration in all parts of the country and that the registration services are not uniformly available to all citizens. It argued that following the 2016 Constitutional amendment, the electoral process act was amended to provide for continuous voter registration to be carried out by ECZ. The petitioner argued that by taking actions not provided for in the Constitution ECZ has willfully or in ignorance of the law acted outside perimeters of Constitutional limits.
No church gatherings in schools - Veep Pastors Fellowship last evening. The Vice President is on the Copperbelt on a threeday working visit.“Allowing churches to again start congregating in our schools will be costly because it will require a lot of chemicals for the schools to be sprayed on a daily basis,” Ms Wina said. Earlier, Kitwe District Pastors Fellowship Chairperson Raddy Lewila said that the suspension of churches meeting in schools would negatively impact communities. He however appealed to government to withdraw the introduction of comprehensive sexual education in
schools and allow for scrutiny. “This kind of education will only promote moral decay in our communities. Let the matter be withdrawn so that we can go back to the drawing board and scrutinize further,” he said. Meanwhile, Provincial Minister Japhen Mwakalombe said that the church was working well with the provincial administration, a situation he said should be commended. Mr Mwakalombe said that the church had always been there to offer guidance and counsel to the political leadership in the district and province at large.

The country has registered a significant drop in infections, but Dr Chilufya urged the public not to drop the guard, but strictly adhere to covid-19 regulations despite the reduction in cases. Dr Chilufya said the ministry remained committed to contact tracing, testing and isolating any covid-19 cases. He said this during the Covid-19 routine briefing, where he announced that the country had in the last 24 hours recorded 28 positive cases, bringing the cumulative number to 14, 830 while 19 have been discharged. Dr Chilufya said there was need to re-engineer health system and identify public health security and also to shield the public from distortion. Dr Chilufya said President Edgar Lungu was grateful to the American Government for the continued support and solidarity to the country’s fight against Covid -19. And US Charge d’ Affaires David Young announced the donation of laboratory equipment worth K10million which would strengthen and intensify the Covid -19 testing. Dr Aaron Shibemba, vHead of Pathology and Laboratory Services, said the laboratory equipment from the American Government would change the land scape of the response to Covid -19 in detecting the cases early. Meanwhile, Dr Kunda Musonda , who is Head Laboratory Systems and Network also said the equipment would enhance efficiency and tackle the threats.

OPPOSITION USED DEAD VOTERS From Page 1 In an interview, Mr Ngulube noted the protracted mistrust and casting of aspersions on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) by Mr Hichilema over its decision to introduce the on-line voter registration and the voter registration update was just a way of continuing to win elections in his party’s strong holds using `ghost’ voters. He accused the UPND of having been winning elections in Southern Province with huge margins using dubious means. “The UPND is so scared of the new voters’ roll because the majority of the people who supposedly vote for them in their strongholds do not actually exists. “And also there is this belief or an allegation that even people who died a long time ago do remain on the voters roll and the UPND has been championing and winning election in their perceived strongholds based on ghost voters. “So we want to tell them that when the new voters roll is established, there will be no ghost voters because everyone will be required to present themselves physi-
cally,” Mr Ngulube said. He added, “And you will see what will happen in 2021, the number of votes that they were getting, those 45,000 vs three or zero will not be there because the people of Zambian have now realized that the UPND have been winning elections in Southern Province using dubious means.” Meanwhile, Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) president Sean Team has sounded an alarm to Zambians that opposition leaders Hakainde Hichilema, Chishimba Kambwili and Nevers Mumba were planning to cause confusion ahead of the 2021 general elections. Mr Tembo said the opposition leaders being led by Mr Hichilema have been conducting themselves in an unreasonable manner by seeking to create a narrative that everything about ECZ was wrong. “It is our considered view that some of these opposition political party leaders including UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema, NDC’s Chishimba Kambwili and MMD’s Nevers Mumba, are hellbent on causing confusion and anarchy ahead of next year’s general elections, so that they can create advance excuses to give to their supporters for their likely poor performance in next year’s elections,” he said. Mr Tembo also said there was nothing wrong to pre-register and updating of the voter roll especially that the process of online registration was optional.

IMF READY FOR DEBT RESTRUCTURING From Page 1
IMF First Deputy Managing Director, Geoffrey Okamoto, said the Bretton Woods institution could facilitate debtor/ creditor coordination and restructuring by providing debt sustainability analysis. Mr Okamoto explained that this could be done to determine the financing and relief necessary to restore sustainability and by conditioning its own financial support on high creditor participation. “On a global level, we can support the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) extension while encouraging its beneficiaries to tackle debt problems promptly. “And, we will continue to support the G20 in their financing and debt-relief efforts with co-financing, data and analysis,” he said at the recent Peterson Institute for International Economics Conference. At the country level, Mr Okamoto said, the IMF would continue to support members with financing, policy advice

and capacity development to strengthen debt management and transparency. e stressed that the IMF remained committed to providing debt service relief to its most vulnerable members. He said the DSSI extension should create incentives for recipient countries with unsustainable debt to tackle it promptly. For example, Mr Okamoto cited, the extension duration could be linked to an IMF programme designed to reduce
vulnerabilities, including by restructuring them if needed. “At the same time, countries with unsustainable debts should not delay restructuring and open negotiations with creditors before the situation worsens. Delaying only increases the costs—economic and human,” he warned. Meanwhile, Mr Okamoto said the world had so far managed to avoid a systemic debt crisis. He attributed this to very low interest rates and mas-
sive monetary policy support, extraordinary direct financial support. Mr Okamoto said this included the IMF emergency financing to 76 countries and debt service relief to the most vulnerable economies through the G20 DSSI to 44 countries as well as the IMF’s Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust to 29 members. He however warned that a pandemic-induced systemic debt crisis could not be ruled out saying the longer the problem was postponed, the worse it would become. “This is not the 1980s. We have better instruments and legal provisions. But that experience still haunts us, and rightly so. We know what happened: a decade of sluggish growth, low competitiveness and growing inequality. “To avoid history being repeated, we need to address mounting debt vulnerabilities now. This requires better architecture and urgent collective action—all stakeholders must do their part,” he said.
ECZ free to discard old voters’ roll – Sean Tembo ‘Privatisation inquiry not targeting any individual’ By SILUMESI MALUMO
ELECTORAL Commission of Zambia (ECZ) does not require any law to discard an existing voters’ roll in preference to a new one, Patriot for Economic Progress (PEP) has said. PEP president, Sean Tembo, said that such an action was an administrative one which falls within the mandate of the ECZ as a body responsible for managing the electoral process. “ECZ does not require any specific law for it to decide when to replace a voter’s roll for a new one or when to start the voter registration process. “It should be noted that ECZ also does not require any law to employ polling assistants or where to print ballots or when to pay salaries of its staff or when to buy fuel for its vehi-
cles,” Mr Tembo said. The opposition leader said the argument by some people that there was no law which gives power to ECZ to replace a voters’ roll with a totally fresh one.

Kwacha settles at K20 per dollar By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
THE Kwacha to dollar currency pair seems to have established a status quo around the K20.00/ K20.05 level as it continued trading at this level on the interbank. Cavmont Bank Zambia indicated in its daily report that there was very little change in market activity, with demand being seen largely from the en-
ergy sector. The Kwacha on Thursday continued to trade in the range 19.95 and 20.05 as was seen the previous day. And Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank (ZICB) the Kwacha closed at 20.00/20.05, unchanged from its opening levels. ZICB indicated that globally, the U.S. Dollar traded softer against most major currencies with investors looking for risk-
ier assets. “The dollar fell to a nine-day low on Thursday as robust U.S. data and hopes for U.S. fiscal stimulus left investors confident enough to seek out riskier currencies. “The Chinese yuan gained the most against the dollar, reaching a year-and-a-half high in the offshore market as a holiday in China dried up liquidity, exaggerating the moves,” ZICB said
visional voter’s roll. “My view is that for the act to refer to a provisional voter’s roll then there was an assumption on the part of the legislation that from time to time there shall be a new voter’s roll,” Mr Tembo said.
In addition, ZICB said, Chinese data on Wednesday showed its economic recovery was on track. Republican President Donald Trump's administration has proposed a coronavirus stimulus package to House Democrats worth more than U$$1.5 trillion, and hopes are rising that both parties will reach a compromise. ZICB said Copper traded higher and was being quoted at US$6,672 per ton compared to the previous day when it was below the $6,600 level per ton.
IT is shocking that the UPND leaders are crying foul over the decision to institute a commission of inquiry into the privatisation because no individual has been singled,Vice President Inonge Wina has said. Ms Wina said that the probe on privatisation was meant to ascertain what happened during the process because many Zambians were sent on the street and were now destitute. She said this yesterday in Parliament during the Vice-President’s question time. “No individual has been mentioned when the civil society presented a petition to his Excellency the President. I don’t remember hearing a name of Mr Hakainde Hichilema,” she said. Ms Wina was responding to UPND Chikankata Member of Parliament(MP), Kabwe Mwiinga, who asked whether Government would give the UPND permit to offer solidarity to Mr Hichilema on the alleged mismanagement during privatisation. “Mr Speaker institutions including individuals were involved in the privatisation process and I don’t see why we should single out one person because he was not the only one who was involved in the privatisation,” she added. Ms Wina indicated that for-
mer Ramcoz employees in Luanshya were a testimony of how the privatisation process which happened in 1990s had made them destitute. She was responding to National Democratic Congress Roan MP, Joseph Chishala, who asked why Government had neglected former Ramcoz employees who were now languishing in poverty. She said the suffering of former employees was partly because of the faulty of privatisation and that was why people were calling for the commission of inquiry to look into the matter. Soon, she said, the nation would know what happened and remedies would be found to support people who had suffered because of privatisation.

Grain traders want maize export ban lifted By PETER SICHALI
THE Grain Traders Association is in the process of engaging Government to lift the ban on maize export, its spokesperson, Mr Chambuleni Simwinga has said. Mr Simwinga said there was need for the government to allow regulated export of maize to bring foreign exchange. He said the association was meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture so that
they could allow for export of maize and other grains. Mr Simwinga said the country had this year recorded a bumper maize harvest and that allowing export of part of it through the quota system will not have any effect on the country's food security. "The Ministry of Agriculture should allow export of maize through the quota exports system easily monitor how much is exported and reduce from the crop forecast," Mr Sim-
winga said. He said it was important that Government looked at administrative management of export as opposed to completely banning of exports. Meanwhile, former MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe said calls for Government to lift the ban on export of maize and mealie meal are premature. Maj Kachingwe said in as much as the country recorded a bumper harvest
there is need to critically analyse the food situation in the country before exporting the grain. Maj Kachingwe said some parts of the country were hit hard by drought and floods and these are depending on the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit for survival. He said millers should instead buy enough maize from farmers to satisfy the local market before rushing to export to neighbouring countries.

Lubambe expansion projects continue By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
LUBAMBE Copper Mine Limited has completed an Advanced Concept Study of a new world-class copper resource and outlining the development of a new mine. The project extension would among other benefits extend the life of Lubambe past 2050, create approximately 3500 jobs for Zambians from construction phase to production. It would also create opportunities for Zambians and Local suppliers. The project will also contribute to the country’s economic growth through payment of Mineral Royalty and Corporate Tax. Recently, the Zambia Chamber of Mines announced that major mining projects had been suspended, alleging that the mine tax regime was unstable to the extent that firms were unable to sustain development projects. However, Lubambe Chief Executive Office, Nick Bowen, said the Chililabombwe-based mining firm was ready for the next phase of development. Mr Bowenhas briefed Mines Minister Richard Musukwa on the new prospect. Following completion of the recent drilling pro-
gramme, the extension resource now stands at 235 tonnes of copper-cobalt ore at an average grade of 3.65 per cent TCu, 0.05 per cent cobalt and has further opportunity for growth. The updated resource statement contains an estimated 8.5 million tonnes of copper making it world class. The new ore body is located some 6km South of the existing mine, at depths of over 1000m and is contained on Lubambe’s 228 sq kilometer mining license. "Our Extension project is currently the highest grade, largest undeveloped copper resource in the world. Today we have had very productive discussions with government about how we will work together to bring this multi-billion dollar project to realization,” Mr Bowen said He added that there was another two years of detailed studies, design and approval processes to get the mining firm ready for construction. He said that currently, the company had plans to commence construction in 2023 and bring the new mine into production in around. Mr Bowen said that next steps were to progress the pre-feasibility of the new Lubambe extension project and obtain necessary technical and environmental approvals from Government and other key stakeholders. “We now have the opportunity to work together to ensure this mine can be approved and constructed in the shortest time possible. We are all very excited about creating a world class mine producing 160,000 tonnes a year of copper for the benefit of all stakeholders," Mr Bowen said.

Mandevu UPPZ executive defects to MMD By SILUMESI MALUMO
THE entire United Party for Prosperous Zambia (UPPZ) executive in Mandevu constituency in Lusaka has defected to New Hope MMD. UPPZ Mandevu chairperson, Chris Chomba, said the executive ditched the party, citing lack of leadership. Mr Chomba said the executive could not continue to hold on to the party which was not going anywhere. “So, I am arranging for a defection to the MMD because our UPPZ is not doing fine on the ground since its inception. We can’t continue to be in the party when nothing is really happening.
“From the time we joined the UPPZ to date we have not seen anything changing, we are still moving of the same pace and we cannot continue like that,” Mr Chomba said. Mr Chomba said the executive in Mandevu resolved to join the New Hope MMD led by Dr Nevers Mumba because of good leadership being exhibited. Mr Chomba indicated that Dr Mumba had shown good leadership style which had attracted attention of the UPPZ executive in Mandevu constituency. He said that joining the MMD would make them participate in national matters unlike what was happening in the UPPZ.

‘ZAMBIA SHOULD NOT OVERSHADOW MINING’ By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
T
HERE is need to ensure Zambia’s mineral wealth and the mining sector are protected and promoted as the country pushes for economic diversification. Economic diversification should not prevent Zambia from exploiting its mineral wealth, says Stanbic Bank Zambia Client Coverage, Mining and Metals Manager, Namakuka Sichone. Ms Sichone emphasised that mining was significant to the local economy and need not be overshadowed by the country’s diversification agenda. She observed the need for Government and other stakeholders to increase their investment in the sector if the country was to enjoy maximum benefit from vast mineral wealth and reach its development targets. Ms Sichone was speaking during the latest Stanbic Anakazi Online Conversations webinar. “As Zambia’s biggest bank by assets, we have a responsibility to help drive the economy forward through strategic financial support in

key growth sectors. While we understand and unequivocally support the country’s diversification agenda, we realise that mining remains an essential pillar to the economy,” she said. The mining industry is an important pillar of the economy contributing about 12 percent and 75 percent of Gross Domestic Product and exports, respectively. Government has in recent years prioritised economic diversification to move away from over-dependence on the extractive industry in line with Vision 2030 and the Seventh National Development Plan. Zambia Chamber of Mines (ZCM) president,
Goodwell Mateyo, said for the country to realise its development goals, there was urgent need to translate the country’s mineral resources into wealth to compliment investment in other growth sectors. Mr Mateyo noted that the world was on the verge of a fourth industrial revolution that would spark fresh interest in Zambia’s mineral resources. He however, warned that the country could miss out if investments in the extractive industry were delayed. “Due to the industry’s long-term nature, we need to start implementing measures to prop it up as soon as possible if we are to benefit
from the fourth industrial revolution which is just on the horizon. “Mining investments have a long maturity period; taking years, sometimes decades before an investor can see a return,” Mr Mateyo said.

ZAM eliminates hurdles in local content use By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
THE Zambia Association of Zambia (ZAM) is ready to overcome the underutilisation of local content which has arisen mainly on account of weak inter-sectoral linkages and lack of integration of local products into domestic value chains. Manufacturing strengthens utilisation of local content and Government support remains key in the process, says ZAM Business Development and Membership Officer, Sopani Muzumara. Ms Muzumara said ZAM was playing its role by ensuring that small and medium enterprises were developed into suppliers that could meaningfully contribute into the value chains. “Actualisation of linkage development can be achieved through the Government’s enactment of the local content policy into law. “Therefore, the local content law should be fast-tracked, to allow for effective development of economic linkages in the country,” she said in her write up on Exploring Smart Technologies for Value Addition. Ms Muzumara urged all consumers to look out for products with the official Proudly Zambian Campaign (PZC) logo from accredited companies. She indicated that Zam-
bian manufacturing had grown to levels where there were now local products in almost every production category. “From household goods, to office equipment, to foods and beverages. Your purchase of local produced goods saves a job as employment is created, brings tax revenue into the country and allows for growth in the sector,” she said. She said in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, ZAM presented nine Proudly Zambian Certificates to manufacturing companies that had been vetted and approved as good representatives of Zambian local brands. The companies are Ascensio Investments Limited, Travium Supplies, Manal Investments Limited, Strongpak Limited, Unified Chemicals Zambia Limited, Unity Packages Limited, Yatu Foods Limited, Unity Garments Limited and Sunfoods Trading Limited. Ms Muzumara explained that products from these companies were established as environmentally friendly and met international quality standards, two requirements for the use of the Proudly Zambian logo. She said eighteen companies had received certification in 2019 and had been championing this campaign, inspiring consumer confidence in local products in the country.

By ANDREW MUKOMA MORE than 800 people in Kazungula and Livingstone have been trained to identify the person with disabilities and look into their interests. The training has been channelled through the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NAD). NAD Zambia Programme Manager, Eddie Mupotola said his organisation had conducted training in the two districts and developed manuals and modules which were being used in the programme.
homes, especially girls who want to venture into farming related activities. "Yes, I can confirm that about 400 youths are expected to receive farming inputs for the 2020/2021 farming season under the youth development strategy programme," he said. He said the youth development strategy was running side by side with the food security pack (FSP) in ensuring that youths were not left out in national development. Mr Malayiti said that all youths in already established cooperatives and groups across the district would be captured.
"We are talking about viable but vulnerable youths who are involved or have a passion in agriculture, and have formed cooperatives," he said. Boniface Mulenga, a local youth trainer and activist, applauded Government for extending the farming input empowerment programme to youths. "The future of our country is in the youths and empowering them with farming inputs will improve the food security in the nation," Mr Mulenga said. He said that the agriculture sector has proved to be a profitable and sustainable sector worth investing in.
Initiative to promote disabled persons unveiled Mr Mutopola was speaking during the opening of a workshop on human rights and COVID 19 for persons with disabilities in Livingstone. Meanwhile, Disability Rights Watch director, Wamundila Waliuya, paid tribute to Government for the promotion of the rights of the people with disabilities. Mr Waliuya said the Government had demonstrated inclusiveness in dealing with persons living with disabilities.
And the media has been urged to promote the rights of persons with disabilities by telling positive stories about their lives. Livingstone District Commissioner, Pascalina Musokotwane, said the media has a critical role to play in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. The media, she said has a role to play in championing the welfare and well-being of people with disabilities. “The coming of Covid-19 in
Zambia has complicated the lives of many people especially those with disabilities and it has changed the way we all programme our activities,” Ms Musokotwane said. She said it was therefore important to interrogate the impact of COVID-19 on the employment of human right. She said stakeholders such as the media should take interest in playing their role in realising the rights of persons with disabilities.

Debunking Shishuwa’s claim on planned 2021 election rigging
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor, SHISHUWA accuses the same government that tolerates him to continue writing his anti-government theories of being intolerant, forgetting that it is also the same government that feeds him? To us, this proves the obvious that Shishuwa represents an agenda that is beyond fair academic commentary but a deeper political interest. Our conclusion is that Shishuwa is just another disgruntled and half-baked politician hiding behind the curtain of academia and must be treated as such Were it not for Shishuwa Shishuwa’s impeccable academic background, we would have ignored him because we have followed his many biased political commentaries against Edgar Lungu and his government and we know his inclination towards the opposition from the time of the Post Newspaper, but given his academic background and the audience he represents (UNZA) we are forced to debunk his sensational claim in his recent ranting titled “This is how President

F we have to remove poverty going forward, all contracts be it supply or construction should be given to Zambians. The same should be encouraged for the private sector. Dear Editor, THE Zambian Roads & Highway Safety Group (ZRHSG) would like to congratulate the Road Safety and Transport Agency (RTSA) for having a working online platform where their services can be accessed. The group is pleased that the majority of their members have had great success in getting their road tax, road fitness and other services provided by RTSA from the comfort of their homes and offices using these online platforms. This has helped reduce on the number of wasted hours spent queuing at RTSA offices, the Post Offices and other places for these services. This is also helping in preventing the spread of the corona virus among motorists and
disappoint by not delivering or by doing sub standard jobs. You will tarnish our imagine! Government in 2020 will procure over K20 billion in services and supply of essentials like fertiliser and other goods. If these contracts can be given kuli bamuntu, then the trickle down effect will be felt quickly not where our people are engaged only in transportation or K1, 000 paying jobs from the capitalists. DR LUBINDA HAABAZOKA.
Well done RTSA for offering online payment system! other road users. The group is urging RTSA and its partners who are managing this online system to perfect it and make it user friendly to all the users especially those who are not on Zamtel networks and those without visa cards. The system needs more options for mobile money payments using all available mobile money channels while insurance companies should ensure car insurance details are uploaded in real time on this RTSA online system. The group is aware of the many challenges that some motorists and car owners using the same online platform have experienced in the course
of using the system from insurance details not appearing to failure to pay using the Zampay mobile money system or the VISA cards. The group also urges RTSA to heed to the demands by motorists and car owners to have their quarter system improved to run concurrently from the day a person pays so that the end of the quarter is different for each car owner depending on when they paid for the services, like it is done for car fitness. This will help decongest RTSA offices and the online system. RTSA has proven that government services can safely and conveniently be provided via mobile and online
platforms and that there is no need therefore for long queues at government offices when online platforms can be utilised. MTHOMISWA BANDA, Group Admin – Zambia Roads & Highway Safety Group.
THE government should know that to develop the country we should remember that Zambia is an agricultural country as most areas have good water supply and fertiliser. We have enough fertile land and good rainfall pattern so we can feed the entire southern and central Africa. Government through the ministries of Agriculture and Livestock should invest more. As a nation we can make money in agriculture and livestock than we can make on copper. The other thing we have to look at is crop diversification. Crop diversification, once fully maximised will contribute positively to the wealth creation and boost people’s livelihood with addition to other crop that have the potential to generate income and stimulate development. AGRCULTURE Maize is one of the major crops grown in Zambia, but need other crops to be recognised as well. Other crops that we need to focus more are millet, sorghum, rice, beans, soya beans, nuts, wheat and cassava. Zambia has the potential not only to attain the lasting food security but to become a regional agriculture hub and global exporter of processed agricultural products. Agriculture presently contributes 15 percent to the gross domestic product (GDP). Therefore agriculture remains vital to employment and rural livelihoods as 70 percent of Zambia’s labour force works in agriculture. That’s why the Ministry of Agriculture need to encourage the farmers to grow more food. The Lima credit programme started by ZNFU in partnership with Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco) to address issues affecting small-scale farmers whose particular challenges includes, loans, fertiliser and improved seeds for the farm produce should be encouraged in all provinces. The other one is Lima Chuma which means
“Cultivating Prosperity” is a holistic programme designed to empower our rural farmers in Zambia. LIVESTOCK The livestock sector needs only two things to surpass crop production. Firstly disease prevention and secondly the fight against stock theft should be taken seriously. Government ahould consider revising some policies in the livestock sector that negatively affect the country’s capacity to export to the regional markets. Addressing such policies will enable easy access to veterinary services among livestock farmers. The old policies in livestock have resulted in farmers suffering from escalating cost of vaccines and poor access to veterinary services translating in reduced livestock. The disease situation in Zambia has led to limited export opportunities there by reducing the potential contribution to foreign exchange. Livestock farmers in Zambia require support by putting in place appropriate and sustainable policies, support services, functional institutional are regulatory framework to increase livestock productively and quality of life through production. 1) Problems that hinder commercial beef production in Zambia. (a) Most traditional farmers keep animals for prestige and they are reluctant to sell. (b) Poor quality meat because the quality is not controlled. (c) Poor cattle management leading to over grazing in disease infected areas. (d) Most cattle farmers stay very far from the market centres. 2) There are two measures that should be taken by the government and cooperating partners to improve beef production and supply in Zambia. (a) Educating farmers on the importance of quality rather than quantity. (b) Veterinary officers should start going to assisticattle owners and attending to animals. (c) Provision of markets and cold storage such as Zambeef and Kachema Suppliers. KENNEDY MUNYEMESHA.

Kitwe Council acts to protect public property By ROGERS KALERO THE Kitwe City Council will engage the Regional Surveyor’s office to survey Government land and ensure public institutions like hospitals, clinics and schools are placed on title to curb encroachments, Town Clerk Mbulo Seke has said Mr Seke said the council sought the services of the Regional Surveyor to work with the district team to survey all Government schools, clinics, hospitals and other properties as a first step towards acquisition of title. In an interview in Kitwe yesterday, Mr Seke said the council would spend K165,000 for the exercise which was expected to last for 30 days. “The council has resolved to do this exercise by engaging the office of Regional Surveyor from Ndola to come and survey government land in the city and also survey land of government institutions. “The surveying of land of government institutions in the city is with a view to come and assist secure titles for government properties in the district. Once the survey diagrams are produced, each ministry or department will foot their bills for the process of title,’’ Mr Seke said He said he was confident that the engagement of the Regional Surveyor to survey Government land would bring to an end to encroachment on public property. In a similar vein, Mr Seke said individuals should process titles for their properties because it was easier to curb trespass and encroachments on their property. In August this year, Works and Supply Minister Sylvia Chalikosa said Government would put all State properties on title to avoid encroachment and ensure maximum protection from various forms of vandalism.

BIOLOGY
On today’s pupils forum in Biology will look at the topic: Human Heath and Disease. This topic is at grade twelve (12) level of the Zambian syllabus. At the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to: • Define health and disease • Identify the two main categories of diseases
HUMAN HEALTH AND DISEASE • Health is defined as a state of physical and mental well-being. • A disease is any physical or mental disorder that interferes with normal functioning of the body and has a characteristic set of signs and symptoms. • A sign is any indication of a disease which can be observed or measured e.g. a rash, a high temperature and loss of weight. A symptom is any indication of a disease that can only be felt and described by a patient e.g. headache and other kinds of pain, nausea and dizziness. GROUPS OF DISEASES There are two main categories of diseases which are infectious diseases (transmissible diseases) and noninfectious diseases (non-transmissible diseases). Infectious Diseases
Disease
Bilharzia (Schistosomiasis)
Causative Agent
Malaria
Cholera
Methods of Transmission
Treatment and Methods of Control
Schistosoma (S. mansoni, S. haematobium & S. japonicum)
Anaemia, tiredness, blood in urine and in faeces ( eggs of Schistosoma have hooks that damage blood vessels of bladder and gut)
Exposure to cercaria larvae in water
Sanitary disposal of urine and faeces; boiling or treatment of water before use; treatment with drugs
A virus called human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Loss of weight; skin cancer; tiredness; opportunistic infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and diarrhoeal diseases
Sexual intercourse with an infected partner; contact with infected blood; mother to child transmission
Avoid unprotected casual sex; be faithful to one sexual partner; avoid sharing piercing and cutting utensils; screening of blood before transfusion; no cure yet
A protozoon called Plasmodium
Headache; fever; anaemia; pain in muscles and joints; shivering and sweating
Treatment with antimalarial drugs; controlling or killing of Bite from female Anopheles mosquito mosquitoes; preventing mosquito bites
A bacterium called Vibrio cholera
Vomiting and diarrhoea (rice water like stool) ; dehydration
Taking contaminated food and water; contact with infected person
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
Signs and Symptoms
Non-transmissible Diseases These are diseases that cannot be passed from one Diseases Infectious diseases are those diseases that can be Non-transmissible individual to another. They are divided into the following transmitted from person to person. They are also called These are diseases that cannot be passed from one individual to another. They are divided into categories: pathogenic diseases because they are all caused by the following categories: 1 (i) Nutritional Deficiency Diseases: Diseases caused pathogens. Pathogens are disease-causing organisms, (i) Nutritional Deficiency Diseases: Diseases caused poor diets lacking one of or more of poor diets lacking one of or more of essential numainly microorganisms. Pathogens include viruses, essentialtrients. nutrients.Examples of such diseases are marasmus, bacteria, protozoa, fungi and worms. Methods by which rickets. kwashiorkor and rickets. infectious diseases spread include the following: Examples of kwashiorkor such diseases and are marasmus,

US HOSTILITY WON’T DETER CUBA’S QUEST TO BOOST MEDICAL COOPERATION
H
AVANA - The Cuban people and the international community are aware of the dishonest campaign that the government of the United States has launched since 2019 to discredit Cuba’s international medical cooperation; exert pressure on the governments that have asked for it and deprive people of these health services. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba denounces that, as part of that offensive, the US government has unleashed an array of pressures and blackmails against the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO). Under the threat of forgoing the payment of its financial contribution, the United States, the main contributor to the PAHO budget, has forced the Secretariat of that organisation to accept what is called “an external audit of PAHO’s role in Brazil’s ‘More Doctors’ Programme,” which involved the participation of thousands of Cuban professionals, at the express request of the Workers’ Party’s popular government. The Programme has been the target of to the most gross disparagement campaign launched by the United States and the current Brazilian government. The alleged concerns of the United States regarding Cuba’s cooperation, particularly about the “More Doctors” Programme, are neither legitimate nor relevant so as to deserve further consideration at PAHO. The “More Doctors” Programme, which has been audited several times before with positive results, was established by virtue of a tripartite agreement achieved between the Cuban government, the then Brazilian government and PAHO. Thanks to this programme, from August 2013 to November 2018, Cuban doctors in Brazil assisted 113, 000 359 patients in more than 3, 600 municipalities and provided permanent health coverage to 60 million Brazilians. Thanks to this programme, primary health care was expanded; health services access and offers were increased; health indicators improved and hospital admissions decreased due to the preventive work carried out by Cuban doctors. The level of satisfaction and acceptance among patients, doctors and the Programme’s managers was
high. According to a survey made by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), 95 percent of patients said to be pleased or very pleased with the programme. THE ALLEGATION
The alleged concerns of the United States regarding Cuba’s cooperation Particularly about the “More Doctors” Programme, are neither legitimate nor relevant so as to deserve further consideration at PAHO.
If Cuba had not been forced to withdraw its doctors from Brazil, they could have contributed to tackle and control the Covid-19 pandemic in that country, which is currently the second most affected by this disease in the world. As was stated in the Declaration issued by the Cuban
FILEPHOTO: Cuba was chosen to host the regional launch of the campaign because of the great strides the country has made in vaccine development and in eliminating vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, neonatal tetanus, diphtheria, measles, rubella, congenital rubella syndrome, whooping cough and mumps, said Etienne. "Cuba is a shining example of commitment, investment and passion for health." - PAHO
Ministry of Public Health on November 14, 2018, Cuba decided to discontinue its participation in the “More Doctors” Programme, in the face of the servile behaviour of the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who adopted a contemptuous and threatening attitude towards our cooperation workers and, in open disregard for PAHO and the agreement reached by this organisation with Cuba, imposed modifications on the terms of the programme, which led to non-compliance with originally agreed guarantees and the imposition of new conditions to the permanence of our professionals in that country, which were unacceptable. The US government’s attempt to manipulate international and regional bodies to its will is disgusting. It is well known that the executive organs of PAHO have not adopted any single document mandating or legitimatising the implementation of this audit or the drafting of its so-called “Terms of Reference.” Such document was drafted by a group made up by the United States, Brazil,
PAHO’s own Secretariat and Canada, where the latter acted as mediator among the parties. The height of all these arbitrary actions is that the entire auditing process is being financed from PAHO’s regular budget. Without any mandate whatsoever, a US law firm was hired to issue
an adjusted and pre-determined evaluation within a term of 180 days, in conformity with the “Terms of Reference” that the select group headed by the United States had already defined. No one with an elemental sense of honesty, knowing the intentions and behaviour of the government of the United States, or with a modicum of common sense, would ever doubt that this is a head-on attack against multilateralism; a gross politically-motivated manipulation of PAHO and an extension of the aggression against Cuba. After the denunciation of this manoeuvre by Dr. Jose Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of Cuba, at the 58th meeting of the Directing Council of PAHO on September 28, the statements made by the representatives of the State Department showed that the government of the United States is behind the pressures that are exerted on the organisation, against Cuba’s cooperative programmes with member States of the region and the so-called “external audit” of the “More Doctors” programme for
Brazil. The United States went far beyond that and opposed the election of Cuba as a member of the Executive Committee of PAHO, an action that failed to succeed thanks to the unanimous support that Cuba’s candidature received. During the sessions of the Council, sev-

eral countries recognized and expressed their gratitude for the solidarity and cooperation offered by the Cuban medical staff to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba denounces that a spurious and mendacious evaluation is currently in the making, promoted by and to serve the aggressive purposes of the United States, in its effort to discredit Cuba’s international cooperation. It is unfortunate that, through this new manoeuvre, the US government is trying to damage Cuba’s relations with PAHO, which has historically been based on cooperation, respect, common identification of humanist goals and values and a determination to guarantee health quality services to the people. This has been the basis of a relation Cuba feels proud of. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba reiterates Cuba’s firm commitment to the development and sustainability of its health system for the benefit of the Cuban people and the cooperation with the peoples in the region and elsewhere in the world. Cuba has the capacity to do it, which has been created with its own efforts. This is a reality that no one can change. Access to health care is a human right and the United States is committing a crime when it tries to deprive millions of persons of that inalienable right. As was expressed in the Declaration issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 5, 2019, it is both immoral and unacceptable that the dignity, professionalism and altruism of the more than 400, 000 Cuban health cooperation workers, having accomplished missions in 164
countries during 56 years, are called into question. The tightened economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, whose effects are being particularly devastating in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic has not, nor will it prevent our country from sharing its scarce resources with other peoples in need in the world. In addition to coping with the pandemic en within its borders, and guided by the humanist and fraternal vocation of our people, Cuba has reinforced its international medical cooperation by sending more than 3, 800 cooperation workers, organised in 52 medical brigades, to 39 countries and territories affected by the disease. These specialists have been joined by those who were already offering their services in 59 States, prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.
PAHO
The United States went far beyond that and opposed the election of Cuba as a member of the Executive Committee of PAHO. As was expressed by the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, in his Reflection of October 20, 2014 entitled “The Time of Duty,” “the medical staff that is ready to go to any region to save lives, even at the risk of losing their own, is the best example of solidarity that human beings can offer.” – MINISTRY OF FOREIN AFFAIRS.

JUBILEE FEUD? …Kenya’s deputy leader banned from ruling party’s office
N
AIROBI - Kenya’s ruling party Jubilee - has banned Deputy President William Ruto from accessing the party’s headquarters as the rift between the president and his deputy widens. The Secretary General of Jubilee, Raphael Tuju, claimed the deputy president ceased being a member of the party after he launched “his own headquarters” to bolster his bid to become president in 2022. Publicly, the president and his deputy have dismissed reports about a rift between them but their top aides have issued statements that confirm their differences. This week, the deputy president snubbed a national conference attended by the president - with his seat which was left vacant throughout the event.
KAMPALA - Uganda’s health ministry has revised its protocol for discharging Covid-19 patients that will see asymptomatic patients leave hospitals without a retest. Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng said patients who have been in isolation for 10 days will be discharged without testing if they do not show symptoms. – BBC.

Mali junta publishes transition roadmap
BAMAKO - Mali’s junta has abandoned a controversial proposal that would have paved the way for its leader to replace interim President Bah Ndaw according to a roadmap for restoring civilian rule after the August 18 coup published by the junta. The junta had proposed that its head, Colonel Assimi Goita, would replace the president of the interim government if the latter were incapacitated. But this clause has now been removed. – BBC.

that they are the leaders of tomorrow, but unfortunately for them, tomorrow never comes. That is why politicians usually take advantage of them,” said Kathiani MP Robert Mbui. Nominated MP David ole Sankok said it was time for the youth to get jobs as most of them have for long been used as puppets of influential people for political gains. “Since most of our youth are idle, they have often been

We actually need to tie up the retirement age of all civil servants with the age limit of any politician and anyone in any appointive position,” he said. Sankok said people whose time in service has elapsed should retire to create opportunities for the youth. Suna West MP Francis Masara said most Kenyan youth are jobless yet some offices are filled with people aged above 60. But North Horr’s Chachu Ganya said the Bill was discriminative and punitive.
declared an intention to run for the top office in the elections in two years’ time. – BBC. “The Bill has no regard for special skills or expertise. We have to be realistic and live with reality. Some jobs are for old people and that is that. Not all jobs are for the youth,” said Ganya. Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu questioned the age proposed for retirement, arguing that major factors need to be considered before the age factor is determined. “I think it’s time we started asking the hard questions, whether 60 is the age which people should retire. Factors like skills development and lifespan of an individual need to be considered,” he said. – THE STANDARD, Kenya.
Buhari urges ‘healing’ as Nigeria turns 60 ABUJA - Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari called for “national healing” on Thursday as the West African giant marked 60 years of independence in the face of deep economic and security challenges. Africa’s most populous nation is holding scaled-down celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic to commemorate six decades since it gained self-rule from Britain in 1960. Buhari, wearing a facemask, inspected a military parade from the back of an open-top truck at a sparsely-attended stadium in the capital Abuja. In an earlier televised speech he insisted that Nigeria was “bound by destiny

to be the largest and greatest black nation on earth” but faced major problems. “Today, we grapple with multiple challenges with a population exceeding 200 million,” Buhari, 77, said. “Our economy along with every single economy in the world is in crisis. We still face security challenges in parts of the country, while our society suffers from a high loss of moral rectitude which is driven by unbridled craving for political control.” Africa’s biggest oil producer has been battered by the global economic fallout from the pandemic as a drop in crude prices has robbed it of key revenues. The country is battling a decade-long jihadist insurgency
in its northeast and has failed to tamp down bloody clashes, kidnappings and insecurity in the northwest. Almost half of the population is estimated to live in extreme poverty, and rampant corruption has drained away decades of oil wealth. The deep-seated woes are a far cry from the widespread optimism that greeted independence. But those hopes evaporated as the country went through coups, a civil war that left a million dead and over thirty years of military dictatorship. “An underlying cause of most of the problems we have faced as a nation is our consistent harping on artificially contrived fault-lines,” Buhari said.
“We need to begin a sincere process of national healing, and this anniversary presents a genuine opportunity to eliminate old and outworn perceptions.” – AFP.

Covid: Donald Trump and Melania test positive WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus and are now self-isolating. Trump, aged 74 and therefore in a high-risk group, wrote on Twitter: “We will get through this together.” It comes after Hope Hicks, one of his closest aides, tested positive. Trump’s announcement comes just over a month before the presidential elections on November 3 where he faces Democratic challenger Joe Biden. Hicks, 31, travelled with Trump on Air Force One to the first presidential TV debate with Biden in Ohio on Tuesday. Some of Trump’s family members who attended the debate were seen not wearing masks. Trump has mostly spurned mask-wearing and has often been pictured not socially distanced with aides or others during official engagements. The coronavirus has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, killing more than 200, 000 of them. Reacting to the news, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter: “My best wishes to
President Trump and the First Lady. Hope they both have a speedy recovery from coronavirus.” Other world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, also sent messages of support to the US presidential couple. As the nation reacts to the news of President Trump and first lady Melania Trump’s coronavirus diagnoses, some are also raising questions about the administration’s handling of the situation after Hicks confirmed that she had tested positive. A small group of White House officials knew by Thursday morning that Hicks had contracted Covid-19, according to CNN Correspondent Kaitlan Collins - but Trump still took a trip to New Jersey for a fundraiser, and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany still held a news briefing at the White House on Thursday. McEnany didn’t wear a mask at the briefing, and made no mention of Hicks’ diagnosis to reporters in the room, Collins said. “So the question is going to be for the White House, why did the President still go to New Jersey, knowing that he could potentially put these people at risk, these donors and fund raisers? And of course, why did the press secretary still hold a briefing despite knowing she had come into contact with somebody who had just tested positive for coronavirus?” Collins said – BBC.

FTER scoring a brace to help his team reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, Chipolopolo striker Patson Daka and midfielder Enock Mwepu will face one of the toughest challenges guiding Red Bull Salzburg to the last sixteen of Europe’s elite league. The Austrian champions have been drawn against defending champions Bayern Munich, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow. It’s another tough test for the Zambian duo, Daka and Mwepu who played against 2019 Champions Liverpool and Italy’s Napoli in Group E of the 2019/2020 edition
Fathi

where Salzburg put up some performances impressive and finished third with seven points. It will be the first time the Austrian champions Salzburg will be meeting Atletico Madrid and Bayern who will be looking to defend and win the Champions league for a second consecutive time. Daka who was hoping for a meeting with Barcelona or Real Madrid will have to guide Salzburg to the next round of the competition for his dream to become a reality. ChampiMeanwhile, ons League draws held on Thursday night in Geneva produced some intriguing groups as four times winners Manchester United were pared 2019/2020 finalist Paris St-Germain, RB

Chelsea will play Europa League winners Sevilla, Krasnodar and debutants Rennes. Manchester City are in Group C with Porto, Olympiakos and Marseille. Sport Pilgrim A COACH’S AGONY – OVERWEIGHT PLAYERS Firstly, diet has been an issue
Saturday October 3, 2020 for our sports men and women in
GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA THE men’s competitions especially football have been gradually getting back on their feet. Unfortunately, the women’s leagues have remained dormant with no or less activities. The latest news of Zambia women national team coach Bruce Mwape declaring that most players who are in camp for the COSAFA Championship preparations are overweight have come as a worry to many especially at this time when women football is on its steady rise. Coach Mwape attributed the problem to lack of training during the “lockdown” period. But as sports women is this justifiable? We might definitely give them a benefit of doubt that this Covid-19 period has been the most difficult period in world sports history, it has never been as difficult as this getting into the gym. One question we should however ask, is why our players seem to find themselves in such situations?
our country. We don’t seem know what they should or should not eat. In the past, we have heard how some of our players have failed to shine in foreign clubs because they could not look into their eating habits. I believe all of the players in the women’s team are attached to clubs hence, they should have been guided especially at a time like this. Clubs need to engage with these ladies to teach them about how best they can improve on their diet. In as much as we would want to blame the clubs, the players must also learn to be disciplined off the pitch. They do not need to have the coach on their back to remain in top shape. Such a period requires discipline and our women should have been more careful not to land in such a situation which could see Zambia failing to perform in the upcoming matches. Issues of diet, reduction on alcohol intake and individual workouts must become part of our athletes if they are to succeed. Teams must invest in employing dieticians to help their players. Some have failed before and we wouldn’t want more to fail. Let’s maintain individual discipline and commitment. We can surely do it. At this stage, the coach should not be in a hurry to declare that they team will grab the COSAFA title because he has two weeks to ensure they shed off the weight. Hope the job will be done in 14 days’ time. We continue chatting via gracechaile21@gmail.com
New players impress Fathi By MICHAEL MIYOBA
NAPSA Stars coach Mohammed Fathi says he is impressed with the performance of the new players who played in Napsa’s 1-1 draw against Indeni in the first fixture of the Big Six preseason preparatory tournament at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. Fathi said both the new players such as Lawrence Chungu, Timothy Otieno and the Young
Stars from the academy were impressive despite having recorded a stalemate against Indeni. Fathi, who is preparing for the CAF Confederations Cup sad he will not put pressure on his boys to win games in the tournament meant to improve the team’s fitness levels before the 2020/2021 soccer season can start. “So far so good the result is not important for me what is
important is for the players to express themselves and work on the mistakes before the league starts,” Fathi said. NAPSA came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Indeni thanks to new Kenyan international Timothy Otieno who cancelled out Graven Chitalu’s 28th minute strike for the two sides to share the spoils. Meanwhile, Indeni FC coach Dabid Chilufya hailed NAPSA Stars for organising the Big Six
pre-season tournament which has given his boys an insight of what to expect when the Super Division resumes. In another fixture played yesterday, Green Buffaloes beat Forest Rangers 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Martin Phiri and Youremember Banda while todays’ games will see Napsa Stars taking on Zanaco in a Lusaka derby as Forest Rangers take on Green Eagles.
