ZAMBIA LOSES K800M
...in another mukula scam By OLIVER SAMBOKO
Kasama MP warns UPND chief Mr. Sampa
Mr. Mucheleka
ZAMBIA is losing over £37 million (K888 million) annually in revenue due to some casinos and game betting outlets operating illegally, an expert has said. And Zambia Republican Party president, Wright Musoma said it was disheartening that the country was losing huge sums of money at a time when it was in dire need of funding. Attorney General Association (AGA) board members, Markus Green, said Zambia should strengthen its laws to stop money laundering in the casino and game betting sectors. Mr Green noted that while the Zambia Tourism and Hospitality (Casino) Regulations No. 93 of 2016 mandated casino operators to obtain a licence, some operators were not adhering to regulations resulting in the country losing colossal sums of money in revenue.

HE Patriotic Front (PF) still resonates with pro-poor policies on which it was formed, former State House Deputy Minister Mulenga Sata has said. Mr Sata said despite evolving, the ruling party has still maintained its pro poor policies aimed at uplifting the lives of the poor. He said in an interview that
in as much as there was need for the political party to be dynamic, the PF has not drifted from pro poor policies on which it was formed. Mr Sata said PF Government has continued to implement programmes that are meant to improve the welfare of the poor. “PF is a party that has continued to evolve because it’s a living organism, new people have come in while others left but it has maintained its pro
poor policy,” Mr Sata said. He said PF still resonated with the poor and the grassroots who were in majority. “Going by demographics and results that we have seen the PF still resonates with the poor, “Mr Sata said. Mr Sata, who is the son of the late PF founder, Michael Sata, said the party has continued to receive support from Zambians because it has maintained its original policies.
I enjoy judicial immunity - Magistrate By CHINTU MALAMBO PRINCIPAL Resident Magistrate David Simusamba has maintained that he enjoys judicial immunity and therefore, Mr Chishimba Kambwili cannot sue him for executing his duty as an adjudicator. This is in a matter where Mr Kambwili, the leader of National Democratic Party (NDC) together with his lawyers, Mr Cheelo Mwiinga and Mr Christopher Mundia have dragged Mr Simusamba to the Lusaka High Court for defamation of character. Mr Kambwili and his two lawyers have sued Mr Simisamba who they have accused of soliciting over K300, 000 bribe for him to enter judgement in favour of the opposition leader in a forgery, uttery case. The Magistrate has asked the High Court to dismiss the action against him, insisting that he enjoys judicial immunity. In his application to have the matter dismissed, Mr Simusamba said he has been sued relating to issues which arose in a strictly private and confidential correspondence to Justice Irene Mambilima.
He noted that the issues arose in his performance as an adjudicator in a matter between the people versus Chishimba Kambwili. Mr Simusamba stated that no action could lie against a judicial officer in his or her capacity for acts done or words spoken by an adjudicator in the honest exercise of judicial office. “My correspondence to the Honourable Chief Justice in response to a complaint by Chishimba Kambwili was done in my exercise of judicial
COMSAVE, ONO members appeal for Presidential intervention By ANDREW MUKOMA MEMBERS who had invested in the two financial institutions being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Commission have appealed to President Edgar Lungu to protect their interest. Some members have expressed disappointment
with Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo, who they have accused of not being sensitive to their plight. Last month, the DEC seized accounts belonging to COMSAVE and ONO for alleged flouting of their institutional mandates. The two institutions had been involved in village
functions and in strict confidence,” he said. He said the action against him was misconceived at law and that he was not the right party to be sued because he was a Government employee and the right party ought to have been the Attorney General. But Mr Kambwili and his lawyers opposed Mr Simusamba’s application, stating that soliciting for bribes does not include functions of a judicial officer. They said what Mr Simusamba did was a crime banking scheme for thousands of people both the working class and farmers in Southern Province. The members yesterday met PF Southern Province Chairman, Lawrence Evans, to help them secure their money. According to members, the two institutions should not be closed down but instead Government should give guidance to founders and members. “Yes, we are not saying they did not do something wrong. They could have done something wrong according to the Bank of Zambia, but all that we want is for our President to help serve the
and the latter could hide under the wing of immunity. They argued that it was not true that the Magistrate had been sued on issues which arose in a strictly private and confidential correspondence to Chief Justice Irene Mambilima. They said the letter was in public domain and that Justice Mambilima directed that the matter of alleged corruption be reported to the Anti-Corruption Commission who were availed the same letter and other investigative agencies. "Soliciting for bribes does not include functions of a judicial officer as the defendant (magistrate Simusamba) did, as the same constitutes a crime and the defendant cannot hide under the wing of immunity," the trio said. And in his reply, Mr Simusamba insisted that the subject matter of the law suit arose in the course of the criminal proceedings. The magistrate denied that he was an accused person in any criminal proceedings and that he had not been found guilty of committing any crime and further that a presumption of innocence applies to him. two organisations. “For us in Livingstone, we have people from the tourism industry who put in their money because they are not working due to Covid -19 but if the two institutions are closed and people lose out, we will continue to suffer,” one of the affected members said. But Mr Evens assured them he would engage President Edgar Lungu to listen to their plight. And the members are not happy with Mr Nkombo’s utterances on the issue. They have wondered why Mr Nkombo blamed those that put in their money instead of speaking for them.

Mr Green was speaking when he addressed a workshop organised by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) and AGA. He is a board member incharge of training of prosecutors, judges, and investigators of transnational crimes. Mr Green was however happy that the Zambian government recently abolished the 20 percent casino levy and introduced a new tax regime on casino, lottery, betting and gaming to boost revenue collection from the gambling industry. Stakeholders drawn from investigative wings, prosecutors, casino operators and other sectors are gathered at Sandy’s Creation in Chilanga for a two-day training workshop on money laundering in casinos. Mr Green said in the wake of Covid-19, operators of casinos, sports betting facilities and slot businesses should adhere to health guidelines as they resume operations. He said his organisation was looking forward to more cooperation with the Zambian authorities to strengthen and support the rule of law and explore ways in which to help law
Govt warns meddlers in NRCs drive By AARON CHIYANZO GOVERNMENT shall deal sternly with individuals or organisations which will interfere in the operations of the on-going mobile registration exercise and those found obstructing Registration officers shall be arrested and charged, the Ministry of Home Affairs has warned. The ministry directed police officers deployed in all registration centres to deal firmly with any form of intimidation or interference from any person or organisation purporting to be accredited monitors for the exercise. This follows intimidating behaviour and interference orchestrated by a Member of Parliament in North-Western Province accompanied by a horde of cadres who stormed a registration centre and asked Registration officers unnecessary questions. The ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Nephas Chifuta said the Mobile
enforcement agencies. Mr Green paid special tribute to the FIC for being instrumental in facilitating cooperation with law enforcement, Government, financial and civic institutions to promote knowledge exchange in fighting financial crimes in the country. He said the AGA in cooperation with FIC had been hosting a number of successful workshops on Trade-Based Money Laundering and was happy to host the virtual session on casinos in Zambia which would allow the country to detect money laundering. Meanwhile, Mr Musoma said the gambling facilities operating illegally must not be allowed to enrich only themselves because they were getting a lot of money from Zambians but never remit the required taxes. He said in a separate interview yesterday, that it was imperative that the government moved in quickly to stop the illegalities immediately. The opposition leader said such illegalities were not supposed to be allowed in the country. Mr Musoma said there was need for the law that compelled gambling facilities to remit tax to be strictly implemented so that the country could earn the much needed revenue from the sector.
Registration exercise was an ordinary operation under the Department of National Registration, Passport and Citizenship and does not call for external monitoring by any organisation.Mr Chifuta said in a statement that the ministry has its own internal system to appraise the exercise and had a mechanism to identify and revisit areas where issuance of identity cards should be enhanced or repeated. “We wish to warn some organisations which have given themselves the task to monitor the recently launched National Mobile Registration exercise,” he said. Mr Chifuta said there was no organisation that had been accredited by the ministry to carry out the monitoring exercise. He appealed to all the stakeholders to encourage children who had attained the age of 16 and above to obtain the NRCs including those who need replacement should be encouraged. Mr Chifuta said registration officers shall not be selective of who should be issued with the identity cards, as the only requirement was to meet the required age. And Mr Chifuta said claims that Government had not paid registration officers who participated in the 2015 Mobile Registration were false.

‘BEWARE OF NEW COVID-19 SYMPTOMS’ THE public must pay attention to health conditions as Covid-19 symptoms have kept changing overtime, Health Minister, Dr Chitalu Chilufya has advised. Dr Chilufya said it would be easy for health personnel to treat early symptoms if people quickly went for testing once. Citizens, he said, must pay particular attention to their health and identify any changes in their health conditions. He cited development of skin rash, excessive sweating, diarrhoea and vomiting as well as eye infection as some of the new infections of the virus. The Minister was speaking
Drop farmers who outgrow FISP, Govt told By PETER MALASHA SMALL-SCALE farmers in Mkushi have called on Government to wean off beneficiaries of Inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) after three years. The call came in the wake of beneficiaries who have clocked more than three years but still receiving subsidised inputs. In random interviews, small-scale farmers said Government should ensure that farmers that clock three years should be weaned to give room to others. They said the programme was designed to benefit many farmers not the same ones as it was the case now. But Milimo Multipurpose Cooperative Society chairperson, William Njelekwa, said Government should instead increase the number. Mr.Njelekwa said increasing the number of beneficiaries would be beneficial to farmers as opposed to weaning them off. “Instead of weaning off farmers who have reached three years on the programme, Government should increase the number of beneficiaries,” Mr Njelekwa said. Mr Njelekwa appealed to Government to distribute inputs early for the 20202021 farming season to allow farmers prepare land on time.

Catholic Church G authority
TIME has come for the Catholic Church to imprint its authority on the degenerating political climate. At the heart of the confusion are a bunch of self-righteous sanctimonious rogues laying some claim to church authority and yet exhibiting characteristics and conduct that is anathema to the Catholic Church mission based on the virtues of Love and Justice. It is disgraceful that at a time when the country is in the grip of one of the worst disease pandemics to have hit the world, these men and women are steeped in a paroxysm of indignation, bereft on sensitivity to the damage wrought to the physical health, economic well-being and society broken by the pandemic. Their insular and single-mindedness desire to champion a political cause, that is devoid of any positive attributes will derail any effort at mending and finding solutions to the huge deficits that the pandemic has created and which deficit must be confronted with a total synergy of purpose which those in the leadership they are vilifying must lead. For all practical purposes, our economy, like most world economies is at the cusp of deep recession. Our extractive industry, which is so dependent on such markets as India is suffering from the effects of lockdowns. Our mines, among them Mopani Copper Mines which employs thousands of miners face unmitigated decline. Clearly as a nation, we must chart a way forward to maximise the benefits from the various resources that God has so generously endowed us with. The starting point should be for the church to emphasise that God, in his loving design, excludes no one, but in fact even uses the rejected stones on which to build his creative enterprise. The Pope as head of the Catholic Church has been clear and un-equivocal stating that just as we are made children in Christ through baptism, we in turn are called to show mercy and “include others in our life,” rather than becoming closed within ourselves and “our egotistical safety.” It is all very well to recount and catalogue governance sins of the political leadership, forgetting the very sins of the same rogues who enter the catalogue. Their sins are known not only by God but to the citizens to whom they are parading their hypocrisy. Their audacity and greed is shameless. Today, we publish a very sad story that Zambia is losing K800 million to gambling. We are losing other amounts to illicit mining and export of gold and other precious minerals. These activities are by ordinary men and women profiting from illicit trade. Only the church’s moral persuasion can halt this. This is where we plead for the Catholic Church and indeed all other churches to mount a campaign, a “Marshall Plan” with Government to mount a unique campaign to confront the health and economic ills that our country is yet to mount to protect and redeem the country from the worst experiences. We cannot afford hypocrites and rogues to undermine this effort. Pope Francis has categorically stated that: “Let us share in this movement of inclusion of others, in order to be witnesses of the mercy with which God has welcomed, and welcomes, each one of us.” He has said “We all need forgiveness and we also need the encounter with those “brothers and sisters” who help lead us to Jesus. Pope Francis challenged the faithful to ask themselves if they are merciful, and if they think and act in an all-inclusive way.
PURSUING JUSTICE AND EQUITY WITH INTERGRITY
OVERNMENT is now focusing on helping players in the mining sector to promote value addition to various minerals which will help the country to earn much needed revenue. Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development Permanent Secretary Barnaby Mulenga said it was a disadvantage to the country for any player to export minerals in raw form. Mr Mulenga said currently, players in the mining sector exported minerals in raw form which was denying the country the much-needed revenue. He said in an interview that mining
FILE PHOTO: Mining in Zambia companies should shift from exporting the raw form and promote value addition. Mr Mulenga said value addition would not only boost the country’s economy but also create jobs. “So my appeal is that let the players in
the mining sector change their mind-set and start doing something different. “When they promote value addition it is not only the government which will benefit through taxes but even the mining companies will be able to make meaningful revenue,” Mr Mulenga said.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed the incident which happened on Saturday in a telephone interview. She said that Mr Mwansa of Machaya Village, Chief Mungule of Chibombo is a retired Staff Sergeant in the Zambia Army. She said he shot Naomi Chiyesu, who suffered

Lumangwe Falls poised for boost By KETRA KALUNGA
THERE is need to fully develop tourism at Lumangwe Falls Heritage in Kawambwa in effort to increase visits to the site, Tourism and Arts Minister Ronald Chitotela has said. Mr Chitotela said the Lumangwe Falls did not experience dry ups thus making it a must-visit site for tourists at any given time of the year. He was speaking when he visited the site. He said the Lusenga Plain National Park boundary would be extended to include the Lumangwe Falls so that the two could be sold as one tourism package.
We’ll work hard and talk less - Lungu By MICHAEL MIYOBA and OLIVER SAMBOKO
PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says his Government will focus on developing infrastructure and improve productivity rather than engaging in politics of talking. The Head of State particularly stressed that his administration would ensure good roads were constructed and would also rehabilitate run down infrastructure. He was speaking after commissioning the Makeni Flyover Bridge in Lusaka which opened to the public yesterday. Mr Lungu said there can never be development without good roads. He was happy that the Ministry of Local Government and the contractor, Afcons Infrastructure Limited, worked in harmony. Zambia and the Indian Governments financed the project, which is aimed at decongesting the city. President Lungu however implored Afcons infrastructure to finish the constructions of roads for the people to enjoy the benefits of the huge investment. He said the construction of roads in Lusaka would enhance efficiency by reducing the time spent on the road. President Lungu said the PF administration would continue putting up roads and other
infrastructure regardless of what opponents say. “My Government is committed to improving the livelihood of all Zambians regardless of ethnicity gender or political affiliation,’’ He said. He said the country could not achieve its goals of development without proper road network and other key infrastructure like power stations. And President Lungu has thanked the Indian government for the support towards the implementation of the project which involves 91.4 km of road rehabilitation, widening and construction. Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Charles Banda said the Lusaka decongestion road project would be completed in December this year. Dr Banda said works which include the construction of offices for the Ministry of Local Government by the same contractor were at 70 percent. At the same function, Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Ngulkham Gangte reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue working with Zambia. He said India was not just working with Zambia to develop infrastructure but also in the fight against COVID-19.
Mr Chitotela Mr Chitotela said the government would soon start putting up additional basic infrastructure at the Lumangwe Falls heritage site in an effort to open up the Northern tourism circuit. He said already, Zesco was putting up a pole line so that the site could be connected to the national electricity grid. Mr Chitotela said President Edgar Lungu has directed that Kawambwa airstrip be upgraded to bituminous standard so that bigger aircrafts could be able to land. The minister said the tourism industry would be boosted in the northern tourism circuit once the Kawambwa airstrip is upgraded.

Prioritise education, youths urged By BENNIE MUNDANDO YOUTHS should prioritize education if they are to improve their lives and those of their families, Lusaka Lawyer Dickson Jere has advised. Mr Jere, who was guest of honour at the blousing ceremony of youths at Reformed Church in Zambia, said education was the only equalizer in life that could turn poor youths into successful citizens. “You have to invest in education. Do not be content with what you have. Always aim at improving your education,” Mr Jere told over 50 youths that were bloused by Reverend Penias Mbewe of Matero RCZ. He said even changing careers in life was possible like he had done from journalism to law so long as one was committed and focused to achieve the set goals of his life. “It is possible and it will be possible. Just focus. You can move from being a nurse to top surgeon,” Jere told the youths at the ceremony. “I want to see lawyers, doctors, accountants and economists from this group. It is all possible despite being from Matero,” Mr Jere told the jubilant youths. And Rev Mbewe urged the youths to be the light of the society and use their Christian principles to change their fellow youths in Matero. “Be the light in Matero. I want to see innovators from this group,” Rev Mbewe said in his sermon to the graduants. He said he was impressed that youths have demonstrated real zeal to achieve their goals and urged parents to enrol their children in the youth ministry. This, he said, would enable them grow with the Christian principles.

FIRE TRUCK LIES IRK LCC By NATION REPORTER
THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) is incensed by fake news insinuating that the fire truck that rushed to an emergency scene in Kabwata on Sunday ran out of fuel. A video footage has gone viral on social media showing LCC fire truck in Kabwata with officers visibly struggling to operate the machine. Some sections of society have posted information insinuating that the truck ran out of fuel. But LCC public relations manager, George Sichimba, said the fire truck was an emergency vehicle and always had fuel even under challenging times. Mr Sichimba said the truck did not run out of fuel but that the officer in charge (operator) upon arrival at the

I did not harass UPND woman, says PF councillor By NOEL IYOMBWA IT is futile for some political opponents to try and gain political mileage by dragging my name into falsehoods, Lubwa Ward councillor Humphrey Kapapula has said. He was reacting to allegations that he sent Patriotic Front cadres to harass a woman in Woodlands for exhibiting a UPND Chitenge at her make shift shop. Mr Kapapula said his interest was to safeguard all citizens despite their political affiliation. He said it was unfortunate that some opposition politicians had reached desperate levels of making false allegations against ruling party members to gain mileage. The councillor said that the lady in question had been trading at that place
for a long time and that he had supported her by providing protective clothing against Covid-19. “Some people want to gain political mileage by implicating others, it’s unfair. I have offered support to the lady in question by providing protective clothing to her so that she could mask up because my interest is for all the people of Lubwa ward, despite being her trading illegally. “According to the new Local Government Act, it is a public nuisance to trade outside the market and despite us noticing that, we have not removed her but instead she is accusing me of sending cadres to harass her,” he complained. Mr Kapapula explained that he has offered to look for a better place for her and gave her his line so that she could call him if anyone harassed her. Last month, UPND cadres accused Mr Kapapula of sending cadres to beat up the woman who appeared in a video two weeks ago complaining about failure by the police to tame the cadres.

THE United Nations (UN) has temporary closed all premises in Lusaka for two weeks after four of its staff and three associates tested positive to COVID 19. This is according to UN national information officer, Mark Maseko. Mr Maseko said in a statement that the 14day closure had been necessitated to allow the organization strengthen COVID-19 preventive measures. He said the UN in Zambia had introduced strict measures, including temperature checks, hygiene and sanitation stations, wearing of masks and physical distancing

He said the counter measure was to use the manual operation because the truck had both manual and automatic systems. “The manual operation of the truck worked very well
and the job was executed,” Mr Sichimba added. Mr Sichimba advised members of the public to verify facts with officers in charge before sending out wrong information. He said misinformation that the truck ran out of fuel on its way to the emergency
scene should therefore be dismissed with the contempt it deserves. “The lies are being peddled by those who have ill motives about the fire trucks but they should be reminded that the truth will always triumph over lies,” Mr Sichimba said.
4 UN staff in Lusaka test positive
…as offices are temporarily closed even before the four UN personnel tested positive. Mr Maseko explained that the UN in Zambia had been operating on a reduced physical footprint since the activation of its Business Continuity Plan (BCP) in March this year. “All UN agencies continued their operations in support of Zambia’s development and humanitarian priorities, in particular the implementation of the Government COVID-19 multi-sectoral contingency and response plan, with
many of its personnel working under partial or full-time telecommuting,” he said. He however, further explained that throughout the closure, the UN in Zambia will continue operating on a full-time telecommuting arrangement as per normal working hours. “The closure will facilitate necessary additional preventive, protective and tracing measures following a rise in the number of cases in the UN family in order to mitigate and prevent
contamination risks in its premises,” Mr Maseko said. Mr Maseko said the UN in Zambia would continue standing in solidarity with the Government and people of Zambia as it has done over the past 56 years. Additionally, he said, the UN would continue its support to the COVID-19 Multi-sectoral and Contingency Response Plan, the implementation of the 7th National Development Plan (7NDP) and all efforts to help the country recover from the impact of COVID-19.

THE United Church of Zambia (UCZ) has called on youths to remain peaceful and not to be used as political tools of violence during the campaign for the pending Lukashya parliamentary by-election in Kasama. UCZ Northern Presbytery Bishop, Maybin Mulenga, said youths should not entertain politicians who would want to use them as tools of violence. Youths, he said, should instead embrace unity and tolerance for everyone as a way of promoting love for one another. Bishop Mulenga further urged political parties that would participate in the Lukashya by-election not to ferry cadres from other districts, saying the habit was a recipe for political violence among youths. The clergyman, who was speaking in an interview in Kasama called on youths to love one another so that the country could remain peaceful and united. Shoprite exits Nigeria after 15 years JOHANNESBURG - Africa’s biggest grocery retailer, Shoprite, is exiting the continent’s most populated country, Nigeria, after 15 years. The Cape Town-based retailer has started a formal process to consider the potential sale of all or a majority stake in its supermarkets in Nigeria, it said in a trading statement for the 52 weeks to end June released yesterday. South African retailers have struggled in the Nigeria market and most recently Mr Price has exited the market after Woolworths did the same six years ago. In the statement, Shoprite said the results for the year do not reflect any of their operations in Nigeria as it will be classified as discontinued operation. International supermarkets (excluding Nigeria) contributed 11.6 percent to group sales,
How the next WTO chief will be chosen and the task ahead
GENEVA/BRUSSELS - Eight candidates from Mexico to Moldova are bidding to become the next directorgeneral of the World Trade Organisation to replace Roberto Azevedo, who steps down at the end of the month. The next chief would broker international trade talks in the face of widening U.S.China conflict, protectionism increased by the Covid-19 pandemic and pressure to reform trade rules. U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” policies have upended the global trading order and presented an existential threat to the WTO. Trump has called the institution “broken” and “horrible.”Washington has blocked appointments to the WTO’s Appellate Body that settles trade disputes, which now no longer has the minimum number of judges to convene. The candidates have been given two months to campaign until September 7. Normally this would involve trips to national capitals, but with the pandemic much of that is being done in a virtual format. The next phase involves whittling down the field, initially to five then two, before a final decision is taken. The WTO is a members-driven organisation with decisions reached by consensus among 164 countries. Three WTO ambassadors who chair leading committees will lead the process, seeking to establish which candidates

have the widest support. In so-called “confessionals,” members will tell this “troika” their preferences, without ranking them and without vetoes in a process expected to last two months. The first phase will be on Sept 7-16. Voting on the next director-general is seen only as a last resort if consensus cannot be reached. The process does not always work smoothly. In 1999, former New Zealand Prime Minister Mike Moore and Thailand’s Supachai Panitchpakdi divided WTO members, with a compromise finally found to give each a term, shortened to three years from four. Azevedo’s term will finish before his replacement takes office, but WTO members failed to agree on a temporary caretaker director-general, meaning the four deputies will stay on in their current roles. The Marrakesh Agreement that established the WTO in 1995 does not give a detailed description of the director-general role. The responsibilities should be “exclusively international in character.” The incoming chief would be expected to appoint four new deputies, present budget proposals, and chair the trade negotiations committee which oversees multilateral accords such as on fishing subsidies. The director-general can also intervene in trade disputes, in very rare cases offering mediation, more often by appointing people to adjudicating panels when parties cannot agree. Otherwise, the directorgeneral does not forge global trade policy, but is meant to act as a neutral broker: part administrator, part peacemaker. – REUTERS.

ZIM HEADS TOWARDS EXCHANGE RATE STABILITY
H
ARARE – Measures introduced by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) just over a month ago to stymie a precipitous Zimbabwe dollar exchange rate volatility have yielded positive results thus far, economic analysts have said. This comes as the Zimbabwe dollar has enjoyed relative stability since the central bank introduced the foreign exchange auction trading system and imposed tight restrictions on mobile money agents. The rate has moved from the fixed exchange rate regime of 25 to 1 against the US dollar, which was adopted in March this year to ensure price certainty
following the outbreak of the coronavirus, to 76.76 to 1 at the last auction last Tuesday. While the Zimbabwe dollar has lost ground continually against the greenback since the inaugural auction on June 23, the depreciation in the last three weeks, has largely been gradual, modest and in line with the objective to facilitate market led price discovery. Before the RBZ adopted the auction system and with the fixed rate in operation, the open market rate had continued to increase, which resulted in holders of forex withholding their money arguing the official rate had become sub-economic. “I think the primary source of the current
stability in the market is the forex auction system; it has had dramatic impact even though it is involved in 1215 percent of the foreign exchange on the market. “The result has been price discovery on the formal market and has been able to meet essential imports requirements and in the background, action taken against (mobile money agents) has had considerable effect in that process because it has dried up what was the source of instability in the market,” according to Monetary Policy Committee member, Eddie Cross. Cross said what was puzzling though was the sudden and dramatic increase in money supply growth over the last couple
Kenya central bank has ‘plenty of firepower’ NAIROBI - Kenya’s central bank governor says that policymakers still had plenty of firepower left to limit the damage to the country’s economy from the coronavirus crisis. Policymakers cut the benchmark lending rate by a total of 125 basis points at the onset of the crisis, lowered cash reserves for commercial banks and allowed them to restructure distressed loans. “We have plenty of firepower . . . We still have plenty of those (tools). We are willing to use them as needed, if needed, but at this moment the MPC judged that it is better to wait,” Patrick Njoroge told an online news conference, referring to the bank’s decision to hold rates on Wednesday. JOHANNESBURG Manufacturing output levels are stabilising, but employment prospects are still worrying, the Absa Purchasing Manager’s Index for July revealed. The data released yesterday shows the PMI for July was slightly lower at 51.2 index points than the month of June which recoded 53.9 index points. The index however is still above the 50-neutral mark which shows that manufacturing output has been improving. The business activity sub-index declined slightly
Njoroge said good weather had boosted production volumes and exports of key crops like tea. A rebound in exports of flowers, as well as projected higher production of other crops like maize and higher production of cement,
promised a quicker economic recovery than earlier anticipated, he said. “All these point to strong growth in 2020 despite Covid-19,” he said, adding that the bank’s economic growth forecast would be released soon. Njoroge lowered the current account deficit
forecast for this year to 5.1 percent of GDP from the previous forecast of 5.8 percent. He cited a better-than-expected performance in hard cash sent by Kenyans living abroad, known as remittances, and the rebound in farm exports. The central bank now expects remittances to grow by one percent this year, an improvement of its initial forecast of a drop of 12.3 percent due to Covid-19. The central bank was not concerned by the recent depreciation of the shilling, which is down 6.3 percent against the dollar this year to date. “We still think these numbers (shilling’s drop) are appropriate given the circumstances,” Njoroge said. – REUTERS.
SA’s manufacturing output steadily improving, but demand subdued - data from the previous month, but was still at elevated levels. “Some respondents noted that activity is not yet back to pre-lockdown levels despite the sharp monthly increases signaled since the slump in April,” the report read. Respondents also reported increases in output levels, but also still below pre-lockdown levels. Demand is also still low with the new sales order
sub-index declining slightly. “The fact that more respondents signalled a further increase in output compared to those seeing further growth in demand, could perhaps be explained by some firms producing more in an attempt to catch up on production lost during earlier stricter lockdown levels,” the report read. “On the local front, producers supplying the hospitality
sector specifically remarked on continued weak demand, while those in the alcoholic beverages industry also reported a renewed drop in sales,” it noted. On the flipside it also showed that export sales had been lifting slightly, a first since October 2019. The employment sub-index is “particularly weak,” lingering at “record-low”levels, the report read. The sector is still

Boycotting and rejecting Bill No. 10 by UPND MPs Dear Editor, UPND MPs should support and vote for Bill 10 when it comes back in the National Assembly, when parliament resumes. If they will remain arrogant against the bill as they are and their leader as he always misleads them, then two things will happen to them: 1. They WON’T be voted back to parliament by the people from their respective constituencies even if HH and his UPND will adopt them. 2. Rejecting Bill 10 will cost UPND heavily in their strongholds in the 2021 general elections as we can see today when
A
STORY is told of one man who sought to govern. He was rustic, a rural
man. It is a sad story. The moral of his story should NOT be lost on anyone. The man smelled. There was a repugnance about him. The origins or the motivation of his passion for leadership remain unknown, obscure. His parentage is a matter of conjecture. But the man was, he existed. He was a beneficiary of the people’s goodwill as they had freely passed on their knowledge to him. But despite his having been educated by the elders, he had began to claim that he was the smartest in the village. He had began to see everyone else as beneath his standing. Like a man in an Ivory Tower, he was aloof. Over time, through trickery, the man had accumulated wealth for himself. Though he had appropriated this wealth from amongst the villagers, it filled him with much pride. He became vain. Though rich, he remained a miserly man. His major hindrance to ascending to power in the village was this smell of his. It was a very bad smell. The smell was so strong that it was lethal. It was the deadly pungency of this odour of his that repulsed the people. He smelled of tribalism. The people abhorred tribalism. Everytime he attempted to lead them they rejected him, seeing him as anathema to their wellbeing. . Everytime he followed them for their support, they would scamper, as if from a leper or a confirmed but unquarantined, moving case of coronavirus. They shunned him. Aware of his plight, and giving being our portion and forte, we sought to help him. This was after he had heard
their members are trooping out of their party. Reason: HH and his UPND are forgetting that Bill 10 has been received with both hands by 99.9 percent of their Royal Highnesses and their subjects in all their strong holds. These are the people who vote for them. They are in full support of Bill 10 but UPND MPs have completely ignored them and follow ideas of one person, their leader and strong man, HH. People know a lot of benefits that can come from the Bill No.10. People in their constituencies have fully understood what contains in the Bill and it’s benefits BUT UPND MPs pretend to be irrelevant to the wishes of their electorates. Zambia is a Christian nation. Let us do things as Zambians. We shouldn’t always be influenced by foreign powers. UPND has been influenced by foreign powers on Bill 10 who don’t want a Christian article to be included in the Republican Constitution. So all UPND members should go and support Bill No.10 otherwise they are boycotting the Bill at their own individual risk of not being voted back in 2021. People from their respective constituencies voted for them to represent them in Parliament more especially on taking development to their areas not UPND ideologies. PAUL CHILESHE.
CHIEF PILGRIM DR CANISIUS BANDA WRITES:
TALES FROM THE CRYPT (The case of the man who was so poor that all he had was money)
about our powers, and sought our attention. A time came when we visited his house, and offered to stay with him as part of the therapy. We informed him that our remedy for him was going to take a while. We assured him that, nonetheless, it would work. Expectant, he beamed with joy and happiness, quite like a cancer patient upon hearing of a cure. We told him that our help was at no charge at all; that giving was in our DNA, that all we expected from him was honesty, love and goodwill. And that at no time should he endeavour to deceive the people he sought to lead. We said to him advising, that when people have secured you, you in turn must secure them. Deodorising him was hard. It was NOT an easy task but in earnest we began our work. You see, our charms have never failed and will never ever fail. Bit by bit we began to deodorise him. Bit by bit he began to learn our ways. And bit by bit his smell lessened. A time came when he became odourless. He was even heard, in private before family and friends, joyfully admitting our talents and skills. It was at this time that out of
respect for our source, we began to burn incense for him. We cloaked him with the finest perfume of servanthood. Whenever he walked, with us, the people could only pick the incense about him. The perfume. He became attractive. We made him attractive. That is how the people began to follow him. Multitudes followed him. It was as if he had cast a spell on the villagers. His acceptance rate in the village increased. It soared. We had used a special charm called Chikoka (the magnet) on him. And it worked. Other houses sought our services as we helped him. We declined. We said that we only attended to one house at a time. That was our reason for saying no. We were loyal to him. Loyalty is key to our success. The man became so popular that the reign of the King at the time was threatened. The King’s hold on power was now slipping. The King became uneasy, started calling us names. Ischariots and all. It became clear in the village that he would be the next ruler. People began to fervently chant
his name, as if delirious, clearly possessed with the spirit of change. Aleisa! Aleisa! They would chant, taunting the reigning King. Alubwela! Alubwela! Soon his popularity got to his head. It blurred his sight and addled his judgement. Soon he forgot the source of his power. He forgot the reason behind his season. He forgot about us. A time came when he only had disdain for us. We wondered why. We never found the reason why he had began to pour scorn on us. Some people hinted that it was because we wore rags and were infested with lice. He didn’t see us as his kind, we were told. He began to associate with new friends, characters of a shady kind. Murderers, thieves, traitors, liars. It appeared to us that those were his kind, after all, birds of the same feather are said to flock together. He trashed us. Soon he began to avoid our company. Soon he didn’t want to be seen in public with us. As we sacrificed for him, we became a target for mockery. Why do you keep helping such
a man? Many, scratching their heads, wondered. Still we stuck with him, selflessly helping him. We are like the sun, you see praised or NOT, we still shine. Treachery was clearly written on the wall. He did NOT keep his side of our agreement. Betrayal had come. It hurt. But we had 1 Thessalonians 5: 18 with us. Dejected, we still gave thanks! The people witnessed our betrayal. Fear and trepidation gripped them. There was much consternation and disappointment in the land. It was as if the sheepskin had inadvertently fallen off and now they could see the wolf for what it really was. That is how we left. Calamity fell. Upon him, The Wrath had come. What he didn’t know was that, by rejecting us, our filthy rags and lice and all, he was rejecting the very people he sought to lead. Vox populi vox dei. He was ignorant of that adage that, there is fertiliser/wealth in refuse/garbage. That mkhwani wa
pa dzala ndiwo umakhala obililiwila (The vegetable that grows on a dump is the one with the healthiest leaves). Today, the stench is back. He is smelly again. He is as repugnant as before, if NOT worse. And again, the people are shunning him. The people are saying we would rather starve than be with him. Again he is unattractive. Again he smells. Again he is offensive. The veritable architect of his own destiny, this man. Though with much money, he remains poor. Rumour has it he has sent his men to look for us. He wants our help again. You see, though with not much money, our capacity to bewitch has no equal. There exist no witches like us. The good kind. Sadly, we do NOT stay in one place for ever. We have souls to save, lives to build, the lost to bewitch. We move. We are gone now. We have entered another house, as per our calling, extending our support to others. He dug his own grave, this man. Perhaps James 1: 5 might be the guide he now needs.

Borrowers should note that two financial service providers may show almost the same amount of the monetary (Kwacha) costs of borrowing. However, their Effective Annual Interest Rate may vary widely. The difference in the Effective Annual Interest Rate on loans obtained from different financial service providers arises from factors such as differences in the frequency of compounding interest, differences in the effective loan periods and differences in the average principal amounts outstanding during the effective loan periods. Irrespective of the specific structure of a given loan, financial service providers licensed by the Bank of Zambia are required by regulations 4 and 5 of the Banking and Financial Service (Cost of Borrowing) Regulations, 1995 to calculate the Effective Annual Interest Rate. The Effective Annual Interest Rate is the actual cost (price) of a loan. Financial service providers licensed by the Bank of Zambia are required by regulation 7 of the Banking and Financial Service (Cost of Borrowing) Regulations, 1995 to disclose the cost of borrowing to the borrower, at or before the time at which the loan is made. Therefore, borrowers are hereby informed to insist on financial service providers disclosing to them the Effective Annual Interest Rate that has been computed according to the Cost of Borrowing Regulations. Borrowers should also use the Effective Annual Interest Rate, including other factors such as convenience and quality of service, to decide on which financial service provider to borrow from.

KITWE LOSING COVID-19 FIGHT, SAYS FORMER DC
COVID-19

ITWE is losing the fight against Covid-19 because of high levels of complacency among residents, former District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu has observed. Mr Mpundu said the district was under siege from the Covid-19 because of lack of information on what was obtaining on the ground and lack of capacity to deal with the escalating numbers of new cases. In his posting on Kitwe Residents Blog, Mr Mpundu said the levels of complacency to social distancing and masking up was very bad in Kitwe. "I am prompted to make a comment as I can clearly state that we are losing the Covid-19 fight because of the high levels of compla-

cency and the lack of information on what's obtaining on the ground "Apart from lack of information on what was happening on the ground, there is also lack of capacity
to deal with the escalating numbers of new cases,'' Mr Mpundu said. Mr Mpundu said there was an indication that the city was under siege and so far the fight was being ham-
pered in that, some senior health officials were down. "A quick interaction with my colleagues from the health team indicates that Kitwe is under siege and so far the fight is being ham-
pered in that very senior health officials are also down with Covid -19 "The numbers of critical cases are increasing by the day such that those with minor symptoms are being
turned back to be quarantined home at their homes. Note also that when a test is done the results are not there and then and so infected people are going about infecting others,'' he said In But Free (IBF) Director Nawa Sanjobo urged Zambians not to relax, but take Covid -19 preventive measures seriously through wearing of masks, social distance and others. IBF is non-governmental organisation concerned with the welfare of inmates in various correctional facilities in Zambia and supported by a number of donors like the Norwegian Heart and Lung Foundation Mr Sanjobo said the residents should cooperate and ensure that they adhere to preventive measures.
‘PF will not yield to dishonest members’ Fish-farming, village chicken project boosted By ROGERS KALERO
THE Patriotic Front (PF) is an institution which will not yield to demands of dishonest members threatening to resign from the party, PF youths on Copperbelt have declared. Provincial youth chairman, Don Mungulube, said the party would not hero-worship members who were involved in illegal activities that could affect its popularity. He said ay member, irrespective their standing in the party, would be disciplined should they get involved in illegal allocation of land. In an interview in Kitwe at the weekend, Mr Mungulube said arrogance and disloyalty would not be entertained in the party. "Yes, politics is about numbers, but discipline is also cardinal in any institution. So people should not deliberately commit offences and when you discipline them, they threaten to leave the party. "We will not dance to the
drums being beaten by indiscipline members who threaten to resign from the party whenever they are disciplined. “Under the current situation, any responsible government can do what the PF government is doing to keep the nation afloat, but if a different political party came in, the nation would submerge because they don’t know where to touch,” he said.
Wherever they will go, they will find discipline and respect for party leadership,'' Mr Mungulube said. He said this in an apparent reference to suspended councillors at the Kitwe City Council, some of whom threatened to resign. Some councillors attempted to orchestrate mass resignation after they were suspended, but the move was abandoned as they could not
raise enough numbers. Recently, Local Government Minister Charles Banda suspended the Kitwe and Lusaka city councils for three months to pave way for investigations into rampant illegal land allocation. Meanwhile, Mr Mungulube said opposition politicians have no ability to turn the country's economy around over night, but were merely making noise to register their presence on the political scene. Mr Mungulube said the UPND and other opposition parties were more interested to assume state power to fulfil their narrow interest than fixing the economy, hence Zambians should not listen to their political rhetoric. "Under the current situation, any responsible government can do what the PF government is doing to keep the nation afloat, but if a different political party came in, the nation would submerge because they don't know where to touch,” he said.

LUANSHYA has implemented a pilot project on local chicken value chain to promote entrepreneurship and improve household income. As a result, nine demonstration farms had been set up in the district to promote the project, says Luanshya District Commissioner, Patrick Maipambe. Techno Save Organisation is spearheading the project through the Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centre in conjunction with the University of Zambia and other cooperating partners. Mr Maipambe called for maximum efforts from all participating farmers as the demonstration farms provided a great opportunity to learn and grow as farmers. He indicated that the project would ease technology transfer and adop-
tion by the farmers once completed. The project promotes value chain in fish- farming and village chicken rearing. Mr Maipambe stated that the success of the project would be determined by the number of farmers who would be able to adopt the implementation of the technology demonstration. He said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock was one of the key sectors
to enhance economic diversification and promote employment creation. He said Government had put up deliberate policy measures to improve production as well as productivity. Mr Maipambe said the favourable environment already created by the Ministry had prompted cooperating partners to move on board to supplement government's efforts in promoting livestock and fisheries in the country.

Imusho and Silumbu wards in Sesheke. UPND Information and Publicity Secretary, Neto Halwabala, charged that DMMU was no longer discharging its mandate as a
relief institution. In an interview in Livingtone, Mr Halwabala warned the DMMU to stop being used as a campaign tool by the ruling party. Mr Halwabala said that in 2021, DMMU would not be there to hand-out mealie meal for the PF. "It's normal to lose an election in opposition un-
der PF. They did not allow us to campaign in those areas because of Covid-19 and on top of that DMMU are the ones helping PF campaign. "There was a lot of vote buying and you know people in those areas are vulnerable and can accept anything," he claimed. He accused the PF Government of abuse institu-
tions to operate in its favour especially during elections, but warned that the scenario would be different next year. "Our colleagues are abusing the laws. Yes, PF making inroads in those areas is not something that can make us lose sleep. We will be equal to the task in 2021," Mr Halwabala said.

NGO wants more women in engineering By ANDREW MUKOMA
ZAMBIA needs to promote the female to get into engineering field as it is not the preserve of men only, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has said. AFRICAN Woman Foundation (AWF) noted that women should be viewed as equal partners in development in Zambia. AWF executive director, Joseph Moyo, said his organisation was duty-bound to support the female gender, especially the needy. He was speaking in Livingstone after his organisation resolved to take over sponsorship of young lady who left the University of Zambia (UNZA) in 2017 after her father died. The NGO has since appealed to UNZA to expedite the process of admitting the lady back into school. AWF would sponsor, Pascalina Kaluba Musakanya, who left the school of engineering in 2017 due to failure to pay school fees. This was after her father who used to work for Zambia Railways Limited died during the same period. Ms Musakanya left UNZA as a second year student and since then, she had not been able to raise funds to go back to school and was never accorded an opportunity for bursary. Mr Moyo said his orga-
nization has a mandate of championing women's welfare, hence the decision to sponsor Ms Musakanya to complete her degree programme. Mr Moyo said that if a woman was empowered, society could develop adding that men should start respecting women as equal partners in development. He said that it was sad that a young lady could be thrown out of school due to lack of money to pay for her education. "As African Woman Foundation, we got some information about her from caring people through social media who made us aware about the story of Kaluba Hearing the story, we searched for her and we found her, heard her story and saw it. It was a story of dying dream. "Her career of being an engineer is seen as a preserve of men. So, we were saddened with her situation and we have decided to adopt her and sponsor her back into school," Mr Moyo said. He said Zambia needed to have more women in the engineering field to break the wrong notion that the field was a preserve for men. "As a foundation, our appeal is to the University to speed up the process of readmitting her into school so that she can start learning. Our Organization will sponsor until she finishes," he said.
‘Itezhi Tezhi fish traders need cold rooms’ By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
GOVERNMENT should help facilitate the establishment of cold rooms for storage of fresh fish in Itezhi Tezhi district in order for the trade to thrive sustainably, says Obert Namalongo who is UPND Itezhi Itezhi aspiring parliamentary candidate. Mr Namalongo told the Daily Nation that traders dealing in fresh fish and kapenta in Itezhi Tezhi experienced losses due to lack of adequate storage facilities. "Fish and kapenta business is a fragile one due to the products being perishable. These products therefore require proper stor-
age," he said. Mr Namalongo noted that traders in the district relied on household refrigeration which was neither enough nor conducive for the business to flourish. He also observed that the bad patches on the road network had also negatively affected the business as delivery was delayed and that the fish ended up going bad. He lamented that the vehicles broke down regularly due to the poor state of the road network and traders ended up losing their fish. Mr Namalongo said the fish industry in Itezhi Tezhi had massive potential if well managed.

NEWS OF THE WORLD
J At least 5 Mali soldiers killed by rebels amid heightened political crisis BAMAKO - Twin attacks have left at least five soldiers dead in Mali, a Sahel country mired in a political crisis that has sparked international concern. Five soldiers were killed and five others wounded in an ambush on a military convoy and an artillery attack on a camp on Sunday, both attacks blamed on rebel fighters in central Mali, army and local sources said. The bloodshed came some six weeks after rebel fighters ambushed a military convoy, also in central Mali, killing 24 soldiers. The latest attacks came as President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita faces insistent calls to resign from an opposition angry over the brutal conflict, as well as dire economic conditions and perceived corruption. Much of the current tension
was sparked in April when the Constitutional Court tossed out 31 results from long-delayed parliamentary elections – a move that benefitted Keita’s party. The so-called June 5 Movement (M5-RFP) has continued to insist on Keita’s departure, despite two mediation missions by the regional bloc ECOWAS that suggested a new unity government and a resolution to the election quarrel. In Cameroun, suspected militants from Islamist group Boko Haram killed at least 16 people and wounded seven early on Sunday in a grenade attack on a camp for displaced people in the northern part of the country, a local official said. The assailants threw a grenade into a group of sleeping people inside the camp in the village of Nguetchewe, district mayor Medjeweh Boukar told Reuters. The camp is home to around 800 people, he said. The village is located close to the Nigerian border. Boukar was informed by residents that 16 had died. A security official earlier said 15 had died. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, they said. – AFP/REUTERS.

OHANNESBURG South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned of harsh action on “hyenas” who are profiteering from public funds intended for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. His stinging remarks, contained in his weekly newsletter, are aimed at state officials who are accused of taking up government tenders, business people who are inflating prices of supplies of protective gear and local administrators who are stockpiling relief food. “Attempting to profit from a disaster that is claiming the lives of our people every day

THIEVING ‘HYENAS’
…Ramaphosa warns ‘hyenas’ stealing Covid-19 funds is the action of scavengers. It is like a pack of hyenas circling wounded prey,” President Ramaphosa said. “We are witnessing theft by individuals and companies with no conscience.” His own spokesperson took a leave of absence last week after her husband was adversely mentioned in connection to tenders in Gauteng’s province health department. The couple deny any wrongdoing. The president vowed bold actions against those who will
be found culpable of misappropriating Covid-19 funds. South Africa is the hardest-hit on the continent by the pandemic and passed half a million mark of cases over the weekend. And three ministers in Gambia’s government have tested positive for the coronavirus, officials said, days after the nation’s president went into self-isolation. – AFP/ REUTERS.

Kakunta’s clumsy mistake in the 82nd minute. The 2-1 win over Rangers propelled Power to seventh on the log with 41 points, on par with Kabwe Warriors who dropped one position down the 18-team Super Division table while Rangers remain fourth with 46 points, two points behind the league leaders NAPSA Stars who are on 48 points. Meanwhile, Green Eagles ambitions of scooping the league title were crushed by Kansanshi Dynamos who held the Choma-based outfit to a goalless draw. The draw ruled out Eagles from the title fight contested by defending champions Zesco United, Nkana and NAPSA Stars who will face Forest Rangers in their final fixture tomorrow.
Borussia Dortmund set deal deadline for Man Utd target BORUSSIA Dortmund have set a August 10 deadline to agree a deal for forward Jadon Sancho - who is Manchester United's top summer transfer target - to leave the club. The German club have told United they want in excess of £100m for the 20-year-old England winger. There is no agreement yet on a fee, which would be paid in instalments. Dortmund have set the deadline because they want undisturbed preparation for the 2020-21 Bundesliga season. The new campaign starts on 18 September, with the transfer deadline for international deals on 5 October. Sancho has been at Dortmund for three years, having signed from Manchester City in August 2017 for a fee of about £10m. In July, Dortmund beat United to the signing of 17-year-old English midfielder Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City in a deal that could be worth over £30m. They also bought Norway forward Erling Braut Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg earlier in the season - another player United tried hard to bring to Old Trafford. - BBC
able to contribute". F1 boss Chase Carey has donated $1m of his own money towards the sport's diversity programme, a figure matched by the FIA. But F1 has faced criticism for what some have perceived to be mixed messages from its anti-racism demonstrations. The first one at the season-opening Austrian Grand
Prix was well organised, although six drivers chose to stand rather than take the knee alongside world champion Hamilton. After two subsequent demonstrations at the Styrian and Hungarian Grands Prix were messy and haphazard, F1 put aside some time for a more organised demonstration before the British race on
things are NEEDS and so they are essential and therefore a priority and that other things are WANTS which they can do without and can be considered after the NEEDS have been taken care of.
Money Management Lessons Begin From Home – Making Time Count, That Time Is Now… include teamwork, prayer and sharing. In our story today, we add Saving to the list. We are saying that a family that saves together becomes Money Smart together! Saving Together Saving together means that you plan your finances as a family. It means that you include your children in the planning. Remember that it is not too early to teach your children about money. When you start early enough, you help to shape positive habits and instil valuable money management lessons in the lives of your children. You will not only raise Money Smart adults, but you will also help to create a prosperous future for them.
Maria Karima
Head - Corporate Affairs & Marketing Investrust Bank Plc Dear Reader, We trust that you and your family are keeping safe more than ever before as we fight COVID -19 particularly now that the number of cases are increasing at an alarming rate. We continue to tell stories of how you can conduct banking and other business better and in safer ways as well as how you can take advantage of opportunities that arise during this difficult time. Strict adherence to health and other guidelines cannot be overemphasised at this point. We are encouraged to support initiatives that have been put in place to protect us from the ravages of the COVID -19 pandemic. In today’s story, we focus on how we can maximise the time that we are spending with our children seeing that their playing time and visitations to friends’/other family members’ homes are restricted. We share a brilliant idea of how you can introduce lessons about Money Management as you help your children with their e-learning. Make this time count. Make Money Talk/Lessons a family affair during this time and set your family on a path to financial success, there can be no better time than now to teach your children about money and the importance of saving. For purposes of this story, it is important that we have a common understanding of ‘family’ because the word is a powerful one that invokes multiple different meanings and emotions. Family means different things to different people. Let’s work with the following definition: “A family is a group of two people or more (one of whom is the householder) related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together.” To some, family goes beyond this to include friends, and in some cases, friends are deemed to ‘mean’ more than family. If you understand Bemba, the proverb ‘ukwangala kwachila ulupwa’ loosely translated as ‘friendship surpasses family’ couldn’t be more appropriate. Shared Values And Beliefs Whichever way one views/defines family, we believe that the underlying principle has a lot to do with shared values/beliefs. This translates into families sharing values that shape the way they live. Some of these values
Jadon Sancho scored 17 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances last season as Borussia Dortmund finished second
Sunday, something which will continue for the foreseeable future. A video of the drivers expressing their opposition to racism was played and all wore T-shirts bearing anti-racism messages. One further driver - Haas' Kevin Magnussen - chose to stand, taking the total to seven out of 20. - BBC
Getting Started – Have Powerful Friendly Conversations Begin by making your children understand that most things cost money and that managing a household involves money. Let them understand that water, electricity, food and taking them to school requires money. Let them appreciate that this money is earned. Please be sure not to make these teachings so ‘hardcore’ like Accounting classes make the lessons fun and easy for them to assimilate without difficulties. Begin to assign appropriate chores to them early enough and based on their age. That way, they will appreciate the fact that money does not fall from heaven and that it does not grow on trees. You can also assign them with responsibilities to monitor expenditure – some can be tasked to ensure that they monitor electricity usage by seeing to it that appliances are totally switched off when not in use. In addition, they can also be tasked to compare monthly usage which they should analyse and thereafter make suggestions of how improvements can be achieved. You can also allow them to keep a record of money spent each time electricity units are purchased. Other children can be in charge of monitoring the food budget or entertainment budget. Let them keep a trail of how much you spend when you take them for treats and have consistent discussions regarding how you are spending money collectively. Empower them with decisionmaking skills by giving them the opportunity to make independent suggestions of how the spending can be controlled. Remember to keep the process simple. Granted, young children are not expected to make financial contributions, they are however expected to contribute something around your home. This contribution takes the form of chores assigned to them. When your children start work whilst staying with you, they need to contribute financially to the household expenses, and you must ensure that this happens. Plan Together Set goals together and plan - for instance, at the beginning of the year. Discuss what your priorities are for the year and remember to make these detailed. Each member of the family can itemise their needs for school such as school bags, books and shoes. They can also indicate items such as special clothes for parties or church and treats ranging from movies to eating out. At this stage, you must ensure that they understand that some
Be Smart Role Models Remember that kids form habits and attitudes by watching and observing. This calls for you as parents/guardians to demonstrate good financial practices whenever possible. You can, for instance, encourage your kids to put some of the money they have earned by performing chores aside as a build-up to growing money to purchase something they really fancy but cannot afford to purchase. This way, they will learn that conducting cash purchases as opposed to credit, is better. You can also encourage them to compare prices as they are saving towards something. When you model positive financial decisionmaking early enough in their lives, you are helping them to avoid dangerous ills of debt later in their lives. When You Win – Reward Yourselves! When you have achieved your saving goals as a family, be sure to celebrate your success by giving yourselves a treat. Remember that this need not be very elaborate when you don’t have enough money. Spend only what you can afford or planned to spend on your treat. Remember that saving is an activity and not an amount. Start Small and Think Big! From The IBP Family To Yours You are family, we bet you eat, play and pray together. We are saying, why not Save together? Remember saving is a life skill, and it is never too early to begin teaching your children about it. As you set to do this, we leave you with a summary of the following key lessons essential in successfully making Savings a Family Affair: •
Have great and fun conversations – ensure that you have a collective understanding of saving and why it is important.
•
Set goals and plan.
•
Live within your means as a family.
•
Optimise your home – use resources well, share tips on how you can control things like water and electricity usage.
•
You are a unique family – adopt Saving strategies what work for you, don’t be afraid to try out new strategies that you discover along the way.
•
Money, when not well managed, has a damaging effect on relationships – your family deserves better!
Discuss money freely as a family, and please do not avoid this subject. Saving as a family and teaching your family great skills regarding positive use of money will be beneficial to you for many years to come. As the Investrust Bank Plc (IBP) family, we wish your family all the joy and success that come with managing money well today for a better tomorrow. Be a Money Smart family to live a better life. Please be sure to stay safe. Until next week, stay blessed and be a blessing to others!

Nkana committed to paying Walter Bwalya By MICHAEL MIYOBA
NKANA FC Chief Executive Officer Charles Chakatazya says the Kitwe giants remain committed to paying striker Walter Bwalya the alleged US$32, 000 owed to him in sign-on fee arrears. He said Nkana will soon pay the second installment of the debt after the club paid Bwalya the first instalment of what was owed the former Nkana striker who moved on a permanent transfer to Egypt's El Gouna Sporting Club. Chakatazya said Nkana has struggled to pay the second installment because of lack of income generating activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are still committed to paying Walter Bwalya and we have paid the first installment now we are pushing to pay the second installment. “It’s not that we have refused to pay him. No! It’s because there has been no income generating activities, every team is struggling if you can see now we are playing games without fans
that is a huge loss in terms of income generation but the issue of Walter Bwalya is something we will resolve,” Chakatazya said. “We have done a payment plan and the first installment was done and the second installment was supposed to be done in July but we are still making ar-
rangements to pay it’s not like we don’t want to give him,” he said. Bwalya’s representatives requested that Nkana be docked three points, cover the case costs and that they pay interest of five percent per annum as it exceeded a year that Nkana owed Walter Bwalya.
Chakatazya however said it would be unfair for FIFA to deduct points from Nkana because they haven’t failed to pay the player what is owed to him. He said Nkana’s case is different because the club never failed to pay salaries and has managed to pay the first installment of the money owed to Bwalya. “If the only punishment is deducting points then I don’t know which law will be applied because we have a similar case with Steven Adams which FIFA ruled and they never talked about points’ deductions so I don’t know where people are getting the preconceived idea that six points will be deducted,” Chakatazya said. “Our situation is different from other clubs had their points being deducted because they failed to pay players’ salaries. Our situation was a dispute on the sign-on fee in a pre-contract which doesn’t talk about salary arrears,” Chakatazya said.
Makembo salutes FAZ By MICHAEL MIYOBA ZAMBIA Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) patron Peter Makembo has hailed the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for supplementing President Edgar Lungu’s efforts in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. In an interview, Makembo said the decision to end the MTN/FAZ Super Division prematurely would help stop the spread of the pandemic which has claimed many lives not only in Zambia but globally. Makembo said the Covid-19 pandemic fight is a global challenge which requires the commitment of all stakeholders. He said continuing with the games would endanger the lives of players from the different clubs which compete in the Super Division and the National Division One
