MINE UNION SPURNS VEDANTA’S SLY OVERTURES

appeared in the Mast Newspaper of March 4, 2021. In this article, it was stated that Vedanta seeks to have an engagement with NUMAW leadership to discuss matters relating to Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) plc. “NUMAW would like to dismiss this report with the contempt it deserves,” Mr Chansa stressed. He said no sane person would love to bring back Vedanta to KCM and added that NUMAW took great exception to the Indian investor’s calculated divide and rule tricks. “NUMAW and our colleagues in the union circles had highlighted Vedanta’s failures to authorities for many years until Government decided to divorce with the company by placing KCM under liquidation,” he said. Mr Chansa added: “NUMAW is convinced that
there is nothing new that Vedanta can offer and their promise to invest US$1.5 billion in KCM is mere illusions and acts of trickery.” He said NUMAW was in solidarity with the government, KCM workers, communities where KCM operates, the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) and the United Mineworkers Union of Zambia (UMUZ) on the issue of Vedanta losing its social licence to operate in Zambia. Mr Chansa said Vedanta must realise that the NUMAW leadership had integrity and could not sink low to engage in any discussions with a company that peddled lies for many years and mistreated KCM workers. “NUMAW urges all its members and partners to dismiss Vedanta’s reported assertions in the Mast newspaper as mere wishful thinking, and an attempt to undermine the

NUMAW president James Chansa said yesterday that reports of a potential meeting with Vedanta must be ignored and treated with the contempt it deserved. Chimese trial drags By CHARLES MUSONDA TRIAL in the case former Zambia Air Force Commander Eric Chimese is charged with possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime has continued to drag after the State failed to prosecute the matter yesterday. The case was scheduled for continued trial before Lusaka Magistrate Nsunge Chanda but deputy Chief State Advocate Gamaliel Zimba, who prosecutes the case, was not in court on grounds that he was reportedly unwell. In the last sitting held in camera, Ms. Chanda rejected the documents that a State witness intended to produce in court concerning Chimese’s earnings when he served as ZAF The matter, which started in early 2019, has dragged on account of adjournments mostly occasioned by the prosecution. In one of the previous sittings, a Ministry of Lands registrar testified that a document that purports to show that Chimese owns houses in question in Ibex Hill is a forged one. Ms Rachael Tembo, 30, told the court that Drug Enforcement Commission
Mr Chimese (DEC) officers approached and asked her to provide them with information relating to certain properties; and gave her a copy of a certificate of title bearing property number L488 for the houses in contention. Ms. Tembo said when she checked the property number in the ministry’s system she discovered that the property does not exist and noticed other anomalies on the copy of the title. She said the font size used to type the title was smaller than the one the ministry usually uses and that the name of the title holder Eric Mwaba Chimese was not in bold letters. She said the property number was supposed to end with M but it did not. “It should have read L/488/M. I came to a conclusion that that this copy of the title is not an original document because the property number and the certificate of title do not exist in our system. The title is a forged document,” Ms. Tembo said.
integrity of NUMAW and has the hallmark of attempting to create divisions within the labour movement in Zambia. “We are in full support of measures taken by the Provisional Liquidator to restructure KCM into two entities because this is the only way that will bring growth and prosperity for the company,” Mr Chansa said.
Mr Chansa reasons why medical products were expiring in a facility like this, there are times when they are over-procured, there are times when regiments change and therefore expiries will happen. “Sometimes there is a mismatch from the information we get from the facilities and what they need so you have a product like this that expires and yet it’s needed. So what we do from our side, we try to reach out to facilities even for products that are about to expire, but we can only go that far,” Mr Kazuma said.

Siwale claimed that the real Edgar Lungu is dead and that the Head of State’s real name is Jonathan Mutaware, adding that he has three national registration cards with different details. There was a fierce exchange of questions and answers between the arresting officer Edward Mambwe, who testified as the last prosecution witness, and defence lawyer Keith Mweemba during cross examination. An emotional atmosphere hung in the courtroom as Mr. Mweemba insisted that Mr. Mambwe should answer the questions as he put them to him while the witness told Mr. Mweemba that he was talking too much when he wanted him to answer questions he said he had already answered. constantly intervene in the bitter exchange between the two. Earlier in his evidence in chief, Mr. Mambwe, a superintendent based at police headquarters, told the court how he led a team of investigators into the matter after a Mr. Dama Banda, who grew up with President Lungu and went together to Mukuba Secondary School in Kitwe, complained against Siwale following his defamatory remarks on Muvi TV’s assignment programme. He said his investigations included interviews with Muvi TV management and staff, other interviews at University of Zambia where President Lungu studied law, and a search at Siwale’s home where they seized several documents including voter registers for John Howard under Chawama constituency and a copy of President Lungu’s NRC. He said he went as far as Kitwe where he interviewed the head teacher at Mukuba Secondary School, other teachers including the retired one who taught President Lungu at Ishuko Primary School in Chimwemwe Township, and State Counsel William Nyirenda, President Lungu’s former school mate. Mr. Mambwe said he arrested Siwale when he failed to give a clear and satisfactory answer after a warn and caution in which he denied the charge. Trial continues on March 31, 2021.

Schoolgirl, mum face High Court over abortion By CHARLES MUSONDA
A LUSAKA girl and her mother have been told that they will be tried by the High Court over a case of abortion. In this case, the girl aged 17 and a Grade 11 pupil of Twin Palm Secondary School, is charged with her mother, Elizabeth Chinyama, 34, for abortion. It is alleged that the girl aborted her pregnancy, which was between six and eight months after Chinyama gave her some noxious stuff to terminate the pregnancy. It is also alleged that after the abortion, the accused persons, both of Kalingalinga compound, put the foetus in a small bucket but it died as the bucket had blood and water. In the first count, particulars of the offence are that the girl, being with
a child and with intent to procure her own miscarriage, unlawfully administered to herself a noxious stuff on December 31, 2020, contrary to Section 152 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. In the second count, particulars of the offence are that on the same date Chinyama procured for her daughter a noxious thing, knowing that it was intended to be unlawfully used to procure the miscarriage of a child. The two yesterday appeared for mention before Lusaka Magistrate Nsunge Chanda who explained the charge to them, saying the offence they are facing is only tried by the High Court and that they will wait for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions for committal to the High Court. The girl’s grandmother Katoshi
Chinyama, who stood for her as her guardian, told the court that Chinyama is her niece and a divorcee with three children. Ms. Chinyama said the girl before court is the second child of the number two accused person. Asked by Magistrate Chanda when she had her first child, Chinyama said she gave birth to her first child when she was between 13 and 14 years old. Ms. Chanda then told Chinyama that if she started having children at an early age, she should not be surprised if her children start doing the same because they are just following her in her footsteps. The case comes up on March 17, 2021 for another mention and possible committal to the High Court; and the accused persons’ police bond has been extended.

KAMBWILI HATEMBOS UNDER TOTAL BLOCKED CAPTIVITY - NAWAKWI From Page 1
NDC suspended secretary-general Bridget Atanga has again sued Mr Kambwili in the Lusaka High Court, barely two days after filing a notice of withdrawal in a matter in the same court where she wanted it to stop the former Roan Member of Parliament from masquerading as party president. In the new matter filed on Wednesday, Ms Atanga is seeking among other claims that the gathering held by Mr Kambwili on February 27, this year is null and void. Ms Atanga wants the court to declare the resolutions made at the said gathering in which she and two other officials were suspended, be declared null and void as they were made in the absence of any party constitutional provisions. She also wants a declaration that Mr Kambwili having been expelled from the party, has no mandate to transact any business of NDC. She is also seeking an order of interim injunction restraining Mr Kambwili or his agents conducting any party business, costs of and incidental to the action. In an affidavit in support of ex parte summons for an order of interim injunction, Ms Atanga stated that NDC was registered with the Registrar of Societies on September 17, 2017 and around the same time lodged the party constitution. She said that in terms of article 34 of the constitution, the said constitution would only commence, take effect or become operational immediately upon its adoption by NDC party congress made up of about 10, 000 delegates. Ms Atanga said to date, the party has never held any congress and the constitution has never commenced, taken effect to become operational. She said the party has no constitution. “That on 24th of Feb-

ruary 2021, the defendant (Mr Kambwili), in the presence of the vice president of the party Mr Rikki Joseph Akafumba and other senior members of the party, informed me that the defendant should be counted out of the decision making processes of the party and the defendant thereby ceased to hold his temporary position as interim president of NDC,” she stated. Ms Atanga said that Mr Kambwili despite having ceased to be interim party president held a gathering in Luanshya and claimed that the said gathering was a Central Committee meeting of NDC. She said that the said meeting was attended by Luanshya-based sympathisers of Mr Kambwili and lacked the reasonably expected competition of the vice president, national chair person, secretary general and deputy secretary general. “That on 1st of March 2021, two days after his illegal gathering and resolutions, the defendant or his servants or agents attempted to lodge a constitution with the Registrar of Societies in an effort to conceal his illegalities but the Registrar of Societies declined the said lodgment pending determination of other litigation concerning NDC,” Ms Atanga said.

Cyber Security bill passes second reading By NATION REPORTER PARLIAMENT yesterday passed the second reading of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Bill after a heated debate by Members of Parliament both from the opposition and ruling parties on its merits and demerits.
KAGEM Mining Limited and Gemcanton Mining Services Limited made a loss of over US$72 million from the gemstone auctions last year, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa has said. Mr Musukwa said both Kagem Mining Limited and Gemcanton Mining Services Limited only had four gemstone auctions last year generating a revenue of $52.76m.
He said in an interview that in 2019, the two gemstone mining companies had seven auctions generating a revenue of $125.5m. The reduction in auctions, he said, resulted in the loss of $72.74m. Mr Musukwa said: "The reduction in the number of auctions held was due to the Covid-19 restrictions on movements by countries.” "A total of four gemstone auctions were held during the period under review by Kagem and Gemcan-

The Bill is now at the Committee stage where it is being considered line-by-line with changes being made on wording or for new clauses to be added. The Cyber Bill had recently been a subject of debate among the public with some opposition sympathizers calling for its withdrawal from parliament.
The Bill seeks to provide for cyber security, protection of persons against cybercrime and facilitate identification, declaration and protection of critical information infrastructure. Following an electronic voting by MPs, 83 members voted in favour of the Bill while 52 opposed with one abstaining.

The reduction, he said, was due to the suspension of operations at both Kagem and Gemcanton due to Covid-19 pandemic.

"We know that Government is steady and wants to ensure that it does not procure a vaccine that will not be potent with the prevailing variant we have in the country. But they should think of the health workers because they are at higher risk than any other profession," he
said. Dr Sakala stated that the need to have the vaccine for everyone could however not be overemphasized as it was the only way that would save the population. He observed that it was important that Zambians were aware that the only way to win the Covid-19 fight was by having the vaccine in the country considering the increasing numbers.
ZAMBIA, IMF AGREE ROADMAP TOWARDS RECOVERY From Page 1 at the end of last year for IMF support under an Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The virtual mission was held from February 11 to March 3, 2021. The authorities and the IMF agreed on the nature and causes of Zambia’s macroeconomic imbalances, the current state of its public finances and the challenges that need to be addressed to return the country to a sustainable macro-fiscal situation over the medium-term. Dr Ng’andu said the discussions were positive and constructive. He said the exchanges would continue in the next few weeks towards an agreement on a policy package and a path to fiscal and debt sustainability. “Government is committed to secure a programme with the IMF in support of our efforts to strengthen our response to the shocks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure a solid foundation for a prompt and inclusive economic recovery.
“We value the work we have embarked on with the IMF and will pursue our discussions on detailed policy measures to return our economy and public finances to a sustainable trajectory. I am confident that, with the help of the IMF and all of our international partners, we will be able to address our fiscal and economic challenges, return the country to growth and improve the livelihoods of the Zambian people,” Dr Ng’andu said. To stabilise the economy severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Zambia requested a formal IMF programme under the Extended Credit Facility window in November 2020 and launched its Economic Recovery Programme 2020 – 2023 in December 2020. The Ministry of Finance continue its engagement with creditors, and in late January 2021, Zambia requested a debt treatment under the Common Framework agreed by the G20 and Paris Club members, which the ministry hopes will contribute to its goal of restoring Zambia’s public debt sustainability.

CIVILITY A MUST
WITH about five months before the country holds the general elections, politicians must discard toxic language and embrace civility to the hilt. In the past, it has been a trend in the political circles for players in opposite camps to be throwing mud at one another during campaigns, resulting in violence and sometime death. This time around, therefore, politicians in the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and those in the opposition parties must make a paradigm shift in the manner they conduct campaigns and party membership mobilisation. It does not make much sense for a politician to get to the podium solely to throw invectives at political nemesis without any mention of development. Therefore, political players should only expound developmental initiatives that resonate with the majority Zambians. Firstly, leaders across the political divide must appreciate that the cost of living has skyrocketed with February inflation standing at more than 22 percent while the exchange rate is almost K22 to US$1. It is also true that performance in critical sectors of the economy has been below par because of various factors exacerbated by the outbreak of Covid-19, which has continued exerting pressure in the health sector and elsewhere. In particular, the tourism industry has been hardhit because of reduced tourist inflows while exports have also plummeted because of low production and lockdowns in many countries. Since the productive sectors are not performing well, employment opportunities have also been constricted, thus pushing poverty levels upwards. These are the issues the politicians must be unraveling and explaining the way forward with plausible solutions. It is time the politicians and citizens alike raised the bar in politics and public affairs as there has been too much off-target discussions. The sticky issues can only be discussed and resolved in an environment devoid of hate-speech, malice and violence. It is for this reason that all Zambians must only engage in constructive politics to push development forward. In the past, time has been lost on unproductive political quarrels while disagreements have also taken much of the time even on straight forward issues. Therefore, politicians must commit themselves to upholding peace and all tenets of democracy so that, for once, public discourse can proceed without insults. In fact, the Republican Constitution has prescribed how political parties should conduct affairs in a manner that is civilised and all-embracing. Article 60 (2) of the constitution states that a political party shall promote values and principles and also have a national character; promote and uphold national unity. The article further states that political parties shall respect the rights of its members to participate in the affairs of such a political party. Obviously, in so doing, members of the party must express their rights without resorting to diatribe against their opponents. It is important, therefore, for all political players to acquaint themselves with the provisions of their party constitutions and the contents of the Republican Constitution. It is also important to respect the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and all pieces of legislation pertaining to political campaigns and elections. Some politicians have been unjustly attacking the ECZ in an attempt to undermine its integrity; this must be stopped forthwith. They are not in competition with the ECZ but the other political parties.

Covid-9 admissions down – Health minister By KALOBWE BWALYA ZAMBIA has continued to record huge reductions in Covid-19 case admissions to a low of 212 similarly, the country has seen its rate halved daily says Health Minister Dr Jonas Chanda. Dr Chanda said the mortality rate of one in the last 24 hours is the lowest since the onset of the second wave. He has however stressed that this is by no means an indication that people should lower their guard. Speaking during the Covid-19 update in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Chanda commended case management teams for their tireless efforts to ensure that the country reduces the number of deaths from COVID-19. Meanwhile, Dr Chanda said the country has in the last 24 hours recorded 597 new cases out of 7, 418 tests conducted, representing an eight percent positivity rate. He also disclosed that about 3, 080 were Covid-9 active cases across the county, 2, 868 are under community management and 212 are admitted to Covid isolation facilities. Dr Chanda said among those hospitalised, 149 were on oxygen therapy and 36 were in critical condition. Dr Chanda however observed that most people were not observing the health guidelines especially from densely populated areas. He disclosed that the World Bank through the Zambia Covid-19 emergency response and health systems preparedness project has provided over $15 million in financing towards the purchase of ambulances, laboratory equipment, drug, PPEs and medical equipment.

between 1925 and 1974, when the majority of the lead poisoning was caused. The residents have some
of the highest lead levels in the world and health studies in Kabwe have recorded the alarmingly high blood lead levels in children aged five years and younger. Mr Frankental said Anglo American’s failure to act on the toxic legacy does not reflect the true role of Anglo American in Kabwe’s public health disaster. He said "alleviating the ongoing suffering of Kabwe’s children, and its future generations, requires Anglo American’s leadership and engagement, not its evasion and obstruction.”
POLITICIANS MUST SIGN NO-VIOLENCE PACT - VJ By AARON CHIYANZO POLITICAL party leaders must sign a no-violence pact prior to the August elections and set sanctions which will be strictly enforced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga has said. And Dr Mwaanga called for the demilitarising of political party cadres ahead of the elections. He said in an interview that political party leaders should not be avoiding one another or communicating through the media but should be talking amongst themselves. Dr Mwaanga said the power to end political violence and ensure peaceful elections where people vote without fear of being brutalised lied with political leaders. He said elections nowadays were marred with violence because leaders were behaving as if they were enemies. Dr Mwaanga said politics was not about violence but that
it was a competition of ideas so that the ultimate “bosses,” the voters decide who they want. T
HE National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA) Executive Director Professor Royson Mukwena has reaffirmed the institutions commitment to empower Zambians to benefit from the global economy through the international relations and diplomacy programmes offered by the institution. And NIPA Registrar Maxwell Saya said the institution will this year give scholarships to 700 students wishing to study as clearing and forwarding agents. Professor Mukwena said NIPA was working in collaboration with Smart Zambia Institute to interstate the use of Information Communications Technology (ICT) in finding solutions to smart climate change practices and mitigation of change effects. He was speaking during the launch of the workshop dubbed ‘emerging reporting trends in the Covid-19 New normal’ held at the newly constructed state of the art
NIPA conference centre. Prof Mukwena said NIPA has made various investments in human capital that contributes to industrial development and cutting edge public administration. He said NIPA, which plans to introduce PHD programmes, would aim to em-

In the first count, particulars of the offence are that the girl, being with a child and with intent to procure her own miscarriage, unlawfully administered to herself a
noxious stuff on December 31, 2020, contrary to Section 152 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. The case comes up on March 17, 2021 for another mention and possible committal to the High Court; and the accused persons’ police bond has been extended.

UNZA EVICTS ILLEGAL TENANTS BY KETRA KALUNGA EVICTIONS of former students that are still occupying hostels at the University of Zambia (UNZA) have started. This follows a directive by President Edgar Lungu last month for management to do an inventory of students residing in the institution accommodation to ascertain whether all of them were students. The Head of State made the directive following re-
ports that genuine students such as the first years were grappling with accommodation as some former students were still occupy the rooms at the institution. UNZA Vice Chancellor, Luke Mumba, said in an interview that the evictions started soon after President Lungu gave the directive. Professor Mumba said the dean of students, working with the department of security services had been working around the clock to evict all those that were illegally occupying student
hostels. "We started working on the matter soon after the pronouncements by the Head of State were made on Friday, 19 February, the following Monday we started, so we are working on it," he said. Prof Mumba that the exercise was ongoing and the department engaged to carry out the evictions would be concluded in a week's time. He said a report on the outcome of the exercise would be delivered to his office at the end of the ex-
ercise. "I am expecting the report on the outcome or the exercise, I gave the two offices, the Dean or students security services department two weeks in which to conclude the exercise," he said. President Lungu said when commissioned the teaching and learning complex at UNZA that he has also received reports that some students and even former students were renting out accommodation to students who had nowhere to stay.

PENSIONS, INSURANCE POST 11.3 PERCENT GROWTH BY BUUMBA CHIMBULU
T
HE pension and insurance industries last year recorded marginal growth of 11.3 percent largely due to the negative impact of Covid-19, as it pays out K680, 000 to policyholders affected by two liquidated firms. The pension industry net assets stood at K8.86 billion as at December 2020 compared to K7.96 billion in 2019 translating into an increase of 11.3 percent. Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) acting Chief Registrar, Tresford Chiyavula, said the industry was not spared from the negative effect arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr Chiyavula said the pension contributions arrears increased and some insurance classes such as life and travel insurance did not perform to expectations. He said some areas of the
industries such as the combined Gross Written Premiums (GWP) for both the longterm and general insurance business contracted by 13 percent to K1, 150 million as at 30th September 2020 from K1, 326 million in the corresponding quarter of 2019. He said in a statement that the GWP for the general Insurance was K720 million, while long-term insurance contributed K430 million. “The significant decrease was attributed to the longterm insurance business, and largely arose due to defaults in servicing of insurance policies, which can mainly be attributed to the effects of Covid-19 on the economy,” Mr Chiyavula said. He indicated that net assets in the insurance industry increased by 56.88 percent from K762.38 million in the third quarter of 2019, to K1, 196 million at the end of the third quarter of 2020.
Mr Chiyavula
Mr Chiyavula attributed the increase to assets introduced by insurance entities to meet solvency requirements. He however said pension investment income for the year ending December 2020 stood at K1, 186.94 million compared to K805.30 million
in 2019 translating into an increase of 47.4 percent. This increase, Mr Chiyavula said, was mainly attributed to the positive performances of Government bonds, collective investment schemes and offshore investments. Meanwhile, Mr Chiyavula said the industry last year paid out approximately K680, 000 to affected policy holders for the two insurance firms which were liquidated in 2018. PIA in 2018 placed Focus Life Assurance and A Plus Life Assurance Limited under compulsory liquidation. These two liquidations affected in excess of 1,800 policyholders under Focus Life Assurance and 780 under A Plus Life Assurance, respectively. Mr Chiyavula said the total value of policyholder liabilities is estimated at K7.51 million in respect of Focus Life Assurance and K1.92 million for A Plus Life Assurance.

Zambia’s business pulse slump BY BUUMBA CHIMBULU DESPITE business sentiment scaling to fourmonth high, Zambia’s business pulse slid to a six month low, according to the February Markit Economics report. Business conditions deteriorated to a greater extent in February, driven by pandemic related factors and a weakened exchange rate widening input costs for manufacturers. February Stanbic Bank Zambia’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) plummeted to 47.1 from 47.7 in the previous month, the lowest since September last year. “Hopes that conditions would improve following the end of the Covid-19 pandemic supported confidence, with 17 percent of respondents signalling optimism,” the survey re-
vealed. Key drivers of the retreat included second viral wave strain resulting in ecosystem supply disruptions under the shadow of a currency depreciation. The report revealed that February was characterised by lack of money in circulation also impacting output. Activity fell at a substantial pace, and to the greatest extent since last August. The PMI indicated that both output and new orders decreased at a faster pace, mainly linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. “On the price front, the PMI said, cost inflation remained relatively muted despite upward pressure from ongoing currency weakness. “It indicated that business confidence remained relatively muted despite ticking up from that seen in December 2020,” the survey indicated. Falling new orders meant that companies were able to work through outstanding business, despite delays caused by
Lusaka MFEZ gets $100m Indo Bank boosts health front-liners feeding initiative ceramic investment BY BUUMBA CHIMBULU A CHINESE firm has begun construction of two factories for ceramic tiles and baby diapers at an estimated investment of US$110 million in Zambia. The two factories are located in the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ) with US$100 million invested in a tile factory and US$10 million in the baby diaper factory respectively. The investments set up by Sunda Group are expected to contribute to Zambia’s industrialisation and value addition agenda as the group will undertake more business ventures in the country. This is according to Sunda Group vice president, Daniel Wang, during the meeting he had with the Zambia Consulate General, Daniel Chisenga, held on Tuesday this week. Mr Wang said the investment had already created 500 jobs for Zambians in the construction phase and is expected to create
1500 jobs once production begins. He said the tile factory which would produce tiles under the brand name Twyford would commence production next month while the baby diaper factory would begin production in June, this year under the brand name Softcare. “The tile factory under Keda Zambia Ceramics Company Limited is a joint venture between Sunda Group and Keda Industrial Group while the baby diaper factory under Sunda Industrial Zambia Company Limited is wholly owned by Sunda Group,” he said. Mr Wang said the Group would utilise 95 percent locally sourced inputs in the production of ceramic tiles thereby promoting value addition and creating an estimated 2,000 indirect jobs. He pledged to support Zambia’s industrialisation and value addition agenda as the Group will undertake more business ventures in the country.
In response, Mr Chisenga noted that the investment gave impetus for Zambia’s economic diplomacy. He said this was a strategy under which Missions abroad were tasked to attract foreign private investment thereby contributing to Zambia’s industrialisation agenda. The Consulate General of the Republic of Zambia in Guangzhou identified Sunda Group as a potential investor back in 2019 through its investment promotion programme. The Group has since undertaken several business visits to Zambia to conduct market research and begun construction works of its two factories in Zambia in early 2020.

BY BUUMBA CHIMBULU INDO Zambia Bank (IZB) has contributed K15, 000 towards the feeding programme being understand by the Lions Club of Woodlands for health frontline workers at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital. The initiative which started last week is meant to raise funds to feed 171 front liners who include doctors, nurses, cleaners and other support staff at the hospital. IZB is aware that healthcare workers are placed under immense pressure putting their wellbeing at risk, says Bank's Communications and Brand Officer, Linda Simukoko. Ms Simukoko said yesterday in Lusaka during the handover of the cheque that the initiative was consistent with IZB's brand values. She encouraged other stakeholders to support such initiatives and appreciate the huge sacrifice that each front liner was making, as they continued to save lives and looking after the community. "IZB is donating K15,000 towards the programme with a hope that this initiative will motivate and encourage these frontiers to continue with the

same spirit of hard work and dedication towards the call to duty and the fight against Covid-19, " Ms Simukoko said. She urged the public to support the healthcare workers by adhering to the health guidelines to curb the spread the new Covid-19 variant and its resultant burden on the health facilities. In receiving the cheque, Lions Club of Woodlands president, Kabwe Kandeke, said the initiative was meant to recognise the hard work being undertaken by frontline workers. Mr Kandeke explained that the programme was also meant to appreciate the health frontline workers who were sacri-
ficing their lives in the fight against Covid-19. "This situation requires a lot of effort, provide support and assistance to our health frontline workers. "We had other cooperating partners and this week we have IZB to support the initiative in form of money, " he said. Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital Superintendent, Penias Tembo, encouraged the health frontline workers to continue performing their duties. Dr Tembo said while the numbers were dropping, the health workers still needed to continue working with the same spirit.

Half of Zim’s restaurants risk closing for good as lockdown measures chew into earnings HARARE - Zimbabwe might have eased back from the bulk of the Covid-19-induced restrictions that were imposed at the start of the year, but the prescribed operating conditions for restaurants will leave half of the sector on the brink of closure - for good according to the industry. The country has been under Level 4 Covid-19 lockdown measures since January 5 following a spike in infections and deaths. As of March 1, Zimbabwe had recorded 36, 115 cases and 1, 468 deaths. But with the number of cases, hospitalisations and fatalities having significantly dropped since, the economy has been opened with most businesses allowed to operate - with the exception of bars, beerhalls, nightclubs and gyms. In an address on Monday, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa allowed restaurants to continue operating on the condition that they only provide take-aways and deliveries and not allow sitdown dining.
BUDGET 2021: Rishi Sunak vows to 'protect jobs and livelihoods' LONDON - Chancellor Rishi Sunak has vowed to "protect the jobs and livelihoods of the British people" as the UK emerges from the coronavirus crisis. He extended furlough until September - but he also announced plans to increase the tax on large company profits from 2023 in his Budget speech. National Insurance and VAT rates will not go up, but a million more people will start paying income tax. Sir Keir Starmer said the Budget was "nowhere near ambitious enough". The economy will bounce back quicker than previously
Operators, however, feel that partial operations - with no end to the Covid-19 crisis in sight - will leave the bulk of them teetering on the brink of collapse. Players in the sector say they are at a crossroads and if urgent attention is not given, the situation will spell disaster for the restaurant trade and many of its suppliers. Since the initial lockdown of March 2020, it is estimated that up to 100 restaurants have not reopened, having not been able to survive the initial closure and the subsequent partial operation phases. It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 jobs have been lost in that time. In a press statement on Tuesday, Restaurant Operators’ Association of Zimbabwe (ROAZ) president Bongai Zamchiya said the non-operational or partial-operational status of restaurants since March last year has created a massive problem for the trade, and up to half of existing operations are on the brink of permanent closure. As at the end of February 2021, ROAZ estimates that short-term prospects for restaurants are bleak unless operational capacity is restored. Up to 50 percent of operations - employing up to 4, 500 to 5, 500 people - will be closed permanently, it estimates. – FIN24.
thought, with lower unemployment and higher growth, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) watchdog. The unemployment rate is set to peak at 6.5 percent, meaning 1.8 million fewer people are expected to be out of work than predicted last July, the OBR said. But Sunak warned that repairing the long-term damage "will take time." Despite the £280bn of support already committed to protecting the economy the harm done by coronavirus has been "acute," he told MPs. "Our economy has shrunk by 10 percent - the largest fall in over 300 years. Our borrowing is the highest it has been outside of wartime. "It's going to take this country - and the whole world - a long time to recover from this extraordinary economic situation. But we will recover." He set out measures aimed at creating jobs and preventing businesses from going under as emergency support is withdrawn over the coming months. – BBC.
DIAMONDS SET TO SHINE H
ARARE Zimbabwe’s diamond sector is poised to “shine brighter” on the back of private capital coming on board to augment State operations. Government, through the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (Pvt) Limited, is currently playing a near monopoly role in the production of diamonds in country. But with President Mnangagwa’s Zimbabwe’s open for business mantra, which seeks to draw private capital into the economy, private players are coming on board to lead what looks set to be a diamond revolution in the short to medium term. Murowa Diamonds, a
subsidiary of RioZim Limited, has set the tone unveiling plans to plough in US$450 million for an extensive expansion drive at their operation in the Midlands Province. Elsewhere, the world’s largest diamond mining concern – Alrosa - which boasts of an annual turnover of 35 million
carats has made huge strides at the Malipathi Diamond Project with exploration work in full swing. The Russian diamond mining behemoth is partnering ZCDC in the project and early indications on the ground are the Special Grant potential for commercially viable rare and high
value diamonds. Another miner, Anjin Mining Company, whose operation was reopened by President Mnangagwa in August last year, is investing US$38 million at their Chiadzwa operations that is set to boost production. – THE HERALD, Zimbabwe.

Congrats to Kamanga on being re-elected FAZ chief Dear Editor, I WISH to congratulate Andrew Kamanga on being re-elected as the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president last Saturday. Kamanga retained his position after beating his rival Emmanuel Munaile, the former Member of Parliament and former FAZ vice president. Kamanga polled 57 votes while Munaile got 29 votes at last Saturday’s elective annual general meeting held at Fairmount Hotel in Livingstone. The annual general meeting was last year postponed because of the coronavirus. It is good that the long awaited elections have passed. Prior to the elections, FAZ was embroiled in some wrangles among the committee members. However, these wrangles were exacerbated by politics which took centre stage in the governing of football in our country. The unresolved wrangles
in FAZ should be left behind as the re-election of Kamanga marks the new dawn in the governance of football in our country. Football is the unifying factor and the number one sport globally and Zambia in particular. However, the aftermath of the FAZ elections should now set the new tone in reviving the dwindling football standards in our country particularly at the senior national team level. Zambia was once a football powerhouse in Africa. In view of this, it is important to do something to regain the lost football glory. It is unacceptable that our senior national football team have failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) football tournament and also for the 2019 AfCON edition. I am cheered with Kamanga’s statement after his victory that it is now the time for reconciliation in the spirit of improving the football standards in our country. I wish Kamanga all the best as he embarks on his tour of duty in his second term of office. Let the stakeholders support the Kamanga executive so that it delivers on its mandate of developing football in the country. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.
HH’S PRIDE, ARROGANCE ARE HIS POLITICAL FLAWS .... otherwise he would have been Republican President today Dear Editor,
T
HE late Anderson Kambela Mazoka built the UPND from scratch and within three years, he had built up a formidable infrastructure that almost defeated the MMD in 2001. However, the current UPND president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema has been using the infrastructure Mr Mazoka left behind to bargain for political clout thereby exposing his lust for power. Since taking over the UPND (by default), Mr Hichilema has always been looking for who to use to get to State House. He found on a silver plate the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which consisted of the UPND, FDD and UNIP already in place, ready to challenge Levy Mwanawasa and the MMD in the 2006 General Elections. Despite being a novice in politics, Mr Hichilema bullied his way to being the Alliance’s presidential candidate by insulting FDD president Edith Nawakwi that she belonged to the kitchen thereby wasn’t
fit to be the Alliance’s presidential candidate. Mr. Hichilema contested the 2006 General Elections and came out third getting 25 percent of the vote and the UDA got 26 seats in the National Assembly, consequently, the Alliance disbanded officially in 2008. On June 4, 2009, the PF and the UPND announced the formation of an electoral pact called PF-UPND Alliance. The PF president Michael Sata and Mr Hichilema were hailed by their supporters as patriots who had cast aside their selfish and parochial interests to foster unity in the opposition to help defeat President Rupiah Banda and the MMD. The formation of the pact was clouded in secrecy and the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed provided bare information. However a secret agreement existed, that provided that although a presidential candidate would not be announced till 2011, Mr Sata would stand while Mr Hichilema was designated as Vice-President. Further the secret agreement stated that Mr Sata would only rule for one presidential term while Mr Hichilema would take over the reins in 2016. Hence began the troubles of the pact. As a way of proving their imaginary political clout over Mr Sata and the PF, Mr Hichilema and the UPND began to predict that since
President Mwanawasa was a “Bantu-Botatwe” and was no longer on the scene, they could recapture the strongholds the party lost to the MMD after the 2006 elections and previously held after the 2001 elections.
When Mr Hichilema came back from the United States in May of 2010, he called for a press conference prior to his arrival. Upon his arrival he declared that he was the most suitable presidential candidate for the pact because of his young age, claiming that this was the world trend Zambia was to follow. He claimed that what had happened during that period in the US, Russia, Tanzania and the United Kingdom where young candidates in Barack Obama, Dmitry Medvedev, Jakaya Kikwete and David Cameron defeated older candidates gave him hope to lead the pact. During the same press briefing, ,r Hichilema HH threw shade on the PF and Mr Sata by claiming that PF had lost significant ground in their strongholds in Luapula, Northern and Copperbelt provinces following former President Frederick Chiluba’s public support to President Banda and the MMD and this brought immediate concerns from the PF and Mr Sata. This was followed by attempts by UPND to justify and underplay Mr Hichilema’s mild statement. But Mr Sata and the PF could not be fooled because
Mr Hichilema’s greediness had already been exposed. Rumours of the Pact splitting started gaining momentum. On March 11, 2011, the UPND officially announced that it had broken away from the electoral pact with the PF. They accused Mr Sata of being disrespectful towards the UPND. Announcing the party’s decision to breakaway from the pact during a press briefing, UPND vice president then Mr. Richard Kapita expressed confidence that the UPND were going to emerge victorious in the September 20 elections. Seven months later, the general elections were held and Mr Sata defeated President Banda of the MMD. PF got 42.85 percent of the total votes cast while UPND which came out third got only 18.54 percent. The PF emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly, winning 60 of the 148 seats. The lesson to learn from Mr Hichilema’s political flaws and lust for power is that patience, humbleness and humility pays. Had Mr Hichilema humbled himself and let the Great Michael Sata lead the PF-UPND electoral pact, he would have been Republican President today. His pride cost him the Vice Presidency and much worse the Presidency. As the word of scripture puts - it Pride comes before a fall. MARVELLOUS SAKALA.
High cost of goods and services affecting majority Zambians Dear Editor, THE depreciation of the Kwacha against the major convertible currencies such as the dollar has led to a spike in the price of consumer goods and services. The exchange rate of the Kwacha against other currencies in the world is the determining factor for the price of goods and services as alluded earlier. The Kwacha has been on the downward trend for quite some time. It is currently trading at about K22.00 per One US Dollar (US$1.00). However, the majority of the people in our country are wallowing in abject poverty owing to various factors. The major factor contributing to high poverty levels is that many people are not in formal employment. Other people are in the informal sector running their own enterprises and they are not making enough money to meet their financial obligations. Even the people in formal employment face some
financial problems because they might not get enough salaries. Worse still, the same employees might not get paid on time. The national economy is not doing well and our leaders have attributed this bad state of affairs to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Despite this being the case, the gist of the matter is that many people are poverty stricken and something must be done about it. From the economic perspective, Zambia recently recorded the balance of trade deficit. This implies that our country imported more goods than it exported. Ultimately, this has adversely affected the Growth Domestic Product. The price of consumer goods such as mealie meal, flour, flour products, milk, sugar and meat products, among others has risen. The price of mealie meal, our staple food is trading between K130 and K150. This price range is dependent on the geographical location and distance from the milling plant. I feel that moving forward, the country should revive the agriculture, manufacturing, mining and tourism sectors so as to spur economic growth. This will in turn lead to the creation of more employment opportunities. ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

PND will only adopt members who are strong on the ground to stand as Members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors in the August 12 elections, Kitwe district chairman, Elvis Nkandu, has said. Mr Nkandu said the party has received 17 applications from members seeking adoption in five constituencies in Kitwe. He said the UPND would only adopt those who were popular and loyal to the party. In an interview in Kitwe, Mr Nkandu said those who would not be adopted should continue to remain loyal to the party and not to abandon the opposition out of bitterness. “We have 17 aspiring candidates for the five constituencies in Kitwe and I am sure even aspiring candidates know that not everyone will be adopted in the August elections. Those who will not be adopted, should remain loyal to the party.
CANDIDATES
Mr Nkandu said those who would not be adopted should be ready to be campaign managers of the adopted candidates or to be drafted into the campaign teams “Let me make one point clear, there will be no favours. Only those who are on the ground will be adopted to stand. Those who are not the ground, their chances are slim. We want people who are on the ground,” Mr Nkandu said. Mr Nkandu said those who would not be adopted should be ready to be campaign managers of the adopted candidates or to be drafted into the campaign teams He urged party members to remain united and strong after the adoption process so that they could set the stage for victory in the August elections. “After the adoptions, let us remain united and strong. Those who will not be adopted must be ready to be drafted into campaign teams while others may be campaign managers for those adopted. “After the adoptions, we need unity of purpose to set the stage for victory in the August elections. We need to work hard,” he said.

TSC ‘importing’ teachers in North-west, says NAQEZ By JACKSON MAPAPAYI
T
HE National Quality for Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) is not impressed with the manner the Teaching Service Commission and the Ministry of General Education are making replacements for teachers in North-western province. NAQEZ deputy provincial coordinator, Joseph Chipoya, charged that teachers were coming from the Copperbelt and Lusaka to take up vacancies in the North-western province when there were thousands of trained but unemployed teachers within the region. He said once deployed, the teachers from outside the province get transfers back to urban areas, leaving schools without teachers. Mr Chipoya that the trend was retrogressive and that it had been going on for many years. MR CHIPOYA
“But, I think time has come to put a stop to it because if not halted, North- Western will perpetually have critically understaffed schools. And without teachers in schools, the province will struggle to offer quality education to its citizens,” “But, I think time has come to put a stop to it because if not halted, North- Western will perpetually have critically understaffed schools. And without teachers in schools, the province will struggle to offer quality education to its citizens,” he said. Mr Chipoya appealed to Government to begin recruiting teachers from the province because such teachers would never leave the rural area since they truly understand its social and cultural landscape. “On the other hand, NAQEZ is also against importation of teachers from other provinces on promotional footing at the expense of other hardworking officers within the province. This is very demotivating on teachers who have been very committed to work in the province under harsh conditions,” he added. However, efforts to get a comment from North-western province Education officer Dr Muyapekwa Nyambe proved futile by press time.

DESIST FROM HATE-SPEECH, POLITICIANS ADVISED By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
H
ATE- SPECCH among politicians may lead to voter apathy in this year’s general elections if not quickly addressed, the AntiVoter Apathy Project (AVAP) has observed. AVAP Copperbelt Coordinator, Poster Jumbe, said voters would be left with no choice but to shy away from voting because of such vices. He said such vices discouraged the voters because they would fee politicians had nothing to offer apart from insults. Mr Jumbe said Zambians would in most cases fail to differentiate a politician who meant well from one who did not if most of them engaged in character assassination. “We need to work out our differences as one people and avoid calling each other names in the media to avoid apathy in this year’s general election. “Voter apathy is a danger to the peace and democracy of the country and that is why we should avoid it at all cost,” he said. Mr Jumbe advised politicians to use every available platform to sell out their manifestos and tell Zambians why they should be voted for instead of engaging in insults. He said it was the duty of the leaders to build the tenets of democracy and uphold the Christian values in the Christian nation. Mr Jumbe said the use of hate speech by the leaders showed nothing but that they were failures and unpatriotic. “We want to see all politicians co-exist and give manifestos to the people. Ideologies that add value to development and peace,” Mr Jumbe said.

Luano PF cry for local game investor BY CHARLES MUSONDA
P
ATRIOTIC Front (PF) officials in Luano district have appealed to Tourism and Arts minister Ronald Chitotela to explain delays in granting a wildlife conservation concession license to a local investor for four years now. In an interview in Lusaka, PF Ching’ombe ward youth chairperson Sydney Chose said youths in Upper Luano have nothing to do as there are no companies to work for. Mr. Chose said in 2018 Senior Chief Mboroma welcomed a local investor who is willing to invest in the area, which was just open for many years and poachers were killing animals at will to the point of almost depleting wildlife. He said the named local investor has now employed village scouts and he is paying them using his own money just to ensure animals are protected from poachers but the ministry is delaying signing a concession agreement for him. “We are lucky that the Chief has welcomed the local investor because he is Zambian and as a community we were happy that we can work with him so that all the wealth can remain in Zambia and for the benefit of our community. “We are surprised that despite the local investor working well with the community, there is no response from the ministry for four years now. We are complaining that before we go to the elections, the ministry should answer the local investor as quickly as possible,” Mr. Chose said. He said the PF in Luano is happy that the local investor has even helped the ruling party to grow in the district and members hope that if he is granted the concession license, he will continue helping the party to grow stronger. And Senior Chief Mboroma section headman Evaristo Chose challenged the ministry to explain problems it has found in the local investor by continuing to deny him the concession license for Upper Luano. Mr. Chose said their colleagues in West Petauke have jobs because of investors operating tour businesses as opposed to the Luano community where there has been no tour operator for 30 years now. He said Luano has a secondary school and a clinic but that there are no roads and that it takes an ambulance 12 hours to ferry patients to Mkushi district hospital.

Western powers scrap plan for IAEA rebuke of Iran, diplomats say
VIENNA - Britain, France and Germany have scrapped a U.S.backed plan for the U.N. nuclear watchdog’s board to criticise Iran for scaling back cooperation with the agency, diplomats said yesterday, amid concerns about efforts to revive Iran’s nuclear deal. The European powers, all parties to the 2015 nuclear deal, have been lobbying for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s 35-nation Board of Governors to adopt a resolution at this week’s quarterly meeting expressing concern at Iran’s latest breaches of the deal and calling on it to undo them. – REUTERS.
Violence erupts as kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls return to families JANGEBE, Nigeria - One moment, Hadiza was weeping and flinging her arms around her father for the first time since her abduction; the next gunfire and tear gas filled the air and people ran for cover. It was supposed to be a joyous reunion to end the five-day ordeal of 279 girls kidnapped last week from the Jangebe Government Girls Science Secondary School in a remote corner of northwest Nigeria. Cheering children had lined the street as buses brought the girls, grinning and waving, back to their school from the Zamfara state capital Gusau, where they had been cared for since their release on Tuesday. “Thank you! Thank you!” yelled one. Relatives crammed around the buses, and parents laughed with joy as they found their daughters, who shouted “Thank God!”
Less than 40 minutes later, pandemonium broke out. As government officials in a hall were giving lengthy speeches in front of the girls, impatient parents burst in and grabbed their children to take them home. The officials ran out and shortly afterwards, reporters heard gunshots outside the school gates. They saw police firing tear gas at a group of protesters outside the school, and soldiers shooting into the air. At least three people were hit by bullets, but it was not immediately clear by whom. A Reuters journalist’s video showed hundreds of people fleeing down a side street. Two girls grabbed hands, ducked - and then ran as the soldiers fired. Elsewhere, people threw rocks at government officials’ and reporters’ cars hurriedly leaving town. The chaos drives home the desperation of the situation in northwest Nigeria, where banditry has festered for years, rendering large swathes of the region lawless. – REUTERS.

CHAD PRESIDENT CLEARED TO RUN FOR SIXTH TERM N
’DJAMENA - Chad's Supreme Court has cleared President Idris Deby, who has been in power for 30 years, to seek a sixth term in office in the April 11 presidential election. He faces nine other candidates who were qualified by the Supreme Court, including his main and historical rival, Saleh Kebzabo. The inclusion of Kebzabo, who had on Monday withdrawn his candidacy, has raised questions. The opposition leader had cited the "obvious militarisation of the political climate" following the deadly attempt by security forces to arrest another opposition candidate, Yaya Dillo, at his home in the capital, N'Djamena.
The February 28 attack left five members of Dillo’s family dead, according to his party, although the government says three people were killed, including the mother of the opposition leader. The Supreme Court rejected the candidacy of
seven other aspirants including Dillo and Succès Masra on grounds that their parties were not "legally constituted." With the crackdown on a fractured opposition, the incumbent is now seen as the favourite to win re-election for a sixth term.

Road Traffic Crashes contributory factors Even though human error is often cited as a contributing factor in most vehicle crashes, the recent road traffic accident statistics report indicates that a considerable number of collisions in Zambia over the past years were caused by motor vehicles in poor operating conditions. Significant numbers of public service vehicles are among the critical and risk vehicles with multiple violations. This scenario has pushed the Road Transport and Safety Agency to over the years implement vigorous measures to enhance motor vehicle examination for roadworthiness. Mechanical failure due to poor roadworthiness of a motor vehicle can cause road accidents due to failure of breaks, locked steering wheel, tyre burst and any other failure that could be questioned as having instigated the car not to perform as normal. COVID-19 DEATHS SO SUDDEN AND TRAGGIC
‘GOODBYE’ IS THE SADDEST WORD, EVEN SADDER WHEN SUDDEN AND LONELY
T
ODAY we continue with the second part of “The tribute to the departed” where we continue to honour lives lost to Covid-19. From the time of the previous publication to now, sadly some more beautiful souls were lost. Please let us take a moment of silence in their honour and memory.
However goodbye becomes the saddest word when we know we shall never say hello again. THE FINAL GOODBYE Like we said hello to Mother Earth, there shall come a time we shall say goodbye and of all the goodbyes that will be the last, the most

EARTH OUR SMALL HOME Cosmologists and Astrophysicists say we live on a tiny rock called Earth which itself is the third planet in the Solar System which itself is in the tiny Orion arm of the Spiral Galaxy called the Milky Way Galaxy, which itself is just one of billions of Galaxies in the vastness of the Universe. And yet we call Earth home. For Earth is all we know, we are born here, we grow here. We do not even remember our time in our mothers’ wombs or the taste of their breast milk or even where we were before conception and yet we move on with our limitations. We take on life’s Journey, we meet strangers along the way, the first and closest we call family. Then we make friends, enemies, fall in love, break up, make up etc. We go to schools colleges universities, get jobs, leave home, build our own Families. We are so small yet our imaginations and consciousness are so unlimited, we touch people’s lives permanently. But as we move along lifes’ journey we realise we have to say a series of goodbyes. Life itself is a series of meetings and partings, a series of hellos and goodbyes. Our first goodbyes were painful but as we live on we realise that is just how life is, we say goodbye to our childhood friends, classmates etc.
meaningful and sadly the most painful. No one can say for sure where we go when we die though a lot of religions try to answer this and differ a lot. But one thing we can agree upon is that if most had a choice we would not want to say this final goodbye but seeing that it is inevitable, we would only hope we say it in a better way. There are so many ways people die, some from natural causes like old age, some from chronic illnesses like cancer. Some commit suicide, others die from homicides, still others die in accidents like car and plane crashes etc. There are some that choose to die what they call “good death,” Euthanasia, which is legal just in a few countries but not legal in Zambia. The dying choose who to be by the bedside,

Others had just gotten married etc. Then all of a sudden, they were in hospital, in no time on oxygen and then just like that they were gone. Some went without having written or updated their Will. Some left without having mended the broken hearts etc. These deaths are so sudden like a tragic accident. The staff went, picked it up and brought it to the ward. It was wrapped in a plastic but you could see there were three nice warmers inside. Suddenly, things just changed. Whilst attending to another patient, we noticed the man had become restless. Checking the saturations that were not long ago above 90 percent were now below 60 percent and dropping very fast further down. I know some that have left notes for their loved ones, some text messages, some just clothes, some wedding rings etc. To you our departed, indeed you may have had a sudden and lonely goodbye but your memories shall forever live on. In your honour we shall keep on the fight until SARSCOV2 raises the white flag. Rest in peace beloved. And to you reading this article, you who is still on this side of Mother Earth, how would you want your last goodbye to be like? Would you wish this sudden and lonely good bye on anyone especially your loved ones or later on yourselves?

Katoba eyes nation-wide talent identification By NATION REPORTER
THE four-year journey to 2025 will see nation-wide talent identification as the immediate priority, the newly elected Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) National Women's representative Colonel Priscilla Katoba has said. Following her election to the FAZ executive committee, Katoba has highlighted the need to grow the pool from which national team players can be selected while promoting professional women's football. "I want to see that every province has a women’s team. This will enable us to have competitive football," she said. She said that currently only about four provinces had representatives in the national team - Lusaka, Southern, Central and North-Western. Katoba said ideally there should be wider participa-
tion for slots in the Senior Women, Under 20 and Under 17 national teams. The Green Buffaloes Women Football Club President, who is also Queens Academy proprietor said it was an honour to be voted into office. "It is a great honour. This is a mantle I want to carry with care and determination," she said in an interview. "I want to appreciate my campaign team that fought this battle to the very end, my family that supported me and the Zambia Army command that allowed me to stand and contest this position. She said she wanted women's football to be given more publicity to make it more professional and attract sponsors. FAZ this year announced the women's national league that has seen teams drawn from Katoba also stressed the need to educate players, to ensure their livelihoods beyond their football careers. She insists that women's football requires better incentives to help motivate players to participate in professional football and encourage parents to see it as a viable career option. Regarding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Katoba said she expects that the Copper Queens were aiming for wins and not just mere participation.

NAPSA STARS DIMMED
…as Zesco United reclaim top By MICHAEL MIYOBA and MUKWIMA CHILALA
C
AF Confederations Cup envoys Napsa Stars failed to shine at Khosa Stadium where they were made to chase shadows as Young Green Eagles ran riot to emerge 3-1 winners in yesterday’s Week-20 FAZ Super Division fixture. Goals from Jack Ngulube, Damiano Kola and Isaac Ngoma handed Napsa a heavy defeat which denied Mohamed Fathi’s boys a chance to move into 11th on the FAZ Super Division table. Ngulube broke the deadlock with a superb strike on the half hour mark to put the hosts ahead while their second had to come through Kola 15 minutes into the second half. Napsa’s clumsy defence was punished further in the 65th minute when Ngoma slotted in an empty net after taking advantage of Rabson Muchelenganga and Luka Banda’s failure to clear the ball before Jimmy Mukeya got the consolation goal for Napsa in the dying minutes. The defeat in Kafue was painful for Fathi who had rested some of his key players such as Emmanuel Mayuka and Dickson Chapa who came on when it was too late to rescue the Pensioners from losing in Kafue. Mayuka and Chapa came in for Doisy Soko and Danny Silavwe but their introduction made no impact. At Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zesco United sailed to a 4-1 win over Lumwana Radiants to dislodge Zanaco from the top spot on the Super Division table. Defenders Adrian Chama and former Under-20 captain Solomon Sakala showed strikers how it is done, scoring two great goals which had given Zesco a 2-0 lead before Luwawa Kasoma and Thabani Kamusoko came through with a goal apiece. Chama put Zesco ahead with a wonderful goal from their centre line after he spotted keeper Ngelekwa Katembwa off his line before unleashing a long range effort which the keeper parried into his own net. Sakala doubled Zesco’s advantage after heading in Jese Were’s corner before Kasoma benefitted from Kalengo’s through ball to score his maiden goal and Zesco’s third. Emmanuel Manda scored the consolation goal for Radiants but it was Kamusoko who put the icing on the cake with a fine finish as the Ndola giants collected their fourth consecutive win. Meanwhile, Red Arrows propelled to 28 points on the Super Division table where they are seventh after edging Prison Leopards 1-0 thanks to James Chamanga’s solo goal at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.
