COMMISSION of inquiry into the privatisation of state assets should not be abandoned because Zambians needed to know why a hotel worth US$25 million was sold at USS$5 million, Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) leader, Robert Mwanza has said. Mr Bwalya said the death of Mr Ngo who also served as Permanent Secretary for Northern Province and the Ministry of Local Government is a great loss to the province and the nation.
‘DON’T ABANDON PRIVATISATION INQUIRY’ benefitted from the transactions. He called on President Edgar Lungu to ensure that the planned inquiry was actualised because Zambians want to know if people benefitted dubiously. Mr Mwanza said there was need to bring closure to the matter because a lot of people were now victims of the fraudulent activities that might have taken place during the privatisation period. He said a commission of inquiry into the privatisation would force people to explain why a hotel worth US$25 mil-
lion was sold at USS$5 million. “The people who were involved in the selling of the assets were now keen to sale more public assets as evidenced by the pronouncements to sell the Presidential jet,” said Mr Mwanza. He said it was in the interest of the people of Zambia that the matter was not allowed to die a natural death and ensure it was concluded before the general elections. ‘Pay us K1m before interparte hearing’ …as ordered by court, NDC Kambwili`tells Akafumba faction By KETRA KALUNGA THE Joseph Akafumba faction should pay K1 million for us to sit for the interparte court hearing, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC), spokesperson, Saboi Imboela. Mr Akafumba and his team were ordered to pay K1 million costs. Ms Imboela said in an interview that Mr Akafumba and his group should pay the money before the interparte hearing slated for Friday this week as ordered by the court. She dismissed the warning from the Akafumba faction that Mr Kambwili should stop masquerading as NDC
leader. Ms Imboela clarified that Mr Kambwili was the NDC President as ruled by the court when it stayed the order from Mr. Akafumba and his team to prevent him from acting as leader. “Let me educate Mr Akafumba, the ex-parte order of stay of proceedings is simple and clear. Mr. Kambwili is still the President of the NDC and will continue so unless the court determines otherwise,” she said. Meanwhile, Ms Imboela said Mr Kambwili has not rejoined the Patriotic Front and when this happens it would be done officially and not in secret.
GOVERNMENT has put health frontline workers on high alert to look out for patients presenting respiratory symptoms, as Asia and Europe continue recording high numbers of new Covid-19 cases. Health Minister Dr Jonas Chanda said at a press conference in Lusaka yesterday that the Covid-19 pandemic continues to rage around the world. He however, added that fortunately for Zambia, the country has a positivity rate below five percent for the past two weeks with the overall positivity for this past week standing at three percent compared to four percent last week. Dr Chanda cautioned citizens to remain extremely cautious and continue adhering to the five golden rules and other public health guidanes as advised by the ministry. "To this end, our frontline health teams have been instructed to maintain high index of suspicion for cases presenting to health facilities with respiratory symptoms," he said. Dr Chanda said according to an analysis carried out by the Ministry of Health, length of stay
of patients in the health facilities is high. "The length of stay in health facilities by patients remains on the high side, and so we urge the public not to let down their guard down in light of the reduced numbers," he said. He said Covid-19 is real and infecting and killing the people, adding that it's worrying that some sections of the society have expressed premature elation at the perceived stability in the numbers. "We wish to caution that we still face a possible increase in cases following the incubation period, which is the time between exposure to the virus and onset of symptoms, typically 5-6 days," Dr Chanda said. He thanked the many health teams working on the ground for sustaining the fight against the pandemic. D r Chanda also
thanked cooperating partners, like the World Health Organisation and the United Kingdom for helping with capacity building in Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response, which he said has helped the country to sustain the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the country has in the past 24 hours, recorded 79 new Covid-19 cases out of 2, 872 tests conducted, representing three percent positivity. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 89, 009.

‘RELEASE MY PEOPLE’ ...Chief Cooma fumes over missing Hatembos
From page 1
Chief Cooma also demanded that those behind the heinous crime should be arrested immediately because they are not only a danger to society but also heartless. "I'm speaking as a chief from Southern Province in whose region the two missing Hatembos are domiciled. My demand is that whoever is holding on to my people should free them immediately," said Chief Cooma. He said the police should use all means available to trace and arrest the abductors so that they can account for their actions. Chief Cooma also called on other traditional leaders in the region to call and demand that all possible suspects in the matter are arrested regardless of their position in society. He said lives of the Hatembos matters and therefore everything possible should be done to find them. The furore over the missing siblings has heated up as Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary-General, Mumbi Phiri revealed that a chief in Southern province
was illegally holding the Hatembo siblings - Pheluna and Milton. The Hatembos saga erupted when the family sued UPND president Hakainde Hichilema over the acquisition of their farm which they disputed but was however dismissed in court on account of being time barred. Following this, the family agreed to appeal the matter but the missing duo suddenly appeared in Lusaka to discredit their own court case and henceforth refused to appeal the matter. Other than an appearance at another press conference organised by the ZITUKULE Consortium, the duo has not been seen in public or by their family including Pheluna’s ailing daughter, 35-year-old Nasilele Nyambe who cannot fend for herself. Nasilele is now being cared for by her elder sister, Abitail Hatembo, who complained of hardship because looking after her sister has led to her not concentrating on her business to sustain the family.
And Minister of Energy Matthew Nkhuwa said local transporters rates have been reduced to match those of the foreign transporters from Mozambique, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Commenting on the fuel shortage that hit Lusaka at the week, Mr Lungu said the Zambia National Service, Zambia Air Force and Army should take over fuel supply next time tankers drivers misbehave to avoid an economic shut down. Mr Lungu also said there must be a clear asset audit in the industry to determine who owns tankers and how vulnerable the nation was to foreign ownership. He said an influx of foreign owned tankers might lead to cartels aimed at arm-twisting government and may not be loyal to national demand. This follows concerns that despite fuel depots and

WHO OWNS THE PARKED FUEL TANKERS? tankers being full to the brim, filling stations in Lusaka have not had fuel because tanker drivers unions believed to be working under political influence had parked their trucks. Meanwhile, fuel supply has stabilised in Lusaka following President Edgar Lungu’s directive that the Ministry of Energy implements the 50 percent transportation of fuel allocated to Zambian drivers without delay. The fuel shortage was as a result of a protest by Zambian fuel tanker drivers, who had been on a go-slow protesting that foreign transporters were being given preference in the
fuel distribution business. The protesting local tanker drivers blocked foreign tankers from delivering fuel to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), leading to shortages of fuel in most filling g stations in Lusaka. A check by the Daily Nation at selected filling stations yesterday found tankers offloading fuel the commodity, while long queues of motor vehicles waited. At some service stations which did not have the commodity, the fuel attendants talked to indicated they were expecting supply later in the day. Mr Nkhuwa says this
Mr Nkhuwa comes after the Presidential directive to actualize the 50 percent fuel supply for local transporters. He said the OMCs opted to work with foreign transporters as the Zambian transporters were more expensive by 10 dollars per tonne. Mr Nkhuwa said there was now no reason for the OMCs not to use Zambian transporters.
ERB warns against panic buying of fuel
…as normal supply resumes By KETRA KALUNGA
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has warned against panic buying of fuel as normal operations by petroleum tanker drivers resume. And the ERB says there is no impending fuel price adjustment, contrary to speculations by the public. ERB public relations manager, Kwali
Mfuni says there is no need for panic because the country has adequate stocks and that normal supply has commenced. Ms. Mfuni said in a statement that regular fuel supply was expected in the country on Thursday following the resumption of normal operations by petroleum tanker drivers. She said regular fuel supply was expected to be restored in Lusaka by midday today and the rest of the country by Thursday. “It should be noted that the current disruption in supply was due to the industrial action undertaken by some
tanker drivers, and in this regard deliveries could not be made as scheduled,” Ma Mfuni said. However, she said, the ERB would like to reassure the public that there are adequate stocks of petroleum products in the country. Ms. Mfuni said to allow for a quick restoration of normal supply, members of the public are advised to buy fuel normally. She emphasized that fuel prices would remain the same countrywide, contrary to speculations by the public of a purported fuel price increment.
Bankers send fraud alert By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
THE Bankers Association of Zambia (BAZ) has warned the public to be attentive during the current difficulty economic times under the Covid-19 dispensation as fraudsters have taken advantage of the situation. The public should immediately report any suspicion or intimidation received on phone or any other media platform to the bank or state police, says BAZ Fraud Prevention and Security Committee Member, Vitalis Hamusonde. Mr Hamusonde observed that fraudsters had now resorted to using excitement and fear to get customers to respond positively to their demands. “The art of excitement appeals to your immediate emotional, material and monetary needs. In these difficult economic times under the Covid-19 dispensation, any news of winning a lottery or some gambling game is good news,” he said in a write-up on Beware of Manipulative Tactics of Fraudsters! Fraudsters, he explained, were always researching for new techniques to avoid new security systems and to dupe customers through intellectual manipulation. Mr Hamusonde said over time fraudsters had mastered and perfected the art of marketing and public relations even when most of them may have no formal education. He warned that fraudsters had also started employing marketing strategies to lure customers to disclosing their personal banking details. “For instance, the fraudster will call customers, by phone, to tell them that they have won a prize,” Mr Hamusonde said. Mr Hamusonde had therefore urged the public to always endeavour to verify information received, from whatever source, with their bank saying “if you can, make a personal visit to your bank before responding to any request involving your finances.”
The Ethiopian Airlines plane after landing at the new airport under construction on the Copperbelt By SANFROSSA MANYINDA AN Ethiopian Cargo flight erroneously landed at the new Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola which is still under construction after the pilot ignored the guidance from air traffic controllers, Ministry of Transport and Communication Permanent Secretary, Misheck Lungu has said. When contacted, Ethiopian Airlines said ‘the fact that there was no NOTAM issued regarding the construction of the new airport which has the same runway heading orientation with the existing one and the close proximity between the two airports may have contributed to the incident’. The incident happened between 12:00 and 14:00 hours on Sunday. This shocked some workers
Pilot ignored guidance who were on site and kept their eyes on the plane as they wanted to see what exactly was happening. “Preliminary investigations have indicated that the pilot of the plane did not follow the guidance, hence the error,” Mr Lungu said. He however said investigations had been instituted on the matter to establish what exactly happened. “We have not received a written report but according to the explanation that we got, it appears that the pilot ignored the instructions to guide him not to land. “By the time he was realising
that he was about to land on the wrong airport which has not yet been opened, it was too late because he had already descended,” Mr Lungu said in an interview. And in responding to a query, the airline acknowledged that its Freighter Flight number ET 3891/4 April B-737-800F on a cargo service from Addis Ababa to Ndola, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport , Zambia landed at the new airport, Copperbelt International Airport which was yet to be inaugurated. “The cargo flight made safe landing in the new airport. Although details of the incident are under investigation in coordination with the Zambian
Aeronautical Authorities, the fact that there was no NOTAM issued regarding the construction of the new airport which has the same runway heading orientation with the existing one and the close proximity between the two airports may have contributed to the incident,” the airline said. Ethiopian Airlines said it takes flight safety seriously and treats it as the top most priority and accordingly it will take all necessary corrective and preventive measures in line with the findings of the investigation. The New Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, being constructed by Avic International, is at 90 percent complete and not yet operational..

Lubusha wins support in Chipangali By TROY MUKUPA RESIDENTS of Chipangali constituency have backed the candidature of Patriotic Front (PF) aspiring parliamentary candidate Andrew Lubusha and have vowed to give President Edgar Lungu 100 per cent of votes in the August 12 elections. Speaking to the Daily Nation in Chipangali district, James Banda a resident in the area said time had come for youthful leadership to drive the developmental agenda in the constituency. “As a youth of Chipangali, I fully support Mr Lubusha as the preferred candidate capable of giving President Edgar Chagwa Lungu maximum votes from the constituency,” Mr Banda said. He said that Mr Lubusha had so far demonstrated effective leadership that was poised to transform Chipangali. Another resident, Bright Soko, said the residents had accepted the aspiring parliamentary candidate based on the development plans he has put in place for the area. “Our support for MCC Lubusha is based on the good plans he has for this area. I was born and bred here, this place has been abandoned by the previous leadership. “Lubusha has a heart for the people of Chipangali and with the works we have seen so far from him on the ground, I am proud to say this constituency needs a person like him to completely develop it,” he said. A senior citizen, Mary Zulu, thanked Mr Lubusha for donations made to Madzi-atuba Health post where he gave out beds, blankets and mattresses. She also thanked the aspiring candidate for the ongoing road works being done by the Andrew Zindhlu Lubusha Foundation in the constituency. More residents talked to vowed to fully support him should the PF central committee adopt him as i’s Chipangali constituency parliamentary candidate for the August 12 election.
Home News By KETRA KALUNGA OPPOSITION political parties have slim chances of winnning the elections because they have too much confusion and lack an independent and clear strategy, political analysis, David Kapoma has said, Mr Kapoma also said the high cost of living was not a guarantee for the opposition to think that Zambians would vote out the ruling Patriotic Front (PF). He said opposition political parties should avoid the tendency of waiting for the ruling party to make mistakes as has been the case because that showed a lack of strategy on their part. Mr Kapoma said it was this unrealistic strategy that makes the opposition have slim chances of winning the August 12, general election.

OPPOSITION PARTIES LACK WINNING STRATEGY, SAYS ANALYST He was speaking on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview television. Mr Kapoma said the opposition parties stand no chance of winning the election because there was too much confusion while the ruling party remained focused. “If you ask me this minute, chances of the opposition winning are extremely slim and I mean it, whether they want to believe me or they don’t want to believe me, that is their own baby to nurse,” he said. Mr.Kapoma explained the opposition parties did not understand that they had a
strategy to start way before the elections because their focus was election campaigns which they thought was the only way of convincing people to vote for them. He said the opposition has a lot of work to do to win the hearts of the electorates compared to the PF because the work that they have done as the ruling party speaks for itself. The road infrastructure development would win the PF a lot of votes especially to the people in the rural areas who have not even seen a good road before.

Fenix power kits light up masisi orphanage
By SIMON MUNTEMBA IT was all smiles on Saturday when Engie Access Zambia donated four Fenix Solar Kits at Kasisi orphanage in Chongwe District. The homebased solar solutions providers also donated COVID-19 essential supplies, assorted household goods and a Fenix TV Deluxe that comes with GOtv to provide entertainment for the children at the orphanage. This was good news to the children at the orphanage who due to COVID 19
health and safety measures are practicing restricted social interactions with the outside world. Receiving the donation from the Orphanage in Chongwe, Kasisi sister-in charge Sister Mariola Mierzejewska said the solar kits would go on long way in meeting the energy deficit resulting from load shedding which negatively affects the well-being of the children at the orphanage. Sister Mariola further thanked Engie Energy Access for the donation of hygiene products which she said where critical in preventing the orphanage from recording
any Covid-19 cases. And presenting the donated items, Engie Energy Access marketing manager, Tiwongi Makungo said the Engie Energy Access, whose core business is to provide lighting made the donation to commemorate Easter, a special occasion when Christians reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus which ultimately brought light to the world. Ms Makungo said Engie Energy Access remains committed to providing the best solar solutions to improve the quality of life for customers through inclusive energy.

ZRA PAYS K3BN VAT REFUNDS By BUUMBA CHIMBULU
A
BOUT K3 billion has been paid out by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) under Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds during the first quarter of this year. The largest portion of this amount has been channelled to the mining sector, says ZRA Commissioner General, Kingsley Chanda. Mr Chanda said ZRA was committed to paying all VAT refunds, emphasising that the organisation on average of every month paid claims amounting to K850 million. He said ZRA would continue to refund an average of K850 million every month
but indicated that in some months refund claims were higher than what was budgeted for, paying about K1 billion. “You many recall we had a lot of arrears that arose from the time we had issues with VAT Rule 18, which was later resolved and had to change the regulation to accommodate the challenges the tax payers had,” he said in an interview. Mr Chanda explained that ZRA’s strategy was to pay current claims, while setting aside funds to deal with more arrears. “So far we have done just under K3 billion in refunds in the first quarter of 2021 and we are focused a lot on
the mining industry because as you are aware they are the biggest claimants of refunds because of their nature of their business. “I can safely confirm that just under K3 billion had so far been paid in fact the last payments we were making was April 1, 2021 and we will continue with that programme,” Mr Chanda said. He explained that the VAT claims were either paid in cash or by offsetting against the tax payers current taxes. “We do pay refunds in form of cash and we also for those that are willing, we do offset against their current taxes through a strategy we have managed to strategically reduce arrears but one

thing I can confirm here is that as we dismantle arrears more refunds come in because that is the nature of the tax,” Mr Chanda said. He said ZRA would ensure that all those that exports had to be refunded. Mr Chanda expressed concern that ZRA’s resource basket had been constrainted, especially in 2020 and this year as well.
COMMERCIAL or private creditors must be “forced” to participate in debt relief initiatives to developing and low-income countries, says President of the World Bank Group, David Malpass. Mr Malpass indicated that the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) relief had been less than anticipated because not all creditors participated. He explained that large non-Paris Club bilateral creditors had only partially participated in the DSSI and, most troubling of all, bondholders and other private creditors had continued to collect full repayments throughout the Covid-19 crisis. He said this when delivering a speech virtually to the London School of Economics on building a green, resilient, and inclusive recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. “The implementation of the initiative shows that private and commercial creditors won’t comply with calls for “voluntary
participation” in debt relief initiatives, further demanding that they be ‘forcefully encouraged’ to participate in debt relief programmes. “The recent DSSI experience shows that commercial creditors will not comply with calls for “voluntary participation” in debt relief initiatives,” Mr Malpass said. He indicated that as the implementation of the Common Framework commences, Group of 20 countries (G20) needed to instruct and create incentives for all their public bilateral creditors to participate in debt relief efforts, including national policy banks. Mr Malpass said they also needed to forcefully encourage the private creditors under their jurisdiction to participate fully in sovereign debt relief efforts for low-income countries. He however expressed satisfaction with the DSSI initiative that had provided beneficiary countries with some level of liquidity to fight the pandemic. He noted the G20 DSSI had enabled 43 countries to postpone around US$5.7 billion in debt-service payments between May and December of last year, with further savings of up to US$7.3 billion expected by the initiative’s end-date of June 2021. Mr Malpass therefore called for an additional six months extension of the DSSI through to the end of 2021 as many countries are still battling Covid-19 and facing a liquidity squeeze.

TAX COMPLIANCE IS A GAME CHANGER FOR ALL BUSINESSES ONE vital and commonly ignored characteristic of determining a tax balance is tax compliance. In this article, we will try and share some highlights on why tax compliance is important in determining a tax balance of any type. Tax compliance is a complex way of saying you are filing all required returns and paying taxes on time. The biggest challenge with most individuals and companies is that they are always resolving past tax liabilities while creating new liabilities. There are two major facets of tax compliance and these are filing returns on time and paying on time (especially before the due dates). if you adhere to these simple facets, compliance is then a straightforward process. This will ensure you avoid penalties and interests which are always a nightmare to sort out. The Authority has simpli-
fied all these processes with the vigorous technological transformation agenda meant to improve taxpayer focus or customer experience. The Authority has a new TaxOnline system that allows you to register, file returns and make payments online. The new system is very user-friendly and you do not need to be an expert to navigate and sort out your tax issues. The new TaxOnline system is complimented with TaxOnphone which uses the USSD technology by simply typing *858# from any mobile phone and you will be able to register, file, and make payments. This is further linked to most payment platforms raging from banks, mobile network operators such as Airtel, MTN, Zamtel, and 543 Konse Konse whose system allows taxpayers to pay using whats app. From the Tax Authority perspective, Tax Adminis-
tration has two facets, voluntary tax compliance, and enforcement. If you do not voluntarily comply by registering, filing correct and truthful returns, making payments for your tax liabilities, the Authority has various forms of corrective and collective action like tax assessments for undeclared tax liabilities. For collection purposes, the Authority can issue a demand notice, garnishments, warrants of dis-
tress, and sometimes prosecutions. The Authority has been very flexible and allowing every business to make good of their tax account by allowing them to enter into a time to pay agreements with a condition that agreed terms are honored. A lot of businesses have benefitted from this facility and improved their liquidity and performance because all tax payments were spaced and
paid in installments. This facility has many advantages to the taxpayer as it allows the taxpayer some financial planning scheme with the support of the tax Authority. The new approach by the Zambia Revenue Authority is to be a strategic business partner that offers all tax-related consultancy and solutions to the taxpayers to help them grow their businesses. Therefore, the authority has even moved a step further by opening new customer service centers in various malls such as ECL mall in Kitwe, East park, and cosmopolitan mall in Lusaka to offer free tax education, training on how to use the systems, registering businesses and helping taxpayers with compliance and free tax consultancy. All these initiatives are meant to improve taxpayer experience and improve tax compliance among the individuals and business community countrywide.
The authority has even moved a step further by opening new customer service centers in various malls such as ECL mall in Kitwe, East park, and cosmopolitan mall in Lusaka to offer free tax education, training on how to use the systems, registering businesses and helping taxpayers with compliance and free tax consultancy.
Remember the secret of any business success is tax compliance from the beginning and every day is a new beginning. Lastly, for those registered for Value Added Tax(VAT), please take note that the 16% vat charged on your clients is not your money but a Government resource, because you are just a collection agent for VAT hence we appeal that you should always be prudent with money collected on behalf of Government and remit it on time. The biggest mistake is that most businesses mix up the VAT collected on behalf of the government and end up spending it hence creating tax liabilities and tax burdens for their businesses. My Tax, Your Tax, our Destiny.

WIDENING DEFICIT …Kenya’s current account deficit to widen to 5.2pc CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge told a virtual press conference that imports excluding oil are expected to expand this year due to dynamism in various production sectors in the economy. According to the CBK governor, the country’s current account deficit is projected to stabilize at 5 percent going forward.
Union wants parley’s accounts committee to get SAA’s finances published JOHANNESBURG - One of SAA's largest unions says it will be writing to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) to "do more" to hold the Department of Public Enterprises accountable for embattled state-owned airline SAA's failure to produce financial statements. "This repeated failure is having a very negative impact on SAA Technical and Air Chefs which are subsidiaries of SAA. Workers at both these subsidiaries are suffering because of the non-payment of salaries," said the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa. SAA was placed into business rescue in December 2019. But the last set of audited financial results available its website are for the 2016/17 financial year, although some more recent unaudited results have been published. As fin24 previously reported, the financial statements of its subsidiaries - Mango, SAA Technical and Air Chefs usually form part of SAA's. Numsa said the absence of recent financial statements was blocking members at Air Chefs and SAAT from receiving benefits. It wants the important
oversight committee to intervene, saying up-to-date statements would demonstrate the extent of "mismanagement and rampant wastage" at the airline. A week ago Scopa held a hearing that considered the airline's finances. It heard from, among others, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, who said his department had spoken to the Auditor-General. "The Auditor-General said, given the business rescue status of SAA, they had not conducted any audits. So, we have to go back to the AuditorGeneral to find out what the process would be once SAA is out of business rescue to see how financials could be made available," said Gordhan. Meanwhile, the airline's rescue practitioners said they hoped to be able to exit the rescue process in a few weeks, while Scopa chair Mkhuleko Hlengwa said that audited financial statements would enable SAA to learn from past mistakes. Unlike SAA, its subsidiaries are not in business rescue. The DPE is hoping that Parliament will allow a special allocation of R2.7 billion for SAA’s subsidiaries from the R10.5 billion allocated to SAA in last year’s mini budget. – FIN24.

AIROBI - Kenya's current account deficit is expected to widen to 5.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 from the estimated 4.8 percent in 2020, the Central Bank of Kenya said Tuesday. CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge told a virtual press conference that imports excluding oil are expected to expand this year due to dynamism in various production sectors in the economy. According to the CBK governor, the country's current account deficit is projected to stabilize at 5 percent going forward. The government has also embarked on a path of strong fiscal condition in order to achieve as part of austerity measures. Zimra rakes in US$1.3m from cargo tracking HARARE - The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) says it raked in over US$1.3 million last year in cargo sealing fees and associated violation fines. Through its Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS), the tax agency seals and tracks cargo entering and leaving the country in a bid to enforce controls on the importation of restricted or controlled goods. The system is also designed to curb transit fraud and avoid goods being dumped in the country. “Electronic seals are affixed to cargo containers, box trucks, soft sided trucks (flat decks with side curtains), tankers, and break bulk
(goods under tarpaulin) the electronic seals send regular signals to the control room to show the location of the cargo,” Zimra said. “The electronic seal connects to the internet and the control room is manned 24 hours a day and relays information of violations to the reaction teams.” Once goods are sealed, truck drivers are asked to choose a specific route to use to get to their destination which allows the tax agency to track the movement. “Any diversion from these routes or entry into a restricted zone constitutes a geo fence violation, which attracts a US$2, 000 fine,” Zimra said. “Other violations include
unauthorised opening of the seal, tampering with the SIM cards, losing and/or damaging the seal.” In 2020, Zimbabwe sealed a total of 35, 076 vehicles, earning the agency US$1, 083 million while fines raked in US$216, 900. High risk cargo, which is targeted for sealing includes petroleum products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, basic commodities, electricals, clothing and footwear. Meanwhile, Zimra is targeting to acquire drones worth US$2 million as well as install advanced closed circuit television system to deal with rampant smuggling and underhand dealing at ports of entry. - NEW ZIANA.

Dear Editor, SO much has been said and written about how poorly the Zambian economy has been performing. The doomsayers have been in overdrive to perpetuate a false narrative that the Zambian economy is nearing a melting point. Listening to these paid analysts discuss the state of the economy does not paint an entirely true picture of the domestic economy. When President Edgar Lungu recently remarked that the economy is doing well, his statement was met with rebuke and dismissed by the same gang of pessimistic individuals whose main preoccupation is to paint the country black. What however is true is that as much as commodity prices have recorded marginal rises, the general state of the economy is very sound. This is evidenced by the number of Zambians who are excelling in many sectors of the economy. World over, one of the early signs of a declining economy is the collapse of the property market but to the contrary, the Zambian property market is outperforming many other sectors. The boom that has been recorded in the property market where Zambians are buying land and building modern residential and commercial properties goes to show that the economy is doing well. The other key indicator is the growth of the domestic tourism sector. With the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the inflow of international tourists, local Zambians have taken up the challenge and are now keeping our tourism operations afloat. Just this Easter holiday,
one will find it hard to secure a booking in Livingstone, Samfya and other tourism resorts as they are fully booked. If you check at Shimabala and Choma Toll Stations, you will be amazed at the flow of traffic out of Lusaka headed to Livingstone as Zambians go to relax with their friends and families. The question therefore is, if the economy is as bad as they wish us to believe, who then is spending at these tourism resorts? My conclusion is that as Zambians, we need to support President Lungu’s administration as the environment for business growth is already there for us to contribute to the economy. Those who wish to continue complaining on social media will remain so as the rest of the nation continues to work hard to improve their lives. Throughout humanity, people have always been complaining even when Manna was served, some people complained. Even when Jesus performed miracles, some people questioned him and asked him if he could save himself by jumping from a tall building to prove he was a child of God. The Bible also tells us about Doubting Thomasses because those will always be around and even today, some are still questioning President Lungu’s leadership even when it is abundantly clear that he has performed beyond expectations. What is true is that the government will not come and knock on your doors and supply all your needs but will create a supportive environment for you to prosper. BOWMAN CHILOSHA LUSAMBO.

Readers Forum: The Column You Write
Vision beyond 2021: Transportation Dear Editor, FOR a society to function efficiently movement of people, goods and services has to happen and public transportation presents a cheaper and more efficient option for our people in Kanchibiya. The district sits well over 900 kilometres from the nation's capital Lusaka. Transportation continues to be vital to human survival and for many years the Kanchibiya community has depended largely on motorcycles and bicycles to ferry their sick to clinics, young to schools and goods to the mar-
kets. The nearest town (boma) is Mpika which is approximately 65km from Munikashi, 100km from Chalabesa and 111km from Chambeshi all three of Kanchibiya. The people of Kanchibiya depend on Mpika for buying and sale of commodities and access to intensive medical care services. The need for public transport in the area cannot be overemphasised as there's none. Both the Patriotic Front manifesto 2016 - 2021 and 7NDP prioritises well-func-
tioning transport system and rehabilitation and maintenance of primary feeder road networks to provide transportation of farm produce to the markets. To this effect, the introduction of public transportation entails the advent of more economic activities within the constituency, to the constituency and from it. It means business opportunities for people who own vehicles that can be used for public transportation such as buses and taxis, employment opportunities for drivers and conductors as well as for rev-
enue collectors among other opportunities. Public transport will also give our mothers in business easier access to markets to either sell or buy goods, our children easier and quicker access to schools, it will help families get to clinics and health centres quickly and easily - these and other activities all at a cheaper price. Our mandate is and will still remain: to bring mass development for the people of Kanchibiya with the people of Kanchibiya. SUNDAY CHILUFYA CHANDA.
Church relief fund a legitimate empowerment initiative Dear Editor, THE advent of the Covid-19 virus had far reaching implications on the various economic activities. The adverse consequences are visible even among the economic tycoons and for the least privileged members of the society, they have not been spared at all. The ripple effects were visible to the variety of citizenry and the church harbours the largest constituent of the affected members of the society. After wide consultations among the various church mother bodies, and other stake holders, cabinet approved to establish a revolving fund that purposefully with the view to having the church as beneficiaries. President Edgar Lungu last year
made the pronouncements that the churches were earmarked as beneficiaries of the Covid stimulus package. We also recall how other leaders around the world as in South Africa, Kenya and Ghana for example came out to publicly make pronouncements authorising that billions of dollars be spent as a stimulus package. Back home, some Zambians questioned what the government was doing to redeem the economic prospects of the emerging agricultural powerhouse, Zambia. Government did not want to make an impulsive decision but initiatied wider consultations from the reservoir of experts in line ministries and other followers of public debates regarding the efficacy of establishing
the relief funds. On dribs and drabs basis the Government commenced stimulus packages on a sector by sector basis. It is also in public domain that the various well-wishers and business sector made donations to the government in cash and in kind with a number of beneficiaries in mind. Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba provided guidance that the public financial management guidelines will be adhered to and that the donations will be audited. The Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs has been the implementing authority for the stimulus package that has the churches as prime beneficiaries. We therefore find it strange for Archbishop George Lungu to incite
resistance of the empowerment initiative programmes that the government has established to empower and aid churches recover from the Covid pandemic. There has been no political overtone on the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Reverend Godfridah Sumaili. We understand that Bishop Lungu also suggests that the money meant to empower the cash-strapped churches should be channeled to other expenditure programmes. With all due respect, Bishop Lungu's suggestion if adhered to amounts to misappropriation of public funds which has been a generational problem. In simple terms, misappropriation of public funds is when the funds are used for the purposes oth-
er than what they are meant for. The church empowerment fund is meant to empower churches and it should be used as such. It is also in public domain the government is relentlessly committed to find long term solutions to the lapses in honouring salary obligations for the council workers. We also understand that the UPND have joined the rejection of this empowerment initiative. These are the same people that once accused the government of selectively empowering the PF supporters. Thus it is irresponsible and unpatriotic for them not to commend the government when it implements the programmes meant at empowering Zambians from different sectors. MARVIN CHANDA MBERI, Lusaka.

PF prods members to verify details By SANFROSSA MANYINDA
T
HE Patriotic Front (PF) has urged all members to take advantage of the extension of the voter registration verification exercise to verify their particulars and ensure that everything on their voter's cards is correct. Copperbelt PF acting chairman, Bernard Zulu, said this would ensure that unnecessary problems were avoided as the country goes to the polls on August 12, this year. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) started the process of physical verification of voters on March, 29 to April 2, 2021. But due to stakeholders’outcry, the ECZ extended the physical inspection of the provisional register of voters by five days from April 3
to April 7, this year. "The extension should be promoted as it has several advantages such as if the registered voter wants to change their polling stations, they were able to," Mr Zulu said. Meanwhile, Mr Zulu applauded the central committee of the party for having unanimously endorsed President Edgar Lungu as the preferred
candidate for the position of party President at the forth coming general conference. He said the party in the province had therefore reaffirmed its already made decision to support the candidature of the head of state on grounds that he had provided quality leadership. He said President Lungu deserved the endorse-

ECZ VERIFICATION NEEDS MORE PUBLICITY - AVAP By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

HE Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) in North-Western province has observed that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has not done enough sensitisation in the ongoing physical inspection of voters’ registers. AVAP provincial coordinator, Cranes Kashito, said in an inter-
RE
view that many people were not aware that the exercise was on hence the slow pace. "Even just the online verification one, very few people are aware about it, all because the commission has not done enough in terms of sensitisation," he said. Mr Kashito said though the ECZ extended the period, the number of days given were not enough to yield positive results. He proposed that the ECZ
should take advantage of radio stations in various districts and sensitise the public. "Apart from that, they should be using public announcement systems through the Zambia National Information Services to sensitise masses," he added. Mr Kashito said this year's elections would be crucial hence the need for the relevant authorities to put place measures that secure the interest of the people.

ROAD TRANSPORT AND SAFETY AGENCY
PUBLIC NOTICE SWINDLING OF UNSUSPECTING MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) would like to caution members of the general public against some unscrupulous people maliciously purporting to be RTSA staff and soliciting payment on the pretext of offering various Agency services. The Agency has received numerous reports that unknown persons have continuously swindled unsuspecting RTSA clientele and other members of public by masquerading as Agency employees and soliciting for money in the process. The unknown fraudsters have been contacting drivers and other members of the public using some known mobile phone numbers and claiming the following: • That the particular member of public (victim) has a traffic infringement and thus their motor vehicle or driving license would be blocked on the RTSA system if they didn’t send some money mostly via mobile money platforms; • That their driving license has anomalies on the RTSA system and thus they would be blocked if not resolved. In the process they (fraudsters) solicit for money from them as an inducement for resolving their issues; • That the Agency is running a data migration exercise for driving licenses and motor vehicle registration books and as such all RTSA clientele would have to migrate to the new system as soon as possible; and • That the Agency was employing and thus they (victims) should send a certain amount of money for medicals so that they may be considered for employment. The Agency is hereby dispelling these assertions and strongly condemns these acts. In view of the above, kindly take note that the Agency has reported the matter to the Zambia Police Service and Zambia Information and Telecommunications Authority (ZICTA) for investigations. Members of the public are therefore advised to seek RTSA services from Agency stations and authorized outsourced institutions. Impersonation and extortion is an offence contrary to Section 18(a) of the AntiCorruption Act no. 3 of 2012 and section 296 of the Penal code respectively. And those found wanting will be prosecuted according to the provisions of the law. Kindly report suspicious requests to the Zambia Police and RTSA on 0211228798. By ANDREW MUKOMA LEARNERS in Livingstone have been urged to learn to preserve nature through planting trees. Livingstone District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), Eiden Kambunga, observed that the world was grappling with climate change and therefore leaners must adapt the concept of planting trees and co-existing with wild animals. He said that there was need to revive school clubs such as chongololo in order impart positive mindset among learners towards nature. Mr Kambunga was speaking during a training workshop of learners drawn from three schools that are situated near the Mosi-oa-tunya National Park. The workshop was conducted by Wildlife and Environmental Society of Zambia.
Village Water donates to Shibuyunji health facility VILLAGE Water Zambia has donated assorted medical equipment and Covid-19 protective materials to Nampundwe rural health centre in Shibuyunji. Speaking during the handover of the equipment at Nampundwe Rural Health Centre, Mr Ngo’nomo said most rural districts do not have equipment hence the
He said that climate change has brought a lot of harm to humanity. He said that if schools were to reserve the trend of Chongololo clubs, a lot of efforts needed to be put in place in a number of activities and commitments. Mr Kambunga encouraged the young ones to belong to clubs like Chipembele and Chongololo to learn more on environmental management. "I therefore, want to encourage leaners to spend their time we'll by belonging to clubs that can inculcate values that appreciate a friendly environment," he said. Mr Kambunga said that a friendly environment could make a learner pass with good marks because it entails clean surrounding, clean water and clean toilets. need to support them. And Shibuyunji District Commissioner, Jairos Simukoko has thanked Village water for the gesture. Mr Simukoko said the district faces challenges with referral of maternal cases to bigger hospitals because health facilities in the area do not have equipment to handle maternal complications. Speaking at the same event, Shibuyunji District Health Director, Christopher Lengwe expressed gratitude to Village water Zambia for recognizing the challenges health facilities in the area are facing. Among the items donated include a baby resuscitator, delivery table, phototherapy machine, suction machines and 90 boxes of examination gloves, 20 boxes of sterile surgical gloves, face masks, four digital thermometers among others - ZANIS.

ITERALLY all our lives begun as a very competitive race which only ended when one out of the millions of sperms won by reaching the egg first , fused with it and then formed the permanent union that later became me and you. The pace of the race itself depended on how much energy there was in the mitochondria, the power house of these competing cells. And the energy itself was sourced from food eaten by our fathers(Happy fathers day). So literally our being here depended on how much food was there in the first place.
The association of food with man can never be over emphasized for food has been part of us since the beginning of time. As a matter of fact some religious books say that even our problems begun as a result of food. I am told that when Adam who is believed to be the first human “ate” the forbidden fruit given to him by his wife Eve, the first woman, then a pandora’s box of evil was opened and untold suffering including death was unleashed on mankind. To date, death is still the most painful mystery to us and Covid-19 is just adding to its endless list of victims , with now far over a million lives lost to the pandemic Globally. Even in the fight against Covid-19, food has been found to be a very important factor. I Cant agree more with one who said “we are what we eat”. Yes indeed food affects our weight which eventually affects our health and general wellbeing. Last week we talked about how being overweight and obese affect our chances against Covid-19 and other diseases like diabetes ,heart problems etc. Today I would like us to look at how food makes one overweight and obese. This information, I believe is not new to most of us but I think it should be re em-
LETS BURN IT:
WE ARE WHAT WE EAT phasized especially at a time such as this . A time when one’s weight literally makes a difference on whether one will end up on Oxygen or not, whether one will end up in ICU or not and if they do if they will come back home smiling or come out the other side lifeless in a cold metallic box. WHAT IS FOOD? Food is defined as any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. Food is usually of plant, animal or fungal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilat-
ed by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth. But for us to be health we must eat the right food that is meant for us. We cant eat what is meant for animals neither they can survive on our diets though at some point we do share certain foods. Sadly there are some reports of humans eating
fellow humans ,cannibalism. The right nutrition for people should contain carbohydrates like nshima, kandolo, mwanja, etc ,these are broken down into sugar and give us energy. The diet should also consist of proteins like meat ,fish ,kapenta ,beans etc which the body uses for growth and repair of damaged tissues. Of course there must also be some fat like oils for warmth and storage of energy for use in times of starvation. Then the vitamins which come in form of vegetables and some fruits help with a lot of the processes that take place in the body without which the body can’t function properly.
And finally do minerals and pother trace elements from different other foods. HOW FAT IS FORMED? In simple terms fat is formed when there is a disbalance between how much food one ingests and how much of it is being utilized. In short if one eats food more than the body needs then the excess food will be
turned into fat by the liver and then be stored in the body. For men this fat is usually stored around the belly while for ladies it is usually around the breasts, thighs and the buttocks. But both do store it around many internal organs in the body including the liver that makes it. There are some foods called “fast foods” that give very quick energy and are a major culprit to weight gain. Please remember it is not only carbohydrates that can cause one to become fat when taken in excess but also proteins and fats. The principle is moderation no matter what one is taking, take it in the right amount. On top of all this we should

also put into consideration the time we are eating; usually late hours are not the best as most of the food eaten at those awkward hours will be just converted into fat whilst one is sleeping. The big tummy affects breathing. Extra fat on your neck or chest or across your abdomen can make it difficult
to breathe deeply and may produce hormones that affect your body's breathing patterns. You may also have a problem with the way your brain controls your breathing. Most people who have obesity hypoventilation syndrome also have sleep apnea. I have seen a lot of patients that worsening oxygen demands and one thing among most of them especially men and men are the ones affected the most is that they had “big” tummies. The diagram the main muscle of breathing is not allowed enough room to expand when one has a lot of abdominal fat and this leads to breathing difficulties which becomes double trouble once such a one gets Covid 19. There have been a couple of ladies as well but one other challenge is for pregnant women, the womb also affects breathing. At some point we have had to do emergency c sections on pregnant women to try and save them. So beloved when you look at that plate in front of you, when the aroma of the beautiful food in it hits your nostrils and when your salivating mouth eventually gets the bite of it, please always remember that it is not just food. It can if not taken in moderation be the beginning of your end. Please let us all take full responsibility
of what we eat, when we eat and how much we eat. Remember the excess food will be turned into fat and if we don’t burn it ,we will hang it and on it SARSCOV2 the virus that causes Covid 19 will thrive and then there is no telling how things can go af-
terwards. This is one lesson I wouldn’t want to learn and only if you knew as I hope you do now, I am very sure it is one you wouldn’t want to learn as well. UNTIL THEN ALUTA CONTINUA, THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES PLEASE KINDLY: *MASK UP *OBSERVE HAND HYGIENE *SOCIALISE WISELY. AND BECAUSE YOU CARE,PLEASE KINDLY SHARE.

MOZ ARMY SAYS ‘SIGNIFICANT’ NUMBER OF MILITANTS KILLED IN PALMA BATTLE
M
APUTO - Mozambique's military said on Sunday a "significant" number of militants had been killed during a battle over a key northern town and gas hub captured by the Islamic State last month. Palma was seized by the jihadists during coordinated attacks on March 24, in what was seen as the biggest escalation of the insurgency ravaging the north of the nation since 2017. The true death toll is not yet known, but thousands were displaced from the town of some 75, 000 and the French energy giant Total suspended operations at its multi-billion-dollar plant. On Sunday, the army escorted officials and journalists through the ravaged town, claiming a "significant"
Netanyahu’s favours were ‘currency’
TEL AVIV - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made "illegitimate use" of his power and saw favours as "currency," a prosecutor has alleged at his corruption trial. Liat Ben Ari told a court in Jerusalem that he sought "improper benefits from owners of major media in Israel to advance his personal affairs." Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing.
The hearing comes as Israel's president meets parliamentarians to ask whom they support to form the next government following last month's election. It failed to end the long period of political stalemate that has led to four elections in two years, leaving both Netanyahu's right-wing bloc and the parties opposed to him remaining in power short of a
number of militants had been killed, and that they had now secured the surrounding area. Commander Chongo Vidigal, leading the military operation to regain control of the town, said the area was "safe" - but fell short of declaring the army had regained control. "The airfield area was the only one we needed to clear and we did that this morning (Sunday). It's completely safe," Vidigal said. "I think that it is a significant number of terrorists who were shot down," he said, adding they would clarify the exact number later. Last week, the government said dozens of civilians had died during the fighting, but Vidigal said they had not finished counting the bodies. – AFP.
majority. Once President Reuven Rivlin has consulted all the parties, he will nominate whoever he thinks has the best chance of forming a governing coalition. Israeli media cited him as telling members of the Yesh Atid party of opposition leader Yair Lapid: "At the moment, I can't see a way to form a coalition."
Netanyahu's rivals fear that if he remains prime minister he will push through legislation that would grant him immunity from prosecution while in office. He rejects such a claim. He has been indicted in three cases, known as 1, 000, 2, 000 and 4, 000: Netanyahu has denied all the charges against him, branding them a "witchhunt" by his political opponents, and has vowed to clear his name. – BBC.

NEWS IN BRIEFS US raises red flag over human rights violations in Zim
HARARE - The United States has raised the red flag over alleged human rights violations in Zimbabwe, which include torture of government critics by security forces. The report on human rights practices in 2020 by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy is yet another unflattering assessment of President Mnangagwa’s administration by the US in the last three years following a military coup that toppled long time ruler Robert Mugabe. – DAILY NATION, Kenya.
Tanzanian hospital to keep steam therapy machines
DAR ES SALAAM - Tanzania's national referral hospital, Muhimbili, has stated that the steam booths that were placed at its facility in Dar es Salaam will remain intact, an indication that the key hospital may continue to provide steam therapy as one of the ways to help fight Covid-19. Steam therapy, whose efficacy experts are divided on, was launched earlier this year as part of a national campaign by the Tanzanian government to fight coronavirus. – DAILY NATION, Kenya.
DRC hosts 'last chance' talks over contested Nile dam
KNSHASA - Foreign ministers from Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan held talks in Kinshasa on Sunday over Addis Ababa's contested giant dam on the Nile, seen as vital by Ethiopia and a threat by downstream Egypt and Sudan. "These negotiations represent the last chance that the three countries must seize to reach an accord," Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told Egyptian media. – AFP.
‘Militias behind most civilian killings in S.Sudan’
JUBA - Organised militia groups are behind eight in every 10 of South Sudan’s civilian deaths in the country’s enduring conflict, in what could signal the limitations of ceasefire agreements. A new report released by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan indicates that the militias were responsible for as many as 78 percent of civilian killings, injuries, sexual violence and abductions in South Sudan between January and December 2020. – AFP.

ZAMBIA’S High Commissioner to India, Judith Kapijimpanga, has commended Indian contractor Jaguar Overseas Limited on the completion of the 359 out of the 409 health posts in some parts of Zambia. Ms Kapijimpanga said President Edgar Lungu was committed to providing equitable access to cost effective and quality health services as close to the family as possible. ‘KEEP IT UP’ … Lungu hails prolific Patson Daka By MICHAEL MIYOBA
P
RESIDENT Edgar Lungu has congratulated prolific Chipolopolo striker Patson Daka who made history by scoring the quickest hat-trick in the history of Austrian Bundasliga after helping Red Bull Salzburg beat Sturm Graz. Daka scored an eight-minute hat-trick in the first half as RB Salzburg thrashed Sturm Graz 3-1 in Sunday’s Austrian Bundesliga encounter played at the Red Bull Arena. Lungu who took to social media to express his excitement
urged Daka to continue working hard to make the country proud. “Congratulations Patson Daka! You make us proud! Keep up the hard work,” read the post on Lungu’s official facebook page. After scoring two goals in each of Zambia's last two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, against Algeria and Zimbabwe, Daka continued his goal scoring run in Austria to complete seven goals in three matches for club and country. The 22-year-old gave the hosts a three-goal lead in the opening minutes at the Red Bull Arena with goals in the third, fifth and
11th minutes. Mali's Amadou Dante, however, reduced the deficit for Sturm Graz with his 13th-minute goal but it was not enough to inspire the visitors to a comeback. Daka had a chance to score four goals in the encounter but he failed to convert from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. The Zambia international who has failed to score in just two Bundesliga matches remains the leading scorer in the Austrian league with 23 goals after 19 games. His contributions helped Salzburg sit atop of the league table
with 29 points after 23 matches. The 22-year-old is a goal away from equaling his tally from the 2019-20 season, when he scored 24 goals in 31 matches. The 2017 Caf Youth Player of the Year is close to securing his fifth Bundesliga crown in Austria since he joined the Bulls from Zambian club Kafue Celtic. Although he is under contract until 2024, Daka's goalscoring form has reportedly made him a subject of transfer interest from several European clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
ZBF to use Teulings to identify young boxers SPORTS REPORTER ZAMBIA Boxing Federation (ZBF) national team coach Wisdom Mudenda has disclosed that the federation will use the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge to identify young boxers who can be nurtured to become senior pugilists. Mudenda, says he was impressed with the turnout of teams who brought their athletes at OYDC to take part in the Teulings/OYDC Youth Sports Challenge staged last Saturday. The competition attracted over 150 boxers from 10 Lusaka-based clubs. “This youthful competition will help ZBF identify young boxers who will be nurtured into
medal winners. I recall we had a similar competition here at OYDC some years back and it helped up identify the current African champions Everisto Mulenga, Patrick Chinyemba and Stephen Zimba who are also Tokyo 2020 Olympic-bound boxers” he said. Boxing is among other sports disciplines which were recently added to the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge which the OYDC host every weekend. There was huge excitement in the sports facility as boxers exchanged breathtaking punches. The young boxers sized each other in style and this saw teams like Evergreen and Exodus emerge with 12 points each at the end of the bouts.
Other games that took place include handball, rugby and judo. Some of the boxing teams which were present include Exodus, Evergreen, Olympafrica, Buffaloes, Nkwazi, ZNS, Esthers, Pettie, Youth Empowerment and Kunda. Meanwhile, ZBF general secretary Bright Chomba has praised OYDC management for adding back boxing to the Teulings Challenge saying it's a very good move for talent identification. "We are very happy the only problem is that most boxers who participate are from the Midlands Boxing Association as we want to see other stables from other provinces taking part," said Chomba.
LIVERPOOL’S last dance with Real Madrid ended in painful defeat, with Mohamed Salah's shoulder dislocated by Sergio Ramos dragging him to the ground and goalkeeper Loris Karius left apologising to his fans. Yet Karius's two errors, which handed Madrid a 13th European triumph in the 2018 Champions League final, were also the start of a journey for Liverpool. Karius was ruthlessly cast aside and Alisson Becker signed for a then world record fee for a goalkeeper. A year later Liverpool were the ones hoisting the Champions League trophy after beating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. Last season, an even heavier burden was lifted when they were crowned English champions for the first time in 30 years. But those highs have been followed by a fall from grace as Liverpool prepare to face Real again in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal in Madrid today. Fortress Anfield has turned into a visitors' dream with fans absent because of the coronavirus pandemic. After nearly four years without a home league defeat, Liverpool have lost six in a row for the first time in the club's history. Jurgen Klopp's men are in a scrap just to make it into next season's Champions League via a top-four finish in the Premier League. Injuries have taken their toll. Captain Jordan Henderson and centre-backs Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip will all miss both legs of the Real tie and are unlikely to play again this season. The signings of Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota last summer were designed to build from a position of strength, but both have also missed a large part of the campaign through injury. However, there could yet be a happy ending to a difficult season. Saturday's comprehensive 3-0 win at Arsenal was Liverpool's most complete performance of 2021. Jota is back fit and firing, scoring six times in his last four games for club and country. Thiago is also starting to find his rhythm, helped by the return of Fabinho to midfield after months of deputising as a makeshift centre-back. –SuperSport.
