PURSUE PLUNDERERS PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has finally broken his silence over the raging debate on the country’s privatisation programme of the 1990s in which State-owned enterprises were sold – often dubiously.

And his statement will definitely send shivers among some of the key players in the privatisation programme who allegedly abused the system and profited handsomely.

Some ended up as major shareholders in the companies they were assigned to sell on behalf of the government. All these allegations are in the public domain.

President Lungu has been a silent listener to the debate and has not made any public comment until yesterday.

Mr Lungu warned that individuals who sold public properties dubiously will be followed up. He was speaking during a rally at Chilindi Secondary School in Mbereshi to drum up support for the PF candidate in the Mwansabombwe parliamentary by-election, Mr Kabaso Kampampi.

“Inga bashama twalabakonka (if they are unlucky we will follow them). They have sold our mines, our hotels but Zambians will not allow that anymore,” declared President Lungu.

What has come to the fore is that one of the country’s leading opposition leaders has been mentioned as one of the beneficiaries of the flawed privatisation process.

What has brought a public furore is that prized state assets were undervalued, leaving the country with nothing to show for – the sale of KCM and Livingstone’s Hotel Intercontinental.

Lending credence to President Lungu’s warning is the disclosure that Government may not have received any payment from the sale of the mine and assets valued at $2.909 billion.

The mine was handed to Vedanta before consideration was paid, although a $25 million is believed to have been injected into working capital and not as consideration for the sale of the mine and assets.

United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has found himself in the spotlight to shed light about his role in the privatisation programme of the 1990s.

The gist of the matter is that Mr Hichilema allegedly manipulated the privatisation programme in which he was one of the consultants engaged by the MMD government to help in the disposal or sale of state-owned enterprises.

The calls for Mr Hichilema to come out clean increased when former Finance Minister Edith Nawakwi questioned his conduct during the privatisation era when she appeared on a recent programme on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview.

Ms Nawakwi, who is FDD president said Mr Hichilema did not declare interest in the sale of Intercontinental Hotel in Livingstone to Sun International despite having interest in it.

She said he only advised Government that the lowest bidder was the best because the firm would invest US$50 million and create more jobs unlike other bidders.

According to Ms Nawakwi, the privatisation documents for Intercontinental Hotel indicate that Sun International of South Africa, with a bid of US$5.65 million for the hotel was the lowest bidder even if it was offered the deal.

The transaction document states that Victoria Falls Travel Bureau, a private company incorporated in Zambia bid US$20 million but was sidelined.

“Mr Hakainde convinced us that the highest bidders were only going to buy the hotel and change a few things but use it as it was. He said the lowest bidder was ready to invest US$50 million, which would result in more jobs. We accepted because we wanted more jobs for our people,” she said.

In a nutshell, Sun International, registered in South Africa was linked to Mr Hichilema. And to add some drama, Senior Chief Mukuni is a partner in the business.

Indeed, President Lungu is right that suspected plunderers of state assets be followed up even though some are now claiming that it is a veiled threat to “eliminate” them.

Let the truth prevail.

T is not true that Government is dispensing expired medicines to various health centres, opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) president Chishimba Kambwili has said.

Mr Kambwili said that he had made an impromptu visit to both Medical Stores in Lusaka and the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZMRA) to verify if HoneyBee had supplied expired drugs, and found that it was not true.

This follows allegations that HoneyBee Pharmacy had

supplied toxic drugs after being illegally awarded a US$17 million supply tender by the Ministry of Health.

According to a statement issued by NDC deputy media director Kaoma Musonda, Mr Kambwili on Friday last week visited Medical Stores and ZMRA and discovered that the allegations were false.

Mr Kambwili who condemned public health care misinformation, said what he saw was contrary to what was peddled in the media.

He said after interacting with authorities at Medical Stores and ZAMRA, he was assured that Government was not dispensing expired

medicines to various health centres.

“ZAMRA explained that the authority had a duty of making sure that the public was protected from harm. Before any medicines are brought into the country, there are processes which take place in terms of evaluating products from the information point of view,” Mr Kambwili said.

Mr Kambwili urged stakeholders in the public domain to be cautious when it comes to disseminating information bordering on health because wrong information could make people in rural areas to shun health care services.

ECZ voter registration period challenged Apologise for

MICHAEL Zulu, and four others have sued the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in the Lusaka High Court seeking an order that the 30 days voters’ registration period it set is illegal.

The five also want the court to order ECZ to retake the decision that requires all already registered voters to participate in a process of voter validation.

This is according to an application for leave to apply for judicial review filed in the Lusaka High Court by Mr Zulu, Mr Chama popularly known as Pilato, Mr Brian Bwembya (B-Flow) , Mr Nawa Sitali and Mr Muleta Kapatiso.

Other reliefs been sought by the applicants is a declaration that the said decisions are illegal, irrational and/ or unreasonable and procedurally improper as they

contravene Part II of the Electoral Process Act and Regulations 8,10,11 and 12 of the Electoral (registration of voters( regulations statutory instrument no.38 of 2010.

If leave to apply is granted, the applicants want a direction that the hearing of the application for judicial review be expedited and such leave should operate as a stay of the decisions to require already registered voters to present themselves before a registration officer again or else be precluded and/or prevented from voting in the 2021 general elections.

Mr Zulu and others stated that ECZ intends discarding the register of voters and conducting an entire reregistration and new registration process within a period of one month, when the Electoral regulations, 2010 under regulation 8 provide that registration should be continuous.

They stated that discarding a register of voters and

attempting to re-register voters within one month cannot be said to be compliant with the requirement for conducting continuous voter registration.

The applicants stated that the ECZ has acted unreasonably by its willful or negligent disregard of express statutory provisions under the pretext pf seeking to improve the voter integrity and taking into considerations extraneous factors cited in support of its decision.

They said this include the recommendations of local and international observers of the 2016 general elections , audit of the 2016 register of voters, implementation of the recommendations of the 2019 delimitation exercise which have no force of law , improved biometric processing through capture of additional information such as 10 fingerprints which capture additional information.

Lungu urges MPS to be humble

President Lungu said he was spotted by late President Michael Sata when he was an MP in Chawama and uplifted to higher levels because of being humble and respectful to the electorate.

And the Patriotic Front (PF) media director Sunday Chanda said it was sad that Mr Hichilema used obscene language at a public rally predominately attended by children and mothers.

Mr Nakacinda said Mr Hichilema should be ashamed for issuing insults on a podium where he was supposed to explain what his party would do for people when ushered into office.

He was reacting to the UPND president, Mr Hichilema’s insulting language during a rally in Lukashya.

Mr Nakacinda, who is also Tonga apologised on behalf of his tribesmen, saying that Mr Hichilema was a disappointment.

Mr Nakacinda said Tonga culture does not allow use of vulgar language especially in the presence of children.

Meanwhile, Mr Chanda has described the insults as a taboo and has since demanded for an immediate apology from Mr Hichilema.

Mr Chanda in a statement said the use of obscene language was an offence under the penal code, CAP 87 of the Laws of Zambia and that the Zambia police should launch an investigation in the matter.

And PF Lusaka province Chairperson Daniel Kalembe has also questioned the caliber of Mr Hichilema who could insult openly in public.

Northern Province Police Commissioner, Richard Mweene, said that the trio allegedly attacked a mobile NRC registration office, stole a printer and generator, among other items.

UPND media director, Ruth Dante, said it was unfortunate that the ruling party had continued violating electoral rules.

"The ruling party is not only distributing cash and other material resources in an effort to entice the voters but also destroying UPND posters and chitenge flags," she said.

Ms Dante said that other than distribution of resources and money, the ruling party had no message to offer to the people after allegedly failing to fulfil the campaign promises of 2016.

She alleged that the PF was at pains learning that Lukashya, an area that was purported to be their bedroom, opened doors to UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and his parliamentary candidate Davies Mulenga over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Mr Mucheleka and two others party officials were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery by Police in Northern Province.

This is in connection with the theft and malicious damage to property that occurred on Sunday at a designated Mobile National Registration Card issuance center in Chitamba village.

Northern Province Police Commissioner Richard Mweene confirmed that the trio who allegedly attacked a mobile NRC registration office, stole a printer and genset, among other items, were currently in custody.

He named the suspects as Patrick Mucheleka, Elias Mubanga and Samuel Ngwira who were picked by police in the early hours of yesterday.

Mr Mweene said police were still pursuing four other suspects who are on the run for the same offence of aggravated robbery and malicious damage to property.

Mr Mweene warned others intending to commit any crime in the province to think twice because police had heightened their approach in dealing with wrongdoings.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has strongly condemned the action by the UPND cadres saying the process of issuing NRCs was done transparently and during the day.

“Where is the $25 million which was paid for the purchase of Konkola Copper Mines and can the nation be told if at the mine was paid for, because now suspected this deal was a major loss for government,” the Citizens Democratic Party president, Robert Mwanza has said.

Mr Mwanza said it was baffling that such a big company could be given for peanuts and without the government receiving anything, as if someone was buying bread.

He wondered what kind of negotiators were involved in the privatization programme and in particular the sale of KCM, which he described as shambolic.

He has demanded that government provides answers on the sale of KCM because the information surfacing was indicative of something seriously wrong.

He said it was recently revealed in court that the sale of KCM to Vedanta at US$25million was a complete fraud because the mine should have been sold at $2.909billion.

The Mine was sold under President Levy Mwanawasa.

The KCM loss of US$2.884 billion marked the genesis of the mine’s financial problems and further more even the meagre $25 million, Mr Mwanza said.

Chieftainess Chandamukulu snubs HH

Chieftainess Chandamukulu of the Bemba of Lukashya in Kasama yesterday reportedly refused to give an audience to UPND president Hakainde Hichilema for having insulted Zambians.

The Bemba Chief was reportedly upset to find that Mr Hakainde Hichilema could even attempt to go see her when he knows his language has been disrespectful to the people of Northern province.

After almost an hour of trying to seek audience Mr Hakainde Hichilema was advised by one of the long serving chiefs subjects to just try next time as the chief maintained his insults are taking away the moral fiber that has been built in children for generations.

Mr Hakainde Hichilema has been advised on several occasions to desist from sending James Lukuku who keeps attacking the Bemba people and their chiefs but all in vain and as if that is not enough Mr Hakainde Hichilema on Sunday insulted at a public rally at Kapongolo. – PF media

Regular Covid screening for schools set

By SIMON MUNTEMBA GOVERNMNT says it was planning to regularly carry out Covid-19 screening at various learning institutions to curb the pandemic as they reopen.

And Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Kennedy Malama said the country had in the last 24 hours recorded eight Covid-19 deaths and 181 new cases out of 1, 608 tests done from 18 districts.

Updating the nation on the Covid-19 situation yesterday in Lusaka, Dr Malama said the ministry would heighten engagements with schools so that any case was picked to avoid the spread of the virus.

On the resumption of both non examination and examination classes, Dr Malama assured the nation that the ministry would work closely with learning institutions to ensure that all

He indicated that the cumulative number of cases stood at 13, 720 out of 132, 642 tests with 12, 380 recoveries and 320 deaths.

Dr Malama also said Copperbelt Province had continued to be a hotspot of Covid-19 cases and the ministry was on alert to stop the spread of the virus.

He said seven out of ten provinces have testing capacity for Covid-19.

Dodia highlights budget expectations

By KETRA KALUNGA THE forthcoming national budget presentation should highlight mechanisms to promote employment of Zambians, the Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) has said.

PSDA chairperson, Yusuf Dodia, said they were concerned about job losses due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Dodia said in an interview that before the pandemic, the country was already facing some economic challenges among them the prolonged load shedding which

prevented businesses from performing at full capacity, rise in the inflation rate and unstable exchange rate.

“Definitely as a nation we are concerned about job losses, we are concerned that how are we going to resolve the issues of keeping people in employment when the cost of doing business has become very high.

“Because before the pandemic in 2019 we already had some economic challenges in the country. We saw as we entered in 2020 electricity tariffs went up by 300 percent, the charges from government departments had shot up, the inflation rate was

rising and exchange rate for the dollar was also becoming very expensive,” he said.

Mr Dodia said the PSDA expected to see in the forthcoming budget presentation the increase in non-taxable income for people that earn below K6, 000 because the cost of living was high.

He added that the budget should also address the cost of doing business, Government fees and high Zesco tariffs.

The PSDA feared that if the country continued on such a trajectory then a lot of businesses would stop investing in value addition and

insults being practiced by Mr Hichilema. Ms Phiri said the insults were disheartening and wondered what kind of a leader Mr Hichilema was.

She urged electorates not to vote for candidates associated with leaders championing vulgar language.

GBM who served as Hichilema’s Vice President before defecting to the Patriotic Front said he had been instrumental in teaching HH how to speak Bemba to help him connect with the people of the Northern Region.

He said never in his wildest imagination did he ever think that HH would turn and use the newly acquired language to mete out abuse on the Bemba People.

“I taught him Bemba so that he can connect with the people of Northern Province. I am shocked that he is abusing the Bemba he learnt from me to insult us all,” said the visibly shocked GBM. He said the HH that people have had the opportunity to witness now is the real HH with absolutely no manners and that if the people of Zambia ever make the mistake of voting him into power, they would receive even bigger amounts of abuse from him.

He said it’s possible that having been a long time failure at winning elections, he has suffered some mental disorder and has urged President Lungu to help HH by sending him specialist doctors to examine him. - BATOKA BULLS

Headman in Mafinga killed

By PETER SICHALI A 64-YEAR-OLD village headman in Mafinga has been killed following a succession dispute, Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police Joel Njase has confirmed.

Mr Njase said the incident happened on Sunday around 20:00 hours at Kanyula village in Chief Muyombe’s area.

The relatives and other residents in the village have been advised through the Community Crime Prevention Unity (CCPU) members not to contaminate the scene of crime.

Mr Njase said it was suspected that the succession wrangles could be the source of the death and identified the headman as Stanley Muwowo.

The assailants were not unknown. But Mr Njase said the headman suffered multiple head injuries and an axe was used.

"The brief facts are that on Sunday between 18:00 hours and 20:00 hours the deceased went drinking in the village.

"It was further learnt that, prior to him being the village Headman of Kanyula Village, there were succession wrangles among the elderly persons in the village over his position," he said.

Mr Njase said the headman was escorted by a known person to his house but he was later found dead in a pool of blood near a make-shift store, a few metres from his house.

He said no arrest had been made yet but investigations are underway.

By SIMON MUNTEMBA THERE is no need for political players to ferry people from other towns to obtain National Registration Cards (NRCs) in Lusaka under phase one of the mobile issuance exercise because all the provinces will be catered for, Ministry of Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Masiye Banda has said.

Mr Banda has assured Zambians that the second phase of the mobile issuance of NRCs would soon be rolled out in other parts of the country not covered under phase one.

He said this on Friday after inspecting the issuance of NRCs at Lusaka’s Chilenje Community Hall.

He noted with sadness that some individuals were panicking and ferrying people to Lusaka and said the practice must be stopped as it was exposing people to various risks.

Mr Banda however said phase one of the mobile issuance of NRCs was progressing well.

Lungu urges traditional leaders to support Bill 10

By AARON CHIYANZO in Mbereshi SUPPORT the enactment of Bill 10 for chieftaincy challenges to be easily resolved, President Edgar Lungu has called on traditional leaders.

This follows calls by headmen in Mwansabombwe to upgrade Senior Chief Mwata Kazembe to Paramount status.

During a meeting yesterday at Mable Shaw Girls Secondary School in Mbereshi, the traditional leaders said Mwata Kazembe deserved the status of Paramount chief because he had a lot of chiefs under him.

In response, President Lungu said currently he did not have any powers to appoint any chief to any position.

He said Article 165 of the Republican Constitution bars anyone from interfering in the affairs of chieftainships.

President Lungu however said the current status had left chieftaincies vulnerable because they could not receive protection or intervention from Government when needed.

He said currently anyone could appoint himself chief and cause trouble for recognised traditional leaders because Government could not intervene.

President Lungu however said the enactment of Bill 10 into law would enable Government intervene in chieftaincy challenges where necessary.

He said it was only with the enactment of Bill 10 that he would be able to upgrade the status of some chiefs to Senior Chief or Paramountcy.

President Lungu appealed to traditional leaders not to be swayed by doomsayers over Bill 10 because it was progressive and aimed at restoring order in the country.

Meanwhile, President Lungu said he was appalled by reports that some clergyman had regrouped with the agenda of ushering a clergyman into the Presidential office.

President Lungu said the notion that the current politicians were not Christians was wrong.

“We are not pagans, we are Christians, Lungu is a Christian,” he said.

President Lungu called on the clergy to work with Government as they shared the agenda of uplifting lives of people.

The contractor, Mr Mtayachalo said, had created so many detours and as such it was feared that he may not be able to construct new bridges to replace the old ones.

“I am wondering why the Road Development Agency and provincial authorities in Chipata have allowed such a situation to happen without advising the contractor to work on the new bridges in phases to replace the old ones.

“In a nutshell, I feel there is a pending crisis on that road if nothing is done urgently to forestall it,” Mr Mtayachalo said.

UPND PROPAGANDA SCHEME WON’T WORK - MUSUKWA Mr Musukwa pointed out the information circulated by UPND secretary-general Stephen Katuka that Government was issuing National Registration Cards to the underage, as one of the propaganda stunts to dent the image of the ruling party.

He charged that Prof Lumumba was bitter because he was in 2018 banned by the Zambian government from entering the county.

“First of all we must remind ourselves that what Professor Lumumba is doing is just sour grapes. Because if you remember, he was denied an opportunity to come and speak at a graduation in Zambia. So, he is only showing bitterness arising from that incident,” he said.

He said as a learned individual, Prof Lumumba was expected to exhibit maximum restraint on internal political matters.

Dr Ng’oma said Prof Lumumba’s careless comments should be condemned in strongest terms, as they were likely to also destroy the good relations existed between Zambia and Kenya.

“I urge all Zambians to condemn him in the strongest possible terms because what is happening in our country is none of his business. We are a sovereignty nation, responsible for our own destiny, so we are saying, hands off.” he said.

Mr Moran explained that this was so because Zambian Breweries supported local farmers by buying cassava and other crops to produce alcohol.

AIROBI - The planned nationalisation of Kenya Airways (KQ) appeared to run into turbulence even before it could take off after National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi directed a reconsideration of the process.

This comes after the report of the Transport, Public Works and Housing Committee on the National Civil Aviation Bill 2020, was challenged by MPs in the House for failing the requisite public participation, forcing Speaker Muturi to intervene.

Muturi told MPs that he did not want to see the House acting in vain especially if the committee’s report that was questioned by MPs Tom Kajwang’ (Ruaraka), Aden Duale (Garissa Township), Bashir Abdullahi (Mandera North) and Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu) among others, is successfully challenged in court.

“I direct that the committee sets aside three days to take views from the public so that everybody feels satisfied,” Speaker Muturi ruled.

The Speaker also directed the clerk’s office to agree with the committee chaired

by Pokot South MP David Pkosing when an advertisement for the public participation should be placed in the media.

“It is only fair that we avoid a situation where it could be said that we were acting in vain,” the Speaker said while reminding the House that the route the Bill was taking is similar to the Merchant Shipping Line Act. The Act was annulled by a three-judge High Court bench on the basis that there was no sufficient public participation. The appeal is pending in the Court of Appeal.

The government is pushing for the passage of the Bill to nationalise the national carrier by merging it with the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA), the industry regulator. The merger, according to a Cabinet paper, shall then lead to acquisition and latter privatisation to return KQ to profitability. Dear Editor, RESIDENT Edgar Lungu's address before the plenary session of legislature otherwise fondly referred to as "State of the Nation address" under the new normal was not a mere calendar talk but the constant reminder to Zambians that despite the dark cloud caused by supervening events of Covid-19 virus, not all is lost.

The speech took into account while forensically evaluating the achievements that have been transformed from rhetorical theories to tangible being.

The speech broke down President Lungu's success as torch bearer of the PF-led government to more chewable chunks for easy political digestion.

It was a constant reminder for the President to periodically present himself for accountability before Zambians in whose fiduciary state power is entrusted in his safe hands.

The opposition only has misinformation as the basis of offering alternative views to the

Zambiaans.

It is evident that the new normal era has basically put the various Information Communication Technology (ICT) initiatives the PF Government implemented.

Despite the number of institutions compelled to come up with impulsive and unconventional decisions of working from home, there has been no complaints by the general public to allege inefficiency or underperformance by public institutions.

Indeed, Covid was a blessing in disguise as it has brought the technology which PF has brought about into test, and the test has been passed successfully. We talk of the over 1, 000 communication towers which are littered in all corners of the country.

With regard to the emergency of the novel Covid-19 virus, President Lungu's Government has strived to balance between the need to protect the lives of people while at the same time allowing the wheels of the economy to run its race.

The pandemic has taught us

a lifetime lesson that will virtually remind us that all sectors of the economy are important and interlinked. Kudos to businesses that survived the pandemic and confined to operate even in the era the cases rose to exponential levels. This speech has set the recovery plan in the post technical lockdown era.

The devaluation of the Kwacha can be attributed to the demands and necessities used in the fight against the virus. With our elementary understanding of economics, we can infer that this compelled the government to consume more dollars and this blew the Kwacha right in its own face.

The unforeseen effect of the occurence was attenuated by the Bank of Zambia's reluctance to allow citizen consume the K10 billion stimulus package.

During the 2016-20 era, there has been immense diversification in the agriculture sector. For the first time in history, there has been drastic shift from relying on the production of maize and farmers have casted their nest wide to pursue other opportunities.

With this vigour and determination going into 2021, the foreign agricultural products will wither away from the shelves of our chain stores and replaced by our own locally grown goods. The directive by President Lungu that chain stores should give priority to local farmers needs our concerted and collective effort if it is to bear fruit.

We are glad President Lungu has announced that anytime he may be the guest to some random chain stores to see whether they have defied the order he gave in his quest to protect the local farmers and the local economy as well.

As regards the health sector, President Lungu outlined the projects which have been rolled out throughout the country. Government has gone an extra mile to launch the various specialised health institutions and beside the facilities that exist in Lusaka, there is ongoing spontaneous decentralisation to provinces and progressively to districts.

As far as youth empowerment is concerned, the opposition parties can consolidate

We take great exception to Mr Hakainde Hichilema’s insults when he called Bemba-speaking people at an assembly of minors in Kasama.

What is even more disturbing is that his catile audience consisted mainly of children and juveniles. (Most of them non-voters) who were ferried from different parts of Zambia to create an artificial popularity. Sadly, the innocent crowd cheered every foul word by reason of being in HH’S pockets.

Just when the majority of Zambians thought that it was not possible for Mr Hichilema to sink any lower he has now sunk even lower to an all-time low. By uttering obscenities and insulting Bemba parents and adults in front of their children, the UPND leader has outdone himself in vulgarity. It is not only disturbing and disgusting!

Mr Hichilema’s predicament could very well be a case of suppressed psychosis. Like a jilted lover having been rejected multiple times but still wanting to force Zambians to love him he resorts to vulgarities. Someone sitting at the hierarchy of UPND is clearly in a sordid manic state.

Impure language comes from impure thoughts. The vulgar language speaks of the state of Mr Hichilema’s mind.

No Mr Hichilema, you are supposed to be a public figure and an elder in the church. Have some respect and decency.

You cannot insult your way to State House. Not even in jest.

It is against our collective cultural and traditional custom and our Christian values.

Council Public Relations Officer, Elvis Muleya, told the Daily Nation that the local authority was committed to improving trading places.

“Our aim is to make sure that we lead the way in promoting proper sanitation and constructing of proper toilet facilities.

“We just handed over another ablution block to management at Sichili Secondary School a few months ago in our continued efforts to promote good sanitation in the district,” he said.

Mr Muleya stressed that the local authority was working around the clock to identify the needs of the people and help mitigate the challenges.

“We therefore, request the members of the public to guard jealously these facilities so that they can last long. That is the only way they can help us serve them better.

“We will preach the message even to individuals so that everyone must take the mantle and play

a role in promoting proper hygiene standards. Every household, business entity or institution must have a proper toilet facility, that is our message,” Mr Muleya said.

The council, he said, would continue to engage in ventures that would help foster development, improve service delivery and see to it that people received the much needed services.

“As a local authority, we are determined to see to it that we improve the living standards of the people in the district by all means and we will engage in every venture available to make sure that we have enough resources to be able to de-liver services to public,” he said.

Presidential empowerment cheers residents

They said that they did not realize that the fund was real as they only used to hear about it from other regions.

On Sunday, President Lungu donated building materials to New Convenant Community Church in Livingstone through the PEIF. PEIF National Coordinator, Clement Tembo, handed over the donation and was accompanied by Southern Province Minister, Edify Hamukale, PF Member of the Central Committee Kebby Mbewe and

Livingstone District Commissioner Pascalina Musokotwane.

During the donation, Mr Tembo called upon the clergy to continue praying for the Head of State as he presides over the affairs of the nation.

“Leadership comes from God and as Christians we are mandated to pray for our leaders in authority. His Excellency appreciates the role you the church plays in our communities and nation at large,” Mr Tembo said.

And Bishop Michael Kondowe thanked President Lungu for the donations which he said would enable the congregation complete the ablution block at the church.

Lufwanyama settlers lose land?

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA SOME villagers of Luswishi ward in Lufwanyama district have been displaced from their land.

According to the complaints received from some villagers seeking redress, the three buyers bought land from the Ministry of Lands in segments of 10, 000 hectares, 5, 000 hectares and another 5,000 hectares respectively.

The displaced villagers pleaded for help with the UPND leadership that went to campaign in the area to recover their land.

“This land is the only asset we have and the only place we can leave our children on as our ancestors did for us,” one of them said.

The settlers lamented that the new owners of the land who are not known were only giving them K400 per household as compensation for them to relocate.

They said they just saw people who claimed to have bought land from the ministry developing it.

In response, UPND Copperbelt Provincial Chairman Elisha Matambo assured the displaced villagers that help was on the way for them.

Mr Matambo said that the party would help repossess the land and give it back to the indigenous owners.

He further called on relevant authorities to follow up the matter and ensure that citizens did not become destitute.

Mr Matambo and his Provincial Management Committee was in Lufwanyama drumming up support for UPND candidates in the forthcoming five local government by-elections in the district.

The elections would take place on September 17, 2020.

The PF members who were injured were identified as Kenson Mulongoti, Jonatan Mwewa, Rodson Meleka and Paxa Chamina.

AR ES SALAAM - Ten pupils have died in a fire in a school dormitory in north-western Tanzania's Kagera region.

Seven other pupils who sustained serious injuries have been hospitalised.

The dormitory was housing boys aged six to 10 years.

Police have started investigations and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The fire started at one of the dormitories of Byamungu English Medium Primary

School in Kyerwa district at around 04:30 local time.

Kyerwa District Commissioner Rashid Mwaimu said the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and

will need DNA tests to confirm the victims’ identities.

School fire tragedies happen often in the region and there are calls for authorities to enhance safety in the

Minimise Undesirable Economic Outcomes No one knows what tomorrow brings in terms of our ability to be able to earn/generate an income as a salaried employee or a business person.

This reality, therefore, calls for each one of us to plan ahead. Apart from ensuring that we work on having an emergency fund that can sustain you for a period of at least six months should anything happen to you, you are also encouraged to spend money on ensuring that your health is in good stead. Invest in having regular medical check-ups and pay strict attention to your health so that you avoid spending more money on treating illnesses which you could have taken care of had you focussed on making annual check-ups a priority. Remember that good health is paramount in everything that we do.

All those monies we spend carelessly could be put to good use.

Don’t Emergency Shop, Ever!

Emergency/impulse/emotional shopping is usually our biggest enemy in wealth creation. Let us avoid buying things as we want them. There really has to be a need for us to spend, and that need should be planned, and the plan should be adhered to. When we emergency buy, we lose out on the opportunity to practise great behaviours such as comparing prices which could save us a lot of money. How many times have you expressed shock and utter disappointment upon noticing something you purchased at say K1000.00 costs only K500.00 or less in other shops?

Remember that wealthy people are not different from us. It is their mindset and behaviours towards money that are different. We can all master behaviours that can lead us to create and sustaining wealth! Let us keep practising; let us keep learning and growing and let us create quality lives for us and our loved ones, we can do it! Please remember to teach your kids and other children under your care about the importance of money, the role it plays in our lives, and why managing it well now for a better tomorrow is key. Begin early enough in their lives. That way, you will be proud of raising Money Smart kids.

Kitwe Bullets dislodge K-Line

ITWE Bullets dislodged Kabwe K-Line from the summit of the Premier Futsal League (PFL) after humiliating CSS Petauke 9-1 in a week-2 fixture played over the weekend at Automotive Futsal Arena.

Bullets dominated play from the first whistle to get their second victory after beating Monze George 3-1 in the first round of PFL games.

The win propelled Bullets to six points, on par with Lusaka Automotive, Kabwe K-Line and Livingstone Pirates who were all triumphant over the weekend.

Pirates and K-Line beat Kafue Saints and Siavonga Beetles 4-1 and 4-3 respectively as defending champions Lusaka Automotive white washed DS Isoka 6-0.

The win cheered Automotive FC coach Andrea Christoforetti who has predicted a tough futsal season ahead.

"The level of this league keeps on growing every year and this year it will be more competitive.

"We have some new teams in the first division and they will be competing for the first time which may be challenging but that is why we have the first division and this is a big improvement for the growth of futsal in Zambia," Christoforetti said after the win over DS Isoka.

Meanwhile, DS Isoka FC coach Donald Phiri expressed displeasure that his team lost against the defending champions Automotive.

He however noted that Isoka who started the league with a 6-5 win over Kafue Saints would work on their mistakes going into week-3.

In other fixtures played over the weekend, Chipata Boys beat Monze George 3-1 to redeem themselves from the 4-3 defeat against Pirates in week-1.

In Division one, new comers Zanaco FC humiliated Blue Bombers 21-0 to remain unbeaten after week two and claim leadership of the 12team division one table.

Lilanda Bullets beat Efford Chabala FC 9-4 as BS Stars triumphed 6-3 Bil FC. Tamanga FC were egged to a 2-1 beating by Christian Academy while Pioneer Avengers stunned AJ United 8-1 to maintain a perfect start.

SPEND WISELY ‌FAZ cautions clubs over FIFA windfall

HE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has cautioned clubs to use wisely the first batch of the FIFA Covid-19 relief funds amounting to US$500, 000.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said the association has received the first instalment of funds which will be shared among clubs after the verification of account details which is underway.

Kamanga said the disbursement of Covid-19 relief funds from FIFA is expected to be in full swing this week and FAZ members will be kept abreast with the process.

He however noted that there is need for clubs to ensure that the relief funds are prudently used by the beneficiaries.

"FAZ expect that prudent usage will make it easier to dispense the second cycle of funds which are expected in January 2021," Kamanga said.

Meanwhile, Kamanga said preparations for 2020/2021 MTN/FAZ League set to kick off next month are progressing well.

Kamanga said the association is hopeful that its engagement with the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) and other key stakeholders will result in better preparedness once the season kicks-off.

Kamanga said FAZ is keen on getting the health protocols right and one of the proposals on the table is the purchase of testing kit exclusively for its members.

He said the acquisition of Covid-19 test kits will help FAZ have more control of the test and result chain.

Kamanga also hailed Presi-

dent Edgar Lungu for opening some sectors of the economy during the opening of the 12th National Assembly on Friday.

Kamanga said the move by President Lungu who is the patron of FAZ, to provide a roadmap for the re-opening of schools and bars will guide how football will be handled under the new normal.

"This is definitely a good sign that we could be closer to opening up more aspects of our lives especially football. We are confident that if schools and bars can get the act of observing Covid-19 guidelines right, it should put us in a better position to manage the football end of business.

"In the background we have been doing a lot of ground work for the next season that we have tentatively projected to re-open next month," Kamanga said.

He said FAZ is constantly engaging the ministry of Sports and their health counterparts to ensure that it covers enough ground before kick-starting the 2020-2021soccer season.

Kamanga said lower leagues that have not yet closed their season will be notified of the final conclusion after their proposals have been taken on board. He said It has been challenging to close lower leagues because of the conditions under which games are played in lower divisions.

Kamanga said infrastructural limitations make it impossible to host some of the matches in the lower leagues behind closed doors and testing protocols could have been a nightmare if FAZ was to apply the stringent standards prescribed by the ministry of health for the lower leagues.
