….backstabbing Zambians through bondholders
BY SANFROSSA MANYINDA and SIMON MUNTEMBA
O
PPOSITION leaders with an evil agenda have been going to bond holders asking them squeeze government so that Zambians can suffer and kick out the current leadership, Chishimba Kambwili revealed yesterday. Mr Kambwili, who is former
National Democratic Congress president, said yesterday when he rejoined the Patriotic Front that he had learnt some shocking things about some leaders who were more interested in getting into power than serving the interests of the nation. He said some leaders were ready to make Zambians suffer so that they could get into power and miraculously improve the exchange rate of the Kwacha, which
makes one wonder if they have been doing something to make it week. He said, while the country was grappling with many challenges including the debt crisis coupled with the covid pandemic, it was surprising that someone could go behind government and ask the bond holders not to allow government relief to reschedule the repayment period. STOP VIOLENCE
THE ugly scenes of violence that briefly rocked the gates to the Patriotic Front secretariat are unfortunate and something that the party leadership should take as an affront on its offer of an olive branch to prodigal sons and daughters. While the PF was celebrating its democracy and welcoming prodigal son, Chishimba Kambwili, the memo on reconciliation seems not to have reached the lower ranks who engaged in a violent attack on someone who considers himself one of them. We salute Lusaka Provincial chairman Kennedy Kamba for rescuing Innocent Kalimanshi from the jaws of enraged cadres who did not think he should have showed up at the secretariat which was host to most leaders who had previously been verbally assaulted by Mr Kalimanshi. The party had recently indicated that all former PF members were welcome without condition to rejoin the party, a statement echoed by party and republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. It is therefore sad to see some hooligans try to surly the name of the party by engaging in violence against one of their own and at a place regarded as home to all members. We applaud the leaders that rushed to stop the fight and to save Kalimanshi from further attack. Indeed it is a mark of leadership in particular for Mr Kamba, to save Mr Kalimanshi from the cadres who felt aggrieved by his social media posts attacking party leaders. Perhaps as the newest member of the party, Chishimba Kambwili, suggested, he should be given a chance to try and reconcile the warring parties within the party. Any effort to restore peace within the party should be welcomed, because as a ruling party, the PF needs to be above board and for its members to behave well. It is unfortunate that instead of talking about the party’s big catch yesterday, we have to dwell on this. This is however, necessary because we feel the party needs to stop some of its members who still believe in violence to discard such mentality as the country heads to the August 12 general elections. Sadly, a police officer was also injured while trying to restore order as the cadres fought amongst themselves. According to Police spokesperson, Esther Katongo, the officer was injured on the jaw as cadres threw missiles at the officers and smashed a police vehicle. The police have instituted investigations in the matter and promised to bring culprits to book And Mr Kamba says the party in Lusaka has no grudge against Innocent Kalimanshi or any member who went astray and that it is ready to embrace them as long as they are repentant. Mr Kamba said the party was ready to make peace with Kalimanshi provided he was remorseful and apologised for having insulted the PF leadership. He called for discipline among the youth members some of whom had been insulting PF leadership on social media. It is imperative for the PF to go a step further and ensure that the people involved in yesterday’s fight are disciplined. Action is needed to ensure members learn to resolve issues through dialogue and not fists.

TIME OUT FOR SUSPECTED HATEMBOS’ ABDUCTORS By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE AS the Choma Magistrate Court granted a K10, 000 each and two working sureties bail to Ackson Sejani, Fines Malambo, Vincent Lilanda, Javan Simoloka, and Senior Chief Mukuni’s wife Veronica who were detained for the offence of abduction and intent to confine Pheluna and Milton Hatembo siblings. Although, the UPND quintet was jointly charged for the offence of abduction but granted more breathing space in the pending trial, observers analysed what this might mean for Zambia’s forthcoming general elections. The protracted abduction case of the Hatembo siblings will not only determine Zambia’s likely next president, but will also be the toughest of tests yet for the country’s developing democracy and for the UPND Alliance’s already paper-thin unity. Meanwhile, the FDD president, Ms Edith Nawakwi scoffed at Pheluna and Milton Hatembo’s accusation that she wanted to kill them. Reacting to a video that had gone viral on social media in which the Hatembos had accused her of planning to kill them, she denied the allegation. She challenged the Hatembo siblings to come out in the open for the sake of their children. She also disclosed that she was keeping Pheluna’s children who had stopped eating and were dehydrated because they were missing their mother. She had asked the alleged abductors to free the Hatembos adding that she was happy to see them on video still alive. Besides, the FDD leader complained that it was nonsense for UPND to accuse her of trying to kill Pheluna and Milton Hatembo, who had been abducted. Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, Ms Nawakwi exonerated herself that it was evident that some UPND members were the ones who were involved in the abduction of the duo who then wanted to spin the matter and accuse her of being behind an illegality she was not involved in. By extension, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema’s political future would very much be determined by the outcome of the Hatembos’ abduction trial since he had vowed that he would file his nominations between the 10th and 14th of this
month, and be on the ballot paper for the upcoming elections, whether the PF liked it or not. Unless he stumbles over his mountain of legal challenges, he would be the UPND’s presidential candidate for the general elections scheduled for August 12 this year. Predictably though, UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa who doubles as the legal representative in courts for the accused Ackson Sejani and others in the Hatembo matter claimed that lack of funding from European Union (EU) countries had led the FDD leader to auction herself to the ruling party. But in stark contrast during her press briefing, the FDD leader insisted that the UPND president was behind the “disappearance” of Pheluna and her sibling for previously reclaiming their family farmland from Hichilema in the High Court, and further predicted that the UPND leader would be arrested on the day of filing presidential nominations papers. The country’s Judiciary – which presided over a court case in which the Hatembos were the key witnesses concerning the UPND leader who was accused to have fraudulently acquired farm number 1924 located in Kalomo – did not conclusively resolve the judicial process of appeal due to the disappearance of the two Hatembo siblings midway. The court decision would have to be conclusively made before the end of this month’s election nomination process which would determine the UPND’s presidential, parliamentary and local government candidates for this year’s upcoming elections. If the Hatembos’ abduction case is heard before then and Mr Hichilema together with Ackson Sejani and others are convicted, the UPND would have to call a special emergency national conference to elect a replacement presidential candidate. However, the case may now only start or even go on until after the 10th to the 14th of this month coinciding with the election nomination programme. This would not only prolong the country’s political and economic uncertainty and judicial paralysis, the decision over what to do with a major opposition party
president facing a long trial may deepen divisions within the UPND and hurt its electoral fortunes. Mr Hichilema and his supporters want all the Hatembos’ abduction charges to be dropped, claiming that it is part of a political conspiracy to prevent him from becoming Zambia’s next president. Yet, the Ackson Sejani and others charge sheet has little to do with politics. Indeed, Mr Hichilema is in a prickly situation – he has already exhausted all legal channels to dismiss the Hatembos’ abduction trial, including the habeas corpus appeal to the High Court for hitherto detained Ackson Sejani and others. Yet UPND supporters plan another series of public demonstrations, protests and solidarity marches to take place throughout the Ackson Sejani and others court case seen and heard during the time when the UPND president was warned and cautioned for the offence of conspiracy to defraud at Police headquarters that led to the execution-style killing of two innocent citizens. This is likely to raise political temperatures higher, and create more political and socio-economic uncertainty. Already the FDD and UPND shenanigans have helped slow down socio-economic growth. Certainly, it does not help that the presidential candidate of the UPND for this year’s election is its president, Mr Hichilema – a man who was himself warned and cautioned for the offence of conspiracy to defraud on issues related to the farms deals. How and why did the UPND lose its innocence? Why is the opposition party trampling on its moral compass by fielding Mr Hichilema as its presidential candidate? Why are they soiling the memory of fallen national founding fathers and the image of the country in this manner? The answer is simple. They know that the electoral damage they are going to suffer is probably limited. In short, they are confident that the political reality of balkanised regional party dominance and an electoral system that allows citizens to elect directly their head of State based on ethnicity shields the UPND from adverse political consequences.

KAMBWILI BLASTS TRAITORS From Page 1 Mr Kambwili said some opposition leader went to Zambia’s bond holders to ask them not to approve Zambia’s request to halt interest payments and debt servicing until COVID impact on the economy normalizes. He revealed that an opposition leader asked the bond holders to squeeze the current Government and so that citizens could be adversely affected and consequently turn against those in government. “Zambians must suffer so they vote for you?”Mr Kambwili asked. And Mr Kambwili has said there is urgent need to stamp out tribalism and regionalism by ensuring that political parties that encourage tribal voting are not entertained. Mr Kambwili also said it would be very unreasonable for Zambians to think of voting out the Patriotic Front because the party has performed extremely well. He noted that tribalism and regionalism was a time bomb which needed to be dealt with before it degenerate into civil strife. “If we are not careful, there will be war in this country. The citizens are voting on regional lines and that is dangerous. If a president of a political party is getting votes only from his region, it means there is something very wrong. “Tribalism must be condemned at all costs and any political party, whether it is PF or opposition that is telling people to vote on tribal lines, should be condemned. Such kind of political parties must be extinct from the political arena through the elec-
toral process,” Mr Kambwili said. He said some opposition political party has never formed government despite being in existence for over 20 years because God has not allowed it. Meanwhile, Mr Kambwili said it would be very unreasonable for Zambians to think of voting out the PF because the party has performed extremely well. “I have come to renew my card as PF member, ifintu ni PF. If you compare what the MMD built in 20 years and what the PF has built in nine years, it will be very unreasonable to think of voting the PF out,” Mr Kambwili said. He said all the party needed to do was to reduce the cost of living, more especially high prices of food stuff, saying “there was a cartel behind the high prices of essential commodities.” He also promised to pay total allegiance and loyalty to President Edgar Lungu, adding that he would remain an ordinary member of the party. Mr Kambwili said the agenda of some known opposition political party leaders who were unpatriotic was to destroy a country they desired to rule by sponsoring anarchy. And in welcoming him, PF national chairperson Samuel Mukupa told Mr Kambwili to feel at home as he was welcoming him back on behalf of President Lungu, the PF Central Committee and all the party members. PF secretary General Davis Mwila said it will be easy to work with Mr Kambwili because, “as one of the founder members of PF, he is one of us.”

DEADLY CHINESE RED CLAY FISH IMPORTATION RILES FARMERS I By OLIVER SAMBOKO
MPORTATION of the deadly China Red clay fish into the country's water bodies is a big scandal which Government should investigate and ensure that those involved are prosecuted, Small Scale Fish Farmers Association (SSFFA) chairperson Victor Chatilika has demanded. He said the Red Clay fish believed to have been imported by the Chinese who were engaged to construct the Mongu-Kalabo Bridge which has invaded the Zambezi River poses great risk to the local Fish breed and if not ad-
BY IRVIN MUYUMBWA PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has directed the Minister of Labour and Social Security to continue with processes of developing more sector based minimum wages in the economy. President Lungu said this is because government believes in the protection of workers’ rights through the development of the Employment Code Act which regulates the terms of employment. President Lungu urged the minister to expedite the process of coming up with these wages to protect the rights of vulnerable categories of employees because there are other sectors that need to be con-
dressed, the country will lose out its own species to exotic ones. Mr Chatilika also called on the government to quickly find ways of destroying the dangerous fish before it spreads to all rivers in the country. “We are being told this same fish reproduces at a faster rate and feeds on the indigenous breeds, so if nothing is done, all the gain the country has made in the development of the aquaculture subsector will go down the drain,” he said. He said there was no way any responsible officers in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries could allow such a thing to happen under their watch.
“The people who allowed the importation of this fish should be identified so that they can account for their actions,” he said. Mr Chatilika said the red clay fish has the potential to wipeout the local breed and lender the efforts by Government to reduce the fish deficit gap in the country currently at over 80, 000 metric ton of fish per annum, impossible. He said his association was aware that the fish in question breeds at a faster rate and has the potential to slow down the gains the country has achieved in the development of the aquaculture subsector, in the past decade.
Elizabeth Phiri dumped us, Kanyama pastors complain …But MP asks if it’s about putting money in their pockets
By NOEL IYOMBWA MAKENI Pastors Fellowship trustee Rev. Bupe Kabondo has complained that Kanyama Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri dumped people in the constituency despite making promises of being their servant prior to the 2016 general elections. But when contacted for a comment Kanyama Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri insisted that she has delivered development which no other MP has managed to deliver in many years. Speaking at a Pastor's fellowship on Tuesday, Rev. Kabondo said Ms Phiri who has been Kanyama MP from 2016

And President Lungu said the national productivity policy launched in March this year is aimed at achieving the twin goals of economic prosperity and improved standard of living of the Zambian people through sustainable enterprises. The Head of State said he believes a productive human resource is critical to Zambia’s development. He was speaking yesterday at the commemoration of Labour Day under the theme ‘promoting industrialization through productivity, decent work and sustaining economic development.’ And President Lungu urged employers to continue seeking
innovative ideas for their businesses to thrive amidst the impact of covid19. President Lungu said to cushion the impact of covid-19 on employers, government issued statutory instrument no. 48 of 2020 to exempt employers from some provisions of the Employment Code Act no.3 of 2019. He said government further provided employment opportunities to youths by empowering 93,444 out of the targeted 150, 000 and stated that it is gratifying that 49 percent of these are females. And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions President Chishimba Nkole expressed concern that formal employment growth has remained limited at about 10 per cent. Mr Nkole said unemployment has also kept on being on the rise with wages for those employed remaining low. He said most of those in formal employment are on the blink of economic hardships arising from the effects of covid-19 and the rising cost of living.
Zambia joins USA in tightening entry restrictions for travelers from India From Page 1 They further urged the citizens not to worry about those coming in from other countries as the efforts to ensure that only those that were fit to come in were allowed, stating that the rules of self quarantine still applied. The authorities also assured the Nation that they were doing everything possible to bring the situation under control.
And the Biden administration has confirmed that the US will restrict travel from India starting on Tuesday in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and variants being observed in the country. The policy will not apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents or other people with exemptions. As with all international travelers, individuals who fit that criteria traveling from India must still test negative prior to leaving the country, quarantine if they have not been vaccinated and test negative again upon reentering the US from India. And Ms Phiri is under fire following her recent remarks in a video that has gone viral where she blamed the underdevelopment in the constituency on the President and Government as a whole, has defended herself and claimed the pastors were being political. Ms Phiri who is also Minister of Gender said last week that she cannot be blamed for lack of development in her constituency because money does not come from her pocket and that all those blaming her were insulting the President and
government. And Makeni Pastor's Fellowship Chairperson Rev. But when contacted for a comment Ms. Phiri said her predecessor was also a Patriotic Front member but never delivered compared to what she has done in a few years. Ms. Phiri said if the pastors who are accusing her of abandon the people are siding with a particular aspiring candidate then she will take them on as politicians.
Police probe PF cadres attack ..as Kamba calls for peace
By SANFROSSA MANYINDA and SIMON MUNTEMBA POLICE have instituted investigations in the matter where some Patriotic Front (PF) cadres while fighting one another, injured a Police officer and smashed a police motor vehicle at the party secretariat. Meanwhile, PF Lusaka Province Chairperson Kennedy Kamba has said the party in Lusaka has no grudge against Innocent Kalimanshi or any member who went astray and are ready to embrace them as long as they are repentant. Mr Kamba said the party was ready to make peace with Kalimanshi provided he was remorseful and apologised for having insulted the PF leadership. His remarks follows the confusion that characterized the return of former National Democratic Congress president Chishimba Kambwili back to Patriotic Front when Mr Kalimanshi clashed with other PF cadres. The commotion ensued when Mr Kalimanshi, a self-proclaimed PF Commander forced his way into the PF Secretariat immediately Mr Kambwili entered and the furious cadres pounced on him before Mr Kamba whisked him away into
the building. Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said police would not rest until it brings the perpetrators to book and warned all those that took part in the violence to begin counting their days. " As police we shall not condone any form of violence and if anyone will be found to have participated in yesterday's violence, they shall be dealt with in accordance with the law," Ms Katongo said. According to Ms Katongo, this occurred when police officers responded to a report that some Patriotic Front cadres had descended on Innocent Kalimanshi who had gone to the secretariat where the party had a political activity. She said police who rushed to the scene had their motor vehicle smashed in the process of whisking Kalimanshi away. She said the cadres begun throwing stones at the Police Vehicle and one officer was injured on the jaw before they damaged Mr Kalimanshi's motor vehicle. A visibly unhappy Mr Kamba said all members especially youths in Lusaka were ready to bury their differences and forgive Mr Kalimanshi if he apologised for having insulted the party leadership.

ZRA CUTS OFF ROGUE ASSOCIATION
By PETER SICHALI
THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has revoked recognition of Customs Clearing & Freight Forwarders Agents Association of Zambia (CCFFAAZ) for inciting clearing agents to go on work stoppage and agitating for disruption of border operations. In a letter addressed to Clearing Agents on behalf of Commissioner,Customs services, Wagner Chilembo said ZRA no longer recognizes CCFFAAZ as one of the associations representing clearing agents. Mr Chilembo said ZRA has given 30 days to members of the

You are given 30 days to switch to any other association of your choice and submit proof to ZRA, failure to which your declarant will be blocked,” Mr Chilembo said.
Meanwhile, embattled CCFFAAZ President Bruce Kaemba has said ZRA has no powers not to recognize CCFFAAZ. Mr Kaemba said CCFFAAZ was not registered by ZRA therefore has no mandate to revoke its recognition. He said the action by ZRA shows desperation to implement the Customs Management Module at all costs. “It is shocking to see how ZRA think they can have powers not to recognize our association thereby threatening our members with revocation if they do not affiliate to another associa- Zambia Revenue Authority tion,” Mr Kaemba said. THERE is no property agreement in Lusaka earmarked for reversal or cancellation, Lusaka mayor, Miles Sampa has clarified. Recently, Government directed all local authorities to stop selling or leasing their properties and revoked all sale and lease agreements of council properties. But Mr Sampa explained that Lusaka City Council had not sold any property but that some properties were still on lease such as Lusaka Barcelona Academy sports pitch and Kuku football among others. He said therefore that there was no property whose agree-
Sino Hydro workers cry for conjugal rights By OLIVER SAMBOKO OVER 2,000 workers at Sino Hydro, the company contracted by Zesco to construct the 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station have called on Government to come to their aid force the Chinese owned company to allow them visit their homes to save marriages. The workers complained that management has been denying them permission to allow them to go home to see their families, a development that has resulted in some of them losing their wives. “Whoever asks for permission to go home, that person is instantly dismissed and told never to come back,” the workers complained. And Derick Chailusa who spoke on behalf of other workers said the workers were being threatened with dismissals whenever they complain to management over the matter. He said because of the decision by the company not to allow workers to see their families, many workers have lost their marriages. "Because of this many families have been destroyed because our women we left home have since remarried and some have been impregnated by our neighbors,” he said. He said since the outbreak of the COVID 19 last year, Zambian workers at the company are not allowed to step out of the construction site
but on the other hand their Chinese counterparts are allowed to do so without any restriction. Mr Chailusa said it was not fair for the company to allow only Chinese expatriates to leave the construction site while Zambians are forced to remain in their dormitories after work.
“Government should help us by compelling management to stop refusing us permission to go home to see our families. Since the outbreak of the COVID 19 last year, none of us is allowed to go home or to receive visitors,” “Government should help us by compelling management to stop refusing us permission to go home to see our families. ment has been reversed, as those on lease were done way back. In an interview with Daily Nation, Mr Sampa said there was no record of any council property that has been sold, but just put on lease. Mr Sampa however explained that the leased properties were also helping the council to generate revenue to pay workers and to pay for collection of garbage in the city. The mayor said despite the directive from the Central Government that all local authorities across country should not sale or put any property on lease, LCC has no record of having sold any property, but just on lease.
Mr Sampa disclosed that Lusaka Barcelona Academy sports grounds, Kuku sports pitch among other properties were on lease and were functioning well. He explained that the council has also continued collecting revenue from other businesses like licenses, dog licensing and land licensing. “Look at Kuku grounds that facility is on lease and in a case where the person in charge of the property does not adhere to the terms of contract, it can be reposed and had we not leased out they would have been no development in Kuku. Olympic swimming pool is also on lease, therefore it’s perfectly normal,” he said.
President Lungu gets PF adoption certificate
By SIMON MUNTEMBA PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu was yesterday issued with the adoption certificate by the Patriotic Front as the party official Presidential Candidate in the August 12 general elections. He was handed the adoption certificate at Lusaka’s Mulungushi International Conference Centre amid jubilation from party members who attended the event. Speaking during the handover of the certificate, PF Secretary General, Davies Mwila said as an elected party President, Mr Lungu was automatically the presidential candidate for the forthcoming elections as per PF constitution. “The party constitution states that the President of the party shall be elected at the general conference. The same constitution goes further that whoever shall be elected as party President shall automatically be the candidate of the party,” Mr Mwila said. Mr Mwila and PF national chairperson Samuel Mukupa signed the adoption certificate before handing it to President Lungu who also signed. Vice President Inonge Wina and PF Members of the Central Committee (MCC) were in attendance to witness the handing over of the adoption certificate for their preferred Presidential candidate.

Increase in Covid-19 hospitalization worrying - MOH Minister of Health Jonas Chanda says despite a reduction in the number of new COVID- 19 cases, Zambia has continued to observe a stagnation in the number of cases requiring hospitalisation, with a slight increase in admissions and critical cases noted in the past few days. Dr. Chanda says the development is a reminder of the fact that community transmission is still ongoing and people remain at risk of contracting the disease. In a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday, the Minister encouraged health workers to maintain a high index of suspicion even in spite of the reduced numbers of cases being recorded in order to timely isolate and treat cases while ensuring that the chains of transmission are broken. And Dr. Chanda indicated that as the Ministry continues with setting up of community vaccination sites, 236 vaccination site across the country have been set up with a target of setting up at least 50 more sites. “As part of the COVID-19 vaccination programme, we have also continued to closely monitor any reports
of adverse effects following immunization through the Zambia Medical Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA),” the Minister stated. Meanwhile, Dr. Chanda announced that in the last 24hrs, 7,266 doses were administered bringing the cumulative number of vaccinated persons to 39, 300. He added that 84 new confirmed cases were recorded out of 6,500 tests conducted bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 91, 670. “On an encouraging note, no new deaths were recorded in the last 24hrs. The cumulative number of COVDI-19 related deaths stands at 1,251 classified as 703 COVID deaths and 548 COVID-19 associated deaths,” he said. Dr. Chanda noted that a total of 79 discharges were recorded from both the COVID-19 isolated facilities and home management bringing the cumulative number of total recoveries to 90, 012. He added that there are currently 407 active cases of whom 356 are under community management and 51 are admitted to COVID-19 facilities while 37 are on oxygen therapy and 11 in critical condition. - ZANIS
Review mining taxation, govt urged PARTY of National Unity and Progress President Highvie Hamududu has urged government to review mining taxation to have in place a simplified mineral royalty in order to unlock the potential of mining. Mr Hamududu said this was the resolution following the mining indaba which ended yesterday and emphasized that mining holds the bigger key for macro-economic stability. Mr Hamududu said there are investors ready to invest in the country if the mining indaba only came up with such a resolution which would change the narrative on the country’s economy. Mr Hamududu says the PNUP has been a proponent of an economic recovery plan where the game changer is mining which can contribute to the stabilization of the exchange rate for prices of goods and services to come down. He says the immediate action government can take to achieve this is to put in place measures to attract investments and production in the mines. – MILLENNIUM RADIO

Fruits of economic diplomacy through decongestion projects Dear editor, AFTER his election as transition President to complete the residue of unfinished tenure of President Sata, President Lungu has brought about some reforms towards foreign policy. His Government has embarked on what was known as "economic diplomacy" which basically meant that international relations was to be used as the means tor mutual economic benefits. Partnerships were to be established between Zambia and its allies and how ripple effect can benefit the Zambian citizens. The Lusaka decongestion project is among the projects that were initiated out of economic diplomacy. Within the last 1 year, President Lungu has commissioned 4 fly over bridges which have been constructed through a joint venture with the Indian Government. The recent addition is the Long Acres fly over bridge which has not only added beauty to the city but will foster a number of economic opportunities. President Edgar Chagwa Lungu does not want to leave anything to chance, his resounding resolution is to ensure that every vow he made on the podium in the run up to the previous elections became a reality. This is at the height of when he is required to give attention to the winding up of affairs of cabinet and Parliament whose automatic dissolution is expected in less than two weeks time. Ahead of the historical modernization of Lusaka, with all the reservoir of average intellect imbued in us, we took up it ourselves to interrogate the notable benefits of this mammoth PF signature project which is an access route to and from the central business district. We have emphasized the economic benefits arising from decongestion projects and we will do so to remind those who might have forgotten. The four fly over bridges which sits in the heart of Lusaka are not an ordinary monuments, but are a symbol of a catalysts that will aid the various human aspects. To mention but a few; the Makeni, Arcades, Munali and now
the Long Acres fly over bridges will stimulate the various human activity and it will among other things lead to; - Reduction of road traffic accidents: - lessen fuel consumption; - save the time that is spent on the road to access town; - promote local tourism as they will stimulate travelling. - job creation owing to the skills which have been acquired by local contractors who participated in the construction of this facility. - modernize Lusaka city. -promote Foreign Direct Investment as this will reduce the cost of doing business. -make Lusaka accessible during rainy season. - increase productivity. We therefore wish to thank the PF for improving our quality and standard of living through the ambitious infrastructure developmental projects. We also acknowledge the role that was played by the Indian Government in ensuring this project came to pass. This is evident that President Lungu's Administration is winning trust owing to their exemplary and unmatched prudent and accountable financial Management. With the campaign promises which have been fulfilled, we should collectively unite and ensure that we renew President Lungu's mandate for another five years. To the opposition politicians, the unprecedented economic activities of this nature are depleting your campaign messages. There is no politician who will put cogent arguments to convince Zambians that they are going to build roads. When they take their usual muddling, we understand their pain. This is why some rational and discerning minds are defecting to the ruling party. We can only assure them that in the boat, there are so many seats. In conclusion, we warmly acknowledge and congratulate President Lungu and the PF for giving us Lusaka fly over road, the promise fulfilled. These represents collective efforts of Economic diplomacy under the tenure of President Lungu. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI Lusaka

one to tertiary levels locally and abroad which has been regarded as both remarkable and unbeatable record ever seen to have recorded in the national walls of this particular country. KK built schools, managed corporations and run the local economy with resources tapped from our domestic GDP and built infrastructures which today are still truly standing strong as a great testimony to his dear dedication as a patriotic agent of socio-economic development. Today, we celebrate this outstanding personality and humanistic icon's birthday which falls each year on the 28th of April, KK deserves to have an iconic structure as a way of remembering this

Pupils should spend the school holiday responsibly Dear editor, THE government schools closed and the private schools are yet to close. The closure of schools marks the end of the first term. There is excitement among the pupils which comes with the closure of schools. However, closing of schools is one thing and spending the holiday responsibly is another. In view of the aforementioned, I implore the pupils in the examination classes to desist from indulging in vices such as illicit sex, alcohol abuse and drug abuse among others. The pupils in the examination classes should spend the holiday responsibly by studying hard ahead of the Grade Nine examinations and Grade Twelve examinations. This will
assist them to catch up with some topics they didn't understand very well during the course of learning before the first term ended. The pupils in the examination classes can also register with some tuition centres like the Great North Road Academy for instance. Great North Road Academy offers private tuition at a fee during the holidays. These private tuition are offered pupils from Great North Road Academy to pupils from other schools. The tuitions are aimed at preparing the pupils for the examinations and also on the topics that the pupils don't understand. The advantage of pupils preparing adequately for the final examinations is that it instills confidence in the pupils before
Respect for Dr. David Kenneth Buchizya Kaunda, our former outstanding national character! Dear editor, I might have less privileged information since I was a little boy by then when we were ruled by super Ken, but the stories abound everywhere and it is written in many documents that have spoken out on many things about Dr. Kaunda. Of course, KK may not be the likings to many during his rule as he was on one sides of the coin known as super human in some of the socialist concepts that he had embraced in his economic blueprints right in his national fabric systems of rulership. One of the many successful stories that we have heard from time to time and time again, is that his regime educated many Zambians right from grade

writing the examinations. Ultimately, the pupils in the examination classes will not engage in the examination malpractice commonly known as examination leakage. It has been said that education is the best equaliser. On this score, it is imperative that pupils should use every opportunity at their disposal to realise their dreams by pursuing careers of their own choice. My free and timely advice to the pupils in the examination classes is that they should use the school holiday well by studying hard as they prepare for the forthcoming examinations. These pupils should also work very hard at school during the course of learning. ELEMIYA PHIRI Lusaka.
Kwacha stabilizes on thin policy space! Dear editor, GOING by the present-day scenarios over the attitude for the Kwacha, it will still rest in the indicators and advances which can only be taken from the supply side of the Forex market. Going by the current sustained outlook and forward-looking dollarization seen on the mining receipts, and amid slow-paced IMF deal/external debt reformation and remodel discussions, we do not anticipate any substantial development on the bailout any time soon as far as tight supply situations are keenly apprehensive. Assumed that the Bank of Zambia (central bank) is now restrictive on the glassy of supply provision on the continued deteriorating of FX reserves (adding to the negative Kwacha liquidity weight in the deficiency of a sterilization process), we do not see any immediate relief that can take easi-
ly shape on part of the domestic currency. The topical rate hike is already proven to be impotent aspect in cause positive effect and has materially made an improvement within the forex market as it has helped to balancing the models though not very impressive rate from macroeconomic factors as the bears are more likely to receive a lift from improving business conditions (as we are now seeing such a relatively distinguished story around the month of March), had an upshot that can model to motivate many Zambian firms to deepen onto their import activities. On a positive side, genuinely on the carefree thoughts of the August polls, the Kwacha can see a quick reversal because only then can Zambia secure an IMF deal while also successfully restructuring her external debt portfolio. Afghan retreat: US starts withdrawing from its longest war THE United States formally began withdrawing its last troops from Afghanistan on Saturday, bringing its longest war nearer to an end but also heralding an uncertain future for a country in the tightening grip of an emboldened Taliban. US officials on the ground said the withdrawal is a work in progress – and May 1 is just a continuation – but Washington has made an issue of the date because it is a deadline agreed with the Taliban in 2020 to complete the pullout. The skies above Kabul and nearby Bagram airbase were buzzing with more US helicopter activity than usual as the withdrawal geared up, following the start on Thursday of a concurrent NATO drawdown. Afghan security forces were on high alert on Saturday for any possible attacks on retreating American troops. “The Americans will formally begin their withdrawal from Afghanistan starting May 1 and the Taliban might increase the violence,” Acting Interior Minister Hayatullah Hayat told top police commanders, according to an audio clip given to reporters. Taliban attacks? Afghan National Security Council adviser Hamdullah Mohib said the Taliban “may choose war” in an attempt to grab power after US troops fully exit, but security forces were ready to face the fighters. The prospect of an end to the US presence after 20 years comes despite fighting raging across the countryside in the absence of a peace deal. ALJAZEERA

Biden administration to restrict travel from India starting Tuesday
T
HE Biden administration has confirmed that the US will restrict travel from India starting on Tuesday in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and variants being observed in the country. "On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Administration will restrict travel from India starting immediately," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday. "The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India. The policy will take effect on Tuesday, May 4." The administration will issue a 212(f) order restricting entry into the US for foreign nationals who have been in India within the previous 14 days, a source familiar with the move said. Airlines have been told of the decision, a source said. The new policy will take effect on Tuesday at 12:01 am ET. The policy will not apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents or other people with exemptions. As with all international travel-

Biden administration takes office. Before boarding Air Force Two on a tarmac in Kentucky on Friday afternoon, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the travel restrictions. Harris is the first Black and South Asian Vice President, with family members still living in Delhi, India. "It is important to note, as I said earlier, that we have a responsibility as the United States in particular, as it relates to the people that we have partnered with over the years, to step up when people are in a time of need," Harris continued. Tunisia to seek $4bn loan from IMF, PM says Tunisian prime minister says loan constitutes ‘last opportunity’ to save the cash-strapped country’s economy.

TUNISIA will seek a $4bn loan programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in talks starting next week, Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi told Reuters news agency, saying politicians faced a “last opportunity” to save the economy. Mechichi said on Friday he expected talks to last about two months and had “confidence” Tunisia could secure financial support to help it through an eco-
nomic crisis that has been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. “All efforts must be unified in Tunisia because we consider that we have reached the last opportunity and we must use it to save the economy,” he said in an interview. He said he wanted a three-year loan programme and added that details of an agreement with powerful labour unions, seen as vital to unlock foreign funding,
were still being finalised. He said Tunisia would rationalise rather than cut subsidies and said it was considering sales of minority stock it holds in some businesses in order to finance investment in the most important publicly owned companies. The IMF has previously said Tunisia should target urgent reforms of state-owned enterprises, subsidies and the large public sector wage bill.
Somali lawmakers vote for country to hold indirect elections SOMALIA’S lower house of parliament has voted unanimously to restore an agreement reached last year that will allow the country to hold indirect elections. Last month, the parliament had voted to extend President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s term by two years and for the country to hold its future polls under a one-person-one-vote system. The move, however, was rejected by the senate, prime minister, opposition leaders and four of the country’s six federal member states, leading to a standoff in the capi-

tal, Mogadishu. On Saturday, Speaker Mohamed Mursal said 140 MPs had voted to reinstate indirect polls based on the September 2020 agreement, with no lawmakers expressing any objection. In an address to parliament shortly before the vote, Mohamed, who is popularly known as Farmaajo, called on lawmakers to back the return to the agreement. He also said he had directed Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to “spearhead the process of preparations and the implementation of the electoral process includ-
ing key election security arrangements to ensure elections take in a peaceful and stable atmosphere”. “I also ask the opposition leaders to play their role in pacifying the country and Mogadishu, in particular, for the sake of the people, country and religion,” the president said. Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reporting from Nairobi, Kenya said the move today on part of parliament “is certainly expected to deescalate the tension that we’ve seen recently in Mogadishu”, though major challenges remained. - ALJAZEERA

Nigeria gang leader behind school kidnapping shot by rivals A NOTORIOUS gang leader behind the abduction of more than 300 students in Nigeria in December has been killed by a rival gang, officials say. Auwalu Daudawa was reportedly ambushed while attempting to steal a herd of cattle from an armed group in the north-western state of Zamfara. Daudawa is said to have carried out December's kidnapping in Katsina state. He was given an amnesty as part of a peace deal in February but reportedly returned to his gang earlier this week. Under the terms of February's deal, Daudawa was pardoned in Zamfara state after he said he repented and handed over his weapons to the government. Members of his criminal gang were promised accommodation by state Governor Bello Matawalle, along with assistance to help improve their livelihoods. - BBC

Manchester City close in on title MANCHESTER City could clinch the Premier League title on Sunday after two goals in the space of 83 seconds saw off a stubborn Crystal Palace.
City will secure a third title in four seasons if second-placed Manchester United lose at home to Liverpool. After a scrappy first half at Selhurst Park, Sergio Aguero
thumped City ahead with a clinical finish before Ferran Torres drilled in a low shot. That ended the resistance of Palace, who stay in 13th place. Roy Hodgson's side had chances in the first half through Christian Benteke, who flicked a header wide and had a close-range shot blocked by City keeper Ederson. But once City made their breakthrough when Aguero smashed
high into the net, quickly followed by Torres' precise finish, the result was not in doubt. Now it is a question of when, not if, Pep Guardiola's side will be crowned champions again after relinquishing the crown to Liverpool last season. "We can start to put the champagne in the fridge - not to open yet, but to think about it," said Guardiola, whose side moved 11 points clear of United. - BBC

ESCO United opened a ten points lead at the summit of the MTN Super League after beating regional rivals Indeni 2-0 in a Ndola derby played at Indeni Sports Complex in Ndola. Two late goals from Mwila Phiri and Chitiya Mususu extended Zesco’s winning streak to nine consecutive win as the Ndola outfit propelled to 52 points on the Super League table. Mwila Phili broke the deadlock seven minutes before the final whistle when super sub Chitiya
Mususu thumped one at close range to double the lead five minutes later. The win at Indeni Sports complex completed Zesco United’s double win over Indeni who were edged to a 3-2 defeat when they visited Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on December 12th last year. In the second fixture of the double header at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka, Sensational Zanaco FC reclaimed second spot on the Super League table after stunning Forest Rangers 1-0. Lassa Kiala’s 59th minute strike was all the Bankers needed to dislodge Forest Rangers from
second position after benefiting from Roger Kola’s assist. The win escalated Zanaco to 42 points, ten points behind the runaway league leaders Zesco United who are on 52 points. Earlier, Red Arrows punished Lusaka Dynamos 3-1 to bounce back from two consecutive defeats to Nkwazi and Zesco United. A brace from Francis Simwanza and a lone goal from Sadam Phiri propelled Red Arrows to 36 points. Simwanza handed Red Arrows the lead on the half hour mark before
completing his brace ten minutes before the final whistle. Willy Stephanus pulled 1 goal back for Lusaka dynamos in injury time before Sadam Phiri made the game beyond reach for the ABSA Cup Champions who recorded their sixth defeat of the season. In other Super League games, Ian Bakala collected his first win as Kabwe Warriors head coach after guiding his charges to a 2-0 win over Lumwana Radiants thanks to first and second half goals from Prince Mumba and Akakulubelwa Mwachiyaba. At Arthur Davis Stadi-
um, Nkwazi held Power Dynamos to a goalless draw while Buildcon denied struggling Kitwe United from getting their second win of the season as the two sides shared the spoils following a 1-1 stalemate. Prison Leopards and Young Green Eagles were also involved in a goalless draw at President Stadium in Kabwe. Today’s Super League action will see Green Eegles taking on struggling Nkana FC at Independence Stadium in Choma while Green Buffaloes will host NAPSA Stars in a Lusaka Derby at Nkoloma Stadium.
Numba noted the need for government to have more regard for the heroes not only on 28 April. He further noted that since the heroes stadia is named after their fathers , the families should be allocated a wing where the moneys collected could be shared amongst 30 families equally. He says that Godfrey Chitalu stadium should also include the Chitalu family and should allocate an allowance for the brand. Numba says most of them were very young when the Gabon accident happened and that their fathers were bread winners and all families lost out. As a result, some children have been living from hand to mouth. He has also appealed to the government to empower their foundation that was created last year for the children to help keep the legacies of their fathers. ‘’An appeal to the government to have more regard for the heroes not only when it’s 28 April. Since the heroes stadia is named after our fathers lets us be allocated a wing where the money collected can be shared amongst 30 families equally. “Equally Godfrey Chitalu stadium should also include the Chitalu family and should allocate an allowance for the brand because most of us were very young when the Garbon happened and our fathers were breadwinners,’’ Mwila Junior said He appealed to Government to help the families by at least employing one person from each family in government. “If the government can help empower our foundation that was created last year for us the children to help keep the legacies of our fathers. In this light we may be able to have a room at heroes stadium like a museum with photos of all our fathers to be accessed at a fee,’’ he said. Zambia on Wednesday commemorated 28 years since the Gabon disaster of the coast of Libreville.

DRINKING FROM THE DEAD F
. . . body found in well six days later
OUR Hopley families were left traumatised on Tuesday after discovering that they had been drinking water from a well that had a dead human being for six days.
The families continued to drink water from the well without realising it contained the body of 33-year-old Bowen Mutori who had disappeared for six days. When the stench became too strong, a decision was then made to empty the well. Police retrieved the body on Tuesday and took it to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident saying police were treating the case as murder and appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Chikomborero Chiwona ( 39), who discovered the body floating in her well, told H-Metro that four families had been drawing water for use without realising there was a body in the well. “We tried to empty the well because of the stench from the well but nothing was found on only to discover the body floating the following day. She added that, as per tradition, they had taken one of their blankets to wrap the body accompanied by a prayer that the deceased’s spirit fights the “murderers”.
Insp Chazovachii said information at hand indicated that the deceased went to his home and some people came looking for him in a car leading to his disappearance only to be found dead after six days. “At around 2100 hours, it was reported that he saw an unknown vehicle passing by the road outside his house and told his wife that the motorist was looking for him. “He was reported to have put on his shoes and went away only to be found dead six days later. His body was found floating in a well at a house in their neighbourhood. “The owner of the house where the body was found is reported to have been drawing water from the well unknowingly, forcing them to try and empty the well after an unpleasant smell came from it. - NEHANDARADIO
Binga man kills uncle over ‘lean’ cow A 57-YEAR-OLD Binga man has been arrested after he fatally axed his uncle, who tried to stop him from selling a cow that was “old and lean”.
Dangling-handcuffsWilliam Sibanga Muzamba of Twakachibona village under Chief Pashu reportedly surrendered himself to the police soon after killing his uncle Simati Mefias Mudimba (62) from the same area on Saturday. The two had been drinking traditional beer at Mr Fanson Muleya (53)’s homestead when they argued over a cow, which Muzamba wanted to sell. Mudimba allegedly drew an axe and threatened to strike his nephew who disarmed him and struck him twice on the head. Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the
murder and arrest of Muzamba who is expected to appear in court soon. “We received a report of a man who was murdered by his nephew following a misunderstanding over sale of a beast,” he said. “On 24 April around 5pm William Sibanga Muzamba and Simati Mefias Mudimba were drinking traditional beer at the informant, Mr Fanson Muleya’s homestead. “Muzamba was discussing selling his beast with his uncle Mudimba who told him not to sell it and suggested that it be slaughtered because it was old and had lost weight.” Insp Banda said this did not go down well with Muzamba, leading to an argument which degenerated into a misunderstanding. Mudimba allegedly rained insults on Muzamba before pulling out a small axe from his trousers and threatened to kill his nephew. Police said
Muzamba grabbed the axe from his uncle before striking him twice on the head and he died on the spot. Other villagers who were at the homestead drinking beer fled from the scene. Mr Muleya rushed to Pashu police base and re-
ported a case of murder, while Muzamba later went to the same police base and surrendered himself. Police attended the scene and took the body to St Patrick’s Hospital in Hwange for a post-mortem. - THE HERALD
Married women fight over ‘hubby’
. . .’She lured my husband with money she received from her hubby’ A MARRIED Zimbabwean student studying in South Africa is at loggerheads with her compatriot over alleged husband snatching.
Brenna Hove Madzungwe (39), a DJ who is legally married to Morgan Madzungwe, recently clashed with Blessmore Charumare (28) for allegedly snatching Blessmore’s husband Tatenda Adam Mbabvu (33). Brenna confirmed clashing with Blessmore and cohabiting with Mbabvu, adding that the news had
reached her husband Madzungwe. In photographs posted on Brenna’s social media account, she is seen kissing Mbabvu and posing for photographs in different locations. “Blessmore learnt of my relationship with Mbabvu on my Facebook page and quickly exposed me to my husband by sending the photographs to him. “She came to my place accompanied by her friend and I do not know how she came to know my place. “She claimed that she was
pregnant and Mbabvu had dumped her, but I doubt if she is truly pregnant. “I confronted Mbabvu over his affair with Blessmore since I have been dating him for the past three years and he described her as his mistress he enjoyed unprotected sex with during the time I returned home to my family. “Irked by Mbabvu’s decision to dump her, Blessmore exposed my photographs with Mbabvu to my husband. “My husband shocked me when he sent messages addressing me in Mbabvu’s
name and the issue even reached my mother-in-law. “My mother-in-law phoned me enquiring about the new husband as well, and I saw it best to live with Mbabvu. “I am legally married to Madzungwe and blessed with three children. The first born is 20-years-old and Mbabvu has two kids. I do not see myself returning to Madzungwe anymore following this and Mbabvu has since started introducing me to his relatives,” said Brenna. Woman drowns baby in boiling water THE trial of a 29-year-old Zimbabwean woman who is accused of drowning her newly-born baby girl in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water in South Africa has been set for May 14 at the Brits Magistrates Court in Gauteng province.
Rape victim file pictureWendy Tapiwa Chipo of Rietfonten who is facing murder charges was remanded to May 14. National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) spokesperson for North Gauteng, Ms Lumka Mahanjana said offence was committed on March 16. She said prior to the infanticide, the woman had allegedly tried to abort the pregnancy without success. “It is alleged that Chipo tried to abort her baby, when that failed and the baby came out alive, she dipped her in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water,” said Ms Mahanjana.
“She then put the body into a plastic bag. Together with her friend, they went to bury the baby at a nearby bush”. Ms Mahanjana said the cat was let out of the bag on March 17, when the friend who could no longer keep the secret reported the matter to the police. She also took the police to the shallow grave they had buried the baby and her remains were recovered. “Chipo was arrested a day later while on the run to Pretoria,” said Ms Mahanjana. Last year a 42-year-old mentally challenged Zimbabwean woman killed her six-year-old daughter in Kwazulu Natal. In 2019, a 30-year-old Zimbabwean woman was left grieving when her newborn baby fell to his death at Mamelodi Hospital, east of Pretoria, after nurses allegedly refused to help her when she gave birth while standing. - NEHANDARADIO

Jason Statham eyes ‘Fast & Furious’ return for last two movies JASON Statham wants to return to the role of Deckard Shaw in the final two films of the “Fast & Furious” franchise. The 53-year-old actor has played Deckard Shaw in three movies in the series as well as the spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw” and, while he won’t be appearing in “F9”, he is keen to work with director Justin Lin before the franchise comes to end after 11 films. Jason told Collider: “I’d love to come back for those couple of movies. It’s thin ice that I’m skating on if I talk about what’s going to happen in the next movies. “But I know Justin Lin, I know him really well, and it was funny, when I came on to do the cameo in 6, he never turned up to 7 and 8, and they’re the ones that I did, so we’re destined to do some-
thing bigger.” The “Snatch”’ star continued: “It’s great to work with Vin Diesel and all the other characters, I’ve made some great friends on that movie, and I really love the film franchise itself. I think it’s a global success for all the right reasons. “To be a part of it is just a great privilege. So if they want me in the next ones, I’ll be there.” Meanwhile, Jason is set to reprise his role as rescue diver Jonas Taylor in the sequel to the shark thriller ‘The Meg’ and revealed that filming will begin next year. He said: “We’re gonna start shooting in January, if I get my dates right. Ben Wheatley is the director, I’m very excited to work with him. I’m thrilled to get going, it’s been a while. - IOL

ORLD Pangolin Day falls on the third Saturday of February each year. In view of the devastation caused by Covid-19, which is reported to have spread through abuse of pangolins by humans in China, this year’s commemoration, the TENTH annual celebration (which happened yesterday), gives us the opportunity to consider how threats that result from the improper handling of pangolins far outweigh their supposed mythical benefits, and how we can make better choices in future to avoid pandemics.
To begin with, there are eight species of pangolins, four are found in Asia while the other four are found in Africa. All species face declining populations because of illegal trade, which has seen Asian pangolins being listed as critically endangered and African pangolins listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Last year pangolins were infamously reported as the animal that potentially passed the SARS-CoV-2, the novel virus that causes COVID-19, to humans. Chinese scientists arrived at this conclusion due to the presence of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses in Malayan pangolins. Pangolins are being poached to near extinction due to a high demand for their scales, meat and other body parts in China and Vietnam, where many people falsely believe that pangolin scales can be used to cure various diseases. This myth has been debunked by science, since pangolin scales are made of keratin, the same protein found in human nails and hair. Therefore, if pangolin scales have power to cure diseases, biting your fingernails should be just as potent. Moreover, the everincreasing number of people who are being infected with Covid-19 and those who are succumbing to it shows that the threats associated with the improper handling of wildlife are very real and often unforgiving. So far, COVID-19 has killed more than 2.4 million people and infected more than 110 million people in every part of the world.
REFLECTIONS FOR WORLD PANGOLIN DAY
Pangolin meat is also in high demand in Asia, where it is considered a delicacy. This is not unlike the high demand for illegal bushmeat here in Zambia. There have been many pandemics that are a direct result of consuming illegal wildlife meat, which scientists have long warned is dangerous, as it often carries unknown diseases. While previous warnings have somewhat fallen on deaf ears, we can’t afford to ignore the warning signaled by Covid-19, because if we don’t change how we interact with wildlife, especially regarding consumption of illegal bushmeat, worse pandemics are certainly coming. The high demand for pangolins is also motivated by economic reasons. Some Zambians have unfortunately been encouraged to engage in the illegal poaching and trafficking of pangolins, risking their freedom and aiding in robbing the country of its wildlife resource. While poaching may be lucrative for a small number of criminals, when things fall apart, it’s the entire world that pays for it. For instance, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates the Covid-19 pandemic will cost the global economy $28 trillion in lost output by 2025. Further, the World Bank
estimates 150 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty by 2021. Another very real threat associated with poaching and trafficking pangolins is the possibility of being jailed and separated from one’s family for a very long time. Under the Zambia Wildlife Act No.14 of 2015, illegal possession of pangolins or their scales is punishable with a minimum prison sentence of five years without the option of paying a fine. So, for Zambians who think they can make quick money by poaching pangolins, the only payment they will receive is prison time. As we celebrate pangolins, one of the most unique creatures on the planet, there are several things we need to keep in mind. Pangolins belong in the wild, their natural habitat. We can restore the delicate balance between humans and nature by being mindful of the fact that how we interact with pangolins and other wildlife has serious implications on our health and on the health of the planet. You can protect pangolins by reporting any suspicious wildlife or pangolin activities to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Write to: info@wildlifecrimeprevention.org

H IT W IT F G IN P E E K Y H W HIIT REALLY DOES WORK I
F you love low-volume HighIntensity Interval Training (HIIT) or trying to love this form of exercise, you may just have another reason to commit to it regularly. A new review paper published in The Journal of Physiology collates a decade’s worth of research on the topic of this so-called low-volume high HIIT for health. The current World Health Organisation (WHO) physical activity guidelines 150-300 min of moderate activity/week or 75-100min of vigorous activity/week. It may be unattainable for a large portion of the population who are time poor due to family or work commitments. This hypothesis is supported by the increasing rates of physical inactivity amongst adults in high income countries. The findings of this study show that low-volume HIIT (typically involving less than ~20 mins total exercise time - inclusive of warm up and cool down) yields comparable improvements to interventions meeting the current guidelines despite requiring significantly less time. So, what is low-volume HIIT? As HIIT involves active periods of work interspersed with recovery periods, the researchers defined
low-volume HIIT as interventions which included less than 15 minutes of high intensity exercise per session (not including recovery periods). This review builds on the authors’ recent study published in Diabetes Care which showed that as little as 4-min of HIIT 3 times per week for 12 weeks significantly improved blood sugar levels, fat in the liver, and cardio respiratory fitness in adults with type 2 diabetes. They also showed that these improvements were comparable to an intervention involving 45-min of moderate intensity aerobic exercise. Dr Angelo Sabag, corresponding author of the study said: “While the WHO guidelines may serve their purpose at a populational level, individualised and tailored low-volume HIIT interventions delivered by appropriately trained exercise professionals may be more effective at an individual level, especially for time-poor individuals. This research is especially important now as people are looking for new and exciting ways to engage in regular exercise, after a year of lower physical activity due to the pandemic.” Nombulelo Mgabadeli, a certi-

Mwoyo wakamira izvezvi. Shuviro yangu ndeyekuti mhandu dzakaita izvi dzibatwe nekuti hatingacherere mugodhi kuti rigova guva remunhu. “We used to fetch water for drinking and watering our garden, but we are now forced to look for alternative sources of water,” she said.
