POLICE AND POLLS
AS the country inches closer to the August 12 Presidential and parliamentary elections, it is likely that the political landscape will be more heated, with frayed nerves. And Zambians cannot be blamed if they decide to lock themselves in their homes and not venture out for fear of being caught in the crossfire. The onus to ensure that there is law and order thus falls on the Zambia Police Service who have the unenviable task of being the referee among the myriad political parties vying for power. And judging from statements being made by some of the political parties, the Zambia Police will have to up their game to be on top of things. But we are confident that the Zambia Police Service will be equal to the task and ensure that people do not lose their liberty to go about their businesses in the midst of the political campaigns. Former Inspector General of Police Martin Malama has given timely advice to the men and women in uniform which they can only ignore at their peril. He says the law enforcement agencies should be firm and professional in maintaining peace ahead of this year’s general elections. He says they should not hesitate to deal with those propagating violence regardless of who they were in society. Dr Malama, who is Kanchibiya Member of Parliament says there is need to ensure that confidence is instilled in the electoral system by ensuring that proponents of political violence were dealt with. He said the election period should not stop people from going about their normal businesses. But when some political players start claiming that the August 12 elections are already rigged by the ruling party conniving with the Electoral Commission of Zambia, then there is cause to be worried. The implication is that such parties appear to be inciting their members that should the August 12 elections not go their way, it won’t be because they have been rejected at the polls, but that they have been cheated. United Party for National Development spokesperson, Charles Kakoma this past week claimed that the August 12 general elections have already been rigged owing to the manner in which the National Registration Card issuance exercise and the Voter Registration process were unfairly conducted. Mr. Kakoma said it started with the issuance of NRCs which he claimed deliberately did not capture several first time voters in opposition strongholds. He alleged that the process concentrated in the PF strongholds, in Northern and Eastern provinces. It is such blanket statements without any evidence that the country should guard against to ensure peace prevails. If anything, Mr Kakoma should be taken on and provide evidence for such talk is a recipe for violence that Zambians abhor. As Dr Malama said, police must not hesitate to deal with those propagating violence regardless of which political party they belong to. And if they have a conscience, they should not cry about being victimised when they are the very people agitating for civil unrest.

IS ZAMBIA MIXING ELECTIONS WITH COPPER MINING?
By MUBANGA LUCHEMBE
THE Zambian government last month officially acquired a large stake in Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) from Glencore. Government, through its investment agency in mining firms, ZCCM-IH completed its 90 percent stake in the mine during a ceremony held in Lusaka. This brought the shareholding to 100 percent since the agency held 10 percent previously. The 90 percent shares were previously owned by Carlisa Investments Corporation representing Glencore with 73.1 percent and First Quantum Minerals with 16.9 percent. Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa said that the US$4.8 billion loan owned by MCM had been agreed and reduced to US$1.5bn. Adding that, the loan would be repaid through an off-take agreement granted to Glencore International using 10 percent of the production. According to Mr Musukwa, the transaction was significant as it guaranteed job security for the mineworkers, adding that the mine has a copper resource of about 280m tonnes and a 25-years lifespan. Meanwhile, ZCCM-IH chairperson Eric Silwamba said that the priority would now be to turn the mine around and ensure sustained production. The sale came after Glencore using its arm-twisting tactics last year tried to suspend operations at MCM due to low copper prices and Covid-19 disruptions, angering the government, which threatened to revoke the company’s mining licences. Some analysts said the government’s harsh tone showed desperation. “Desperation that comes from being a poor nation that cannot guarantee its mineworkers job security,” one analyst pointed out. The irony however is that Zambia is endowed with riches beyond imagination under its soil. So far, the country is internationally recognised as a major producer of copper and cobalt – ranked as the seventh and second highest world producer respectively. It also produces precious metals, gold and silver; including gemstones, amethyst, aquamarine, emeralds and tourmaline. Deposits of coal and industrial minerals are also known to occur in Zambia.
This year, ZCCM-IH will start oil explorations in Gwembe. But despite all this wealth, which has made foreign mining companies super-rich, most Zambians still live in the agony of poverty. No wonder, in the past few years, the Zambian mainstream and social media platforms have been awash with criticism of the way the mining sector has been handled. Known and unknown to many, an election year anywhere in the world is usually a year when the government is compassionate to the electorate. With various players wanting to grab power and rule, appeasing the ordinary people tends to be at the heart of the sitting government’s initiatives. Predictably so in Zambia, it appears, even though parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for August 12. The takeover of MCM by ZCCM-IH, the erstwhile owners before the 1990s privatisation programme is worsening matters for the UPND president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema on the Copperbelt as likely equity partners from Canada, China, EU, UK and US have already expressed interest in replacing Glencore. Just when he was so close to the prize – of becoming Zambia’s next president – Mr Hichilema’s ranks are being depleted by the desertion of his heavyweight political allies on the Copperbelt, who include mineworkers’ unionists, among others. What, in the name of politics, is happening to the man heavily tipped by pro-UPND media outlets to become Zambia’s seventh president? So, is it self-evident that Zambia is mixing elections with copper mining? Predictably though, the country’s exciting, highly fickle, and dynamic political scene has a new screenplay developing. ZCCM-IH’s move was unexpected until it was too late. It is this game-changing move by ZCCM-IH which has made cynical wags on the Copperbelt question Mr Hichilema’s chances of clinching the presidency without the support of influential kingpins of mineworkers’ unions and local mining suppliers/ contractors, who have abandoned him since Glencore’s exit. Fast rewind to the year 2006, the UPND began to bleed on the Copperbelt thanks to a self-inflicted wound which had been left untreated since Mr Hichilema’s handling of the RAMCOZ
receivership in Luanshya. And last year, the FDD leader, Ms Edith Nawakwi revived old accusations that Mr Hichilema’s conduct during the privatisation period bordered on theft of public resources and that he was lucky that he had never been arrested so far. Adding that Mr Hichilema should not stretch his luck too far as one day he would be made to account for the theft he allegedly committed. By coming out of the closet, Ms Nawakwi had confirmed the consistent narrative that most discerning Zambians have long held – that as a Managing Partner at Grant Thornton, Mr Hichilema used his position as an adviser to the Zambian government during the privatisation period to enrich himself. She also revealed that Grant Thornton was paid US$10m for the RAMCOZ receivership which did not even benefit the local mineworkers as most of them were left destitute. While to Mr Hichilema the RAMCOZ receivership was a business issue, Ms Nawakwi saw it as a political matter. And what is worse, her revelations were not only humiliating to the UPND, they had also done more harm than good for Mr Hichilema’s political ambitions, who is reinventing himself in readiness for this year’s presidential race. In the midst of all this, President Edgar Lungu’s ruling PF – in power since 2011 – is facing its stiffest electoral competition in August. The President himself is seeking a second term, but he surprised many with the harsh tone he used last year against Glencore for threatening to suspend operations and lay-off over 15, 000 mineworkers due to unforeseen uncertainties. And not only that: initially the affected mineworkers also threatened to shift their voting allegiance elsewhere too – albeit on pause following Glencore’s exit. That Glencore’s exit has exposed Mr Hichilema’s underbelly and sapped his chances is a matter of worry for the UPND. With Glencore’s departure from MCM, Zambia’s voting patterns on the vote-rich and populous Copperbelt are surely going to be reconfigured, and pundits are already wondering what might happen at this year’s general elections. Observers are asking: What kind of privatisation-jinx that has consistently disturbed Mr Hichilema’s chances when he has consecutively been five-times so close to the prize?

‘HH WANTS POWER TO SHIELD HIS CRIMES’ …He should zip his mouth on corruption because he is corrupt to the core - Nawakwi From page 1 But UPND spokesperson, Charles Kakoma said Ms Nawakwi’s accusations against Mr Hichilema were baseless. Mr Kakoma said Ms Nawakwi was a hired gun to maliciously attack the UPND leader. He challenged her to take Mr Hichilema to court if she has any evidence of the allegations raised. Ms Nawakwi said at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Hichilema wanted to become republican President to conceal his alleged fraudulent activities. “And Zambians must know that if someone is outside power and their behaviour is such as demonstrated by Hakainde, what more if you give him extra power? He wants power at all costs to cover up his wrong doings,” Ms Nawakwi said. Ms Nawakwi said the complainants might have been forced to make a statement that they will not appeal against a High Court ruling related to how the UPND leader repossessed their farm in Kalomo. This is a matter in which an administrator to the estate of Mr Samson Siatembo, Ms Feluna Hatembo, sued Mr Hichilema in the Lusaka High Court pointing
out the fraudulent manner in which Farm No 1924 of Kalomo was bought. However, the court ruled that the matter could not be heard in a civil case as the circumstances relating to the repossession of the farm occurred in 2005, 15 years ago. Ms Nawakwi said the two complainants might even have been bribed or threatened with death if did not withdraw the case against Mr Hichilema. “I want to state that Hakainde Hichilema should zip up his mouth on corruption. He should never utter the word corruption because he is corrupt to the core as evidenced in the silencing of a complainant, a poor woman with a very sick child. He is depriving poor people. This is really sad and unacceptable. When leaders use power to benefit themselves, it is called fraud and it is called corruption,” Ms Nawakwi said. Ms Nawakwi insisted that most of Mr Hichilema’s properties were fraudulently acquired. “It is a fact that the acquisition of his properties are fraudulent. Property on title cannot be bought in the manner that he presented it. He has an insatiable appetite to be rich at the expense of the poor people,” she said.
Mr Musukwa
Give priority to local contractors, suppliers, mining firms told BY SILUMESI MALUMO MINISTER of Mines and Mineral Development Richard Musukwa has directed all mining firms to prioritise local contractors and suppliers for their businesses to thrive. Mr Musukwa said “I want to appeal to all companies to support local content and enhance the contribution of Zambian entrepreneurs. He said that the engagement of local content in the mining companies would help to contribute significantly to the country’s economy. In fact, he said, various mining companies across the country are encouraged to ensure that they engage local people and local suppliers and contractors. He said there was need for the locals to be part of the equation in the mines so that they can contribute to the growth of the sector as well as to the economy. Mr Musukwa said Government would not condone any mining houses that would deliberately ignore the policy decision which had been made. “We want to see to it that mine contractors and suppliers are engaged by all mining firms. We don’t need to hear any complaint anymore because even President Edgar Lungu has categorically stated that our local people need to be given the chance to do business in the mining sector,” Mr Musukwa said.
Home News BY SILUMESI MALUMO GOVERNMENT has started dismantling the US$300 million debt Zesco owes Independent Power Producers (IPPS). Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa has said that the debt which Zesco owed the IPPS had been transferred to the government because the power utility company was highly indebted due to the losses it had continued to incur. He explained that the power utility company was buying power from IPPS at a high price but it was selling to its customers at a cheaper price resulting in huge losses. The minister said, the government would ensure that the debt was settled for the IPPS to continue supplying power. “The debt that is being owed is transferred to the government and the government of the Republic of Zambia will honour that debt. The debt is as a result of Zesco buying energy more and being sold for less. Therefore the government is negotiating with this difference to make sure that we get power at an affordable

price,” Mr Nkhuwa said. I can assure the nation that yes, the debt is being taken care of and Maamba is operating because they have been paid some money. If they were not being paid they would have probably shut the operations. Mr Nkhuwa said “They do get some money every month which they use for their operations and other things that they need to do, so the debt is being taken care off. Last year, Maamba Collieries Limited Chief Executive Officer Rear Shankar said Zesco was owing the institution over US$300 million to Maamba Coilleries for unpaid electricity. Mr Shankar said Zesco had not been able to pay the debt, making it difficult for the company to settle about US$100 million it owes in terms of loans.

KCM will re-engage 99pc of workers after re-organisation, says liquidator BY SILUMESI MALUMO WE shall re-engage about 99 percent of the workforce after restructuring Konkola Copper Mine, the provisional liquidator, Mr Milingo Lungu has said. Mr Milingo said during the restructuring of the mining giant, the contracts for all the miners had been terminated and some would be reengaged. He said that the mining giant would be split into two companies namely KCM Smelter Company Limited and Konkola Mineral Resources, therefore, the re-engagement in the two firms would be based on merit. He said in an interview yesterday, the wish of the management was to ensure that even when the re-engagement of miners would be done based on merit at least 99 percent of the workforce should be recalled. “What we are looking forward is that at least
98 or 99 percent of the workers whose contracts have been terminated during the restructuring of Konkola Copper Mine are re-engaged to continue the operations. But I need to emphasise that the two firms at Konkola Copper Mine will handle the reengagement based on the merit so that qualified people are able to do the work,” Mr Milingo said. Mr Milingo indicated that some people who were holding managerial positions without proper qualifications will not be re-engaged. “For instance someone is a manager but does not have any Grade 12 certificate how can you re-engage them, you just let them go so that people with proper qualifications can hold those positions,” Mr Milingo said. He also said that miners who had been on medical leave for a long time and those who had reached the retirement age would not be considered.
Elections rigged UPND … As opposition party warns of chaos BY KETRA KALUNGA THE 2021 general elections have already been rigged owing to the manner in which the National Registration Card issuance exercise and the Voter Registration process were unfairly conducted, United Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson, Charles Kakoma has claimed. And Mr Kakoma said the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) should change the alleged narrative and fairness in the August elections, saying that other countries had ended up in civil wars because of biasness in elections. He said in an interview that as far as the UPND was concerned, the rigging of the upcoming elections by the Patriotic Front started long before the voter registration exercise.
| 3
Mr. Kakoma said it started with the issuance of NRCs which he claimed deliberately did not capture several first time voters in opposition strongholds. He alleged that the process concentrated in the PF strongholds, in Northern and Eastern provinces. Mr. Kakoma said it was a well-orchestrated plan for PF to have an inbuilt majority in the voting system while opposition strongholds could not get voter registration cards without NRCs. “The rigging started a long time ago before we even went to voters’ registration, it started with the issuance of NRCs,” he said. Mr Kakoma also said the voter registration process was biased as ECZ could not capture many voters in opposition strongholds because of reported faulty equipment to deliberately deny the people a chance to have
the voter’s cards. He said there were many excuses of faulty equipment and slow internet by ECZ officials working from opposition strongholds. “It was a deliberate scheme to de-franchise a lot of our people,” said Mr Kakoma. Mr Kakoma also urged the ECZ to ensure a free, fair and credible election as that was what would ensure that the country had peace after the elections. He said when a political party including the opposition loses an election fairly, they don’t protest hence the need for the ECZ to ensure peaceful, credible, free, and fair elections. Mr. Kakoma said “many of the conflicts in Africa and the Third World arise from rigging elections so we must avoid that route and ECZ is the one that is going to help us to avoid conflict in our country.”
AU Summit tackles Covid-19 pandemic BY NOEL IYOMBWA FOREIGN Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji yesterday represented President Edgar Lungu at the 34th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union which was held via videoconferencing due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The two-day meeting is expected to among other things address various issues affecting the African continent as well as witness the change of leadership of the AU Assembly chairperson from South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa to President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who takes the mantle for this year. This is contained in a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs public relations officer, Chansa Kabwela. President Lungu said Zambia was undertaking internal consultations on the possibility of availing safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines to the Zambian people as a way of successfully controlling the pandemic. The Head of State however acknowledged Zambia’s receipt of the COVID-19 assistance package of the Jack Ma Foundation, which has greatly assisted in the prevention and control of the outbreak of the disease during the first wave. Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa noted that the AU is committed to developing African solutions to African problems. President Ramaphosa said the continent’s response to Covid-19 has been driven, coordinated and capacitated by African scientists and medical experts mainly located within the Africa Centres for Disease Control Prevention. And in- coming AU chairperson Felix Tshisekedi urged the AU member-states to continue putting efforts together in fighting the pandemic by consolidating the initiatives of the organisation. President Tshisekedi noted that the AU states must also put efforts together to address issues of peace and security, promote culture and African heritage as well as address issues of climate change.
Stop labeling Zambia a corrupt nation, Namulambe tells opposition OPPOSITION political leaders aspiring to be in power must not label those who are in government to be corrupt because they would be labeled as such when their turn comes, says former deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Gabriel Namulambe Mr Namulambe said in an interview that the corruption tag would be on the country regardless of who is in the office if the trend of calling those in government corrupt continued. He said it was the duty of every Zambian, including political leaders to clean the corruption tag against Zambia by creating a good image to the outside world about the nation. “Those who would want to be in government must not label those who are in government to be corrupt because in the same way that they label those to be corrupt, it would be the same way those who will go in if at all will go in will also be labeled,” he said. Mr Namulambe, a former official of the United Party for National Development, has advised Zambians to ensure that the word “corruption’’ is not tagged to the country. He said Zambians are the ones who should tell the outside world that there is no corruption in the country instead of being in the forefront painting a bad image about their own country to the outside world. He has urged Zambians with the interest of the country at heart to work towards removing the corruption tag on the nation.
Herbalists slam sub-standard medicines By SANFROSSA MANYINDA THE Traditional Health Practitioners Association of Zambia (THPAZ) says the availability of sub-standard medical supplies in the country should not be the reason for people to start flocking back to traditional healers. THPAZ president Rodwell Vongo said that choosing the method of seeking medical attention was every person’s human right but that there was also need to ensure that they visited genuine doctors. Dr Vongo said in an interview in Kitwe there could be some doctors who were offering sub-standard services in the same way some suppliers supplied the

general citizenry with substandard medical supplies. “We want traditional healers to supplement Government’s efforts in the most appropriate manner. “People are free to go where they feel their safety is guaranteed especially when it comes to health but all we can advise is for them to be careful because what may be done in a hurry may end up giving bad results,” he said. Dr Vongo called on Zambians to protect themselves and refuse to allow people to turn the country into a dumping ground for expired drugs among other medical supplies. He said that the calamity of having people supplying sub-standard drugs should not be tolerated by the citizens. He added that there was need to ensure that all medical supplies that were distributed to the people were of good quality.
Green Party convention set for May THE Green Party will hold its national convention alongside presidential nominations in May this year, its leader, Peter Sinkamba, has announced. Mr Sinkamba has also urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia to give guidance on whether the presidential nominations will be done virtually or physically, bearing in mind the numbers involved in carrying out the exercise amidst Covid-19 guidelines. He said the Green Party believe in democracy, the reason why a national conference would be held where members will be given an opportunity to elect national leaders. Mr. Sinkamba said rather than going for a national convention only to choose the national leadership now, the party would do this, side by side with the presidential nominations. “What we don’t know is whether the presidential nominations will be done physically or virtually, that’s why we need ECZ to guide in advance. But what we have decided as a party is to kill two birds with one stone,” he said. He said because of the surging cases of Covid-19, the party would await guidance on how the exercise would be conducted because 1, 000 supporters from 10 provinces was too huge a number to gather and support the candidature of a party president. Mr Sinkamba said his party was ready to hold the national convention during the time for nominations irrespective of the way and in which order it would be done. He said the Greens, through various social media platforms, were working day and night to woo voters in the forthcoming general elections. Mr Sinkamba said the Green Party and PF were the only organisation that have workable and reliable manifestos whose ideologies can transform the economic fortunes of the country.– ZANIS.

any evil to win elections because it was Zambians who want him to govern the country. He said in an interview yesterday that people still believed in President Lungu because of his leadership style of not leaving anyone behind. Mr Mwamba said opposition leaders were scared of the great support which President Lungu was receiving from all parts of the country. But Mr Mwamba said President Lungu was confident of winning elections because of the massive support he was receiving across the nation. "There is nothing dangerous about President Lungu winning elections. It is Zambians who have faith in him because they have not seen anything tangible

Ncwala ceremony cancelled PARAMOUNT Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia has declared that there will be no hosting of the Ncwala ceremony this year due to Covid-19. Mpezeni said he has made this decision after consultations with his chiefs and Government through the Ministry of Health. Speaking during a briefing held at Mtenguleni yesterday, Paramount Chief Mpezeni said Covid-19 has claimed a lot of lives in Zambia and as a result he has decided not to host the ceremony this year to safeguard the lives of the people. “This leadership I have is for the people and without you my people then the leadership will be meaningless. This disease has killed a lot of people, I have decided not to host the ceremony this year because I care about my people’s welfare and I don’t want to be blamed if ever there was any loss of lives as a result of Covid-19,” he said. Paramount Chief Mpezeni said the lives of his subjects matter, adding that not hosting the Ncwala ceremony this year does not mean the end of the Ngoni or their culture. “We are going to have the ceremony in the future when life is back to normal. I put God first in all that I do and the lives of my people matters a lot. God will give us direction and one day when everything is back to normal, we may have the ceremony,” he said. The traditional ruler commended
President Edgar Lungu and other stakeholders for rendering material, financial and technical support in the preparations of this year’s Ncwala ceremony. “As Ngoni Royal Establishment, we did all we could to prepare for the ceremony with guidance from the Ministry of Health. We have also taken note that going ahead with the ceremony would surely endanger the lives of many people including our own Ngonis. “To all my tribesmen (Bakiti), please bear
with us. It would not be right to rejoice for three days and mourn or put in danger our loved ones after. I have tried to see if the numbers of Covid-19 affected people would reduce but this is not the case, numbers have continued rising especially in Eastern Province,” Paramount Chief Mpezeni said. And Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu has commended the paramount chief for making a bold decision of not hosting the Ncwala ceremony this year. – ZANIS.

MAN KILLS BROTHER, PLUCKS OUT HEART, CUTS OFF FINGER
A
MURDER victim’s spirit testified to family members about its own heartless death and revealed that its body was killed by its brother who removed the heart and a finger and gave to an nyanga after the callous act. The shocking incident happened last week during a church service in Manamike Village, Gokwe Midlands Province. The spirit spoke through the murderous brother, William Ngara. William has not led a
peaceful life since 2002 after he allegedly killed his younger brother Andrew Ngara in Zambia and removed the heart and cut off his finger and gave it to an nyanga who had advised him to do so in order to be rich. To get rid of the troubling spirit, William sought help at a church led by Prophet Takawira. During a church service the spirit spoke through him (William) saying he killed his younger brother (Andrew) in Zambia. After coming out of the trance, William did not deny that he killed his brother. Church members were left shocked while some
trembled. The prophet told William to apologise to his parents. The village head of Manamike Village accompanied William to his father Thomas Ngara to confess and ask for forgiveness. A family spokesperson, Joseph Ngara told B-Metro that his brother William Ngara arrived home carrying a cock. “During the meeting that was attended my father and other family members William confessed to the family that he killed our sibling Andrew Ngara in Zambia after he consulted an nyanga to gain wealth and have a lot of cattle. The nyanga told him to bring a heart and finger of
a family member thereafter he will have a lot cattle,” he said. Joseph added: “He asked for forgiveness. He then asked my father to fine him while vowing that he would pay to appease him. But the father said he had to bring the bones of the late from Zambia after that they can talk about appeasement.” He said they reported the matter at Manoti police station. “Police asked him (William) to explain what happened but he stammered and fell in trance-like state saying forgive me and started to roll on the ground. - H-METRO
Hubby poisoned! A KADOMA man escaped death by a whisker after he was allegedly poisoned by his ‘young wife’.
UK police arrest Zimbo taking family to supermarket in ambulance with flashing lights GREATER Manchester Police have charged a 32-year-old Zimbabwean man after an ambulance pulled into an Asda (supermarket) with the emergency lights flashing.
Officers in Harpurhey said they saw the occupants of
the emergency vehicle – a family – go into the supermarket to do their shopping at around 10pm on Wednesday. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Blessing Mukaukirwa, 32, of no fixed abode, has been charged with single counts of driving while disqualified,
driving without a licence, driving without insurance, using a vehicle with unauthorised blue lights and failing to appear at court. “He has been remanded in custody and is to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today.”Traffic officers had earlier tweeted that the
vehicle arrived at the supermarket with its blue lights flashing, and that the occupants went inside to do their shopping. After being tracked down, the ambulance – believed to have been bought second hand – was then seized. NEHANDARADIO
Love rat Bhebhe pimps out lover to friends… persuades her to have orgies BHEKISISA Bhebhe has not only been bonking a number of women, but was at one time pimping out his longtime girlfriend to different men including his friends, after which he would ask her to give him intimate details of her sexual escapades with them. Your significant other is supposed to love and protect you from the dangers of the world but Bhebhe, a rare breed of a man, did the opposite to his young girlfriend as he would identify men for
her to seduce. WhatsApp chats that BMetro is in possession of, reveal Bhebhe to be a man who gets off from his girlfriend’s sexual exploits. Instead of discouraging her from being promiscuous, the Plumtree businessman even persuaded her to try having sexual orgies with him and his friends. At first, the girlfriend named Sikhue, refused to do so as she said that she only wanted to be with him, but after much cajoling, the love-struck woman agreed to
his requests. It is not known if the orgies happened as the chats did not reveal. The chats also indicate that Bhebhe and Sikhue’s sexual appetite was too high as they shared sordid details of the number of partners they had slept with and were targeting to sleep with. Bhebhe is legally married to Rebecca Bhebhe, a medical doctor based in Britain. The wife filed for divorce. He has been in the crosshairs of B-Metro for the past three weeks as new details of his love for the forbidden

Guta RaMwari Zvimiso (GRMZ), the church that he goes to suspended him after he was found guilty of having a sexual relationship with a senior church member and a large number of women. Bhebhe and Sikhue refused to comment when BMetro reached out to them. They did not respond to numerous calls and WhatsApp messages B-Metro could not reproduce the over 15 000 words chats but accompanying this story are a chosen few…
Francis Khondanani, who is Development Trust of Zimbabwe Board member for Mashonaland West Province, reportedly had tea that was laced with poison by Tanyaradzwa Denhere, 24, who packed her things and is on the run after the act. Police in Kadoma are currently investigating the suspected food poisoning case under RRB number 4547203 and have since requested that Mr Khondanani be medically examined. According to a letter addressed to ZRP Kadoma dated 24 January 2021 Kadoma General Hospital had approved that a tea sample that had been presented to them be taken to a private laboratory for analysis. “This serves to confirm that the above presented to us with a sample of tea. He suspects it might have been tempered with in an attempt to poison him,” reads the letter. “Unfortunately we do not have the laboratory capacity to analyse the tea. We have suggested that the sample be taken to a private laboratory for analysis.” Khondanani said he had
not yet recovered but had improved. “I have been to Harare for medical checks and I am getting better though I have not fully recovered yet,” he said. “The doctors are currently examining a sample of the tea I drank that day so we are waiting for results but meanwhile I have opened a case at Kadoma Central Police station.” He said his wife had made the tea for him and he did not consume anything on the day. “I don’t know what came over Mai Noku. We have been together for four years and God blessed us with a daughter Nokutenda. “We were always happy, and recently we toured the country’s resorts from Nyanga, Kariba and even Bulawayo because that’s what she loved. I took her places and she really looked happy to me,” said Khondanani. “On Saturday 23 January, she said she was not feeling well in the morning. She literally fell into my arms and looked pale and was shivering and she asked me to hold her because she felt sick. She really looked scared and when I asked her she said ‘hana yangu iri kurova’. She insisted she was okay but I had to make sure she sat down until she felt better. - HMETRO

YVONNE MWALE, SLAPDEE IN NEW SONG By TERENCE MISELO
C
ALL it a rare combination, but music sounds twice better when two artistes of different genres merge.
This is what one gets from the latest collaboration between hip hop star Slapdee and one authentic and prolific songstress Yvonne Mwale. The two are dropping a single called, “Uka Ukalilele?” expected to raise the bar for Zambian HipHop even higher. With their new song ‘Uka Ukalilele?’ which is already attracting massive attention, Yvonne Mwale and Slapdee are addressing a sensitive issue, that has a deep impact
on our society. ‘Uka Ukalilele?’ which means ‘Wake up, Are you still sleeping?’ is indeed a wake-up call, that can’t be ignored. “ While at most places in the world women are getting up to take their lives in their own hands and get empowered to become more independent, especially in Zambia, we still have a problem with young ladies that never managed to get a job or learnt how to take care of themselves. Instead, we see them hanging out at night in clubs and bars, hunting aged men that should secure them their survival,” reads a statement to explain the song. Yvonne says with this song, she wants to make a statement and encourage young ladies to become responsible for themselves
and do something productive for their future. “ And I’m grateful, that Slapdee is sharing this view with me and agreed to join on this track”. Yvonne Mwale recently made waves with her collaboration with Mic Burner, called ’Ne Nganga’. The track hit the Zambian radio charts and became successful. She is hopeful this new collaboration will also achieve as much as ‘ Ne Nganga.’ “Uka Ukalilele?” is available on mvesesani.com now and on Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, Boomplay and about 150 other music platforms around the world by Friday, 12th of February. The track can be pre-saved before on this link: https://save-it. cc/o-tonemusic/uka-ukalilele

To celebrate this, ZRA recognised key players in the sector including Muchinga Province’s Chete FM Radio located in Nakonde. In line with the ICD which is mainly commentated to recognise the efforts of custom officials, public and private sector and/or agencies that play a pivotal role in facilitating trade and travel, in simplyifying, standardizing and harmonizing border procedures and in securing borders, Chete FM Radio was among those recognised. “To us as a radio station, this recognition from ZRA means we are doing something right. Tom Holland says 'Spider-Man 3' is the most ambitious standalone superhero movie TOM Holland has described the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie as the "most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever". The 24-year-old actor will reprise his role as the webslinging hero in the film and feels that the project is "really impressive". Tom said: "I can say that it's the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made. You sit down, read the script, and see what they're trying to do, and they're succeeding. It's really impressive. "I've never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I'm just, you know, again, that lucky little s*** who happens to be Spider-Man in it."
Holland explained that there is still more filming to be completed but he is very "excited" to see the finished film. He told Variety: "We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we're starting again. I'm just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it." The “Avengers: Endgame” star revealed that he is keen to direct a movie and is keen to bring a script he has been working on with his brother Harry to the big screen. Asked if he was tempted to get behind the camera, Tom said: “Yes, absolutely. I’ve been try-
ing to scratch that itch for a really long time. And my younger brother Harry and I have been writing a script together. We managed to acquire the rights to a book series that we loved as kids. So we’ve been sort of chipping away at that. “I now have so much more respect for writers because it’s so difficult, man, I mean, trying to put something on the page is re-
ally, really quite difficult.” He continued: “I’d love to direct one day. We’re not rushing anything because I think the project we’re working on is amazing and can be quite powerful. So we want to make sure we get it right. “But hopefully, within the next five years, you’ll see Harry and I sitting in the director’s chairs shouting action.” - MARVEL

SUNDAY NATION February 7, 2021
T
HIS past Tuesday was World Wetlands Day, which is commemorated annually on February 2nd. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Wetlands and water”.
Wetlands are loosely defined as distinct ecosystems that are flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally, and include places like swamps and floodplains. Zambia has several wetlands which account for approximately 19% of the country’s total area. Eight (8) of these, including the Kafue Flats, Bangweulu Swamps and the Barotse Floodplains have been designated as wetlands of international importance under the RAMSAR convention on wetlands. In view of this, we had a chat with Mr. Mwape Sichilongo, Southern African Floodplains Regional Manager at the International Crane Foundation/Endangered Wildlife Trust in Zambia, who explained the key role wetlands play in our day-to-day life and how some of our actions are harming them.
Why are wetlands so important? Mr. Sichilongo says the importance of wetlands can be summed up in three key points. The first being that wetlands are of crucial ecological importance. He says, “They perform a variety of important ecosystem functions like providing specialized habitats where many plant and animal species that are adapted to their conditions can thrive.” He points out that some of these plants and animals are endemic (unique) to their ecosystems and cannot be found anywhere else. This is the case for the Kafue Lechwe, which only exists on the Kafue Flats and nowhere else in the world. “Wetlands are also home to large congregations of resident and migratory water birds. The Kafue Flats, for instance, are home to about 30% of the global population of Wattled Cranes”, adds Mr. Sichilongo. Another component of their ecological significance is that wetlands also support human life. “They provide building materials, like reeds and grass, used by local communities to build houses. Wetlands also provide local communities with essential nutrients from fish, plants and other animals”, he explains. Wetlands also help to regulate floods by absorbing
COMMEMORATING WETLANDS DAY WITH MWAPE SICHILONGO excess rainfall and are an important freshwater reservoir which supply water to larger towns and cities, like Lusaka. The second point is that wetlands are economically important. “They support agriculture and provide critical grazing land for livestock”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds, “Wetlands that have wildlife, such as the Kafue Flats, Barotse Floodplains and Bangweulu Wetlands, are also important for tourism. He reveals that in terms of fishing, wetlands like the Kafue Flats are of national importance. The Kafue Flats provides up to 20% of the national fishery requirement”, he explains. This creates employment and sustainable livelihoods for local communities and traders in big cities like Lusaka. Lastly, wetlands are culturally important. “In as much as wetlands are ecologically and economically important, they are also culturally very important”, reveals Mr. Sichilongo. “There are people and communities that live there, they perform ceremonies there, their livelihoods depend on the wetland and most importantly, their identity is associated with the character of the wetland”. An example here is the Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi people, which celebrates the movement of the Litunga from his palace at Lealui in the Barotse Floodplain to Limulunga palace on higher ground. And since the Kafue Flats hold around 30% of the global population of wattled cranes,
Zambians can be proud of holding this global heritage. What are we doing that’s harming wetlands? Wetlands are sensitive systems that depend on delicate balance, which can be upset by certain human activities. According to Mr. Sichilongo, the major threat to wetlands
across the country is that they are being exploited unsustainably. “Overharvesting of resources within wetlands is a serious issue”, he explains. “This includes overfishing and high levels of poaching for the illegal bushmeat trade, which compromises the availability of resources to the plants, animals and local
communities that depend on wetlands.” He adds, “At the moment, there’s too much poaching of the Kafue Lechwe for the illegal bushmeat market in Lusaka. As a result, the population of this unique animal is decreasing dramatically that in the last 50 years the population has shrunk by over 80%. He adds that the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW, formally ZAWA) is now warning that we deplete the Kafue Flats of all its Lechwe if we don’t change and regulate the way the Lechwes are being harvested, as provided by the Zambia Wildlife Act. Poaching is rampant across most of Zambia’s wetlands and in many cases, it threatens some endemic species, to the brink of extinction. What’s worse is that some methods of poaching like wire snaring and poisoning harm even unintended species. “Some wetlands are being drained for agriculture and people are putting up structures that are not conducive for wetlands, which means their ecological function is disturbed as they cannot keep water as they are designed to do”, says Mr. Sichilongo. He adds that another threat to wetlands is high levels of pollution from agriculture, mining and other industries, which compromises the quality of water in the wetlands. There is also evidence of overfishing in the Kafue Flats due to increased demand for fish, which is threatening fish population. Declining wet-
land quality and quantity has immediate and long-term effects on biodiversity and human livelihoods How can we use wetlands wisely? In 1991, Zambia became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. To realize the much-desired wise use of wetlands and their resources, Mr. Sichilongo advises that, “it is important to work with all stakeholders in different sectors to define what wise-use means and to agree on rules and behaviors that will constitute wise-use, so that we reduce the current levels of extraction and exploitation which are threatening the Kafue Flats and other wetlands across the country.” To this end, the International Crane Foundation has entered in a 20-year co-management agreement with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the restoration of the Kafue Flats. The priorities are enhancing capacity for law enforcement, park management and restoration, and effective community engagement. The conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources has immediate and long-term benefits to humankind.

MOM MEETS HER PREMATURE BABY BOY ...AFTER BEING UNCONSCIOUS, ON VENTILATOR DUE TO COVID-19
C
APE Town - Nosipho Nkantini had an emotional meeting with her baby boy, who was delivered by emergency C-section at only 25 weeks while she was unconscious and on ventilator support for Covid-19. Nkantini, from Eerste River, was overjoyed to meet her baby boy for the first time. The reunion came after the hospital had to search for the mother, who spent Christmas heartbroken and mistakenly assuming her baby had been born too early to survive. Their emotional meeting took place on January 4 in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Netcare N1 City Hospital in Goodwood, some three weeks after he came into the world on December 17. “When they showed me my baby, I was crying because I was so happy. I just couldn’t believe it. He is alive,” said Nkantini, a professional nurse in the public sector. “It was like a miracle, and I have decided to name him Oyena, which means ‘the one chosen by God’.” In early December, when she was only about halfway through her pregnancy, Nosipho developed symptoms of Covid-19. She contacted her general practitioner, who initially did not suspect she had the virus and instead prescribed antibiotics. “I went for a pregnancy check-up, and I suddenly felt very short of breath. I had a rapid Covid-19 test, and it came back negative. Still, I couldn’t breathe and it was terrifying. “I couldn’t have X-rays or certain treatments for my symptoms because I was pregnant. My second Covid-19 test came back positive.” She was transferred to Netcare N1 City Hospital and soon after arrival lost consciousness and was placed on a ventilator in the hospital’s “red” zone, dedicated to the care of Covid-19 positive patients. “From then I can’t remember anything until I woke up days later, when I was told that I had suffered complications and my baby had been delivered by emergency C-section,” Nkantini said. “They told me my baby was in the NICU, but I was so overwhelmed. Apart from the fact that I was still very weak recovering from Covid, I previously lost a baby who was delivered at 28 weeks, so I was extremely traumatised imagining this happening “At home, I was too scared to again.” When Nkantini was well enough to be phone the hospital because I had discharged, her baby still required highly specialised life support and care in the convinced myself my baby had NICU. died, and I couldn’t bear to have my Unfortunately, during her emergency admission, the contact details for Nkantiworst fears confirmed. Meanwhile, Nkantini was in despair. “Initially, he had a bit of a stormy course, as “At home, I was too scared to phone the hospital because I had convinced myself my he was born at only 25 weeks’ gestation, and baby had died, and I couldn’t bear to have my also because his mother had been so ill with worst fears confirmed. It was such a and is taking full feeds and continues to gain big relief, and afterwards the police said, ‘we weight.”

Dr Dippenaar explained that many mothers whose babies need to be cared for in a NICU environment experience “double separation”. “Double separation is when the mother cannot hold her baby and can no longer feel the baby inside her. Psychologically this is very tough, and in this case, it was further compounded by the mother’s history and traumatic Covid-19 experience.” After Nkantini completed her isolation period for Covid-19 she was finally able to see her baby for the first time on January 4. “I was so happy but at the same time it was very difficult not being able to hold him at first. The staff in the NICU were saying he’s a miracle baby, and we hope that he will soon grow strong enough to take him home.” I am so grateful to all the doctors and the hospital staff who cared for my baby and I, and for bringing us together. As a healthcare worker myself, I am especially thankful to all who are on the front-line of caring for people with Covid-19, and I owe my life to them.” She extended special thanks to gynaecologist Dr Bedwill Jentel, physician Dr Chris Greyling, neonatologist, Dr Dippenaar, paediatric intensivist Dr Shetil Nana and the neonatology team at the hospital. Nkantini and the social worker both expressed appreciation to the Kleinvlei Police Station for their prompt assistance and their vital role in uniting mother and child. Nkantini also appealed to the public to take Covid-19 seriously and do everything possible to prevent its spread. “I am a professional nurse, and as I was at high risk for severe Covid-19 because I am diabetic, my employer moved me to an office role, where I was part of the tracking and tracing team assisting Covid-19 patients and their contacts to help fight the spread of the coronavirus,” said Nkantini. - CAPE ARGUS

ACCESS TO CONCESSIONAL LOANS KEY TO AFRICA’S RECOVERY - RAMAPHOSA JOHANNESBURG - Access to loans on favourable terms will be crucial to Africa’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said yesterday. Ramaphosa, who is the outgoing chair of the African Union (AU), told the bloc’s summit that even though the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have deployed significant financial resources for the coronavirus outbreak response, more needed to be done. “Assess to concessional finance will remain crucial as countries rebuild their economies,” Ramaphosa told the virtual summit. “An injection of fresh resources by the IMF through reallocating and issuing new special drawing rights, with bias to the developing world, will correct the glaring inequality
President Ramaphosa in fiscal stimulus measures between advanced economies and the rest of the world.” Concessional loans generally offer terms that are more favourable to those available on
the open market. The precarious debt burdens of a number of African nations have worsened due to the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among a population of 1.3 billion, Africa has so far reported more than 3.6 million coronavirus infections and over 94, 000 deaths, according to a Reuters tally. South Africa has recorded the most infections of any African nation. While wealthier nations push ahead with mass vaccination drives, only a few African countries have started vaccinations. The 55-member African Union hopes to see 60 percent of the continent’s population immunised in the next three years. Ramaphosa said on Monday the AU has so far secured one billion vaccines, of which 700 million will come from the global COVAX facility, co-led by the World Health Organisation, and 300 million had been facilitated by the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT). – REUTERS.
New Libya interim government agreed in U.N. talks GENEVA/TRIPOLI - U.N. sponsored talks produced a new interim government for Libya on Friday aimed at resolving a decade of chaos, division and violence by holding national elections later this year. Mohammed al-Menfi, a former diplomat from Benghazi, will head a three-man presidency council, while Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, from the western city of Misrata, will head the government as prime minister. Libya has been engulfed in chaos since a NATObacked intervention ended Muammar Gaddafi’s four-decade rule in 2011 and has been split since 2014 between warring administrations backed by foreign powers in the west and east. However, with many factions in the country afraid to surrender influence they already hold, and with foreign powers invested in local allies, the new government may rapidly come under pressure. “My appeal to everybody is to recognize and accept these results and to work with the new authorities that were elected,” U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres said. The appointment of a new government may also do little to change the balance of military power on the ground, where armed groups rule the streets and factions remain split between east and west along a fortified front line. “This is the last chance for the Libyan people and political leaders to end the conflict and division in the country. We hope to reach the stage of elections, just as they have promised, to achieve the people’s demands,” said Gamal al-Fallah, a political activist in Benghazi. Analysts describe the new government team as surprise winners of a leadership contest against three other groups of candidates presented to the 75 Libyan participants picked by the United Nations to take part in political talks. A slate that included the eastern-based parliament head Aguila Saleh and western-based interior minister Fathi Bashagha was widely seen as the most likely to succeed but lost in a run-off by 39 votes to 34. – REUTERS.

WHO chief says drug firms should share vaccine-making capacity GENEVA - World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on more pharmaceutical companies on Friday to share manufacturing facilities to help ramp up the production of Covid-19 vaccines. The WHO also said its technical advisers would meet this week to assess versions of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII), the largest vaccine maker, and from South Korea’s SK Bioscience ahead of a possible WHO emergency listing. Speaking at an online news briefing from Geneva, Tedros said almost 130 countries with a combined population of 2.5 billion people were yet to administer any vaccines, and repeated his plea for rich nations to share doses with poorer countries once they have vaccinated health workers and older people. “But we also need a massive scale-up in production,” the WHO director general said. “Last week, Sanofi announced it would make its manufacturing infrastructure available to support production of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine. We call
on other companies to follow this example.” France’s Sanofi said last week it would will fill Pfizer’s vaccine from July, aiming to help supply more than 100 million doses this year amid massive demand. Other companies are already getting on board, as well. Switzerland’s Novartis struck a similar deal for the Pfizer shot, while Germany’s Bayer signed on to help CureVac. The WHO has so far approved a single Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, the shot from Pfizer and its German partner, Biontech. That could be expanded soon, with the independent WHO advisory group meeting on February 15 to look at versions of AstraZeneca and its partner Oxford University’s shot being made by the SII and SK Biosciences. “This data only came to us a few weeks ago,” Mariangela Simao, WHO assistant director general for vaccine access, said of the upcoming assessment, adding the group must analyse not only AstraZeneca’s “core data,” but also data from sites where the vaccine is being made, of which there are eight, before issuing its recommendation. – REUTERS.
DR Congo state mine reshuffle bolsters president
KINSHASA - The state mining company in the Democratic Republic of Congo has replaced its secretary general and other senior officials. The reshuffle at Gecamines marks the latest move to bolster President Félix Tshisekedi’s influence over that of his predecessor Joseph Kabila. It controls minority stakes in most of the country’s copper and cobalt mines. – BBC.
Biden ends deadlock over first African and first woman to lead WTO Julius Malema and Jacob Zuma met for tea at Nkandla on Friday
No party colours at Zuma, Malema tea party - and no comment either JOHANNESBURG - There was neither a red overall nor an ANC colour in sight when the EFF delegation - led by Julius Malema - posed with former President Jacob Zuma for pictures during their meeting at Nkandla on Friday. There was also no evidence that anyone was wearing a mask in the pictures, where those who were at the meeting stood shoulder-to-shoulder. Only one woman was present Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile. She posed in between Zuma and Malema, holding hands with both. EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo was non-committal about the meeting’s outcome, saying “the tea was nice and hot.” Pambo did not want to comment on the constitutional issues that would have been discussed. Zuma had said he would defy a Constitutional Court judgment, which ordered him to appear before the
Zondo Commission. “Black people do not need permission to meet, we meet anytime, anywhere we want to, so we came here to meet the former president to have tea, as we were invited,” Pambo said following the meeting Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina, who is in the ANC lobby which is sympathetic to Zuma, tweeted the impossible was achieved by uniting “Black Leadership.” Malema arrived at Nkandla by helicopter around noon, accompanied by Pambo, and former party chairperson Dali Mpofu. ANC national executive committee member, Tony Yengeni, was also at the meeting, the SABC’s Samkele Maseko reported. Malema previously slammed Zuma for using state money for upgrades to Nkandla, and disrupted Zuma’s appearances in Parliament by insisting that he pay back the money. – NEWS24.
WASHINGTON - The Biden administration has ended the deadlock over the next head of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) by expressing its “strong support” for Nigeria’s ex-finance minister. If confirmed in the role, Dr Okonjo-Iweala would be the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. She was frontrunner for the role until the Trump administration last October said it wanted another woman, South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, who has now withdrawn her candidacy. – BBC.

Tractors, trucks block India’s roads as farm protests widen
KUNDLI, India - Thousands of farmers across India blocked roads yesterrday with makeshift tents, tractors, trucks and boulders to pressure the government to roll back agricultural reforms that have triggered months-long protests. The federal government has offered concessions to the farmers but refuses to repeal three laws passed last year that it says are crucial to bring new investment to the sector, which accounts for nearly 15 percent of India’s $2.9 trillion economy and about half its workforce. – REUTERS.
